MacQueen’s (Virgil Hilts) Back in The Cooler
The warning signs were everywhere if only one had paid attention.
Meg (and I) had thought it was a good time to have pigs again.  There was a time when every croft had a pig - they turned over the ground, ate the scraps, fertilized the soil and fed the family.
First warning.  Every croft no longer has a pig.
We wanted pigs that hadn’t travelled far so we booked a couple of piglets from Farmer Giles along the road who had more piglets than you could shake a stick at (shake a stick - hold that thought.)  Unfortunately I hadn’t specified that I wanted wee girlie pigs as I hadn’t heard a lot of positive stories about wee boy pigs - even though I’d met the father - Steve Ham - who’s a real sweetheart, just like his original namesake who is a good pal of Spooks.....
Tumblr media
And of course, the other folk wanting piglets had specified no boys, so we got 2 boys.  2nd warning.
Tumblr media
3rd warning came in the efforts it took Farmer Giles to get the wee darlings into the roomy container we had brought.  I was a little alarmed to say the least and when one of them made a very good attempt to escape even when I was sitting on the lid - well, I’ll just include that in warning number 3.
I suppose the 4th was the look of sheer delight as we drove off with the boys with  Farmer Giles’s good lady saying ominously “I can’t wait to read the blog...........”
Tumblr media
I wasn’t risking another escape attempt until we were ready.  We had the electric fence all fired up with plenty of space for them to roam and turn over a future tattie patch for us........22 seconds after releasing them, they were through the fence and away up the croft.  That’s not really a warning - that’s just exactly why Spook didn’t want any more pigs and that was the gist of the lecture Meg and I had to endure along with how much pork you could buy in Lidls for the price of 2 pesky piglets.  We hung our heads in shame and despair and knew there was nothing for it but to chase them around the hill field part of the croft.  We knew from experience that new piggies don’t recognise us as their saviours and no amount of feed bucket rattling will bring them back.  Unfortunately, the cows knew exactly what a rattly feed bucket was and as I ran around after the piglet, the 7 young cows ran after me.  They were also very curious about the pig and were helpful in locating it amongst the bracken and gorse and after about an hour they managed to scare one of them back into the pig area - let’s call him Wilbur - whereupon Spook rugby tackled it and managed to get it into the pig hut where it was unceremoniously penned in. We felt encouraged by the piglets instinct for it’s new home but unfortunately piglet number 2 had no such instinct.  Indeed his instinct was for hiding in the undergrowth.  We flushed him out, ran him up and down the croft (in our welly boots) until even the cows got bored.  Meg held the fort back at base in case he came home and got eaten by midges while we got soaked in the undergrowth.  The piglet got slower and slower but even then, our sprints weren’t fast enough and he was getting better at hiding in the growing gloom of the night.  After almost 3 hrs we had to give up.  Too dark, too tired and hopeful that with a little less chasing, he might come home himself and be conveniently waiting  for us in the morning.
Tumblr media
There’s nothing pretty about pig hunting.......(unless you are a Kiwi girl or an Aussie girl, but I was wanting this piggy alive - not dead.)
We had a large dram and went to bed.
A fresh approach was required in the morning when there was no pig to greet us other than a very sad and lonely one sat in a hut, and so a coordinated effort was planned with walkie-talkies, Meg and her sore leg on the quad bike, shorts and hill running shoes.  Spook fashioned a net with weights on it that would be further reaching than his dive bombing abilities.  The target just had to be located.
I got a call on the radio stating that the quarry had been spotted.  I thought it was actually AT the quarry along the road so it was a relief to know that it was still in the hill field.  I made some final preparations......
Tumblr media
I’d heard you had to flush it out and stick it, so I also managed to find a couple of sticks and ran around the croft waving them in a fairly ineffective manner.
It’s quite a small pig and quite a big field......
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quad Girl turned out to be remarkably adept on the bike.
The Boss turned up to put heat on the pig whom he thought should be named after his father - Steve.........MacQueen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On and on and on and in and out of bushes we went, until suddenly, an exhausted wee pig surrounded on 3 sides found itself floored by a magnificent tackle from Spook.  Meg and I were despatched for the container while The Boss and he pinned the wee begger down.  I had an inspired thought that Granny’s hen catcher crate would be of use so we brought that too.  We lined it up in front of MacQueen and just as I was wondering if maybe we should have the other container involved as well, Spook let go of the pig which shot into the crate and straight through the webbing (which I had thought was wire caging but was in fact very soft plastic) and out the other side.  The look on Spook and The Boss’s faces said ‘divorce - with immediate effect’.  I couldn’t really think what to say...........”sorry?”
