New Year's Daybreak at Shirahama
Location: Shirahama Beach, Shimoda, Shizuoka, Japan Timestamp: 06:56 on January 3, 2024
Pentax K-1 II + DFA 28-105mm F3.5-5.6 31 mm ISO 800 for 1/640 sec. at ƒ8.0
My first visit to Shirahama Beach on the western coast of the Izu Peninsula located 175 km (107 mi) southwest of Tokyo was in the late 1980s. Barbecues on the beach, following a day of swimming or surfing, were popular back then. Unfortunately, as time passed, some beachgoers neglected to clean up after themselves, leading to the prohibition of beachside barbecues by the late 90s.
In response, local merchants and entrepreneurs initiated delivery services for food, drinks, beach umbrellas, and inflatable floats. They also patrolled the beach for litterbugs. Overall, this change significantly improved the beach's cleanliness for almost two decades now.
Most of my beach visits have been in summer, with a few during winter. However, this year marked my first New Year's holiday visit. After tending to the family graveyard, I took the scenic route home, making stops at Shirahama Beach and Shirahama Shrine for the traditional New Year's shrine visit (初詣・hatsumode) and to witness the first sunrise of the year (初日の出・hatsuhinode). Despite the usual recommendation to observe hatsuhinode on January 1st, I waited until January 3rd to avoid the beach crowds and heavy traffic back to Tokyo.
Setting up my camera and tripod for this shot, I paused to reflect. The crashing waves, gentle flow of seawater around beach stones, and the warm glow of the rising sun created a serene atmosphere. Amidst the fresh ocean breeze, contemplating my fortunes over the past 40 years, I found myself captivated by nature's beauty and felt grateful for the chance to appreciate this moment.

"Member of washed up furry boy band "Cheezburger Paradise", Davey is the group's token 'cinnamon roll' - in the eyes of the public, anyway. Fame makes him nervous, and he keeps a lot of his personal life close to his chest as a result - he's tried to not let stardom corrupt him like it has his bandmates, especially not their frontman, and Davey's best friend since childhood, Maceo.
"Cheezburger Paradise" was the teenybop sound sweeping the nation eleven years ago - now, though, it's long-since jaded, with members who've grown and changed, but the band hasn't split yet. Davey makes an effort to not get caught up in the cynicism of it all - he stays out of conflicts, and tries to take all things in stride, infectiously smiling for his fans just as he did when he was seventeen. Can't please everybunny!
Often accused by others of being immature, having not aged much since the band’s heyday - but the truth is, Davey’s just trying to hold onto himself, and has always been selective with information he lets both the public and his friends have access to. He'd rather people find his kindness disingenuous than become jaded and bitter.
If his music career was up to him… well, of course, he'd stick with "Cheezburger Paradise", as he genuinely loves the band and has it to thank for a lot - but he also has a sparse solo career he'd love to dedicate more of his time to… country-style beach Dad rock, the kind of music he grew up listening to before fame came fast and hard."

"Cowboy hat, spurred boots, a wide-hipped swagger and a thick southern drawl, Hironobu Shirahama carries himself with the charisma of a rich southern businessman from the mighty US of A…
Which he has never been to.
Hironobu (or Hiro, as his Western friends call him) is what you might somewhat-affectionately refer to as a Freeaboo -- a Japanese person obsessed with the United States. Stationed in Osaka, he runs an American-themed restaurant with his Japanese-American husband, Jouichi, who makes the food while he does the marketing. Hiro speaks fluent English, however, he practiced almost exclusively with cowboy movies, so he has a permanent Foghorn Leghorn-Benoit Blanc-level exaggerated drawl when he does. He has a strained and tragic relationship with his family, especially his twin sister, and he has an American truck from the 70s that he treats like his baby, despite walking or taking a train almost everywhere."

July Reading and Reviews by Maia Kobabe
I post my reviews throughout the month on Storygraph and Goodreads, and do roundups here and on patreon. Reviews below the cut.
How Far The Light Reaches: A Life in Ten Sea Creatures by Sabrina Imbler
This collection of 10 essays weaves together memories and experiences of the author's real life with the rich and varied lives of sea creatures, from octopi, Chinese sturgeon, whales, sand strikers and immortal jellyfish to yeti crabs and more. My favorite part was learning about some deep sea creatures I had never heard of before, the kinds of beings that live in oases around thermal vents on the ocean floor and survive by chemo-synthesis. I loved a story about encountering a bloom of clear, gelatinous creatures known as salps flooding the water of Riis Beach, a historically queer hangout spot in New York. This book wrestles with heavy content- one essay deals with eating disorders and parental pressure to diet, another with sexual assault and blackout drinking. It's hard for me to judge the quality of these essays when my life has not been touched by these topics, but I appreciated the author's honesty and the thoughtful maritime metaphors.
