My toxic trait is if you’re a favorite character of mine, I will argue on the internet that you can win any fight. Like a girlfriend trying to start beef when a guy looks at me funny. “Babe I’m only 5’5–“ AND?? You’ve heard of the power of friendship, now hear the power of I’m rooting for you! You’re the underdog, babe! Plot armor! You got this!

My prediction for Taz Versus Dracula is that all of them are playing Sherlock Holmes including Dracula, that way there are Four Sherlock Holmes and a Vampire (Who Is Also one of the Aforementioned Sherlock Holmes)

Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One is a fun look at what a triple AAA take on Sherlock could be like. I'm also not that good at it so good thing this is a rookie tale.
I'll do you proud, Mister Holmes.
I wouldn't mind more expiremental Sherlock tales in the future.
PS. I'd buy Sherlock versus Dracula. ;)

For fun I decided to catalogue all of the books I own.
I own a lot of books.
More under the cut.
A caveat about this list:
Some of the books I own I find ideologically abhorrent. Specifically, I am referring to Atlas Shrugged, Ideal, and How to Destroy America in Three Easy Steps, written by Ayn Rand and Ben Shapiro, respectively. I own them so I can understand them, not because I enjoy them. The rest I find enjoyable, amusing, interesting, or else I am neutral towards them.
I hope you enjoy this list. If you have any questions about it, ask away.

VATICAN  CAMEOS
________________________________________________________________
Tumblr media
‘Vatican Cameos’ is a well known phrase in Sherlock BBC. It’ s Sherlock’s secret code word to warn against some imminent life-threatening danger. The code is used three times in total:
First by Sherlock in ASIB when he is about to open Irene’s safe where she keeps her camera phone, guarded by ‘explosives’.
Second by Sherlock in TSOT when he is about to connect the last dots regarding the Mayfly Man case, the invisible man with the invisible knife, and what this means for Major Sholto.
Third by John in TFP when he learns that Eurus is able to ‘reprogramme’ people. Sherlock doesn’t pay attention to him though. He has just played Irene’s theme on his violin and is about to touch the wall of glass which seperates him from Eurus.
The word ‘cameo’ has different meanings. It can be a piece of jewellery, like a gem or small medallion, often with a profiled head carved in stone or some other hard material. The word is also used for small literary or filmic pieces or small theatrical roles. It looks like both meanings - ‘carved in stone’ as well as ‘small guest appearance’ - could apply to the wording ‘Vatican Cameos’ in Sherlock BBC, in a metaphorical reading of the story.
TBC below the cut …
Two restaurants lit by fire and flame
Tumblr media
At Angelo’s  ...
In the unaired PILOT/ASIP, Sherlock and John wait at Angelo’s restaurant for serial killer Hope. It’s the first time both men work together on a case. From the fireless mantlepiece right next to their candlelit table, a silent watcher observes the beginning of their relationship. It’s the bust of a pope (x x).
ANGELO: Anything on the menu, whatever you want, free. All on the house, you and your date. …  Anything on the menu, I cook it for you myself.
A pope, head of the Vatican and supreme keeper of an unrelenting belief, is present at the first ‘date’ of two men, is forced to watch silently, how they fall in love with each other … while a living, breathing ‘angel’ isn’t only ready to serve them food and drink … no, the ‘angel’ even offers to cook the meal himself for free … everything they desire.
Tumblr media
The ‘angel’, literally, lights the fire between Sherlock and John with the remark, that this would be much more romantic for a first date. The whole scene seems to be drenched in a yellow light.
Maybe also worth noticing ... the bust of the pope has been put on the same place at the mantlepiece as the skull in 221b.
Tumblr media
At the Cross Keys Inn ...
Sherlock and John have rooms at the Cross Keys Inn near Baskerville. They meet in front of the blazing fireplace after Sherlock’s first encounter with the monstrous hound in Dewer’s Hollow. A heart adorns the mantlepiece right over the flickering flames.
Tumblr media
The owners of the Cross Keys Inn are Billy and Gary, a gay couple. They have a dog which they couldn’t bring themselves to put down. A sign with ‘vacancies’ written on it, is placed above the statue of a hound. In the pigeonholes beneath, some lovely old fashioned keys seem only to wait for their task to open doors into equally lovely rooms. Bottles of wine are placed at both sides of the keys, the hound and the sign.
