"Built from a thousand kilometers of flesh and steel, it writhes in the passions of those who live in it. Everyone and everything is connected here; there are no accidents. Take a walk down any street and read the writing on the wall: 'Welcome to the Sprawl, chummer. Too bad you could make it.'" (Steve Venters cover art for Shadowrun supplement Sprawl Sites, FASA, 1990)

Heh. This is Traveller: 2300 (1986). Despite the name, it has nothing to do with Traveller, the far future science fiction RPG. Rather, 2300 grows out of the then near-future military RPG Twilight 2000. Basically, that game involves small scale nuclear conflicts that take three centuries for humanity to recover from, at which point the tech level has advanced far enough to seriously explore space (and, you know, get into an interstellar war). There is a space elevator and new fangled FTL engines, but the tech is not very much more advanced than what we currently contend with. Earth is still divided into national loyalties that are reflected in an interstellar colonial system. Improbably, France is top dog, though their colonies are in conflict with the alien Kafir. There are other alien species as well — like Star Frontiers and unlike regular Traveller, they mostly seem pleasingly, well, alien.
The system is essentially the same as Twilight 2000. In the ‘80s, people seemed pretty positively disposed toward Twilight. I find that mystifying and I don’t think the focus on detailed realism holds up in the 2020s. I like the world though, I think it is an interesting (if highly militarized) take on what would surely be an exciting period of history to live through. It never really took off with players, though — initially that was probably due to brand confusion but the appetite for this sort of science fiction was eroding in the face of brighter settings like Star Wars and grittier ones like Cyberpunk.
(The posing on that Steve Venters cover always makes me chuckle)

Personalized Genomics in Healthcare
Tumblr media
The first individuals to ever have their genomes sequenced were James Watson, the co-discoverer of the DNA double helix structure, and Craig Venter, the founder of Celera Genomics. Even Steve Jobs paid $100,000 to have his DNA sequenced in 2011 when his pancreatic cancer relapsed, in hopes that his genetic data would help him find treatments better suited to treat his unique cancer pathology in the context of his own unique genetic makeup. Unfortunately, cancer treatment and personalized genomics at the time were not nearly as advanced as they are today. Unprecedented strides in the field of genomics have provided individuals the opportunity to sequence their entire genome or parts of it with the goal of understanding their potential health risks, living a lifestyle catered to avoid them, and being better prepared mentally and physically to deal with them if they arise. Not to mention, it costs much less to have your entire genome sequenced now than it did a decade ago.

