What I Read This Week: March 17th
Hey! Here is this week's installment of what I've been reading! I focused on some bigger pieces this week so it's really not as many as usual!
Come Over (Again)- Au of the Au by @punk-gremlin- Shayne/Ian - I re-read this so I could leave a comment because I hadn't before. This is an AU of Jace's fic Come Over (Again) wherein Ian is a trans man and has a three year old daughter with Anthony and in this AU he also gets pregnant by Shayne. You don't necessarily have to read Come Over (Again) to understand this fic, but it certainly helps! I love how Jace writes issues of gender and pregnancy so big fave for me!
I'm Here by @wtfissgoingonn Ian/Anthony- but reads mainly platonic with some underlying feelings going on. This is a beautiful and quiet look at Ian and his feelings revolving around Anthony as well as a look at anxiety and comfort coming from having his best friend. So sweet and soft and cuuuuute.
I Think Last Night I May Have Bit Off More Than I Can Chew by @punk-gremlin - Ian/Anthony - ianthony - a chaptered fic where Ian is a trans man and he and Anthony are FWBs as teenagers when Ian becomes pregnant and gives birth to their son Hunter. This is an excellent study of family dynamics, angst, love, parenting, and Hunter is so well fleshed out and feels like a real person! 30 chapters (as of posting this but it is not finished) but it is worth it and Jace writes his chapters in manageable sizes so it doesn't feel overly long and makes you want to click that next chapter button!
Anthony's body by @hecoxthirst - Ian/Anthony - ianthony - A Jennifer's Body AU! Such a good idea and I've never seen the movie so this fic was my exposure to it. It captures the spirit of the film but also incorporates the accurate characterization of Ian and Anthony. Very cool concept and very well executed! It is gory just so you know!
This Isn't A Fanmeet by SingTidecaller- Gen - This is a horror themed fic that is violent but not tagged for character death so I assume that as of writing no one has/will die? But the Smosh crew wakes up involved in an alien death game. There is humor in this fic and it is very well written and a very interesting plot! Three chapters as of this posting.
forgive my lying eyes by @tommybowefuneralattendee - Shayne/Spencer - shayncer - very interesting fic where Shayne and Spencer are FWBs. There are misunderstandings and miscommunications, but the dialogue feels very real and the spicy scenes are also realistic and very sensual!

Writing trope bingo (Mysteries of the mortal God Edition)
Thanks to @illarian-rambling for the tag! These are always fun.
I confess to not knowing how to play bingo, but this seems straightforward enough.
Children of the Stars is in Blue, Echoes of Shadows in purple, and Tempest Prince in Red. Marking my commentary the same way
Sort of steampunk, I mean the world of Alteth is closer to our 1910's and 1920's, and only the hunter cities are really steampunk
I mean they're written by me, of course every character will have lethal amounts of sarcasm
Magic guns? Magic guns! Alex Haliday and his witchpowder repeater finally get a spotlight!
Yasha, Lyanni, and Helga are just pissed with good reason right out the gate.
Good god, the worldbuilding for this universe, might legit pull an H.P. Lovecraft and make it so that anyone can write fictions in it 'cause I will in no reasonable lifespan manage to use all of it
Okay so I was gonna leave this open but then I remembered that I do have a fantasy France in the background and it's called Lenroux.
Shayne appears for like one scene but he checks the southern accent scientist box so well
See, I would agree that it's just a smidge, but it's a pretty big smidge considering both plots revolve around the effects of eldritch gods.
It's more of a shared multiverse that occasionally decides to bleed together for a scene that doesn't make sense unless you've seen the same POV from the other, unrelated story. But overall, the same major gods watch over all three universes (mostly having given up Adrian and Lyanni's for a lost cause and are watching Jason, Alex, and Helga's with intent) and little elements bleed over from one universe to the next. Also Adrian, Johan, and Jason (essentially two mages and a cyborg) canonically met and tried to kick the crap out of eachother when the borders between worlds got especially thin, and there's a different POV of it in each WIP.
I've only really have all the tropes figured out for one of mine so here, have one for Children of the stars:

im a HUGE tv show guy so this is a tough one. but, funny enough, i've started playing this game (the one where one person guesses everyone's fave things) with my friends so i have my answer two-fold!
my fave shows are supernatural, hunter x hunter, and death note. i am so serious rn. these are embarrassing and yet! true!
and some other special shoutouts go to: teen wolf, arrested development, phineas and ferb, assassination classroom, total drama island, glee (i know i know im sorry), girl meets world, and ghost whisperer. like i've said. im so for real on all of this.
my best friend has in fact guessed me from these and i've got a hxh tattoo so! im pretty easy tbh