Tumblr media
The name of the restaurant - Cross Keys - is a deliberate choice by the creators of this story (X) and it seems they really knew quite well what they were doing by choosing precisely this name. The image of two crossed keys features most prominently in the coat of arms of the Vatican, crowned by the papal tiara. This turns the Cross Keys Inn into another short ‘cameo appearance’ of the Vatican. The ‘crossed keys’ - the keys of heaven - have been given to a gay couple that provides food and drink and rooms for those, who want to fulfill those desires.
It isn’t new that these two characters are mirrors for Sherlock and John. (Follow the dog, Part 1 by @sagestreet ) Their names speak for themselves as well:
Billy is short for William, like William Sherlock Scott Holmes
Gary contains the germanic element ‘ger’ meaning ‘spear’
Tumblr media
The ‘crossed keys’ of the Vatican
The flag of the Vatican, the papal colours, are yellow and white. They mirror the colours of the keys. The silver key symbolizes the pope's earthly power and the gold one represents god's divine power. The mechanisms of the keys (the bit/beard that unlocks) is turned up towards heaven, their grips are facing downward to show that they were given into the hands of the pope by god.
In heraldry ...
gold (Or) is mostly depicted as yellow and linked to the sun and faith, representd by the topaz (aspects linked to John and his mirrors)
silver (Argent) is mostly depicted as white and linked to the moon and purity, represented by the pearl (aspects linked to Sherlock and his mirrors)
Tumblr media
The Vatican’s crossed keys represent the metaphorical keys of the office of Saint Peter, also known as the ‘keys of heaven’. They are the symbol of papal authority. Peter recived the keys and alongside with them, the power of binding and loosing was also commited to him.  (Sources: X X )
“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven,”  (Matthew 16:19:)
“What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder”
Tumblr media
This phrase is very well known from wedding ceremonies. Marriage, also called ‘the holy matrimony’, is one of the seven sacraments in catholic church. It is a convenant by which two people establish between themselves a partnership of the whole life. And to this day, the Vatican decides which type of partnership is legal and blessed and which one is a sin and damned. A view, carved in stone and unchangeble, it seems.
Faith, Hope and Love
Those three aspects, closely related to deep emotions, are also known as the three theological virtues. In christianity they are associated with the ‘salvation resulting from the grace of god’ (x).
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.
So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13)
The three virtues - hope, faith and love - are also an important part of the rosary prayer. The first three Hail Mary’s at the beginning of the litany are dedicated to them by ending each one of the verses with … ‘and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus, …
... who increases faith in us.’
... who strengthens hope in us.’
... who ignites love in us.’
The creators of Sherlock BBC took a rather special and original way to include those three virtues and Mary’s pregnancy into their story.
HOPE - is the name of the serial killer in ASIP, who offers two sorts of pills (chemistry), a good one and a bad one. One of his victims is the pink lady who had once been in ‘good hope’. But then her daughter Rachel was stillborn. Rachel is the code word to track down Hope.
FAITH - is the name of the serial killer’s daughter in TLD (who’s also linked to chemistry). She appears in two different versions, both presented as mirrors for John. It turns out that in one of the two versions she is Eurus in disguise ... the ‘other one’ ... Sherlock’s long locked- up emotinal part.
LOVE - is used in its Latin translation ‘AMO’ (I love) as code name for the person who is Mycroft’s - the brains - superior. This code word is also used by a second person, Vivian Norbury, to influence the Tiblisi hostage incident - the ultimate cause for the ‘death’ of Rosamunnd Mary and the eventual ‘birth’ of Mary Morstan, which will leads to the birth of baby Rosamund Mary.
Three different stories and yet, each one is about ‘TWO’ (even ‘I love’ appears as AMO & AMMO) and the concepts of choice, death and rebirth. All of it linked to the love story of two men.
Tumblr media
The yellow thread
The colour yellow runs through the story told in Sherlock BBC, from the first series to the (by now) last:
This thread starts with Sherlock’s and John’s first ‘date’ at Angelo’s. The whole scene is drenched in yellow.
A secret code of ancient cyphers, sprayed in yellow paint, leads to the Yellow Dragon Circus.
Golden cats and big ‘yellow’ felines - lions - roam the story.
Yellow is the colour of the smiley face on the wall of the 221b living room.
There’s an assassin who carries a yellow ladder and a yellow tool case with a gun in it.
