Time Travel Question 10: Ancient History III
These Questions are the result of suggestions from the previous iteration. I'm combining some similar ones, so some are going to be a little vague. I'm going to also split into a whole lot of different polls because there were so many good and creative ideas. (Seriously, I love the people of Tumblr).
Please add new suggestions for this category below if you have them for future consideration.
You are welcome to suggest specific things from the Library of Alexandria. There will be polls for that.

The First Temple predicted every death in the series--including Anne’s
On impulse, I rewatched The First Temple before watching The Beginning of the End, which proved to be an excellent idea. I was always confused why the first temple had this added emphasis: no title sequence, twice the length as the other temples.
With the new episode out, and Darcy’s threat to kill Anne, the answer is clear. The First Temple foreshadowed every death in the series.
Tumblr media
Our first indicator is an off-handed line Marcy gives. “No frog, toad, or newt has ever survived the temple.” But the weight of the foreshadowing falls in the games they play.
First, Marcy gets so caught up in making sure that the Rubik’s cube is in the perfect configuration, that she doesn’t care how she’s hurting her friends. Similarly, Sasha got so caught up in controlling Anne, that she didn’t realize how she was hurting her. And then she did, and decided to fall off a cliff and almost die.
The second one is, of course, Amphibia’s witty and somewhat infuriating way of teasing Marcy’s death. In the temple with the green squares, there are two ways to die. One is by being crushed. The other is by being burned alive by a blade-like flame. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
Tumblr media
Their third trial was the one that confused me, though. It taught humility, which I took as an indicator that the temples are malicious in nature--Marcy has an ego problem, meaning she bounces between extreme confidence and extreme humility, defaulting to the second as her more basic response, and a benevolent wit temple would teach her about the balance between those things.
Well, now it all makes sense. We’ve got a chess board, similar to the one Andrias set up. We have most of our characters on the good side, except one, dressed in black, helmet on her head, unwillingly forced to try to kill the people who she so deeply cares about.
Tumblr media
Then, what Anne says to Hop Pop? “Just because I’m mad at you, doesn’t mean I want to kill you!” That’s the key to Marcy’s forgiveness of Anne and mostly Sasha for being shitty friends.
Meanwhile, the end of the game was the chilling part. Marcy flipped the wart. Got rid of her lead, the one player she needed in order to win.
Anne is the one player we need in order to win.
Hence, Anne will die, to save the game. They have to forfeit, because Andrias cheats at the game (brings dead people back to life), so they will have to cheat at the game as well.

Mystery Monday #38: Don't be jealous of my hue
(This is not the big post I've been teasing. I'm still working on it. Also it will be a multiple parter.)
So the second room in the first temple had a dangerous floor with many tiles. Blue was death by crushing, red was death by fire, and green (the color of envy) was the safe color. There were also a lot more blue tiles than red or green.
Call me crazy, but I think there's more here than meets the eye.
You see, while rewatching The First Temple, I paused at the exact moment where Marcy lands on the green tile. And I remembered that those three colors represent the Calamity Powers and everything about them. So it only makes sense that this room is connected to each power.
First we will go with red, the color of Strength. The fire trap could be a reference to the volcanic setting of The Third Temple. It could be a reference to Sasha's fiery temper. It could even refer to the fact that she doesn't know when to quit, just like a fire can't quit.
Next we have blue, the color of Heart. The crushing trap could be a reference to The Second Temple's second trial of saving someone from being crushed in an avalanche. It could be referring to the fact that when someone loves and cares about you, having them let you down is "crushing." And the many more blue tiles than red or green could be a reference to Anne appearing in many more episodes than Marcy or Sasha.
And lastly we get to green, the color of Wit and Envy. The Envy part could be referring to Marcy being envious of her friends who get to stay together while she moves away. (I'm not saying that's why green is the color of envy; I'm saying that could be why green was chosen as the color of Marcy's Calamity Power.) And green being the safe color could refer to Marcy being so innocent that she would do anything for her friends -- Marcy being the "safe" person to talk to and having the purest motives.
So I hope you've enjoyed this little rabbit hole I decided to dive into this week. Have a great Month of Marcy, and see you next time on Mystery Monday!
P.S. Please send in topic ideas!

The First Temple
I feel like this episode best encapsulates the closest thing I feel is a flaw of Marcy's -- her hyperfocus to the exclusion of others. Her extreme focus to the exclusion of what's happening around her does cause problems for others and also has potential to harm her (by not paying attention to her surroundings).
The trouble with that is that it feels like a mixed bag to call it a flaw. Yes, it causes problems and is something she should work --to an extent-- while at the same time, being super invested & focused on a certain topic isn't really a bad trait to have. (I can get like that myself.)
This episode also really shows off how much Marcy values her intelligence; it's what she has to offer; it's what she's good at. What's more interesting to me, is how much she boosts herself, saying how good she is at things, expressing her deep interest in things (mostly biological with special interest in plants). I know I've mentioned this before, but Marcy's enthusiasm is fascinating to me.
As much as she seems to derive value from how useful she can be (this will appear more in the next episode, oh boy), she's also very confident and expressive. Maybe that's why it's hard (for me) to pin down to think about/explain Marcy --
She's both driven by a desire to not be alone so therefore tries to be agreeable AND openly expresses her interests which she pushes on/tries to share with others WHILE ALSO being oblivious of the world around AND highly hyperfocused on particular aspect of the world around her. She's open and expressive, yet feels awkward in social settings. She prizes her intelligence and skill in puzzles, yet feels it's all she has to offer.
I feel like there's more I could say, but basically: Marcy has a lot of complex character traits that either seem to contradict or simultaneously present as positive or negative emotions.
Also, I think this might have been when Marcy really started seeing the Plantars a little more specifically. Up to this point, she was aware that they were important to Anne. (She loves the found family trope, after all.) But up to now, she may have seen them more as an Important Point in Anne's journey and less as interpersonal relationships Anne has developed.
But then, I think that's because is not very good at reading social cues. I interpret this as a large part of why Marcy tries so hard to be likable by being useful. But I'll probably get into this more next time.

