A Gothic Themed Day of Thanks
Wow! A couple days till Thanksgiving here in Canada, things have just been wild here so time is getting away from me in the not the best ways.
BUT! Let’s get right into today’s topic; Gothing Up Thanksgiving!
I love cooking for my family, I love spending time with my family, and any day where I get to do both is a day I’m going to thrive on. So while I can’t decorate or plan the meal myself (since we are living in a generational household now) I will share with you the setup and menu for my DREAM Thanksgiving, Let’s go!~
Colour Scheme:
Black, Gold, and Deep Plum Black, Silver and Ox blood red Black, Rose gold and Pastel Pink Black, Antique gold and Sage green
Tablescape:
Starting with a solid coloured table cloth in one of the accent colours (plum, red, green, or pink) and laying a black lace cloth over top. A textured table runner also in black, either velvet, taffeta, or a delicately patterned black quilted runner. I would rather use charger plates than placemats so I would pick chargers in the accent colour and go with simple black dinnerware. Cutlery would be one of the metals, and I would aim for them to be a little more fancy. Napkins would also be cloth and black and the rings would be one of the metals with an accent colour as detail. As the centre display I’m thinking two candelabras in a matte black finish with pearlescent or metallic black taper candles, fall foliage and florals in our accent colours with a cloche on a stand with a delicate display of fungi, moss and bones. I’d also look into vintage coloured glass drinkware, coloured crystal, and coffee and tea cups in the accent colours all mismatched and unique.
Appetisers:
Cranberry Pecan baked Brie, Prosciutto Asparagus Puff Pastry wraps, and Since we’re Maritimers a Creamy Lobster dip with Toasted Pita, served about two hours before dinner so as not to spoil supper.
Soup/Salad:
Roasted Tomato and Red pepper soup or a Butternut Soup with cheddar and maple bacon. A small serving, and maybe a Autumn pear salad~.
Main Meal:
Now I like a good turkey like everyone else but I hate the heartburn that comes with it afterwards, I say this so that no one freaks out that I won’t be including turkey on my menu list. Instead I think a Roasted rack of lamb that the whole family chips in on would be amazing, with garlic and butter, rosemary, and maybe even some balsamic brown sugar sauce~. Garlic parmesan roasted carrots (cause let’s be honest here I am not going to coin or mash all my veggies….that is a small peeve of mine, but I digress), maple bacon brussel sprouts, caramelised sweet potatoes, and classic creamy garlic mashed potatoes. Then my grandmother’s stuffing and cranberry sauce. Maybe even a delicious mushroom gravy.
Dessert:
I adore making desserts, and on top of that I love when they are small so I can offer more than one thing, so I would go the route of making little pies such as classic pumpkin, apple, and a cherry. This would be so I could really wow my family with a bigger dessert display of a pecan pie cheesecake (cause I love cheesecake!). This way I could have fun and make tiny options for those who would want something lighter after a rather rich and larger dinner or allow everyone to try a little of everything.
Drinks:
In our house we do wine with dinner so since we’d have lamb I would get a nice red wine, there’s a sweet little place out in the valley that does amazing local wine and their Autumnal red would be so good with this imaginary dinner. After dinner it’s coffee or tea or if we’re feeling saucy a cocktail. Something like an Earl Grey Blackberry Bourbon cocktail, or a Campfire cocktail with a little roasted marshmallow.
Hopefully this didn’t make you all too hungry! To my Canadian friends and family, Happy Day of Thanks and Gratitude, and to my American friends and family, I hope this gave you some ideas! If you have any ideas of your own you’d like to share let us know and hit up our email at [email protected]! You just might see it on the blog!

four chambers buck/eddie (minor), eddie centric, an analysis of the diaz house, (home is about the people, not the space), 1.6k ______________
Eddie holds his heart in physical spaces. Frames, photo albums, ticket stubs. It’s less about the sentiment and more about the proof, evidence of the better moments, and a tangible reminder that they won’t be the last. He carries an old photo of Chris in his wallet and a yellow sticky note from Buck in the back of his phone case, scratchy, all caps writing — “Had to leave early, didn’t want to wake you up. There’s coffee on the counter for you. See you tonight.” — with a heart scribbled at the bottom. He carries his love outside his chest, but hides it in his pockets, under his shirt, and around his neck.
It’s scattered throughout the living room, his heart is in a comfortable place. The warm brown coffee table and throw pillows on the couch. Soft lights, lamps in every corner. An ash filled fireplace and charred brick, as if to say, “yes, there is life here, believe me when I say there’s life.”
[ao3 link]
Out in the living room, his love is most evident on the bookshelf. Loved ones held not by the hand, but by mahogany frames and canvas wrapped photo albums. Two albums, to be exact. The first is from Texas, from his childhood. Family photos year by year, some members disappearing, new ones flooding in, staying whether they want to or not. Some people who only continue to exist in these four-by-six slots, neatly encased in plastic, notes and dates scribbled over the back.
There’s photos of young Eddie cradling a baby Sophia, photos of Sophia and Eddie with Adriana spread across their laps, and a particularly memorable one of Eddie spoon feeding baby Adri ice cream when a baby her age definitely should not have been eating ice cream. First days of school, weekend trips, and middle school phases he’d rather forget. Newspaper cutouts of his baseball stats, team photos with trophies in hand, and senior pictures of him in his jersey. Team captain. He never really wanted it, but he accepted the offer all the same.
Shannon starts to appear around this time, prom photos together, though she wasn’t his date, just a friend of a friend with some sort of connection. Selfies taken on an old film camera from her mother, candid shots of Eddie, smiling, laughing, free, a side of him kept hidden from everyone but her. A few more photos strangers were kind enough to take for them, some strangers proving to be better photographers than others.
Another family photo, this time with Shannon in frame. Off to the side, attached only by Eddie’s arm around her waist, but in frame all the same.
A sonogram of Christopher before they had a name, engagement photos because that’s what they were supposed to do, and a single wedding picture taken from a courthouse bench.
Shannon still makes herself known in the last few pages, though her and Eddie no longer exist in the same frame. Her and Chris. Him and Chris. Chris alone. He’s off to Afghanistan.
Blank pages, accidentally skipped. A photo of him accepting the Silver Star he never wanted, added to the album despite his better wishes, alongside a handful of army memories he’d rather not look back on.
It’s in his heart, all the same.
The last few pages are filled with the only pictures Eddie took himself. Every one, every single one is of Chris. The time lost in those skipped pages finding its way back into the album, one day at a time. First days of school, weekend trips, and all his childhood interests coming and going in phases.
The second photo album carries his second chances. It’s not a memento from Texas or a gift he’d rather not receive, no. This one he chose all on his own. He chose Los Angeles, he chose Chris, he chose the 118, and with them, he chose a fresh start, a blank page. Family photos of a different kind.
Second page, third slot down, Buck makes himself known. He first exists in Eddie’s heart somewhere along the bottom shelf. Three, four, five pages in, Buck never disappears. In the firehouse, after work, trips to the zoo, he never disappears. Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Years, he never disappears. The couch, dining room, and kitchen, Buck never disappears.
It always comes back to the kitchen. Before there was a home, there was a kitchen and dirty dishes. Eddie washes the dishes by hand, one by one. Buck sits on the countertop, stacking dried plates, sorting cutlery in the drawers. He leaves every cabinet open — “it’s way more efficient, Eddie,” — and carries three mugs in each hand.
His heart skips in the kitchen. Flinging soap bubbles while rinsing plates, stealing from simmering saucepans on the stove, his breath hitches when Buck swipes a thumb across Eddie’s cheek, brushing away the suds. His breathing stops altogether when his hand lingers a moment too long.
New beginnings are also found in the kitchen, heavy palpitations bleeding from the sink onto the dining table. Anticipation exists between the tiles, melting the glue he’s used to desperately hold himself together. Buck plays music while he cooks, varying from swing to classic rock. On the good days he sings, out of key, but he sings. He whistles along with the guitar or the saxophone or velvety voices he doesn’t dare to replicate. Buck dances too, waiting for songs to end and timers to ring.
Anticipation flooded the room when he asked Eddie to dance along, a soft blues tune playing over the speaker. Hand to the waist, to the shoulder, hand draped in gentle hand. It was an easy choice; Buck leaned in and he leaned back, holding Eddie like he would never have the chance to do it again, kissing him like there was no sweeter air in the world. The first, “I love you,” was breathed against the counter, just above a whisper. “I always have,” followed shortly behind.
The brightest piece of his heart is held in Christopher’s hands. Rainbow carpets and terrariums, posters plastered on every wall, solar systems and galaxies hanging above. Buck pinned the mobile to the ceiling, Earth, Venus, and Mars dancing around each other, glowing as the room fades to black. The planets spin and spin just above his bed. It makes sense, really, that Buck would hang the stars for Chris.
Eddie didn’t decorate his room, unlike the rest of the house. No, the color, the light, the books lining every shelf, all chosen by Chris, constantly shifting as his interest wean and wane. He’s more than willing to provide, because who is he to deny an action figure on the dresser or plant on the windowsill?
His heart is full with Chris. His heart is empty in his bedroom. Everything Eddie has he gives to Chris. (Where else would it go?)
Barren walls and flat sheets. Empty walls, empty frames. Clock on the nightstand, a lamp on either side, nothing more. A dresser, a closet, it’s a bedroom, nothing more. Most days the curtains are drawn. Most days the door is kept shut. It’s best to keep this hidden, best to leave it bare. He had a rug once. Never managed to unroll it.
It functions as a space, that’s all he needs. Eddie sleeps, and sometimes he dreams. Sometimes he wakes in a sweat, sometimes his hands shake until he’s too exhausted to shake anymore. He resorts to self soothing then; counting ceiling tiles that don’t exist and pacing about the room until holes bleed through his socks.
Buck moved from the apartment to the couch, and eventually made his way to the bedroom. They started out two feet apart but always woke together, somehow making contact and swearing it meant nothing. Even in his sleep, he finds his way to Buck. (Of course it means something).
He first kisses Buck in the kitchen. He kisses him again in the bed. His bed, their bed. He sleeps with his head against Buck’s chest, this time with intent, counting beats instead of ceiling tiles as he sleeps, no sweeter lullaby to be heard. He sleeps through the night, no dreams at all. Buck opens the curtain when he wakes up. Eddie leaves it that way.
The changes are subtle at first, and Buck plays it off like it’s all accidental. “Your room has the best sunlight,” he says, moving plants from the kitchen to the dresser. The ivy cascades down the sides and the cactuses bloom in the new light. In the silence, his heart begins to beat again.
Buck covers his own nightstand with receipts and chargers and photos and reminders. “Printed this for myself,” he claims, filling a picture frame with him and Eddie and Chris, “but I made an extra copy.” He leaves it on Eddie’s side of the bed. It’s less and less barren each day.
The rug under the bed is a welcomed addition. Soft and full, Eddie doesn’t question where it came from. A mirror makes its way to the wall. He can count his scars in the reflection; two in the shoulders, one on the hip. Wrist and thigh, hand and head. With each day the sight is more bearable.
