Thunderous Stomp (Dragon/Electric)
My take on a possible ancient paradox RAIKOU based on Walking Wake, the ancient paradox SUICUNE released yesterday
Thunderous Stomp is based on Titanosauridae, mostly because I remembered Brontosaurus means "Thunder Lizard" and my brain made the automatic connection

Udelartitan celeste Soto et al., 2024 (new genus and species)
Tumblr media
(Type tail vertebrae of Udelartitan celeste, from Soto et al., 2024)
Meaning of name: Udelartitan = UdelaR [acronym for the Universidad de la República] titan [in Greek]; celeste = sky blue [in Spanish, referring to the nickname of Uruguayan teams in international sport competitions]
Age: Late Cretaceous (exact age uncertain)
Where found: Guichón Formation, Paysandú, Uruguay
How much is known: Multiple tail vertebrae and some limb bones. It is unknown how many of these bones belonged to the same individuals.
Notes: Udelartitan was a titanosaurian sauropod and one of the few Mesozoic dinosaurs known from Uruguay. Most known specimens of Udelartitan had been briefly described in 2012, but were left unnamed at the time. It may have been closely related to Alamosaurus from the southwestern United States, Baurutitan from Brazil, and Pellegrinisaurus from Argentina, with which it shares the feature of having a frontmost tail vertebra that is convex on both ends.

A dinosaur tooth of an indeterminate titanosaurian sauropod, possibly from the Allen Formation in Patagonia, Argentina. These teeth were previously dumped into the invalid Saltasaurus robustus, but many titanosaurs like Bonatitan and Rocasaurus have since been described from the region. This tooth previously had some restoration at the very tip which was removed.

Here's the second part of my Evolved Dinosaurs series, this one featuring Titanosaurs.  I originally wanted to draw more of them but it was pretty time consuming and I wanted to move on to the next part.  Hopefully the composition is passable. Anyway, the scene is a herd of Titanosaurs gathering at their breeding ground where two males are battling for center stage while females look on.  This particular species hails from South American where vertically all of the largest known Titanosaurs were discovered.  Given how efficient they were at getting big, after 65 million years I imagine they would have finally recached the biological limit of terrestrial size, reaching up to 50m in total length and raising their heads reaching to 20m.  A contributing factor the their size increase is the joining of the northern and southern American continents which greatly expanding their territory.  When it's spring in the northern hemisphere they migrate to North America then back to South America when spring returns there. They regulate their body temperature with their neck flaps similar to how elephants use their ears for the same function.  In males, these neck flaps can expand and exhibit bright colors to attract females as well as intimidate potential rivals.  When combating other males, they would often expand their neck flaps and risk injury as a show of confidence. As always comments and critiques are welcome.
Note: the males are distinguished from the females by the bright red patterns on their throats and darker back stripes.

Wordplay Wednesday: Titanosauriform
Paleontologists (and honestly, biologists) love to use big words to name groups of animals. One of the words you've probably seen me use is titanosauriform. What does it mean?
Tumblr media
Titanosauriforms are a clade of sauropods within the larger clade Macronaria. When form is tagged onto the end of a group it means that it includes the named group (in this case titanosauria) and their immediate relatives.
Tumblr media
So whenever I use the term "titanosauriform" I'm simply saying it's related to titanosaurs.

Titanomachya gimenezi Pérez-Moreno et al., 2024 (new genus and species)
Tumblr media
(Humerus [upper arm bone] of Titanomachya gimenezi [scale bar = 10 cm], from Pérez-Moreno et al., 2024)
Meaning of name: Titanomachya = for the Titanomachy [war between Olympians and Titans in Greek mythology]; gimenezi = for Olga Giménez [Argentinian paleontologist]
Age: Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian)
Where found: La Colonia Formation, Chubut, Argentina
How much is known: Partial skeleton of one individual including several limb bones and an incomplete tail vertebra.
Notes: Titanomachya was a titanosaurian sauropod. Titanosaurs included the largest known land animals of all time, and many species are thought to have weighed well over 10 tons. Titanomachya was not so large by comparison, estimated as having weighed between 5.8–9.8 tons. However, it appears to have been more massive than some other relatively small South American titanosaurs like Saltasaurus and Neuquensaurus, which it appears to have been closely related to.
Titanomachya had a distinctive structure of its ankle compared to other titanosaurs. One of its ankle bones (the astragalus) was symmetrical, giving this bone a trapezoidal shape when viewed from the front.

