Blinky’s POV:
I sadly bid goodbye to Tommy, but promised I’d come visit soon. His mother made it clear I was welcome anytime, despite her original hostility. And I told Monty I’d attempt to fix the wall next time and bring my good supplies. I had pretty much zoned out the whole day, my autism being particularly annoying today. Every little thing was making my skin crawl and my head pound. But I was trying my best to remain calm and in control.
Macy pulled up to our usual spot and parked.
“Wanna get some lunch before we head back to your place?”
I nodded. She frowned, lifting my chin with her finger.
“You feeling ok pretty girl?”
“I don’t know what’s gonna happen when I walk through that door Macy. I ran away, yes I told them I was going but still, I was a coward, I left.”
“I’m sure they won’t hold that against ya puddin’ how could anyone stay mad at you?”
She missed my nose and I giggled.
“Want me to go in with you?”
My eyes widened as I looked at her.
“It’s not like I don’t know.”
“I know that you know. But they don’t- know… you know, you know?”
“You’re cute when you don’t think before you speak.” She jeered.
I rolled my eyes.
“I just, I don’t want them to freak out. What if someone tries to hurt you? That would kill me inside.”
“You’re worried about me getting hurt? May I remind you I beat Thomas in our little wrestling contest last night?”
“Yeah you did” I smiled dreamily.
“There’s that smile I love so much! Come on let’s get you some proper food, I’m buying.”
Macy was too tall to put her arm on my shoulder, so she just put it on my head and I playfully glared up at her. I don’t know how she does it. Macy isn’t the happiest of people, at least not on the outside. Most people would probably find her scary or intimidating. Yet she always managed to make me smile, from that first day we met all those months ago.
Miss G greeted Macy and I Happily. As we sat in our spot she set down our coffees, leaving the pot at the table.
“You know you two are my favourite right?” She said.
Macy smiled at her. “Your boss makes the only edible food in this town” Macy joked, “it’s good to see you again.”
“You two deary, you know what you want to order yet? I know this one wants a pastry.” She laughed.
“Yes please!”
“Give us a moment to think, take your time with the other customers.”
Miss G gave us a kind smile and left us to look at the menus.
“Ugh, why can’t that woman be my mother.” Macy quipped.
“I know right. But Luda ain’t all that bad. She’ll get better.” I said, placing my hand in hers.
“I’ve never seen her yell at Hoyt like that before Blinky, I think you starred a wildfire.” She laughed.
“Good, your family needed to get in gear. I swear y’all didn’t say two words to each other that weren’t about me. Do you guys even talk?” I asked.
“Just me and Tommy. Nobody wants to hear what Hoyt or Monty have to say. And Ma, she has her kind moments but we mostly just stick to ourselves. I don’t mind it that much, means I don’t have anyone up my ass when I disappear from time to time.”
“And where would you be right now, if you weren’t with me?” I asked, curious.
“The Glenwood Cemetery in Huston. The place is huge! Everytime I go I read a few new graves and I like to think about the lives they may have had. Oldest grave I’ve found so far was 1871.”
I smiled fondly. Macy had strange interests but I always let her talk about them. I loved hearing her voice when she was happy. It had this little hum, when her tongue moves to fast and hit the top of her mouth. It sounded like little bees in my ears. She had the slightest lisp that she tried really hard to hide, but I thought it added to her charm.
My voice whistled too, ever since I lost that tooth. Sometimes my tongue would poke out from behind it and make a weird little sound. We looked over the menu, I knew it was really important to her that I ate something “healthy” so I put a pause on the could so I could focus. But that didn’t last long when I caught her staring.
“Yes?” I asked.
“Nothing,”
I squinted my eyes at her.
“Did you know you stick your tongue out when your focused?” She asked smugly.
“Pftt, I dont-“ I looked down, “oh. What’s that doing there?” I said.
She laughed airily, loud enough that some of the other patrons looked out way. But Macy was not one to be shy. Sure, she was stand offish, but that was because she didn’t like people. But she was never shy.
“I don’t know how you do it Blink, but I swear you get cuter each day.”
I blushed heavily.
“Hush, I’m trying to focus.”
She held her hands up in mock surrender. Seemingly she already knew what she was going to order.
“What about this? That’s got protein right?”
I pointed to it on her menu.
“A Falafel burger, sure, tons. You sure you’re up for trying it?”
“Mmm, it’s been a good day. I think I can handle a new food.”
“You two ready?”
“Umm yes, can we have one Falafel burger, fries on a different plate please. And I’ll take two of your lunch burritos and a salad for us to split.”
“You kids are hungry today, coming right up. Oh, Blinky the pastry of the day is apple fritters.” She addressed me.
“Apples!” I said, my eyes glowing.
She leaned in to whisper.
“I’ll put a few aside for you in a take out box.”
“You’re the best!” I smiled.
“Anything else to drink? Or just coffee today?”
I turned to Macy, “milkshake?” She grinned wide, “a strawberry milkshake with two straws please.”
“Coming right up. I’ll put extra whipped cream and a Cherry for each of you.”
“You’re a god send.” Macy complimented.
The woman blushed and hurried off to the kitchen.
“You’re only getting a milkshake cause you’ve been so good today. I’m proud of you for how you handled my family. They’re enough to drive anyone crazy”
I pouted.
“I’m always good.”
She rolled her eyes.
“Sure you are Blink, you’re like a little hurricane that sneaks up on people.”
I frowned.
“Oh come on Blink. You know you can’t have all this sugar all the time. You said you were studying medicine, you should know this.”
“Yeah yeah, so it could thicken my heart muscles. Fine, I’ll cut back on my sugar.”
“Wait really, that’s what happens?”
“Mmm, it increases your insulin and it has nowhere else to go.” I shrugged.
“And you still eat the way that you do? Doesn’t that scare you?”
“Not before you, no. And I didn’t have much of a choice. America is stupid, the things that are the worst for you are the cheapest and most readily available. I could buy a watermelon for $3.50 or I could get two boxes of cereal that will feed me for a week.”
“You mean for breakfast right?”
“Breakfast, lunch, dinner… it doesn’t matter, I used to ration one meal a day so I’m not really used to this whole, normal diet thing.”
Macy cringed.
“God Blinky, no wonder you’re so tiny. Your body never had anything to help it grow. The foods not going anywhere ok? You can eat as much as you want.”
“I know that, it’s just hard I guess. Old habits right?”
“Yeah.”
“So, tell me more about this cemetery.” I tried to pivot the conversation on me.
I knew she wouldn’t judge, but I didn’t like conversations focused on my flaws. It made me uneasy.
“Oh my god, you would love it there. It’s so quiet and the grounds keeper is really nice. There’s actually this crypt there a family and build in the early 1900s. They’re son had been missing for years and they thought he was dead, then he just showed up out of nowhere with no memories. Since he was alive, it never got used. He lets me go in there and write sometimes.”
“Wow, that does sound nice. Maybe I could read some of you writing sometime.”
“You gonna show me that drawing you did of me?”
“Eventually…”
“Then you have your answer.”
I rolled my eyes. Touché. The food came and Macy looked likes she had never seen food in her entire life. It was always funny to me how she could eat like there wasn’t enough food in the world. Miss G set the milkshake in the middle of the table.
“You two let me know if you need anything else.”
“Of course, thank you!” I said politely.
I stared at my food for a second, dissecting it with my eyes. Macy has already taken a bit out of one of her burritos. But she waited until her mouth wasn’t full to speak again. She slid some silverware across the table to me.
“Take off the top bun, it will be easier to cut.” She said.
I took the silverware and followed her instructions. I cut it into 6 neat pieces. And separated them on my plate.
“Ketchup?” I asked.
“Try a bite first.” She answered.
I nodded, slowly bringing the food to my mouth. The texture wasn’t what I was expecting, but it wasn’t bad. The flavour was nice, and I smiled into the bite. She looked at me expectantly and I gave her a thumbs up.
“Ketchup.” I concluded.
She let out a little snort from her nose, which made me scrunch mine in return. It was a adorable. I ate about half of it before I reached for the milkshake. It was much better. It was sweet, and cold and it felt nice on my tongue. Macy had mostly been drinking her coffee, and I had a sneaking suspicion she was trying to save most of it for me.
“You can have some you know, we did order to share.”
“You first.” She said.
“You know full well I’ll drink this whole thing by myself if you don’t stop me.” I teased.
“Ok, sassy. Fine I’ll have some.”
She moved the cup between us and sipped from her straw. It was like one of those classic scenes from those 50s movies. To top it off, she scooped up some whipped cream in her finger and put it on my nose. I pulled back, alarmed.
“You did not just-“
“I did, what are you gonna do about it?”