Buck ripped off the sheets, the dark navy sheets, and swapped them out for something brighter. He claims they’re softer, claims they’re more breathable, though Eddie knows the truth, the truth being that they’re lighter on his chest and make his heart beat even. One, two, three, he can climb out of bed each morning a little easier.
“Good morning,” Buck whispers, and Eddie, half awake, half dreaming, feels his lips brush against his temple before moving to the kitchen. One beat, two beats, three, he can climb out of bed each morning a little easier.

Blackout Part 1
Tumblr media
Summary: When a storm blows in just before finals it throws life into chaos with no power. But the trio’s home becomes a refuge in the storm. A place of warmth and happiness where everyone can gather to ride out the storm and enjoy some time together. Seonghwa and his love, Yeosang, find some special time together. A moment of respite in the storm.
Word count: 6.6k
Content warnings: fluff and smut, this time featuring Seonghwa and Yeosang, sex (m/m), a bathtub, the stress of finals and a blackout across town. Mostly happy bonding with friends and partners by candlelight.
Tumblr media
‘Twas the weekend before finals when all through the city, not a building had power, it was a true pity. An ice storm had blown through late on Thursday coating everything with half an inch of ice bringing down power lines and tree branches. Classes were canceled on Friday and departments mailed out plans for finals, with professors encouraged to make finals something people could take at home if possible to leave halls that might need to be powered by generators for those that absolutely had to take tests on campus.
The dorm halls and residences were dark but at least heated, however, with no promise that power would be restored soon, people were eager to go home for the holidays as soon as possible. Students who were given the option for take home or online files were all making plans to head home early. Those who weren’t were forced to go to pick up meals from the one of the few functional cafeterias on campus. No one was happy with the situation.
In their little house near campus she, Mingi, and Yunho were happy to be in their cozy little home together. They were especially thankful for their fireplace and for the gas stove the place had come with, since it meant the interruption in power hadn’t given them nearly as much trouble as it was giving most of their friends. With the fridge and freezer down, they moved the frozen foods out to the backyard. The weather had remained around freezing since the storm and it would keep it as well as the freezer would have. The things that needed to be kept cool but not frozen, they kept in the little entry porch in a cooler that was just enough to keep things from freezing but was plenty cold. All in all, it was actually pretty nice, minus the fact that they couldn’t watch anything on TV and were only keeping only one phone on at a time. Their travel batteries had been real lifesavers actually.
On Friday evening they learned that Yunho’s chemistry class was keeping their scheduled practical final on Tuesday which he needed to stay for. Mingi’s math teacher, an old crotchety tenured professor, insisted on having an in person final for his 200 + person introduction course. He didn’t trust people not to cheat, nor did he trust the newfangled online tests some people in the department had started using. Luckily that was scheduled for Monday afternoon so it wouldn’t keep them there any longer than Yunho’s. She was lucky and had already been sent her four finals she had left for her classes and was hoping to have them done before they drove home for the long Christmas holiday.
At around 7 that Friday Yunho’s phone rang. It was a frazzled and stressed out Hong Joong wondering if he might be able to come and study with Yunho at their place. With no power he had been studying as much as he could during the daylight hours and making due with a hanging flashlight he had set up in the evening. He grumbled about not being able to make any of the food they had and being stuck with sandwiches for days with no way to cook in the house.
“We can cook here if you want to bring stuff to make some food here,” Yunho offered.
“You can cook?” Hong Joong perked up on the other end of the phone. “Do you have power?”
“No we just have a gas stove and oven,” Yunho explained.
“Wou...would you mind if I came to stay for a little while?” Hong Joong questioned hopefully. “I can bring food. I also have a solar charger we can share to charge phones and stuff. Also a radio I’ve been using to keep me sane.”
“Oh yeah sure, that would be fine,” Yunho agreed. As he finished speaking, he heard a shuffling, and then Hong Joong make an exclamation of objection.
“You can cook?” Came the tight voice of Seonghwa over the line.
“Ye...yes…” Yunho replied slowly.
“Can Yeo and I come study there?” Seonghwa sounded tense and close to begging. “I will cook food and I am good at it. Please. I miss warm food and I want to get out of this tiny dark room. I will do anything.”
“Sure,” Yunho laughed. “You guys can come, too. Maybe bring some candles or light as well as some food to make.”
“Thank you,” Seonghwa’s voice was full of relief as he said it. “I have to call Yeo and tell him to meet me. We will bring whatever we can. Ugh, if only one of our dorms just had one of the functioning cafeterias, I could bear to stay there. I just wish we weren’t going to have to come back and forth.”
“Do you mind if they stay for the weekend?” Yunho covered the mic and whisper asked the other two. When they nodded he brought the phone back to his ear and offered, “You guys could stay the weekend. Just come and bring whatever you need to study and clothes for a couple of days.”
“Seriously?” Seonghwa said, unsure if he could trust what his ears had just heard. It was too good to be true.
“Yeah,” Yunho confirmed. “We have room and it will be good to have everyone together in one place for studying. It will be a big help if you cook and bring extra food, so...yeah, you guys are welcome.”
“Thank you,” Seonghwa said gratefully before passing the phone back to Hong Joong.
“We can stay over?” Hong Joong asked, a note of extra hope entering his voice.
“Yeah, bring what you need,” Yunho confirmed. “Or at least what you can. We will make the best of this studying time and time to get the finals done before the holiday.”
“You guys are the best,” Hong Joong laughed. “Okay, we will see you soon.”
“So we’ll be having some guests it seems,” she said, setting her study material aside for the moment. “Guess that means I should clean up a little.”
“I’ll help,” Mingi offered, closing his math book for the moment.
“Me, too,” Yunho turned off the screen of his phone and set it on the coffee table. The boys redressed their beds to give the guests places to sleep while she cleaned up a little in the kitchen, doing the last of the dishes and checking what they had in their cabinets, thinking about what they might need. Yunho, when he was done making the bed, went out and grabbed more wood for the fireplace. It was starting to get dark and, while the furnace was keeping the house warm, the light and extra coziness it was giving the house was making the blackout much more pleasant.
They had decorated the house for Christmas after getting back from Thanksgiving with their families. They had bought a tree from one of the lots, strung it with colored lights, and bought a cacophony of colorful glass balls and bangles. It wasn’t the sort of tree that would have made it into one of those home life magazines but it was homey. Off on one side of the tree Yunho had eventually discovered a trio of special ornaments she had bought and tucked off to the side. They were little enamel picture frames, each with a photo of one of them, with Our First Christmas Together and the year written on the back. Yunho was in a bright blue oval shaped frame that had a sunburst sort of design under the enamel that caught the light when the tree was lit. Mingi was in a bright red square frame that had a sort of scaled or feathered sort of pattern that seemed to shimmer in the light. Hers was purple and round with little gems that dangled off the bottom. He wasn’t sure how long they had been there before he noticed, but he made sure to bring it to Mingi’s attention when he noticed it. They both loved it and wished they had thought of the gesture first, but of course she had done it. Silently they promised, next year they would surprise her, but this year they could both still get her something amazing for Christmas.
Mingi had gotten her an antique style pearl choker with a small square panel in front that had a starburst pattern in silver and crystals. He liked the idea of her wearing it, like a mark that she was his, even if everyone didn’t know it. He hadn’t given it to her. He was still deciding if he wanted to give it to her before they went home or save it for when they got back. There were still days to decide, so it stayed tucked far back in one of the drawers in his bedroom, waiting for the right time.
Yunho had bought her a hair comb from a local antique shop. He had gone expecting to get her something simple like earrings but had laid eyes on the ornate, two pronged, silver comb and knew it was what he needed to get her. She often twisted her hair up into easy buns on the back of her head, held there with one or two simple wooden hair sticks she used. This comb, with its gorgeous rococo style curved decorative plate would look perfect sitting in her hair. It was something she would use, which meant he would get to see his gift on her often; just a little something saying she was his.
They had gotten each other something as well. Yunho had bought Mingi a new, expensive pair of Bluetooth headphones he could use when he needed some isolation to keep his mind on studying. His last pair had started to wear out, the battery only lasting three or four hours these days. The new ones were better and would be more forgiving for his usual forgetfulness when it came to putting them on the charger when he was done.
Mingi had bought Yunho a new suit set including dress shirt, jacket, pants, tie, and pocket square. Yunho had noticed that he had outgrown his last set over Thanksgiving and knew that he needed to get something soon but had been putting it off due to school. Mingi had gotten him a steel grey suit with white button up and sky blue tie and pocket square. Honestly, he couldn’t wait to see him in that and really wanted to come up with some date, some occasion to see him in it. The color would go perfectly with his current blond locks he had gotten lightened even a shade brighter during his last visit to the hairdressers. That he was going to give Yunho before he went back home for the holidays, as there was a good chance he might have a reason to wear it then. As long as he brought it back home, since Mingi was dying to take him out in it with their girl.
Before long the house was really ready for guests and for more studying. She pulled out a few more candles and put them on the dining room table to light when people went there to eat or study, whatever might be needed. They had been concentrating the light in the living room, with a few candles around the room and a couple of wall sconces lit that she happened to have. They were remarkably good at lighting the room with their mirrored backs and high hanging light. She had bought them because she liked them, not knowing they would come to be genuinely useful and not just frivolous pretty things she just enjoyed having.
A little after eight, Hong Joong arrived at their door with a heavy bag in tow behind him, packed with school things, clothes, food, and other useful supplies he thought he could provide. He came into the house, grateful to be in the warmth again after battling icy sidewalks and freshly falling snow that was now coming down. It took him a moment after he took off his coat to take in the room he had entered. The whole place just oozed cozy warmth with its cheery decoration and surprising brightness given that he had been making due with a hanging flashlight.
“Wow,” was all he said when he looked up, taking it all in.
“Welcome to our home,” she greeted him with a hug, helping him take his things into the room. “Is there anything that needs to be kept cold in your stuff?”
“Oh yeah,” he shook his head, bringing himself back to the moment. “This stuff here is perishable.” He pulled out a bag with cheese, milk, meat, condiments, and a few other odds and ends he had that he and Hwa had decided he should take to be useful. “I also have this stuff that needs to be cooked but doesn’t need to be kept cold,” he said, passing a bigger bag to Mingi, who was standing nearby. “I think Hwa and Yeo are going to bring more but this is what I was tasked with bringing.”
“Thank you and make yourself at home,” She said, walking off to put the perishables in the makeshift fridge. “You can take one of the boys’ rooms. The beds have been made. You can leave your stuff in there and pick a place to study. We can do something about food when everyone gets here.”
“You guys are lifesavers,” Hong Joong said as he dragged his bag back towards the bedrooms.
It didn’t take long for Seonghwa and Yeosang to arrive at their front door, laden with food and other things they needed to study and make their place home for a short time. Seonghwa looked like he was ready to cry when he saw the cozy and welcoming interior of their house. After having faced the possibility of having the stress of studying in the dark with bad food, the relief was fresh and sharp.
“I am going to be in your debt for eternity,” he said, dropping his things near the door and drawing a slightly surprised Mingi into a tight hug.