Comfort Me With Apples by Catherynne M Valente read by Karis Campbell
I listened to this 2 hour novella all in one afternoon. It's another spooky little fairy tale from a master of the genre, but if I tell you which one it's a remix of that would spoil the surprise. This wasn't deep or as original as some of Valente's work, but her writing is so vivid with flavors, sensations, smells, colors, I was thoroughly engaged the whole time.
Cry Wolf by Charlie Adhara read by Erik Bloomquist
Human Cooper Dayton and his werewolf boyfriend Oliver Park are engaged and beginning to plan their wedding, which is stressing Cooper out- not least because his family, who he didn't talk to much for a couple years, are being very supportive and it's weirding him out. Also, the chaotic scientist who threatened to expose the werewolf community and then turned herself in to werewolf government asking for a deal is making vague threats about enemies Cooper doesn't even know about. Then a body is discovered at the DC zoo, a werewolf killed and frozen in a half transformed state- nothing that the werewolves have ever seen before. I am still very entertained by this series as a whole and glad I listened to all of them, but I did want a little more than this book delivered on mysterious enemy front. There was a conspiracy, but it wasn't as far reaching as I was lead to believe by the cliffhanger ending of book 4. However, if you are reading these books more for the spicy scenes and romantic plot line, you won't be disappointed.
Shadow Scale by Rachel Hartman
What an ambitious and satisfying follow up to Seraphina! This book is much longer than the first one, and adds a ton of new elements and so many twists and turns. It opens with Seraphina, court musician of Goredd, setting out on a journey to find and recruit her fellow half-dragons to the war effort. The dragon society is being torn part by civil war, and some of the dragons will be coming to south to attack human settlements soon. Seraphina finds many new friends, but also encounters her oldest enemy- a half dragon who invaded her mind and attempted to control her as a girl. I really loved the way this book expanded the world and the various societies who live in it. It did a wonderful job of maintaining the pace and rising stakes over more than 600 pages; it also has a hinted at queer/poly relationship in the ending that really delighted me. I will definitely be reading more!
Eniale & Dewiela vol 1 by Kamome Shirahama
This series was pitched to me as "Good Omens with lesbians" but sadly I wouldn't say it lives up to that claim. It's by the same author as "Witch Hat Atelier" and it is just a beautifully drawn, but it's missing an emotional core to really hold the plot together. Each chapter is essentially a standalone story about a demon and angel who have been in petty conflict for millennia; the theft of a tube of lipstick or pair of earring will set of a battle that destroys half a city. One fun element is that the leads can both magically change their outfits, as well as grow and shrink their wings, at will; the looks are all so fun.
Eniale & Dewiela vol 2 by Kamome Shirahama
This comic is more visually beautiful than it is actually interesting to read. Eniale and Dewiela fight with each other over the soul of a child with a sick mother, then over a priest who feel in love with a criminal. One chapter is set in Japan and shows a conflict in which Japanese gods and spirits prove more powerful than Christian ones. I don't really have any emotional investment in any character or any story line but I'll probably read the last book in the series anyway.
The Wicked Bargain by Gabe Cole Novoa read by Vico Ortiz
Mar is transmasc nonbinary, a pirate, and a magic user who can control fire and ice. On their 16th birthday, disaster strikes the ship they live and work on with their father and a crew as close as family-a storm takes the crew, and El Diablo comes for Mar's father's soul. Somehow, Mar is spared and wakes up on a different ship, also crewed by pirates who steal from the Spanish and give food, weapons, and other supplies to those in the Caribbean islands fighting Spanish control. Mar strikes up a somewhat reluctant friendship with a boy their age on the ship, and refuses to the negotiate with a demonio who says they can help Mar free their father's soul. This story has a lot of fun elements, and the audiobook is expertly read by Vico Ortiz. But I didn't love this book as much as I wanted to. I found the first half quite slow, and overall felt like not quite enough happened to justify the length. I loved the nonbinary rep and the Spanish phrases in the dialogue, but wanted faster pacing and quicker reveals, especially of the demonio's motivations.
