As an aside i do love this movie. It's not really scary but like it's so refreshing to see a horror movie where all the characters are likable and end up being so supportive of one another.. Like they were so worried about Eleanor's mental state :( The Haunting makes me feel SOOOO good

I watched The Haunting (1999) in middle school and I remember nothing about it except that Owen Wilson was there and annoying.
I am watching The Haunting (1999) again am learning that apparently I found Owen Wilson so annoying that he prevented me from remembering Catherine Zeta-Jones? Misogyny. Homophobia.

Finished reading The Haunting of Hill House and my dad instantly wanted my opinion on The Haunting (1999). It took us 3 hours to watch a two hour movie because the streaming service is really bad but in the end I have to say…
The haunting is overhated. Yes it does have some dated effects and the story gets a little wonky but it was ultimately enjoyable. It’s definitely a victim of its time (the 90s)… especially the eyebrows… but it’s fun.
Really the first half is the best as it follows the book a bit more closely, adapting and changing but in a way that’s interesting and fitting. They have some great interactions and comedy etc and the house is gorgeous and confusing. I didn’t mind it was a bit Winchester house based too etc.
The second half is when it starts to go down hill. As it looses its core. Everyone else fucking disappears but Eleanor and it becomes mainly “look at our CGI children”… again I don’t mind the mystery and some of this but with the lack of subtly, build up and character relationships it falls a bit flat. (Victim of the 1990s) like everyone shows back up towards the end and is suddenly all concerned and caring for Nell and it’s like???? Frustrating as it didn’t earn that… nor did we really get to develop or see anyone else get haunted.
Idk I think id be a bit less frustrated if it wasn’t following a bit more closely towards the beginning of the movie, like introducing the whole thing of her mother and hearing knocks in her head, everyone having a nice dynamic etc.
I think the best way to describe it is that they really went a “Haunted mansion 2003” route in the final few acts that just…. Not a fan

24 years late to this party but I brought snacks and a fanedit
(BTW was anyone gonna tell me that an entertaining, suspenseful , horror existed with Owen Wilson AND Catherine Zeta Jones playing a canon bi character or was I just supposed to find this out myself by actually watching it finally?)

I'm convinced that 1998-99 was a golden year for films. Some of my absolute favorites and cult classics came from this era.

THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE THOUGHTS
I picked up this book with a few expectations. I bought it three days ago because I was at a book store and I was intrigued. Partially because I knew there was a show, I thought I would never watch, and because I like reading horror.
I can’t watch horror for the most part but I can read which confuses most people as they think the imagination is worse than watching someone else’s interpretation. Anyway, this book has been really interesting.
And when I came to tumblr as I usually do when I finish a novel I enjoy I found myself intrigued by the commentary. I also decided that I had to watch the 1963 movie. I have seen the 1999 remake and it is actually one of the few horror movies I like. Which is apparently not common.
I bought the penguin random house copy of the book so it came with an introduction which tells you to on ignore the remake as well which I find hilarious. Back on track I want to talk about Eleanor and Theo.
I do read Theo as queer coded even if that was not the authors intent. I’m not sure whether it was or not but in the opening it states that Shirley Jackson did not like to bring sex into her books and that they believe this negates the queer theory. I don’t agree with that as sex/relationship(romantic) isn’t needed for a character or person to be queer coded.
I also think that Theo and Eleanor’s relationship has romantic aspects but I don’t think Eleanor is queer. Eleanor maybe 32 but she does not have the mind of a 32 year old. Her life has lead to that part of her not developing. She views all romance in a dream because to her it’s what happens later in life.
Like when children dream of falling love. Eleanor does not feel romantic love because her brain realizes she to fragile for it and subconsciously protects itself. Making all love dreamlike. And things that occur at the end, “Journeys end in lovers meeting”.
So if Eleanor was different and it was a different set of circumstances I could totally see them together. But Eleanor’s mental state was very fragile and I think in a way Hill House was haunting her from the time she heard about it. That it was calling, if you believe that it was another force and not Eleanor herself who manifested what happened.
Which is another interesting theory when it comes to her. Perhaps everything came from her or from something darker that tried once when she was a child and then found another way and set up the whole situation.
There’s also the story the 1999 went with where she was related to the Crains which is an interesting take.
