Hey There! I saw this, and I couldn't agree more! Nothing says I love you more than "I'm willing to try this for you." And this works for all kinds of relationships: romance, friends, and family, too.
Would you be able to create something showing this for one of your characters or pairings? It could be a drabble, fic, edit, art - anything at all!
NO PRESSURE AT ALL - only if you want to, but I'd love to see what you could come up with!
Hey there! Thank you for the idea! When I first saw this I knew that I had to write something for Adelaide and Tobias and this is what came to mind.
Blindfold
Series: Open Heart (Post Series)
Paring: Tobias Carrick x F!OC (Adelaide Barnes)
Rating: Explicit - 18+
Word Count: 1286 words
Summary: After an "innocent" game of Never Have I Ever, Tobias and Adelaide try something new.
Based on this prompt: "I'm willing to try this for you"
Tumblr media
It was supposed to be a fun game of Never Have I Ever, they said. There’s not going to be anything involving sexual topics, they said. But when alcohol was added into the mix, both Adelaide and Tobias knew that neither of these things were going to come true.
“Never have I ever… Blindfolded my partner during sex?” Bryce asked.
Most of the group had put a finger down. Neither Tobias nor Adelaide had put one down but Bryce, Ethan, Jackie, and Aurora had all put their fingers down.
“WHEN DID YOU BLINDFOLD SOMEONE?” Tobias said, directed towards Ethan.
“None of your business for one. Second, I’m surprised you haven’t Carrick”
“Yeah, I second that.” Jackie said.
“You better watch your next words very carefully there Varna.”
Tobias glared and Jackie held her hands up in defense. The game continued on for another 30 minutes before everyone decided that they should head back to their respective places. Luckily it was warm in Boston and Bryce’s place wasn’t too far from where Tobias and Adelaide's lived so they were able to walk home.
On their way back they decided to stop by their favorite diner to get some food in their bodies to help with the amount of alcohol running through their bodies. The two of them were able to grab a booth by a window and quickly order their food. Neither of them really talked much until the food had arrived and both started digging in.
“So…” Adelaide started.
“So?”
“You’ve never actually blindfolded someone before during sex?”
“No I haven’t. Have you?”
“No. I was just wondering because it seems like something you would want to do.”
Adelaide took another bite of her burger while Tobias just stayed silent. She stared at him as she chewed and watched the bite of food Tobias took go down hard and watched him grab his water.
“What are you looking at me like that for?”
“Have you ever thought of blindfolding me?”
Tobias choked on his water. He was able to swallow it down before coughing. He gave Adelaide a crazy look while she just rolled her eyes at him.
“Men. Would it kill you to voice what you want?”
“Something like this might.”
Adelaide sighed. “You know you could have just talked to me about this. Even if you want to do something and I didn’t, I would at least want you to ask first because then at least you know.”
“I know. I know. But this isn’t something that I thought you would be into.” Tobias said before taking another drink of water.
“Well you never know if you don’t ask. Plus now that I know you’ve thought about it, it’s now something I kinda want to try.”
Tobias set his cup down. “Really?”
“Yeah, who knows. It might actually be fun.”
“You actually want to do this?” Tobias asked as Adelaide nodded. “Ok. Well we’ll have to do it sometime soon.”
The pair just smiled at each other as they finished their food. They quickly paid and made their way home and went to bed.
—--
A couple weeks have gone by to where Adelaide and Tobias are on vacation for their 6 month anniversary in the Maldives. While the two of them planned the trip together, Adelaide had a couple of surprises up her sleeve.
After lunch on their second day, they had nothing planned for the next few hours until dinner, so they headed back up to their room. Once they were back, Tobias closed the door and turned just as Adelaide pushed him against the door and kissed him hard. He then loosened up and started running his hands through her hair as she started to pull away.
“I’ve got a little surprise for you.”
Tobias smirked as Adelaide gave him a quick peck on the lips before running over to her suitcase and grabbing something out that Tobias couldn’t see and ran to the bathroom. Tobias stood at the door in confusion before going over to the bed and sitting down. A few minutes later, Adelaide opened the door to reveal herself wearing a light blue lingerie set.
Tobias stared at her with his mouth agape as she slowly walked over to him with her hands behind her back. Adelaide then climbed on to his lap and gave him a hard kiss. She pulled away and held out a small box to Tobias.
“What is this?” Tobias asked.
“Open it.”
Adelaide got off of his lap as he started to open the box. Inside was a matching blindfold to her lingerie. Tobias whipped his head towards Adelaide who just smiled at him. He then threw the box onto the ground and quickly got on top of Adelaide, which made her giggle. Tobias then kissed her all over her face and her neck while she started to take off his clothes. Once he was wearing nothing, Adelaide went to grab the blindfold from Tobias, but he stopped her.
“Wait, are you sure you want to do this?”
“Babe, I’m willing to try this for you. Plus I think we could make this fun.”
Tobias nodded and then helped Adelaide put on the blindfold before she laid her back down on the bed. He then slowly began to take off her panties and dropped them onto the floor next to the bed. He then began to kiss up her left leg, making Adelaide’s breath shorten as he got closer to her core.
As Tobias gets as close to her clit without touching, he then smirks and moves down to the bottom of her right leg, making her whimper as he slowly makes his way up her leg. Once he gets closer to her clit again, Tobias inserts two fingers into her while circling and sucking on it. He takes his other hand and starts to massage her breasts before moving his hand to her back and unclasping the bra in one swift motion and quickly pulling it off of her body.
“Fuck.” Adelaide screamed as Tobias inserted another finger.
Before she’s able to release, Tobias pulls his fingers out and pulls himself up onto his knees and slowly pushes into her. He starts off slow to allow Adelaide to adjust before thrusting deeper and quicker. He moved his hand back towards her breasts rubbing her nipples with his thumbs, causing Adelaide to moan loudly.
It wasn’t much longer before the two of them hit their climaxes. Tobias then slowly pulled himself out and collapsed onto the bed. After a minute or so, he got back onto his knees and started to take the blindfold off of Adelaide.
“Let me see those pretty eyes.”
Adelaide laughed until the blindfold was off and she tried to open her eyes but the amount of light hitting her eyes caused her to close them tightly and cover her face with her hands. Tobias laughed and put his face in front of the light and took her hands off of her face.
Adelaide then slowly opened her eyes back up and the two of them smiled at each other. Tobias placed his hands on both sides of her face and gave Adelaide a deep kiss. After he pulled away, the two of them then adjusted so they were mostly under the covers of the bed.
“So what did you think of that?” Tobias asked.
“It was definitely different. Everything felt a lot stronger but it was good. Maybe something we could do when we’re back home.”
“Well I’m glad.”
Tobias gently grabbed her chin and pulled her in for another kiss. The two of them adjusted again so their bodies were intertwined with each other and they fell asleep.

Reset - Character Profiles: Tobias Carrick
Tumblr media
"Wait," the young boy wailed as he ran to the front of the palatial home. Pulling the heavy drapes to the side, his tiny hands made a futile attempt t open ornate windows. "Come back!" he cried, though they didn't hear.
"Tobias!" A kind-faced older woman ran after him, a bit winded as she attempted to catch up to him. "Tobias, come here, child. I've got your favorite cookies baking in the kitchen, and...."
"I don't want cookies!" he said as his lip began to quiver. "I want my Mom! I want my Dad!"
Abigail squatted beside the lad, scooping him up in her arms. "I know you do," she sighed, placing a loving kiss atop his head. "But your father was called away on business unexpectedly...."
"Mom wasn't!" He interrupted.
"No, but she needs to accompany him. It's only for a couple of days, they have assured me of that. We'll eat up those cookies and have such a good time, and they'll be back before you know it!"
"But they didn't even say goodbye!" he cried.
Abigail held the boy against her shoulder; she didn't want him to see the anger so plain on her face. She had made a career of covering their tracks when they mistreated their son, but she didn't have an answer for this. What kind of parents take off without even a word to their child?
"They thought you were sleeping, love," she whispered. "That is all. But they'll call as soon as they can, and even if you're asleep, I'll wake you to speak to them. I promise."
His little arms squeezed her tighter, and she had never felt such relief when she saw him smile as he pulled away. A smile that grew exponentially with his next sentence.
"So, Abby, when will my favorite cookies be ready?"
"Well, not long at all," she assured taking him by the hand. "What do you say we go to the kitchen and check on them right now."
All characters will have somewhat different backgrounds in this universe. Learn more about Tobias's below.
In this universe, Tobias is an only child. His parents are deceased; they died when their private jet crashed upon take off after the scene above. Tobias was seven years old. (I have not named them, but I cannot make it my beloved Charles and Vivian from canon!)
When they were alive, they were not very good to him. Like many extremely wealthy parents, their interests were centered on their business and social lives. Their main interest in their son was that he have the "proper" future.
He inherited his parent's estate upon their death, and it was put in trust for him until he was 21. His father's brother and wife oversaw the affairs, but he was raised by his nanny, Abigail Edwards, who loved Tobias like he was her own. Tobias lived alone in his big house with Abigail and some other staff until he began residing at Bellmont Hills Boarding School.
He was at Bellmont Hills from 7th - 12th grade, residing on campus five days a week and returning home to Abigail on the weekends. Tobias was an excellent student, but he was often involved in mischief. Mischief was overlooked because of the large endowment left to the school by his family.
Tobias's family estate was in Weston, Massachusetts, about 15 miles outside of Boston. Tobias was always very hesitant to move far away. Being near made him feel some form of connection to his late parents. As a result, he chose to attend Harvard, only deciding to attend Johns Hopkins because they had the best program for his field... and being the best was of paramount importance to him.
Tobias was definitely a "poor little rich boy." While Abby and some other longtime staff loved him like family, his own family really had little use for him. He knew his parents wanted him to be "the best," and that became his life obsession.
Beginning in high school, he was quite promiscuous. A lot of that stemmed from looking for love and attention. However, quantity and not quality of relationships seemed to be his driving factor. When we meet him, he has had a few significant relationships in his lifetime, but none lasting longer than two years. He has more or less sworn off the idea of ever having a serious relationship. Marriage, children, and all the trappings that come with that are not on his horizon.
Ethan was his first friend that was not from his economic strata, and it was life-changing. Tobias saw another way of life, often spending weekends in Providence with Ethan & Alan. The two were like brothers, and Tobias was fiercely protective of him... until their competitive natures turned their relationship toxic.
In this world, Tobias dated Diana during their time at Hopkins. It was the first time he was truly in love, and Ethan was a big factor in their demise (more to come). Tobias was furious and never forgave either of them. Most of the personal growth he had experienced during his time at Hopkins was undone after this. Leaving him much more shrewd and calculating in all aspects of his life.
He does try his hand at a serious relationship or two after Diana, but after they fizzle, he swears off of them for life.
Tobias's family was very tied to Mass Kenmore, and he is practically royalty there. That said, he works his ass off and is an excellent physician/director, but there is very little he couldn't get away with because of who he is.
While seeking to one-up Ethan isn't his main focus in life, Ethan is his nemesis, and he wouldn't pass up an opportunity to do so.

Personal Background
Nyla was born in Egypt, but moved with her family to Miami when she was three years old. They stayed there for a year with a close relative, then her father decided to move to Seattle when they have saved enough money
For the first few years of living in the US, their family has struggled financially
Though, despite those struggles, her parents have always prioritized Nyla and her siblings’ education, making sure that they could continue to learn in school
As an immigrant, Nyla was often belittled and bullied by her classmates, especially during elementary school. She was not (yet) fluent in English, so she would often mix up certain words and sentences
Things started to look up when her father was able to open up his own automobile repair shop, which instantly became popular in the neighborhood
However, when she came home one evening, she found her older brother laying on the floor, struggling to breathe. They rushed him to the hospital, but the hospital could not admit him due to lack of insurance. Her family moved him to another hospital, in hopes of him getting admitted and treated first, yet they were also declined in that hospital. As they rush to move him again to another hospital, her brother has passed away.