The Joy Luck Club (abridged) written and read by Amy Tan
I listened to the abridged version of the audiobook, which is read by the author, and only runs for 2.5 hours (the full book is 9 hours). This turns the full length novel into a much more concise novella of interlocking short stories, each one quite poetic and moving. I love reading books set in and around San Francisco, as are the scenes from this book which aren't set in China. The stories focus on four women, friends and mahjong partners, who met after immigrating to the Bay Area, and their daughters. The daughters are mostly in their mid-30s, at various stages of their careers and marriages, and at varying levels of close with their families and Chinese heritage. The mothers recount stories from their childhoods and their flight from war in the 1940s. I know I watched part of the movie adaption once, and maybe also read part of the full length novel in high school, because a few scenes felt so familiar while others sounded unfamiliar and new. I would like to pick up the full novel at some point, but I also really enjoyed hearing the dialogue in the author's own voice.

i have been reading some of the mangas i was recommended after seeking recs a little while ago (those being mangas that are life-changingly good and/or starkly bizarre). here is a little update. if you have more such recommendations, i will gladly accept them in reply to this post!
i will talk about 3 mangas in this post. there are only spoilers in this post for the third manga, which starts in the third paragraph.
i got the most recommendations for dungeon meshi. i read from the beginning and caught up with it and really enjoyed it. it is excellent. there is truly something special about dungeon meshi. i will note that "delicious in dungeon" is a stupid title translation when either "dungeon dining" or "dungeon dinner" would be smoother and more accurate. unless kui-sensei decided on that herself. but no, even then i think it's dumb. anyway the comic is really good. i don't especially have a lot to say about it, though. i'm going to reread it soon and then maybe i will compile some thoughts.
i only got one recommendation for witch hat atelier, but some of my mutuals have posted a lot about it in the recent past, so i went for that one next. this manga also has something very special about it, and it is quite good. it's just that it's a little saccharine for my taste. i really appreciate the striking main conflict of the story's world (i.e., that there are human-imposed restrictions not only on who can perform magic, but on which magic can be performed, and there are disagreements on which restrictions, if any, are actually necessary), which is both thought-provoking and not easily solvable. the worldbuilding is the strong point of the story, in my view. the magic system is intriguing and charming. but i guess i would just say… that this manga… doesn't pass the C.O.C.K. test. (3 out of 4 points; it is not Completely unhinged). but it's good! it's wonderful. and the art is amazing, of course. i can't believe shirahama-sensei signed herself up to draw those outfits over and over and over and over. speaking of which, shirahama kamome has to be a pseudonym, right? there's no way someone would actually directly be named "white beach" (shirahama) "seagull" (kamome). i'm pretty sure. also i really hate olruggio's nasty little beard and i can't get over it. sorry olruggio. also there's no good way to transliterate his name...
i got several recommendations for golden kamuy. i don't remember why i decided to take the plunge with this one, but it's worth noting that i did not remember (though i was once told) that it was historical fiction about a military guy searching for gold in hokkaido. i think i might need to start every manga without knowing a thing about it, because if i had properly understood the premise before i started reading, then i might have been turned off by my own internal prejudices. for example, i am not necessarily inclined to read historical fiction. military historical fiction in particular is actually something i actively would not care to read because i am so absolutely uninterested. and military historical fiction that doesn't have anything weird about it (like time travel or something), military historical fiction that ostensibly takes place in our real world, would strike me as the least interesting subset of the already not very appealing historical fiction genre. and realistic military historical fiction where the main character is motivated by MONEY sounds even worse to me! but because i started the comic having forgotten all that (though i knew it once), i was able to give it the benefit of the doubt. and i was greatly rewarded! because this is the life-changingly good AND starkly bizarre manga i've been looking for!!!
you see… the genre doesn't matter here… all that matters is how Completely unhinged it is!!!!! any genre can be great if it's insane enough!!!!!!! all you have to do is make everyone really messed up in different ways and have weird and stupid shit happen! i love it! and it's not just shenanigans! there's beautiful stuff and heavy stuff and strong character building and painstakingly researched everything mixed in. it's a 10 in too many categories. there's so much to take in and think about. the comic relief is so rewarding. everyone jumps when they get to the beach because that's what you do for the beach episode. i LOVE erstwhile enemies to tentative allies. i LOVE frenzied action pulling you rapidly toward a truth you're not sure you want. i LOVE alliance of opportunity growing into real friendship. i LOVE unnecessarily sexy bath scene where everyone is posing for the camera. i went into a frenzy of bewildered rage and delight when ogata did the flehmen response. what could have prepared me for that?! THERE'S TOO MUCH GOOD STUFF!!! do i have any complaints?! NO!!!!t right now. i mean i guess i can complain that i still don't care about military history. but it all always comes down to "war is hell" in the end, so you can say that i got the message. and some jokes… were taken about 25% too far. but i can overlook that as a mercy on my part.
