Stardew Valley: Meet the Eligible Bachelors and Bachelorettes
One game that I'm obsessed with playing is Stardew Valley. It's one of those games were you can advance the game if you want to or ignore all the social aspects. And I go back and forth between trying to advance my standings with the community and being the hermit farmer that talks to no one. But one thing I always try to do, is get myself either a lovely wife or husband. So let's go over each of the eligible bachelors and bachelorettes.
Marriage is Stardew Valley is only possible when you each 10 hearts with any of the 12 eligible bachelors or bachelorettes. But that can only be unlocked using a special bouquet that becomes available when you reach 8 hearts. And you can purchase this at Pierre's General Store. And you can do this with multiple NPCs as long as you aren't married to one of them already. Then once you decide which one you want to marry, you must propose with a Mermaid's pendant. This can be obtained from the Old Mariner on the beach for 5,000 gold, upgrading your farmhouse once, and be in range to marry someone. And he only appears on rainy days. After you propose the wedding will occur three days later unless there is already an event planned that day.
Your spouse will live with you at your farmhouse. When married they now have 12 hearts and you cannot give bouquets to other NPCs as they will question you. The 2 gift limit a week is lifted but the daily limit of 1 is still applied. Their hearts can go down but as long as you keep them happy they will do chores around the farm such as: making breakfast, feeding animals, repairing fences, and watering plants. They will also occassionally change wallpaper and flooring around the farmhouse. If there is no dialogue available, then you will merely embrace. Children can be born after the farmhouse is upgraded a second time. Same sex couples will adopt while opposite sex will give birth. And you can have up to 2 children that never get older than a toddler which is the 4 life stage for them. Gender of your children is also random.
Bachelors
Alex - He is in love with sports and hanging out at the beach. He can be quite arrogant and brags to everyone that he's going to be a professional athlete. But underneath that arrognance is a guy filled with self-doubt. The best gifts to give him are: complete breakfast and salmon dinner.
Elliott - He lives in the cabin on the beach. He's a writer and quite a sentimental romantic. The best gifts to give him are: Crab Cakes, Duck Feather, Lobster, Pomegranate, and Tom Kha Soup.
Harvey - The town doctor that works all the time. He is kind hearted and well respected in the community. He is one of the older bachelors in the game. He also lives in the apartment above the medical clinic. There is also a sadness about him. The best gifts to give him are: coffee, pickles, super meal, truffle oil, and wine.
Sam - He is outgoing and friendly guy. He loves to play guitar and wants to start a band some day with Sebastian. But he oftens starts projects, he never finishes. And he is nervous about the return of his father who has been away for quite some time. The best gifts to give him are: cactus juice, maple bar, pizza, and tigerseye.
Sebastian - The rebellious loner that also is a computer programmer. He is the older half-brother of Maru, and feels she gets all the attention and adoration. He loves computer games, comic books, and sci-fi novels. Often spending a lot of time in his room pursuing these hobbies. The best gifts to give him are: frozen tear, obsidian, pumpkin soup, sashimi, and void egg.
Shane - Added as a bachelor in 1.1. He is renting a room from Marnie. He can come off as rude and unhappy working at JojaMart. He drinks a lot and suffers from depression. But once you get to know him, he will send you recipes. The best gifts to give him are: beer, hot pepper, pepper poppers, and pizza.
Bachelorettes
Abigail - She lives in the general store with her parents and has an "alternative lifestyle." She dyes her hair blue and enjoys a bit of occult interests. You can also find her alone in the graveyard or looking for frogs. Her favorite gifts are the following: amethyst, blackberry cobbler, chocolate cake, pufferfish, pumpkin, and spicy eel.
Haley - She grew up wealthy and popular, so she's a little conceited and self-centered. She also judges people for superfacial reasons. Her favorite gifts are the following: coconut, fruit salad, pink cake, and sunflower.
Leah - She lives alone in a small cabin just outside of town. She loves spending time outside, foraging for a wild meal, and enjoying the gifts of the season. She is a talented artist but is too nervous to display any of it. Her favorite gifts are the following: goat cheese, poppyseed muffin, salad, stir fry, truffle, vegetable medley, and wine.
Maru - She is the daughter of a carpenter and scientist, and half-sister of Sebastian. She has a passion for creating gadgets, fiddling with tools and machinery, and working odd jobs like helping at the local clinic. She is friendly, outgoing, and ambitious. Her favorite gifts are the following: battery pack, cauliflower, cheese cauliflower, diamond, gold bar, iridium bar, miner's treat, pepper poppers, rhubarb pie, and strawberry.