We just had to soldier on   Shoulders were slumped, MacQueen was exhausted but had mastered the act of disappearing into the thickest gorse bush and had learnt to restrain from grunting.  We all took turns at crawling into the gorse. Emotions were becoming strained.  Spook was no longer affectionately calling me ‘Honey’.  The Boss had a desparate moment when a piece of bracken got caught in his ‘sports’ sandal and he thought it was a frog.  He was on the brink of screaming and tossing the sandal into the gorse but managed to pull himself together in time to see it for what it was.  Finally he could commit no more time to the matter and had to bid us farewell.
Backwards and forwards across the hill field we went as MacQueen struggled to run up a hill by now.  I was aware that we were playing the nasty Nazi role here but truly we were feeling very sorry for MacQueen and wishing he would submit so we could reunite him with his brother, feed and water him - this was (not yet) to be the sad ending of The Great Escape.  (I hear you Vegetarians - I hear you.)
Spook and I had MacQueen closed into a wee gorse patch whilst Meg snoozed further up the croft in a sunny spot which had nicely heated up the quad seat.  Suddenly I realised a rugby tackle might not be required as I leant down and grabbed a hind leg.  Bingo.  Spook wasn’t taking any risks and threw himself into the gorse patch to much greater detriment of himself than MacQueen.  He wasn’t for moving until Meg and I could assure him that no more mistakes would occur. This had been another 3 hour pig hunt. We competently reunited Wilbur and MacQueen after Spook adjusted The Cooler to ensure no one was getting out until he said so.  Suddenly the mad wee piggy was the gentlest wee cratur as he and Wilbur softly grunted and touched noses and all was well.  I hope he sleeps sound tonight.
It was quite clear who the true hero of the day was (apart from MacQueen who really is the most resourceful and determined of piglets).
Tumblr media
I was wondering if I should submit my photo to Chicks Smashing Grunters or Hot Bacon - 2 Kiwi magazines devoted to the demise of big piggies.  However, I like to think that MacQueen and Wilbur might have a wee bit of a better life for a few months.  If MacQueen had stood still long enough for a photo, I would have put his picture here instead of mine.  He just needs to hope he can turn me Veggie before October.

POISONED MELODY (3/3 END)
 Revenge from the uncountable souls
how could this be beautiful?
As if this creature has a heart somewhere
trapped in a deadly spell
remember me
remember me
remember me
  “Who are you?”
Those three words again. Junyeol never knew those words could be that hurt. More than that, he noticed the female grew weaker and weaker every day. Shinhye got a head pain attack more than once in a night already. It made their times together became shorter because Junyeol had to hide from Shinhye’s father.
There’s one night when he just approached Shinhye and hugged her tightly while the latter didn’t remember him again. “What the—”, Shinhye wanted to push him away but she stopped when noticing the taller man body was shaking. The hug was cold like just coming from some snowy northern area.
Junyeol wanted to cry but he couldn’t. Vampire never cried. Not because they’re a cruel creature. They didn’t have that right because it’s one of another curses for their  kind. “I am Junyeol. Junyeol. Please remember me…”, he pleaded.
“Junyeol? Have we ever meet before?”, Shinhye released the hug then stared at the vampire. She placed her palm on the tall man’s cheek, “You’re cold and look so pale. Are you sick? Wait, I have a lot of medicine for fever in my drawer”. She walked toward the drawer but in the midway, Shinhye collapsed to the floor on her knees as she got a pain attack again. The pain looked more severe just by looking how tears streaming down on the both of her milky white skin cheeks.
Junyeol quickly got to her and held her up by his arms. He laid her on her bed and helped her to drink her medications. After the pain killer slowly showed the effect. Shinhye gave him a weary smile and her gratitude, “Thank you. Whoever you are. I think you’re a kind man”.
Junyeol held her hand and gave a peck on the backside, “Shinhye, you’re dying. Please let me help you. I… I… can change you”
Shinhye let out a weak chuckle, “I am a dying woman. Seems like it has spread faster than I expected. I hope I can make it to the prom night tomorrow.”
Junyeol shook his head, “No. You have to believe me. I am… I am a vampire. I can heal you... in a way”
Shinhye stared at the man. She didn’t look afraid nor she laughed thinking that Junyeol lied or joke to her, “If I become a vampire, can I live my life like before?”
Junyeol couldn’t answer. Of course it would change. She would become immortal but she wouldn’t be back like her old self. She would never become the sweet Shinhye like she originally was.
