It's been a long time coming I'm coming back for you, my friend To where we'd hide as children I'm coming back for you, my friend
Though my memories have faded, they Come back to haunt me once again And though my mind is somewhat jaded now It's time for me to strike again Tonight It's a hunter's moon!

Lupin Advent Calendar 2023 Days 16-24
The last 9 Advent Calendar drawings I did based on prompts posted over at lupiniii.club and what a fun event that was! It felt a lot like when I'd do inktober every year, which I do kinda miss. So many I'll do another Advent Calendar for 2024!

ok advent really is like. life is terrible. there’s so much suffering. we’re all dying and we hurt each other and the earth is dark and brown and cold. but REJOICE. the Lord became one of us! He was born in the dark and the cold and became a human being and suffered and He DIED. and rose again! and He is going to come again and banish death’s dark shadows for good.

So, after the cable connecting my needles broke off last night (thus causing like 1/3 of the stitches to fall off and start unraveling) and I got a bit teary and upset, I set the knitting aside. In my emo state I went and made cookies and then ate several cookies ( chocolate chip). Then today I just decided to bit the bullet and rip.
I have decided to go up a needle size to see what that does, and I'll be working on a newer cable, and a longer one at that. in addition, I'm rejigging the color progression. I was going to use mini-skeins in between the rainbow variegated yarn and the knit picks muse yarn ( the one that's more on a white/cream base) but I feel like that might have gotten the mini-skeins a bit lost and mottled. So after a bit of a rethink, I think the above will be the color progression I'll use. It makes use of the mini-skeins nicely and will allow for distinct blocks of color between the other sections. There likely will be distinctly chonkier sections with the knit picks yarn, but it'll work out hopefully.
I needed to put a reference in as to how I wanted the colors to go, so that's what this post is for. It's also a formal request to the universe that, hey please, please, third time's a charm, right? Let this be the time that I can get through the shawl without any (at least major) errors.
While I was mid-sad about the loss of progress I was listening to a podcast with a favorite poet of mine (David Whyte)... And he and the host had mentioned journeys. It got me to thinking that while yes, I have lost progress, that knitting is also supposed to be about the joy of making. And I haven't lost any "making" not really. I will just be -remaking. It's just a slightly unplanned part of the journey, but still part of the journey. That then reminded me of a Shakespeare quote I used to have up on the back of my childhood bedroom door (from Troilus and Cressida), " Things won are done, Joy's soul lies in the doing." Thus, I will try and focus on taking and making joy as I go along, to just enjoy the process, not just the product.

The queerness of Mary: An Advent reflection
For more on Mary through a trans lens, check out this poem or listen to a podcast episode all about “God’s transition, Mary’s trans-gressive yes, and Joseph’s trans-formation into an ally.”
Transcript below the readmore.
[Avery, a white genderqueer person with short brown hair, necklace, green sweater, and dangly earring speaks in front of a trans flag printed with an angel and the text “to be queer is to be holy.”]
Let's talk about the queerness of Mary!
The third Sunday in Advent centers joy — a joy that goes beyond extreme happiness, into an abiding sense of rightness that does not vanish in the midst of trouble or grief.
This is a queer joy, a binary breaking joy that can coexist with sorrow the way a candle can coexist with shadow.
This is the joy of Mary, the joy of her defiant yes to accepting God’s request for shelter in her womb — a yes that put Mary at risk of being misunderstood, ostracized, and shamed by her own community. The teenage girl whom the angel Gabriel hailed as full of Grace” entered, in the eyes of her society, into disgrace.
Queer and trans folk also know what it is to say “yes” to becoming all God calls us to be, which is a simultaneous “yes” to disgrace in the eyes of the world.
For Mary, any judgment she faced by human beings could not quell her joy at being a vital part of God’s upturning — the lifting up of the lowly and the casting down of the mighty.
May it be the same for us queer and trans folk — may the joy that grows within us as we live into our full selves transcend the troubles that the world heaps upon us.

Two things I am learning this year:
1) a girl can be so so tired and still go direct groups of people and be bright and cheerful about it
2) sometimes skipping class to take a nap is the right choice

Current state of the shawl! I know the photo is at a bit of an odd angle, but the shawl is knit on the bias, and will essentially form a long parallelogram. You can see, somewhat anyhow, the open areas that the yarn-overs create in the pattern. I'm pretty happy with the colors so far and the way things are working up. It looks stripier here than I feel like it does in person (other than that transition from the green mini-skein into the knitpicks muse speckled yarn). I'm close ( knock on wood - i swear i am never so superstitious as hen I'm knitting and scared of errors or crises) to finishing this skein of Muse, and will be going on to the first skein of Wildflower Yarn's Unicorn Poop (:DDDDD - the name gets me very time, smile inducing)
I feel like I am the slowest knitter ever, and I am going to be making this thing til idk armageddon, the universe dies its cold death, or I can find a pair of shoes that makes my feet look cute (the first two are more likely - TRUST.) . However, the fabric is soft and so *bouncy*; it is eminently squishable! This color palette too just is a joy to look at. It's a lucky charms marshmallow of a thing, a my little pony pastel princess of a shawl. So, if i can manage to finish it before the end of forever (without any disasters- told you, superstitious when knitting... (¬_¬)' ) I think I just might love curling up in this thing.
