Issue 7 (Nov / Dec 1991) of CYBERTEK - a cyberpunk zine / newsletter featuring articles on technology, security and self-reliance. Shared with permission from Dr. Aure Schrock (original tweet), who kindly told me that some issues of CYBERTEK can be found on the Internet Archives (here's Issue 9 from Jan / Feb 1995). Edit: With regards to some of the comments from people on this post, I asked Cyber-Tek's editor if he'd like to add a clarification: "1. That issue came out over 20 years ago. 2. I'm a quarter Jewish. 3. Most of the kleptocrats who comprise what might be called The New World Order are WASPs. 4. Some people have too much time on their hands."

You and V hide in a safe house after a gig gone wrong pt1
18+++
TF4M/m4m?/m4f? I don’t fucking know, just in case
Put down the pitchforks and torches!!! I know it’s not a cod one but I’ve been on a cyberpunk kick recently so I wanted to make some. I’ll probably have another ghost one tomorrow or the next day, i literally have a journal page where I write ideas for these lol and most are ghost
The v in the photo is my v in game, I guess she’s technically trans since it’s a woman, with a penis, (don’t ask, I just like to make characters like that in games that let me, it’s the same in baldurs gate).
This might be a bit silly mainly because of the slang that cyberpunk uses i.e choom, preem, nova, and gonk. I will use those in this so prep for a chuckle while you’re aroused lol. It’ll probably have a fair bit of plot, at least more than I usually have so it will probably be longer as well, the sexual stuff will be towards the end. I will also make a second part so it isn’t insanely long.
Enjoy!!!!
You’ve been pretty desperate for eddies, you’ve went to every fixer you know and none had any gigs, none that wouldn’t kill you anyway. That was, until you met V, she wasn’t a fixer but she was a merc who needed help and was willing to pay handsomely for it. She hit you up on your holo and made an offer you literally couldn’t refuse, you needed eddies and were willing to get them in almost any way, and 15k for a simple snatch and grab job? Fucking preem. You decided to meet her at the afterlife, a pretty fancy bar as far as you were concerned, all the best fixers in the city hang out there, and now you’re gonna go.
You walk in and look around, you spot her, V, she’s sitting at the bar in a tattered plaid crop top, barely covering her chest in any way, some nice, tight black jeans, and some long, what seem to be combat boots, exo jacks, you don’t see many people wear them, but she fucking rocks them. You also notice her tats on her upper arm, shoulders, neck, and even one on her chest, dead center, it’s fucking hot. After you finish gawking you walk up and sit next to her at the bar, stealing a glance at her chest every chance you get.
Reader-“V? I’m the one you talked to on holo”
She puts down her drink and adjusts the pink aviators you didn’t even know she was wearing. She looks you up and down, taking note of your chubby and tall stature. She chuckles
V-“so you’re the gonk who accepted my job huh? If I were you I wouldn’t have. that much pay, for that little work? Would’ve never trusted it if I were you, most people would run the other way. Guess that’s why no one took it up till you”
She picks her drink back up and takes a sip, then brushed her hair behind her right ear, letting you see the piercings she has. She talk again.
V-“don’t worry, it’s real, I’m not here to pull one over on you, I need help, and I assume you need eddies, but the job will be a bit more dangerous than i described on holo”
She smirks at you, looking you up and down again, noticing your lack of chrome, only rocking the most basic implants
Reader-“well, I had the thought that but, you’re right, I needed eddies, I couldn’t say no. So, what’s the job”
V downs the rest of her drink and puts on a very serious expression
V-“well, it is a smash and grab like I described, but it’s dangerous, we’re breaking into a militech warehouse”
She pauses, almost waiting for your outrage. You’re taken aback, you almost don’t believe it
Reader-“militech? Fucking militech! Are you serious? I may be a gonk for accepting the job but I’d be fucking insane to go against them”
You run your hand over your face to try and calm yourself down, taking a few deep breaths in the process.
Reader-“I barely even have any iron, I got a pistol a few generations behind the current stuff, and a handful of rounds, I don’t even have the ability to go against them”
V-“well, if it goes well, that shouldn’t matter, I don’t plan on shooting, this is a stealth op, I just needed someone to watch my back and help me carry some of the goods out”
You relax a bit at her words, at least she’s not completely insane enough to take on militech head on.
V-“I’ll sweeten the pot a bit too, I’ll give you something extra for helping me, call it a gift for being gonk enough to help me. You’ll get it when the jobs done”
She chuckles at her comment, smiling and showing off her purple lips, which makes you flash a quick smile as well, she has a certain air about her, you feel calm around her, and honestly, for the first time in a while, happy. You’re definitely still scared but, you’re ready.
Reader-“so, when are we doing this”
V-“few days, got a few things to straighten before hand. Guess that makes us chooms till the foreseeable future”
She smiles and reaches out her hand for a shake, which lets you see the lines all over her arms, more chrome, from the type of stuff you’ve seen, it seems like she has mantis blades. Those are far from cheap, and damn effective to, maybe everything will be good after all. You reach out and shake her hand, making her sizable breasts bounce as you shake hands, and you swear, for a split second you see one of her nipples, puffy, pink, big areola, you’re for sure jerking off to the thought of it later. You both stand and walk your separate ways, one of you sporting a full erection.
A few days later, you’re sitting around in your apartment thinking about V when you get a call, it’s her!!! You answer
V-“hey choom, it’s ready, meet me at the afterlife”
She hangs up, not even letting you get a word in, you make your way to the afterlife. When you get there you see V waiting outside, the same outfit she had on before, somehow looking even hotter.
Reader-“hey V, how you been?”
You ask with a smile on your face
V-“you know how it is, getting shot at, shooting back, night city baby”
She laughs and bites her tongue and looks back at you
V-“it’s all set up, giving you one more chance to back out, it’s dangerous, I get it if you don’t want to”
She says with a serious and almost worried tone.
Reader-“no, not backing out, I trust you”
You smile reassuringly, V gives a sigh of relief
V-“good, let’s go then, car’s over here”
She points and starts walking, expecting you to follow, you of course do. When you get to the car you both get in. V slaps the steering wheel a few times to psyche her self up before starting the engine and going
V-“so, when we get there, you stay behind me, follow my moves, everything goes well, we won’t even have to waste our bullets. It’ll be fucking nova if that happens”
You nod, she nods, and keeps driving. After a few minutes of silent, nervous driving, you arrive, a large warehouse, no outside guards, looks like you’re lucky day. V pulls up to a hole in the fence that surrounds the building that presumably she cut. She gets out of the car quietly and you follow suit. You guys walk in and she stops abruptly, you almost bumping into her, not that you’d mind coping a feel (respectfully of course). She presumably scans the area before turning to you.