I took a French fry and threw it at her head, but she caught it in her mouth. I glared at her and she just laughed.
“Face it Blinky, you’re even sweeter than this milkshake.” She said.
“I hate you.”
“You love me.”
“I know.”
I moved my plate out of the way, and stabbed my fork into the salad. We got it with no dressing cause I hate dressing. It made the veggies also soggy. Gross. The crispy cucumbers were my favourite part. I was surprised to see Macy was already onto her second burrito. I think it had eggs and meat and cheese, I looked at it in disgust. I didn’t mean to show it on my face, but sometimes I couldn’t help it. Macy rolled her eyes.
“You enjoying the salad.”
“Very fresh.” I said.
She took a break from her monstrosity of a lunch to eat some of the salad with me. I had no idea how she wasn’t full already. I sipped my coffee, the contrast between it and the Milkshake were a little jarring. But it wasn’t bad. The caffeine would help. I’d been sober for almost a week now, and I wasn’t feeling the best. But Macy didn’t need to know about that. I recently learned her middle name was Josephine cause Tommy’s sign name for her was MJ.
He made mine “cute” but signed with a B for my name. How could I argue against it when he himself looked cute signing it. I didn’t want to break his heart, so I gladly excepted the name. It was easier than spelling out Blinky. Tiny’s name already had a sign, so he didn’t need a special one. Miss G came back and she down one pasty for each of us, while sliding the take out box into my backpack with a wink. I smiled at her as she was called away to help someone else.
“Hey M?”
“Yes?” She asked.
“What if I- no it’s stupid.”
“Nothing you can say is stupid Blinky. I say the same thing to Tommy all the time. You both need to be a little more confident.” She said.
“What if I worked here?” I asked.
“Here? It’s not that far from your house I don’t think. Not that I’ve been there yet.” She put emphasis on the last part, “it’s a bit of a walk though isn’t it?” She pointed out.
I hummed.
“But you’d look cute in the uniform.” She smirked.
Of course that’s what she would focus on. The only think more ferocious then her appetite, was her sex drive. And I had unknowingly unleashed that can of worms. Oops.
“I’d have to ask of course. But like, beats working at the gas station. And it’s small enough that even full it wouldn’t be too loud, not that it ever gets too full.”
“Can you handle a job?” She cringed, “I’m sorry that came out wrong.”
“No, no it’s fine. I’ve had plenty before. I think my family will be more lenient on chores if I’m bringing in more money. Plus there’s tips. Only tip we get at the gas station is a middle finger.” I laughed.
“Then go for it. I could come visit you at work.” She smiled.
“And you wouldn’t have to worry so much about me when you’re back home. Now we know they have something healthy I can eat.”
“That is very true.”
When we finished our meal I only had two pieces of my burger left, but I didn’t think it would heat up well. I looked at Macy.
“It’s ok little bug, you did good. I’m proud of you.”
I smiled, glad I was able to please her. I was surprised when she put a whole $20 on the table for tip. I raised a brow at her.
“Made some extra fixing up an old bike and a few days before you called. I’ve got some cash to spend, and she deserves it.”
“Don’t leave it on the table, sticky fingers around here.” I suggested.
We walked up to the counter and slid the money to Miss G.
“Aww thank you cuties, you didn’t half to.”
“Please for all you do for us, I did have a question though.”
“Shoot kid!”
“Are you guys hiring? I’d have to ask my dad but-“
“I would love to have you working here, you’d bring some smiles to this place. Let me go get the paperwork and you can think on it.”
“Thank you.”
We waited by the counter for a second, but that’s when a three boys walked in. Roughly around our age, maybe a little older than me. But they were the rowdy type, that much was evident from the laughter disturbing the peace. I tensed slightly but Macy rubbed her hand up my arm.
The came beside us to sit at the counter, and started hollering for some service. I rolled my eyes.
“Ain’t anybody working here or is it self service?” On of them called.
I grit my teeth, if I was gonna work here I’d have to deal with idiots like this. But they were no worse than the gas station idiots. But when she came back out to hand me my papers and one of the boys said something under his breath, o was beyond irritated. She didn’t deserve that.
“When you’re done serving that fine piece of ass over there, could you help a brother out?” One of the older looking boys said.
I saw his eyes on Macy and I was shaking. She wasn’t very pleased about it either. I said my thank you to Miss G and gave her a look of pity as she walked over to them. What I wasn’t expecting was for one of them to come over while his friends were order.
“You from around here sweetheart?” He asked Macy.
She rolled her eyes turning around.
“No, but my girlfriend is” she put emphasis on the girlfriend part.
I smiled smuggly.
“Why looking for something to do, afraid there’s not much. Why dont you and you’re friend check out Captain Spaulding’s Museum of Monsters and Madmen, if you’re up for a good scare.”
Macy gave me a look, recognising all the months ago when I told her to stay far away. She grinned.
“Yeah, if you’re man enough.” Macy teased him.
“Oh I’m man enough, we’ll check it out for sure. You two hotties gonna be there”
“You bet!” I sent a fake wink. “See you around handsome.”
Macy and I burst out laughing when we got outside.
“So do I finally get to see your Gruncle’s cabinet of curiosities?”
“We wouldn’t miss that for the world.” I grinned.
They deserved it for being rude or Miss G, and Ogling my girls ass.
“You ready for this?”
“As I’ll ever be I guess. Don’t take it to personally if they don’t like you at first. Otis hates everyone.”
She chuckled, “sounds a lot like Hoyt”
I froze, turning to look at her.
“He is nothing like that man.” I said coldly, I hadn’t meant to.
And I know she didn’t mean to insult him. But Otis was nothing like that Vile man Macy shared blood ties with.
“Sorry, that was meant to be a joke. Won’t happen again.”
“No, I’m- I’m sorry Macy I shouldn’t have snapped at you like that. I’m just a little on edge right now.”
“Blinky you don’t have to apologise for having emotions. You love your dad, and I love that you do.”
I smiled at her, getting onto her bike as usual as we rode back to the house. As we pulled up, I’m sure it was loud enough in the house no one had heard us. I grabbed Macy’s hand and lead her to the garden.
“Where are we going?”
“I gotta check on something first.” I said.
I dragged her around the side of the house, and sure enough there was some fresh dirt. We both stopped and looked down at it.
“Is that?”
“My mother, yeah. Rest in pieces I guess.”
Macy snorted and flipped off the pile of dirt. I couldn’t help but laugh along with her.
“Good, good to know that part of my life is over. I never want to think about her again if I can help it.”
I knelt down and started picking some of the lilies I’d planted a while ago.
“What are you doing Blink?” Macy asked curiously.
I held the flowers up to her.
“Gives these to Mama, than at the very least she’ll like you. If Mama likes you, no one is gonna dare disobey her. Not unless they got hit over the head a few to many times, so maybe don’t talk to RJ.” I joked, “that was a joke btw.”
“You’re cute.”
“So you keep saying.”
“It’s true though. And I’ll keep saying it because it makes you blush every time.”
“You’re evil, you know that woman? Total scum bag.” I said.
“Mmm, and do evil women get a kiss from their partner?” She mused.
“I don’t know, are you gonna be nice when we go inside?”
“I’ll think about it.”
“Then I’ll think about it.”
She rolled her eyes, setting the flowers down on the ledge near the house and picked me up, spinning me around. I couldn’t help but giggle, and when she finally stopped she pulled me in to a kiss. I melted into it, feeling all the stress leave my body.
“I’ll behave” she whispered, leaning down so her forehead was on mine.
“And I’ll protect you if anyone tries anything.”
“Aww, my little guard dog.”
I glared up at her.
“Come on, let’s get inside. I’m sure they’re worried about you. I would be too if you suddenly disappeared for 5 days.”
I cringed. Yeah not my best move. But I was glad none the less that Otis let me leave. It was nice to be away from the house for a while. I didn’t need to knock cause I had the house key. I pushed the door open and was immediately greeted by the chaotic sounds of my family. Baby was blasting music in the living room, I could hear Mama and Spaulding chatting in the kitchen, and I have no idea what the hell the others were doing at the back of the house but I could hear it from here.
I grabbed Macy’s hand and dragged her into the kitchen. Spaulding was the first to look up. One thing about him, he never forgot a face.
“Don’t I know you?” He addressed Macy.
“We met a whole back, at that farmers market. Blinky here sold me some of your chicken. Which was really good by the way.”
Smart move, Spaulding loved compliments. Especially about his cooking. He, Mama and Otis cooked the most in the house. Manon specialised more in dinner, and Selena sometimes helped with the prep work.
“These are for you Mrs. Firefly.” Macy held out the flowers and Mama gladly took them.