That specific moment became one of many reasons Nyla decided to be a doctor
Random Facts
Nyla loves swimming, and she got into the regional synchronized swimming squad when she was six years old.
One of her favorite childhood memory is riding the Seattle Great Wheel with her family when they first arrived at Seattle
Her current comfort show is Bridgerton
She always has a book in her bag wherever she goes, just in case she has some free time to read up
She would always bring white roses to her brother’s grave whenever she visits him
She met Marchia in middle school, and slowly became close friends as time flew by. They lost contact when Nyla got her internship at Mayo Clinic, but rekindled her friendship shortly after learning that Marchia became the Head of Diagnostics at Edenbrook
Her high-school superlative was: “Most Ambitious”
She suffers from fear of heights, or commonly known as acrophobia
Once, she bumped into Julia Roberts at the supermarket, and after asking Nyla tons of medical advice, they exchanged phone numbers. She still has her number to this day

Holiday Cheer 🎄 ❤️ 💚
Prompts: Christmas: @choicesdecember2023, @choicesficwriterscreations, @choicesholidays, @choicesflashfics (holiday prompt, in bold)
Pairing: Bryce x Olivia , Ethan x Merida (@lilyoffandoms), Tobias x Casey (@jerzwriter)
Book: Open Heart
Word Count: >700
Rating/Warnings: general
Synopsis: Olivia, Merida, and Casey decide to decorate the Diagnostic Office.
Tumblr media
The Diagnostic Office buzzed with festive energy as Olivia, Casey, and Merida decorated Ethan's office with holiday cheer. The trio, wearing holiday sweaters and festive headbands, worked diligently, preparing a surprise for their significant others. Boxes of decorations lay scattered across the room. In the center of the space lay a jumbled mess of tangled lights.
Casey grappled with the relentless knots in the string lights, muttering under her breath. The more of the knots she freed, the more the lights seemed to conspire, weaving her into their tangled web.
Merida offered her assistance, teasing her friend playfully. "Making friends with the lights, Casey? Or are they plotting a holiday takeover?"
"They seem a formidable foe," Olivia chimed in, giggling as she watched Casey try to unravel a particularly tangled section.
"Ugh! I feel like neurosurgery would be easier than this," Casey joked, tediously separating the stubbornly intertwined wires.
Olivia added miniature ornaments to the long strands of garlands strewn around the rooms, her eyes sparkling with joy. "I can't wait to see their faces when they walk in." She clapped her hands enthusiastically, unable to contain her excitement.
"Finally!" Casey jumped up, pumping her hands in the air in victory. She quickly gathered the lights, placing them in Olivia's arms. "They're all yours!"
"My pleasure!" Olivia took the lights, holding them up in front of her, deciding on their perfect placement.
A mischievous spark flickered in Casey's eyes as she caught Merida's attention. "Let's add a little extra surprise." She produced a small sprig of mistletoe from her bag.
Merida's brow arched. "Do you and Tobias really need another reason to be all over each other?"
"Oh, it's not for me," Casey teased, winking toward Merida. "I think we can all agree that a certain diagnostician would benefit from letting loose a little bit."
"I'm not sure he'll share your sentiment, but I'm willing to risk it. Who knows, maybe we'll see our own Christmas miracle," Merida retorted.
With stealthy precision, they positioned the mistletoe above the office doorway, chuckling at the playful addition to the festive decor.
The two stood beneath it, making sure it was safely secured, and somewhat out of sight.
Merida's gaze shifted between the decor and Casey. "If this doesn't get Ethan's attention, I'm sure I could find someone else to take advantage of it with?"
Casey shrugged coyly, curious by the prospect, "And, perhaps also even if he does!"
As the three friends finished up, the room transformed into a cozy haven adorned with twinkling lights and festive cheer.
Just then, the door swung open, and Bryce, Ethan, and Tobias entered, greeted by the sight of the dazzlingly decorated office. Their eyes widened in surprise and appreciation, well, at least for two of them.
“It looks like Santa threw up in here," Ethan grumbled.
"It's festive," Tobias quickly defended, admiring the decorations. "You gotta lighten up, Scrooge."
"I wish someone would decorate the O.R. like this," Bryce added gleefully.
"You do realize that none of this is sterile," Ethan interrupted. “So unless you plan to risk your patients lives, you do not wish someone to decorate the O.R.”
"Ignore him," Bryce wrapped his arms around Olivia, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "It's beautiful."
Ethan sighed, rubbing the space between his brows. He was truly outnumbered. He always was, but sometimes he had Olivia on his side. Not this time. “...It can stay," he mumbled reluctantly.
"It really wasn't an option," Casey smirked.
Ethan stepped further into his office, but his movements were halted.
"Not so fast—" Merida sauntered forward, pressing Ethan back under the doorway once more. "I believe you owe me a kiss."
"That's a juvenile tradition," he protested.
"Are you refusing? You know that's bad luck."
"You know I don't believe in luck."
Merida shook her head; she wanted to scold him but this was who he was, and she loved him for it. Her fingers flirted with his tie a moment, before she pulled him down to her, her lips crashing against his.
Their embrace was met by whistles and howls from their friends. The pair ignored them, their lingering kiss enduring.
Casey turned to Tobias, her voice soft, "Merry Christmas." Her lips met his tenderly.
Olivia leaned further into Bryce, letting the warmth and comfort of his embrace engulf her as she marveled at the beautiful lights and displays surrounding them.
Their jobs weren't always easy, and sometimes things could seem bleak, but right now, surrounded by their friends and such a cheerful display, everything seemed just right.

Hii 🥰
I saw this picture and thought it might inspire a fic or an edit (no pressure 🥰)
Tumblr media
I'm so sorry this took so long to answer @peonierose 🤦🏻‍♀️ I had a lot of Choices couples in mind for this picture 😂 It has taken me a while to think of just the right story for this one and I think I finally have. After seeing Ethan tortured in some of my fics recently, I decided to do a drabble of him and an OC I mentioned in A Glimpse. For this story, we see how these two got together.
(Ethan Ramsey x OC*Sophie Triano) with some urging from (Tobias Carrick x Chris Valentine) in a Choices Open Heart drabble

Something Sweet
"How was Bora Bora?" Ethan asked.
"Perfection itself." Tobias replied. "Chris and I had the best time there."
Ethan studied him. "You don't look very tan for a man who has been on an island for two weeks."
Tobias smirked. "But I do look tan enough for a man who was on a honeymoon with his wife."
Ethan rolled his eyes.
"Where's Chris?"
"Studying with Sienna." Tobias replied.
He eyed Ethan for a moment. Since they were alone, he decided to find out what happened after he and Chris left their wedding reception.
"By the way, how did you get back to the hotel?"
"How do you think?" Ethan replied.
"Who gave you a ride?" Tobias asked.
"Your brother did."
"Which one?"
Ethan stopped trying to complete some paperwork. He leaned back in his chair, set his hands behind his head, and focused silently on Tobias.
"It was Hugh." He finally said. "Why?"
"No reason." Tobias grumbled.
Ethan went back to work.
"If you rode with Hugh, then you must have ridden with Veronica."
"That would be a logical assumption since she is married to your brother." Ethan drily remarked.
Tobias refused to comment on that. "And if you were with Veronica, then you must have met her cousin, Sophie."
Ethan glanced up, eyes narrowed.
"So?" Tobias moved Ethan's laptop to the side. "What did you think of her?"
"She seems nice."
"Nice?" Tobias groaned. "Come on, Ethan."
"Can we get back to work or do you feel the need to bother me a little longer?"
Tobias shook his head. "Sophie is just your type."
"You haven't known my type since college." Ethan pointed out.
Tobias quirked an eyebrow and waited.
Ethan glared at him for the reminder he had fallen for Chris too.
"Sophie looks nothing like her." He bit out.
"I know that, but she has some similar personality traits that I think you'll like."
Tobias decided to drop that brief comparison when Ethan glared bordered on murderous.
"Hugh told me Sophie moved to Boston."
"She moved back to Boston." Ethan corrected, grateful to not be talking anymore about finding a woman like Chris. "Veronica and Sophie are expanding their business. She opened a bakery here a couple of months ago."
"Have you been by yet?"
Ethan rubbed a hand down his face. "I haven't."
He held his hand up to silence Tobias the moment he saw his mouth open.
"If I say I'll go by later this week, will you drop the subject and let me finish what I was typing?"
"I'll drop it for now, but we are discussing it again and again until you go see her." Tobias smirked at him.
"You are a colossal pain in my ass, you know that?" Ethan grumbled. "Go find someone else to bother."
"And leave you alone?" Tobias clucked his tongue in disapproval. "That wouldn't be very-- where are you going?"
"To see Sophie." Ethan snapped. "Right now, I'll do anything to get you to shut up!"
Tobias watched him storm out of the diagnostic office. He then sent a quick text to Chris, letting her know she could come inside.
So far, their plan to help Ethan find someone was off to a great start.
***************
"Don't breathe." Sophie whispered to those watching.
She carefully placed the last delicate sugar flower at an angle that defied gravity upon the five tier cake and carefully climbed off her step stool.
"Well?" She beamed at her staff. "What do you think?"
"I think we need to take them off now and store them before one breaks." Her store manager, Terry, declared. "You've got three more cakes to work on this week and the last thing we need is--"
"Ms. Triano!" One of the employees called out. "You have a visitor at the front."
Terry's voice went a higher octave when she began to leave.
"Sophie!" He cried. "The flowers!"
"They'll be fine." She winked at him. "You worry too much."
She chuckled over his look of disbelief.
Sophie couldn't help but be optimistic that all was working like she and Veronica planned. Ever since they were little girls with their Easy Bake ovens, they knew they wanted to open their own bakery one day. With their family's support, the two cousins graduated from the French Culinary Institute and opened up a bakery in New York.
It wasn't long before their cakes were featured in bridal magazines across the globe. Veronica and Sophie entered competitions on Food Network to gain even more exposure. Soon, they had orders years in advance for their baked treats.
They knew they should expand, but what made their cakes so popular, was that they each made every part of it themselves. They had staff to help with the mixing and all, but they were the true cake artists. Everything they designed from sugar blew everyone's mind.
For the first time in ten years, the cousins worked apart. Veronica needed to stay in New York with Hugh's work being there and their children were happy in their current schools. Since Sophie was single with no children of her own, she was the one to volunteer to open another bakery.
She'd wanted to come back to Boston for a while now. Though she thoroughly enjoyed working in New York, there was nothing like being back in her hometown. She needed that sense of comfort as she made all the decisions on her own. She still called Veronica multiple times a day, but this venture rested mostly upon her shoulders.
Sophie straightened her chef's jacket as she crossed into the main bakery. Cases gleamed under Edison bulbs revealing a variety of desserts. Cookies, tarts, pies, scones, cakes, etc. were all on display to tempt everyone who walked through her door. She did a quick visual sweep to make sure everything was up to her high standards before looking for her visitor.
Her eyes widened at the sight of the doctor she'd met at Tobias and Chris's wedding. Of all the people she thought she would see again, Ethan Ramsey seemed the least likely.
It wasn't that he ignored her at the wedding. He even talked to her about her bakery. He simply seemed to be preoccupied with something else.
***************
Ethan watched as she made her way over to him. He'd thought she was pretty the night he met her, but seeing her in chef's mode brought a smile to his face. She was in her element and the confidence rolled off of her adding even more to her beauty.
"Hey." She smiled at him. "What are you doing here?"
