#The Old Sugarman Place

No I'm not done actually. Morally grey characters in BoJack Horseman are one of the main themes and as a result I don't believe anyone is 100% bad or good. But I think this especially applies to Joseph. I see a lot of videos with him where people comment that they used to kind of like him and see him as sympathetic until they watched Times Arrow or until they finished The Old Sugarman Place or something, but the fact of the matter is that if Joseph were evil, he wouldn't have been happily married. If Joseph were evil, he would've lobotomized his wife at the first chance he got, but the thing that people keep forgetting is that he very specifically lobotomized Honey because she was PROVING TO BE AN ACTIVE DANGER TO THE LIFE OF HIS DAUGHTER. Sure, he only had one solution to this problem, but he waited until the last possible moment to use said solution.
Also, just think about it. A man who tortures the women he's close to, just because he's horrible and never bothered to think how they would feel? We already have a character like that in the show, who is portrayed as a parodic caricature. But a man who is 100% a product of his upbringing, never thinking of trying to be anything else? A man who, despite this upbringing, still loves his wife and daughter? A man who has such a misguided view on how to support said wife and daughter that he believes that destroying his daughter's possessions and lobotomizing his wife is as thoughtful and helpful as teaching his daughter to stand up for herself against her bullies, and standing up for his daughter against his wife?
Spine-chilling.

If I could do things differently, I would make very precise changes at very specific points in my life.
The thing is, I could not have done things differently then. I wasn't equipped to even begin to think about them the way I am now, after years of recovery and sorting myself out.
We want to commit this kind of retrospective time adjustment--that's regret. But there's a critical danger in looking at yourself at any point in your life and assuming it has the same access to the viewpoints you have now. If you were a buggy mess, you can't expect yourself to have behaved like the patched version.
Regret is a cheap, easily accessible emotion when it comes to mental toll. We love falling into regret, even when it hurts. It's zero sum misery. It's comforting, because you know exactly what it is, and how to wallow in it.
Calm, resigned, thoughtful courses of action, on the other hand, involve potential change, and brethren, our brains would rather boil. We hate that shit. Change leads to more change, and that change leads to more change, and that's endlessly threatening to us, because it might end up at the single biggest threat our brains can imagine:
What if we were wrong about something?
Worse, what if we were wrong about something and then had to take accountability for it?
We aren't built to enjoy this as an experience. If we were, the world would be an easier and better place.
Why don't we enjoy it? Because we expect people to hurt us for it.
Which leads to the question...
*Do* people hurt us for it?
I have no idea, but it seems like us. We're bastards like that, sometimes.
I wonder what's on HBO.