for the fic ask game!! k,s,v!!
Thanks for the ask, sorry it took a bit to get to this I got a little distracted.
K: What’s the angstiest idea you’ve ever come up with?
Hum, well I don’t do super angstie stuff and nothing ends angsty cuz I am a sucker for a happy ending but for Harringrove (I probably had some like real angstie stuff in another fandom before I took a hiatus 7/8 years ago but I’m not willing to venter down that road).
So either this one with post season three Billy lives and has some sort of telepathy, which in hind sight is not as sad as it could but but it would be from Steve’s point of view and I nearly always make myself sad writing him.
Steve spending all of his time with an unconscious Billy at the hospital. He's still in a coma, hooked up to a respirator and everything. Steve’s barely been eating, getting all of his sleep in an uncomfortable plastic backed chair. He’s barely taking care of himself, letting himself waist away as he loses hope of Billy ever waking up.
One day Steve wakes up and something is different, feels different but he can’t put his finger on what it is or why. He pushes the feeling off oddness away when he notices Billy on the bed awake, unencumbered by machines. He looks google, healthy, better than he did even before he got impaled.
It’s a weird sort of hazy as Steve flings himself at Billy, crying into his chest. Billy shushing him, mumbling softly as he strokes Steve's hair, before his hands become firmer, leading and then they are kissing. Some tearful glad you are alive sex, Billy laid back hands on Steve’s thighs as Steve rides him talking about how happy he is Billy is awake.
Panting, head pressed against Billy chest once they’re dune, Billy's hands stroking though his hair again. "I'm so glad you woke up Billy, I've missed you so much."
"Not awake yet pretty boy, but soon, need you to start taking care of yourself though. Otherwise they won't release me into your care when the time comes. Way you're going you'll end up stuck here with a bed of your own.” Steve is confused by the words, because what?
Steve waking up and crying as he sees Billy prone and still unconscious.
Or this one with Steve wanting to kill himself, which has the potential to go really sad but over all I think the premise has more potential for humor and soft boys, as long as I don’t write from Steve’s point of view.
Steve and Billy both work at the same Boarding School. Steve is the librarian, the least helpful librarian ever, stop ordering the books by color, there is literally a system. Billy is the lacrosse coach/physical fitness teacher. Billy also works as a hitman, mostly during the holidays but he has a dark web site that he checks from time to time just in case anything really good comes along.
When Steve sad big eyed Steve who Billy doesn't actually see much of, it's his first year at the school, leaves a message looking for a hitman well Billy is very intrigued. Billy replies, curious as to who soft hearted ever helpful Steve could want killed. Billy might not see him often but he's heard the kids talk about him, when they aren't complaining about how he has reorganized the library it's all good things. Even Max, Billy's young sibling, the reason Billy took a job at a school instead of just working as a hitman full time likes the guy, like a lot.
Billy is shocked when Steve finally gets back to him after a couple of days and Steve wants Billy to kill him. Steve himself, dead specifically while he isn't on school grounds, doesn't want the kids to bear witness. Billy accepts, he doesn't actually know the guy, so what does he care, he'll wait a few days maybe a few weeks and then take Steve out while he's out for the weekend.
Curiosity gets the better of Billy and he starts watching Steve more. The only person he really talks to outside if the kids is the music instructor. He always smiles when people are looking, always puts on a show of being happy for the kids, Billy can see the weariness.
Billy cant kill Steve when he falls for him, especially not when he's in love and Steve is the best thing to ever happen to him. Because as I’ve said I can’t resist a happy ending.
S: Any fandom tropes you can’t resist?
Every time I get a question regarding tropes I suddenly forget what all of them are and draw a blank so I always end up having to look up a list of tropes. Werewolves, or someone being a creature in general whatever that trope would be called, it seems like I am always working on a creature fic. Collage Au, I keep catching myself doing those too. I dunno those count right? moving on.
V: If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose?
You know it’s funny I’ve never read a fic and been like I wish I could write a sequel to this, that just a thought that has never even occurred to me to have. There are some I’ve read that I wish I could finish solely because they were left unfinished, though none I can think of off the top of my head because I stopped reading unfinished works a while ago for my own sanity. Do I sometimes with stories I read had a sequel, sure but not written by me lol.

GPVegas Part 2
Back to Part 1
Part 2 from my GP Las Vegas report is a ton of signatures. Did I mention there were dozens of artists there? It’s hard to imagine how anyone had time to play with all the amazing art. :P
Tumblr media
First pic above is from some original Magic artists. It was my first time meeting Liz Danforth and Richard Kane Ferguson, and it was awesome hearing about how things have changed over the years. Also, I’ve loved Rebecca Guay’s art since I started but I never realized how many other watercolor artists are in Magic!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up are some more recent additions to Magic’s deep bench of artists (and Pete Venters, who didn’t fit in the first image).
I’m appreciating the artistry of signatures more and more, from the angular lines of Eric Deschamps and Jason Engle, to the flowing curves of Dan Scott and Howard Lyon, to the flourishes of Steve Argyle and Zack Stella.  I wish my own signature was anywhere as unique, beautiful, and consistent as any of these.
Unfortunately I only have two of Steve’s Snuff Outs. Gonna have to work on completing that set.
I’ll post more as I get a chance to sort through things and take photos.