“Oh how sweet, we’re glad to have you Back Blinky. Why don’t you introduce us to your friend here?”
Mama was always hospitable. Which is why I went to her first.
“Mama, Cap, this is actually my girlfriend. Macy. I stayed with her while I was away.”
“Girlfriend?” Spaulding asked amused.
“Mhhhm, she knows about us.” I clarified so they wouldn’t have to lecturing about keeping someone around being dangerous. “She would never tell anyone.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes sir. My family participated in a similar… hobby.” She explained.
Sure saying you’re a killer is one thing, but I don’t blame her for not wanting to tell them right away.
“When did this happen?” Mama asked, ushering us both to sit.
“Since the Framers Market.”
“All that time and you kept ‘er a secret? Not sure how Otis is gonna feel about this.” Spaulding worried.
“That’s why I came to you both first.”
“You staying for dinner sweetheart?”
“If you’ll have me.”
“Of course Sugar, why don’t you go introduce her to the others. Make yourself at home little miss Macy.”
“Thank you Mrs. Firefly.”
“Please call me Mama.”
I gave Mama a quick hug, and kissed Spaulding on the top of his head.
“Can we talk later?” I asked.
“Sure kid, you know where to find me.”
Macy followed me into the living room where I turned down Baby’s music. Not off, just down a little. My head felt like it was buzzing from all the electric guitars. Baby turned to look at me, but her eyes quickly met Macy’s.
“Who’d ya bring for us Blink?” She asked.
I chuckled.
“She’s not for that, Baby, this is my girlfriend, Macy. Macy this is my- aunt? I don’t know we never really defined that.” I laughed awkwardly.
“Aunt, sister, all the same to me. Love this kid no matter what.” She said, holding her hand out to shake Macy’s.
“Can’t say I blame ya, they’re easy to love aren’t they?”
Baby smiled wildly, already approving of the new company.
“We miss ya Blink, it was no fun without ya.” Baby said, wrapping me in a tight hug.
“I’m sure you managed just fine, looks like you were having plenty fun before I interrupted.”
“Mhhhm, RJ got me a new CD!”
“What is he Santa Claus now? Why the sudden interest in gifts?” She shrugged. “You know where the others are?”
“Umm, Ghostie and RJ are watching a movie in his room. And Doe Eyes and Otis-“
“Doe Eyes and Otis what?” I asked suspiciously.
“They’re busy. I’ll let him know you’re home and he’ll come find you later yeah?”
“Alright…”
I squinted my eyes suspiciously.
“She staying for dinenr?”
“Your Ma said I could, that cool with you?”
“Totally cool! You’ll have to tell me where you got the jacket Macy!”
Before they could chat more I was dragging her upstairs to my room, and Baby was blasting her music again. I didn’t want to bother RJ, and there was something suspicious about Baby not telling me what my dad was up to. But we’d see everyone down at dinner so there was no rush. I closed the door and threw myself face down onto the bed, groaning into my pillow.
“I’d say it’s going pretty well Bumble Bee, you had nothing to worry about.”
“It’s not those three I’m worried about?” I said, looking up at her.
“I live with Hoyt, I can handle anything they throw at me. Promise.”
“Pinky?” I asked.
She held out her pinky and locked it with mine, sitting on the edge of the bed.
“You feeling ok Darlin’ you’re getting a little shaky there.”
“Yeah yeah, I’m cool… cool cool.”
“That sounds like something someone who is not cool would say.”
I sighed, crawling across my bed to lay my head on her lap.
“Why did she have to come here?” I asked.
Macy looked down at me, playing with one of my bouncy curls.
“I don’t know Blink.” She said sadly.
“It’s like everything was going good, great even. I was happy. So fucking happy!” I said.
“Did you just say fuck?” She raised a brow at me amused.
“Oh, right!” I said popping up and shoving a few bills in my sweat jar, “gotta pay up for what I said to Hoyt too. Even if he did deserve it.”
Macy chuckled.
“You say that like someone’s making you have the swear jar Blinky. Swearing ain’t that bad, I do it all the fucking time.” She smiled.
“Yeah yeah. I know there’s ways you can do it that aren’t mean, I just, I don’t like they way it sounds coming out of my mouth. Besides, a few more slip ups and I can get you something nice.” I smiled.
“You swearing on purpose to get something pretty for your girlfriend?” She asked.
“I’m just being lazy on purpose, the swearing is still an accident.” I laughed.
“I’m sorry your mom tried to ruin this for you, that wasn’t very nice of her.”
“No, it wasn’t.”
I sat back down on the bed next to her.
“Hey Macy?”
“Yes Blinky?”
I know she sometimes got amused when I said her name, even though we were already in the middle of the conversation. But I couldn’t help it. I liked the way her name felt on my tongue. Short and sweet, the exact opposite of her.
“Do you smoke? Like, smoke smoke?” I asked.
She seemed a little taken aback, but smiled anyway.
“I have before yes… why?”
“Do you want to?” I asked.
Now she was grinning from ear to ear.
“Why you got some?” I nodded.
“Honestly don’t think I can go back down there without it. Everything’s too much right now.”
She ran her hand along my arms again.
“Oh, and we should tell Spaulding that he’ll have some special guest at his showing after dinner tonight. Sure if you ask nicely he’ll let you help.” I said.
“You just wanna see me in action.” She mused.
“I will neither confirm or deny” I said, as I reached over in my drawer where some of my pre rolled joints were.
I made some mini ones, just to tell calm my mind on a regular basis. I didn’t want to be high everyday, but my sensory issues were not getting easier and it was the only thing that seemed to help. But I found a regular sized one jammed in the back. I grabbed a lighter from my nightstand and crawled back over to wear Macy sat. She laid down on her back, and I put my head on her stomach, laying perpendicular to her.
“Your family lets you smoke?”
“They know I do sometimes. Baby smokes too. Doe Eyes and Otis have regular cigs if you want one. I could snag a few for you.”
“My little thief” she ruffled my hair.
I was going to need to be actually stoned to survive family dinner. My nerves where getting the better of me. I mean I knew she was dead, we saw the evidence. So why did I still feel so heavy? So lost? Why the hell was I so scared? I didn’t notice tears start to slip until Macy’s big hands were on my face.
“Hey little bug, talk to me.”
I shook my head. Words were suddenly very hard.
“Hey, it’s ok, you’re ok. You’re safe.” She reassured me.
I gave her a pity smile. She reached over, grabbing the joint from my hand and lit it, holding it out to me. I weakly took a puff and laid back down, screwing my eyes shut. She took a hit herself, I couldn’t blame her if she was a little nervous. Anyone would be meeting my family. I know she tried to play strong and tough, but she was human like the rest of us.
She let my hair and held it out for me again. After a little while had passed and half the joint was gone, she spoke again.
“Feeling any better?”
I gave her a slow nod, signing a little.
“Are you non verbal right now Blinky?” She asked.
I was ashamed to say it, and I knew she’d figure it out eventually even if I didn’t tell her. I wasn’t very good about hiding what was wrong with me. And I didn’t want to have to hide it from her. I just wish it wasn’t there in the first place. That I wasn’t so broken and life wasn’t so much harder for me for no reason.
“That’s ok baby, you’re ok. Do you want me to tell them you aren’t feeling well and will skip dinner?”
I shook my head and sighed “Bad idea. You need food”
She playful glared at the irony of my comment.
“Yeah, you’re right. How about I do most of the talking tonight then? I think I can handle ‘em”
“Ok” I signed.
“And Blinky, it’s ok you didn’t tell me. But you don’t have to hide your autism from me ok? I’m actually pretty sure Tommy is on the spectrum too.”
I gave her a look that said “really?”
“Mhmm. But when you’re feeling better, you have to promise to talk to me more ok? I can’t read your mind, and you don’t have to suffer alone anymore ok? Everyone in this house right now wants what’s best for you, ok? I’m not gonna judge you Blinky, I love you.”
That was the first time she’d said it. I mean of course I knew it, and I felt it, and I hope she felt it too. But neither of us had said it seriously before.
“You love me?” I sighed.
“More than anyone I’ve ever known.”
I was able to stutter out a weak “I love you” before I felt too tired to speak again.
I swear it almost looked like she was about to smile too. She kissed the back of my hand, respecting that I was way too overstimulated right now.
“Just relax Darlin’ why don’t you try to nap and I’ll wake you when they say dinners ready?”
I nodded, closing my eyes and snuggling up to her. Weed dreams were always the strangest.
An: the ketchup thing is so funny to me cause I’m allergic 😭 damn my tomato allergy ruining everything! Will write the others meeting her next, this chapter was just getting kinda long lol.