“Oh Bojack, look at you! You’re as cute as a button in that little sailor suit!”
“You really think so, Grandma?”
Little Bojack Sugarman batted his eyes sweetly, stretching his arms out so his grandmother could see his full outfit. To tell the truth, he didn’t really like being dressed as a sailor that much, but he loved being doted on by his grandmother and that made it worth it.
“No doubt about it! Mr. and Mrs. Bloodsworth are going to love it, you’ll be the talk of the dinner party!”
“Now Honey, we’re going to a dinner party with the Creamermans,”
Her husband, Joseph, corrected her sternly.
“You really ought to listen better when we make plans like this!”
“Oh yes, that’s right!”
Honey laughed her mistake off.
“Corbin could have been part of the family, you know. He would have been a really good match for Beatrice if she’d gotten her act together. If you’d taught her better. A perfectly good business opportunity, for shame.”
Joseph lamented, speaking in a low voice and leaning towards Honey in hopes that Bojack wouldn’t hear.
But Bojack wasn’t dumb, he had eyes and ears and knew his grandfather wasn’t happy with his mother.
“Does that mean Mr. Creamerman could have been my daddy? I’d like that, I’ve always wanted a daddy. Mommy won’t tell me about mine.”
Joseph panicked a bit once he realized his grandson had heard him, but he quickly stood up straight and rigid to save face.
“Well Bojack, your father was a no-good bum and a louse, and that’s all you need to know.”
Honey could sense the tension between her husband and grandson and she knew little Bojack had a lot more questions, but she didn’t want this to escalate any further. So she knelt down to the colt’s eye level and started pinching his cheeks affectionately.
“You’ll get to show everyone the lollipop song, won’t that be swell? And if you’re a good boy, Uncle Crackerjack will take you out for ice cream afterwards!”
Bojack started to feel a bit better at the thought of spending time with his uncle. He didn’t really want to perform in front of a crowd but it was better than being with his mother who did nothing but insult him. This was just the small price he had to pay.
As long as he was loved by somebody, Bojack wouldn’t stop dancing.
~~~~~~~~~~
More of the “Crackerjack lives” AU! Here is a look into Bojack’s relationship with his grandparents, which is definitely a lot better than his relationship with his mother but not without its flaws.  Joseph is still as prideful and self-centered as ever, deflecting blame for all the problems in his family and treating Beatrice more like a failed business pawn than a person who was failed by the people around her. Honey takes on the brunt of Joseph’s gripes but she tries to make sure her grandson is loved and happy like his uncle was growing up, even though she sometimes forgets things nowadays.  And of course, Bojack lives with the persistent absence of his father and the pressing question of what his life could have been like if his family were different, if he had a daddy of his own. Would it be better?
~~~~~~~~~~
[Image Description: Bojack is an anthromorphic horse child with a brown coat, black mane, and white markings on his nose and forehead. He stands with his arms outstretched as he shows off his blue-and-white sailor suit, smiling nervously up at his grandfather, Joseph Sugarman.
Joseph stares down at him with his arms crossed and a stern frown on his wrinkled face. He has a lighter brown coat with a graying brown mane, with darker brown around his snout and a white forehead diamond that matches Bojack's. He wears an off-white suit with a blue bowtie.
Honey Sugarman kneels down next to Bojack, smiling at him affectionately and holding his face in her hands. Her curled mane is auburn but graying, and her coat is reddish brown. She wears a pale teal dress with a red flower pattern, a bracelet on her left wrist, and red lipstick for an upper-class look.
End Image Description.]

I love The Old Sugarman Place and Time’s Arrow (the metaphor and the show) from Bojack Horseman to fucking death and I love when mean characters are given backstory as to why they act so.

Dragon oc rambles part 1 - Krovin!!!
Tumblr media
Welp it’s about to be my birthday in like two days so it’s probably about time I post this next ramble DBFJFJ sorry again that this took forever ive been grinding on Pokémon Violet/j
Anyways Krovin
Strange Homosexual man‼️🇺🇸
a helper around the refugee camp area ig! He helps with food stuff mostly but occasionally helps with like medical stuff n all that jazz,, when he’s not doing that he’s just kinda helping individuals with whatever they may need
YET this man refuses to care for himself in the slightest like sir please sleep for more than 3 hours☹️‼️
He constantly busies himself by helping around the camp however he can when he can because,, well I mean people are losing their homes and families and it’s just a BAD TIME.
So if he can help people and make it so life is SLIGHTLY less shitty then he’s doing good,, and he’ll feel selfish and awful if he stops take care about himself for even a minute
He gets it from his childhood 😁😁 yeah I know an OC with a troubling childhood !! Who coulda seen this coming!
Basically his mother had lost her first son before having Krovin which was already bad enough,, and then her husband went and died after getting caught up in a fight during this one dragon civil war typa conflict,, as you can imagine her mental state kinda went down the drain <33
She wouldn’t leave her bed,, she wouldn’t eat, she kinda just let herself rot away in her room for like several weeks,, eventually Krovin decided to try and take care of her FOR her, so starting when he was around 13-14 all the way up until he was like 26 maybe, he’d make food, he’d make sure she bathed, he’d try to help with her all mental issues and grief and all that jazz
He even started helping around town for some extra money ‼️🔥🔥💰💰🗣 yknow to buy more food and stuff,,
No matter what Krovin did though his mom just couldn’t seem to get better,, mentally at least. Even after years and years of him trying to help her she couldn’t move on
So yeah not a good time for Krovin
Eventually his mother died from a sickness plus her age in her sleep,, which Krovin ended up blaming himself for
Did he not try hard enough? Should he have done more? Maybe he should’ve gotten more money to afford medicine ,, maybe he should’ve BEEN A BETTER SON 🗣🗣🗣🗣 sorry I love that song/j
But yeah all of that is kinda why Krovin refuses to take time to properly care for himself,, he had this mindset that if he didn’t give the whole world for someone he cares for, they’d leave, disappear, say byebye or something like that!!!!!! He’s a lil messed up!!! Traumatized man☹️☹️
Anyways when the whole unicorn takeover thing happened he volunteered to help around and stuff, he hit the jackpot with this one/J
This is when he met Norva. She’d frequently turn up with them dragon refugees and occasionally visit from time to time,, checking in on everyone n all. Krovin liked that she was strong and brave, but was also real damn upset that such a young gal had to go through this situation with everyone else,, and she actually reminded him of when he cared for his mom and that like, REALLY upset him
So during one of her visits he’d approached her and they got to talking and soon became besties ‼️‼️
As I said Krovin admired her strength and bravery, and she appreciated his help around camp,, so yeah they became pretty close. Fatherless gang!!!!/J
And that’s all I have to say about Krovin for now sorry this was such a long ramble OUGH he’s just really neat to me,, dad figure man!!!! Who doesn’t love those dad figures am I right
Anyways next ramble will be forrrrr Treya! Hopefully his ramble will come out quicker this time RDHFGCU