Argentinosaurus huinculensis
(temporal range: 96.2-92.19 mio. years ago)
[text from the Wikipedia article, see also link above]
Argentinosaurus is a genus of giant sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period in what is now Argentina. Although it is only known from fragmentary remains, Argentinosaurus is one of the largest known land animals of all time, perhaps the largest, measuring 30–35 metres (98–115 ft) long and weighing 65–80 tonnes (72–88 short tons). It was a member of Titanosauria, the dominant group of sauropods during the Cretaceous. It is widely regarded by many paleontologists as the biggest dinosaur ever, and perhaps lengthwise the longest animal ever, though both claims have no concrete evidence yet.
The first Argentinosaurus bone was discovered in 1987 by a farmer on his farm near the city of Plaza Huincul. A scientific excavation of the site led by the Argentine palaeontologist José Bonaparte was conducted in 1989, yielding several back vertebrae and parts of a sacrum—fused vertebrae between the back and tail vertebrae. Additional specimens include a complete femur (thigh bone) and the shaft of another. Argentinosaurus was named by Bonaparte and the Argentine palaeontologist Rodolfo Coria in 1993; the genus contains a single species, A. huinculensis. The generic name Argentinosaurus means "Argentine lizard", and the specific name huinculensis refers to its place of discovery, Plaza Huincul.
The fragmentary nature of Argentinosaurus remains makes their interpretation difficult. Arguments revolve around the position of the recovered vertebrae within the vertebral column and the presence of accessory articulations between the vertebrae that would have strengthened the spine. A computer model of the skeleton and muscles estimated this dinosaur had a maximum speed of 7 km/h (5 mph) with a pace, a gait where the fore and hind limb of the same side of the body move simultaneously. The fossils of Argentinosaurus were recovered from the Huincul Formation, which was deposited in the middle Cenomanian to early Turonian ages (about 96 to 92 million years ago) and contains a diverse dinosaur fauna including the giant theropod Mapusaurus.

Brains, tools, language and big social groups make us the planet’s dominant species. Currently, there are 8 billion Homo sapiens across seven continents. By weight, there are more humans than all wild animals.
We’ve modified half of Earth’s land to feed ourselves. You could argue creatures like humans were bound to evolve.
In the 1980s, palaeontologist Dale Russell proposed a thought experiment in which a carnivorous dinosaur evolved into an intelligent tool user. This “dinosauroid” was big-brained with opposable thumbs and walked upright.
It’s not impossible but it’s unlikely. The biology of an animal constrains the direction of its evolution. Your starting point limits your endpoints.
There was something about Sauropods
Consider the size of dinosaurs. Beginning in the Jurassic, sauropod dinosaurs, Brontosaurus and kin evolved into 30-50 tonne giants up to 30 meters long – ten times the weight of an elephant and as long as a blue whale. This happened in multiple groups, including Diplodocidae, Brachiosauridae, Turiasauridae, Mamenchisauridae and Titanosauria.
This happened on different continents, at different times and in different climates, from deserts to rainforests. But other dinosaurs living in these environments didn’t become supergiants.
The common thread linking these animals was that they were sauropods. Something about sauropod anatomy – lungs, hollow bones with a high strength-to-weight ratio, metabolism or all these things – unlocked their evolutionary potential. It let them grow big in a way that no land animals had ever before, or have since.
Dinosaurs did enter new niches over time. Small herbivores became more common and birds diversified. Long-legged forms evolved later on, suggesting an arms race between fleet-footed predators and their prey.
Dinosaurs seem to have had increasingly complex social lives. They started living in herds and evolved elaborate horns for fighting and display. Yet dinosaurs mostly seem to repeat themselves, evolving giant herbivores and carnivores with small brains.
