Gods, can I gush about the CGI in the Percy Jackson show for just a minute??
All of it is so fucking good!
The work was gone by ILM or Industrial Light and Magic, who are an incredible effects house and also one of the oldest effects houses there is. ILM was founded in the 1970s by George fucking Lucas to make the effects for the original Star Wars trilogy. They are the reason the original Jurassic Park had CGI in the first place! They worked with Jim Henson on The Dark Crystal and Tobe Hooper on Poltergeist, which has sone crazy awesome effects if you've never seen it. A part of ILM broke off in the 1990s and became fucking PIXAR!!
And Percy Jackson has had just the best looking effects I've seen in a long time. The creature work alone is worth so many awards. The minotaur was amazing.
Tumblr media
And the illusion of Chiron is never broken, it's just seamless and perfect.
Tumblr media
And don't get me started on Medusa's snakes. They're PERFECT. THEY ACT LIKE REAL SNAKES!!!
Tumblr media
And the chimera was beautiful. I loved the decision to give it a cobra's frill.
Tumblr media
Also, water is a notoriously difficult effect to do and all the water looks amazing in this show. I bet they pulled some people from the Avatar sequel to help with it.
Tumblr media
And Grover's legs never look bad. They're always perfect. I love the decision to keep them exposed the whole time, it adds to the magical feeling of the world while also showcasing how powerful the Mist really is.
Tumblr media
And one of my favorite effects HAS to be the way Mrs. Dodds' coat turned into her wings. I saw that and had an out of body experience.
Tumblr media
But this most recent episode just blew me away. Specifically with this (these next gifs are by @stevenrogered) :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, if you didn't know, tracking an effect onto someone's body is incredibly difficult. It's so difficult that CGI artists will often replace someone's body with a 3D model in order to make it easier. That could be what happens here in part, but they can't fake Walker's face.
Props to Walker for sitting as still as humanly possible during this incredibly emotional scene. Him sitting still helps make the tracking of the effect easier since the artists don't have to adjust the effect every frame to account for the slightest movements. Which brings me to the face.
Tumblr media
It is so hard to animate human faces and not fall into the uncanny valley, and yes this effect applies to that. Look at the way the gold conforms to the shape of his mouth as he speaks. Look at how it follows the movement of his chin, his cheeks. It's PERFECT. This is an incredibly impressive effect and I wanna just worship whichever overworked and underpaid VFX artist spent hours of their life working on it.
Okay, that's all, rants over, everyone go home!

How Jacob Elordi became the new King of Hollywood
“It certainly crossed my mind briefly before I’d read the script. I don’t want to tell the same story over, especially because he did such a fine job of portraying this man,” Elordi says. “It’s a completely different thing. And it’s terribly exciting, too, running into the fire a little bit. I can’t think of anything more exhilarating.”

re-watching David Tennant's and Michael Sheen's filmographies after good omens makes me really really want to see them try out-craze each other in something, so...
Concept: David Tennant and Michael Sheen in one project but they both play unhinged psychopaths.
..And that's the whole plot
(you don't even need a script they are both soo good being unhinged just set them free and let them improvise)

In case you were wondering where things are at in the film and television industry here's how post-production folks (editors, VFX, Colorists, etc) are doing. These screenshots are from The Blue Collar Post Collective's FB page (they are an International professional network for folks working in post).
This one is from a few months ago...

These are all from the past few days (from 2 separate Anon posts re "where to find jobs")...

My former post-supervisor really fucked me over and I've been unemployed for months. At this point I'm applying to jobs in grocery stores cause it's just dead dead dead out there. Winter is always the time of year you don't want to be without a film or series to work on but this just abysmal.

Q: Bruce Lee wrote and developed this idea. Is it kind of surreal to be working on and bringing one of his projects to life?

i post abt this regularly but children should not be actors im so serious we do not need nor deserve stories that hire children to perform any amount of labor that also exposes them to the vile industry that is the media and all of its horrifying pedophilic roots and wider audience access. idc how moving or artistic it is, you do not need a movie that has a 9 year old reading emotionally demanding lines that effectively end their innocence to learn. like full stop they just shouldn’t be hiring children to do ANYTHING but i cannot fathom why ANYONE thinks we absolutely must have children on tv and in movies. “for realism” “for art” “for other children to enjoy as an audience” idc!!!!! it’s child labor. it’s emotionally demanding and it’s abusive. it’s never not been abusive. so how about we just dont fucking do that and you ask yourself why you think we as a society “need” children to perform for us in ANY capacity

possibly unpopular opinion but I don't think we actually need to CGI de-age actors for most productions just for the sake of keeping your big name, I think the actor pool is wide enough that it is not that difficult to find someone to believably portray a younger version of a character

yea we are never making progress ever the more people I talk to about unions and striking the more I keep hearing the same excuse of "they're selfish, they should just find another job if it's not paying them well/the conditions are bad" because last night my cousin called the people that work for national rail and other train services doing a walk off/striking are selfish for doing so and when I tried to explain to her that no act of striking the workplace is selfish when this is done to change the workplace for EVERYBODY not just those striking she started saying I'm doing too much over a "fake scenario" because she said would never strike when I wasn't even addressing that I felt like I was in a twitter arguement but in real life because at this point it's willful ignorance if you try to flip over the tables and say what I'm fighting for isn't even real when you just said people that strike are selfish....

I had this in my drafts from this morning (before The Duffer tweeted about their solidarity with the WGA strike + delayed the filming of Stranger Things) but—just so everyone is aware (or if anyone wants to be more aware of the wider situation):
the WGA isn't the only group of creators contending with a looming strike, as the SAG-AFTRA (aka the actors guild) & DGA (directors guild) are already standing in solidarity with the WGA (on the picket lines, too) and has deadline coming up end of June that, should an arrangement not be met with the AMPTP, will bring nearly the entire industry to a standstill.
Tumblr media
like. I know most people don’t know film and TV but if the SAG-AFTRA strikes too, this whole industry shuts down….and considering they’re also arguing for raised minimums and against mini-rooms just like the WGA, this could v quickly turn into a mess.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Given that the SAG-AFTRA is made up of 160,000 actors and performers even before we touch the DGA, its guaranteed that a solid number of your Stranger Things faves are members—especially ones like David and Winona....and The Duffers who are directors too.
Basically: if networks don't start treating creators with the professional respect they deserve across the board, we may very well be in for a very long hiatus even if the WGA sorts out their problems.
bonus: here is a v solid vid on the writers strike context if people want it.

The Chinese Swifties had a 1989 Taylor's Version music party 🥳 to celebrate her rebirth!!!
@taylorswift We love you SO much 💙🩵
@taylornation
Ps I heard Taylor registered her Chinese nickname “霉霉” (méi), which i heard is similar in pronunciation to beauty-beauty (& unlucky from her early billboard years), but it's just a term of endearment now & is widely used by Chinese fans. They wish to see you so bad some of them are even flying over to Singapore!
Ps yay I'll get to see Taylor in March, so excited 😆
I delayed my exchange plans for mother, because it's a need

apparently a brain aneurysm isn’t sufficient enough for amazon to bother reporting to worksafe nz when i’ve had to write multiple reports on coworker’s cuts that didn’t even require stitches. corporations really will just churn through bodies with zero regard.