V-“it’s clear, let’s go”
You follow her to a side door and make your way in, you two make your way to a back room filled with some preem stuff, guns, armor, and even some implants, top shelf shit. V notices your intrigue
V-“you can grab some stuff, not too much though, we’re looking for some specific shit”
You nod and pick up an armored vest that seems to fit with you style, as well as a new pistol. She notices and chuckles before she keeps walking. She gets to a few boxes near the corner of the room.
Reader-“what’s that shit?”
V-“what we’re here for”
She opens one of the boxes to reveal more implants, even better shit than what you saw before, experimental stuff.
V-“this is the shit my fixer what’s, some new tech, I don’t even know what it does, but hell is it expensive, grab a box”
You both pick up a box and start to leave, after just a handful of steps you hear an alarm
V-“fuck, dammit”
Reader-“what’s happening?”
V-“I don’t know, we tripped an alarm or some bullshit, run!”
You both start to run out of the building, the once barren building now filled with guards, you guys dodge them as best you can but then you come to an impasse, the only hallway out and it’s blocked by militech guards, you two take cover behind some metal crates and they open fire.
V-“fuck! Just fucking perfect”
She sighs and grunts before handing you her box.
V-“take this, and stay down till I say, got it?”
She asks sternly
Reader-“y-yeah”
You say nervously as you stack the boxes and hold them, she gives you a nod and stretches her arms, after a second you see her arms open up, her forearms now open revealing some very shiny, well kept chrome, then the blades pop out from just above her wrists, mantis blades! You’ve never seen them in action before, thank god she’s on your side.
She backs up a bit to get a running start to jump over the crates you two are hiding behind, when she does she sticks on of the blades into the wall and hangs there for a second, the guards all stare at her in shock till, in the blink of an eye, she pushes off the wall and lands on one of the guards, tearing him to shreds, another guard screams and shoots at her, she block’s every bullets with the blades, putting him down as well. You see another guard behind her that she didn’t notice, he aims at her as she flings her head around, you throw down the boxes and pull out the pistol you grabbed and fire at him, taking his head clean off, as you stand there in shock, staring at your pistol, surprised that off all things, that’s what it did, you get a bullet to the shoulder from the second guard that’s on the ground, V noticed
V-“fuck!”
She screams as she lunges towards him and cuts his head off with the blades, she flings them down to get the blood off them then she retracts them and runs over to you and picks you up.
Reader-“I-I’m good, hit my shoulder”
You say, breathless from shock and pain. She pulls a bounce back out of her pocket and jabs it into your chest, causing you too take a deep breath and instantly fill with energy
Reader-“thanks”
V-“yeah, don’t mention it”
She rips a piece of one of the dead guards shirts and wraps it around your wound. She stands you up and hands you a box, she grabs the other one.
V-“let’s go, I have a safe house nearby”
You nod and follow her back to her car. You two drive to the safe house and take the boxes inside. She plops down on the bed as you sit in a chair.
Reader-“that was…a lot”
V nods and chuckles
V-“yeah, it was. We’ll be stuck here a few days while shit cools down”
You nod and lean back in your chair.
Reader-“you were amazing, I’ve never seen those things in action before”
She smiles
V-“yeah, they costed a pretty penny but they’re worth it”
She smirks and stands to walk over to you.
V-“well, since we’re stuck here, I’ll give you that reward I was talking about”
She takes off the tattered crop top, finally letting you see those perfect tits you only got an accidental glimpse of the other day
Reader-“what-what are you-“
She covers your mouth with her hand
V-“we’re chooms now right? And I’ve noticed the way you look at me, since that first day in the afterlife, you really thought that nip slip was an accident?”
She laughs and sits on your lap, putting her lips only inches away from yours
Reader-“well, yeah, I-I really liked how you look, I mean, with that outfit what did you expect, I-“
She cuts you off again but with her lips this time, she takes you in a deep kiss forcing her tongue into your mouth and fighting your tongue for dominance, hers is winning, she nibbles on your lips as she kissed you as hard as she can. After about a minute of two of that, she pull away and stands.
V-“now for the real fun”
She takes off her boots to show her perfect feet, so smooth, her nails perfectly taken care of, then she takes off her jeans, revealing a pair of nice black panties, that seem to be a bit more…filled than they should be. When she takes them off you see it, her cock, pretty and pink, and circumcised.
Reader-“you’re-you’re a guy?!”
You say surprised but not exactly turned off. V chuckles and starts to pull of your pants as well.
V-“no, I’m trans, I’m a girl, but I grew…a bit attached to my cock, so I decided to keep it”
She laughs as she pulls your pants and underwear off, revealing your surprisingly thick and long cock. Her eyes widen, mouth slightly agape
V-“damn man, this is a fucking nova cock, what implant you got?”
She ask, genuinely certain it’s not real, you laugh the hardest you have in a while.
Reader-“no, it’s real, all me baby, can’t afford chrome anyway”
She smiles and kisses your tip a few times, leaving her purple lipstick on it as it gets hard.
V-“with this thing you could’ve been a doll, or a xbd star, like damn”
You chuckle again, it was true, you had the cock of a pornstar, but that’s not the life you wanted. She then sits on your lap again, your cocks now pressed together, she takes them in her hand and starts to stroke.
Reader-“fuck, you feel so good pressed against me”
You moan as your tips rub together, her fingers running up and down over both of you.
She chuckles and takes your hand and puts it on her tits.
V-“go ahead, touch them, my nipples are my weak spot”
She licks her lips and you start fondling her tits and pinching her nipples, making her moan and wriggle a bit under your touch.
V-“fuck yeah, preem”
She moans and leans against you, still stroking the both of you, your pre cum now mixing with hers. You pull her in for a kiss, now you’re in control as you taste her mouth and tongue as much as possible. You both moan and grunt into each others mouths as you both approach orgasm.
V-“fuck I-I’m close”
Reader-“yeah, me too V, l-let’s cum together”
She lets out a chuckle through her moans and pants as she now starts exclusively stroking your and her tips. Both of your throbbing tips are weeping from pleasure, almost begging to cover each other with cum. V moans loud and grunts
V-“cumming!”
She yells as she lets out her load all over your chest and cock, you follow suit and do the same to her, some even reaching her tits. You both lean back a bit and wind down from the pleasure, she smiles and leans down to lick her cum off your chest, and wiping yours all over herself
V-“fuck yes, this is gonna be an amazing night”
She gets up off your lap and walks over to the bed leaning over it to present her perfect asshole too you.
V-“now, you gonna fuck me or just sit over there, you fucking gonk”
She laughs and shakes her ass, causing her cock and balls to shake as she invites you into her ass. You stand up and walk over
Reader-“fuck yes”

