Though the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stopped counting Covid-19 cases, according to wastewater data—which emerged early on as an accurate tracker of the ebbs and flows of the virus—we are currently in one of the biggest surges of the pandemic, amid the spread of a new variant, JN-1, as the virus keeps mutating. More than three-quarters of U.S. hospital beds are currently in use due to Covid hospitalizations. Uptake of the most recent booster shot, which should help to protect against the new variant and lower the risk of severe cases and the odds of getting long Covid, hovers around 19 percent.
Meanwhile, the most recent White House response to a question about whether they had any guidance for hospitals, some of which have brought back mitigation protocols in response to the most recent Covid spike, came courtesy of press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre: “Hospitals, communities, states, they have to make their own decisions. That’s not something we get involved in,” she replied, appearing exasperated.
“We are in possibly the second-biggest surge of the pandemic if you look at wastewater levels,” said Dr. Monica Verduzco-Gutierrez, who runs a long-Covid clinic at the University of Texas, San Antonio, and has had ongoing Covid symptoms since August 2022. “There is no urgency to this. No news. No discussion in Congress. There is no education.”

The consequences of discarding all Covid precautions are becoming clearer, as more people get repeated infections and long-term symptoms, amid an alarming spike in heart problems among healthy young people. People are getting sick more often not due to the myth of “immunity debt,” which posits that the lack of exposure to other people during lockdown has made people less able to fight off infections (three years later), but because Covid weakens the immune system. Each time someone contracts Covid, the odds of long-term complications increase.

Setting Blurb: The Texan MacroCommunity (Reworked)
As society began to break down within the United States leading up to and during the Third World War, the New Tribal Movement emerged, and called for the recreation of tribes as socio-political movements. The most prominent of these was the Hispano-Gaels, an organization that blended pre and post-Columbian Latin American and Gaelic Celtic culture. They were also the most militant, and aided like-minded groups across the United States as WW3 broke out and broke down society. Eventually, the federal government began to pull support from all states west of the Mississippi, and then dissolved anticlimactically.
From the resulting power vacuum, the Hispano-Gaels and other groups across the political spectrum began to cooperate and compete for control of the Lone Star State. The Hispano-Gaels allied and absorbed the many militias and other New Tribes in the eastern half of Texas. Two other protostates emerged and were based around Austin and San Antonio. It was around this time that a young Ignacio Rotthey was inducted into the Hispano-Gaelic leadership, and he quickly made a name for himself with his diplomatic skills. Convincing the San Antonian protostate that the Austinites were calling for aid in subduing the rest of Texas, Ignacio was able to form an alliance between the Hispano-Gaels and San Antonio, and then conquer Austin. Patronage of the "right" leaders made San Antonio a Hispano-Gaelic client in all but name, and Texas was fully theirs.
Several decisions and policies of the Hispano-Gaels made in regards to what Texan society would become would later be used in the future League. Parents were incentivized to train their children how to perform their work (what would later develop into the Great Class System), and the territory controlled by Austin was carved up into smaller and more manageable clients (predecessor to the National Delimitation Zones). The city of Austin itself, a bombed and shelled wreck, was used as a dumping ground for "noncompliants" until they were later expelled to the independent Cordons Sanitaire.
The Texan Tribal Federation, as it was called at the time, began to consolidate its borders and reach out to the other post-American protostates. The Grand State of Virginia, a militaristic and corporatist protostate, was the first to answer to Ignacio's calls for cooperation (and subjugation of any entity that was not like-minded). Their first act of mutual aid and friendship was their intervention in the American South, ensuring that there were only allies and clients between the two. Other like-minded groups requested aid in the Mid and Southwestern portions of the former United States, as well as a few in what used to be Canada and Mexico. After solidifying the formation of the "League of Corporate Communities" and putting down a rival alliance in Cascadia and the American Northeast. It was also around this time that the Tribal Federation absorbed Oklahoma and a large chunk of New Mexico (to return Texas to its "natural borders").
This League further expanded to the rest of the Americas, Europe, Russia, and China. Ignacio's calls for greater cooperation resulted in the League transforming from a defensive alliance to a federation with its own governing body. Ignacio would become the elected head of state, and would then be later crowned Emperor following the new Corporate Empire (CorpEmp)'s expansion into Africa and the rest of Asia. As a way of not showing favoritism to any one member of CorpEmp, Ignacio abdicated his position as ruler of Texas in favor of creating an itinerant court.
Adelsverein Standestaat:
One of two provinces created from the former Austinite territory, the Adelsverein Standestaat was formed around Texas' German communities. As the titular culture of the region, Texasdeutsch is now the primary language spoken.
Cimmerian Tribal Zone:
The second province carved out of occupied Austin was named after a creation of the region's former resident: Robert E. Howard. These supposed sons of Conan the Barbarian have a few daughter colonies across CorpEmp space.
Comanche Corporate Republic:
The homeland of the Comanche was restored following the Hispano-Gaelic absorption of the Texas panhandle. The Comanche have become the both an energy and martial powerhouse within Texas, second only to the Hispano-Gaels in their contribution to the Imperial Armed Forces.
The Hispano-Gaelic Tribal Zone:
The core territory of the Hispano-Gaels, their Tribal Zone serves as the capital province of Texas. Although the titular people of the Zone, Eastern Texas has a large amount of smaller, vassal tribal groups (primarily AfroTex and AngloTex tribes).
Hispano-Gaelic Septs:
Wherever they went, the Hispano-Gaels elected to settle a warband or two in areas annexed by them. Over time, these Septs would help the locals assimilate into Hispano-Gaelic culture (or at least into the New Tribal Movement), and create new sources of manpower for the Imperial Armed Forces.
Land Force Demesne Hood:
While it had been looted by various warlords and militias following the collapse of the American Government, the old Fort Hood was reconstituted first as a staging area for the conquest of Austin, and then as a land hold for the newly created Imperial Army. As a Land Force Demesne, Hispano-Gaelic warriors and other martial peoples residing in Texas arrive to prove their worth in the Austin proving grounds and become members of the Imperial Armed Forces.
Neo-Mescalero Tribal Zone:
One of the two restored homelands for the Apache within the Texan MacroCommunity. The Neo-Mescalero were given territory along the Texan-New Mexican border.
Neo-Jicarilla Tribal Zone:
The second restored Apache homeland in Texas. The Neo-Jicarilla were given all territory in northwestern New Mexico that weren't given to the Navajo-Hopi Corporate Republic.
Nuevomexicano Corporate Republic:
The Nuevomexicanos/Hispanos of New Mexico were given the northeastern corner of New Mexico as their "homeland". They really like to put turquoise on everything over there.
Sequoyah Corporate Republic:
The Sequoyah Corporate Republic was created following the Texan annexation of Oklahoma. While still home to many Native American tribes that were forcibly relocated to the state, many have begun to migrate to their former homelands in neighboring Dixica, or to the many orbital habitats constructed across Imperial space.
Tejano Corporate Republic:
The first protostate to ally with the Hispano-Gaels, San Antonio and south Texas were reorganized to serve as the homeland for the original Hispanic settlers of Texas.