"You said I could come anytime I wanted something sweet." He spread his arms. "Here I am."
"And just what do you crave, Ethan?" She teased. "Are you a sugary puff kind of man or do you want something bitter?"
"No sugary puffs" He walked over to look at her offerings. "Though I will admit that most of this makes me think a diabetic coma might be worth it."
She laughed. "Follow me, Dr. Ramsey."
His eyebrow raised as he followed her off to a smaller room. There was a table and a set of chairs along with a cooler filled with various drinks.
"Have a seat." Sophie insisted.
She sat down across from him, pulled out a small notebook from her pocket and clicked a pen open.
"Now then." She raised her eyes to his. "Would you mind answering a few questions?"
"For?" He countered.
"To learn all your secrets." She replied.
His eyes widened.
Sophie laughed, shaking her head. "Easy there. I was teasing you. I'm wanting to understand your palette."
Ethan actually flushed.
"Then, yes, go ahead."
"Just say the first word that comes to mind." Sophie told him. "Fruit?"
"Apple."
Sophie wrinkled her nose.
"What's wrong with apples?"
"Nothing. I'm not a big fan of them. I'm more of a berry girl."
Her gaze dropped down to his white doctor's coat. "Though I guess I shouldn't be surprised with you saying apple."
Ethan relaxed in his chair. "They are good for you."
"I'll stick with raspberries."
"I like those too." Ethan added.
"You do?" She set her pen down. "Do you like dark chocolate?
"I do." He replied.
Sophie got to her feet. "Wait here."
She went through a set of double doors and returned with a slice of chocolate cake covered in a dark chocolate ganache.
"Try this." She handed him a fork.
Ethan's eyes widened with the first bite. A medley of the tart raspberry compote with slightly sweet chocolate left him wanting more.
"Good?" She prodded.
"It's incredible." He took another bite. "Best cake I've had in a long time."
She beamed at him. "Talk like that will make you my favorite customer."
He chuckled. "I'm tempted to buy the rest of the cake."
"No need."
She went back through the double doors and before they could shut, she was back with a black box tied with a white bow in her hands.
"You boxed the cake up before I even tried it?"
Sophie nodded a touch proudly. "I knew you would love it."
"How much do I owe you?" He got to his feet, reaching for his wallet.
"It's on the house." She replied.
"Oh." Ethan took the box from her. "Thank you."
Terry stuck his head through the double doors.
"Sophie!" He hissed without looking at Ethan. "The flowers! Carlton bumped the table and gave me a mild heat attack. Get them back into storage!"
Sophie pinched the bridge of her nose. "I'll be right there."
"You have flowers too?" Ethan asked.
"No. I make them." She waved goodbye. "Drop by anytime Dr. Ramsey."
Sophie paused at the door and winked at him. "I might even give you something else you'll love."
Ethan blinked in surprise once she disappeared. He wasn't quite certain how to take her parting words.
He frowned in thought during the drive back to the hospital.
"She meant more desserts." He told himself. "That's all she could have meant."
Once at Edenbrook, he sat in his car a few extra minutes. He eyed the black box and knew why he couldn't stop trying to see hidden meanings in her words and actions. He'd allowed Tobias to get in his head about there possibly being something more with Sophie.
He refused to give it another thought. He was too busy and too intelligent to ponder what women meant when talking to him. Of course, if Sophie did mean it in a flirtatious manner, then he would naturally respond in either a flirty fashion of his own or cold disinterest.
He picked up the box, a hint of a smile on his lips as he thought of her knowing he would love her cake.
If she was interested in him, he might be interested in her to.
*******************
A couple of days later...
"Any plans for your days off?" Chris asked.
Ethan kept pace with her as they walked towards their patient's room. "I'm going to the ballet Thursday night. They are performing The Sleeping Beauty."
"Oh?" Chris couldn't help but smile. "That sounds awfully romantic."
Ethan softly groaned. He knew what was coming next.
"Do you have anyone in particular you're taking with you?" Chris prodded, trying her best to look innocent.
"Chris." Ethan grumbled.
"Yes?" She was completely unfazed by the way he said her name.
"Tobias is rubbing off on you."
"I do more than rubbing." Tobias remarked from behind them.
Chris swatted him playfully with the file folder in her hand.
"What are we talking about?" Tobias asked, once he was walking along her other side.
"Ethan has a romantic night planned." Chris explained before Ethan could get a word out.
"Really?" Tobias looked over her head at him. "About time."
"I was just about to find out who Ethan invited to share this romantic night at the ballet."
"The ballet." Tobias slipped his arm around Chris when he noticed Ethan's face contort into irritated anger. "Can't set the mood much better than that."
"Enough!" Ethan snapped. "I'm not taking anyone to the ballet!"
"Why not?" Chris stopped him from walking on.
She placed her hands on her hips and backed him into the wall with her narrowed eyes and clipped tone.
"Are you honestly going to stand there and tell me that you are going to spend an evening of dinner and ballet without a date?!"
"I," Ethan hesitated. "Um..."
There was something about Chris's temper that made everyone take a step back. Even he got caught off guard from time to time.
But he wasn't in any mood for it today.
He glared down at her. He decided he wasn't going to be cowed by his former protege.
"I am planning an evening of enjoyment for myself."
Chris threw her hands up in exasperation, almost hitting both Ethan and Tobias in their faces.
"Men!" She grumbled. "Such a waste of bloody oxygen half the time."
Tobias groaned. "Welp, you set her off for the day. No man will be safe."
Ethan winced when Tobias smacked him on the back of the head.
"Don't tell her about your evenings for a party of one." He began to follow his wife. "She won't like it, then I'm the one left to deal with the fallout."
"She shouldn't be interested in what I do." Ethan grumbled.
Tobias shot a frustrated glance filled with pity towards him.
"What?" Ethan demanded.
"Chris cares about you." Tobias reminded him. "Once she calls you her friend, there is no escaping her concern. You know this about her."
Ethan stopped in his tracks. It was strange that it didn't hurt as much anymore thinking about Chris caring about him as nothing more than a friend. After their tumultuous year when she first arrived at Edenbrook, then having to go through seeing her fall in love with Tobias; Ethan was surprised they had survived it all to end up friends.
Maybe he was ready to move on and see what could happen next.
*******************
He decided he was ready to have a significant other as he ate dinner alone. Going to the ballet without someone there to talk to had lost the allure it once held. He still enjoyed his solitude, especially with the friends he had somehow become stuck with. This evening though would have been perfect for someone special.
As he walked into the Boston Opera House's lobby, he bumped into Sophie.
"Excuse me--Ethan!" She smiled at him. "Hello."
"Sophie," he glanced around to see if she was with a date, "it's good to see you again."
"You too." She too tried to see if he was with someone. "Are you a fan of the theatre arts?"
"I am." He cleared his throat. "Are you here alone?"
"Yes," she rolled her eyes, "I was given the Mcculler's box in thanks for doing a rush job on a cake for one of their parties. I've been looking forward to this night for weeks but couldn't find anyone who wanted to see The Sleeping Beauty with me."
Ethan's lips curved some. "I've rarely found anyone who enjoys coming here as much as I do."
"Where are your seats?" She asked.
"The Mezzanine, center." He replied.
"I don't suppose you'd like to join me instead?" She held up the two tickets she'd been given. "If you're alone, that is."
"I'd love to."
**********************
Ethan spent most of the ballet studying Sophie. There was something about her that seemed to give a sense of peace that he'd never experienced with anyone else. She was completely still, yet relaxed in her seat. Her eyes followed the movements on the stage while a slight smile graced her lips.
He then took in the rest of her. Sophie's dark chestnut hair cascaded down her shoulders. The white dress she wore was flattering to her figure. His eyes drifted down to her hands loosely clasped in her lap.
She was, he noted, the exact opposite of Chris. He wondered if Tobias had done this on purpose. Unlike the very tall, pale skin, green eyed, red headed Scottish doctor he'd first fallen for, Sophie was of a more average height, caramel colored skin, topped off with a pair of dark brown eyes and hair.
She was striking in her beauty. He realized he hadn't really appreciated that fact the last couple of times he'd seen her. He suspected that getting over his former love had clouded his mind from taking in the lady beside him.
****************
Sophie could practically feel Ethan's eyes on her. It took all her strength to remain relaxed in her seat. She couldn't recall the last time a man had studied her so intently. Men hit on her, but no one actually looked at her the way he was doing right now.
She didn't know if it was those piercing blue eyes of his or the type of man he was, but her nerves were notched so high that if he remotely made a move toward her, she'd probably tackle him where he sat.
She thought he was handsome the night she met him. She found him almost cute dressed as a doctor. But something about him in his suit, sitting beside her in the dark, made him almost irresistible.
Veronica told her she needed to get out and date more. Maybe she was right. Sophie had not been with anyone for nearly a year in preparing for the move back to Boston. Most of the men who came into her bakery were already in a relationship. It was rare anyone single came in, much less asked to speak to her.
Since she spent most of her time in the back decorating and supervising, she never had a chance to flirt with any of the few male customers who came in for treats to take to their offices.
Maybe that was why Ethan's attention affected her so strongly. She'd been longing for a relationship and hadn't even known it.
******************
The lobby of the Boston Opera House...
"I was thinking about going to get something to eat." Sophie looked up at him. "Any chance you'd care to have a late dinner with me?"
Ethan hesitated.
Sophie immediately regretted asking him.
"I actually ate earlier." He glanced at his watch. "How--"
"No problem." She nervously tucked a lock of her hair behind her ear. "Thanks for sitting with me."
Sophie began to walk away, waving goodbye to him.
"Wait!" He caught up to her. "I was about to ask if you'd rather come to my place for dinner. It's late and most of the restaurants that your dress is meant for will be closing."
"Oh." She couldn't help but smile. "I don't want to put you to any trouble."
"No trouble at all. I enjoy cooking on my nights off." He offered his arm to her. "How did you get here?"
"Taxi." She placed her hand within the bend of his arm.
"Good. Then I can drive you home later."
*****************
When Ethan pulled up to his apartment building, Sophie's jaw dropped.
"You live here?"
"Yes, why?" He asked.
"Because I live here!" She pointed at the building. "Twelfth floor. Apartment B."
"I'm on the seventeenth." He told her.
Ethan couldn't believe he'd been living in the same building as Sophie all this time yet had never crossed paths with her.
Or had he and he simply hadn't noticed?
"You won't have to worry about driving me home now." She teased.
He smiled at her. "I can still walk you to your door."
Sophie laughed while getting out. "I'd like that."
Once in the elevator, she turned towards him. "Would you mind if I stopped at my place first and changed clothes?"
"No."
"These shoes have to go." She told him.
Sophie grasped his arm to balance as she slipped the painful high heels off.
Ethan watched her with a touch of amusement as she scooped up the pair with a soft curse.
"I won't be long." She told him while stepping out on her floor, casting a warm smile at him over her shoulder.
"Seventeen B." He reminded her.
"I'll be there." She promised.
*****************
Ethan quickly undressed the moment he shut his door. Tossing the finely made suit jacket and pants into his closet, he next tackled his shirt and tie. He settled on a light blue t-shirt to wear along with a pair of blue jeans. While pulling his pants on, he stumbled cursing into his kitchen to see what ingredients he had on hand for Sophie.
Her knock a couple of minutes later made him steady himself. He paused a moment realizing that he was actually excited about the prospect of getting to know her a little better.
He opened the door to find her casually leaning against the door frame. She'd put on a t-shirt like he had along with a pair of jeans. Sophie held up a bottle of wine with a hesitant smile.
"I wasn't certain what we were going to have, but I can say this is an excellent pinot grigio."
Ethan took the bottle from her, his brow furrowing with what to cook.
"Uh oh." She teased. "Is my choice of wine that bad?"