A bright yellow mask has been placed inside a box, alongside with a train, a phone, nicotin patches and a note.
The main colour of the wedding ... so much yellow. It’s the wedding that leads Sherlock to a revolutionary revelation and to a love deduction.
A canary trainer, a trainer of yellow birds, turns out to be the killer.
The Norbury case from canon, known as the case of the ‘yellow face’, plays a vital role in an episode.
The finish of a race is marked with a bright yellow band that floats slowly to the ground while a serial killer passes as winner.
Yellow is the colour of the sun, of fire and flames.
Yellowbeard ….
Yellow and white, gold and silver - are the colours of the Vatican. Colours that represent unchangeable tradition, stubborn persistance and inflexibility. Sherlock BBC links those colours stongly to John and Sherlock. The conductor of light, the fierce lion on the one hand and and the man in the moon, the virgin in the white sheet on the other hand.
A pope, carved in stone, is forced to witness how two men fall in love. The crossed keys of heaven are given into the hands of a loving gay couple. The christian virtues of hope, faith and love become a core element in that story of change and rebirth. What might the colour yellow stand for in Sherlock BBC?
What if it becomes the colour of victory for a much too long forbidden love?
Tumblr media
Speculative addition:  nuns versus Dracula
In case Dracula BBC is somehow related to Sherlock BBC, which role might have been given to the nuns? As catholic nuns, will they turn out to be  another ‘vatican cameo’? After all, nuns do have great significance in Sherlock BBC since the beginning. There are the ‘headless nuns’ from PILOT and TSOT and furthermore, sister is just another word for nun. I’ve tried to follow the trail of those nuns/sisers in ‘The Roads we walk have demons beneath’.
Tumblr media
Inspired by the comments on this post some time ago and the last bit by the new trailer for Dracula BBC.  I leave you to your own deductions.

Christopher Lee: King of the Badass Old Man Fight
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before moving on to the next AFI movie, I noticed in my previous review I neglected to mention the most badass old man wizard fight ever caught on tape: Christopher Lee as Saruman vs. Ian McKellen as Gandalf having a knock down wizard fight. While watching, it occurred to me that Lee also played Count Dooku in the Star Wars Prequels and that this actor was a constant bad ass for his entire film career. I took a scan through IMDB and here is how awesome Christopher Lee was:
-He was a British Airforce Pilot during WW2. Nothing to do with his film career, but yet another reason he was a badass. Thank you for your service.
-The man was in movies spanning seven decades from the 50s to the 2010s with 282 acting credits. He has the most acting credits of any member of the Screen Actor’s Guild and holds the Guinness World Record for this feat.
-He played some of the most iconic film bad guys including Dracula, Dr Fu Manchu, The Man with the Golden Gun, Lord Summerisle from The Wicker Man, Sherlock Holmes (not a bad guy), Death, Count Dooku, and Saruman. He has played the villain that we secretly root for for over half a century.
-At 78, he had a 3 minute drag out fight scene that pitted Gandalf versus Saruman in LOTR and it was amazing. Check out this vicious fight between actors in their 70s.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cgz6HKEGkI
-That was the most amazing fight between wily oldy characters until the next year when Lee was 79 and his character of Count Dooku took on the great Jedi Yoda. It was a lot more elegant sword play with CG all over the place, but it was still pretty amazing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UUQIIOO8RM
The man was appropriately knighted for all his work (although he was never nominated for an Academy Award) and continued acting until a couple of months before he passed away in 2015. I hope to be even 1% as cool as this man before I die, and the least I can do is admire his work. RIP Sir Christopher Lee.

Dracula films
A few years ago I tried to purchase a used copy of Dark Prince: The True Story of Dracula on Amazon.  The person sent me Bram Stoker’s Dracula.  When I contacted the seller to tell them of their mistake they replied with an apology and stating “I didn’t realize there was more than one Dracula movie.”   I can’t quite fathom how someone in this day and age could actually believe that.   Dracula has been in more films than any other monster. (Trivia: the first horror movie monster is the demon Mephistopheles AKA Mephisto who came from the German legend of Faust. Whose first cinematic appearance was in 1897.)
Currently Dracula and Sherlock Holmes share the slot for fictional characters with the most film and TV incarnations.  It’s neck and neck (if you pardon the accidental pun there).
Here are all the Dracula films I can think of off the top of my head WITHOUT checking the Internet Movie database.
