I liked the part with the jaw harp.
While still very impressive for the fourth movie in a series all released within the same calendar year, Machine Animal is certainly not the strongest installment .
The plot was interesting enough, but there was no real sense of progression as the gang meandered from one loosely related scene to another. The crime thriller aspects were surprisingly tame, with hardly any sense of danger or suspense. The sedately paced motorbike chase was quite amusing, but hardly edge-of-your seat stuff.
Worst of all, the Meiko Kaji led girl gang did barely anything of note, and then just stood around and watched the ending happen to far less compelling characters, instead of kicking ass and winning like they damn well should have.
The soundtrack was great as usual, and one performance early in the movie in a Greek bar was excellent, but there were just too many random musical breaks this time around. It started to feel more obviously like killing time than a glimpse into the culture that had already been well fleshed out by this point.
Definitely not my favourite of the series. Good, but not great.

The Eagles of Death Metal are one of those bands I’ll invariably have trouble describing because they are so very… different… but here goes. To put it simply, EoDM does rockabilly, which in modern times is woefully underrepresented in a mainstream sense. Done correctly and passionately, rockabilly is a highly creative, often danceable mutant-cross breed between a lot of rock styles that predominantly originated in the American Southwest. It’s a combination of genres like western swing, country, bluegrass, and, well, old school hillbilly music. Classic rockabilly examples would come in the form of acts like Buddy Holly, The Stray Cats and Elvis Presley. These days, its ensembles like EoDM that carry the rockabilly torch, often combining elements of funk, punk, and boogie-woogie blues to generate a quirky and animated noise that is formulated for modern times, but still steeped in old-fashioned conventions. Listening to their tunes is like taking a trip in a time machine to a bygone era where music in America, much like currency in America, had something that could be vaguely perceived as valuable. EoDM doesn’t really deal in ‘death metal’ per se, sorry to disappoint you. Their sound is sometimes very metal, but instead delivered in such a charismatic and goofy package that you’ll have no trouble recognizing standard metal from their own works. Having a history that stretches back to the early 2000’s, this group cranked out four studio albums before 2015. That year, there was a terrorist attack during one of their shows at the Bataclan Theatre in Paris, which sent the band in a frenzy to escape backstage and took 90 innocent concertgoers to their graves. Suffice it to say, they haven’t made much new music since that time. They even refused to play the song they were performing at the Bataclan Theatre during the attack for several years after the incident, which was one called Kiss the Devil. The tune I’ve posted above is Speaking in Tongues from their 2004 album Peace, Love, Death Metal. I don’t know if this group will ever make new music again, but I sure hope they try, because they are one of the last remaining incarnations of a style of music that is largely considered to be an audio relic. Smash play and enjoy!

Moe Violence: or How I Struck the Jidaigeki Goldmine
Tumblr media
I lost a close friend recently. A really close one and it was the kind of sudden bolt from the blue that’s really just fate waking up and deciding to kick you in the teeth. He liked old Western movies and was enough of a film buff to know how much back-and-forth there was with samurai cinema. So we had a lot of fun talking about movies. Made me want to finally get through a stack of films I’ve dug up on archive.org. Liking what I like, I think this binge has helped get a lot of clarity on where we started with looking at Lady Snowblood & Red Swallow Oyuki. (Oh...by the way. I plum forgot Snowblood’s auntie/confidant type figure was named Okiku. Always has a basket of yellow mums outside her door)
Started with checking out a trio of films the absolutely wonderful Junko Miyazono did after Red Swallow. Series is called Tales of the Poison Seductress; Hannya Ohyaku, Quick-Draw Okatsu, & Okatsu the Fugitive. They’re all standalone, caution though they’re very violent. SA is a factor too but from what I’ve seen most of the scenes may drag but try to keep it not too graphic. I say that as someone pretty turned off but “losing her virtue” is a threat hanging around frequently in these and there’s a torture element. This is 60s/70s Japanese Grindhouse cinema, the type of thing that inspired gory directors like Quentin Tarantino. It ain’t for everyone and that’s why I wanna gush about it here. What I’m getting more and more though is that pinning our beloved Okiku to one jidaigeki reference is a fool’s errand. My dears, she’s an ode to an entire subgenre!