12. Talk about a new friend you made this year
So I actually reconnected with this girl I was friends with in high school! It’s a cool story, imo:
We were both in choir in high school, but different grades AND different schools but the same district. My senior year we went through the All State Choir audition process together and always hung out and had a good time and played games during auditions and then I graduated and we weren’t close so we lost touch.
Flash forward to August 2023, I’m at my first MasterSingers rehearsal and during the bathroom break I run into her and I’m like omg you looks SO familiar?? Did you go to so-and-so high school? And IT WAS HER! What I think is really cool is that we don’t have each other on social media, neither of us live in our hometown anymore, and it’s both our first years with this choir!
She had just moved to SA and I was looking to make more friends and get out more so the timing was kind of perfect because now we have someone to go out with and we went to this speed dating thing together (that ended in catastrophic failures for both of us lmaoo) and we go shopping and karaoke together!
Since moving to San Antonio, I’ve gotten used to doing a lot of things on my own, but it’s really nice to have a friend to do things with :)
18. A memorable meal this year?
So my brother got married last week and they had a mother fucking TACO BAR. And my family is Mexican so I’m not talking about the little Taco Bell crunchy tacos (although I won’t lie… Taco Bell is my guilty pleasure). These were REAL tacos with fried corn tortillas and carne asada and rajas and refried beans and two different types of salsa and THE BEST FUCKING RICE I have EVER had omg.
(But tbh every time I go to my hometown I eat SO good)