Penny - Daughter of Pam. She is quite sly and modest, and doesn't have any ambitions other than having a family of her own. She does enjoy cooking and reading books at the library. She also teaches the local children at the museum, as well as accompanying them to the playground. Her favorite gifts are the following: diamond, emerald, melon, poppy, poppyseed muffin, red plate, roots platter, sandfish, and tom kha soup.
Emily - Added to the list of eligible bacherolettes in 1.1. She works at the Stardrop Saloon with Gus. But she loves tailoring and makes her clothes from scratch. Her favorite gifts are the following: amethyst, aquamarine, cloth, emerald, jade, ruby, survival burger, topaz, and wool.
Who would you romance in Stardew Valley?

Romance guide for Stardew Valley
General advice:
Talk to them every day.  You gain a small bonus to relationship every day you talk to someone, and a small penalty every day you don’t.  It’s not a large number, but it adds up.
Try to give two gifts a week no matter what.  If you don’t have a gift they love, at least give one they like.  Better a mediocre gift than none at all, just don’t give one they hate.
Check the bulletin board at the general store for delivery quests and fulfill any you can, these give a significant bonus as well.  Don’t be worried about taking a quest and then not completing it, there’s no friendship penalty for letting a quest time out.
Save the best gift for their birthday.  Gifts with quality levels also give a bonus, so if you have a loved gift with a gold star rating and another with no quality rating, save the gold star one for the extra birthday bonus.  A perfect quality gold or iridium star loved gift on a birthday will fill in 3-4 hearts on their relationship bar by itself.  For this reason fruit, vegetables, and flowers are better birthday gifts than gems, as gems don’t have quality levels but produce does.
You can also gain a friendship bonus with everyone in town with a good quality contribution to the potluck soup at the luau.  If you get a gold star cauliflower from farming in the spring, save it for this purpose.
If you are trying to get to a high relationship level with multiple partners, hold off on marrying any of them until you are done.  Marriage brings in a jealousy mechanic where your spouse may get angry at you for giving gifts to other potential marriage candidates.  There’s no problem with having multiple boyfriends/girlfriends so long as you aren’t married.
Individual bachelor/bachelorettes after the break.
Abigail:
Visit the mines.  Save any amethysts you find for her.  She will also accept quartz as a gift, though it’s not as well loved.  Amethysts seem to be common in levels 10-20, so do those levels repeatedly to build up a supply of gifts for her.
In the fall, plant a huge patch of pumpkins.  Use speed-grow on at least part of it to have them ready for her birthday on Fall 13.  Save them as a continuing supply of gifts that don’t require braving the mines.
Marry the best wife and go on adventures together.
Alex:
In the spring, plant and grow plenty of kale.  Hold onto this.
Become friends with Gus, the guy who runs the saloon.  He likes daffodils and other universal gifts, and his birthday is on Summer 8.  When at 3 hearts, he will send you the recipe for salmon dinner.
In the fall, grow amaranth and fish for salmon in the river south of Leah’s cottage.  You can now make salmon dinner for Alex.
Alex also loves the complete breakfast meal, but it’s a really complex recipe that you need eggs and milk for and won’t be able to make till midway through the second year.
He will also accept most artisan products, maple syrup, and many flowers as gifts.
Elliott:
Elliot loves pomegranates.  Try to gather enough money to buy and plant a pomegranate sapling by the end of spring.  This will bear fruit in fall.  Harvest and store all the pomegranates, and give them to him as gifts for when you don’t have another gift for him. You should get your first harvest in time for his birthday on Fall 5.
Level up your fishing skill.  In mornings, during summer, fish in the ocean and save any octopus you catch for him.  Once your fishing is up to level 3, you can make crab pots.  (You will need iron bars to make them, so you’ll need to also be down to the level where you get iron ore in the mines).  Put the crab pots in the ocean and save any lobster you catch for him.
Keep him around your farmhouse as something pretty to look at, he’s not good for much else.
Emily:
Emily loves brightly colored gems: amethyst, aquamarine, emerald, jade, ruby, and topaz are her favorites.  While exploring the upper levels of the mines, you’ll come across plenty of amethyst and topaz.  Give her the topaz, and the amethyst if not also romancing Abigail.  She also likes quartz, although not as much.  Her birthday is Spring 27, and you should try and save one of her loved gems for this day.
Save any cave carrots you come across.  Watch the cooking channel on day 28 of summer for the bread recipe.  In the fall, grow eggplant.  You can now make bread (from wheat flour from the store) and then use that and the cave carrot and eggplant to make survival burgers for her.
Proceed to break Clint’s heart.  Should have asked her out when you had the chance, dude.
Haley:
Haley likes most flowers, farmed or gathered from the wild.  The only exceptions are poppies and dandelions.  Gather daffodils in the spring and give them to her twice a week, especially making sure to give her one on her birthday, Spring 14.  She probably won’t dance with you at the flower dance, since you can’t get any of her most loved gifts in the first spring.