“You’re welcome,” Mingi replied with an amused laugh and a gummy smile.
“This place is really nice,” Yeosang said, taking everything in with a slow scan of the room. “You even have a fireplace...wow.”
“You can put yourselves in the room that Hongjoong didn’t take,” Yunho instructed. “Is there food we need to deal with?”
“Yes but don’t worry about it,” Seonghwa picked up their other things and prepared to take things to the bedrooms. “Let me put things away and then I am going to deal with food. Where am I…” Yunho pointed down the hall and the two boys happily made their way back to take the unoccupied room. They re-emerged from down the hall with Seonghwa’s arm around his boyfriend’s shoulder and one of Yeosang’s slung loosely around his waist in return. Hong Joong appeared behind them, his arms laden with study material.
“Okay,” Seonghwa gave Yeosang a kiss on the side of his head before heading to get the food things he had left near the door. “Show me the kitchen.” Yunho gave an amused chuckle and led him through the wide doors that opened into the kitchen. Seonghwa looked like he was tempted to hug the stove when he laid eyes on it. He was almost in despair at the idea of not having ‘real’ food between now and finals. He instead settled for hugging Yunho again before he set about pulling everything out he had brought so that it could be organized and put away. Yeosang helped to gather the things to be put into the cold as Seonghwa decided what to cook for everyone.
“Is beef stew okay for everyone?” He asked after having taken stock of all the ingredients. Everyone gave affirmative answers and Seonghwa set to work preparing everything to go into the dinner. Yeosang wandered into the kitchen to help and she joined them shortly thereafter, making quick work of the chopping, peeling, and the searing. Soon, all that was left was the hour or so everything needed to simmer in the large pot.
With dinner sorted, everyone settled in around the living room with their books and notes to study. She settled in near the fireplace next to Yunho and Mingi, wrapping herself in a blanket as she pulled out the psych final she had decided to work on first. Yeosang and Seonghwa settled themselves on the smaller loveseat, Yeosang tucked in between his boyfriend’s spread legs as they both studied from large textbooks. Hong Joong stretched out on the couch, his head near the end where Yunho was seated near the fireplace, allowing him to poke at him occasionally as they both studied the material for their final.
By the time dinner was declared done by an ecstatically happy Seonghwa, everyone was ready to take a break from their studying. They served the stew in whatever dishes worked, not having quite enough bowls to go around. She and Hong Joong made do with a couple of large mugs, which were actually much easier to carry into the living room than the bowls. With the plentiful light and warm atmosphere, they decided it was the best place to eat.
“How many finals do you have?” Yeosang asked the room in general as he took a bite of the delicious stew.
“Three,” Mingi replied. “But only one has to be done on campus. The rest were changed to take home stuff given the circumstances.”
“I have four, but they are all take home,” she followed up. “I’m just hoping I can get them all done before we drive home for the holidays.”
“Oh that’s right,” Seonghwa waved his spoon in the direction of the trio. “You guys all came from the same place, didn’t you? Are your families all friends or something?”
“Sort of,” Yunho scrunched up his face a little as he rolled the explanation around in his mind. “They all know each other, but mostly because we know each other, not the other way around.”
“So then how did you all meet,” Yeosang asked as he leaned against his boyfriend’s shoulder.
“Mingi threw us all in the water at summer camp.” Yunho said with a wide grin, successfully eliciting the reaction he hoped from the other boy.
“Hey,” Mingi objected, putting one hand on his hip as he spoke. “I did not...okay I sort of did. But it wasn’t like it sounds.”
“He got better with the canoes,” she noted with a mischievous glint in her eyes. “Especially when there wasn’t the threat of ducks.”
“Come on,” Mingi pursed his lips and grumped at the two of them.
“Imagine if you hadn’t,” Yunho reached out to him, stroking his cheek softly. “Our girl might be with San and...well...we would probably be alone or something. Oof, not a pleasant thought really.”
“I guess we really owe those ducks,” she joked, falling into peels of laughter at the thought. Beside her Mingi huffed, pulling her into his lap for a kiss that ate her laughter. Yunho scooted over, wrapping his arms around both of them with the warmest expression on his face.
“I think you had to be there,” Yeosang faux whispered to his boyfriend, causing him to give a snort of laughter and slap his shoulder playfully.
“I am so single…” Hong Joong sighed, his eyes looking between the two couples who were there in front of him. He tucked into his soup with a shake of his head, glad to be there but also wishing he had someone to bring with him, like his roommate did. Seonghwa glowed when he was around Yeosang, or Sangie, as he often called him, getting groans and eyerolls from those near enough to hear it. He and Hwa had met in a dance class together last year and the two had been nearly inseparable since then.
They finished the stew and Hong Joong, Yunho and Mingi volunteered for dish duty since they hadn’t helped with cooking. Even though it was nearing 11 at that point, most of them wanted to press on with studying.
“Hey love, can you bring in the big bottle of cider?” Yunho asked Mingi as they finished the dishes. Mingi nodded and headed to the porch to bring in the gallon bottle of cider they had bought a few days ago. While Mingi retrieved that, Yunho scoured the cabinets to find the packet of mulling spices they had somewhere.
“Here you go,” Mingi set the heavy glass bottle on the counter, pressing a quick kiss to the side of Yunho’s neck, causing the other boy to blush and giggle. “What are you making?”
“I thought some cider would be good as a sort of desert,” Yunho shrugged.
“Mmmm, good idea,” Mingi moved to hug him from behind, tucking his head in on Yunho’s shoulder as he watched him work. “Warm and cozy.”
“It’s kind of fun having everyone here,” Yunho noted as he lit the burner under the pan. “Don’t you think?”
“Mmm,” Mingi agreed. “It’s more fun than just studying alone would have been. And Seonghwa can cook; that stew was delicious.”
“Maybe we can have them over more often,” Yunho suggested, swaying in the arms of the other boy.
“Sometimes,” Mingi agreed. “I still want time just with the two of you.”
“Of course,” Yunho turned his head and gave him a peck on the cheek. “Time with you is the best part of my day.”
“Yeah?” Mingi asked shyly, flashing him a gummy grin. Yunho made a mhmm sound and moved to put his arms around his shoulders and took his lips in a slow, lazy kiss.
“Awww, am I missing all the fun?” She teased as she joined them in the kitchen, having come to see what had been keeping them since the dishes were done.
“Yes,” Mingi teased, looking at her over his shoulder, not letting go of the man in his arms.
“Poor me,” she pretended to pout. “Good thing I came to check, I suppose.”
“Come here,” Yunho beckoned, pulling slightly out of Mingi’s arms, enough to lift her onto the counter next to them. Mingi took her lips and Yunho nibbled down along the side of her neck below her ear. She gave a moaning giggle into Mingi’s mouth, shivering at the tickling sensation being sent through her.
The hiss of the cider starting to simmer in the pan brought them apart. They portioned the cider into mugs and took them out to the others in the living room. Hong Joong took his mug in his hands, clasping it joyfully and breathing in the fallish scent with a contented grin.
“I forgot how good this stuff could be,” he sighed.  “I swear I haven’t had this in years and I don’t know why.”
“Mmmm,” Seonghwa hummed happily in agreement. “I am loving this all but I am starting to get tired. I think I am going to have to shower and get ready for bed after this. I am pretty sure that the words are just passing through my brain and leaving no mark at this point.”
“Well we have showers and hot water,” she offered. “We even have a nice bathtub if you want to use it.”
“Oh man, it has been so long since I had a bath,” Seonghwa sighed.
“You and Yeo could, uh, share it,” Yunho suggested. “It’s big enough for two if you want to relax a little before you head to sleep.”
“Really?” Seonghwa sat up straighter and sent a look to his boyfriend. It had been a while since they had a place to relax together that wasn’t one of their dorm rooms when their roommates happened to be out.
“If Mingi and I can fit in it, you two should be just fine.” Yunho chucked. “I’ll show you where it is.”
Seonghwa hopped up, taking Yeosang by the hand, and followed Yunho down the hall. They made their way through the shared bedroom to the master bathroom, candles in hand. Yunho pulled out a couple of towels for them and showed them where they kept the bath bombs and scented oils they used in the bath. They thanked him for the help and for the accommodations and let him go on his way. Seonghwa started the bath while Yeosang got their toothbrushes and pajamas from their room for them to change into when they were clean and ready to go to sleep.
The candle light danced off the pale tiles and glinted off the chrome fixtures. The room was warm and cozy as snow fell outside the small distorted window high up on one wall. The sill had a growing line of snow that was building on it as it continued to fall, deafening the world around them.
Seonghwa stripped his clothes off and slipped into the warm water he had scented with rose. The steam rose from the surface of the water, wafting the scent into the air with it. He shut off the water just before Yeosang returned, clothes and toiletries tucked under his arm.
“Getting started without me,” he tsked, setting them down on the counter by the sink.
“Just making sure it is perfect,” Seonghwa retorted, sending him a tempting smile. He slid himself under the water, dampening his hair and face in the warm water. He stretched out his hand to his boyfriend, inviting him in with a hungry look through his damp eyelashes. “Come in, the water is fine.”
Yeosang smiled down at him as his hands went to the hem of his shirt, slowly lifting it off over his head. Seonghwa bit his lip as he looked at the smooth stretch of skin he exposed in the flickering light of the room. He could never get enough of him. His slim, muscular body, the soft ripple of his abs that ended in the softest wisp of a happy trail.
Yeosang loved the feel of Hwa’s eyes on him as he undressed. The way he looked at him made him feel like the sexist thing on the planet. There was always a fire in them; an unsated thirst. He loved it, so he took his time as he slowly unfastened the button on his jeans and slid the zipper down. His eyes watched the flash of emotions that crossed Seonghwa’s face as he languidly slid his pants and underwear past his hips and thighs before letting them drop and stepping out of them.
He walked over to the tub and slid into the water, sitting himself on Seonghwa’s waiting lap, looping his arms around his boyfriend's broad shoulders. The water lapped lightly around their chests, filling the near silence of the room. Yeosang let his gaze meet Seonghwa’s with an unbroken intensity, not needing words to tell him how much he wanted him.
Seonghwa leaned forward letting his hands reach up from behind to hold Yeosang’s shoulders as he pressed a kiss to his chest. His lips brushed along the soft skin, feeling their way over the lean muscles of his pecs and up to his collarbone.
“It’s been too long,” Seonghwa whispered against him as Yeosang let his head fall back, allowing his lover more access.
“It’s only been a week,” Yeosang gave a breathy chuckle as he felt the other boy’s lips follow the line of his pulse up the side of his neck.
“That doesn’t count,” Seonghwa protested, one hand traveling up to tangle in the soft blond locks of Yeosang’s hair.
“Oh?” He asked breathlessly.
“Sneaking something in during the twenty minutes it takes for Hongjoong to go get something to eat from downstairs definitely doesn’t count,” Seonghwa clarified sternly, before nipping the soft skin just below Yeosang’s ear.
“I thought you liked the thrill of maybe getting caught,” Yeosang teased. “The possibility of someone seeing you fall apart with just my hand down your pants.”