Films either featuring (or directly about) Dracula.
Keep in mind there are many Dracula films I have not seen.  These are just the ones I, myself, know.  I put a * next to ones that are actually a singular Dracula film franchise.
List of Dracula films under this cut.
Tumblr media
*Dracula (1931) Dracula’s Daughter Son of Dracula  House of Frankenstein House of Dracula Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein  Blood for Dracula Blood of Dracula’s Castle The Return of Dracula Revenge of Dracula  *Horror of Dracula AKA Dracula (1958) Brides of Dracula Dracula: Prince of Darkness Dracula has risen from the grave Taste the Blood of Dracula  Scars of Dracula Dracula 1972 AD Satanic Rites of Dracula (Dracula and his vampire Bride) The Seven Golden Vampires Count Dracula (1970) Dracula and Son  In search of Dracula (version with Christopher Lee) The Magic Christian (Brief appearance) *Blackula Scream Blackula Scream Dracula’s Dog Mad Monster Party? ________________________________
Bonus: TV shows featuring Dracula: The Drac Pack AKA Drak Pack Sabrina and the Groovy Ghoulies Monster Force  Monster Squad (not the same as the movie) Captain N: The Game Master  Buffy The Vampire Slayer (One episode and Season 8 motion comic.) Dracula: The Series (1990s version. Dracula uses the name Alexander Lucard.) Dracula (NBC series, 2013.  Dracula uses the name Alexander Grayson.) The Electric Company (recurring character) Little Dracula  Mina and The Count  The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy (recurring character.) Young Dracula Monster High (Repeated appearances and mentions) Penny Dreadful Hotel Transylvania (the animated series) Hellsing Hellsing Ultimate OVA Castlevania _________________
TV and film characters that are not quite Dacula but clearly inspired by Dracula. Semi-Dracula:
TV: The Munsters (features Sam Dracula) Bunnicula Duckula  Sesame Street (Count von Count) BeetleBorgs (Count Fangula) Count Chocula (Cereal mascot)
Movie: Countess Dracula What we do in The Shadows (Vlad the Poker possibly is Dracula)  Fright Night (1985 version. The novelization indicates Jerry is Dracula) Fright Night: Part 2 (same reason as above)  House of Frankenstein 1997 (not called Dracula but it was Dracula in original) Bunnicula (TV movie) Munster, Go Home Mockingbird Lane Vampire Hunter D  Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust   The Return of Count Spirochete (educational)
Trivia:  Dracula’s age in film and TV often varies.  Dracula (in the novel) could change his age at will but at average his youngest form is usually age forty five or forty six as that was the age Vlad the Impaler (Vladislaus Drakulya) was when he died / would have become a vampire as most depictions use the Vlad the Impaler origin).  The old-man-form can look anywhere between seventies to nineties.
As you can see though, this is why I find it so hard to fathom someone not knowing there are many Dracula movies.  And these are just the ones that I, personally, know of.

Listening to the audio book version of The Hound of the Baskervilles again on the audible app. Book adapted by Richard Dinnick.
I was glad that the author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle mentioned Stapleton showed toxic positivity, by saying Stapleton was positive but harsh, ignoring and minimising people’s distress. This contrasts with Doctor Watson’s healthy positivity, empathy and compassion.
I was impressed that some of the voice actors voiced two to three characters! I wasn’t sure if this was the case until the voice actors confirmed this in interviews at the end of the audio book. The female voice actress Charlie Norfolk voiced Beryl Stapleton, Laura Lyons and Mrs Barrymore. She has a lovely and eloquent voice.
There’s an actual audio book called Sherlock Holmes versus Dracula. Which sounds hilarious. Make of that what you will. 😆
Holmes’ voice actor sounds rather flirtatious and cheeky when he tells Watson to be careful with the revolver. 😆
I thought it was hilarious and interesting that by 19th century standards that the antagonist Mr Stapleton was considered a daring and exciting person while he was jumping and trying to catch a butterfly in his net. Okay, to be fair - he was trying to catch a butterfly near a dangerous swamp. That was pretty daring.
Animal science can be exciting, but catching a butterfly in a net is not my idea of an exciting time. Also, it was interesting that being a naturalist scientist made him a jock in the 19th century! Stapleton would probably still be considered daring and physically active in the 21st century, but seen as a boffin (geek), not a jock, given his job and hobbies. He’d be considered evil and violent anyway regardless of time period.