Tumblr media
Let’s not split hairs over the specific category of Toei films and slightly different ones with a female lead. The term I see used is “Pinky Violence.” Pinky coming from having female leads and being very sexually charged affairs. Toei needed to do something to compete with more Western movies making it over, so they opted for shock value and the way they went for it ended up giving us a pretty feminist genre. Not to say these were all jidaigeki which means “period drama.” There were a lot of modern ones I have yet to dive into heavily. Before Lady Snowblood Meiko Kaji gave us a really fun looking 6-part series called Stray Cat Rock for a great example. Machine guns, motorcycles, and LSD. They look awesome and check this aesthetic! I’m in love.
Tumblr media
That knowledge does make me think of Nami and the early design with a missing arm. Jojo’s Stone Ocean as well while we’re at it. There’s also a fair number of Yakuza movies that fall sorta in between like the Red Peony Gambler (Hibotan Bakuto) series. It’s all a little nebulous if you want to get into the weeds. There’s a few different styles from a few different studios but make no mistake. These were popular movies in Japan. Big studios like Toei were churning them out as B movies to maintain relevance. Compete with television and Hollywood’s resources.
Tumblr media
Know what isn’t nebulous? Yeah...the hallmarks of the genre are big things we see out of Okiku’s role in Wano. The otherwise perfect lady with some little hook that means she isn’t “marriage material.” The whole arc of showing she can kick as much ass as any man but always reminding you of the lady playing the part. A big, big shared element is this core theme of taking down corrupt officials who abuse their power. Urashima the Yokozuna is exactly the type of guy who’d end up a villain in these. Sticking up for humble villagers, looking out for other women and children. Being the collateral damage of “great” men’s ambitions is what we tend to see over traditional fare like say, reinstalling a dynasty. I love the running theme of these being so much more local in scope. And Kiku gets that modern twist of her being trans for the “excuse.” I adore that in contrast to anime trends of needing to make an excuse for the deviance. My dead sister was the favorite, I went silly due to trauma, etc. This trope and trend of subversion is a big reason I love the mistaken bride idea.
The more of these I see, and I’m friggin hooked these days, the more I see little bits and bobs that feel like they may have shaped our beautiful flower of Wano. And others! She’s a little more than a simple homage though. We do see the violence part pretty well for One Piece. Kiku gets the shit beaten out of her on Onigashima and it is gory by this manga’s standards. That’s where the modernization seems to be though. We tone down the sexuality for cute. Which isn’t that off base, the archetype in historical settings typically does have that innocent and sweet side. One Piece just isn’t the type of series you’re going to actually see things like making good on Tama’s intro of fleeing from being sold to the red light district. Even if it didn’t make it in the proper story, Kiku & Izo’s origin does flirt with that kind of content more than the series usually would. Hell, we do get Holdem torturing Tama and the series just fades to black on a similar spot for Tsuru.
Tumblr media
Wano made this genre feel familiar already. Snowblood loves it some anachronic storytelling, Red Peony sets up and ends films with a non-diagetic theatrical framing. Ohyaku uses a big simpleton to bust out of a prison camp. Speaking of, can I please get someone whipping a hair stick like a dart? That’s my favorite little signature from the Red Peony. Oryu in those is a fun protagonist played by Junko Fuji. That’s one of the more accessible series, less graphic than One Piece so far, and she plays with gender as a theme more. Proclaims to be a man but we always see deep down she’s still a lady that wishes she could have married the honest merchant’s son. Oh...and almost all of these ladies are total daddy’s girls like Kiku acts towards Kin. That whole series gets its own because there’s eight of them and they’re soooo good.
Eiichiro Oda is a great writer and worldbuilder...but he’s actually pretty derivative. One Piece doesn’t break ground as much as refine the dominant genre when it started, even Rurouni Kenshin was more subversive for shonen. The more I see of these though, the more I see Oda just being this big kid who thought these old movies were so cool and couldn’t wait to rip into his samurai gang. Of course one of em if gonna be a little Junko Miyazono/Meiko Kaji being a fierce strong-willed lady of war. These movies are classic cool!

WIP Sims 4 challenge
So here’s what I’ve got so far for my Nintendo themed Sims 4 Challenge. Like I said I’m kind of blanking on certain generations so if anyone’s got suggestions, I’m all ears.
I’m also willing to take suggestions to change or replace some of the goals I’ve already written down. I haven’t made a sims challenge since the days of Sims 2 so I’ll take any help.
---------
Generation 1 Animal Crossing:
Traits: Loves Outdoors/Outgoing/Cheerful
Aspiration: Curator
You have moved into a new town with nothing but the clothes on your back. Well at least Mr. Nook was nice enough to give you a new home even with the work you'll have to do to pay him off. But how hard can that be?