"SHIT!" Your boyfriend, Matt yelps, nearly dropping the blunt from his lips as the sound of metal crashing fills your ears. A thick smoke began rising from the hood of the car, and soon enough the rest of you joined in on Matt’s irate attitude.
“Babe, pull over!”
Matt lets out a few curse words under his breath, as he follows your instruction and pulls the Chevy van to the side of the road. The five of you scurry out the vehicle, exposing yourselves to the Texan sun and heatwave.
Matt runs a hand through his feathered black hair while walking over to the front of the old, blue van. Popping the hood, he’s met with another batch of hot smoke, making him exclaim in disgust.
“Matt, you jerk! You just totaled my car,” Trin scoffs, fanning herself with her hand in a desperate attempt to cool down. The rest of the group, consisting of you, Matt, and your two other friends, stand on the rocky terrain on the side of the road, letting out exasperated groans.
“Relax, Trin,” Matt sneers defensively, taking another puff of his blunt. He examines the inside of the hood, his eyes squinting as he rubs the back of his neck. “Shit.. I think we popped.. or lost a valve or something.”
“We?” Trin raises her brow. The pair began bickering amongst each other, pointing fingers and only testing your patience. With their yelling and the sun beaming down on your skin, you prayed your migraine would kill you.
“Would you two just stop?” You sigh, pulling your shades over your head. “The car’s busted, doesn’t matter why. What do we do now?”
“Wait for help, I guess,” your friend, Shane shrugs, wrapping an arm around his girlfriend, Mary-Ann. Silence was casted among the group as you and your friends tried to think of a plan. Granted, the group was more Matt’s friends than yours— but what was his was yours, as Matt liked to pretend.
Your eyes trailed the scenery around you. The dead trees bordering the road, only a few desolate run down buildings nearby. The gas station, standing a few hundred feet, was falling apart at the seams. The shattered windows and creaking of the hanging “WE’RE CLOSED” sign was enough to crush your little hope. After a few agonising minutes, your eyes settle on a small house in the distance. You smile as you rise up, pointing to it and alerting the group.
“Guys!” You call out hopefully. “Let’s go ask them, maybe they can call us a toll or something.”
Shane furrows his brows, grimacing as he snicker. “You’re gonna go all the way to that shack? No, let’s wait here. Someone’s gonna come by soon.”
“Oh, c’mon,” your arms flap to your side, your head turns to glance at both ends of the road. “There’s not gonna be anyone driving here for who knows how long— it’s not gonna hurt to ask.”
“I dunno, girlie,” Mary-Ann purses her glossy lips, her voice monotone with a twinge of her Californian accent laced in. She scratches her bell bottom jean covered leg with her other foot as she turns her head to the house. “Maybe Shane’s right, I’m getting super bad vibes from that house.”
“Everything gives you bad vibes, you hippie,” Trin mocks, wiping the sweat from her forehead, shooting daggers with her eyes at the blonde. The two girls start trading insults, and the familiar ache in your head starts crawling back.
“Ok, well.. you losers can stay here,” Matt finally interjects with useful commentary, handing his half smoked blunt to Trin. “My girl and I will go and actually be useful,” Matt walks over to you, wrapping an arm around your shoulders as the pair of you walk through the field.
Tumblr media
AS THE TWO OF YOU APPROACHED THE HOUSE, Mary-Ann’s words rang in your ears. The cream coloured paint on the walls was faded or peeling off like a tangerine, the porch was dusty and cluttered with random items. The patio swing squeaked as the wind forced its swing, the copper shade of the metal would make you think this house was abandoned.
“Maybe blondie back there was right,” Matt jokes, nudging your shoulder playfully, only affirming your thoughts.
The closer you got, the colder the chills down your spine got. You pause in front of the stairs, leading up to a mesh screen door, barely exposing the inside of the seedy home. Your boyfriend’s hand leaves your arm as he takes initiative, walking up the creaky, old stairs. You cross your arms over your chest, watching as he knocks a couple times.
No answer.
He knocks again.
No answer.
“What now?” You ask with a scrunched face, softly slapping at the mosquito on your arm. Matt glances over to the swinging seats, and notices the half built fence that led somewhere behind the home. “Let’s just go back to the road—”
“Let’s check the backyard,” Matt ignores your comment, jumping down from the porch, the heels of his boots squishing into the damp grass as he heads for the back. You call his name repeatedly and he only waves his hand as his figure disappears behind the fence.
“Are you kidding me?” You mutter to yourself, as you sit down on the porch stairs, resting your chin on your knees. Minutes that feel like hours go by as you wait for your boyfriend to come back, and he’s still gone. The sun was going to set soon, and you’d rather get back to your friends before it got dark. Worry boils in your chest, and you chew on your nails anxiously waiting.
Suddenly, the mesh door bursts open, slamming against the nearby wall and making you yelp. You jump up, head whipping in the direction of the door and your eyes widen at the sight. An older, brawny man stands in the door frame.
His jeans were splattered with dust and a dark fluid, and his white wife-beater shirt was almost see through from the sweat trailing down his muscles. His coal, black eyes piercing into your doe eyes as he scans your figure, his eyes focused on your exposed legs. You swallow awkwardly, pulling the hem of your red, booty shorts down in an effort to cover more of your skin. You felt naked under his intense stare.
“Hi!” Your voice cracks as you smile, trying to appear friendly. The man’s face is unreadable as he leans against the door frame, eyeing you carefully. “Um.. sorry to bother you, sir. But, uh, my friends and I need some help. Our car broke down, and I was wondering if I could borrow your landline?”
The black haired man just stares at you, his stare occasionally darting down to your smooth legs before back to your face. He breathes deeply and tilts his head to the side, gesturing to his home.
“Yeah.. I got a phone you can use,” he spoke curtly with a slight southern drawl, before disappearing inside. You quickly follow the older man, skipping up the stairs as you gently pull the door open.
Instantly, you’re met with a putrid smell of meat. The humid stench feels worse than the outside, but you try to keep your grimace to yourself as you glance around the room. The entrance was cluttered with old frames, the walls had holes and scratches as if someone had clawed their nails off them.
“In here,” his baritone voice calls out to you and you follow it, leading yourself into the living room. Equally cluttered, if not more. The shabby, grey walls sucked any life out of the room and you tread cautiously to the older man who was sitting at a large dining room table.
His calloused hand brushed against yours when he handed you the landline. You smile politely before turning around as you dial the number for an automobile service. You hummed quietly to yourself while the landline rang next to your ear, not even noticing the older man standing right behind you, looking right down on you.
“Damn,” you hissed before putting the landline back. You turn around and jump again, your face immediately bumping against the man’s torso. “S-Sorry.. Didn’t know you were standing.. so close,” you mumble, your face flushing.
“Jumpy little thing, aren’t you?” The raven haired man wets his lips, picking up a dish towel from the table. “What’s your name, darlin’?”
You say your name softly, as heat blooms in your face. You can’t help but focus on his figure, the glistening of his biceps and the movement of his large hands as he wipes them with a towel makes your throat go dry.
“I’m John. You said your friend's car’s stuck somewhere, or what?” His baritone voice snaps you out of your ogling and you nod distractedly.
“Yeah.. yeah— it’s the chevy van out there. Dunno if you can see it,” you turn your head and point through the half broken window to the small car in the distance. John hums.
“Popped a tire?”
“No, it’s the hood. I think we, like.. lost a valve or something,” you say with air quotes, still focused on trying to see your friends.
“Pretty girl like you don’t have a boyfriend that could find it for you?” John teases, raising a brow as he catches a glimpse of the van. Your eyes widen at the compliment, and you clear your throat, a small smile etching onto your face.
“No.. I.. I don’t.”
“Don’t have a boyfriend, or don’t have one that could find it for you?”
Your eyes meet again and you let out a soft chuckle when John’s brow quirks up, a matching smile on his lips. You scratch the back of your neck and take a breath.
“N-No, I mean I have a boyfriend,” you correct yourself awkwardly, “he just.. can’t find it.”
“Bet there’s a lotta things that he can’t find,” John snorts under his breath and the innuendo goes straight over your head.
There’s a painful silence casted upon the room, and you shift your weight to your other leg as you stand there, gazing out the window. You furrow your brows in confusion when you realise you can’t see your friends by the van anymore.
The older man sighs and glances around the room. “I could take a look at it if you want. Just gotta go get my things,” he gestures behind him with his thumb and quickly turns to walk away. He’s gone before you could say anything, and you’re left alone in the room.
The sun shone through the crack glass of the windows, illuminating the dust particles floating through the air. Inspecting the antique living room, you analyse the framed pictures closer, even daring to pick up one of them. The cobwebs on the glass frame made you cringe as you gently brushed it away.