For the WIP Game - You got my interest with Reparations/Restitution/Recompense (?)
Thanks for the ask, @ghostoffuturespast! From the WIP Game Ask
Reparations/Restitution/Recompense (?)
Heyyyy you found the non-Cyberpunk fic! This is technically named "Blackwall" in Drive but one of the ones above will be the actual title. It's a Dragon Age: Inquisition fic that centers around, well, Blackwall. Tall, dark, handsome, brooding, beard... how could I not fall for him? I loved his story and wanted to let him redeem himself for Trevalyn in Trespasser. I really adore this fic, and really, really need to finish it. It's at maybe 97% completion, I just need to finish the thing. It's also in first person, something I rarely do, but I really like it for him.
It is strange, resuming this name I abandoned years ago. Like an old suit of armor that doesn’t fit as it used to. It creaks and strains and I struggle against its constraints, yet there is comfort to be found in it.
I travel the Orlesian countryside alone, much as I did in Ferelden under the name Blackwall, helping where I can but mostly tracking down my former command who believed—wished, in cases—me dead. Some forgive, others do not. I cannot help that, but still I must try to make amends.
After some time away from Skyhold, a woman in a tavern makes it clear she fancies me and I allow her to take me into her bed. She is beautiful, though that is her only similarity to the Inquisitor. She is a welcome distraction, and I stay in town a day longer than intended before resuming my journey.
I write to the Inquisitor constantly, unsent letters piling up in a single journal filled with scratchy penmanship, covered with shaky lines from writing without light or while drunk, or both. She is my constant companion.
Thom Rainier lacked a conscience and thus she has become mine, though I suspect she would bristle at the thought. My unswerving lady of truth and justice who refuses to see herself as the paragon she is, who fails to recognize how she helps her friends and companions become something better than they were. Thom Rainier included.

okay so i realized just now i like. never talk about my OCs. like ever. mostly because i don't have much to say. so anyways. if you're new here (likely not only my friends follow this tumblr) here's art. my oc. immaculate. ready to infodump about this guy but basically, tl;dr: charismatic, poetic rebel hotshot on cyberpunk island city. never stops talking to the detriment of everyone around him. gets his ass killed. this is not a spoiler because for the story he's in this is one of the inciting incidents. im also using him for an RP my friend Lux is running and im currently making everyone hate me. i can infodump further but right now this is all you get. fuck you.
anyways, asks.
5. What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?
"Ah. A favorite thing to do. Well, I have countless hobbies, when I really try to put it down onto paper, so thinking of all of them would be incredibly, incredibly hard to do on a whim. But if I had to choose a favorite...I would say writing. I write often. I write in a journal I obtained a while ago, and there I put ramblings, sketches, memories that I wish to keep preserved, everything you should use a journal for.
9. Are you a spiritual person?  If yes, what do you practice?
"Highly. I believe in the ascension of the spirit, and that when my blood falls, I'll be sent to endless bliss. Maybe I'll be among the saints and martyrs of this world when I die. I call to them every time I risk myself in a fight, under the neon lights. They're the closest thing you can find to a halo in this place."
13. You’re given an unlimited budget to build anything you want!  What do you build and where do you build it?
"...I don't have a need for money. If I had an unlimited budget, I wouldn't be wasting it on building things that will fall and crack apart within years, only to what? Fuel my own ego? No. If I were held to...well, not gunpoint. I wouldn't mind getting shot. But, if I did not have a choice?" "...I would build a comfortable home, on the highest place I can find, so I could see everything I could."
25. Freebie!  Come up with your own question for the character to answer! This is technically a question for Knife but after she answers it it will subsequently become a question for Immaculate!
mint why. im not a creative person. i asked a friend what i should ask and he said "what's the capital of sweden"
"Stockholm."
alright there. questions have been made. ask more if you want. or you could alternatively shake me like a glowstick.

Happy Birthday, Crystal
So today (August 25th) marks one year since I started playing Cyberpunk 2077 and created Crystal. A year is a really long time for me to still play the same singleplayer game with no subsequent playthroughs. Things like that don't happen often, and Crystal means a world to me, so why not ramble for a bit about my memories, feelings towards the game and other stuff. Keep in mind, it's nothing more than a journal entry. Unless you know me a bit better than a typical mutual, you won't find anything of value here.
[VERY LONG POST AHEAD]
Long time ago...
I was really hyped about the game before its release in December 2020, my s/o even more than me. There were some signs that it's going to turn out disappointing, but we were keeping our hopes up. Alas, came the release date, the game hit headlines due to it's poor technical state and some broken promises. We were very upset, especially since all we had to play it on was Xbox One and low-spec by today's standards PCs. First updates showed that CDPR has much more to fix than we expected, so our hype has slowly died down.
Since then, I played through Cruelty Squad, Red Dead Redemption 2, multiple Yakuza, Devil May Cry and Resident Evil games, and I couldn't care less about the game at the start of 2022.
Why I got the game?
I only purchased Cyberpunk 2077 in May-June 2022, along with Kao The Kangaroo (2022) which, to be honest, was the main attraction for me. Both games were physical Xbox releases and I only was hyped to play Cyberpunk thanks my to lil bro, who has finished the game twice, and showed me this trailer with a beautiful cover of Never Fade Away - a song very in-line with my music taste.
Speaking as a seasoned video editor, the trailer was masterfully realized, with multiple great cuts showing off the diverse cast and some of the action. Editing, music and the scenes they chose made the entire trailer feel more like a tribute video - obviously this was made with love.
Now, I played The Witcher 3, and I knew that this game will require time and dedication from me - something I couldn't afford at the time. And despite hearing about the next gen patch (update 1.5) bringing the game to a state it should've been released in, I remained skeptical about it being good. No offense, but people (especially on Twitter) tend to overreact and talk about stuff they know nothing about. Even with recent title releases, folks just assume the latest patch made them better and fixed important issues. But then you sit with the game and a proper frame rate analysis is enough to prove such reports to be false.
My life in corpo
Before we get to August 2022, I want to provide some more context regarding the state I was in. I was working a piss-poor corpo job, which was gradually eating away my soul for longer than I'd like to admit. It wasn't fulfilling and it was (and probably still is) full of ungrateful pricks, that were coming up with issues to justify their payrolls, only to send QA on us to not detect any issues mentioned. To keep it brief, it was a very hostile work environment, that was treating people like garbage. But hey, at least they were smiling, right?
Come summer 2022, I was feeling like a shell of a human being, and I'm happy that fate decided that it's time for me get out and take care of myself. I'm not sure where would I be right now if I didn't.
So, my time at the job was coming to an end and I couldn't give less of a fuck about looking for another one. I needed some well-deserved vacation. I was supposed to work until August 31st and during these last few days I was trying to take it really easy.
Still the work was going as usual, so despite of having only few days left, my mental and physical state was as shitty as before. After each remaining day I was a walking corpse, drinking coffee at 10pm to squeeze these additional two hours from a day and try to enjoy some of my hobbies before going to sleep and repeating the cycle.
Starting the playthrough
My job is the reason why my memory is hazy on how I decided that it's time to start Cyberpunk 2077, but it's possible that it was my s/o that encouraged me to do it. She surely wanted to see the character creator with her own eyes, and was always interested in me creating OCs - something I wasn't doing often back then.
So, on August 25th 2022, I started playing Cyberpunk 2077, knowing nothing about the lore, with a sole intention of creating my character and seeing what happens. It was already late and my entire evening was sponsored by coffee, but whatever.
Crystal/Valerie/V
I'm not really sure how long it took me to create Crystal, but I spent an ungodly amount of time on perfecting her looks. I wanted her to look badass and beautiful, maybe end up being a cooler version of me. While I don't think I based her off my looks, my partner noticed that we have similar jawlines and hairstyles (well, I'm a natural blonde, which later I consciously reflected on her while creating her flashback version).
Needless to say, I instantly fell in love with her. And I know I wouldn't create a female character I wouldn't wanna date :>, but I really mean it. She was, and still is, simply perfect.
Her name was Crystal since the moment I was adding finishing touches (like makeup and tattoos), but I wasn't planning on giving her a standalone story. She was supposed to be V, with her name later revealed to be Valerie - a name I really like the sound of, and it fits her nicely. Still, in my mind her name was Crystal - and I have no idea why... she just looks like Crystal.
So here I was with my nomad V, ready to play through the prologue and possibly the rest of the game.
Playing through the game
My first evening of playing ended on me visiting Wakako (I don't even remember the reason you are supposed to go there tbh but if you played, you know these are still introductory quests) and photographing the hell out of C. My lesbian ass couldn't even be bothered to change FOV (and back then I couldn't really see the issue with default FOV screenshots - it took me months to adjust my eyes tbh) but she looked so badass. The photo mode, for industry standards, isn't that bad too, so I was really hyped to play the game, meet more people and shoot pics. While I already loved her friendship with Jackie and the way CDPR handled introduction to some of the cast, I wasn't sold on the story yet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
some of pics made on the first night :>
Then on the next day I went through The Heist and Love Like Fire, and learned that my actions as Johnny led to 2023 Night City Holocaust. Everyone who played through these quests know how full of events and emotions they are. It was 3/4am on Friday (technically Saturday) night, mind you, and I still was living mostly off coffee. That's a lot to take in for a tired mind and in some way it might have helped me immerse in Crystal's position even more. After waking up as her, with Jackie dead, and a parasite in my head that actively wants me to join him, I was just as clueless as to what the fuck happened. All I knew was that she/we need to survive. I can't let her/us die.
Let me tell you, waking up in her apartment, to the original version of Never Fade Away on the radio, was one of the most powerful moments in the game. To me, it has become a theme song for the rest of the playthrough. Leaving the apartment after getting some irl sleep was just as powerful.