I know there are plenty of naturalist scientists that are good people in real life, so Stapleton is not a very positive representation of people in those jobs unfortunately.
The music and sound effects (poured tea, crackling fire, horses’ hooves, carriage wheels, steam train sounds, walking, turning newspaper pages) were terrific and made the story more exciting. 🙂👍 It made me feel as if I was present with the characters and listening to a movie.
The book is shortened (abridged). But books with the best voice actors, music and sound effects usually are shorter than the actual book, to save time and money.
I definitely recommend listening to this audio book. This is my honest opinion and I’m not being paid to review the book.

HMB: Victor Frankenstein
Original Publishing Date: July 22nd, 2016
Now for the other half of this THMB double feature, let's talk about Victor Frankenstein. When I first saw the trailer of this movie, I thought this was going ti be the next installment of the Universal Monster universe, you know, the one Dracula Untold was suppose to spin off. I don't know if they are still going to do that, but watching this movie made me want that to happen. Victor Frankenstein is about the famed scientist, not monster, and how he met his assistant Igor (or Ygor, whatever works for you), and the rise to creating the Frankenstein Monster. Most Frankenstein films don't cover this part of the story because people are only interested in the monster, not the man. This film wanted to change that and make Victor the star again. And in my opinion, they succeed... Kind of. Victor is a very interesting character in this movie. You get the sense of madness it would take to do something like rob graves and create zombies out of lightning, but that madness is leveled by a passion of science and a good heart, making him a character we follow and admire but one that creates an internal conflict. But my main problem with the character is that they were going for an emotional side to his passion, and I don't think it worked. Victor lost his brother Henry and that's why he has a strife to bring people back to life. That can be a very heavy and emotional motivation, but its mostly glanced over until the end of the movie. They did a good job handling the other parts of Victor's personality in the movie, they could have balanced this emotional drama too. And we also have Igor, the famed hunchback assistant of Frankenstein. In this movie he's only a hunchback for the first ten minutes and then Frankenstein cures him. At first I was a little bummed because I like the idea of a hunchback assistant, that's a staple of these kinds of movies, but at the same time, it's a reimagining. It needs to take old elements, question them, and throw them into a new light. Plus, Daniel Radcliffe probably wouldn't want to do an entire movie bent over (until Swiss Army Man! OOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!). So Igor is the rational mind to Victor's insanity, the straight man if you will. He was a circus freak who was discovered by Victor, who helped break Igor out of the circus, making them both criminals. There's not much else I can say about the character except for the fact he and Victor's relationship, which is suppose to be a friendship of admiration, at times felt more homosexual. Seeing how Victor was never given a love interest in this movie, I thought that was what they were going for, or at least hinted. That Frankenstein was gay. They never debunked that, but they never confirmed it either. Either way, I'd be fine with the decision, but having a homosexual Frankenstein would be a fascinating story to watch. Now let's talk about the things I hated in this movie. The detective character I hated. Large portions of the movie was given to this cookie cutter Christian character. He sees Dr. Frankenstein's experiments as Satan's work, and he anti-science, and thinks its his holy duty to stop him. On the one hand, this makes sense and could work narratively. A voice that oppose Frankenstein's ideas. Every Frankenstein movie has that one character that tells Frankenstein not to play God, and brings the question if whether this is moral or not, and whether he should. But in here, it just feels like an easy way to create an antagonist. The big bad police going after Frankenstein. Which is weird, because by the end of the movie, the role of antagonist was switched to the wealthy investor of Frankenstein. I can't remember his motivation, but I think it has to do with creating a Frankenstein Monster Army. It comes out of nowhere and feels forced into the script. I think the reason these character felt so flat and boring to me is because I'm use to the villain being the monster. Yes, I know the movie isn't about the monster, but source of the conflict from the book was Frankenstein versus his creation. It was far more interesting than a bible humping detective and a snobby millionaire. But to end this blog, I want to go back to what I was saying about a cinematic Universal monster universe. If there ever was going to be one, I want it to be set in this universe. A universe where the characters are allowed to have personality, where the audience needs to be patient in order to get the things they want, and expand the ideas conveyed in this movie. And you know what I was thinking while watching this movie? The dectective should have been Sherlock Holmes. How awesome would that have been? Distracting? Yes, but it could set up a Sherlock Holmes universe next to the monster one. Maybe it wouldn't be a "Universal" cinematic universe, maybe just one inspired by gothic literature of the late 1800's and early 1900's. Even though this movie didn't do that well nor did it get great reviews, it made the idea of something like this plausible. The person who wrote this script is Max Landis, you might know him from his online presence or his other films. I think he did a great job with the script, despite some holes in the story. If there was ever a monster universe, I hope he could get the chance to write it. I want to see more characters like this, characters with personality that makes you want to follow them to the end of the earth.