It was a picture of a family, all men standing in a line, all looked astonishingly similar to John. John stood in the middle, with two younger men on each side. He was holding a large butcher knife, and the entire family wore white aprons, stained with blood. The hanging pig in the background made you queasy. Perhaps it’s his brothers.. or his sons? You thought, slightly intrigued, and disturbed.
A muted cry, abruptly muffled by a low droning noise, broke your thoughts, immediately calling your attention outside the living room. Curious and naive as you were, you set the frame down. Your sandals slap against the wooden floor as you crept out the living room, and towards the door where the sound came from.
The door was unlike the others— covered in a strange fur, and chains on the handle, and slowly squeaked open, almost urging you to investigate further. The droning noise gets louder, and sounds of shackles and screaming fill your ears and strike fear in your heart.
“(Y/N), help!”
Colour drains from your face, and against your better judgement, you slam the mysterious door open at your boyfriend’s desperate call of your name. The door revealed a staircase, with sunlight barely shining on the first step as it leads to darkness.
Tumblr media
You tiptoe cautiously down the stairs, the sounds of horror growing louder and louder as it echoes through the dim, damp basement. Water leaks from the pipes above, small sounds of the water pattering only makes the hair on your neck stand up as you edge closer to the sounds. Stopping right in front of another door, a dark liquid begins to pour out from the bottom, and your jaw drops.
“M-Matt?” You call out, lower lip wobbling.
The lively roaring of the chainsaw abruptly stops.
Thud.
A blood curdling scream escapes your lips when the door is slammed open and your boyfriends body slumps to the floor. His feathered black hair, now matteted with his own blood as his baby brown eyes rolled to the back of his head. Matt’s denim jacket was torn to shreds, along with his matching denim jeans— the blood poured endlessly out of his massacred body, washing over the entire floor and staining the bottom of your shoes.
“Oh.. Oh my god!” You shrill, a trembling hand hovering over your mouth and your eyes fill with tears. Horror and nausea wash over you in waves, as bile boils in your throat. You cower backwards, practically tripping over yourself as you hurry to get away from the source of this terror.
The chainsaw wielding maniac turns to face you, and reveals himself to be one of the boys in the picture. The same sick smile on his face as he pulls the chain of the weapon, the thunderous howl of the chainsaw coming back to life.
Suddenly a pair of muscular arms wrap around your waist, lifting your frail frame off the ground and you let out a terrified shriek. Kicking and screaming, your feet meet the ground and your back is pressed tightly against a toned chest. Lips brush against your ear, and the eerie words invited goosebumps on your skin.
“It’s awfully rude to snoop, darlin’”
You let out another painful scream as you realise it’s John— John and his deranged family responsible for this massacre of Matt. His calloused hands roam your torso, groping at your skin and holding you firmly against his sweaty chest.
“Theodore…” John’s voice is low as he scolds his apprentice, who stands in front of you two, his cherub face doused in the blood and tears of your boyfriend, a twisted grin etched on his lips. “You’re scarin’ our guest.”
The younger man just laughs maniacally, dropping his weapon to the ground, and the loud thud of the chainsaw makes you whimper. You squirm helplessly in John’s grip, but your attempts to escape were fruitless. “Let me go! Let me go, you psychos!” Your voice is hoarse and your face flooded with tears.
“Aw, I don’t think so, darlin’,” John’s beard scratches against your cheek, his constricting grip on you nearly crushes your lungs.
“I think we’re gonna keep you a little longer— show you that real southern hospitality.”
Your screams and cries for help are drowned out by the two madmen’s deranged laughter and taunts.

Macy’s POV:
Hoytt was getting on my last fucking nerve today, I swore to myself that one more comment and I’d send his head flying through the wall. Why were the men on my family all such perverted bastards? Monty wasn’t much better, crazy old man. But at least I had Thomas, the one thing that kept me someone sane in this place.
He was a great brother, probably better than I deserved. When our Mother didn’t give me attention, he would make the time for me. And that meant more to me than he’d every probably understand. I stomped down to the basement where he as hard at work. His chainsaw was revving, so I chose to wait by the door as to not startle him. It was almost funny sometimes, how someone like him could be so skittish.
“Need some help with that?” I asked with a smirk on my face.
Thomas turned to look at me, mask still on. He kept it on with victims, even though I told him it didn’t really matter. They were gonna die anyways, who cares if they see his face. “The face only a mother could love” people would say, but I think that’s utter bullshit. So my brother has a few deformities, that doesn’t mean he’s unworthy of love.
He set down his chainsaw and I walked over to admit his work. The poor bloke on the table was missing all 4 limbs but still very much breathing. I could hear his muffled scream through the rag shoved in his mouth. I shot a glare at the victim.
“Please, keep screaming… see how much you like it when I rip out your tongue.”
I was in no mood for this bullshit today. Why did they always have to be so loud? With all the begging and pleading, as if I’d suddenly grow a second heart .
“Upset?” Thomas signed.
I sighed heavily.
“Hoytt.”
I didn’t need to say much else, Thomas understood. I mean Hoytt wasn’t even nice to him either. Luda was the only one who could shut that man up. And I thanked my lucky stars that she put him in his place often.
“Walk? Feel better.”
“I’m not sure if I’m up for a walk today Tommy. Besides you’ve got a lot of work cut out for you by the looks of it. Don’t want that meat rotting and going bad.”
He gave me a sad nod.
“You need to have fun, I’ll finish your chores.”
“No, Thomas you don’t have to do that. It’s fine.”
But he wouldn’t budge. Both literally and metaphorically. He wouldn’t let me leave his basement until I promised to go do something fun.
“Maybe I’ll go for a drive, see where it lands me before I run out of gas.”
He gave me a look as if to ask ‘is that a good idea?’ But I couldn’t think of anything better to do.
“I’ll be fine Thomas, maybe a few days out of town will do me good. I mean what’s Lud- mom, going to do? Hold down the house while I’m gone? Hoytt May thinks he runs shit around here, but you’re the man of the house Tommy.”
I gave my brother a kiss on the cheek of his mask. I wasn’t usually one for affection, but I couldn’t help it when it came to Thomas. He was just so kind and sweet, something you wouldn’t expect from this family. A bunch of redneck hillbillies with murderous, cannibalistic tendencies. Yet here we had this gentle giant. A man the world is lucky isn’t filled with rage like I was. Thomas killed to follow orders, to protect his family and keep us well fed.
But I killed for a much different reason. The thrill, the adrenaline rush. A dangerous game of cat and mouse that could go on as long as I say so. Running a victim out of steam for days until they’re basically begged me to kill them. Making them submit to my every will. It was an intoxicating feeling that got you high.
“See you around Tommy, yeah?”
He gave me a sad look.
“It’s only a few days, you’ll be fine.” I assured him.
If I came home to find Hoytt or Monty upset him again, those men would have hell to pay. My loyalties stood with my brother and my brother alone. I wouldn’t bat an eye if someone splattered the others brains onto the pavement. Of course, Thomas would be upset, which is the only reason I haven’t done it myself yet. I was sick and tried of them trying to order me around. I helped plenary around here, yet it was never enough.
I packed a small backpack with some cash I’d saved, and a few spare clothes. I hoped onto the back of my Harley, one’s I’d rescued from the junk yard and repaired, and headed off in a random direction. Just driving and clearing my head until I found a town that piqued my interest. Ruggsville Texas. It was only on my radar because people had been reporting a higher amount of disappearances recently. And I was sure this town was harbouring secrets.
I stopped at a little motel on the side of the road, not wasting my time with pleasantries and instead choosing to pick a lock and break into one of the many vacant rooms. If I kept the shades drawn, the likely wouldn’t even notice me here. The door was wide enough for me to walk my motorcycle inside, as to leave no trace to my existence. Even if someone did discover me, I could always kill then and flee back home. I wasn’t completely opposed to that idea.
I locked the door and threw myself down on the king sized bed. It was still a bit small, but you got used to it. I felt bad for people who were even taller than I am. I didn’t even bother to change into night clothes, instead choosing to just kick off my pants and go to bed.
The sun was overly obnoxious in the morning, shining through the slight gap in the curtain. I groaned, hurling myself up from the end and going to the shower. I nearly laughed to myself when I say how short the shower head was. Thomas and I had built the shower in our home so that we could actually properly use it. We also put a pool noodle on the frame going downstairs to the basement, Thomas kept hitting his head on it.