“Maybe a little,” Seonghwa admitted, his lips quirking into a half smile. “But how could I have said no with all that teasing you were doing all day. Sitting in my lap and grinding your wonderful little ass on me every time you knew someone wouldn’t catch you. Ugh, tease.”
“Like you were any better,” Yeosang pointed out, his hands moving to splay over Seonghwa’s chest. “Slipping your hand in my pocket. You knew that hole was there before you did it, too.”
“That will teach you to put off fixing holes in your clothes,” Seonghwa laughed before bringing Yeosangs lips down to his. Their kiss began as a slow, sensual exploration of their mouths that slowly became more heated as Yeosang pressed Hwa’s head back. He raised himself slightly onto his knees until he loomed over him, leaving Seonghwa breathless and at his mercy.
Yeosang pulled back from the kiss and looked down at the wanton face of his boyfriend. He loved seeing him like this. His assertion that what they had gotten in last week ‘didn’t count’ was pretty fair he decided. A quick shared handjob they could sneak in with the risk of getting caught might be fun, but he loved to see the pleasure dazed face he could bring to him even before he really touched him. He loved taking his time with him, tasting the saltiness of his skin and the sweet flavor of his lips.
“Can I make love to you tonight?” Yeosang asked, kissing his way across Seonghwa’s beautifully high cheekbones.
“Make love to me now,” Seonghwa urged.
“Here?” Yeosang gave a low chuckle. “In someone else’s bathroom?”
“Turnabout is fair play,” He snorted, thinking of the first time he had met those three.
“Mmmm, true,” Yeo admitted, letting one hand sink down to brush the pad of his thumb over the tip of Hwa’s growing erection. “Switch places with me?”
“Sure,” Seonghwa nodded and twisted himself to allow Yeo to sit with his back against the edge of the tub and move him into his lap. Hwa felt his boyfriend’s erection brush against his inner thigh as they switched places, sending a shiver through him. He loved when Yeo was inside him as much as he loved the times the roles were reversed. When he was in his lap, he could look down at that beautifully sculpted face with it’s perfectly symmetrical features. He would never get tired of those warm eyes looking up at him.
Hwa brought his face down to Yeo as he felt the other boy's hands slowly make their way down along his back to the curve of his ass. His fingers brushed over the muscles there, enjoying their softness as he gave them a quick squeeze. With excruciating slowness, he moved the tip on one finger to brush over the pucker of muscle nestled between the soft cheeks.
Hwa let out a sigh and ground himself forward at the sensation of the tentative touch. He knew it wasn’t reluctance that slowed the touch of his lover, but the enjoyment he got from drawing out the moment; from the pleasure he caused with his teasing. When they had the time, there was nothing Yeosang loved more than bringing Hwa near to tears with his teasing before he would take him; waiting for that moment of desperation at his teasing before he would do as he asked. Seeing the hunger and desire twist his features into a mask of craving always gave Yeosang that pang of power and pleasure.
“Tell me how much you want me,” Yeo prompted, massaging Hwa’s entrance as he did.
“I need you in me tonight,” Hwa obliged, letting his desire be on full display as he spoke. “I need this moment this week. It’s been so hard and I just want a moment that is just you and just me.”
“I wish I could always take you into my arms like this,” Yeosang admitted as Hwa leaned in to brush his lips over his forehead. “I want to hold you as we go to sleep every night.”
“If only one of us didn’t have a roommate,” Hwa lamented with a sigh. Much as he loved Hong Joong as a friend, lately he had been wanting more space. He wanted privacy and the freedom to do what he wanted, when he wanted.
“Maybe next year we can get our own place, like this one,” Yeosang proposed as he finally pushed one finger inside.
“You want to live with me?” Hwa gave a shuddering sigh and let his head fall slightly back at the sensation.
“Yeah, I want to be with you more,” Yeosang conceded. “I’d love to be with you every night and make love to you in the morning.”
“That sounds like heaven,” Hwa smiled and pressed his lips to Yeosangs.
“Is that a yes,” Yeo questioned, broadening the circles he was making as he worked Hwa’s body open for his entry.
“Yes,” Seonghwa nodded, cupping Yeosangs cheeks in his wet hands and kissing him more deeply. Their tongues battled slowly as Yeosang worked another finger in, then scissored gently to make sure his lover's body was ready for him.
When Hwa whined with need, Yeosang finally sunk down slightly more in the water and positioned himself to enter Hwa. He let the other boy work himself down his length, going as fast or as slow as he wanted as he took him in. When he was finally all the way down, Hwa let out a breath he had been holding, relishing the sensation of Yeo so deep inside him.
“Fuck, you always feel so good around me,” Yeosang groaned, his hands coming to grip the other boy’s narrow hips.
“I love the way you fill me,” Hwa returned, gripping the sides of the tub for leverage as he prepared to move. He threw his head back and arched as he slowly began to move himself up and down. Yeosang could only admire the smooth, broad expanse of his lover's chest as he moved. In the candlelight he looked divine, droplets of water sparkling over his skin as they dripped down its smoothness.
“Have I told you today that you are beautiful?” Yeo breathed quietly.
“Next to you, I hardly compare,” Seonghwa leaned in to press his forehead to the other boys, slightly increasing his speed as he moved himself up and down his length. Yeosang’s hand went to encircle the turgid length of Hwa’s erection wanting to bring him as much pleasure as he could.
Hwa’s movements stuttered at the increased sensation, he shuddered and let out a little moan. “Do you think you’ll last longer than me if you do that,” He challenged, his eyes locking on Yeo’s hungrily as he continued to move.
“Yeah I think you’ll come first,” Yeo set his chin with an angle of defiance as he looked up a Hwa with hooded eyes.
“I guess we’ll have to see, won’t we,” Hwa breathed, moving faster and taking him as deeply as he could. The room was filled with the sound of their breathing and the sloshing of the water around them. It was a battle of wills between them and there would be no losers. They both threw themselves into the sensations of pleasure, both the giving and the taking. For the moment there was no one else, nothing else. They were the pleasure and the tension itself.
“I think you’re going to win,” Hwa shuddered, his knuckles going white with the strength of his grip on the curved edges of the tub.
“Then cum for me,” Yeosang demanded with a soft confidence as he expertly moved his hand over Hwa in the way he knew he loved. He watched Hwa’s face with rapt attention as his face and body contorted with the almost painful rise of pleasure he was riding. When his orgasm hit, he paused in his movements, half collapsing forward as his arms and legs quivered from pleasure and exertion. He let out a broken moan, his head lolling forward as he lost himself in the sensation and burst of peaceful satisfaction that filled him up as it passed.
“Can I…” Yeosang asked for permission to move. Seonghwa nodded and braced himself as he tried to catch his breath. Yeo gripped his hips harder and thrust himself up into Hwa as his muscles fluttered around him. He was close and it had been a near race to their finish. It only took a few minutes of his enthusiastic thrusts for him to find his own pleasure, emptying himself into Hwa’s body, loving the way it held him in its warm depths as waves of pleasure rode him.
Seonghwa pressed his lips to the corner of Yeosang’s mouth as he panted, lying limp in the bath beneath him. He looked so beautiful, damp and exhausted by pleasure.
“We definitely need a place with a bathtub.” Seonghwa said as he held Yeo’s face between his hands, his thumbs stroking his cheekbones, leaving droplets of water in their wake.
“Liked this that much, did you,” Yeosang let out a tired scoff and cracked one eye open.
“If I had known you looked this good wet,” Seonghwa joked. “I would have gotten you into a shower or tub months ago.”
“See, you promise that now,” Yeosang gave a dramatic sigh, mischief sparkling in his eyes. “But watch us move in together and have you get bored of me since you can have me anytime you want.”
“Please,” Seonghwa scoffed, and smacked Yeosang’s chest lightly. “As if I would be so fickle.”
“Promise?” Yeosang smiled up at him, pushing a lock of hair off the other boy’s forehead.
“Cross my heart,” he captured the hand as it was pulling away and pressed a kiss to the palm.
They stayed sitting in the cooling water for another couple of moments before Hwa felt strong enough, in both body and spirit, to lift himself off of Yeosang. They both shivered as they finally separated, Hwa giving an unsteady giggle at the sensation. He was able to get himself out of the water, pulling one of the towels off the rack and wrapping it around himself. Yeosang followed, taking the other towel before he pulled the plug on the drain, allowing the water to slowly be siphoned away.
“I think we were a little vigorous,” Seonghwa laughed, feeling the slight puddle on the tiles under their feet.
“Too much water,” Yeosang agreed, dropping the towel he had used on the floor to soak up the water now that he was mostly dry. Seonghwa pulled his pajamas on and hung up his towel to dry and Yeosang did the same when he was satisfied with his sopping up of their little puddle. They brushed their teeth and gathered their dirty clothes under their arms, ready to go to sleep.
They made their way out to the living room, after dropping their things in the room on the way, and bid everyone good night after getting glasses of water from the kitchen. Sex could be very thirsty work. Hand in hand, they padded back down the hall to the room they would occupy during their stay. Crawling in under the covers, Seonghwa curled around the body of the other boy, happily tucking himself along Yeosang from the back.
“Whose room is this, anyway?” Yeosang asked as he laced his fingers with Seonghwa’s where they held him around the waist.
“Mingi’s I think,” Seonghwa replied.
“How many nights do you think he has actually spent in here,” humor danced in Yeosang’s voice as he asked the question.
“Not many,” Seonghwa admitted with a laugh.
“Lucky guy, isn’t he?” Yeosang observed as he closed his eyes with a yawn.
“Not as lucky as me,” Seonghwa muttered as he buried his nose in Yeosang’s neck. Sleep claimed them quickly as the rest of the house also moved to settle in for the night. Outside snow continued to fall, but inside the house was warm and cozy with each room filled with love and contentment.

Thanksgiving-O.Lindmark

Requested: yes|no
“You and your family go to Owens for thanksgiving and you both get into a huge fight...” and “you have younger sisters in hs who keep saying things making you both blush”
Ntdp masterlist
A/N: I put these two together for creativity purposes also happy thanksgiving to all y’all who celebrate! This isn’t really all that great but I just decided to post it anyway
Let me know your thoughts if you have any!
“Wow this is his house?” Your younger sister, Julie, asked pointing at the house in front of you all, you looked out your window seeing Owen and his cousins playing basketball in the driveway, “yeah this is it.” You said, you and all of your sisters getting out of the car waiting for your parents to grab the dish.
“Do you need any help?” Owen came over to your car wrapping an arm around you pressing a kiss your cheek saying his hellos to your siblings.
“Oh no it’s alright, sweetheart.” Your mom smiled and you all were making your way to the door, Owen pointed out a few cousins to stay away from talking to while making your way inside.
“Aw look it’s you guys.” Your sister, May, pointed out the picture of you and Owen that his mother loves so much she decided to put on the wall, ever since then his family had been asking about you which then made your family decide they wanted to spend thanksgiving with Owens.
“Yeah, my mom loves that photo.”
“It’s not your best photo, y/n.” Julie joked, Owens mother greeting you all now taking the dish from your mom before coming back and taking your coats.