He looked up at her. "Not at all. I was thinking of what I could pair with it."
"Honestly Ethan," Sophie set her keys on his side table, "I'm up for anything. A simple ham sandwich would be great right now."
He snorted as he led her into his kitchen.
"I think I can do a little better than a ham sandwich."
"Really?" She settled comfortably on one of his bar stools. "Well now I am curious to see your cooking skills in action."
"I doubt they compare to yours." He remarked over his shoulder.
He began to gather the ingredients to make Tuscan chicken.
"Anything's better than mine."
Ethan' eyebrows raised in disbelief. "Sophie, you own a bakery and develop recipes for it on a daily basis."
She waved that off as if it was no big deal.
"The thing is," she confessed, "I can make desserts in my sleep, but savory dishes are where I mess up."
"Are you saying that you--"
"Can't cook." She admitted with a grin. "It baffles everyone I meet. Give me sugar and flour and I'm good, great even. Hand me that chicken and tomatoes and spinach and I'm going to destroy them as soon as I put them into a pan."
Ethan shook his head with a laugh. "I'm the opposite."
"You can't make desserts?"
"Not even pancakes." He explained about the meals he used to cook for him and his father. "Dad would just bring home ice cream or a box of cookies for us to have with our meals. He insisted I never pick up a bag of sugar "
Sophie laughed, feeling more at ease around him.
As the two talked, Ethan went through the prep work with ease. He uncorked the bottle of wine then led her into his living room. The pair sat down somewhat close, angling their bodies toward each other as they continued to talk about their lives.
He discovered that the thirty-three year old was highly intelligent, not just in the culinary world but in other aspects such as business and even history. Her ability to use humor here and there with her stories only added even more to her ability to hold his attention.
After spending so much time at Edenbrook, Ethan had forgotten that people outside of medicine could be a nice change of pace. He also found that she could easily grasp what he was talking about as he described what he did on the diagnostic team. Her questions were well thought out and actually made him pause a time or two to consider the answers.
When dinner was ready, they sat at his table, lights dimmed as they continued learning about the other.
It was, he decided, one of the best meals he'd had in a long time.
"Ethan, that was amazing." Sophie declared.
"Thank you." He got up to take their empty plates.
"I insist on doing the dishes." She took them out of his grasp. "And to make you dessert in thanks for cooking for me."
"There's no need." He followed her to his sink. "Like I told you, it was nice to cook for someone other than myself."
"If you ever need to do so again," she winked at him, "I won't be opposed to you calling me."
"Don't be surprised to hear from me often." He smiled at her, reaching over to finish up the dishes. "Go relax. I know you've been on your feet all day."
Sophie shook her head. "I feel reenergized. I haven't had a home cooked meal since I moved back to Boston. I sponged off Hugh and Veronica's meals once a week in New York along with having a set of restaurants around town to deliver my favorite comfort foods."
Sophie went into his pantry. Her eyes darted here and there as she went through the ingredients he had on hand. After another peek into his fridge, she set out everything to make a quick batch of sugar cookies.
"I see you found the raspberries I picked up earlier today." He teased.
Sophie blinked then remembered their conversation in her bakery.
"I hope I inspired such a wise decision." She quipped.
"You did." He picked up one of the cartons she'd set out. "Want me to clean these for you?"
She nodded while measuring her dry ingredients.
Ethan watched fascinated as she went through everything without having to check a recipe. She moved with a precision he'd only seen in the operating theater at Edenbrook.
"These won't be as pretty as my cookies at work." She explained while dropping spoonfuls on a cookie sheet. "But they'll still taste just as good.
"And what are the raspberries for?" He asked.
"Frosting of course." She smiled at him. "And I'm going to teach you how to make it."
"I believe I told you that sugar and I don't get along in the kitchen." He got up and came around the counter.
"And yet you have powdered sugar in your pantry." She teased.
"That was a mistake." Ethan explained. "The grocery store was out of granulated sugar and for some reason the delivery person assumed powdered could be substituted in its place."
Sophie laughed over the disgruntled expression on his face.
"I bet your coffee hasn't been the same since."
"It hasn't." He grumbled, smiling as he looked at her. "You can take that powdered sugar with you. After tonight, I never want to see it again."
"You'll want it after this lesson." She nudged him with her elbow. "Just imagine the look on your father's face when you present him with a cake or cookie with your homemade frosting."
"That's assuming I can make it or even the pretend cake and cookie you added to this scenario."
"Shh!" She playfully scolded. "You're ruining my future triumph."
"If I learn this," Ethan countered, "then you'll have to let me teach you something next time."
Sophie lowered her head, fighting a huge smile. "Next time, hmm?"
"You'll be learning how to make one of the dishes that you consider your comfort food." He told her.
"And when would this lesson happen?" She prodded, pretending to direct her attention to his food processor.
"I'm off tomorrow." Ethan stepped a little closer to her. "Or if next week at this same time would be better for you..."
"Either works for me." She added some more raspberries to the food processor. "I have tomorrow off too since I'll be working Saturday."
Ethan's voice held a touch of heat when he moved even closer to her.
"Then tomorrow it is."
Sophie could feel her heart race as she looked up at him. Her eyes fluttered closed the moment his lips brushed hers in a soft, tender kiss.
She sank into him the moment the kiss deepened. Her arms wound around his neck, fingers drifting into his hair as he molded her to his body.
The oven's buzzer broke them apart.
"That was a devious way to get out of your cooking lesson." She teased once she removed the cookies from the oven. "I'll have to remember to use it tomorrow night."
Ethan chuckled, moving behind her. He slipped his arms around her waist, placing slow unhurried kisses along her neck.
"We should work on the frosting." She bit back a moan when his hands began to wander.
"Doesn't the butter need to be room temperature?" He muttered against her ear.
"You're right." She turned in his arms, capturing his lips in a passionate kiss that left him moaning.
She ran her hands down the hard planes of his chest, a slight smile curving her lips.
"We have anywhere from thirty minutes to an hour to allow the butter time to reach room temperature."
"I think an hour would be best." He tugged her toward his couch. "Don't you?"
"I do." She gasped when he yanked her into his lap. "Maybe even longer."
********************
Two days later...
"What's this?" Tobias gestured to the plate of cookies.
"I did some cooking while off." Ethan told him.
Chris reached over to try one. She made a humming sound of delight.
"These are so good! I love raspberries."
Tobias reached for one. "I didn't know you baked, Ethan."
"I'm learning." He replied with a smirk.
Chris and Tobias shared a loaded glance.
"Is there someone giving you lessons?" Chris asked.
She couldn't help but be hopeful that a certain pastry chef was becoming a part of his life.
"There is." Ethan picked up the case files and smiled at the couple. "Expect a lot more treats like those these next few weeks."

When does it stop? The pain, the loneliness, the tears?
The love?
When you find that person, the one that gets you, the one that understands you and completes you… that person that makes your eyes sparkle without even trying, that makes flowers smell brighter or even your favorite coffee taste better…
How do you say ‘goodbye’?
Can your heart even let go? Does it ever let go? When do you stop seeing them in your dreams? Smelling their skin in a light breeze? Hearing their voice in every song?
I fell in love. And now, I'm begging for someone to tell me: how do you fall out?
It's been almost six months since Ethan left me.  Six months. It feels like we were just together yesterday, whispering secret promises to one another as our eyelashes and fingertips danced in flutters across our bare bodies. It was simple, yet intimate. We acted as if we would be doing it everyday for the rest of our lives.
And yet, we fell apart for what feels like decades ago. I mean, I'm a completely different person now, some days unable to recognize myself in the mirror. Still, in so many ways, I'm very much that broken girl who lucked out and found a boy. A lovely boy. A boy who gave me his whole heart.
Six months.  I miss him. And I still love him.
I woke up to a text from him, inviting me to meet him for lunch before my clinic appointment. I didn't want to pass up the chance of actually getting to talk. So, with a belly full of nerves, I agree to meet him at a place near Edenbrook Hospital.
It was pretty warm out today in Boston. Getting out of bed has become easier for me over the past month, so I decided to enjoy my breakfast in the company of the rays of the early-September sun. The heat breathed life back into my skin, giving me a much-needed boost of serotonin. And just like that, something felt different about today. Better different.
For once in the past several months, life isn't overcast and gloomy.  Although I wake up missing Ethan, I don't feel my usual sense of dread and sadness. I'm not overwhelmed with the stifling sense of doom or that life would be much better if...well, nevermind. Rather hope blooms in my chest, like maybe I can–no, like maybe I will overcome this. Today was going to be a good day.
I decided to venture out and explore. I moved in just before residency in July, and living with the crazy schedule of an intern, I never had a chance to explore the new city. And since Beantown will be home for at least three years, I might as well get used to it.
After struggling to find something to wear, I strapped on my shoes and headed out to run some errands before I met up with him. I had an important conference call this morning with my advisor at Johns Hopkins, a board representative, and the residency coordinator with Mass Kenmore.  They've been incredibly supportive of my career decisions, especially after I turned down my residency spot soon after graduation. They understood my need for an interim hiatus, and were able to grant me my request with stipulations, which included working in a research laboratory part-time. Who knows? When I finally figure out my passion, my sharpened skills in pharmaceutical research may save lives… that is if I ever feel passion again.
Looking at my watch, I scury to catch the T to the medical district to meet him for lunch in fifteen minutes. Of course, it's crowded as I grip tightly to the metal railing of the moving tram. Shit, I hope I'm not late. He's trying to reach out after everything we've been through, and… well, I don't want him to think I'm not taking things seriously.
My anxiety betrays me as I swallow thickly. Along with the abrupt motions of the locomotive and the overbearing smells of skunked perfume, body odor and fried food, my breakfast threatens to make an appearance. I close my eyes, taking some deep breaths. Slowly inhale through my mouth, slowly exhale back out. Slowly inhale…
A hand grazes my shoulder; my eyes startle open only to find a kind, older gentleman with a Red Sox cap smiling empathically at me. Looking me over, he recognizes my situation, and kindly offers me his seat, guiding me to it. Maybe chivalry isn't dead.
I graciously thank him, finding solace in the empty spot before checking my watch again. Eleven minutes. I think I'm going to be just fine.
With two minutes to spare, I walk into our meeting location: a bar called Donahue's. Since I’ve beat him here, I go ahead and get situated at an empty table where he can easily see and find me. I feel weird coming to a bar during the day–even the bartender gave me an eyebrow before I ordered my water, but I've heard that it's more than a boozy-place, that the bar food here is decent.
A bell rings out as another patron walks into the dimly lit area. Not him. He grabs a long neck before joining a group of men in scrubs. I look to my right and see more people dressed in medical attire, which I guess makes sense; the bar is situated in the middle of several major hospitals.
The door chimes again, my heart dropping in anticipation, but it's a false alarm as a cute brunette in purple scrubs bounces into the place, ordering a round of shots. I hope this is the night shift…
I catch a whiff of something delectable, my stomach growling with demands. I grab a menu and begin to thumb through it, everything looking delectable. My mouth salivates as I make a mental note of their appetizers as I peruse over to their list of desserts.
But then, I freeze. I'm suddenly paralyzed as an eerie, familiar feeling washes over me. Haunting me. Someone is watching. I can feel their stare.
Glancing up, I gasp, the color draining from my face as my eyes prick with the threat of tears.
It… it can't be.
What's he doing here? He can't see me here. Not like this.
----------
Ethan
"Have a good one."
I wave goodbye to one of the newest arrivals at Johns Hopkins. So bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Filled with so much hope of making changes in the world of medicine. He was probably the top of his class, 4.2 GPA, president of his pre-med club. Complete nerd.
I recognize him. I was the same way when I first arrived.