the first time C left her apartment after Jackie's death and Johnny's flashback
The playthrough was going alright and I was hooked. I don't think there are many things worth talking about here. One thing worth mentioning is that I was starting to feel a strong connection with Crystal - something I've never felt to such an extent in any game. Maybe it's my background in corpo, which was only coming to an end. Or maybe I subconsciously designed her to help me with some of identity issues I had back then. I will never know for sure, but either way, she has helped me. She was exactly who I wanted her to be, who she wanted herself to be and was constantly brave and punk about it. I was feeling a growing mix of immersion and adoration as I progressed through the game.
And progress through the game I did! I finished plenty of gigs/ncpd jobs and all available side quests before starting the last mission chain (or so I thought - in the end I totally missed the vending machine one and the entirety of Kerry's questline lmao). During this time I was put out of misery of working my job, each day feeling more alive than the last, playing more and more hours of Cyberpunk 2077, shooting many pictures, enjoying my time in Night City and being Crystal.
Tumblr media
yeah it might be using default fov but it's still one of my favorite shots
Last Tapeworm, Chipping In and dying
To me, Cyberpunk 2077 was at its best when it was focusing on the relationship between V and Johnny. Last part of Tapeworm was a very powerful moment. There's no way I'll ever forget the conversation she had with Johnny in that apartment. Going from a foe that actively eating your life away, to possibly the only person that's ready to sacrifice their life to save yours, Johnny and his redemption arc are some of the biggest highlights of the game.
The conversation was of course followed by a side quest sequence started with Chipping In, with another memorable scene at Johnny's grave. Seeing how far we've come together, how many people we met, how often we were agreeing with each other - it was like talking to a friend who was right by your side for every important event in your life. And to think that only few days ago I was watching him trying to smash her head against the window...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
side quests really were the best part of the story
It's hard to say which moment was more impactful, but for me it all clicked just after the Tapeworm cutscene. If I remember it right, I spent a few minutes more in this apartment block, staring away at the sunset, listening to waves breaking Pacifica's silence. Not even sure if I'll manage to save Crystal, I wasn't ready to finish it anytime soon. I still had a lot to do and it took me an additional day to finish everything and start Nocturne OP55N1, but I was looking at the game differently than before.
It might sound dramatic, but I mean it. For the remaining duration of the game, each time I didn't hear any music, it was just silence of a big city dying from heatstroke and sandstorms, echoing conversations with people I met during my journey, and uncertainty, if I'll even make it out alive in the end. Unfortunately, I can't convey it any better, but it has to do with the atmosphere of this city and CDPR's natural talent for creating gray characters, which Cyberpunk 2077 is full of, and last but not least, my connection to Crystal.
Nocturne OP55N1
So the time has come for me to start the last mission sequence and I knew that it might go bad. The moment I was warned that it's a point of no return, I backed out and went for a walk around the city. Don't know if it was scripted, but the weather was overcast and NC was covered in fog. In my experience it's such a rare occurrence, that either I was "lucky" or it was planned. I visited Judy (VCrystal's sweetheart) for the last time, disappointed by the lack of new dialogues to start, and went back to Megabuilding H10 to see a cute heart made out of consumables by her. I went to sleep in my own bed, probably for the last time.
During my last journey to Embers, Major Crimes by Health started playing on the radio, and I got emotional. Not often games make me cry, but I really didn't want Crystal to die, or my journey to end. It really felt like I was saying goodbye to everyone and not going back.
Tumblr media
just look at the weather - shot outside of Embers, before starting Nocturne Op55N1
In the end I managed to go through the Embers section just fine, but very stressed. Then, after suffering through heartbreaking moments at Viktor's Clinic, I got to the rooftop.
Now, I'm not really sure how much time I spent there. Seems like an eternity, looking back on it. No choice felt right (and in the end, none was perfect), but I had to choose something. Unable to decide, I did something I really hate doing - I looked up endings to see which one will let me live happily with Judy... or survive at the very least.
While I didn't know it yet, I chose the happiest ending of the bunch. All I knew is that Crystal will be able to leave Night City with Judy - I didn't know that it'll be impossible to remove the chip in Mikoshi and that there's hope of achieving it in Arizona. Yes, I chose The Star ending.
I still was on the edge of my sit and really scared for C, but deep down, I knew that I probably won't get another chance to mess it up.
The ending was bittersweet and I got an instant hangover. I needed some time to come to terms with it, and make peace with me not getting the happy ending. In the end I managed to create a brief scenario where that guy Panam knows somehow manages to remove the chip, and Crystal and Judy got to live happily ever after.
I beat the game on September 4th.