Shinhye smiled, eyes looked up to the ceiling, “I like sunrise. It’s warm and beautiful.”
Junyeol had no idea why this dying woman still be able to smile like that even though her lifespan became shorter and shorter. How this woman was accepting her cruel fate so easily.
Shinhye tried to get up and Junyeol helped her. Her eyes landed toward the harmonica which laid on a table. Junyeol took it and smiled at her, “Ac…actually I am your fan. I like listening the song you’re playing with this harmonica. I think it’s beautiful.”
Shinhye’s eyes grew wider slightly, “Really? Thank you. My friend Jongsukkie gave me this harmonica so I won’t feel bored hehe…”
“I…I have a song which is good to be played for your prom night tomorrow. Can I play it in front of you now?”
This time she showed her white teeth in her smile, “Sure. What’s the title of the song?”
“How about ‘Isn’t she lovely’?”
Shinhye chuckled, “It’s my favourite”, she said then folded her feet and rested her chin between them, ready to watch the vampire performed a mini concert only for her.
Junyeol stood 2 feet in front of her. His eyes never moved from the female. He started to attach the harmonica to his lip and blew some air toward the holes. It’s the song which just had been released recently. He often played it absentmindedly with piano to seduce his victims, but this time, he played it sincerely in front of this person. Every note, every line, every word. He meant it all.
While listening his play, Shinhye closed her eyes and kept smiling. Sometimes she was swaying her head right and left, also tapping her fingers. Junyeol was glad she’s enjoying it. The life picture in front of the vampire meant forever to him. He knew he’s falling and didn’t even care had he reached the abyss of this unrequited love or not.
He’s happy and this feeling was overwhelming without his control. He wasn’t sure what he would become after this woman disappeared. Could he go back to his previous routines? Seeing this woman’s smiles had already become his main addiction. He doubted if he could be intoxicated from this infatuation.
Right at that second, he had decided.
 ****
Junyeol came again. This time he prepared  a bouquet of red rose and moss flower which meant 'confession'. But strangely he didn’t hear Shinhye’s playing her harmonica again. He became worried and quickly came to her room but the female was no where to be found.
He noticed Shinhye’s room looked in a mess. Like some thieves had intruded there. He took something from the floor. Shinhye’s harmonica. Then he sniffed something’s familiar. The smell from his own kind. A vampire.
His forehead frowned, eyes squinted and flashed red furiously, and his sharp fangs emerged from his gum as he gritted them in angers. He muttered someone’s name, “Junsu….”, before jumping out of the window in a light speed.
He arrived to his castle in a rage, “Junsu!!! Junsu!! Where are you?”
“Junyeol?” The said man was standing in front of the fireplace.
Without anymore thinking, he grabbed Junsu’s collar and glared at him, “Where is she??!!”
His fellow vampire friend looked confused, “What do you mean?”
Junyeol pulled him closer, “I know a vampire just come before me and took her. The only vampire who know about my regular visits is only you, except… did you tell them?”
Junsu grabbed Junyeol’s collar back, “See?! I told you!!! They’re watching us!! Do you know what punishment you will get from Cainity for falling in love to a human?”
Junyeol released him. He was panting hard because of his angers, “I don’t care about that, Junsu. It’s about Shinhye. If they lay even a finger toward her, I swear I will kill them all”.
Junsu knew very well that Junyeol wasn’t joking when he said that. The other vampire was from the rare Ryu Clan, the strongest vampire clan in South Korea. Junyeol meant to go outside to search Shinhye by tracking her smell before Junsu prevented him, “Wait… Junyeol. Calm a bit. Did you happen meet someone on the way to her house or  feel another vampire following you these days?”
Junyeol turned and stared at him. His mind got a sudden flashback that he did meet someone on his way to the forest before.
“Hey Lord Ryu! It’s been so long for us to hang out together. I’ve rarely seen you in the city nowadays”
“I am sorry. I am kind of busy now”
 ****
At an abandoned warehouse, not so far from her house. She sat on a cold floor, hands were tied behind her with a tight rope. A tall figure came and knelt closer toward her. She eyed the stranger with fear, “Who…who are you?”
The stranger smirked and touched her cheek with his cold slender fingers, “Easy…baby. I won’t hurt you as long as you obey me. Well… at least for now.”
The stranger kissed her cheek and started it in a way Shinhye disliked, “Hmmm…. No wonder he’s attracted to you. You aren’t only sweet but smell good…” The stranger stared at Shinhye’s eyes for a moment, “I want to taste you”, he said and meant to attach his lip to her but someone grabbed his shirt from behind and threw him flying 10 meters away.