“Wow there’s more photos of you here then there are at our house.” May pointed you out in two pictures beside each other that you were in with Owens little brother, a picture Owens mom was proud to have taken, “you guys look like a family. It’s a cute picture.”
“I know.” You looked over at Owen who flashed you a small smile nodding, your sisters always loved Owen because he made you happy.
“Oh I have something to show you.” Owen motioned for you to follow him up into his room and you did going up the steps and into his childhood room.
“Aw, your room is so cute.” You said sitting on his bed and he closed the door behind you going onto his computer when you saw his messages pop up first thing. You saw the texts from a girl pop up, she had a heart in her message causing your own heart to break.
“Hold on I need to plug this in,” he left the room, you sat there contemplating scrolling through the messages when you saw her name pop up in a recent text about a minute ago you couldn’t hold it in any longer you scrolled through them.
You saw the constant times Owen messaged her first, times he was with and times he wasn’t. You saw the messages that he tried to tell her he had a girlfriend which resulted in her sending hearts asking why you were still together and saying he could do better with her, and you saw him not even protest the idea.
“Hey I’m back—“
“You love another girl?” You asked picking your head up from his computer seeing him standing there, “excuse me?”
“You love this Tiffany girl don’t you?”
“Pardon me?” He asked now setting the charger down on the bed before picking up his laptop seeing what you had gotten yourself into.
“Owen, do you love her?” You asked crossing your arms over your chest feeling tears ready to fall down your cheeks scared for his response as he was still scrolling through all that you saw.
“Y/n, I don’t love her because I love you.” He closed his laptop now setting it down on the bed right beside you.
“Some type of bullshit when she told you that being with her would be better and you didn’t even protest it or try to fight for our relationship!” You sobbed, your makeup officially ruined, so much for trying to look presentable for his family to like you.
“I did! I ended up calling her and telling her off that there is only one women in my life—“
“Yeah?! Well now it’s her! Because I don’t want to be with someone who talks to other girls behind my back who have a love interest in him.” You spat standing up off his bed about to go out of his bedroom when he grabbed a hold of you.
“we are not breaking up because I don’t even talk to her! Did you see her last five texts?! I’ve been ignoring her because that’s the only way she will know I don’t want anything to do with her!” He shouted, your youngest sister was trying to find the bathroom upstairs when she heard you both arguing and was standing outside the door contemplating going in.
“So just recently you decided to ignore her when you should’ve been doing that from the beginning?!”
“I thought she wanted to be friends, y/n! Hell for the longest time I thought you wanted to be friends and nothing more!”
You groaned pulling on your hair messing up the loose curls you had put in, “I’m done, I can’t do this right now.” You stormed out of his room brushing past your sister standing there at the door.
“You better not tell anybody.”
“I’m not holding any promises to someone who might be cheating on my sister.”
The whole meal you both sat there in silence together, your mom had found out what happened due to Julie telling her everything that she heard and of course your mom told his mom.
“Are you going to eat that?” Owen mumbled pointing at the last few pieces of turkey on your plate and you dumped it on his getting up from the table to get yourself more food.
“What an awful thing you did to her.” His mom whispered causing him to look up from his plate at her, “I didn’t cheat on her. I didn’t think there was a harm of having a friend that’s a girl while dating.”
“Always a harm in that.” His grandma said from the other side of his mom causing him to drop his fork on his plate, “okay who here doesn’t know my crisis?”
“A few maybe.”
“You both enjoying Wisconsin?”
“Mhmm loving it.” You replied to his dad, you both say a few inches away from each other on the couch, your arms crossed over your chest not even daring to look at him.
“Yep best time.”
“Y/n, can I see you?” Your mom tapped your shoulder motioning for you to follow her and you got up excusing yourself following your mom up the stairs into Owens bedroom where his mom was.
“My son, loves you a lot, honey, I knwo what he did was not right trust me you have every right to be mad at him, but honey reading through what he did, defending you he really loves you.” His mom patted for you to sit down next to her on the bed showing you his text messages on the laptop that Owen let his mom look through to see.
You scrolled through to the top of their messages seeing that they only started talking a month ago and from the get go Owen had told her that he had a girlfriend and that he loved you more than anything.
“He loves me.”
“I always have. You know that right?” Owen said you looked over from the laptop to see him leaning against his bedroom door frame.
“We’ll leave you two alone.” His mom and yours left leaving you both together, “why didn’t you just tell me a month ago about her texting you?”
“Because I was stupid. I’m sorry.”
“Apology accepted.” You said standing up moving over to him near the door way, “so we back together? Can I have someone to be thankful for?”
You laughed wrapping your arms around his torso, “yeah we are back together. I love you, o. I’m thankful for you.”
“I’m thankful for you too, and for you not breaking up with me.”

Tumblr media
[Part of Souvenirs Series] [Read via AO3]
Pairing: Chris Evans x Reader Prompt: Chris and his new lady brought back a souvenir from Disneyland and now begins the fun of telling their families. Warnings: Fluff, Angst, Smut... all the things. Word Count: 7,086
[<<< Chapter Nine] [[<<< Chapter One]]
CHAPTER NOTES: This chapter has been years in the making. Literally. It has been through many iterations, many mood changes, many "this is garbage I'm completely starting over" hissy fits... and everything in between. I've been sitting on this version for over a year now, terrified to publish this much ANGST. But, it's past time. Chris and the Reader have so much more to experience and, I want to get there. To get there meant I needed to get past this hurdle. Maybe this could have been two chapters, or even three, but... I digress. THE HURDLE... If you are still reading this, after so long... I am so thankful! If you are getting into this fic series for the first time... I am so thankful! I just hope you won't have to experience multiple year long hiatuses, like your for-readers! HA Ok... please enjoy!
                       ________________________________________
Chris and I had spent Thanksgiving in Boston and would be spending Christmas with my family. The simple fact that Chris was worried about me traveling “so late in the pregnancy” had settled the deal, despite the fact that my doctor had given the go-ahead to travel much further along.
I had quickly found that when it came to me feeling the slightest bit of discomfort, in any way shape or form, it was simply easier to let Chris make the decisions. His constant worry was ever present yet, thankfully, adorable and hadn’t driven me crazy. On the other hand, figuring out a name for this child was going to drive us both absolutely bonkers.
“Please tell me you are joking,” I glared at Chris’s image on my phone.
“Seriously? You don’t like it?” he laughed.
“No, absolutely not. Our child will not be named Christopher Robin.” I propped the device against the decorative bowl on my kitchen table, freeing my hands to cut a piece of chicken in half.
“Fine,” he scoffed, taking a sip of his water. “How’s your chicken?”
“Delicious,” I mumbled with my mouth still full. “Yours?”
“I ruined it, I really did.” He shook his head, staring at the plate in front of him, just off camera. “I just can’t figure out what I did wrong.”
“I told you to be careful to not cook it too long,” I teased, taking a dramatic bite of food.
“You be nice!” He pointed at me with his fork, squinting his eyes. I smiled back mockingly, my lips tight across my teeth. “Don’t make me cut you off from date night!”
“You wouldn’t dare!” I pulled my napkin to my chest in mock horror. “You like this too much.”
“I do,” he conceded. “I definitely do. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world?”
“Except actually being here with me… right?” I raised one eyebrow to him.
“Of course! I’d give anything for that!” His eyes went dark as he pursed his lips.
“Hey,” I urged softly. “No crying on date night.”
“I’m not,” Chris shook his head, smiling. “I promise.”
“Good… because we have business to attend to,” I sighed out, pushing my plate away.
“You sound so excited,” he teased.
“I’m sorry, I’m just tired,” I sighed again.
“And?” he pressed.
“And… I’m worried that we’ll never agree on a name.” I felt my face twist in worry.
Hiding my emotions and true feelings from Chris was something that I failed at continuously. It wasn’t just that I was bad at it, it was that he seemed to read between the lines. Always watching the smallest of facial expressions, listening to my tone and inflection. He well and truly heard the things I said and even more so the things I didn’t say.
“We have time. We have so much more time,” he soothed my worries with his low voice.
“Not really,” I countered.
“Really? We have like…” he paused and looked up and to the side with his eyes. “… Seventeen more weeks? We will totally nail down a name before then. Way before then.”
“I guess we don’t really have another choice, do we?” I laughed at the realization.
“No, no we don’t,” he chuckled. “So what’s on the short list?”
“We don’t even have a short list!” I cried out, lifting my hands into the air, exasperated.
“Ok, ok!” He raised his palms to me in surrender. “It’s ok. It’s fine. What’s on the long list?”
I pulled my notebook around and flipped it open, settling on the page littered with scribbles, doodles, lists, scratched out names and notes about people we didn’t like and therefore couldn’t use their names.
“We have roughly sixty five million girl names that we love, forty million girl names that we like… and… exactly 3 names for a boy that we ‘don’t hate’…” I finger quoted the air.
“Well, maybe that means she’s a girl.” Chris was grinning at me from the screen.
“Maybe.” I smiled back. “But we still need to narrow down the girl names and get some more boy names on board.”
“I still say Christopher Robin.” His eyes lit up, knowing that he was pushing my buttons.
“Not only is that silly, but its way too close to your name,” I scowled at him.
“Well, if it is a boy… maybe we could name him after me?” Now his face twisted in an adorable questioning way, one eyebrow up, one scowled, his lips pulled to the side in a smirk.
“I am so glad we are having this conversation on facetime!” I nearly squealed at the sight of his face.
“What?! Why?”
I watched his face turn to innocent concern.
“Just to watch your face right now. In this moment. To see how you’re really feeling, behind what you’re saying, showing on your face!” I leaned forward, layering my arms on the table in front of me, inching closer to my phone.
“Don’t you start talking about my eyebrows right now! Don’t do it!” he play shouted, covering his forehead with one hand.
“I love you,” I laughed the words out. “I love you so much.”
“I love you,” he sighed back.
“You really want to name your boy after you?”
“I do,” he nodded, smiling.
“I can tell.” I took a deep breath to settle myself and continued. “So, we will name our son, if we have a son, after his father.”
“Really? You mean that?” His face lit up with joy.
“Of course I mean it, you silly man! I wouldn’t have said it if I didn’t mean it.” I leaned back, crossing my arms over my chest. “Naming this baby is stressful enough, I’m not going to joke about something that clearly means something to you.” I looked down at my ever expanding belly and ran my hands over and over, smiling. “Tiny Christopher Junior.”
“Tiny Christopher Junior,” he repeated.
“Junior… or the second?” I looked back to the phone now.
“Junior, for sure. Our kid can’t walk around Boston thinking he’s some prince or something, with the second,” he shook his head roughly, chuckling to himself.
“Boston?” My heart fluttered at the thought of moving.
“I’m sure he’ll visit there, at least once in his life, right?” He winked at me, quickly easing my worries. I wasn’t ready to have that conversation yet and he knew it.
“Of course he will,” I agreed.
“Ok, so we have a boy name picked out,” he cheered. “Air high five!”
We mimicked a high-five between our phones and both erupted into a fit of giggles.