Before…
He and his parents moved the last piece of furniture from my Baltimore apartment this evening. I relocated to Boston back in July to start my residency in a highly regarded, highly competitive diagnostics program.  Today is finally the last day of my lease in the old place, so I came back one last time to clean up and turn in my keys.
And also, to get rid of that piece. I should've just thrown it away, but it was new, barely even a year old. It seemed like such a waste. I had listed it last week on a private med student bulletin board.
Free bed. Good condition. Pick up only. Within hours, it was claimed. And I was relieved.
Just get it out of here.
I lock the front door as I turn to clean the master bedroom that is now completely empty. But, truth be told, this room has been vacant for a while. I hated coming in here. Well, after.
As the vacuum cleaner whirls to life, I push and pull across the carpet, gliding effortlessly… that is until I hear a giant clunk, followed by rapid tinks and thuds under the wheel.
Damnit.
Laying down the clumsy appliance, I squat low to the ground, looking under the bristles for the culprit of the noisy clog. And there it is. A hair-tie.
Her hair-tie.
Wiggling it free, I hold it in my hands, inspecting it. I stare at the taupe-colored elastic for a few moments before chuckling under my breath. What was I expecting the damn thing to do? Take my heartache away? Erase the pain of the past six months?
It really wasn't anything special, just another piece of trash to toss.
Just like me.
For as long as I can remember, I had a well-erected facade that gave the impression that I was tough while keeping people away. And it worked. I'm not jaded; it's just a fact of life that I learned when I was younger: people will let you down.
I don't need others; I don't need help. Once you show vulnerability to someone, once you expose the weakest part of your armor, they know how to hurt you. And I refuse to be weak.
But then… hell, she happened. And for a moment in time, I had someone in my corner, someone I could trust, someone who put me, all of me, before themselves. Shit, even my own mother couldn't even do that, and Lord knows, my dad tried. But Tatum? Damnit…
Tatum saw my full potential.  She saw beyond my brokenness, my shit attitude, my shortcomings. I didn't feel this intrinsic need to prove myself to anyone anymore because this amazing woman believed in me–like truly believed in my intelligence, my skills. She made me believe I was meant for greater than what I thought was possible.
We called it love.
I really thought it was.
But I was fooling myself. She fooled me, and now I'm left with thoughts and memories of a time that should never have happened in the first place.
[6 months ago…]
"Thanks for the ride, man," Ethan taps on the hood of his colleague's car before waving goodbye.  He throws his duffle bag over his shoulder before quickly jogging through the light rain to his apartment building
His research elective group had finished early in Houston on Thursday afternoon, and the students were given an opportunity to return home.  Several students wanted to take advantage of what otherwise would have been their Spring Break, so they chose to stay and explore Space City.
Ethan, being a creature of habit, was ready to get home and get back into his daily routine. He hated living out of a suitcase, not to mention he missed his bed and home cooked meals. But most of all, he missed his girlfriend Tatum. Because their elective schedules ran at different times during the day, they weren't able to talk despite trying to exchange text messages. Tatum seemed to be having a difficult time about something–Ethan wasn't too sure, but he knew that coming home early to surprise her would make-up for all of the missed texts and phone calls.
Especially with what he was about to do.
Ethan finally reaches the covered porch to his home, shaking his head and arms to get rid of the excess rain droplets. He then checks his pockets to ensure he had everything with him: wallet, phone, keys.
And then his pulse begins to race, a crooked grin crawling across his stubbled chin. He had to check one more item… just one more time. He needs to make sure everything came back with him from his trip.
Setting his bag on the ground, Ethan unzips a secret side compartment that was holding a pair of socks nearly tucked away at the bottom of the pocket. After reaching in and grabbing them, he unrolls the socks carefully before reaching inside the reinforced toe to pull out a small, black velvet box.
He tenderly opens the lid, and a lump suddenly lodges in his throat as a stinging surge of tears hits his vision. He was doing this. He was actually doing this.
As he stares at the diamond solitaire, all he can see is his Tatum, and the bright and beautiful world they created together. He never realized he was lost until she found him; he never realized he was drowning until she taught him to breathe again. It's like he was blind, but because of her, everything is finally clear.
She's the one.
Ethan chuckles to himself as he closes the box, hearing his father's warning when he called to tell him that he was proposing to Tatum.  "Don't fuck this up, Ethan J."
Shaking his head, he slips the box back into his duffle before using his keys to unlock the front door. He gently pushes it open, hoping not to wake up his future bride.
Walking into the darkened apartment, Ethan is greeted with the alluring essence of home– that is until he accidentally trips over a pair of boots.
A familiar pair of men's boots.
A pair that doesn't belong to him.
Suddenly a pained moan infiltrates the air followed by muffled sobs and groans. Tatum.
Was she… was she alright?
Ethan anxiously storms to his bedroom. He wasn't sure what he was about to walk in on. He knew something had happened to Tatum this week, something that really bothered her that spurred her to call and message him so many times even though they both knew they'd be out of commission.
Shit. An abrupt flash of guilt crashes through Ethan's body. Whatever she dealt with, was she up early, crying about it? Was she having nightmares about it? Maybe even terrors? He didn't realize it was that bad. Shit, if only he had known… he needs to hold her. And love on her. Now.
He pushes open the door.
And the wind tears wildly out of his lungs, his body paralyzed, completely abandoned of sound thought or response.
He blinks his eyes a few times, assured that something was wrong with his contacts. He can't be seeing this correctly.
It's too dark. He flips the overhead light on because surely–surely–he wasn't seeing things correctly.
But then she says his name.
In the most guilty, tear-ladened, shameful tone he has ever heard her utter.
Like a confession.
“Ethan?”
Time seems to halt as his heartbeat roars to life in his ears. A heavy weight presses into his chest as he begins to heave… and then gasp for air.  Bile creeps up the back of his throat, his jaw souring with ache.
Ethan then abruptly keels over, hands on his knees, and begins to wretch.
[present...]
We should never have happened.
At least I keep trying to convince myself that.
Or maybe we should've…because it's better to have loved and loss… or some bullshit like that…
Goddammit, I hate her.  I hate her so fucking much. For making me care, for making me vulnerable, for making me believe that this was different, that we were special.
And yet, here I am still thinking about her, wondering about her. Missing her.
She was my world. I gave her my everything; I shared with her parts of me that I was too stubborn, too scared, or too embarrassed to believe even existed.
Now, I'm left with a wound that is ripped open daily by my incessant, self-inflicted thoughts of her.
And yet, I'd let her break my heart all over again.  If it meant I could smell her hair, feel each last strand pass through my fingertips, let wayward wisps catch in my lips as I kiss her? Just to have one more chance?  Ruin me.
And then I'd beg her to stay with me forever.
And yet, I'd let her break my heart all over again, if it meant I could smell her hair just one more time. Are you kidding me? If I could just feel every last strand pass through my fingertips, let those soft wayward wisps catch in my lips as I kiss her just one more goddamn time? Please, just wreck me, ruin me. Destroy me.
Fuck, Ethan, what is wrong with you? I'm sick of this nightmare, of her evading my thoughts and my dreams. I'm sick of feeling my body betray me, my cock still responding to even just the mention of her name.
She cheated on you. She fucked your best friend, you idiot. Remember that next time you're fisting yourself in the shower, murmuring her name…
Jesus, I want to forget Tatum Erikson. I want to forget her smell, her taste. Now with our apartment gone, I just want–no, I need her gone from every thought, from every single fiber of my being.
She's… my past.
Shoving the hair tie in the trash, I grab my cleaning supplies and the apartment keys and head out to my hotel room. I have an early flight to catch in the morning followed by a pretty packed afternoon back in Boston. A hot shower and a good night's sleep is the perfect remedy after today.
If I can keep my hands to myself…
---
Thank God, that trip is over. As soon as we landed, I got my carryon, picked up my truck and headed back to my shared loft in the city. I feel a sense of absolution, like things are finally taken care of, finished, as if finally turning in the apartment key was the missing piece of moving on from… well, you know.
Here's to hoping…
I slept like shit last night…not that my dick minded. It got more attention than I intended on giving it in hopes of tiring myself out, both physically and mentally. Greedy little bastard…
Out of frustration, I gave in to temptation… and texted her this morning. Yes, I know it was stupid. It was really stupid, and it could possibly fuck me up further, not to mention it could really blur the lines between us. But to my surprise, she actually agreed to meet up with me at Donahue's for lunch.
Sure, let's create more problems, Ethan…
I arrive early at the bar, saying ‘hello’ to a few colleagues as I stop to grab a drink. After the past few days, not to mention the interaction I'm about to have, I feel like I've earned myself a drink or two, both as a reward and for courage.
"Hey, Dr. Ramsey!" The bartender smiles brightly, wiping down the bar. "The usual?"
"Hey, uh, yeah. Sure…" Ronnie? Ryan? Reggie? I'm a shit person. This guy knows my drink order, and I don't even have the decency to learn his first name.
"What brings you in during the lunch crowd, my good man?" He flips over a bottle, draining an amber-colored liquid in a tumbler.
"I, um," I stutter, pushing a hand in my pocket as I lean against the wooden ledge. "I'm meeting someone."
"Ohhhh," he nods as if I just told him a secret. He raises an eyebrow to me, "a lady friend?"
Guilty. "Sorta.”
He snickers, “an afternoon delight!”
I can feel the crimson crawling up my neck. “Uh, it's… it’s complicated."
"Ain't it always?"  He twirls my glass towards me before dipping his head. "Good luck," he chuckles as he slides down the way to help another patron.
I give him a nod as I drop some cash towards his station. I take my drink and casually pull from it, enjoying the heated notes of citrus dancing on my tongue. Feeling the comforting burn, I survey the dimly lit area, recognizing a few other residents in other programs, but I keep to myself, waiting for her.
But then all of a sudden out of the corner of my eye, it's… fuck. It's her. Tatum.  She's sitting at a table alone, fidgeting with a menu, looking every bit beautiful as she nervously combs and tosses her blonde waves with her fingers.
I smirk to myself. It's longer. I like it.
But there's something different about her, something I can't quite put my finger on. She's… sad. She has a staged smile on her pretty features, but there's a vacancy in her eyes; there's an emptiness in her demeanor, like she's broken, like she's… someone else. The Tatum I knew had a fire, a fierce joy that could ignite a room with one glance.
Is she… was this because…
Were we in the same boat? Is she miserable, still lost and sad over us? Over our break-up?
Oh, Tate baby…
Does she miss me like I miss her? Does she love me like I…?
Shit, what do I do? I can't just walk up to her, say, 'hello,' especially since all I want to do right now… is take her in my arms and hold her.
Would she let me take away the pain? Would she give me the chance–give us the chance to work things out? Could she forgive me?
Fuck…
Could I actually forgive her?
You're getting way ahead of yourself, Ethan…
I pinch the bridge of my nose before downing the rest of my drink. When I look back up, those glittering, ocean blue eyes are locked on me.
And fuck me… I can't stop myself.
I slowly start to walk towards her, a strange magnetism igniting my nerves as butterflies bloom in my chest.
Tate…
What will I say first? Should I hug her? No, you creep. I'll shake her hand. Are you for real? Hell, why am I so nervous? Breathe. Just say hi. And go from there. It's that simple. It's that…
But as I look up, I realize that things aren't that simple. Between Tatum and me? It would never be simple again.
Not with him around.
My eyes catch a glimpse of why she's here, rather whom she's here to see, and a sudden surge of anger erupts in my veins, my hands balling into fists.
Without sparing a second further, I turn on my heel, and walk towards the exit.
I'm not the fool this time. I refuse to be the fool. I'm not doing this again. God, how could I be so stupid? It was just one look from her and I…
I quickly dig out my phone, hitting the send button to redial the last message I sent. To her.