I left my hair down, letting it dry in its natural state. There was a slight wave to it, not quite curly but not totally flat. At least I got Luda’s hair gene instead of my fathers. Thomas was blessed with good hair too. I decided I would drive into the main part of town today. As I drove around, I spotted a little blocked off street. Some sort of vending festival. It could be cool, I could get something nice for Tommy on my trip. A silent apology for leaving him alone at home. I parked my bike, hiding it in the alleyway and started walking around.
There were a few food stalls, some art exhibits and random assortments of knickknacks. This town seems kinda homey which was a nice change of pace. It was still brutally hot in the Texas summers. I wore black mom jeans and a tight black tank top. I had a hair tie on my wrist in case I got fed up, or it got too warm. One stall in particular caught my eye. They had a bundle of balloons tied to a little chair.
But that wasn’t what really caught my eye, no, it was the person on that chair. Even from this far away, I could tell it wasn’t just perspective making them look small. What the hell was someone like that doing out here alone? Their hair was huge and fluffy, it wasn’t often you saw black people down south wearing their natural hair. I didn’t know a lot about black culture, but all the ladies are Luda’s church either straightens their hair, or wore wigs. Their Afro was sort of adorable, like an unapologetic way to say ‘fuck you’ to societal beauty standards.
I hadn’t realised I was staring, until their eyes met mine from across the lot. And I swore my heart almost stopped. Now that I could see their face, they were genuinely adorable. They had some sort of face paint on, reminiscent of a clown. They gave me a quick smile, before going back to mining their table. I didn’t want to be too obvious, so I pretended to look at other things as I drew closer. Curiosity getting the best of me.
I could see their outfit more clearly now. It was similar to those old fashioned Circus costumes. With a Black and White almost Harlequin pattern. They had on combat boots with mismatched shoelaces on them. Their skin glowed under the hot Texas sun, a thin sheen of sweat on their brow. A man in a similar costume and makeup up walked up to the both, whispering something to them before leaving. I watched as he walked away, driving off in a truck. Odd.
But their interaction started to make sense when I saw them start packing up the tiny booth. They seemed to be selling food, I could smell it even from here. And honestly it was mouth watering. So I finally got up the nerve to approach them. They looked up from packing when they noticed me. I watched as their Addams apple bobbed slightly. They were nervous, but I was used to getting that sort of reaction.
“I know you’re packing, but I was wondering what you were selling.” I asked.
They just stared at me for a money, their eyes wide and glossy, like they forgot how to talk. I was about to just walk away, worried I scared them too much, when they finally spoke.
“Umm, yeah. My Gruncle and I were selling some of his famous fried chicken. Needed a bit of extra cash since people don’t stop by our store often. But rich white people love coming to these sort of things.” They rambles.
It was cute, watching them stutter and stumble over their words as they tried not to look at me.
“What’s a Gruncle?” I laughed.
I didn’t mean to laugh at them, but it was such an odd word.
“Grandpa-Uncle. Cause we call grandpa, Grandpa, but he’s my Great Grandpa and I don’t want to get them confused.”
I couldn’t help but smile at that. God, I haven’t smiled in so long. I was worried my face was fixed in a permanent scowl. Only time I smiled like that was when Tommy and I got a day off and could hang out in the old abandoned apple orchard.
“I guess that makes sense, got any left?”
They pushed the aluminium tray forward.
“Take it, it’s on the house. Can’t stand being near the stuff anyway.”
Odd, why would they sell it if they hated it. The packed the rest of the stuff into a little milk crate. But it looked huge in their tiny hands.
“Are you sure? I have cash.” I said.
The shook there head.
“It was just gonna go in the trash anyway.”
“Macy.” I offered, reaching out my hand.
They just stared at it for a while, before meeting my gaze again.
“Blinky.”
I dropped my hand when they didn’t attempt to shake it. Blinky, what an odd name. Perhaps it was a nickname of sorts. They seemed to think for a second, pausing with their back turned to me, before turning back around.
“Hey, I don’t know if you’re from around here or not. But steer clear of Captain Spaulding’s Museum of Monsters and Madmen.” They warned.
That was their first mistake, because now I was curious. I stood by the booth awkwardly as they walked over to a bicycle and strapped the milk crate to the front of it. We’re they about to ride around in this heat, wearing that? My stomach growled as the smell of chicken was becoming overwhelming. It made me wish I was at home to eat Tommy’s cooking. But I couldn’t eta right now, not in-front of them. I was a completely different person when I was hungry.
I looked back up as I heard them walking towards me again, and lunged forward when I saw them stumble over their own feet. I caught them easily with one hand.
“Woah there!” I said, stabilising them.
Sure, she was already on her feet, but I didn’t want to let go of them just yet. And it seemed she didn’t mind either.
“Th-thanks.” They blushed furiously.
“Are you ok? You just tripped over nothing.” I laughed.
It wasn’t meant to come out so harsh, my intent was more teasing. They pushed themself out of my arms, crossing their arms over their chest and huffing. It was entirely adorable. God what was she doing to me?
“I’m fine, I got it stranger!” The snapped at me.
I was pleasantly surprised they had that much bite in them.
“I didn’t mean to-“
“It’s fine, don’t worry about it. That wasn’t nice of me, I’m just tired of everyone treating me like I’m a a child.”
“Are you not?” I laughed.
Surely they must be.
“I’m 18!” They said exasperated.
My brain began to short circuit. My intentions were much more pure when I first decided to approach them. Curious what a child was doing out here. I was shocked to find they were only three years younger than me. God she was adorable, I doubt if I left now I’d even be able to forget this little encounter.
“I’m sorry.”
I doesn’t know why I said it. I had nothing to apologise for, and even if I did, I wouldn’t do it. Apologising meant admiring guilt, and that was an emotion I was incapable of feeling.
“Let me help you with that!” I quickly added.
I was used to being useful. Thomas and I basically splitting the house hold chores 50/50. Monty couldn’t do much, and Hoytt was out on petroleum or down at the station most days. I easily picked up the table, folding the legs in and hoisting it over my head. They stared up at me in awe, a reaction I was hoping for. Hoytt would make fun of me if he saw me now, helping a gentle stranger and trying to impress them.
“Where to?” I asked.
“Ummm-“
They seemed to be panicking now. Maybe I had over stepped.
“Gas station, a little ways down the road. It’s kinda a long walk.”
The grabbed their bike, walking it along side me as we made our way down the road. Most of the walk was in a comfortable silence. I wasn’t really sure what to say. But I enjoyed their company more than I thought I would. I noticed her stealing little glances at me, and smirked. They brought me around back the building.
“Here, you can just drop it here. My Gruncle will take care of it later. Umm, I don’t have any extra cash to pay you.” She said.
“Don’t worry about it.”
“Are you sure? I could go run inside and grab you a soda or something.”
I was quite thirsty. But I had a better idea.
“I’m not much of a soda drinker. Maybe we could get a coffee.” I asked.
I’d grown quite good at flirting. It was an easy way to lure in vapid teenage boys for the kill. But I had to use a different strategy here, my flirting was sincere in this moment. They intrigued me to say the least. I was surprised when they quickly agreed, but they just seemed anxious to get as far way from the gas station as possible.
I followed after them, surprised by how fast they were with their legs being that short. My brain thought of what it would be like to chase them, but I quickly shoved that thought to the back of my head. She did nothing to be deserving of that side of me.
“There’s no coffee in town, did you drive her?” They asked.
I nodded.
“Yeah, we could take my motorcycle.”
Perhaps it was a little naive of them to go to a second location with me. But I found it endearing, when normally I’d find it annoying. I’ve barely even had a full conversion with this girl and they were already changing my whole mood. I’d long forgotten about the nasty comments Hoytt has spewed at me. I was pissed at him for murdering my last girlfriend, and feeding her to me without my knowledge. Something about “repenting in the eyes of god.” Maybe I hadn’t loved her, but she was a good lay. She always knew how to calm me down.
“You drive a motorbike? That’s so cool!” They beamed.
There was no sarcasm laced in their tone, they seemed genuinely impressed by this fact. I mean if that’s all it took to get them excited, then this would be easy.
“So, what’s with the clown thing?” I cringed at myself, quickly correcting my mistake, “it’s fun.” I added.
“You think so? I’ve always sort of admired clowns. They say laughter is the best medicine and I couldn’t agree more. I love laughing.”
Every sentence had me fighting with myself internally to not just throw them over my shoulder right now. My heart was beating faster and my skin was itching. But that wasn’t right or me, I couldn’t rush this. No I wanted to saver my time away in this quaint little town. And it seems Blinky was the only one worth while in this shit hole. If I ruined that now, I’d kick myself.
“You got any jokes?”
They shook their head no.
“I’m not very good at telling them RJ says. Do you have any?”