Move into an empty lot and build a small house.
Have the Curator Aspiration
Neither the founder nor spouse will hold a job, they will make money via at home activities like painting, fishing, etc.
Have a room to display collections
At the end of every sim week, use cheats or mods to remove half of your household funds (to pay off your debt to Mr. Nook) until your sim reaches the adult stage.
Generation 2 Splatoon:
Traits: Creative/Dance Machine/Music Lover
Aspiration: Famous Celebrity Aspiration
Despite your humble beginnings, you always dreamed big. You constantly looked through fashion and celebrity magazines in between creative endeavors and knew that you would join that world one way or another.
Move to San Myshuno or Del Sol Valley once you become a Young Adult
Reach the top of the Style Influencer career (Trendsetter branch)
Host a party once every sim week
Complete the Famous Celebrity Aspiration
Max out painting and singing skills
Generation 3 Zelda: (Needs more traits)
Traits: Good/Adventurous/
Aspiration: Jungle Explorer
Everyone expected you to become a spoiled brat but thankfully you turned out to be a good kid who loved adventure. Unfortunately as you were quick to discover not every sim liked a Goody-Two-Shoe.
Make a friend as a child or teen, become BFFs with them, and stay that way for as long as either sim lives (friend can be a future spouse)
As a child or teen become enemies with one sim and stay enemies for as long as either sim lives. Win at least one fight with them. (Optional: Become enemies with an evil sim)
Max out the Archaeology skill and one instrument skill
Complete the Ancient Omiscan Artifacts Collection
Complete the Jungle Explorer Aspiration
Generation 4 Pikmin:
Traits: Hot headed/Geek/Genius
Aspiration: Nerd Brain
Some science kids were into space and some science kids were more down to Earth. You were both. You loved helping out at the school greenhouse and loved stargazing on weekends. It didn’t take long before you started to wonder if there was a way to combine both of your favorite interests.
Join Scouts as a kid
Master gardening and rocket science skills
Visit Sixam and befriend three aliens
Complete the Geode and Space rock collections
Find all three alien plants on Sixam and plant them in your garden (Do NOT buy them in Henford-On-Bagley)
Generation 5 Pokemon: (Needs more traits)
Traits: Dog (or Cat) Lover/Green Fiend
Aspiration: Friend of the Animals
Ever since you were little, you were obsessed with animals. Your friends blame your childhood obsession with Voidcritters (even if some of them weren't really animals). When you grew up, you knew you were going to do all you could to help animals in need.
Complete the Friend of the Animals aspiration
Complete the Voidcritters Collection
Adopt at least eight pets over your lifetime including at least one stray.
Open a Vet Clinc (pokemon center) and get it to five stars
Max out Veterinary and pet training skills
OR
Complete the Country Caretaker Aspiration
Complete Voidcritters Collection
Always have a dog or cat in the household
Have at least one of each farm animal (chickens, cow, and llamas)
Win first place in each animal fair in Henford-On-Bagley
Generation 6 Mario: (Needs more traits and aspirations)
Heir 1 Traits: Family Oriented/Bro/
Heir 2 Traits: Squeamish/Clumsy/Bro
Heir 1 Aspiration:
Heir 2 Aspiration:
You and your sibling were as thick as thieves growing up and neither of you really liked the idea of one of you moving away so they stuck around. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have their own adventures.
Chose two siblings to serve as Double Heirs
Both heirs take a part time job as Manual Laborers until one of them gets married then one joins the Doctor career
The other heir maxes out the Medium skill and becomes a Paranormal Investigator
Both heirs max out Handiness skill
One heir unlocks Sylvan Glade and the other unlocks Forgotten Grotto
Generation 7 Kirby: (Needs more goals and traits)
Traits: Foodie (or Glutton)/
Aspiration: Master Chef
You grew up in a bit of a crowded house but you didn’t mind, you loved your family and you especially loved the big meals that would be cooked for everyone. No matter how many other interests you developed, your love of food was always a constant.
Complete the Renaissance Sim aspiration
Max out the Cooking and Gourmet Cooking skills
Generation 8 Metroid:
Traits: Loner/Unflirty/Noncommittal
Aspiration: Strangerville Mystery
Max out body and wellness skills
Reach the top of the Astronaut (Space Ranger branch) career then quit after three shifts.