“We are going to be horrible parents!” I roared in laughter.
“No, no no no! We are going to be fun parents!”
“Well, that’s for sure!” I agreed, whole heartedly.
“Alright,” he popped a piece of chicken into his mouth and immediately made a sour face. He turned his face from the camera to swipe the offending food way into his napkin.
“That bad huh?” I pulled my lips between my teeth, attempting to maintain composure.
“Ugh, yes,” he grumbled. “I’m picking the recipe next time.”
“Oh come on! You can’t blame the recipe! Mine turned out just fine.”
“Yeah, well… I’ll pick something that I know I can cook for next time.” He fidgeted with his plate, obviously moving his chicken away from the rest of his food.
“That sounds fair. Just no barbeque. You know I can’t barbeque.”
“Deal.” He poked around his plate some more and then settled his eyes on the screen again. “I’m gonna see you in a few days anyway. Maybe I’ll barbeque for you while I’m there.”
“I like that idea.” I smiled at the idea of Chris cooking at my house. Moving around my house, like he belonged here. Because he does belong here.
He had started to leave things at my place, here and there. A shirt one time, left behind for me to sleep in. A toothbrush another time, after forgetting his own and needing to buy one. The next time he bought an entire set of toiletries to leave behind. I had surprised him by clearing out space in the master bathroom for his things to take up residence. Now, it seemed that each trip his luggage was getting smaller and smaller. He had a small selection of button down shirts hanging in my closet. A handful of t-shirts, some pants and workout clothes, were neatly folded in my dresser. One pair of flip flops, a pair of running shoes and a pair of casual shoes were lined up in the corner of the closet. A spare charger was permanently plugged in at the nightstand on “his” side of my bed. His toiletries now co-mingled with my own in the bathroom. He even had a favorite coffee mug, which I secretly used nearly every morning that he wasn’t there.
“So what is on the baby check list while I’m home?” he interrupted my thoughts with a quiet question. I smiled at the mention of “home” and his face lit up as he registered my delight.
“Well…” I started, turning pages in my notebook again. “Besides picking a girl name? Finish painting. Assemble the crib. Decorate. Pick out some bedding to put on the baby registry.”
“Ooh, do we get to use one of those beepy things at Target?” He was nearly bouncing in excitement.
“If you want to,” I laughed. “But if we find something that we like online, then we’ll just add it to the Amazon registry.”
“I say we check Target first. I really want to use one of those things.” He shook his head as his own ridiculousness.
“We can check Target first,” I assured him.
“When is your shower, again?”
“The first weekend in March.”
“So loooooong. I want to buy stuff now,” he whined.
“I do too… but they’re really excited about this. We should let them have their fun.” I really was so glad that my family was being so supportive. Mom had a not-so-secret stash of baby things, “hidden” in the guest room closet. Dad gave me updates each time Mom or my sister added to the stash. So far it seems that it was mostly clothes, for both boys and girls. Dad said Mom was going to save the un-needed clothes for the next baby. When Dad confessed all of this to me I laughed so hard that I cried.
“I know, you’re right,” he conceded. “We’re still doing the nursery decorations ourselves, right?”
“Yes, we are. So get your butt back out here so we can work on it!” I was suddenly sad, missing him so much it was nearly painful.
“Hey,” he urged gently. “I will be there in a few days. We will decorate and paint and I will cook for you and rub your feet and…”
“And cuddle in bed?” I raised my eyebrows to him, simply missing his touch. Missing his presence in the house. Missing his laughter echoing off the walls.
“And cuddle in bed,” he agreed. “And do other things in bed.”
I snorted a laugh in response.
“Hey now, the doctor keeps saying that these hormones are supposed to make you crazy for me!” His eyes went wide in exaggeration.
“I’m already crazy for you,” I argued.
“You sure about that?”
“Of course I am!” I cried out. “Are you complaining about the frequency? Or is the quality not up to your expectations?” I squinted my eyes at him.
“Neither!” He surrendered his palms again, laughing. “Neither, I swear. I was just teasing! I promise!”
“I was just teasing, too.” A smile broke across my face and I burst into giggles.
“Oh man, you got me… I swear. I’m so scared to make you mad. Supposedly these hormones are supposed to make you like…”
“Crazy?” I interrupted, still laughing.
“I didn’t say crazy!” He held up a finger in protest.
“No, I did.” I took a deep breath and sighed, calming myself. “I’m not crazy though, right?”
“Not at all, honey. Not at all.”
… … …  … … …
A few long and tiring days later Chris arrived, letting himself into my home with the key I had forced into his hand the last time he left. The argument was laid moot at my insistence that if something were to happen, he needed a key.
Nothing bad had happened, but I was thankful that Chris had his key when he found me snoozing at my desk in the studio
“Good morning sunshine,” he crooned as I blinked my eyes open.
“I can’t believe I fell asleep,” I groaned, lifting my head from the desk surface, a paper sewing pattern coming with my cheek. Chris chuckled gently peeling the paper off.
“Is it time to take maternity leave?” He joked and looked around the room. The clutter made my exhaustion obvious. On the cutting table, a pair of dressmaking sheers lay open, topping a pile of cut fabric, with scraps littering the surrounding surface. A new pattern lay nearby, only half taped together. Both serger and sewing machine stood proudly lit, still switched on. Piles of old and new fabric, haphazardly hanging from their shelves, bolts threatening to fall over, near ones that already had.
My eyes followed his gaze around the room, landing on my laptop that I had pushed to the side, still brightly lit with my webhost back end on the screen. I shook my head and clicked ‘save’, hoping that my edits hadn’t timed out. With confirmation of my changes I checked my phone, noting five missed calls. Three from Chris and two from Kate.
“I need to call Kate,” I rasped, before clearing my throat.
“To talk to her about maternity leave?” Concern was etched across Chris’ face.
“No… not yet,” I scowled as I clicked through my phone. E-mails from a fabric designer filled my inbox. I winced. “Remember that conference I skipped to come to New Mexico?”
“I do,” he nodded slowly.
“I was supposed to meet with a fabric designer…”
“A big one, right? Your sister told me.”
“Yes,” I sighed out disappointment in myself. “Basically, I lied and told her I was sick and needed to reschedule. Then later told her that I’m pregnant.”
“Ok… and?” Chris didn’t hide the confusion.
“She assumed the illness was morning sickness and was actually really cool about it,” I felt my eyebrows raise and I filled him in.
“That’s a good thing, right?”
“It is! Yes… but… it pushed back the design. It was working out to be an exclusive fabric design for me. For my clothing line.”
“That’s amazing, honey!” Chris beamed at me, then scowled. “Wait, so what it wrong?”
“We haven’t found time to get together, so everything has been through email, which pushes back the timeline. With the fabric design pushed back, the clothing design gets pushed back and I just really want this line to AT LEAST be in manufacturing before the baby is born.” I rubbed my temples and closed my eyes. Chris was right, I needed a break, but there was no way I would enjoy maternity leave, knowing my company was left hanging. And to be fair, it seemed way too early for maternity leave.
“Ok… alright… we’ve got this. It’s ok.” Chris turned my desk chair toward him and knelt in front of me. “So, what do we need to do to get to that point… or to get to a point that you can leave it to Kate?”
“I can’t leave it all to Kate. This is my company!” Tears welled in my eyes. “I can’t do that. This is my design. This is what I’ve been waiting for! An exclusive fabric for such a small company… it’s so hard! I can’t just walk away! I want to enjoy this. I’ve worked SO hard for it!” I could feel my emotions taking over. These damn hormones.
“Oh honey,” Chris pulled me into a hug. “You will! It’ll be ok!”
“No!” I wailed. “It won’t! I have to take maternity leave at some point… I have to take a break! I’m losing my mind, I swear! I’m exhausted all the time and then when I sleep, I dream of sewing!”
“Let’s take a little break, get out of this room, go put that crib together!” Chris looked at me expectantly.
“I was dreaming about sewing the baby’s bedding, when you woke me up,” I nearly whispered, shaking my head slowly.
“Oh honey,” Chris whispered, pulling me into another hug.
“I don’t know what to do right now. I’m so tired, I can’t think.” I sniffled, wiped my eyes and pulled my head up to look him in the face, for what seemed like the first time since he woke me. “And I need a shower, so bad.”
“Alright,” Chris stood abruptly. “I’ve got this.”
“You do?” My face twisted in amusement and confusion.
“Yep. You need a shower, a break and some help. I’ve got this.” He straightened up, putting his hands on his hips and surveyed the room again. “Go get in the shower. I’m going to get Kate in here to clean up… AH!” He held up a finger when I tried to protest. “I will pay her for her time today and then I think we should maybe talk to her about either changing her schedule, or taking on more hours.”
“And then what?” I sighed, knowing he was right.
“Then, when you get out of the shower, you’re going to answer those emails,” he motioned at my phone. “Then we can eat something or you can take a nap, but you’ll decide that AFTER you shower. Alright?”
“Alright.” I agreed, succumbing to his help. “Let me get you Kate’s number.”
“You’re silly if you think I don’t already have it,” he chuckled, retrieving his phone from his back pocket. “Get in the shower, now. You smell.”
“I do not!” I protested, standing with the assistance of his free hand.
“You don’t,” he smiled, kissing the top of my head. “But, I don’t like seeing you like this.”
“I hear it’s worse once the baby comes,” I teased.
“I won’t like that either, but I’ll do whatever I can to help. I can promise you that.” With a gentle push I was out the door and walking across my back yard. Simply being outside in the fresh air was already a welcome change. I glanced around, imagining playing with our sweet little girl that was yet to come.
“We should get a swing set back here,” Chris called from the doorway of the pool house studio.
“I was just thinking that,” I called back.
“Shower first. I can smell you from here!” His chuckle almost choked off his words.
To say I took a long shower would be the understatement of history. I started with the shower, steaming hot, standing under the cascade with my eyes closed. When my legs tired I longed for a bath and switched to the tub faucet, plugging the drain as I sat down to enjoy the bath.
Chris knocked softly on the door as he opened it slightly.
“Did you fall asleep in there?” His voice was low, as if he didn’t want to interrupt me, had I actually been sleeping.
“No,” I giggled. “Just reveling at how my belly sort of floats in the tub.”
“Just your belly?” I heard his tone change.
“Well, no, but… my boobs always floated,” my giggle bubbling into a laugh.
“I’m sad I never noticed that.” I could hear the smile in his voice before he peeked around the curtain.
“Cool, huh?” I smiled up at him, my hands running down my stomach.
“Very,” his smile turned and he tipped his head to the side. “Is she moving?”
“She’s movin,” I stopped my hand, attempting to feel her kicks from the outside. “Wanna try to feel again?”
“Eh… I’m kinda worried I’ll just be disappointed again.” He shrugged his feelings away and sat on the edge of the tub.
“I have a good feeling this time,” I grinned as I felt a tapping from my belly, on my hand.
“Oh do you now?” He shifted his weight and moved his hand to hover over mine, in a silent request for permission to touch me.