Off topic.
It might be just a coincidendence, but the Eddie's wife in "Bojack Horseman" being named Lorraine is a great easter egg.

It is too good to be just a coincidence.

im bored so 5 edward hopper paintings and a piece of media they remind me of (i fucking LOVE edward hopper paintings pls indulge)
1. Summer Afternoon, 1947:
Tumblr media
This reminds me of Thunder Road by Bruce Springsteen. Just, the whole vibe looks lonely, quiet, and intimate, but full of potential energy all the same.
2. High Noon, 1949:
Tumblr media
My Own Private Idaho. Obviously. I actually think the shots of the house in the desert from the movie could be referencing this painting. I’d like to imagine that woman is Mike’s mother. god i fucking love that movie.
3. Nighthawks, 1942:
Tumblr media
I know everyone knows this one. this one to me is Darkness on the Edge of Town by Bruce Springsteen. the whole vibe kinda reminds me of the depressing working man vibe of the album and specifically the song. i wrote an essay on this album analyzing it through a queer lens and i brought up this painting idk it just. it fits.
4. Gas, 1940
Tumblr media
This reminds me of Bojack Horseman season 4 episode 2 “The Old Sugarman Place.” Such a great episode and if u havent seen it i totally recommend watching the series. It’s so beautiful and this road with the gas station reminds me of the road out from the house into town where things went wrong and man. it’s so heartwrenching.
5. New York Corner, 1913
Tumblr media
Scapegoat but this reminds me so much of Catcher in the Rye. It looks like winter, and it’s in new york city. Actually a lot of edward hopper’s whole career could be catcher because it’s just all about lonliness and people. This is how i think holden caulfield sees the streets; it looks bleak and everyone is the same.

Hi, I’m looking for fics where Kagome and/or Inuyasha deal with depression/anxiety. I like longer stories but one-shots are totally fine too. I would prefer stories from before 2019 so there’s no Yashahime influence. Also please no sessrin in the recs. Thank you so much!
Hi anon, thank you for the ask! Most of the fics we could find that fit your criteria are one shots, but there are a few longer stories sprinkled throughout. In order to provide more reading material, we split the list into stories written in 2019 or earlier and stories that were written after 2019 but contain no references to Yashahime (characters, plot, or otherwise). There shouldn't be any SessRin references in any of the fics either.
This is a difficult subject to search for without having read a story in its entirety, so we strongly encourage anyone who knows of any others to leave more recs in the reblogs/replies!

