Yesterday we went to Jodrell Bank! Jodrell Bank is the site that holds the 3rd largest telescope in the world- The Lovell Telescope.
Now, I think it's fair to say that it's a common misconception that when we hear the word 'telescope' we automatically presume we can see out of it.
The Lovell telescope was created by a gent named Sir Bernard Lovell in 1945. Lovell worked in the cosmic ray research department at Manchester University until the outbreak of the Second World War, during which he worked for the Telecommunications Research Establishment (TRE) developing radar systems to be installed in aircraft.
After the war, Lovell returned to manchester to further his research. He brought back with him equipment he had been working with and since it was no longer needed decided to use it to create a telescope originally named Mark 1.
However, due to the buzzing life of Manchester, the tram network interfered with the radio waves Lovell was trying to source. Shortly after Lovell and the team moved to Jodrell, where the Botomy department had some land, to avoid any type of interference.
Work began and in 1957 it was marked as the world's largest telescope. The amazing thing I found was that the Lovell Telescope is made from old battleships and general war equipment- totally recycled.

As a scientist, I was recently involved in bringing my work to the big screen. This was not a Hollywood sci-fi blockbuster but “big screen” in the literal sense: an art production about science that used the Lovell radio telescope, a 3,200-ton steel behemoth supporting of a 76-metre wide dish, to generate and show audio-visual art that drew on scientific data.
I have been involved with numerous public engagement opportunities over the years: giving public lectures, visiting students in schools, interacting on social media, being interviewed about new discoveries. There is however another form of public engagement that I have come to experience in the past year, which I would probably never have considered if not for the fact that it came knocking at my door: connecting with an artist developing a piece inspired by the scientific work that my colleagues and I do.
This is quite a contrast for astronomers working at the Jodrell Bank Observatory, given that a lot of our focus is normally devoted to activities such as connecting our telescope to various networks of radio dishes in order to produce ultra-sharp images of the sky or monitoring the clockwork rotation of rapidly spinning, ultra-dense exploded stellar leftovers known as pulsars. In a way though, it is perhaps not unexpected that sooner or later someone would draw inspiration from the rich history of astronomical breakthroughs accomplished using the telescope.
It pretty much started with an email – the modern door knock – from my colleague Tim O'Brien asking if I would discuss my research with an artist who had been commissioned to create an art experience which would be projected onto the Lovell radio telescope as part of the bluedot festival at the observatory. My immediate answer was yes; who would turn down the opportunity to see their work projected on a structure the area of 20 standard IMAX screens?
Art meets science
The original feeling that drove me to get involved is the same that pushes me to get up every morning to study our universe: curiosity. The unsettling difference is that with the art project it feels like I am the one under scrutiny. I am not the subject – my data is – but there is this a strange relationship that I develop with data over time. A kind of intimacy.
After all, I may spend anywhere between a couple of months to, in some cases, multiple years, working on the same set of data: processing, analysis, modelling them, and then redoing it all over. So if someone is interested in my research in order to produce art, I have an immense trepidation to discover what the artist will do with my data.

Astrophysics, like many other branches of science, lies at the cutting edge of what is called big data. We collect huge amount of data and the relevant information manifests itself as a very subtle signal buried in it. In my case my science focuses on pulsars, which illuminate the sky like (extremely faint) cosmic lighthouses. In that sense, Hidden in Plain Sight, by artist Addie Wagenknecht, is the perfect epitome of our day-to-day research challenges.
The artwork sits at the crossroad with science as Wagenknecht uses machine learning – using artificial intelligence to try and classify and interpret data on its own – in order to turn our data into art. The visual style could be described as a mosaic of irregular polygons that resembles modern dazzle camouflage. While it initially gave an impression of randomness, it gradually evolved into a more ordered rhythm of patterns varying in sized, shape and intensity.
Additionally we collaborated with Simon Jackson, an acoustic designer at engineering firm Arup to produce an immersive three-dimensional soundscape. The composition was informed and generated from data sets we shared. It rendered feelings of distance/proximity through direction of sound travel and variations in brightness/colours with frequency modulations.
Together, the sound and images translated the complexity and anomalies that signals gather on the journey to us.

Data as performance
The fascinating discovery that I’ve made working with artists is that they don’t directly try to communicate my results like I would normally do in other engagement activities. Instead, the process is a more involved experience in which they attempt to extract the essence of the research in order to turn it into an audiovisual emotion.
In 2017 I collaborated with Tokyo-based artist Daito Manabe, who focused his attention on sourcing live data from the Lovell telescope in order to turn the cosmic whispers it detected into sound and images. This was an interesting twist as the telescope acted both as projection medium and art material. The process involved in feeding data to the art installation closely followed the same steps employed to produce science, with the major difference arising in way the numbers are interpreted.

The amazing aspect of being part of these projects is that the two artists I have worked with so far did not only soak up as much of science knowledge as they could, but they were also primarily interested in understanding the actual data that I work with at various stages of the research process. They ended up using the data directly as a way of performing their art.

The science vs art dialogue is a modest contribution on my part, but somehow, I cannot help and reflect on the interaction between former Jodrell Bank director, Sir Bernard Lovell, and engineering prodigy Sir Charles Husband, which led to the master piece – both scientifically and artistically – now named after the former: the Lovell telescope.