I took Chris’ hand in my free hand, sliding it under my opposite palm. We waited, our eyes locked. I felt a small bubble of movement, deep in my belly and frowned.
“I don’t know…” his face fell completely, dejected and disappointed.
“Shh, give her a second,” I scowled back at him. As if on cue, the tiniest of kicks made my eyebrows shoot up. “Did you feel that!?”
“No.” Chris exhaled through his nose as tears welled in his eyes. “I swear I’m never gonna….”
He was interrupted by jab, straight to his hand, as if to say “DAD! Shut it! I’m here!”
“HA!” I yelped. “You felt THAT!” My face split into a grin and tears spilled over with no warning.
“I did… I… Wow… Oh my god!” Another kick stopped his speech. “I swear, everything she does… it all makes me cry!” Tears streamed down his face, dropping into the tub.
“Well, you’re a daddy,” I spoke softly, my voice cracking with my own emotion.
“I’m a daddy,” he whispered.
“Now you’re really never going to take your hand off my stomach,” I smiled away my happy tears.
“Nope, never!” He straightened up. “Have you even washed yourself or have you just been enjoying the water?”
“Just enjoying the water,” I sighed contentedly, taking his free hand to place next to the one already on me.
“You’ll need to do that. I don’t want to hear any whining about tangled hair or being itchy from the water.”
“I will. As soon as you’re out of here,” I looked up at him through my eyelashes.
“OH, I’m not leaving!” His eyebrows lifted in a i-dare-you-to-tell-me-to-leave look.
“What? Then how am I supposed to wash myself?”
“Oh, don’t let me bother you. I’ll stay out of your way as best as I can!” With that, he grinned and abruptly barrel rolled over me, into the tub, landing between me and wall. Water sloshed out over the edge in a tsunami, soaking the rugs and bath mat.
“Christopher!” I yelped, trying to sit up.
“What?” He feigned innocence, then winked. “Like I said, don’t let me bother you… but I’ll wash your belly for you if you’d like.”
“Your clothes are soaked!”
“Uh… everything is soaked,” he nearly cackled, his hands still firmly on my round stomach. “Lucky for me, I’ve brought extra clothes!”
So there he stayed, while I drained the tub, stood and restarted the shower. I washed my hair and face, all while his hands stayed put. I poured soap into my loofah and eyed him, holding out the sponge, only to be met with a shake of his head and a laugh.
Once my entire body, minus my stomach, was clean, Chris took the loofah from me and began to wash my belly slowly, gently, almost as if I were made of glass.
“Can you still feel her moving?” I nearly whispered.
“I can,” he grinned, washing with the loofah as his free hand trailed behind it, never missing a spot or an opportunity to feel his little girl move.
“This has been simultaneously one of the weirdest and best days.”
“It’s only weird because you fell asleep on your desk,” he teased.
“Uh… and my baby daddy jumped into the tub with me, fully clothed,” I reminded him.
“Baby daddy,” he repeated in a sarcastic chuckle, scowling.
“Hey,” I called to him gently, blatantly ignoring his attempt at letting the moment pass. I lifted his chin with my fingers and felt my face twist in worry. “Hey…” I nearly cooed.
“It’s fine.” He shook his head from my hand and went back to washing.
“Not, it’s not. You’re not fine.”
“No… I’m not.” He stood and rinsed the loofah in the running shower behind me, one hand still on my soapy belly.
“Talk to me?” I nearly begged, standing on tip toe in an attempt to get eye level with him.
“I don’t want to fight.” His voice was low, pain dripping from every word, as he set about hanging the loofah, closing and putting away soap bottles, all one handed.
“I don’t either,” I was taken aback. Shit. Shit, shit, shit. He’s tired of the baby daddy joke. Shit.
“Then we won’t.” He forced a smile and turned me away from him, to rinse the soap from my body. His hands moved as slowly and gently as before, with no hint as to how he was feeling.
“Chris, don’t…” I could barely get the words out. Would this be our first fight? Shit! “Please talk to me.”
“No, not right now. Not while you’re naked and we’re in the shower.”
“And you’re fully clothed in the shower?” I wasn’t sure if I meant it as a joke, to lighten the mood, or if I just didn’t know what to say. I knew immediately it was the wrong thing to say, when he recoiled from me, both of his hands coming off of my stomach.
“I said I don’t want to fight… not that I want to joke about it.” His body went rigid.
I spun around in his arms that still formed a barrier around me and reached for his face. He recoiled, again.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered, my hands falling to my sides. It didn’t seem appropriate to rest them on my stomach, no matter the fact that my stomach was still my body. It didn’t seem appropriate to put my hands where his had just been, in such joy.
“You have nothing to be sorry for.” His voice was hollow, his eyes filling with angry tears, where there had just been happy tears. “I don’t want this conversation to go like this. Not now, not here, not because I got angry. Not like this.”
“What conversation!?” I was suddenly terrified that my worst fears were coming true. Shit.
“Let’s get out of the shower,” he proclaimed, pulling the curtain aside calmly and stepping out.
I exhaled sharply, my hands flying to cover my mouth. I tried to hide the sob, to hold it in, but it broke through. I surrendered to the desperate crying that took over and looked down, placing my hands on my belly. No, no no no no. Did I just screw things up THAT bad, THAT fast?
“Chris?” I choked through the tears, frozen in the shower.
“Out of the shower, please?” He reached in, twisting off the tap and held out a bath sheet.
That fucking towel. THAT towel? That huge towel you bought for me when I complained that my belly got so big that I could barely get my towel around me. That towel, that you surprised me with!? That’s the towel you’re going to hand to me right before you break up with me!?
I stood shaking, naked, wet and cold, staring into his eyes. I could read nothing. There was nothing.
“Y/N, please!” He thrust the towel towards me as a reminder of its presence. Yet, I couldn’t move. I couldn’t take the towel. Not THAT towel. Not any towel, from him. So I stood. He sighed in frustration and began to dry me off. Squeezing out my hair, gently pressing the terry cloth to my face, my neck, my breasts.
“Stop,” I pleaded through a sob. He continued, gently drying my arms and legs. He turned me from my shoulders, to face away from him, and dried my back and butt. I felt my body heave with emotion as he turned me back to face him. “Stop, please.”
“No,” his eyes stuck on my stomach. “I told you, I can’t do this with you naked, not here, not like this.” He took the towel to my stomach and gently dried my skin of every last drop of water.
“Chris!” I struggled to regain composure.
“Do you need lotion?” A single eyebrow raised on his face and I came undone.
“No, I don’t need lotion! I can’t do this, Chris! Don’t do this to me!” I sobbed, covering my face.
“You can’t DO this?” He nearly yelled, standing up. “What does that mean!?”
“I don’t need lotion! I need YOU!” I wailed now, with no care in the world of the fact that I was naked, no care of who heard me. I couldn’t do this.
“You need ME?” He nearly bellowed the words. “You NEED me? Then why can’t you do this!?”
“What!?” I cried out, nearly in physical pain from the emotion. “Yes, I need you! I love you! You are the father of my child! I need you! Why are you leaving me!? Over a joke!?” I was angry now, ripping the towel from him and throwing it on the ground. I eyed the linen closet, intent on getting myself a different towel.
“It’s not a joke!” He shouted back. I flinched away from his anger, startled and covered my chest with my hands and arms. His face softened and bent to pick up the towel, whispering with a shake of his head “It’s not a joke. It hurts.”
“So why didn’t you tell me? Instead you’re just going to break up with me? You’re going to leave me… you’re going to leave her!?” My hand went protectively to my stomach, forgoing my modesty.
“I’m not breaking up with you!” His face broke into a million emotions. “Why would you think that!? I promised you I’m not going anywhere! WHY would you think I’m breaking up with you?”
“You’re not… you’re… not?” I gasped for air. “I… you’re NOT!?”
“I’m not…” he stepped towards me cautiously and when I didn’t move away, he wrapped the towel around my shoulders.
“You’re not,” I shivered into the towel, feeling my body ready to give way. “I don’t understand… you said this conversation… and… you… you went so cold!” My breath quickened again, my heart racing.
“I just meant about us… about where we are and where we’re going and… I didn’t want to pose it as I’m tired of being called the baby daddy, no matter how much that hurts… I wanted to just have a conversation about our relationship.”
“I didn’t know it was hurting you,” I nearly whispered, holding back tears. “I really didn’t know. I’m sorry, Chris. I’m so sorry.” I gave in as he pulled me to his chest, sobbing into his already soaked shirt. “I am so sorry.”
“Don’t be sorry, please. Please, don’t. I know you didn’t mean to hurt me. I should have said something sooner. I realized that after I talked to my mom about it and…”
“You talked to your MOM about it!?” I cut him off.
“I talk to my mom about everything, honey… I… ” he trailed off, realizing his mistake.
“So, something that I was doing was hurting you… and I had NO idea… and instead of telling me that I’m hurting you… you tell your MOM that I’m hurting you!?” I was officially hysterical. Hormones be damned, I was angry and sad, furious and broken. Have I really failed him that much as a… a what? A girlfriend? A lover? A… baby mama? Damnit, that word really does hurt!
“I realize now how stupid that was… and I’m sorry.” He pulled me out to arm’s length and crouched to see eye to eye. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry this got so bad.”
“She must hate me now!” I whispered, leading into screeching “Oh my god, she must HATE me! Chris!!! I’ll never be able to look her in the eye again!” I threw my face into his chest again.
“She doesn’t hate you. I promise.” He rubbed circles on my back, shushing me. “She told me to talk to you about it, that I was making a bigger deal out of it that it really was.”
“Not if I was hurting you! I don’t ever want to hurt you!” I mumbled into his chest, then pushed off to stare him down. “Damnit Chris! Your FACE, when I said it in the shower! I thought that was it, that we were done!”
“We are not done,” he reassured me.
“But you can’t DO that! You can’t let things get that bad, without talking to me!”
“I won’t. Never again. I promise!” He cupped my face in his hands, caressing my cheek.
“This sucked,” I began to cry again. “Now we can’t ever talk about where we are, without it being tainted by this… this…” I motioned at the shower and let my hand fall back to my side, pressing my forehead to his chest.
“It really did suck,” he sighed the words out, cracking with emotion. “I’m so sorry.”
“I’m sorry too.” I couldn’t stop the tears.
“Can we try to talk though? Can you put some clothes on and stop distracting me with your naked body, so we can really talk about it?” I felt his impish smile against my head and couldn’t keep a straight face, even through the tears.
“You’re a brat!” I laughed, wiping my face.
“Your brat,” he grinned, drying his own eyes.
“Yes, my brat. Is that what you want me to call you?” I pressed my lips together, fighting a smile.
“Staaaaahp!” He threw his head back, his weight on his heels and came back with a true smile. “Come on, naked lady! I want clothes on you for this conversation.”
Chris led me by the hand, to my bedroom. There I found two loads of laundry washed, dried and folded neatly on the bed. The bed was made, with fresh tulips in a vase on the nightstand, coupled with a cup of tea.
“I assume that was still hot, before you jumped in the tub?” I teased, motioning towards the clearly room temperature mug.