During the summer, start growing sunflowers, as these are one of her loved gifts, and switch to giving her these instead of daffodils.  She does not like most gifts of fruits or vegetables, so stick to flowers.  You can continue to grow sunflowers throughout the summer and fall, and each one you harvest will yield additional seeds, so it won’t be hard to grow enough to get her to full hearts.
Be prepared to be a complete doormat as she repeatedly negs you and doesn’t even acknowledge that you have a name until halfway through her relationship arc.
Harvey:
From the start, you can buy coffee at the saloon for him.
Once your farming skill reaches level 4, you can build a preserves jar.  With this and any vegetable you can make pickles, which he loves. With one or two jars you can make a steady supply of gifts for him.
Once your farming skill reaches level 8, you can make a keg and then make wine from fruit and berries, which he also loves.  His birthday is Winter 14, but you can easily max out your relationship with him before this point.
Sadly, there is no point in your relationship arc where you can convince him to do something about that stupid mustache.
Leah:
Leah loves salads, which are cheaply and easily available at the saloon.  She also spends a lot of evenings in the saloon, especially in the spring, so it’s easy to gift her these.
Gather leeks and dandelions in the spring and save them.  Once you are at 3 hearts of friendship with Emily, she will send you the recipe for salad so you can make it yourself.  You’ll still need to buy vinegar from the store.
If you run out of salad makings, once you are at farming level 8 you can make a keg and brew wine for her.
Save any driftwood you catch during fishing, as Leah is the only one who likes it.  She also likes nearly any foraged mushroom, fruit, or vegetable.
Her birthday is Winter 23, but you can easily max out her relationship well before this so there’s not much need for the birthday bonus.
Punch her ex in the face and feel good about it.
Maru:
Grow lots of cauliflower in the spring.  She also likes strawberries, but you don’t get the seeds for them till halfway through the spring and they’re better saved as a cash crop.  Save the cauliflower and dole it out to her twice a week, and if you have any gold-quality ones save one for her birthday on Summer 10.  Don’t bother with the cheese cauliflower recipe, since just the cauliflower by itself gives the same bonus.
You can also tap trees for oak resin and pine tar, and you can also give her any quartz you come across in the upper mine levels.
Don’t let her dad scare you off.
Penny:
Penny loves poppies, so plant a lot of them in the spring. Gift them to her, but if you get a perfect quality one save it for her birthday on Fall 2.
In the summer, grow melons.  It’s easy to grow a huge number and save them for a continual stream of gifts.
In the winter, or in the ice levels of the dungeons, you may find winter roots.  Combine these with cave carrots to make the roots platter.
Above all else, do not tell her you don’t like kids. Penny may be a meek little doormat, but she will dump you without a second thought if you don’t like kids.
Sam:
   ...really?
Take a good hard look at your life and re-evaluate the choices that you have made to lead you to this decision.  If you still want to go through with this:
The pond near your farmhouse has a high catch rate of Joja Cola cans.  Sam is the only one in town who likes the damn stuff.  Fish them out and give them to him.
You can also buy pizza from the saloon for him, especially for his birthday on Summer 17.  He also loves tigerseye, so if you get any from processing geodes or mining save them for him.
But really, there are many better choices.
Sebastian:
First, make friends with Linus, the homeless man who lives in a tent near the mines.  He likes most types of foraged foods, and loves yams but you won’t have access to them until the fall. Once you are at 3 hearts he will send you the recipe for sashimi.  This meal requires only a single fish of any type as an ingredient, and it’s one of Sebastian’s favorite foods.
Until you get the recipe, you can give him quartz.  Once you have it, a little fishing will yield a constant supply of gifts for him.  His birthday is on Winter 10.
The biggest challenge will be finding him to give him the gift, he’s a reclusive emo loner who spends a lot of time either in his bedroom or random obscure parts of the map.  He does have a regular friday night thing with Abigail and Alex in the arcade room in the saloon.  Once you get beyond two hearts of friendship, you should be able to just go straight into his room while he’s there.
Shane:
Buy him beer twice a week from the saloon.  He’ll be easy to find, as he spends most evenings in the saloon drinking.  If you feel guilty about fueling his addiction you can buy him pizza instead, but it’s more expensive.  Remember his birthday is on Spring 20.  Shane is the easiest character to get a dance with at the first flower dance, if you give him two gifts every week and one on his birthday you should have the required 4 hearts.
In the summer, grow some hot pepper plants, and switch to giving him these instead of beer.  This matches with his storyline, as he will be trying to cut back on drinking by this point anyway.  He’ll send you a recipe for pepper poppers, but don’t bother with it - just giving him the peppers straight has the same result.
Be prepared for the feels.  Shane’s story has some rough spots, but it gets better.