Adopt a child
Solve the Strangerville Mystery and defeat Mother Plant
Never marry (If you want a biological child that’s fine but again, do not marry)
Generation 9 Earthbound: (Needs more goals and aspiration)
Traits: Childish/Goofball/Active
Aspiration:
As a child, make three friends
Complete one childhood aspiration
When reaching the teen stage, become a spellcaster
Generation 10 Fire Emblem: (Needs traits)
Traits: Proper/Ambitious
Aspiration: Leader of the Pack Aspiration
If a sim dies, you cannot plead with the Grim Reaper nor can you resurrect them in any way
Max out Charisma and research & debate skills
Reach the top of the Political Career (Politician branch)
Form a club (forming an army) and eventually build up to recruiting eight members
Marry a member of your club (and if they aren’t already, have them join the military career)
Complete the Leader of the Pack Aspiration

Movie Review | The Stray Cat Rock Series (Hasebe & Fujita, 1970-71)
Tumblr media
A surprisingly consistent series, frequently unpredictable and always stylish and entertaining. The first entry, Delinquent Girl Boss, might be the best summation of the their strengths, striking a tough, edgy tone yet proving surprisingly tender in its depiction of the camaraderie among its characters, members of an all-girl gang and other societal outcasts. The plot follows the gang as they band together to protect their friend who gets in trouble with another gang after his friend refuses to throw a boxing match. The proceedings are as raucous as the title suggests, lent extra swagger by the brash performance by Akiko Wada as a leather-clad biker who takes up with the gang as well as groovy scoring courtesy of various rock acts (a series fixture), yet when the conclusion arrives, it’s surprisingly deeply felt.
The ending also suggests that this might not be a series in the traditional sense, which quickly becomes clear when the second film, Wild Jumbo, switches to a completely different set of characters, only some of whom are played by returning cast members Meiko Kaji and Tatsuya Fuji. This is probably the most slight of the films, as two thirds of the movie consist of our characters goofing around on a beach in loosely connected vignettes and almost play-acting as soldiers or police, parodying the establishment that wants no part of them (although the stash of antique weapons they find makes some of this “acting” uneasily authentic). The third act brings some welcome focus to the proceedings, as the characters decide to rob a religious organization. The heist does not go as planned, and the film ends on a grim note in stark contrast to the lighthearted tone of the earlier sections.
The series frequently casts its characters in opposition to the establishment and ugly nationalistic sentiments, and nowhere is this dynamic clearest as in Sex Hunter, the misleadingly titled third installment which has our heroes standing up to racially motivated violence after a rival gang starts targeting mixed-race individuals. As always, even when pairing our heroes with a morally righteous mission, the series finds emotional complications and throws in a surprisingly moving subplot about a supporting character coming to terms with her identity. This is the strongest of the entries, and also the one that serves as the clearest testament to Meiko Kaji’s star power. While the first film was arguably led by Akiko Wada and the second was an ensemble piece, this is the first one where Kaji really dominates the proceedings, wresting control of the action with her steely demeanour while producing moments of real poignancy. She even sings a duet with Rikiya Yasuoka in a moving scene that’s one of the film’s best. Let it also be said that while Kaji has one of the best stares in the movies, she also has one of the most underrated smiles. If that sounds like I’m crushing on Kaji, so be it and judge not that ye not be judged.
The fourth film, Machine Animal, has the girls helping a draft dodger escape the country by offloading enough LSD to buy him passage on an outbound ship. It continues to position the characters more as actual gang members rather than stylishly dressed pals who get into knife fights (which is mostly the case with the first movie) while still finding ways to earn our sympathies. It’s comparatively slight and feels closer in quality to the second than to the first and third, but still finds moments of unexpected poetry. The final film, Beat ‘71, returns to the level of relative quality as the first and third films and ends things on a relatively high note. It has Kaji wrongly framed for a murder, leading her comrades to face off against the forces of the culprit’s father, a mayoral candidate trying to maintain the facade of respectability by any means necessary, legality be damned. It has the most political conviction of any of the movies, and situates the climax in a mine dressed up for shooting westerns, which gives the action a nice sense of finality. That being said, one of the promo images promises a scene of Kaji and friends in too cute cowgirl outfits, so if that’s your reason for watching the movie (and I won’t judge), be warned that it never materializes. No matter, for the rest of us, these movies and their improvisational energy, off-the-cuff action filmmaking, deeply felt sense of camaraderie and smuggled in notes of visual poetry, are a real treat.