What is crossover fiction?
“Crossover fiction” is when a story is told involving two or more characters from different settings or universes. It’s a fairly common trope. Some famous examples are:
King Kong vs Godzilla
Freddy vs Jason vs Ash
Aliens v. Predator
Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue
Frank Miller and Walt Simonson’s Robocop versus Terminator
Archie vs Punisher
Alan Moore’s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen*
PJ Farmer’s the Wold Newton universe/family**
Kim Newman’s Anno Dracula***
X-Men and Star Trek: TNG in the novel Planet X
Neil Gaiman’s A Study in Emerald****
The X-Files on the Simpsons
The many, many implications of Tommy Westphall*****
Then there is the character that embodies the crossover: Detective John Munch, played by Richard Belzer. He has appeared on Law & Order, L&O: SVU, L&O: Criminal Intent, L&O: Trial by Jury, L&O: LA, New York Undercover, X-Files, the Wire, the Beat, 30 Rock, Arrested Development, Conviction, Homocide: Life on the Streets, and Luther.
That’s crossover fiction; seeing what happens when you introduce characters and settings to each other that normally would never interact. And that’s what I wanted to make: the world’s largest story.
So, let’s see where this adventure takes us. And who we meet along the way.
* Let’s just ignore the film adaptation and instead talk about the comic, which was by Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a series (told over three volumes, a graphic novel, and three-part spin-off) that runs from 1898 Victorian England until the modern day, featuring characters from a wide-array of fiction: from Sherlock Holmes to Harry Potter.
** On December 13, 1795 a meteorite hit near Wold Newton, Yorkshire. Philip Jose Farmer uses that as the basis for a story, saying the meteorite caused genetic mutations in people passing by it. The people who were affected and their descendants were endowed with extremely high intelligence and strength, as well as an exceptional capacity and drive to perform good or, as the case may be, evil deeds. Farmer would feature stories with Tarzan, Doc Savage, Lord Peter Wimsey, Scarlet Pimpernel, Professor Moriarty, James Bond, the Shadow, and many others.
*** Newman was inspired by Farmer’s Wold Newton concept, which he applied to Dracula.
**** Neil Gaiman, who helped Newman develop the Anno Dracula series (and allegedly almost helped co-write it), did a crossover of Sherlock and H. P. Lovecraft.
***** Tommy Westphall was a character on the show St. Elsewhere who was diagnosed with autism. At the end of the run of St. Elsewhere, the show was revealed to (possibly) all be Tommy’s daydream. As some of the characters of St. Elsewhere appeared on other shows, this led comic book legend to Dwayne McDuffie to jokingly point out that something like 80% of TV was set in the same universe, which ALL happened to be in Tommy’s imagination.

SCANDINAVIAN  REFERENCES
________________________________________________________________
In Sherlock BBC - and also a little bit outside of it
While writing on DISTRACTION & CONSEQUENCES and CABIN ON THE MEADOW, involving Phil with his ‘explosive’ car and the Hiker with the bashed-in head, I couldn’t fail to notice that Phil’s unmoving car is a SAAB … which is a Swedish brand.
Tumblr media
According to the informations given during the promotion campaingn for the Escapre Room, TheGameIsNow, Sherlock lives currently in Sweden. Since these aren’t the only occasions where Scandinavian regions are mentioned in Sherlock BBC, the suspicion inevitably arose that those references could be of some importance. Reason enough to make another little list. :)
TBC below the cut ….
Short definition of Scandinavia
The term Scandinavia in local usage covers the three kingdoms of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.
In English usage, Scandinavia also sometimes refers to the Scandinavian Peninsula, or to the broader region including Finland and Iceland.  x
A Scandal in Belgravia
As mentioned above, Phil’s immobile car, which ‘explodes’ and thus distracts the Hiker who, as a consequence, is killed by his own boomerang, is of the Swedish brand SAAB.