Feelings Feelings Feelings
See, there's a reason I'm talking about the ending and my feelings about it in such detail. I really fell in love with Crystal. After all, it's the first time I got so immersed into a character and I can't put my finger on why exactly.
Maybe it's because it's the prettiest character I have ever created, maybe I just saw parallels in our stories or feelings, maybe I subconsciously made up all the connections in my head. Meh, it's probably a bit of everything, on top of a really good story, even if most of it is hidden in side content.
The thing is, I was in the right place, at the right time and, like I said, it all just clicked.
Back then, I was tired, angry, feeling exploited and robbed of soul. She was there to help me stop thinking about it, get revenge in a way, even if on a fictional corporation, however dumb it might sound. And the more I was thinking about her, dressing her up in cool clothing (bra + edgerunner combo ftw), the more I strived to be like her. I learned to love myself a bit more, I started dressing up for myself again, putting some makeup on just to stare at the mirror and enjoy the end result, maybe even shoot some selfies. It's almost like, on top of everything I already said, I was trying to express myself through her, which has in return influenced me. I hope that makes sense.
Crystal Hartley
Now, it took me some time to create her own story and separate her from V. And I wouldn't probably do it if it wasn't for my s/o. She was already working on her OCs story, and after many tries she finally talked me into writing my girl. The last modification date of the document with the initial version of the story is February 25th - exactly 6 months after starting the game. Since then, I made some changes and the end result can be seen here. It helped me further resonate with her and she didn't have a deadly chip inside anymore, at the cost of her not getting to know Johnny. She remained a warrior, a true badass who's not scared of anything.
Honestly she was and still is inspiring me. Being it her as V or real Crystal I wrote a few months back, she suffered hardships, she had her all-time low moment not that long ago, but she recovered and she always stands brave against all odds - knowing that in the end everything will turn out just fine.
For now, C has got some closure. She's living in Night City, she has a loving and beautiful girlfriend she's thinking about all the time, they're still doing gigs and getting in trouble together <3 While she still recovers from what happened in her nomad family, she has Elegy, Misty, Claire and Saul to help her deal with it. She's in a good place right now.
Other girls
Tumblr media
Some time ago I made EV, a girl that was originally a Cyberpunk version of my Evie from Red Dead Online, albeit I made her personality a polar opposite to Evie's. I don't have a lot about her, really - she's beautiful, photogenic, conveys vibes the best out of all of my OCs. She's probably going to end up as my canon V. She and Johnny are a match made in heaven... or hell. Actually if I put them together in the same body Night City might end up in flames.
Tumblr media
Then there's Thalia. A girl I initially only mentioned as a friendly gang member in Crystal's mega lore post. She wasn't hanging around with Crystal's group of friends, but they got really close after getting to know each other during a party. Officially, she sacrificed herself to save Crystal and the rest when they got overrun by enemies. She did survive, with help of [REDACTED] and is looking for Crystal in Night City to reunite with her and [REDACTED]. Hopefully they meet soon! It'll probably bring some unpleasant memories back, but in the end Crystal will reunite with Thalia and, with Elegy, they'll make a dream team.
Some stats!
Why not wrap it up with some interesting data!
Since I started Cyberpunk 2077:
I got all the achievements and I intend on doing the same for Phantom Liberty
according to Xbox I played the game for 268 hours* **
I made 3405 captures, taking up a whopping 36 GB of space*
421 of these captures were made during my initial playthrough
* - at the time of writing ** - including time I was afk
Conclusion
So... I just wanted to post some thoughts about Cyberpunk 2077 and, especially, Crystal. Going from a game I wasn't even that stoked to play, to an ongoing hyperfixation, that has helped me through tough times and still influences me to this very day! I even made some internet friends!
When I was working on a standalone story for Crystal, I decided that her birthday is the day I first played the game - 25th August... today.
Happy birthday, Crystal <3

Ages ago I ended up getting a bunch of indie TT RPGs and solo writing RPGs as part of a bundle, I think. Something like that.
Anyhow, while ultra tired (the weather switched and left me zzzzzzz) during the evening (and watching P5R being played on the big screen), I read/skimmed/glanced through this collection of pdfs.
Found a few that I want to use for generating prompts for daily writing during morning writing sessions (assuming I don't oversleep >_<)
What will I write using these mini solo journaling/writing RPGs?
Dunno.
I might use one of these systems to expand on a character I created a couple of weeks back -- technically she is my Nomad V for CP2077 although when I spent a week writing some backstory for her I realized hmmmmmm might want to move her to my original fiction (sff ofic). Planning on using Her Odyssey for this idea.
Another interesting mini solo journaling/writing RPG is Sentinel and I'm just using that as ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ random ideas generation, probably for my sff ofic world.
Two others -- Locomotive & Yourself -- just looks like interesting ways to prompt myself while thinking about ANY character from ANY wip -- fanfic, ofic, contemporary, sff.
.
Quite a few other indie TT RPGs/storytelling systems in my collection, mostly from a few charity bundles but others purchased over the years. Some of the interesting ones are larger and more involved. Putting those aside for now (well, lol, minus my Cyberpunk sourcebooks, for reasons ;) and just focusing on these micro games above as writing prompts that fuel at least some of my summer writing.
Also -- tbh -- thinking a lot about how to design my own system. Hm.
But that's all the braincells I have for tonight. Hopefully tomorrow will be a normal day.

Cyberpunk 2077 Prompt Event (19/30)
As usual you can read this on AO3.
Daily Prompt: April 19 - dialogue - “Maybe you should just leave now.”
Technical Prompt: none
Just a short dialogue drabble.
"Hey, if you wanna crash this party, I can respect that..." Johnny follows Val as she walks between partying 6th Street gangoons. "But why the competition? You're not even interested in that gun. Smart AR. Really?"
Val climbs up a ladder - Johnny cheats and just glitches at the top of the roof. "First - ya don't even use smart weapons. Second - ya don't like automatic weapons."
"Maybe I'm just having fun messing with them... fucking patridiots. Imagine Walker's face when he loses. Against a stranger - a merc - a girl." Val snorts.
"Damn, V. This ain't your uncle's birthday barbecue. One wrong word..." He looks around. Drunk gangoons everywhere.
Val smirks at him. "Ya worried 'bout me?" "About us." Some soldiers calling after Val and Johnny groans. "Maybe... you should just leave now..."
"Johnny, don't be a pussy, okay."
---
I wasn't in the mood for writing an argument or some other context to use "You/I should leave!" - so I had the idea of Johnny giving some advice or whatever. Plus, I wanna use more of his journal entries as dialogues and this was kinda test.
And sorry if anyone likes 6th Street. For me, the whole thing has a racist and perhaps sexist vibe. Val grew up in Heywood with Valentinos and 6th Street is definitely one of her least favorite gangs.