[2019 or Earlier]
He Just Wouldn't Stop by @artistefish (G)
Just because she's back doesn't mean there aren't scars. Some wounds take more than time to heal, and some never heal at all. A post-canon look at an unexpected repercussion of Kagome's three year absence.
--
Guilty Hero by Eggry (T)
The city is recovering after a crippling war against Naraku. But while time moves on, Inu-Yasha doesn't. Plagued with guilt over a terrible deed, alcohol is his only escape from the nightmare of reality. At their wit's end with him, Sango and Miroku are on the verge of giving up until Kagome Higurashi arrives to take him under her wing.
--
Sleep, My Dear by Stars_Sky_See (T)
Kagome was quickly adjusting to her new life with the help of her now husband. Life had all around been easier since her return and everyone was grateful. However, life wasn’t so merciful, with every two steps forward there was always one step back.
--
The Ghosts of Suicide Forest by @splendentgoddess (T)
Aokigahara, known by some as Suicide Forest. It is a place of mystery, beauty and death. Roughly 100 people go there annually to commit suicide, but why? The better question, though, is can Kagome find and rescue Yuka before it is too late?
--
Broken Glass by SleepWalkingChickens (M)
Growing up is hard, especially when things are changing. Kagome is plunged into a new world, complete with new problems. The past is hard to let go of and baggage builds up. Unravel it and you’re met with truth. Can love win over Inuyasha's sins?
--
It Goes Like This by @witchygirl99 (G)
It goes like this.
“Hey! I haven’t seen you in a while!” Kagome exclaims, smiling at him. Her eyes are dark brown and beautiful, captivating.
Five different answers pop into his head, all of them friendly and inviting for conversation. It’s not what comes out.
Inuyasha isn't the main character of anyone's story. With Kagome, that feeling starts to change.
--
[Post 2019 w/ No Yashahime References]
Pictures of Happiness by @memilylove (M)
The loss of his high school sweetheart changed more than Inuyasha realized. With the encouragement of friends, he finally gives himself another shot at getting help. The path is not easy, but he soon finds that perhaps there is a point to all this. Is it really possible to be happy again and to find that you love another?
--
Other Reasons to Stay Awake by @ajoy3fanfics (NR)
Kagome suffers from PTSD after she returns to her side of the well
--
Shattered by My-Crazy-Awesome-Sox (T)
Oneshot: Leading a double life has got to be stressful. What happens when it all starts falling apart for Kagome? Everything has been pent up for too long, and now it's all crashing down around her. For anyone who's ever had a breakdown...
--
A Horse With No Name by @roseheartwhitefox (T)
The story of what happened to Inuyasha after Kagome disappeared when the well closed for 3 years, heavily referencing the episode "The Old Sugarman Place" from "BoJack Horseman". I feel as if after everything that happened and Kagome disappeared, Inuyasha would need time to grieve the loss. This is that story. Deals with themes of depression, loneliness, and loss.
--
Stay by @akitokihojo (G)
He nodded again, pulling away to gently press his forehead to hers for a moment. "I get it." Inuyasha breathed before leaning back to look her in the eyes. "But, one of these days you'll understand that no matter what happens, I won't take a damn thing back. You'll see that I don't want it back. I feel like my heart's safer with you, anyway."
--
Kagome's Unwitting Depression by @cstormsinukagblog (M)
Kagome sees something that she isn't meant to see, and it kind of breaks her. Can she and Inuyasha repair the damage before she gives up hope?
--
Breaking the Habit: Rewrite by @kstewdeux (M)
After being separated for six years, Inuyasha and Kagome are reunited on her side of the well. TW: SI, Mental Illness.
--
The Voice Inside My Head by @fawn-eyed-girl (E)
When Kagome returns to the Feudal era a week after a particular nasty fight with Inuyasha, he realizes something’s not right. Is it too late for Inuyasha and Kagome—have the years of fighting broken them apart for good? Or will they be able to find a way forward, together?