“That is was,” he nodded and led me to the cushioned bench at the foot of my bed. With swift determination of someone that knew exactly where I kept everything, he set to bringing me clean panties, a bralette, tank top and leggings. “Socks too?”
“No, no socks. Thank you.” I smiled, unwrapped myself from the towel and waited, knowing he would not allow me to dress myself.
“No fight over who puts your clothes on?” He smiled down at me.
“No, no more fighting.” I lifted my arms and let him dress me. Each article of clothing was punctuated with a sad, slow, desperate for affection, please don’t ever leave me, deep kiss.
I smiled and fought back tears until I was clothed. When all was said and done, Chris asked if I wanted to lie down.
“No… I was told I have to attend to my emails before I took a nap,” I joked, poking him with an elbow.
“I’d like to talk first?” He smiled, his easy going nature back in full force. I nodded pointedly in agreement, blowing all of the air from my lungs to clear my head.
“You are everything to me and everything to this tiny girl,” I peeked down at his hand, already on my stomach. “I will call you… or not call you… anything you want. I don’t ever want to go through what just happened, ever again.”
“I think you took the words right out of my mouth,” he smiled. “But… before marriage and between dating… there is exclusivity, which usually means calling each other boyfriend and girlfriend…”
“Seriously? You think we’re not exclusive? I know I’m not seeing anyone else… and if you are, I swear to god, Chris…”
“I’m not!” He chuckled, moving his hand to gently cover my mouth. “I’d just like to call you my girlfriend and for you to call me your boyfriend, because I feel like that is the last step before being engaged.”
“I’m not ready to be engaged…” my eyes went wide at the thought and I grabbed at his hand.
“I know you’re not and that is fine. If you are not ready, then I am not ready.” He took my hands in his and squeezed. “I hope I know when you’re ready though… because I want to surprise you. I don’t want it to be a conversation that ends in a decision. Is that selfish?”
“Not at all,” my eyes squinted nearly shut with my smile. “I want to be surprised.”
“Ok… I think we are on the same page?” Those eyebrows, they danced with concern.
“So long as you don’t plan to ‘surprise’ me on Christmas or New Years,” I finger quoted the air and smiled.
“I do not. I promise. No major holiday proposals.” He kissed my knuckles and laid our hands together on my stomach. “And I promise that if something is hurting me or bothering me, I will talk to you about it first.”
“Unless it’s someone else bothering you,” I joked.
“Even if it’s someone else,” Chris smiled and shook his head. “It’s you that I should be going to for help. You are the number one woman in my life. My mom is my mom and I love that woman to death, but this… this is my forever and I need to treat it as such.”
“Don’t tell your mom that!” I giggled at my own joke.
“Ha… well… she knows. We’ve been betrothed since I was six, if you remember,” his smile went crooked as he cocked an eye at me.
“I love you,” I whispered, dropping my eyes to my hands.
“I love you,” he tipped my head up with his finger tips to kiss me gently. I smiled into his kiss at the groan of relief he emitted.
“No moaning!”
“That was a groan,” he insisted quickly, then slid his hand behind my neck to pull me in for a deeper kiss. My voice betrayed me and Chris chuckled. “That was a moan!”
“Do it again,” I quietly begged. And he did. Again and again, each kiss more feverish than the other.
“Why did I even get you dressed!?” he mumbled against my mouth, fumbling with my tank top in an effort to pull it over my head.
“Because I was distracting you with my naked body!” I slid my hands under his shirt, eliciting a true moan from the man before me.
“Distract me again,” he begged. So I did, first removing his grey thermal shirt, then assisting with my own shirt. His eyes went wide at the sight of my chest, nearly bare to him in the lace bralette. “I swear they grow by the second.”
“And get more sensitive,” I pouted.
Chris’ face feigned surprised innocence as he sat back on his heels, drawing a hand to trace the edge of my bra. His eyes met mine in question and I whimpered in response. I knew what he wanted to do. I wanted it too, more than I could describe, but feared for the possible pain.
I was not prepared for the searing pleasure as Chris pulled the fabric aside and took my breast into his mouth. With my gasp as an answer to his unasked question, he continued with fervor. As his right hand cupped my breast, his free hand was left to explore and explore he did, until neither of us could take the wait any longer. Our clothes were nearly ripped apart in the sudden fever of desire. We tangled to the floor, our bodies a writhing heap of passion. I cried out with each climax of pleasure rolling into the next, lost in a daze of lust until Chris met his end, roaring out his euphoria like I had never heard him before.
There we laid, panting and gasping for air, on the floor beside my bed. “Was that make up sex?” Chris mumbled, tucking a tendril of hair behind my hear.
“I think so,” I huffed, still regaining my breath.
“You ok?”
“Yep, just… I had no idea an orgasm included uterine cramps until my uterus got so dang big!” I shifted my weight, away from Chris, turning to my back.
“Cramps? Not like, contractions, right?” He was up on his elbow, peering down in concern.
“No… not real ones I don’t think. They’re just… tight. Really tight.”
“But no pain…” his hand went to my belly, sending those eyebrows up in Surprise. “Wow, that’s… that’s firm.”
“Right?” I laughed away the discomfort. “But no, no pain.”
“Good.” He pecked a kiss to my forehead. “We don’t have time for a hospital visit today.”
“Uh… ok. I didn’t really want to go anyway?”
“Liz should be here any minute… unless she’s already here…” He trailed off, sneaking a look over the bed, out the window, to the back yard.
“What!?” I yelped, struggling with my attempt to leap up into action.
“Slow down lady, you’ll hurt yourself,” he grunted as he got himself upright. “C’mon,” he rolled his extended hand towards me. “I doubt she heard us anyway.”
Our clothes were collected, mine being put back on after a trip to the toilet, and Chris’ hung over the shower curtain rod to dry. All the while, my eyes were leveled at him in judgement.
“What?” He chuckled, avoid my glare by carefully selecting a clean shirt from the dresser.
“You knew. You brat.”
“Maybe I did,” he pulled a black t-shirt over his head and grinned when his face reappeared.
“You DID!”
“I did,” he giggled to himself, slipping on a pair of khaki colored jeans. With his zipper and button in place, he strode over and held my face in his hands. “Are you mad?”
“No…” I smirked. “It’s fine, it wouldn’t be the first time she heard me with someone.”
“What!?” Shock streaked across his face. “Are you serious?”
“No, you crazy man! I just had to get you back!”
“Oh thank god,” he pulled me in for a hug. “Because you know there were NO men before me.”
“Of course not,” I giggled.
“Promise you’re not mad?”
“About Liz hearing us? No. But, let’s try to not ever do that again. Ok?” I spied Liz emerging from the studio, through the window.
“Ok,” he smiled with his cheek against my head before noticing Liz and promptly erupted into a fit of giggles.

Advent is Coming...
If you prepare now, you’ll be set up for a spiritually profitable Advent!
First, especially if you have children, I highly recommend the Jesse Tree tradition, as provided for in this series:
Tumblr media
It will lead you through the Old Testament, providing the background for Christmas.  If you want something purely Bible-based, or more DIY, the Antiochians have this list of Bible readings to accompany a Jesse Tree, without ornaments or anything. The Preacher’s Institute does not appear to have done their New Testament Challenge in a while, but the archives still show how it was done.
One of our favorite traditions is the Advent Wreath, and you still have time to get together some thing for it. We went to a craft store and bought everything we needed for ours - six little wood candle holders, one large one, and a wooden plate or charger to form the base. Here’s the prayer booklet we use with it. The end result was:
Tumblr media
I have some things I hope to share about Thanksgiving, and St. Nicholas Day and St. Lucia, as well as a Christmas Tree blessing and more, but we’ll leave at just preparing for Advent for now.

Autumn Themed Thanksgiving Table Ideas
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Yes, Christmas is amazing as well, but Thanksgiving is all about the food…well, the turkey! This year, I bought a 26 lb. turkey and I have a house full of guests coming. There is nothing better than gathering around the table sharing a fantastic meal, celebrating friends and family, and making memories,
I designed this tablescape to look casual but added some elegant pieces to create a more festive and sophisticated style. I think a Thanksgiving table should represent what the holiday means to you personally.
I started my design with these pheasant salad plates in mind which I purchased from William Sonoma. The colors have warm hues of brown, yellow, orange, and green that you find in Autumn. I then added some of my favorite neutral pieces like cream-colored chargers and plates to give this place setting a more layered look.
Once I had that completed, I designed my centerpiece using some of the same colors found in the plates.
I chose roses and tulips and filled the rest of the centerpiec with varied shapes, colors, and sizes using chrysanthemums and seasonal colored gerbera daisies. I also had a few smaller bud vases filled with a roses that I put in different locations in the center of the table.
"Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the autumn tree."  -- Emily Bronte
DESIGN TIP: Pick a few colors from a stylish object and carry those colors in different shades throughout your tablescape. This creates a more cohesive design.
"“Be faithful to your own taste, because nothing you really like is ever out of style.” "  -- Billy Baldwin
I placed assorted sizes and colors of velvet hot skwash pumpkins to my table to add texture. I also added a small Waterford crystal bowl with decorative items to help fill in the center of the table. It also adds interest to the table and keeps the eye moving throughout the design.
Bringing natural elements from nature to your table is always a great idea. Look at what you have outside that feels festive to you and place them on your tablescape. I added some pinecones here and there.
This Thanksgiving table design is a nod toward our beautiful New England foliage and the wildlife found in this region of the U.S. During this time of the year, you see different hues of orange, yellow, and green just to name a few. We also witness the migration of different birds flying south for the winter. It is a splash of colors and sounds that fill our senses.
I know that so many are using a mixture of patterns for their tablecloth, but I love simple white and cream linen. It has a little formality that I like, and it feels a bit like you are eating at a high-end restaurant. It feels special to me.
"Two sounds of autumn are unmistakable...the hurrying rustle of crisp leaves blown along the street...by a gusty wind, and the gabble of a flock of migrating geese. "  -- Hal Borland
Mulling Cider Recipe
When entertaining, guest use all five senses when entering your home. I love to use mulling spices during thanksgiving to capture the essence of the holiday. Warm spices such as cinnamon, clove, anise and others fill the house with an amazing aroma. It tastes great and brings feelings of wellbeing. I want my home to feel like a warm welcoming place where people can feel comfortable. This is my way of adding just another layer of comfort to my guests experience.
Thyme Popovers Recipe
These lovely linen napkins were exactly what I was looking for to finish off my design. The color, pattern, and texture added to the overall design aesthetics and centered each place setting perfectly.
The thing is…designing a Thanksgiving table is really all about the people you invite to your table. Be faithful to your own taste and remember, nothing is really ever out of style. Enjoy the process of creating a beautiful space where you can share your table with others. When entertaining, always try to incorporate something for all the senses to take in. Lighting, music and seasonal flavors and aromas all add to the overall experience.
As with everything I post on my blogs, if you have any comments or questions, please leave them here or email me through my contact page. I would love to hear from you and welcome you anytime!
"May your home be a place where friends meet, family gathers, and love grows. "
Design with your heart™️
Happy entertaining my friends!