Stepping on its own Toes
if the player only follows the yellow dot, the game delivers a horrible experience. the interface is cyberpunk's biggest barrier to a decent gameplay experience. consider how many players play this way; that is, the journal auto-selects a nav point and the player follows it, trusting the developer to give them a good experience, but all they get is 12 hours of linear story content. and you can't turn this yellow dot off, you can't disable the journal's autoselection process, and you can't turn off the HUD. cyberpunk is only overdesigned to the extent that every component of the game steps on the toes of another component, the gameplay loops is like playing musical chairs, where solving one problem means burying your faith in a better solution.
another example of this game stepping on its own toes: the best leg cybernetic in the game (Purple Fortified Ankles) features a passive hover which disables the Hidden Dragon stealth landing passive. they are mutually exclusive features that cannot be used together because hovering, despite granting the player precise lateral air control, arbitrarily neutralizes the possibility of triggering Hidden Dragon, whereas a fall from the same height WITHOUT hover does result in the trigger. i have tested this on multiple playthroughs.
security cameras disabled from their command console will turn back on at random, but when you check the computer it says "surveillance system offline," and you LITERALLY have to turn it on and off again to return the cameras to an off state. it's difficult to understate the level of technical incompetence that went into programming this game "system."
AS for the "CONTROLS"
while tapping Y cycles through all your equipped weapons (as many as five), if you tap too quickly you'll put your weapon away. Naturally, holding Y opens a menu.
while tapping Y quickly will put your weapon away, the only way to sprint is to HOLD shift to TOGGLE sprint. naturally, you can only toggle it ON and only way to end sprint is to either run out of stamina - several minutes of holding W - or stop holding W. the sprint button only activates sprint, it cannot end sprint.
pressing X usually reloads your gun but sometimes confirms the purchase of a $77,000 sports car if you are using it as cover during combat.
tap B to crouch or skip dialogue (have fun guessing which!). tab B too quickly and you'll dodge. On the other hand, attempt to dodge too slowly and you will crouch in front of whatever you need to dodge. clicking Right Stick does nothing, it's unbound.
enemy detection HUD icon conveys zero information before an enemy pulls you into combat. reload the save, and they won't detect you. the SAVE SYSTEM is part of the gameplay loop's meta process and i firmly believe without it cyberpunk would be uncompletable. if you could save during combat, loading that save would reset all states to neutral and take the player out of combat, as though they were never in combat to begin with. loading save games not only resets ai awareness and patrol routes, it also resets all radios to the same songs and erases any breach protocol or quick hack effects on enemies, yet ironically remembers how much mana you spent on those effects. loading a save gives the player an assortment of advantages and disadvantages at every level of gameplay including RP: it even rolls a new voice actor for the fake guard phone calls. sometimes, loading a save from in combat will actually cause the load to inherit the active combat state, resulting in a tactical situation identical to that in which you were allowed to save during combat!
cars don't have health per se, but reach a critical "burning death spiral" after a given variable number of bullets has hit the car. that's right, an anti-material sniper rifle can't fire quickly enough to destroy a car in less time than a single magazine from an smg. the effect this has on gameplay is that the enemy's automatic weapons are more dangerous to your vehicle than anti-tank guns or melee (which is not a bullet and so does nothing to any vehicle ever). if the enemy is using automatic weapons, the player should avoid taking cover behind cars. armor-penetrating sniper rifles are however, mostly harmless to vehicles and can be ignored.
because cyberpunk is a mediocre 3rd person rpg masquerading as a AAA shooter, fires and flaming objects will set burning any player or npc standing within three feet of the object's model. player REGULARLY engulfed in flame trying to position V near fires for various tactical, rp or photographic reasons. npcs REGULARLY engulfed in flame investigating bodies that lie near fires or other engulfed objects. sometimes, their STATIC search pathing (patrol route) has them walking directly through campfires.

This gives a consumer for power that may or else require to be sent or stored, conserving cash as well as carbon.
Those can be more difficult to use and demand even more technical expertise, but they might additionally supply some safety advantages since there is no single target for a cyberattack. Cryptocurrencies can likewise be traded with peer-to-peer transactions. There are lots of cryptocurrency exchanges to choose from, each supplying various cryptocurrencies, pocketbook storage, interest-bearing account alternatives, as well as a lot more. Although Bitcoin has been around because 2009, cryptocurrencies as well as applications of blockchain innovation are still arising in monetary terms, as well as more usages are expected in the future. What Is Cryptocurrency: Types, Benefits, Background And Even More
In January 2021, it generated a restriction for sale to retail investors of derivative items connected to the costs of crypto assets, although they can still buy the real cryptocurrencies. To buy and sell cryptocurrencies, typically you set up an account with a cryptocurrency exchange or broker and also fund it with genuine money-- after that you can trade whichever cryptocurrencies that trade offers. To spend cryptocurrency, you need a personal trick that opens the right for you as owner to do the transaction.

The first cryptocurrency was Bitcoin, which was founded in 2009 and continues to be the most effective known today. Much of the interest in cryptocurrencies is to trade commercial, with speculators at times driving rates skyward. Among the pomposities of cryptocurrencies is that anyone can extract them making use of a computer with a Web connection. Nevertheless, mining preferred cryptocurrencies calls for significant energy, sometimes as much energy as entire countries take in. The pricey energy expenses combined with the unpredictability of mining have actually concentrated mining amongst big firms whose earnings facing the billions of bucks. According to an MIT study, 10% of miners make up 90% of its mining capacity.

NFTs can function like any other speculative possession, where you buy it and hope that the worth of it goes up one day, so you can sell it for a revenue. A Dictionary of Science Fiction Runs From Afrofuturism to Zero-G
Tumblr media
In the summer of 1987, movie audiences first met Robocop in the science fiction classic about violence and corrupt corporate power in a future, dystopian Detroit. But the title word is much older than that, going back at least to a 1957 short story by writer Harlan Ellison, in which a tentacled “robocop” pursues a character. The prefix “robo-,” in turn, dates at least to 1945, when Astounding Science Fiction published a story by A.E. van Vogt mentioning “roboplanes” flying through the sky. “Robo-,” of course, comes from “robot,” a word created by Czech author Karel Čapek in his 1920 play R.U.R.: Rossum’s Universal Robots, about synthetic humans created to perform drudge work who eventually rebel, destroying humanity.
This is the kind of rabbit hole a reader can go down in the Historical Dictionary of Science Fiction, a resource decades in the making that is now available to the public in an accessible form. Lexicographer Jesse Sheidlower started the project years ago, when he was an editor at the Oxford English Dictionary.
The OED is the best-known historical dictionary in the English-speaking world, and Sheidlower notes that it was also a crowdsourcing project long before the internet made it easy. When it was just starting out in the 19th century, he says, the OED put ads in literary magazines looking for volunteers to hunt around old books in search of particular words and their usage.
“People would mark up books, send in the notes,” he says. “To this day, it’s still how the system works to an extent.”
When the internet did arrive, the dictionary’s editors quickly took advantage. For example, Sheidlower says, at one point they were looking for early uses of the word “mutant” in the sense of a genetically mutated being with unusual characteristics or abilities. The earliest they’d found was from 1954, but they were sure earlier examples must be out there. So a freelance editor posted a query on Usenet newsgroups and quickly received an example of a use of the word from 1938.
Soon, the editors started looking for other online projects.
“This was at a time, around 2000, when there was the internet… and people were online, but it wasn’t universal like it is now,” Sheidlower says. “We wanted to do a project where people devoted to a particular field, fans, could make contributions.”
Not only were science fiction fans particularly likely to be online, but they were a valuable source of material. The world’s most prestigious libraries, where OED researchers did much of their work, generally didn’t carry back issues of pulp magazines of the mid-20th century, such as If or Amazing Stories. But many fans, it turns out had cartons full of them.
The new project, researching the history of key words used in science fiction, was written up on early blogs and sites like slashdot. Over the decade that followed, it attracted hundreds of contributors. In 2007, editor Jeff Prucher published a book based on the work, Brave New Words: The Oxford Dictionary of Science Fiction.
The project might seem to have run its course, but Sheidlower, who managed the project when he was with the OED, thought there was still work to be done on it. When he left the publication in 2013, he didn’t lose track of the project. Eventually, he got permission to revive it as a personal project. He continued to add terms and references, something made easier by two factors. First, over the past year, the forced inactivity during the pandemic gave him time to work. And second, staff and volunteers of the Internet Archive have uploaded more than 1,000 science fiction pulp magazines, making their entire contents accessible and searchable online.
Tumblr media