“Don’t touch her, Jinhyuk!!! Or I kill you without considering you’re once being my friend,” Junyeol shouted out loud at him.
The other vampire smirked at him as he stood, “Hey, easy pal. We’re often share everything. Why don’t you share this cutey with me? She is a dying woman. What a wasted opportunity to not drink her blood before she—“
Junyeol quickly hit him on the face quite hard as the latter was thrown again and bumped hardly to the wall, “I am not joking when I said I will kill you!”
Jinhyuk chuckled as he stood again, “Bring it on, brother!!”
Both of them didn’t waste any time as they jumped to each other and fought with all their strength. The warehouse soon became a fierce fighting arena between two vampires in a light speed. Every punch, scratch, bite, and glare are beyond every human could imagine. It ended up with Junyeol’s win after all. He meant to give his final blow before a strong hand grabbed his own, “Stop it Junyeol! He’s already have no strength to fight you back!!!” Junsu told him.
Jinhyuk spilled some blood from his mouth then chuckled, “You have to kill her soon, Junyeol. Cainity already knew it’s from you. Some of them are probably on the way coming to your place”
Junyeol ignored him as he focused his attention to Shinhye who’s just fallen to the floor with body’s shaking and eyes closed. Junyeol quickly came to her and untied the rope on her hands. He took Shinhye by his arms, “Shinhye, are you okay? Do you get a headache again?” Junyeol asked her in worry.
Shinhye opened her eyes, “You are…”
Junyeol gulped for a second. He knew Shinhye didn’t recognize him again. He tried to find a way to explain about what had happened and who he was, “I am… I am…”
“Are you… Junyeol? A vampire who played with my harmonica yesterday?”
Junyeol’s eyes  were wide in shock, “You…you remember me?”
Shinhye shook her head weakly, “No. I don’t remember ever meeting you before. But I found a diary. It’s strangely in my handwritten. I don’t know how I got one and why I decided to write it. At the first page I wrote about a cute vampire who had a very nice voice and played a beautiful song for me. I didn’t believe at first especially with the date”, she managed to let out a weak chuckle.
Then an amount of liquid was flowing from Junyeol’s left eye. He couldn’t believe that was happening. Him. A vampire was crying, “Shinhye…”
The female asked in a whisper, “Why are you crying?”. She started to wipe the tears with her right thumb, “It’s strange... We just meet by tonight, but why I feel I’ve known you a long ago?”
“Shinhye. Please I can change you…”, Junyeol begged.
Shinhye shook her head and smile, “I always like sunrise. I don’t know why but I feel like I haven’t seen the sunrise for a long time. I want to see the sunrise”
The liquid was flowing again but Junyeol quickly wiped it. He knew Shinhye would answer like that and he had settled his final decision yesterday, “I will show you. There is a beautiful garden at the backyard of my castle. I think it have a great view to watch the sunrise.”
Shinhye smiled weakly. She knew her life was in seconds remained already, “Really? Can you bring me there? I think I can’t walk by my own”
Junyeol then lifted up her body in bridal style and smiled back at her, “With pleasure, Beautiful.”
“Junyeol, No! You will—“, Junsu shouted at him then paused as he saw seeing Junyeol smiled widely at him. Not a cold smile he usually did but a happy smile. Like saying a final goodbye to his vampire friend.
“I didn’t know there’s such a beautiful castle around here”, Shinhye commented while Junyeol was bringing her through his castle. “Only my kind who can see this castle,” Junyeol replied. “It’s so big... Are you living alone by yourself?” She asked. Junyeol looked at her and nodded, “Hmm...”
“You... must feel lonely,” her words sound weaker.
“I was but not anymore,” Junyeol smiled lovingly at her. They stopped at the garden then sat her on a bench between the lines of red roses and lilies. They sat toward the east side, anticipating to watch the upcoming sun to rise up.
Junyeol circled his arm to Shinhye’s waist and let her head rested on his shoulder, “Shinhye-ah!”
“Hmm…”
“Please call my name”
“Junyeol”
“Say it again…”
“Junyeol…”
Shinhye started to feel her eyes became heavy, “You are so warm. Not feel cold anymore”
Junyeol smiled then kissed Shinhye’s hair, “You too. Please don’t sleep yet. The sun is rising”
“Are you okay?”, Shinhye whispered.
“I never feel better than now. Don’t worry. We will always be together from now on….”.