i watched as much of the golden kamuy anime as there is, and they sure cut out a lot of stuff (usually justified). i only realized about an hour ago that a lot of the cut out parts were made into OVAs, which i'll have to watch next. the voice actors are all great for their roles (especially ogata) uhh except maybe for some of the protracted russian speech, which is not very acted. i do have to say that the OPs and EDs are very milquetoast. it's like they were designed to be skipped (and maybe they were?). if it's not clear, i think the wackiness of golden kamuy is a great strength. yet the OPs and EDs played everything completely straight and kind of framed the series as if it were first and foremost a drama. but even if it were just a drama, the openings could have been better. i can't help but compare to jujutsu kaisen, where the OPs and EDs were pretty much stellar; they were full of energy and bright and exciting and the songs were good. i was often compelled to NOT skip them. they more than did justice to JJK's story and its weak characters. [this has been my obligatory shitting on jujutsu kaisen.] for golden kamuy, it's the opposite situation. maybe it's mostly that i didn't like the songs? perfectly generic anime OP limp rock music. liiimp.
anyway i also have to give golden kamuy props for delivering me the happy ending i was DESPERATELY hoping for. my default treatment for an unknown manga is utmost distrust with respect to character death (i hate character death), and that's how i treated golden kamuy right up to the end, despite tonal indications that there would be a happy ending. it's especially worrying when there are two protagonists! i can't allow myself to vulnerably believe in my heart that they'll BOTH survive, because maybe the plot armor will only cover one of them! but noda-sensei brought me just what i wanted, and i'm so happy. golden kamuy was so good that i've decided to instantly reread it, with a closer reading this time, given that i now know how certain characters will develop (and what kind of glow-up they'll get, like with ogata. please ignore how many times i've mentioned ogata in this post.) also, i read the whole thing without really fully actually understanding how popular it has been… particularly among the fujoshi. the pixiv ship tags are heaping with bounty… though as i was reading, i'll admit i didn't have shipping on the brain too much. the momentum was pulling me along too much for me to focus on anything but canon. but, you know, the ships... i'll consider some of them.
anyway, in conclusion, the golden kamuy manga gets an A+ from me. though i don't know who i might recommend it to in my personal life because i don't know if anyone around me has the appropriate appetite for stupid dick jokes specifically. and i don't know if anyone around me has the appropriate appetite for this amount of Strange Men. golden kamuy is truly a bumper crop of Strange and Exciting Weird Horrible Men. Something is Really Wrong with All These Men.
i also want to note (this is still about golden kamuy) that Everyday Heroes scans did a fantastic job (insofar as i can tell without having seen the raws) with their scanlation and especially with their truly indispensible glossary/translation notes at the end of most chapters. i would have been absolutely shit out of luck if not for their careful explanations of cultural and ecological and historical notes carefully compiled for us clueless readers. i mean, i think they said that they got a lot of the content of the notes from reddit, but what matters is putting it together and putting it with the chapter where i can't miss it. i bet the official translation has no such notes and leaves readers as clueless as ever. and the scanlation itself was always very clean, consistent, natural, and respectful. good job EH Scans.
maybe i'll make more posts about golden kamuy in the future.

.:For MiyanoWeek2023:.
Miyano is a mermaid curious about the human world. When he ventures to the surface, he finds a human named Sasaki. Their lives become intertwined the moment Miyano decides to kiss him.
Mermaid Fantasy AU. BL. Side Pairings: KagiHira, HanzaShiro, ShiraBashi (Niibashi/Shirahama), Kuresawa/Yuki, Ogasawara/Eimi
Excerpt:
I held him around the shoulders as he coughed to the side, and then eased him back down. His eyes opened, and I was startled to see light colors reflecting the sunlight shining down around us.
His expression was dazed as he stared at me. "Beautiful..." His voice was hoarse from coughing, but the breathy compliment made something in me stir. By design, mermaids were all beautiful. We were meant to be. But something about the way this human said it felt... different.
His hand shakily reached up to run through my hair that formed a dark curtain around him. I watched as those eyes roved over me, and the burning gaze had my face heating up even more than it already was in this new heat.
I suppose since he was studying me, I'd study him. He was the first human I've ever seen, and he was as masculine as I read human males usually are. His orange hair glistened from the water still clinging to the wet strands, and along his normal-looking ears there were... piercings? Those looked painful, but I supposed humans must have a high pain tolerance.