A roadmap for the future of the QEIIMC Campus
The Hames Sharley Team and their consultants engaged with stakeholders extensively for the Master Plan of Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre (QEIIMC), which ensures a carefully planned future for the development of the campus over the next 50 years.

Over 6,130 interactions were held through survey responses, focus group participants, pop-up attendees, map comments, website views and poll responses to provide critical insight on the future direction of the Master Plan. This key information resulted in a Master Plan from Hames Sharley, which presented a sustainable solution and roadmap for the future of the QEIIMC campus.
The QEIIMC campus expands across 28-hectares of land, is one of the largest medical centres in the southern hemisphere and is globally credited in health care, research and education. The QEIIMC Campus is home to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, the University of Western Australia’s Health Campus and Lions Eye Institute.
Recent development of the Campus has delivered significant medical, educational and research infrastructure, including: a Comprehensive Cancer Centre, the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, the Ralph and Patricia Sarich Neuroscience Research Institute, the PathWest Building, the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital Mental Health Unit, the new Perth Children’s Hospital, the mortuary bereavement viewing room, and other critical infrastructure to support the Campus. Given its recognition, the Master Plan required a holistic and adaptable approach which provided a number of key themes and principles and helped future proof the development of the QEIIMC Campus.
The detailed Master Plan considers surrounding landmarks, landscape and vistas to ensure that the QEIIMC is appropriate in its location, sympathetic to the surrounding neighbourhood while capitalising on the unique characteristics of the place. The success of this Master Plan was underpinned by significant background analysis and synthesis, which was the result of extensive community and stakeholder engagement to inform its preparation. Key themes of engagement showed the community invited a focus on patients and families, staff and students, that access was critical and more vegetation on campus was an important consideration.
As a result, the Master Plan provides a potential significant increase in green space and landscape areas of 17%, reduces the building footprint by 4%, has the potential to improve passenger and frequency of public transport services and facilitates appropriate integration and relationships between existing and future clinical, research and education facilities. The above provides the potential of increasing the gross floor area and subsequently the net lettable area of future built form on the QEIIMC Campus by 48% providing a more efficient built form.
Other benefits include broader parking and access options with reduced impact on the campus environment, greater integration with the University of Western Australia and an extension of the Hampden Road amenity into the QEIIMC through a strong mixed-use zone and active transport initiative.
In delivering the Master Plan the approach was to provide a holistic viewpoint which included Planning, Design and Infrastructure; Community and Place Activation; Innovation, Enterprise and Translation to Health and Leadership and Governance. Identifying these four quadrants in the initial stages ensured innovative, sustainable and holistic outcomes were met in the process.
The QEIIMC Master Plan is a milestone for Hames Sharley which encapsulates detailed technical analysis and planning. Fundamentally, the Master Plan is an opportunity for new knowledge and information to feed back into the community. With a 50-year timeline, the campus will be shaped by the recommendations of the Master Plan and promises a vibrant and diverse ecosystem which will continuously evolve.

October 08, 2015 – Meerbrook and Jodrell Bank Observatory, Manchester, England
Greetings. Today we visited Meerbrook.  It is a small village, a hamlet, situated in the Staffordshire Moorlands in the Parish of Leekfrith.  We visited the Parish Church of St. Matthews where Mrs. Bailey is laid to rest.  One of the old gravestone at the churchyard had an epitaph of a 16-year-old girl, Hannah Taylor, who died on May 22, 1839. That six-line epitaph (poem) touched me.
Farewell, dear friends, and all,
I must obey the solemn call:
While on the earth I did remain,
I was afflicted with much pain;
And now I must lie in the dust,
In hopes of rising with the Just.

 Our lunch, Jacket Potato (baked potato) topped with Chicken Tikka Masala in a local restaurant, the Lazy Trout.  The food was lovely.

Later we drove to Jodrell Bank Observatory.  It is one of the places I always dreamed of visiting when I grew up in India.  I went to Manchester in 1975 but couldn't make it to the observatory at that time.  After 40 years, I went there today - making of one of my dreams coming true.  
The Jodrell Bank Observatory is a British observatory that hosts several radio telescopes and is part of the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Manchester. The observatory was established in 1945 by Sir Bernard Lovell, a radio astronomer at the University of Manchester who wanted to investigate cosmic rays after his work on radar during the Second World War. It has since played an important role in the research of meteors, quasars, pulsars, masers and gravitational lenses and was involved with the tracking of space probes. 
The main telescope at the observatory is the Lovell Telescope, was the largest steerable dish radio telescope in the world, 76.2 meters (250 ft) in diameter, when it was completed in 1957. It is now the third largest, after the Green Bank telescope in West Virginia and the Effelsberg telescope in Germany. Part of the gun turret mechanisms from the battleships HMS Revenge and HMS Royal Sovereign were reused in the motor system for the telescope. 
Fortunately, telescope was rotated today when we were there.  We were told it was kept in a fixed in position for about two weeks.  We were able to see the entire disc and the central tower.  The area of the disc is 1.3 acres and the central tower in the middle of the disc is about 98 feet tall.

Glad we made it to the observatory today.  In this day and age, we drove with the help of a map instead of GPS.