This brief poem is rich in layered meanings. The “dark cloud” in which the Lord intends to dwell refers not only to the cloud that filled the Temple but to the darkness of the windowless holy of holies and to the mystery of the God enthroned invisibly upon the cherubim as well. Solomon calls the Temple he offers God a 'firm base', using terminology similar to that used for God’s firm establishment of Solomon’s own kingdom. Finally, Solomon intends this as a place for God to yashab, but the Hebrew word yashab can mean “to dwell” or “to sit.” In other words, the Temple can be understood both as a place where God resides and as the earthly foundation of God’s [true] heavenly throne. The double meaning allows an understanding of the divine Presence as both transcendent and graciously immanent.

#3: The First Temple
If you remember, I missed a few weeks since then unfortunately, but last time was True Colors -- the one everybody and their mother loves! That means we're into the episodes now that are absolutely PERFECT!!! And this one is this high because the whole temple was specifically designed for the Best Character Ever to absolutely shine!
I don't need to gush about how awesome Marcy is at this point -- I did dedicate this entire blog to her -- but come on, if you don't absolutely LOVE Marcy, your heart is not working right.
Anyway. Let's go through the parts.
The beginning kinda picked up where the last episode left off. Kind of an awkward scene, but it needed to be. Just because we have a super fun episode doesn't mean we can't or shouldn't have a serious beginning; in fact it was a good thing, as it juxtaposed the rest of the episode and set up the main conflict. There were times when the conflict got to be a bit much, especially after they had been arguing for so long only to not come to an agreement to work together for the duration of the dangerous temple, but overall it added to the episode.
Then the ride to the temple. Specifically Hop Pop's ride to the temple. It's subtle, but the fact that Marcy's books rode on top instead of Hop Pop shows off Marcy's carelessness in planning for the details of the trip. But I appreciate how she remembered how uncomfortable he was and gave him a "Hop Pocket" for the next temple and for the trip to Newtopia (oddly enough, he wasn't riding in it for the third temple, but he was riding on top while Joe carried Frobo with his feet).
Speaking of subtle comparisons between the temple episodes, as I was looking at the image galleries for this post, I noticed the backgrounds. The brain temple was vibrant and green. The heart temple was icy and blue. And the strength temple was fiery and red.
Next, the Rubik's Cube test. While it's true that Marcy zoning in on the cube made it difficult for her friends to, you know, survive the room, it's also true that that seems to be what the temple wanted. The temples always want you to do something stupid in the first challenge, whether it be tuning everything else out completely, throwing away your coat in the arctic, or running down a path filled with deadly creatures jumping up to eat you, with lava on both sides.
Then, the color test. The red tiles were death by fire (like the lava at the third temple), the blue tiles were death by crushing (like the avalanche at the second temple), and the green tiles were safe (like the relative safety of the first temple). Interesting how the temple chose to make it a two person test -- almost as if it knew what was going on between Anne and Hop Pop.
And the last test: Flipwart. The last test of each temple always involves a deeper aspect of the surface quality that got you there in the first place: for brains it was wisdom and humility, for heart it was responsibility, and for strength it was persistence.
And the very end: charging the stone. The outhouse, like every other aspect of this temple, was proof that looks can be deceiving. The outhouse initially looked like... well, an outhouse, the first room initially looked like a dead end, the second room initially looked like a dance floor, and the third room initially looked like a giant game of flipwart. Which now that I think about it, this could be foreshadowing that Marcy, the one who looked like the sweetest and most innocent of the group, was actually the one who got them stranded in Amphibia on purpose.
And then the very very end in Andrias's palace. Obviously this was meant to be foreshadowing The Core. But I'm going to talk about what Andrias said here:
The prophecy is coming undone, my lord. Soon we will have our revenge!
Obviously he is referring to the Olm prophecy. But which one? At first it seems he is referring to the one shown in the journal:
Three stars burning bright
Come from beyond to expel the night
Should they fight or embrace the fall
Their choice will determine all
This prophecy would come undone if the humans left for earth without "expelling the night."
As usual, I have a slightly different interpretation. Andrias refers to the prophecy that the box will return one day. This prophecy would also come undone if the humans managed to charge all three stones and send themselves back to earth.
It's also possible these two prophecies are one and the same. I don't think so because the one above doesn't even mention the box. But on the other hand, it DOES mention strangers "com[ing] from beyond," and the primary known method of dimensional travel in this universe is the box. (The portal that opened up in Dr. Frakes' lab counts as being caused by the box, and Andrias wasn't aware of that anyway.)
The other aspect is revenge: at first, it sounds like Andrias and his lord want revenge on Anne or Marcy for some reason. But, say it with me now, I have a slightly different interpretation. Andrias's revenge is not so much against someone as it is for The Core and its unquenchable thirst for conquest.
And... that's the note the episode ended on! I'll conclude with two observations I came to as I was writing this post:
All three temple episodes are similar in more ways than I initially realized
And every single scene in this episode was not what it seemed at first glance
This was one of the BEST episodes in the whole show because it gave our BEST GIRL her biggest chance to "shin[e] bright!"
(P.S. Sorry for taking so long to finish this one. Life has gotten in the way recently and this was a pretty big episode to write about. I had started writing this post after the last one, but I didn't finish it until today.)