She answers on the first ring.
"Hey, Harper," I nonchalantly adjust my jeans. "Can we… meet somewhere else?"
----------
Tatum
"Hey, baby."
Tobias's mouth grazes my lips once, then twice, but my eyes remain trained on Ethan's back as he heads for the exit, leaving Donahue's.
And me. Again.
"Tatum? Earth to Tatum," he chuckles, waving his hand in front of my eyes, breaking my reverie. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah." I blink back my unshed tears and force a smile. "I'm sorry, hey," I lace my arms around his neck, planting another kiss on his mouth in hopes he wouldn't notice my distraction. "How was your morning?"
Tobias runs his hand down his face in frustration. "Let's just say I'm glad to be here with you."
"Me too," I slip my hand into his. "Thank you… for inviting me out to lunch so we can, you know, spend some time together."
"Of course, baby," his expression grows serious as he tightens his grip around my fingers. "I know," he sighs, covering up our hands with his other palm. "I know I've been a jackass to you. And I'm… I'm really sorry, Tate. I’m not exactly used to this, let alone being in a relationship.” He sighs.  “Life is just… changing, you know? So fast."
I playfully scoff into a smirk. "Tell me something I don't already know."  Tobias wiggles his eyebrows, acknowledging that I have him beat when it comes to life changes–not that it's a competition. This was definitely not one I was hoping to win.
He grows somber, turning his gaze away from me. "You deserve better from me. I know that," his voice grows softer, "I've always known that."
"Tob," but… I don't know what else to say. Would my life be easier without him? Yes. Would my life be better without him? I… don't know.
It doesn't matter now.
I exhale slowly. "Do you… ever think that maybe we got a little ahead of ourselves?"
"No." He furrows his eyebrows, his thumb fidgeting with my ring as we fall into an awkward silence. "No," he says more assuredly, "I would do it again in a heartbeat."
And suddenly, a frigid chill wraps around me, guilt hitting me like a pit in my stomach. He would do it again in a heartbeat? Really?
Because me? I don't think I would.
He clears his throat, squeezing my fingers endearingly. "You know I love you, right?"
I slowly nod, the corner of my mouth curling into a crooked grin. He really is making an effort, more than what he has been doing since we moved to Boston. I should be happy that he's even trying to make a relationship work between us.
I look down at his large hands, and nod as a single tear falls free, sloping down my nose. He's trying, Tatum. He's not Ethan, but he's trying his best.
It's going to have to be enough.
"And I love you, too, my little princess," Tobias croons as he lays his hands on my pregnant belly, hidden under the table. The one thing that has tugged on my heart strings through all of this is watching this former playboy become a father. He’s really starting to come around.  "Has she been moving around this morning?"
I nod, smiling at the thought of our growing daughter, kicking and doing somersaults. Maybe she'll be a gymnast someday, or even a dancer with these moves…
We're already halfway there and yet, my mind can't seem to wrap around the idea that what I'm feeling, what is developing and moving inside me is an actual human baby. According to one of my baby books, she's now about the size of an artichoke. I honestly don't know how big an artichoke is, but judging by the sudden shift of my stomach in the past two weeks and having absolutely no pants that fit me anymore, that is one humongous artichoke.
Tobias and I have made some mistakes and questionable life decisions in the past six months, but this little girl, the small flutters she gives me daily gives me an unexplainable joy, a hope that something beautiful can still be born from darkness.
It has to.
We grab a quick bite, satisfying my craving for all things cheesy and dipped in ranch dressing before preparing to head out for the afternoon.  Tobias thoughtfully helps me stand from the table, giving my tummy another tender caress before placing a kiss on my cheek. I'm still fairly independent; even though I already feel quite large, I haven't quite reached the stage of needing assistance.
But I don't tell Tobias this. I actually think telling him would hurt him. He's terrified and unsure about a lot right now, but one thing he's becoming very good at is protecting me. The rest will come with time and maturity. I just need to keep reminding myself: he is trying.
"Ready for this 20-week anatomy scan?"
He also comes to all of my appointments now.  He's going to be a father.
I chuckle, unable to contain my excitement. I gently glide my fingers across the expanse of my belly before cradling it. "I can't wait to hear that beautiful heartbeat."
"Me, too." He kisses me before lacing his fingers with mine to leave the bar.
And maybe this is a lesson motherhood is teaching me: having a good day doesn't mean everything has to be perfect; rather it's me changing my outlook in seeing the potential of what's to come.
I miss Ethan. Terribly. And I might always love him.
But I have a man right here by my side who is vowing to fight to change who he is to be the man I need him to be, and that our daughter needs him to be. Because he loves me.  And maybe someday, I will love him, too.
I might not see the whole picture just yet, but I have to believe something beautiful will come out of this.
I had a feeling about today; it's going to be a good day.
Right?

Adelaide's Birthday
Series: Open Heart Paring: Tobias Carrick x F!OC (Adelaide Barnes) Word Count: 1236 Summary: It's Adelaide's birthday A/n: Yes today was Adelaide's birthday and I did forget about it until this week and I didn't have any time to write until today so it's most likely very bad as I wrote it in two hours without checking it for errors. Anyways, enjoy.
Tumblr media
Both Tobias and Adelaide always slept in whenever they could, which means that they usually woke up together each morning. So when Adelaide woke up to the other side of the bed empty, she knew something was up. She quickly threw on one of Tobias’ long sleeve dress shirts and went to go find him.
Waiting outside the door of the bedroom was Luna. She was laying down and wagging her tail as she waited for Adelaide to come out of the bedroom. When she opened the door, Luna perked up and started painting, waiting to be pet, which made Adelaide laugh.
“What? Do you want some scratches?” Adelaide said in a higher pitched voice.
She knelt down to pet Luna for a few minutes before standing back up to go find Tobias, Luna following right behind her. She decided to go into the kitchen to find him first and was right as Tobias was over at the stove flipping different foods in multiple pans.
She stood at the entrance of the kitchen and cleared her throat, which made Tobias turn to face her. The two of them smiled and Tobias turned towards her with his arms out. Adelaide quickly walked towards him and they wrapped their arms around each other before he lifted her off of the ground and she wrapped her legs around him. She then took her hands and placed them on the sides of Tobias’ face and kissed him hard, making Luna bark.
“Good morning.” Tobias said.
“Good morning. Whatcha doing?”
“Well I am trying to make the birthday girl breakfast.”
“Well don’t let me stop you.” Adelaide said as she got down and went to get a glass of water before sitting down at the island watching Tobias finish making breakfast.
Once he was done, Tobias plated food for the both of them and brought it over to Adelaide. The two of them smiled at each other before leaning in for a kiss. Tobias brought his hand under her chin and deepened the kiss before breaking away and turning towards the food to eat.
A little while after everything from breakfast was cleaned up, Adelaide and Tobias cuddled on the couch and watched tv. Tobias had a hand in her hair, twirling it around in his fingers. Both of them were very comfortable on the couch when there was a knock at the door. Both of them sat up and Adelaide went to open the door.
“Surprise.” Both Claire and Ethan said, holding up some bags in their hands.
“Hi! What are you guys doing here?”
Claire tilted her head and gave Adelaide a playful glare. “Did you really think that I wouldn’t be with you on your birthday?”
The two of them hugged before Adelaide hugged Ethan and Tobias hugged Claire. Then both Claire and Adelaide looked at the two men, who both huffed and then hugged each other, while the two women laughed.
“Anyways. We have a surprise for you!” Claire said.
Claire handed Adelaide one of the bags in her hand before setting the other bags down next to them. She looked inside to see a green shirt and skirt, as well as high heeled boots with a bunch of silver and multiple shades of green gems on them. She then looked up and saw Claire holding an envelope, which she took and opened to see four tickets to see Six: The Musical on Broadway.
“Wait really?” Adelaide said smiling.
“Yeah. We figured it would be something special for your birthday.” Ethan chimed in.
“Well thank you.”
“You’re welcome, but since it’s for tonight we should get going. We also booked hotels for the weekend so we should check in and get ready before we have to be there.” Claire said, handing the other bag she had been holding to Tobias.
“That’s why you were packing our bags.” Adelaide said to Tobias who just smiled.
The four of them made their way down to NYC in their separate cars. Both Adelaide and Claire had started doing their makeup on the ride there. Both couples then checked into their hotel rooms and finished getting ready. Adelaide was doing some finishing touches when Tobias came out of the bathroom, dressed in a teal shirt and black jeans that had some teal detailing, as well as black boots that had silver and different shades of teal gems on them.
“Ooh. I see someone is supposed to be a teal alternate.” Adelaide said, turning towards Tobias as she finished fixing her space buns.
“Yeah, I figured that this was the best one other than orange.”
“Well I love it”
The two of them shared a quick kiss before making their way down to the lobby. When the elevator opened, they were greeted by Claire who was wearing a dark blue shirt and pants and wearing the same boots as Adelaide but the green jewels were switched for blue, as well as Ethan who was dressed very similarly to Tobias but he was wearing orange instead of teal.
“Ooh, I like both the Catherine Parr and Orange Alternate looks.”
“Thank you. I tried to get Ethan to wear either the Pink alternate colors or the Katherine Howard colors but he refused.” Claire said before turning to Ethan.
“Hey, I was willing to do this but I cross the line at wearing pink.”
“That’s fine with me. I’m just so excited to see the show.
“You’ve seen it about 20 times already.” Tobias said.
“Yeah but each time is different like when different people are on or it’s a special show like someone’s final show or it’s close to the holidays.”
The four of them continued to chat in the lobby before heading over to the theater and getting their seats, which were in the first row.
“See another new thing. I haven’t sat in the first row before.” Adelaide said to Tobias, who just rolled his eyes and laughed.
“Yes dear.”
It wasn’t long before the show had started and the four of them had fun. During the megasix both actors playing Catherine of Aragon and Jane Seymour had pointed their mics towards Adelaide and motioned for her to sing the parts. After the show was over she got signatures and photos with the cast, who all wished her a happy birthday.
Once she was done, the four of them headed back to the hotel and Adelaide and Tobias said goodnight to Claire and Ethan before heading to their hotel room. Once they were inside, Adelaide immediately went to take off her shoes and take down her hair.
“Sweet Relief.”
Tobias had laughed at what Adelaide had said and went to help Adelaide with her hair and her makeup before getting ready for bed himself. Once the two of them were ready, they climbed into bed and turned off the lights.
“So did you like what we had planned for today.”
“I did but when did you plan all of this?”
“I did it when I was on break. I also had some help from friends from high school when it comes to the outfits but I had Ethan and Claire hold onto them so you couldn’t accidentally find them.”
“Oh. Well thank you. I loved it.”
“Your welcome angel.”
The two of them shared a kiss before settling into bed. The two of them fell asleep quickly as their tiredness overcame them.

Karma is a... Barbie Premiere (2/2)
Tumblr media
In part two, we learn a little more about Dr. Eva Mendoza, (a new OC in my Tobias & Casey world. An Introduction), and find out about her and Etahn's rocky start. Now that Tobias & Casey have them calling a truce, what does the future hold? 💄💗💋
I changed this a little because I'm going to see Barbie tomorrow. I didn't feel right commenting on the movie prior to seeing it. But, if I feel it's helpful to the story, I'll write a drabble about the conversation the four of them have over drinks after. :)
Karma is a Barbie Premier - Part 1
Book: Open Heart (Post Series) Pairings: Tobias Carrick x F!MC (Casey) Ethan Ramsey x F!OC (Eva) - Maybe? Rating: Teen Words: 2,300

Karma is a Barbie Premier - Part 1
A few days later at work.
The morning was busier than usual at Edenbrook, something most appreciated. Being busy was better than being idle. It made the day go faster, and lunchtime arrived before they knew it. The diagnostic team members on duty headed to the office for a working lunch.