I’m went sure who this RJ was, but I already didn’t like them. I thought for a moment, trying to see if I remembered any jokes. We’re we’re nearly halfway back to wear I parked my bike now. Was I seriously considering trying to make a joke just to get an inkling of their laugh? This is not how I expected this trip to go at all. My plan was to stroll into town, kill a few locals no one would miss and then go back home.
But did that place ever really feel like home? Sure I lived there, but I hated it. I hated that house, hated my family. Thomas and I could go anywhere and I’d be home. He was just to chicken to leave, get rid of that old bat who for some ungodly reason he shared affections for. They would be nowhere without the two of us doing everything for them. And all they showed me in return was trying to send to to conversion camp when I was a teen. Fuckers. Suddenly I felt a hand on my arm, it was dainty and delicate.
“Hey you ok? You don’t have to tell me a joke if you don’t want to. Being funny isn’t easy.” They attempted to console me.
“Yeah, no I’m good. Just got lost in thought I guess. Ok, so how about this: I have a stepladder because my real ladder left when I was just a kid.” I tried.
Sure my delivery wasn’t perfect, but I couldn’t help it. They somehow simultaneously made more more confident, yet nervous at the same time. The slowly dropped their hand from my arm and I had to stop myself from whining at the lack of touch. Why was I so god damn horny right now? It had been months since I’d been this psychically close to someone .
She placed a hand over her mouth and let out a small stifled giggle. It was possibly the cutest fucking sound I’d ever heard in my entire life, and I was desperate to hear it again.
“Same, except my dad used the ladder to leave.” They laughed.
It took me a second to understand their joke. I could see how someone could think they aren’t funny, their jokes seem to just require a little bit of thought.
“Oh my god.” I laughed, but I quickly sobered up as we continued walking, “was that just for the joke or…” I was bit concerned with how flatly they said it.
They shook their head no again. It made their curls bounce wildly.
“I was the one who found him. But don’t worry, it’s funny, you can laugh. I don’t blame him, I’d do the same if I had to be married to my mother.”
“Still, that’s a coward move. I can’t imagine someone finding any justification to leave you.” I said smoothly.
They bit at their bottom lip, almost hard enough to draw blood.
“Ok, umm my turn. So this woman goes to the hospital right? And she says ‘sorry I’m just nervous, this is my first surgery’ and the doctor looks her dead in the eyes and says ‘mine too.’”
They way they smiled up at me like they were so proud made my stomach flip.
“That’s awful” I laughed.
“I have one more,” I started, we were almost to the alley now, A child determined to burn his home down. His dad watched, tears in his eyes. He put his arm across the mother and stated, “That’s arson.”
“Arson?” They scrunched their brow in confusion, “oh, our son, arson! I get it now! You’re so funny!” They complemented.
“I wouldn’t go that far, you’re just easy to impress.”
Another sentence I hadn’t meant to turn into an insult. I wasn’t very good at this whole “being nice” thing.
“Well, this is me.” I said pointing to my bike.
I had put the small container of chicken in my backpack earlier. I strapped my bag down to the side of my bike.
Tumblr media
“Wow!” They said, their voice somehow raising during a single syllable.
“You like? Built her myself.”
“You built this?”
“Mhhmm” I hummed proudly.
“You’re amazing!” They said softly under their breath.
“Hop on, I got a spare helmet.”
They hesitated, maybe they finally realised this wasn’t a good idea. I mean I was going to hurt her, but she didn’t know that. They started fidgeting with their hands and I frowned.
“Getting cold feet?” I asked.
I couldn’t help but be smug, I’m an asshole by nature. It just helped to mask my concern.
“Ummm, no, I really want to go get coffee it just” they pointed to their hair.
“I don’t think this will fit in a helmet.”
I couldn’t help the cackle that escaped me. That’s what they were worried about? Their hair? Not that fact that I could snap their neck with one hand without even trying. Or I could be taking her somewhere to kill her.
“How about this, you ride front and I’ll be sure to hold you right and keep you safely on the bike.”
“Ok!”
I watched as they struggled to try and get on, my bike had larger wheels so it was higher off the ground. It make it easier for me to ride. I stifled a chuckle in the back of my throat,
“Let me.” I said, picking them up and placing her on my bike.
I had to admit, this sight wasn’t exactly helping with my cloudy thoughts. I did my best to keep them pure, but I wasn’t fooling anyone. I was a Hewitt by blood, we don’t exactly pair well with purity. I straddled my leg over the side, scooting closer to them. I warped my arms around them reaching for the handles, and used my leg to pop up the kickstand.
“Just hold on right to the Center piece ok? What direction are we going?”
“It’s about fifteen miles north, first left on after the exit. You can’t miss it.”
I revved the engine and I could feel them tense a little.
“Relax little rabbit, this will be fun.” I cooed.
When I felt them lean back into me, I sped off down the road. I could hear the sounds of their joyous laughter over the sound of the wind and my engine. When we finally came to a stop outside of a little dinner, they were still giggling happily.
“I’ve never gone that fast before.” They laughed.
“We can go even faster on the way back. Not like there’s any pigs out here to stop us.”
“Pigs?” They asked curiously, trying their best to turn to look at me.
Even sitting down I was so much taller than her.
“Cops, it’s a little inside joke with me and my family. Ain’t much law in my town either, but when they do come around they’re always in our business.”
“We’ll that doesn’t seem fair.” They frowned.
I hoped off the bike, putting the kickstand down. Then reached out my hand to help them off.
“Greta behind the counter is super sweet, she lets me drink coffee for free since I fixed her back door. Her ex tried to break into her house and nobody from town would help her.” They explained to me.
I never pegged her as someone who was good with tools. I was sort of impressed.
“That was nice of you.”
“My sister always says we girls have to protect our own.”
“You have a sister?” I asked as we stepped through the door.
“Two now, Manon is still… adjusting.”
I could tell it was a sensitive subject so I didn’t push further. But what did they mean by “now” and “adjusting”, perhaps her parents fostered kids? But if it was that simple, why wouldn’t they just say that. The man from earlier looked nothing like her, so it wouldn’t be an unfair assumption to make that they were adopted.
“Blinky! How’s my favourite little trouble maker?” The woman who was supposedly Greta greeted.
She was a short and pudgy black lady, her hair graying. But she seemed nice, Blinky seemed to like them. But I wasn’t sure if that meant much, I mean Blinky seemed to trust me, when they had no reason too. Which concerned me, was she this trusting with every stranger? I mean we were about a half an hour drive away from wherever she must live, and she didn’t seem anxious in the slightest.
“Who’s this?” Greta’s voice brought me out of my head.
“Oh, this is my new friend Macy! She’s visting from out out town. We were wondering if we could get some coffee” Blinky leaned over the counter in a hushed tone and said “and the good stuff.”
Before looking back at me and smiling, I raised a brow amused.
“I do believe I can do that for you little miss. Your booth is empty.”
“Yay, you’re the best G!”
She grabbed my hand and dragged me to a booth in the farthest corner of the little dinner. There was less lighting over there.
“What’s the good stuff?” I asked
“Pastries they have to throw out at the end of the day. Greta sometimes sneaks me some. Oh, you should probably eat your chicken, it might be a little cold by now, but I don’t know if the place you’re staying has a fridge or not.”
How thoughtful.
“Are we allowed outside food?” I asked.
They giggled once again.
“You don’t really seem the type to care about rules.” They said bluntly.
And I couldn’t argue with that. I slid the container out of my backpack and pushed it onto the table. They seemed really fidgety but I couldn’t tell if it was a nervous thing, or if they were just like that. I don’t know why, but I felt compelled to ask them. I always hated when Thomas would get anxious. He’d start picking at the skin around his finger nails until there was nothing left.
“Are you good?” I asked.
Cursing myself once again for coming off so harsh and abrasive.
“Yeah, why? Is something wrong?” They asked.
“You just seem, antsy is all.”
“Oh, sorry. It’s just, there’s a few more people in here tonight than there usually are. This place is pretty dead most of the time.”
So they were nervous in crowds, interesting.
“I guess that makes sense, you seem to like it here.”
“Well I’m not allowed in town by myself very often.”
That made sense, they were tiny, anyone could just pick her up and steal her away if they wanted to.
Greta set down two mugs, and a plate that looked like raspberry danishes.
“Enjoy you two.” She smiled.
“That’s Greta, I owe you one.”
The older woman brushed her off with a kind smile. Blinky happily sipped their black coffee, and I was surprised. I expected them to at least put sugar in it.
“Did you need some cream or something?” They asked.
“What? No, no this is fine.” I said.