Five Hours Or Less
People have laughed at Jeff Bezos for about as long as he has been in business with Amazon. When he launched Prime in 2005, people scoffed about why we might need something in two days. When he started talking about drones in 2013, people laughed even harder, and some people threatened to shoot them down from the sky.
Prime is still with us and going strong, and drones are starting to take off. But not everything can be carried by them, necessitating ground transportation, which Amazon also wants to happen faster and faster. Remember last week when we discussed Target’s sortation facilities to facilitate faster order fulfillment? Now Amazon has responded by increasing its sub-same-day delivery (SSD) to include 100,000 items. The goal is to never let more than five hours elapse between order placement, order picking, and order delivery, all within a 60-minute radius of a distribution center.
Not bad, once you factor in urban traffic, because SSD is only going to happen—for now, at least—in the nation’s largest cities. Think one million and up.
Amazon already has in place, or is planning to build, special smaller order fulfillment centers that only handle SSD orders. The sprawling million or more square feet DCs we see in industrial sectors along freeways and near airports will remain, but for all of the other things that Amazon sells. Basically, the new smaller warehouses will almost be like a convenience store equivalent.
Of course, there are some issues, like whether extra charges may be incurred by customers. After all, getting something delivered in a few hours comes at a price for the company. Walmart has already made such promises with its Walmart+ option. And then there is the thorny issue that many of the workers making this all happen are actually in the gig economy. This means they are not employees of the online vendor, and thus do not receive benefits. Individual states could weigh in on this in a crushing kind of way. I’m looking at you, California, as is everyone else, because you’ve already made noises about doing so.
I am most interested in the product selection that will comprise the 100,000 SKU assortment. It will have to be those items that are most frequently purchased, and typically with a current—and sometimes pressing—need. But these items are typically on the lower end of the price spectrum, and therefore don’t leave a whole lot of room for hefty margins. Volume could make up for that, but you have to actually get that volume first.
As for those gig workers, they will likely be driving personal vehicles instead of shiny new Amazon EV delivery vans. I’ve seen them before. They have a magnetic sign on their door, and they zoom around suburbia as fast as possible, because their paycheck is dependent upon their own ability to maintain delivery volume.
Then we have to think about a society that has become so busy and/or enamored of rapid delivery of everything. Are we really that busy? Or lazy, as some might say? Maybe I have it too good, with a Walmart and a United Supermarket both within a couple of minutes of my parking space. That’s pretty convenient for me, and I get what I want right now. Of course, it may mean I have to delay my workout by 15-30 minutes that day, but so be it.
And never mind that I will never be able to take advantage of SSD anyway, because of living outside a major urban area. Sorry, Amarillo and Canyon peeps: this will never happen here. You’ll have to move to Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, or Houston. And I suspect you would appreciate it greatly, because you won’t have to venture out into the never-ending traffic.
Now that I think about it, I’m rather happy that I don’t need SSD. I’ve got pretty much everything I need at my fingertips. Anything else can wait two days, just like I have been doing since Prime was introduced.
And don’t worry about drones out here on the High Plains. The way the wind was blowing two days ago makes that kind of thing a losing proposition.
I think we’d all be having the last laugh on Mr. Bezos.
I mean, unless he could harness an 80mph wind to his advantage.

Webb Telescope Reveals a Spectacular Universe ~ 14 Jul 2022, Philip Sedgwick
Monday last, President Joe Biden held a press conference in which NASA afforded him the opportunity to release the first official photograph of an image captured by the powerful Webb telescope, previewing Tuesday’s official release of a handful of pictures. The image he revealed was of SMACS 0723, an image of grand galactic goulash with clarity and conciseness never before seen by human eyes.
Known as SMACS J0723.3-7327 by its more official, coordinate-infused name, one might expect this object revealed by the President to have connections with his natal chart. Well, this galactic grouping appears on the zodiac at 23 Scorpio 35 - a degree which virtually bisects the Sun and Venus in Biden’s natal chart and trines his Jupiter in Cancer. There’s an astrological eyebrow raiser for you!
This galactic cluster image reveals the effects of gravitational lensing such as is organically conducted by gigantic galactic goodies like the Great Attractor and the Shapley Attractor. This is the property of being so gravitationally significant the object bends light such that what lies behind the object can be seen.

Isole e Olena adds a bit of Canaiolo to the Sangiovese and those deep, dark fruit elements of the added grape come out strongly in this vintage.