After discussing current cases and determining a few new ones to bring in, they had fifteen minutes to spare. Tobias threw his feet on the desk with a yawn, and Casey rushed to put her food in the microwave, but Ethan started for the door.
“Woah, woah, woah!” Tobias called after him. “Where are you going?”
“It’s a hospital, Tobias. I’m going back to work.”
“Not for fifteen minutes, you’re not. Sit down and eat... and don’t tell me you had a smoothie. That doesn’t count as lunch.”
“It does if it contains spinach.”
“Ethan,” Tobias said, putting half his pot roast on a plate for Ethan. “You really need to live a little.”
Ethan turned to Casey for support, but she just shrugged.
“Don’t look at me. I agree. Take a few minutes to eat.”
Ethan sat down with a heavy sigh and started shoveling the delicious food into his mouth. Tobias and Casey had the right idea, though he wasn’t going to admit it.
“See,” Tobias teased, seeing the smile on his friend’s face. “This is why I’m here... to make sure you enjoy life a little.”
“Oh, that’s your reason for existence?” Ethan shot back. “Not your wife, your daughter, not even your career, but to be a persistent pain in my ass.”
“Hey, the others may be more important, but the last one has longevity. I’m not letting it go.”
“Oy, boy...” Ethan grumbled, noticing Casey had stopped eating. “Hey, are you done?” He asked.
“Sure am. Want the rest of mine?”
“If you’re not going to eat it...” he said, pulling her plate in his direction.
“It’s almost as good as a spinach smoothie,” Tobias chuckled.
“Fine!” He surrendered. “I’ll give you this one... just this one.”
“See!” Tobias boasted. “You need to listen to me more often!”
“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”
Casey laughed, watching the two world-class doctors squabbling like little boys. “I’m with Tobias,” she grinned. “You do need to have more fun. I’m glad you’re going to the Barbie premiere with us.”
“Yeah, about that...” Ethan started.
“Screw you, Ramsey. Don’t even try to weasel out of it!”
“But, Barbie...”Ethan whined.
“I think you’ll be surprised, Ethan,” Casey offered. “From what I’ve read, it’s going to be a lot more meaningful than you’d think. Regardless, it’s a big premiere, and we’ll have fun!”
“Fine! Who else is coming? Trinh?”
Casey shot a look at Tobias. “You haven’t told him?”
“Told him what?” Ethan groaned.
“Hadn’t gotten around to it yet, baby.”
Casey rolled her eyes. “OK, before I tell you... this is in no way, shape, or form a setup...”
“Oh, God...”
“The day Tobias asked you, I had already asked Eva, and...”
“OK. No. Forget it.”
“Ethan!” Casey scolded. “Why not? You two are so weird. You sure looked cozy at our wedding, but since then...” she shook her head. “Ethan, she’s a colleague and our friend. All you have to do is be polite. It’s not a date!”
“Well,” Tobias simpered. “In fairness, it’s our date night.”
“Our date night, Tobias! Not theirs!”
“Does she know I’m going?” Ethan asked.
“Yes, she wasn’t overly enthusiastic either, but she didn’t try to back out! Now... put your big boy pants on because you’re going to see Barbie!”
Ethan shot a look at Casey. “Please repeat that sentence, and you’ll see how wrong it sounded.”
Casey looked at her watch with a sigh. “I have a consult in five. You two babysit yourselves. And Ethan, make sure you wear something pink to the premiere.”
“I am not wearing pink!” He hollered after her as Tobias spooned the last of his pot roast into his mouth with a smirk.
“Oh, you’re wearing pink!”
~~~~~
The day of the premiere arrived, and Casey bounced around with the excitement of a child. Tobias slipped his pink sweater over his head as she entered the room. A slow whistle escaped him as he took her in from her fuschia high heels that perfectly matched her flouncy tutu to the pink and black floral corset that had him forgetting they were expected anywhere.
“Damn, baby. You know, we don’t have to go. Mom’s watching Sammy, and we could have a perfectly enjoyable night right here.”
“I’m sure we could,” she giggled. “But have you forgotten our friends are coming along, too?”
“No, watching them may be more entertaining than the movie.”
“It’s possible.”
“Hey,” he said as they headed to the car. “When we get there, let’s rush to our seats so they have to sit next to each other.”
“You’re terrible,” Casey laughed.
“All part of my charm, hon. All part of my charm.”
They picked up Eva first.
“You look amazing!” Eva beamed as she slid into the back of the car.
“Thank you!” Tobias replied enthusiastically.
“Not you, jackass. Your wife!”
“Yeah,” he smiled, taking Casey’s hand. “She looks hot as hell.”
“I didn’t say she... you know... never mind.”
“You look beautiful, too. Eva,” Casey laughed.
“Not as festive as you,” she replied. “But I managed to find a pink tank top to wear.”
“Hey, that’s all that matters!”
“Speaking of pink,” Tobias said as they pulled in front of Ethan’s. “Ethan better be wearing pink. I’ve told him a half dozen times....” his voice trailed as Ethan came into view, wearing a long-sleeved grey t-shirt, jeans, and a bit of a scowl.
“You were saying?” Eva grinned.
“That fucker isn’t wearing pink!”
“Hello, everyone.” Ethan nodded as he entered the car.
“You’re not wearing pink!” Tobias admonished. “How many times did I tell you... wear pink?”
“And how many times did I tell you... no?”
“Ethan, you’re such a party pooper,” Casey sighed.
“And you’re...” he stalled, looking over Casey’s ensemble. “...Barbie.”
“Which is fitting... since we’re going to a Barbie premiere!” Tobias groused.
“Children,” Eva scolded. “Behave, or no one gets dessert after dinner.”
“Oh, I’m getting dessert,” Tobias snickered. “Trust me...”
“Oh, for God’s sake,” Ethan grumbled.
“What?” Eva laughed. “I think they’re kind of cute.”
“It may have been cute in high school. I’d even say in college if they had a few drinks in them. But at their age... It’s not cute anymore.”
“You’re right,” Eva replied. “It’s adorable.”
Tobias caught Ethan’s eyes in the rearview mirror. “Looks like you’re outnumbered, Pal.”
“What else is new?”
The conversation lagged, and every attempt at small talk faltered too quickly, usually with Ethan or Eva disagreeing with one another or locking horns. Tobias mouthed, “Music?” to Casey, but she couldn’t ignore the eight-hundred-pound gorilla in the room.
“So,” she stated. “What’s the deal with you two? Eva, I know you and Tobias had some beef back in Kenmore, but you’re nice to each other now. This begs one question. What did Ethan do?”
“Hey!” Ethan jumped in. “Why do you assume it was me?”
“Because it was,” Eva deadpanned.
“That’s not true! We didn’t meet under the best of circumstances, but I have apologized.”
“It was new intern day, wasn’t it?” Casey asked.
“How’d you guess?” Eva replied.
“Because that’s probably the worst day to ever meet Ethan.”
Ethan hit Tobias’s shoulder. “Aren’t you going to defend me?”
“Ow!” Tobias frowned. “I was planning on... if they said anything inaccurate, which they haven’t. But you broke the pink rule, and now you’re assaulting me. Sorry, I’m on their side!”
“Yes!” Casey cheered. “Now, Eva, what did he do?”
“It all started when I got a page. Someone needed an interpreter....”
“You’re not really going to share this, are you?” Ethan protested.
“Oh, this has to be good,” Tobias goaded. “Spill, Eva, and drinks are on me tonight.”
“Drinks are already on you,” Eva retorted. “But...”
As Casey and Tobias waited with bated breath, Eva noticed the pained look in Ethan’s eyes, and she decided to refrain.
“You know what, it doesn’t matter. It’s old news.”
Tobias’s face fell in disappointment. “I am so not buying drinks!”
“It was a shitty day,” Ethan started. “ I was... less than cheerful.”
“Read: you were being a jerk,” Tobias smiled.
“BINGO!” Eva replied.
“Anyway...” Ethan continued. “I had a very difficult patient who insisted they didn’t need an interpreter, but they didn’t speak any of the four languages I do...”
“Ethan,” Eva whispered, gently touching his arm. “You don’t have to.”
“No,” he replied. “I want to. These are my friends, and I’ve apologized to you, but perhaps I haven’t done it well enough, and I’d like the chance to do it again.”
“Guys, we’re just playing around. You don’t have to...” Casey started, but Ethan interrupted.
“I do. I had this total PITA patient. Their blood pressure was dropping, and I couldn’t get any medical history from them. Throw in it was new intern day. Several kept buzzing in and out for one ridiculous reason or another, completely grating my nerves. So, I called the nurses’ desk and asked them to find a Greek interpreter on staff. They sent someone who spoke Bulgarian. How does that help? So, I called again, and they sent someone who spoke Turkish. The patient is sicker by the moment, and I’m about to lose my mind when Eva walks in.”
“Now, it was my first day at Edenbrook, too... and Ethan assumed I was an intern.”
“Oh, no...” Casey groaned.
“I walked in, all eager to help. I said, ‘Hello, I’m Dr. Eva Mendoza. I hear you need an interpreter.’”
“And I turned around and said... “Those damn idiots can’t get a thing right. I need a Greek translator! I’m going to have those imbeciles fired!”
“I’m trying to explain I’m fluent in Greek, but I can’t get a word in...”
“So I tell her, I speak Spanish. I don’t need a Spanish interpreter, an intern much less, and you can go.”
“Oh, Jesus...” Tobias moaned.
“I stepped around him and started talking to the patient in Greek. Ethan looked like a deer in the headlights... after it got hit.”
“That’s a pretty good assessment of how I felt.”
“After we stabilized the patient, we went outside, and Ethan tried to apologize. But I wasn’t having it.”
“Rightfully so. She gave me a huge piece of her mind.”
“I informed him I wasn’t an intern, but a fellow... and assuming I could only speak Spanish because of my name was a bias and unacceptable. I’m half Greek, and I happen to speak four languages.”
“She didn’t say it quite so politely,” Ethan chuckled.
“Good!” Casey countered.
“I apologized profusely, but she turned on her heel, and I’m pretty sure steam was coming out of her ears.”
“An accurate depiction,” Eva corroborated. “But as much as I thought you were an utter idiot that day, you have apologized several times.”
“But you still think badly of me, and whenever I feel like I’ve knocked down a piece of the wall you built around me, you quickly build it back up again. I don’t get a second chance at a first impression, but I hope you’ll let me start fresh. It was a bad day, and I acted out of character. But I’m not that guy. The sad thing is, we’re surrounded by people who are... that guy... but they aren’t as hot-headed as me, and you’ll never see it. They don’t lose sleep over messing up like I did.”
“You lost sleep?” Eva asked.
“I have. So, it might be asking too much, but can we start fresh? If you don’t want to, I’ll leave right now. I won’t ruin the night for you. But I’d really like a second chance.”
“Ethan,” Eva sighed. “You don’t get out of seeing Barbie that easily. And if I were to ask you to go home, it would be because you broke the pink rule. If I’m wearing pink, you should be wearing pink! But thank you for the explanation and your umpteenth apology. I’m sorry for choosing to see the worst in you, even though you have shown other sides. I can be stubborn as the day is long, and that’s on me.”
“So,” she said, extending her hand. “I’m Dr. Eva Mendoza, and you are?”
“I’m Dr. Ethan Ramsey,” he smiled. “And it’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“This is like the end of a Hallmark movie,” Tobias joked from the front.
“Honey, you’ve obviously never seen a Hallmark movie,” Casey laughed. “So, are we all friends now?” Now, are we all friends?”
“Yeah,” Ethan smiled. “We’re friends.”
“Good!” Tobias smiled. “And Ethan, your face is so flushed. You kind of do have pink on now.”