Tumblr media
The Empty Hearse
Mr. Howard Shilcott, the ‘train guy (and mirror for Sherlock), possesses important informations about the Underground station at Sumatra Road, which once was built but then closed before it ever opened. He wears a ‘funny hat with earflaps’ made of Islandic sheep wool. That hat becomes an object of significance when Sherlock invites his brother to play deductions with him, just like in the old days.
MYCROFT: The earlier patches are extensively sun-bleached, so he’s worn it abroad – in Peru. SHERLOCK: Peru? MYCROFT: This is a chullo – the classic headgear of the Andes. It’s made of alpaca. SHERLOCK: No. MYCROFT: No? SHERLOCK: Icelandic sheep wool. Similar, but very distinctive if you know what you’re looking for. I’ve written a blog on the varying tensile strengths of different natural fibres.
Tumblr media
His Last Vow
The main villain of this episode is designed after Doyle’s British character Charles Augustus Milverton. For some reason, in this adaptation, name and origin of the man have been changed into Charles Augustus Magnussen, who is now from Denmark. The fact that he is ‘foreign’ is driven home explicitly right at the beginning of the episode by the dialogue as well as the accent of the man, who is played by Danish actor Lars Mikkelsen.
GARVIE: Do you think it right that a newspaper proprietor, a private individual and, in fact, a foreign national should have such regular access to our Prime Minister? MAGNUSSEN: I don’t think it’s wrong that a private individual should accept an invitation. However, you have my sincere apologies for being foreign.
Tumblr media
The Six Thatchers
Mr. Kingsley, a client, thinks that Sherlock’s deductions, once explained, are actually dead simple. Highly annoyed, Sherlock spontaneously invents a ludicrous story and tells the shocked man that his wife is actually Greta Bengtsdotter, Swedish by birth and the most dangerous spy in the world. She secretly works for none other than James Moriarty and uses her unsuspecting husband as cover to hide her true intentions which will finally precipitate in World War III.
Tumblr media
The first location Mary visits on her hiatus is Norddal in Norway. That’s a small place (ca. 1660 inhabitants) deep inside the Storfjord. Here she picks up a fake passport hidden inside the stonewall of a coastal watchtower. Her new name, Gabrielle Ashdown, is taken from TPLOSH, where Holmes chooses the pseudonym ‘Mr. and Mrs. Ashdown’ for himself and Gabrielle Valladon, the woman who consulted him in the case of her missing husband but is actually Ilse von Hofmannsthal, a German spy who pretends to be Mrs. Valladon.
Tumblr media
The Final Problem
One of the very last scenes of this episode shows a man dressed as Viking, including the (cliched) horned helmet. He lies motionless on the floor in the livingroom of 221b Baker Street (played by Paul Weller). John bends over him and examines his left eye.
Vikings were highly skilled Norse seafarers who raided and pillaged (like pirates) with their infamous longboats (also well known as dragonboats). They acted as mercenaries but also as merchants, who traded goods across wide areas of Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, European Russia and the North Atlantic islands. Some of them even reached the North-Eastern coast of North America. (X)
Tumblr media
That Viking is not the only character in this story who ‘wears horns’. Furthermore, cow horns are also connected to the eye-goddess Hathor, whose other, dangerous side is represented by lioness goddess Sekhmet.
Tumblr media
The way this Viking lays there … one leg sharply angled at the knee, the foot shoved beneath the other, outstretched leg and both arms straight beside his torso … it’s a bit odd and strangely reminds me of the ‘dancing men’ drawn on the blackboard in the shot displayed immediately before this one. It almost looks like the way this man lies there could have some meaning.
Tumblr media
And something else comes to mind: the way John bends over the Viking stunningly resembles the scene from Magnussen’s office in HLV, when Sherlock got shot by Mary. One could even say, there are three potential ‘pirates’ gathered in Magnusson’s bedroom in that scene ... Sherlock, John and ‘Viking descendent’ Magnussen. Interesting ...
Tumblr media
The Game is Now - Escape Room Promotion
With the cliffhanger of The Final Problem in mind and still no official announcement regarding a fifth series on the horizon, one could come to the assumption that the ‘TheGameIsNow- EscapeRoom’ event serves as a sort of interlude and somehow resembles a ‘SherlockBBC-Hiatus’ (hopefully). Isn’t it interesting that here too, Scandinavia seems to play a role?