"Am I dead?"
What a strange thing to ask, although, I suppose it wouldn't be so out of the blue since he almost drowned. I laughed, unable to form words yet with the salty air drying my throat out.
His eyes widened in wonder, and I offered a smile of reassurance, hoping he would realize he was in fact alive.
"Wait, you're a mermaid?!" He jolted up, nearly smacking our heads together in the process. The sudden movement made all my aches and pains resurface, and I panted as I held my side.
"You're hurt?" He was by my side instantly, looking at me with such tender worry that made my heart beat faster. A human that cares? Aren't they usually wary of merfolk?
My vision swam, and I tried to move back into the water but my strength left me. I fell to the sandy beach, my tail flopping around to try and cover me from the harsh sun.

Torii Gate on Reef Facing the Rising Sun
Location: Shirahama, Shimoda, Shizuoka, Japan Timestamp: 06:30 on January 3, 2024
Pentax K-1 II + DFA 28-105mm F3.5-5.6 28 mm ISO 100 for 0.5 sec. at ƒ/8.0
Located within a 3-hour drive of Tokyo, Shirahama Beach is a popular destination for beachgoers and surfers during the summer. While surfers are still present during the colder months, the beach is mostly empty, providing an opportunity to experience long stretches of sand free of human footprints.
At the northern end of the beach lies Daimyojin-Iwa (大明神岩), roughly translated to “rock of deity with extraordinary spiritual powers.” Atop Daimyoji Iwa stands a red torii gate facing the sea. The torii belongs to Ikona-hime-no-Mikotojinja Shrine, commonly known as Shirahama Shrine, the oldest Shinto shrine on the Izu Peninsula, and is only a 2-minute walk from the shoreline.
During midday, you can enjoy the lovely white sands and deep turquoise sea that stand in stark contrast with the red torii gate. If you visit early in the morning, however, you can experience beautiful skies and a sandy shore blanketed in a soft coral pink hue.
Google Maps links to this destination, and links to sources of additional reading can be found in the most recent pix4japan blog post: https://www.pix4japan.com/blog/20240103-shirahama

Episode 236: The Nanki-Shirahama Mystery Tour (Part 1)
Mouri, Ran, and Conan take a vacation to Nanki-Shirahama. It’s a really nice place, and a great majority of this episode is taken up with 'Travel to Japan' promotional videos of them walking around, seeing the sites, enjoying refreshments, and educating themselves at museums. Their relaxed vacation comes to an abrupt stop while they’re walking on the white sand beaches, and they meet 'medicine-art' students. There's Maki-san, who spends a thousand dollars on make-up a month. She has long red hair, purple lips and sunglasses, a mole, and a hat. Then there’s Madoka, the 'Madonna' of the group. She wants to collect some sand to bring home. There’s also Long Hair Snoot Face, who hates souvenirs, especially the one that Ran liked. Lastly there’s Computer Geek and Kanako, a woman with spiky brown hair who isn’t going to do favors for Maki anymore, even though she helped her through university math classes. They have this enormous argument right in front of Mouri within seconds of meeting him. Needless to say, Conan and his group vacate the premises as quickly as possible. However, Maki-san tracks them down later, as they’re watching the sunset, to encourage Mouri to go to a fish and drinking market in the morning, before he goes to Adventure Land. She takes the liberty to even provide precise instructions as to how to get there. Then she jumps in her car and zooms away. The next morning, they’re enjoying their day in the bright sunshine, when all of the sudden Conan goes into shock because he senses Anokata’s large blue eyes glaring at him from across the station. They continue on and go to a shop where Ran has to buy a smiley tomato, but Conan senses the eyes there too. Then they briefly see Maki-san, who bows to them before zooming off in her car again. Meanwhile, Conan chases Anokata who’s getting on a bus to Sandanbeki. They meet Computer Geek at Adventure Land after watching a walrus and orca show, where he gets a phone call from the Madonna, who tells him that Maki-san is dead with a knife in her chest. They tell her they’ll be there soon. Apparently she found the body because Maki’s cellphone was going off playing Beethoven, but she didn’t hear the murder taking place only moments before, because the waves were too loud. She also didn’t think to call the police or an ambulance after finding Maki-san because when they get there, she’s just sitting there, painting, a few meters from the body. When the police finally arrive, you meet two really nice detectives, who are thoroughly the most normal people in all of Detective Conan, and that includes the fact that one of them never opens his eyes.