Elizabeth Swanstrom, co-editor of the journal Science Fiction Studies and an English scholar at the University of Utah, says the dictionary is “a fantastic resource” not just for fans but for scholars interested in the history of science and technology.
“It’s not uncommon in science fiction to see ideas that are being explored later being put into actual practice” she says.
In some cases, science fiction authors are also scientists who bring real research developments into their writing. Others alter the culture’s understanding of new technologies even without technical expertise. Swanstrom notes that the author William Gibson created the idea of cyberspace back in 1982 and helped found the cyberpunk genre, despite not knowing a huge amount about how computers work.
“The terminology that came out of that genre really shaped culture, and continues to do so” Swanstrom says.
Isiah Lavender III, a professor of English at the University of Georgia and co-editor of the science fiction journal Extrapolation, says the dictionary could help in the academic analysis of issues like the social and economic issues reflected in authors’ depictions of robots. He notes that Čapek’s original robots were essentially enslaved beings with human-like thoughts and feelings. Isaac Asimov’s Laws of Robotics, introduced in 1941, could be seen as reflecting slave codes or the Jim Crow laws that still constrained many black Americans’ lives at that time.
“Having these origin dates in mind can help a student or scholar build a framework to analyze something like the concept of the racial ‘other’ where robots and androids (as well as aliens) are stand-ins for oppressed peoples,” Lavender says.
Lavender notes that the dictionary quotations, derived largely from mid-20th century pulp magazines, don’t reflect the diversity of the science fiction world. Many current black science fiction writers, such as Nalo Hopkinson and N.K. Jemisin, don’t make an appearance.
“From the little bit that I have explored in the dictionary, it comes across as a tool that supports a monochrome future envisioned by the golden age editors of the SFF magazines,” Lavender says. “So it’s problematic in that way.”
Tumblr media

Sheidlower acknowledges that the dictionary is limited in the authors and terms it references, but he argues that this is a product of its mission: documenting the “core” vocabulary of science fiction that turns up again and again, both in stories and in the real world.
“When writers do more ‘interesting’ things, it becomes harder to include them in what is meant to be a study of the core vocabulary,” he says. “Samuel Delany is quoted a number of times when he’s writing about the usual space-travel stuff, but not much when he goes out of that range. There’s only one quote from [Delany’s dense, stylistically complex] Dhalgren, for example, but a lot from Babel-17, just as the OED has ten times more quotes from Ulysses than from Finnegans Wake.”
In general, Sheidlower says, to qualify for inclusion in the dictionary, a word must either be adopted widely within science fiction or become part of the broader culture. “Ansible”—a word for a device allowing faster-than-light communication coined by Ursula K. LeGuin—makes the cut because other authors also use it. Jemisin’s “orogenes”—people with the ability to control tectonic energy—do not because it’s a concept unique to her Broken Earth trilogy. Similarly, “Wookiee” is in the dictionary because Chewbacca is a familiar cultural figure, but dozens of other named alien species from the Star Wars universe that you can learn about on Wikipedia (or Wookieepedia) don’t merit entries.
Of course, it’s easy to find deep dives about nearly every science fiction universe on Wikipedia or elsewhere on the internet. Sheidlower says the dictionary’s mission is different.
“A dictionary’s not an encyclopedia,” he says. “There’s a reason for encyclopedias and there’s a reason for dictionaries.”
The dictionary is a streamlined way to see how terms have evolved over time, and read historical quotations that illuminate their meaning. It also links many of its quotations to the Internet Archive, where readers can see their context and even read the entire story.
Sheidlower says the dictionary, which he is continuing to update as a hobby, is still a work in progress. He anticipates expanding into related fields such as gaming, comics and anime. He also hopes to systematically add entries and quotations from books that have appeared in the ten years since the original phase of the project wrapped up. While Sheidlower has been doing most of the recent work himself, he is looking for volunteers to help out with tasks like checking citations, looking for quotations and drafting entries.
“I do hope there will be interest here,” he says. “For now, I’m still doing everything myself but the system does allow for other people doing that work.”