“Oh, but that’s not nearly good enough,” Eva laughed. “Tobias, stop the car!”
“Why?”
“I need to stop at that street vendor. That pink boa would perfectly compliment Ethan’s outfit.”
“Yes!” Casey clapped as Tobias pulled over.
“No, oh no!” Ethan yelled.
“You could have just worn the pink polo shirt I gave you, bro. This is all on you.”
Giggling like a schoolgirl, Eva returned to the car with the pink boa, gleefully handing it to Ethan.
“If I wear this, am I 100% forgiven?”
“Yep,” Eva smiled. “Unless you do something stupid again.”
“Oh, good,” Tobias chuckled, pulling up to the valet. “We should have at least fifteen minutes before he does that.”
“OK, this ride has been nice but way too serious. Can we walk the red carpet and get our Barbie on?”
“Yes, dear,” Tobias smiled.
“You really are a whole new Tobias, aren’t you?” Eva said in wonderment. “Speaking of that,” Ethan said as he shut the car door behind him. “What was this beef you had with Carrick at Kenmore? You and I may have more in common than I initially thought.”
Tumblr media
It was a terrifically normal day at the hospital for Tobias Carrick.
He checked in on all of his patients, signed their charts, ran some tests, continued research on their latest case, and went out to Derry’s Roasters with Ethan during lunch break because that was the only place that he could drag his best friend without him complaining.
A perfectly, utterly normal working day.
Except for the small, minor, teeny-tiny fact that he has not been able to stop thinking about Nyla since their first meeting.
Perhaps it was the way she caught his attention, reeling him into the depths of her warm caramel irises. Perhaps it was the way that they touched; her soft hand meeting his own, firm yet delicate at the same time. Perhaps it was the way she spoke to him, her feathery light voice effortlessly putting a hazy spell on him.
Or perhaps it was the way that she crushed his ego and undermined his ability as a doctor and a leader to his old team in just a few sentences.
Christ, this was pathetic.
Even for him.
Releasing a weighted sigh, Tobias shut down his laptop and closed his navy blue notebook. Her exact words, undoubtedly stitched with anger and disappointment, echoed inside his tangled thoughts. Shoulders slouching forward, he took a moment to close his eyes—savoring every last drop of tranquility within these four walls that he could get.
Still, he could not get her voice out of his head.
Her gentle voice, her airy voice. Brittle, as cold as the first ice of winter. Ringing in the distance, haunting him—or, more accurately, taunting him. There was a hint of calmness in her tone, a collective tune of harmonious silver bells that lullabied him to a state of serenity. The sound eerily came closer, and closer.
And closer.
Closer.
Shit.
She’s here, isn’t she?
His eyelids slowly opened themselves, partially afraid of the ghost that had been lingering in his mind might make her appearance. There was no use in it, though, because she was already there, only meters away. Outside of the Diagnostics Team’s office, breathtaking in every possible way.
The sparkle in her hazel eyes brought light and ease into his heart. Her rosy cheeks glowed, enthusiastically responding to her conversation with Edenbrook’s own sunshine, Marchia. Each step led them closer to the glass entrance—and before he could anticipate it—they entered the room.
Tobias shifted his sight to the papers in front of him, hoping that Nyla did not saw him gaping like a goldfish.
“Okay, I have a short meeting in five minutes. You stay here, and we’ll continue after this,” the blonde announced, giving her friend a quick embrace.
Marchia’s heels clacked across the floor, and within seconds, there was only two of them. Left behind in a quiet, atrociously deafening silence. A silence that grew bigger, thicker, as moments passed by.
Maybe this was his chance to redeem himself in front of her.
“So, welcome to our humble abode.”
There was a slight pause before she could reply. Nyla stood in front of their sofa, arms clutching tightly above her chest, looking in his direction. The subtle white jumpsuit that embraced every dip and curve on her figure made it almost impossible to focus on anything else than her absolute beauty, magnificent in all of its glory.
“Not so humble, I would say, considering that it’s owned by Leland and he always try to show it off in every occasion he could get.”
“Hrm,” he lightly scoffed, agreeing with her keen observation. “I guess that’s true.”
An awkward silence had once again taken their conversation hostage.
Tobias rose to his feet, leaving the comfortable chair, and slowly walked closer—much to her surprise. He fought long and hard to formulate the exact right words, the perfect expression to express his feelings, in order to reset all of this mess.
He knew he had to take a leap.
“Look, Nyla, I think we got off on the wrong foot,” he murmured, locking eyes with her. “Sure, I wasn’t the best and I made some mistakes—”
“Whoa, whoa. Hold on. You weren’t being,” Nyla paused for a beat, then raised both of her hands, motioning air quotes as she continued with, “‘The best’?”
His dark brown brows pulled together at the questionable gesture.
For a room that was only filled with two people, the air felt entirely thick and suffocating. He found himself drowning, struggling to get a sentence out of his mouth.
“You abandoned your team, Carrick. You left them when they need you the most. Edenbrook wasn’t the only hospital that had been shook to the core with the whole shift and merger. MK got their hit too, or did you forgot about that?”
“I didn’t forget about that. But—”
“Not to mention your whole childish competition with Doctor Ramsey. And for what? It almost cost us a great doctor. A wonderful friend of mine.”
Tension soared as she mentioned the tragic incident that latched within these great halls. What happened was horrible, devastating—not a day goes by without Tobias feeling guilty and wishing he had done things differently back then.
“I’m sorry, I really am, but it wasn’t entirely my fault,” he sighed.
“Oh, please,” she rolled her eyes, lips curled up in disdain. “Just like how we failed to be in the top ten rankings wasn’t your fault too.”
Anger boiled inside his veins as he digested the true meaning of her words. He was no Ethan Ramsey, nor was he the Leonardo da Vinci of medicine—he was certain about that. But he had more than ten years of experience under his belt, dozens of unique and unthinkable cases, and even synthesized a goddamn cure for a lethal bio-toxin.
Surely he deserved some respect.
“You come in here like you’re some saint, Doctor Hassan. Apparently being a mediocre attending at Mayo Clinic does that to you, huh?” he snickered, harshness palpable in his voice.
Nyla snorted. “Watch where you’re going with this, Carrick.”
“Judge all you want, but you know nothing about me. You know nothing about the vicious medical industry. Nothing. You’re just some new kid on the block. Get some real experiences out there, and then we’ll talk, kiddo.”
Her orbs burned with fire he had never seen before in his life. She inched closer, tilting her head upwards, their breaths interwove in the small space between them. Emotions rumbled inside their chests, waiting to explode at any moment.
Biting her tongue, she replied, “Underestimate me again and we’ll see how well that goes for you.”
“Can’t wait,” Tobias whispered, hot air brushing the shell of her ear.
Fuming with vexation, the young doctor turned her body and headed straight for the door. A melody of heavy thump that accompanied every step she took became music to his ears—a clear sign that he had won this battle. Wearing a complacent expression, he relished in the victorious feeling.
If she wanted war, then she had come to the right place.
Because Tobias was certainly not giving up without a fight.
Harmony of Hearts
Pairings: Bryce x Olivia, Ethan x Merida (@lilyoffandoms), Tobias x Casey (@jerzwriter) Book: Open Heart Word Count:>800 Rating/Warnings: general (only warning is bad song writing, I'm not a song writer 🤷‍♀️)
Synopsis: Tobias, Ethan, and Bryce surprise the ladies with a song they wrote for them.
Tumblr media
"Not so fast, Ramsey–" Tobias's arm shot out in front of the head of diagnostics, blocking his path to the door.
"We all agreed to this," Bryce added, folding his arms as he leaned against the wall, a playful smirk playing on his features. "For what it's worth, I think you sound good."
The blue-eyed doctor's brows narrowed, and his lips pulled into a frown, although the corner of his lips betrayed the sentiment. "It's not too late to book a spa weekend."
"You know this will mean more. And, isn't today about celebrating them?" Tobias turned Ethan back toward the living room. Bryce followed closely behind as Tobias led the way, keeping Ethan trapped between them.
The guys gathered together, each holding a worn piece of paper as they stood in front of the couch where the girls had gathered. Their light-hearted conversation quieted as their attention curiously shifted.
"It was your idea, Lahela—" Tobias nudged him forward. "Would you like to do the honors?
Warmly, Bryce stepped closer, his eyes filled with warm affection for his wife and their friends. "Today is not just any day—it's a day dedicated to celebrating the strength, grace, and brilliance of women around the world, but we couldn't let it pass without expressing our love for the incredible women in our lives."
Ethan's stoic expression softened to offer a nod of agreement with his colleague's words.
Bryce continued, picking up the ukulele that had been lying on the coffee table. "So, we've prepared a little something for you."
"It might not be Grammy-worthy," Ethan added, attempting to lower any expectations. "Songwriting wasn't covered at Hopkins."
Tobias couldn't resist a teasing grin, his eyes sparkling as he glanced at Casey. "Don't expect Taylor Swift-level lyric writing or an Era's tour performance. No outfit changes here! We're more like... 'shower karaoke on a Tuesday' level."
Casey shot Tobias a playful smirk, crossing her arms as she relaxed on the comfy couch. "Well, if it's shower karaoke on a Tuesday, then I expect nothing less than a chart-topping hit."
Bryce skillfully strummed the ukulele strings, each note resonating with a gentle warmth, the instrument itself echoing the affection he felt for Olivia. He nodded to Tobias, signaling he was up.
With a confident grin, Tobias cleared his throat, placing his paper on the end table. He knew the words well enough. His voice, smooth and melodic, filled the room:
 "In a world of puzzles and diagnostic charts,
Casey, you're the melodic beat in my heart.
With your brilliance and laughter, you light up the day,
Here's a little song to say, 'I love you' in my own way."🎶
Casey's eyes sparkled with delight. She had always loved his voice when he sang along to songs they loved, but to have him write this for her—it was something altogether different, something she couldn't believe how much she needed (and now wanted more)
Ethan was next. He carefully adjusted his tie before stepping forward. The world-renowned physician wasn't used to such nerves. His fingers trembled slightly, holding the paper tightly in his hands. His gaze flickered between it and Merida.
🎶 "Merida, my love, you were once a mystery to me,
But in your eyes, now, all the answers I see.
Your brilliance and grace cannot be denied
My love for you, I could never hide."🎶
Merida, usually composed, had a soft smile drawing on her lips. She reached for Ethan's hand, squeezing in gratitude. "I love you," she mouthed the words quietly. His thumb brushed over her fingers.
Bryce looked at Olivia, his warmed with affection for her. His gentle touch on the ukulele continued:
🎶 "Olivia, my partner in this life's beautiful dance,
In the realm of hearts, you're my favorite chance.
With a scalpel in my hand, and every healing word,
It's our symphony of love, forever to be heard." 🎶
Olivia's eyes misted at the beautiful song. Her hands clasped over her heart as she marveled at the men and their song as they continued:
🎶 "Hand in hand, through thick and thin,
Together we stand, let the melody begin.
For the women we cherish, our hearts take flight,
In the symphony of life, you're our greatest delight.
To Casey, Merida, and Olivia so dear,
With love, laughter, and the occasional tear.
With this song for you, our voices combine,
Forever grateful, forever thine." 🎶
The simple melody filled the room and the hearts of the girls. Olivia, Casey, and Merida exchanged surprised glances. Their initial amusement at the idea of them writing a song turned into genuine appreciation.
"Never again," Ethan grumbled to Tobias.
"We'll see about that," he offered with a wink. "Thursday's Karaoke night—I already signed us up!"
Their conversation was cut short as Casey, Merida, and Olivia showered them with praise, offering each their own affections of gratitude for the thoughtful gesture and the words of admiration they'd forever hold dear.