During the conversation with Mycroft, in the intercepted message Nr 1, Sherlock mentions that he currently is in Sweden.
During the intercepted message Nr 2 a map of Scandinavia is shown in the background with informations regarding its natural recources: iron ore, copper, zinc, gold, IKEA and uranium.
Additionally Mycroft confirms a second time where his brother might be found at the moment: ‘Missing, rumoured to be in Sweden’ is written below a picture of Sherlock, kept in black and white, but temporarily overlaid with pink and green  (Study in Pink and Green)
Tumblr media
Scandinavian canon reference regarding the ‘hiatus’
In Doyle’s original story The Empty House, Sherlock Holmes tells Dr. Watson after their reunion that, for some time during his hiatus, he had stayed in Norway under a fake identity.
“You may have read of the remarkable explorations of a Norwegian named Sigerson, but I am sure that it never occurred to you that you were receiving news of your friend.” (ACD, The Empty House)
Using Sherlock’s own words from The Great Game, one could say that, by now, the story told in Sherlock BBC as well as the EscapeRoom event have a …  ‘distinctly Scandinavian feeling about it’.  :)
Tumblr media
Some Scandinavian side notes outside Sherlock BBC
Not Sherlock related. Should be taken with caution and humor:
Radio Times, November 2018:  Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss reveale that Danish actor Claes Bang will be playing Dracula in their new series. ‘Hell has a new boss’ says the headline. Strictly speaking, the boss in Hell is generally considered to be the Devil (maybe also his grandma :) but surely not Dracula, who is after all just a human who desired immortal strength to protect and revenge the ones whom he loved. At least, that’s the story told in ….
Dracula Untold  (2014) -  some quotes:
"One day I will call on you to serve me in an immortal game of revenge … to unleash my wrath against the one who betrayed me."
“This is not a game!”
"Oh, what better way to endure eternity. For this, is the ultimate game. Light versus dark, hope versus despair. And all the world's fate hangs into the balance."
Vlad Dracula meets his creator         Let the games begin

“You want me to shake hands with you in Hell? I shall not disappoint you.“  (Sherlock at Jim Moriarty, TRF)
How Dracula BBC came into being
“It came about several years ago,” Gatiss said. “We were filming  — we’d just started the third series of Sherlock, where he comes back from the dead, and we had to break off after two days to go to the RTS Awards (March, 2013) and I had a picture on my phone of Benedict silhouetted against the door of Mrs Hudson’s room. I showed it to Ben Stephenson, who was then the Head of Drama [at the BBC], and I said, ‘Looks like Dracula’. And he said, ‘Do you want to do it?'”  (RadioTimes, April 2019)

“We’re gonna go all Dane“
The same article from RadioTimes, contains an interview with Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. When asked about their upcomming mini-series ‘Dracula’, if there will be more ‘homegrown talents’ among the cast, the producers answered the question in their most familiar way - with lots of laughter and giggling - obviously taking much pleasure in the announcement of their new ‘informations’.

“No, no ..., it’s strictly Dane from now on. We're only casting over Denmark. I don’t think Denmark’s being sufficiently represented and so we’re gonna go all Dane.”
Strictly Danes …. well, well …. I’m more curious than ever ... and extremely exited!  :))))
On Scandinavian name-giving tradition
It is a well known custom in Scandinavian regions to create personal names based on the given name of one’s father, grandfather or male ancestor by adding the ending -son/-sen/-søn or -dotter/-dottir/-dattir. This is called a patronymic (while the same method based on the mother’s name is called matronymic). A good example for this in Sherlock BBC is the character Charles Augustus Magnussen …. Magnus-sen = son of Magnus.
This kind of Scandinavian name-giving tradition is based entirely on first names. Just assuming though, this method would also be applied to last names, then ... a female descendent of someone with the family name ‘Bang’ could be named ... ‘Bangsdotter’. :)))
A last funny detail:  the subtitles for Sherlock BBC, Series 4 (British Edition), display the name of the famous Swedish spy, Sherlock invents in TST, as Greta Bengsdotter. The correct spelling of the first name of Greta’s father (used here as patronymic) isn’t Beng though …. but Bengt.
Bengt (female, Bengta) is the Swedish equivalent of … Benedict.   :)))

As I said above ... to be taken with caution and humor.  :)))))