An Evaluation Of details
The Insider Secrets For information Revealed
The MIMS program produces leaders that work at the junction of modern technology, info, and people. While the advice and info in this journal is thought to be accurate as well as real at the date of its publication, neither the authors, the editors, nor the author could approve any type of lawful obligation for any type of errors or omissions that could have been made. Lots of people forget that they could obtain more info regarding any type of subject matter, be it search taxes property taxes information or any other on any one of the significant internet search engine. [Video Game Deep Cuts is a weekly newsletter from curator/video game industry veteran Simon Carless, rounding up the best longread & standout articles & videos about games, every weekend. This week's highlights include the magic of The Void, John Romero on the TEd tool, Hyper Light Drifter's charm, & much more.
We're here! GDC 2017 kicks off first thing on Monday here in San Francisco, and whoa, there's still lots to do, so I'll keep it brief. Oh, one useful thing - ex Game Developer magazine EIC (& excellent indie dev!) Brandon Sheffield made a super helpful post about all the cool stuff you can see with an Expo Pass at GDC this year - and if you have a bigger pass, you can see all the listed things too!
Whether at GDC or not, have fun this week, and I'll be back next weekend with an all-GDC Video Game Deep Cuts.
- Simon, curator.]
-------------------
Why Ever Stop Playing Video Games? (Frank Guan / New York Magazine) "Like so many others, I played video games, often to excess, and had done so eagerly since childhood, to the point where the games we played became, necessarily, reflections of our being. To the uninitiated, the figures are nothing if not staggering: 155 million Americans play video games, more than the number who voted in November’s presidential election."
All work and no play (Simon Parkin / Eurogamer) "Few video game protagonists keep to strict working hours, and how could they? When there's a war to win, a world to save, a lover's heart to ensnare and all the other grand and arduous problems that a game designer asks us to solve, it would be practically irresponsible to clock off a five for a pint of lager, a packet of crisps and a prestige TV box set."
The Dark Souls of News Journalism (Mega64 / YouTube) "If you don't understand this video, you really need to practice and get better at it. [SIMON'S NOTE: This is the Dark Souls of videos that mention Dark Souls.]"
The Video Game Industry Is Afraid of Unions (Emmanuel Maiberg / Motherboard / Vice) "On November 17 of last year, 450 members of the SAG-AFTRA union picketed developer Insomniac Games in Burbank, California. Some of the faces marching up and down the street with signs in hand were familiar, like Clancy Brown, who played Sgt. Zim in the movie Starship Troopers, but who, on that day, stood up for his rights as a voice actor in popular video games like Call of Duty, God of War, and many others."
"Make it Biblical:" How Vagrant Story Changed Game Localization (John Learned / USGamer) "Released that May in North America, Vagrant Story was a significant step forward for English localization... I recently had the opportunity to interview localization editor Richard Amtower and famous translator Alexander O. Smith over email on their breakthrough early work in the field and to reflect on the rise of localization as a craft that truly mattered."
It's time for cyberpunk games to remember how to be punk (Jody Macgregor / PC Gamer) "While most of the games in the genre that followed [Neuromancer & Syndicate] explored spaces somewhere in between those two extremes, there's been a tendency for them to focus on the high-tech and not the low-life. They get the cyber, but not the punk."
The Magic of the First Legend of Zelda (Mark Brown / Game Maker's Toolkit / YouTube) "The next Zelda game, Breath of the Wild, is said to be inspired by the very first game in the series. Let's revisit that seminal game, to see how Nintendo made such an intoxicating adventure."
How fantastical Atari box art taught the world what makes video games special (Nick Wanserski / AV Club) "Atari 2600 box art is well loved and rightly revered. Some of that can be chalked up to nostalgia for a system that was released in the first years of the Carter administration, but there’s no shortage of collectors who appreciate the amount of thought and technical accomplishment that went into crafting the identity of an emerging entertainment form."
What It Takes To Run A Fighting Game Tournament (Suriel Vazquez / Game Informer) "Without people like Rick Thiher, eSports tournaments would be chaos. Major events require hundreds of man-hours, months of planning, and the ability to manage dozens of moving parts deftly. Thiher runs Combo Breaker, one of the largest tournaments for fighting games throughout the year, and as attendees and players tell it, it’s a well oiled machine."
Virtual Reality’s Potential for Magic Gets Real (Brooks Barnes / New York Times) "In an ordinary office complex here, past stacked cartons of Mountain Dew and a throng of hoodie-wearing employees, sits a prototype for an attraction that Hollywood thinks will become the next entertainment craze — an offering that could mint money for its developers, throw a lifeline to struggling shopping malls and, at long last, jump-start sales of virtual reality gear."
World of Warcraft's gold rush has upended Blizzard’s economy (Daniel Friedman / Polygon) "There has been an economic panic in World of Warcraft. On Feb. 6, Blizzard changed the rules, allowing players to exchange WoW Tokens for Battle.net balance. That means that gold you earn or buy in World of Warcraft can now be used in any Blizzard property."
We tried IMAX VR, and it left us excited as hell (and weak in the knees) (Ryan Waniata / Digital Trends) "Suddenly, I’m propelled around a spiraling chute hundreds of feet above an arctic landscape before diving into a glittering river, through frosted ice caves... This isn’t Disney’s latest Star Tours ride, and it’s not exactly an arcade game, either. It’s part of an all-new take on VR from cinema magnate IMAX (that’s right, IMAX) called The IMAX VR Experience Centre."
Hyper Light Drifter: The Best Game Ever (Cool Ghosts / YouTube) "[SIMON'S NOTE: Another wonderfully deep analysis - as a YouTube commenter notes: 'So we get a "spoilers" warning but not a "this next bit will make you reflect back on your past, wasted opportunities, reflect on your future, inevitable demise and then cry inside" warning? Yeah cheers, Matt ;)'.]
The three reasons YouTubers keep imploding, from a YouTuber (Michael Sawyer / Polygon) "Allow me to extrapolate on a meme those kids today are using: “Dude, you had one job. And it looked like a really easy one.” Let’s Players, streamers or content creators, whatever you like, get to play video games and make jokes while doing so. It seems like a dream gig, so why even risk these sort of gaffes?"
Q&A With Eugene Jarvis: Cruis’n Blast And The Modern Arcade Industry (Arcade Heroes) "The last time we talked with Eugene Jarvis, CEO of Raw Thrills, it was about Jurassic Park. Fast forward to today and his company is busier than ever, pumping out Space Invaders Frenzy, The Walking Dead, Cruis’n Blast along with some other titles in development."
Meet The Woman Raising Japan’s Next Generation Of Street Fighter Champions (Cecilia D'Anastasio / Kotaku) "When I called Street Fighter pro Yuko “Chocoblanka” Momochi at 11 a.m. Japan time, her husband, the legendary Street Fighter champion Yusuke Momochi, was asleep. The husband-wife team, both Street Fighter players, had recently launched a school to train promising Japanese competitors."
Classic Tools Retrospective: John Romero talks about creating TEd, the tile editor that shipped over 30 games (David Lightbown / Gamasutra) "In recent years, retrospectives of classic games have been well received at GDC, but there have been very few stories about classic game tools... For the first article of this series, I have the great pleasure of speaking with John Romero about TEd, the tile editor that he created at id Software, which went on to ship 33 games."
VA-11 Hall-A is Not About Bartending, it's About Your Life (Jake Juliett / Field Notes For Play / YouTube) "Thusly, I enjoy VA-11 Hall-A for the thing it is - a story about living well in modern society. I also mention the woeful lack of analysis about the story."
Playing With Toys While People are Dying (Paul Kilduff-Taylor / Medium) "The work of video game developers distracts the world from problems which desperately need solutions. The culture this feeds is fundamentally depraved, the financial outcomes are random and, ultimately, nothing of worth is produced."
Rod Humble and Erica Gangsei in Conversation (Erica Gangsei / SFMOMA) "In this interview, Erica Gangsei, SFMOMA’s head of interpretive media and creator of the PlaySFMOMA initiative, talks with Humble about his personal and professional projects, and his aspirations for games and gaming."
Todd Howard Discusses Open World Multiplayer, Juggling Seven Projects, And His Hall Of Fame Induction (Matt Bertz / Game Informer) "On the eve of his induction into the AIAS Hall of Fame, we sat down with Howard to discuss his legacy, his plans for the future, and his noble crusade to get EA Sports to resurrect the NCAA Football franchise."
The future of Final Fantasy 15 (Jeremy Parish / Polygon) "That forward-looking attitude continues to guide Tabata's vision for Final Fantasy 15, as the company considers a new model for the franchise: Life for a single-playing story-based game beyond its initial release."