God, I really had to stop zoning out staring at them. But I couldn’t help it, they were just so damn adorable. I kept thinking that Thomas would love them. But they’re probably be scared of him, as most people were. I took a sip of coffee, letting it warm my insides, before my eyes wandered to the box of chicken. I was starving. I quickly ripped it open and began eating, not really noticing how I was practically scarfing it down. It was surpassingly really good. I only noticed I finished have the box when I looked up to find her staring. I feel a little embarrassed.
She silently help out a napkin for me.
“Thanks.” I said.
“So what do you think? Of the chicken” they clarified.
“It’s good, you said your uncle made it?”
“Gruncle.” They corrected.
“Right, Gruncle.” I laughed.
“Yeah, he’s surprisingly a good cook. He had a laughing fit when I told him I was vegetarian.”
“Oh?”
“He thought I was joking. I was not.”
They seemed to not pick up very well on subtle teasing, so I decided to slow down on that front. Not sure if they’d ever take offence to one of my jokes.
“So do you just not like meat, or are you one of those hardcore veggie people?”
“I just don’t like the taste much. Plus I couldn’t imagine killing a sweet little cow. I mean have you seen the one with little curly hair? I cry every time. My rule is if I wouldn’t kill it, I don’t eat it.”
‘Wouldn’t eat anything they wouldn’t kill’ that was an interesting choice. I couldn’t stop my brain from corrupting that thought, wondering what would happen if I pushed them to try my families diet.
“I know that look” they said.
“Huh?”
“You’re thinking something bad… what is it?” They asked.
Their words seemed idly curious, but their tone told me otherwise. That wasn’t a question, it was a demand. Something I didn’t expect. It was interesting how they could so easily go from puppy dog eyes and smiles, to a commanding sort of ominous tone.
“Nothing you need to concern yourself with. It’s stupid.” I said.
“Really, cause that smile on your face said otherwise. You enjoyed that thought.” They pushed.
“Perhaps I don’t want to throw out all my aces on a first date.” I turned the conversation back on her.
Two could play this game. And oh what a dangerous one it was. They had no idea what they were getting into with me.
“So this is a date then?”
“One were neither of us are paying, so I’d say it’s the best one I’ve ever had.” I joked.
They laughed, dropping their icy stare. Letting their guard fall again.
“Date. I think I like the sound of that.” They concluded happily, tearing a piece off the pastry and shoving it into their mouth. “Not as much as you like that chicken though.”
“Leave me alone, I’m hungry.” I grumbled.
They pushed the rest of the pasty toward me. A silent offering. I gladly took it with a smile.
“Wait here!” She said suddenly.
I watched as they leapt up from the table and snuck their way past a waitress and into the kitchen. What the hell was she doing. A few minuets later they snuck back out of the kitchen with a plate piled with food.
“Hope you don’t mind your food touching. I had to be quick so no one saw me.”
This girl really just stole food for me. I think I’m in love. I felt like a silly little teenager again. If Hoyt could see me right now, he’d never let me live this down. And Tommy would be swooning with me. He had liked my previous girlfriend, before the incident.
“I don’t mind a bit” I grinned.
It seemed she didn’t care that I wasn’t proper with my food. I wasn’t a slob, by any means, but was it a sin to enjoy good food? People like my brother and I had to eat a lot. I always felt sluggish and crappy when I had to wait a while for food. They must have noticed my hesitation because they spoke again.
“It’s ok, I like watching you eat.”
It was almost comical how wide their eyes got after that, and I couldn’t bite back my laugh.
“Not in a weird way or anything, you just seem to be enjoying yourself. It’s nice.” They quickly added.
“I am.”
“Good. Now eat up before it gets cold. I have to sneak the empty plate to the dishwasher. I don’t want Greta to get in trouble for the missing food.”
The rest of the meal was mostly in silence. I swore they must have had about seven cups off coffee. How were they not crawling out of their skin right now. I distracted the cook by flirting so they could slip back in through the door undetected, then they met me out back by the dumpster.
“You’re really good at that.” I commented.
“Perks of being fun sized I guess.”
Could they possibly be more cute? I mean the clown costume was adorable, but I wondered what they looked like normally.
“Hey Blinky?”
“Hmm?”
“Do you always dress like this?”
“Oh, this? Ummm kinda. I mean I wanted to be extra fancy today to make a good impression at the farmers market. But sometimes I’m more causal I guess.”
Normally when people thought of ‘fancy’ it was cocktail dress and pearls or suits.
“Why, does it look bad? I guess I could have been a little neater on the seems, but my sewing machine is ancient and doesn’t like to cooperate very much.”
“You made this?”
“Uh huh! I based it off of one of Mama’s vintage soap operas. The main character was more of a mime, but I don’t know how to make a Barrett yet so I just simplified it to be like a vintage clown.”
“You’re adorable you know that?”
I could practically see the blood rush to their cheeks. As they furiously tried to rub it away, only serving to make them cuter in my eyes. They were embarrassed.
“Would you like me to drive you home?”
“No, you can’t go to the house.” They exclaimed quickly.
I suppose that made sense, we’re still didn’t know ecagitehr very well. It’s not smart to give people your address.
“Not that that wouldn’t be nice, thank you for offering. But my families very… private. Umm but you could drop me off down the road and I’ll walk the rest of the way.”
“Alright.”
I could tell they were hiding something, and my mind raced with a million reasons why. I settled on perhaps their family was homophobic. I mean we’re we’re in Texas, that wasn’t uncommon. Even my own family was pretty bad about it, all expect Tommy. He was the glue that held us together, and the only thing keeping me from leaving. I drove to the spot they asked me to drop them off. Driving faster on the way back as I had promised.
“I wish I could go that fast on my regular bike.” They said.
I chuckled. They turned to look at me, but their eyes looked sad.
“I gotta go before my Dad comes out looking for me. I didn’t tell anyone I was gonna be out so they’re probably really mad.”
I frowned.
“I didn’t mean to-“
“No, no it’s not your fault. I wanted to go. This- this was fun. Perhaps if you’re staying in town a few days…”
“I would love to hang out with you again.” I calmed their nerves.
“I usually finish my chores before 5pm. Meet me back here tomorrow?”
“Sure.”
They started to walk away but I stoped them.
“Hey Blinky?”
“Yeah?”
I held out one of my switch blades for them.
“Maybe if we’re going to continue meeting in dark alleys, you should have something to protect yourself with.”
The took the knife slowly, examining it.
“I can’t take this, it’s yours. And it looks expensive.” They frowned.
“I insist. Wouldn’t want to find my date bleeding out in an alley somewhere.” I joked.
“Yeah, I guess that would kinda ruin things wouldn’t it? I’ll see you around Macy. Thank you, for today I mean. It was perfect.”
I did a fake bow before watching them disappear into the dark. I wouldn’t be getting much sleep tonight, far too excited about this new development to sleep. But I was itching for a taste of something more. I’m sure I could find some sorry sap out here to kill tonight. Stop me from running after Blinky and scaring them off.
Blinky’s POV:
I waited until I was out of sight and I heard her bike drive off into the distance, before I let out a little happy dance. Sure, I’d had crushes before, little in content ones. But they always seemed to disappear. I wasn’t stupid, I knew what happened to them. That’s why I would have to keep Macy a secret. Keep her far, far away from my family.
I mean she looked like she could handle a fight. But I didn’t want my family getting hurt either. I sighed in frustration. She was different from anyone who ever came to this town. She was tall, beautifully handsome, funny, smart. And she gave me her knife. But little did she know how perfect a gift it was. I got sad when I thought about long term. It inevitably wouldn’t work out and one or both of us would end up with our hearts broken.
But tonight was so freeing. And I didn’t want that to end. Maybe it was selfish of me, but these next few days I would remember and cherish forever. Even if she went back home where it was safe, and never talked to me again. I slowly pulled open the front door.
“And where the fuck have you been?” Otis’ booming voice called.
“A walk.” I said nervously.
“A walk, really, in the dark?”
“Mmmhmm, bought a new knife.” I said, showing off the gift as a makeshift alibi.
He squinted his eyes at me, but seemed to be satisfied with my response.
“Just tell someone where you’re going next time Yeah? Spaulding got back from the gas station and you were nowhere to be found.”
“Awww, we’re you worried?” I teased.
He scoffed, turning his back and walking away.
“Goodnight Blinky, and I mean that. Go the fuck to bed, we’ve got a busy day ahead of us.”
“Yes dad.”
An: A reminder that Blinky uses both She and They which is why it switches so much. I tried to make it seem as natural as possible.

Saw a couple of people have the same idea of Nubbins becoming a zombie, real shame nobody is really doing anything with that concept so here is a lil peace of what I think he would kind of look like. @texas-chainsaw-fanworks