This is a regular no high-stakes teen drama IF BUT which teen drama live-action tv show of any genres would the ROs fit and thrive in? Riverdale, Euphoria, Glee, Sabrina, Gossip Girl, Teen Wolf, etc.?
I can't really see Dylan in a supernatural based show, mainly because they're mostly about drama between a friend group and all the betrayals but... Dylan is too much of a people's person to do well in that kind of environment... I could see them being an outlier in drama shows like Gossip Girl or Pretty Little Liars but they wouldn't exactly ✨thrive✨, ygm? Somehow I feel like the show I'd put them in is actually a supernatural show, Wynonna Earp──where they'd be an Earp sibling and a very good glue to keep the whole group together. (Plus WE's protags are all human and are accepting of LGBTQ+ so Dyl would fit in very well!) Though I'd like to see them in a straight up horror like I Know What You Did Last Summer or One Of Us Is Lying!
Shay is 100% Stiles Stilinski coded from Teen Wolf. I don't know why I get werewolf show vibes from Shayne... but I do! So Teen Wolf or Wolf Pack, Wolfblood and Bitten... but he's the only human in the supernatural pool! I could also see his on a more mature show like Grimm where he'd be like a more upbeat Trubel learning how to be a good Grimm and protect the good Wesen...
I feel like Kinsley would do well in drama based shows like Gossip Girl, Elites or Euphoria where it's more about interpersonal relationships and secrets. Though I could see her in other shows like Glee (where she learns how to be comfortable in herself à la Stantana) or The Vampire Diaries (Kinsley is very much like Caroline, actually, and I think becoming a vampire would actually do wonders for her character arc quicker than anything else!)
Maybe unsurprisingly, J would do well in shows like Deadly Class, The Society, The Order or Misfits both aesthetically and personality wise──being more intense than other shows/people (see: Shay&Teen Wolf or Teenage Bounty Hunters) with a complicated plot/magic system/storyline. And J's not afraid of a fight. That being said I think J could bring something to ridiculous shows like Riverdale or CAOS that would ground them a little (a 'what the fuck' kind of personality) but mainly I'd just want to see what fuckery J comes up with during the pain that are those shows. Lmao!
Put Theo in a thriller I just wanna see how they react lmao. I wanna see them in Yellowjackets or The Wilds or Alice in Borderland... they're actually quite smart when things don't center around reading so I feel like their solutions to situations would be super interesting to see! Though, to not traumatise them (lmao) I'd also put Theo in shows like Locke and Key, First Kill or Lockwood and Co!
As an ensemble I could see all of them in shows like Outerbanks, Surviving Summer, Heartbreak High, Sex Education or SKAM... or more supernatural shows like Paper Girls, Motherland: Fort Salem or Wednesday... I'd like to see what kind of supernatural being they'd end up being!

Chapter 1
"Sophia's claim to her true blood status comes from the Sorensen line, the one that everyone believes is the ancestor of Sigurd. But this book is saying that the true spelling is Sorenson, not Sorensen." Hunter pointed to the letters to show me the difference.
Avery slurped noisily at the last of his coffee, only glancing uneasily at Hunter's hand over mine. "That means she's a fake. She must've found a way to change the official records somehow. Everyone believes it, even the Queen."
You’re telling me that all of this comes down to a fucking clerical error? JFC how goddamned stupid can all of this possibly get?
"I think we have some very important work in Mongolia. Shoveling dragon manure, for instance."
Since they’re all dragons, wouldn’t that be the equivalent of shovelling human poop?
I twirled my hair around my finger and considered the risk of calling Shayne. I had no doubt that Garrett was watching my parents [sic] and my account.
[...]
"I can't take your money; I have my own. I just need to access it somehow."
Here’s a hint: stop hiding behind the dragons and their problem, go home, and fucking deal with Garrett.
"Where William and Emma were. About their family, that they had dragon babies. The document was dated right before she formed our team. She made it seem like we were going to save the world. We were going to have babies and grow the race. All along she knew that wolves could save the dragons. But they hate the wolves, so they buried the information."
Imagine going extinct because you hated some other race more than you wanted your own race to continue.
JFC, I say let these assholes go extinct. The phrase “too stupid to be alive” comes to mind.
Smirking, I shook my head. "You wish." I caught his smile just before I shut the door.
Chapter 1 summary: We open on one of the boys (I have given up giving a shit about which one is which) finding something important in a file. Then the rest of the boys come into Andre’s office and get angry that the first one had sex with Liz. They start to fight, and then Liz gets angry at them and starts throwing office supplies at their heads for them to stop.
They then go to a nearby cafe, where the one guy explains that he finally has dirt on Sophia. This entire time, her power has come because people believe that she’s from an important dragon family. But as it turns out, she’s somehow changed the records… Granted, it’s literally a one-letter change, but still.
Sophia and Andre come in. Sophia is still angry that the one she was supposed to get married to called her out while they were literally at the altar. In front of everybody. Liz then stands up and pulls her own alpha power. Andre promises to talk to the queen about an official alpha challenge between the two of them.
Hunter takes Liz back to his apartment, and gives her a credit card that Riley had arranged for her. The two of them then bang. When they’re finished, he tells her that he used to work as basically a bounty hunter. But one of them decided to murder Hunter’s parents as payback for… Failing to capture him the first time, I guess?
He also says that he found evidence that Sophia 100% knew about the dragon shacking up with the wolf and having a bunch of babies. That she knew how to save the dragons, but decided to let her hate (and her desire to fuck the male leads) drive her actions instead.
Later, some dude named James shows up. He makes no effort to hide how sexually attracted to Liz he is, and the entire thing is beyond icky. He tells Liz that the queen wants to have a word with her. Liz is like “Thanks, bye!” before she basically slams the door in his face.

The Stranger
Orson Welles said there was nothing of him in his THE STRANGER (1946, Amazon Prime, TCM, Tubi, YouTube). That statement may stem from his disappointment that the film’s original opening, showing his Nazi war criminal escaping through Latin America, was cut. But there’s still a lot of his baroque vision in the film, particularly in the long tracking shots, another war criminal’s escape, some of the cluttered small-town setting and the grandiose finale. And Russell Metty, who would later shoot TOUCH OF EVIL (1958), does a terrific job of filling the screen with foreboding shadows. There are other scenes that aren’t as distinctive and some concessions to studio tastes that probably rankled Welles. His Franz Kindler, architect of The Final Solution, has changed his name and done such a good job establishing himself in a small New England town that he’s marrying a Supreme Court justice’s daughter (Loretta Young). A fellow Nazi (Konstantine Shayne) and a Nazi hunter (Edward G. Robinson) track him there, setting the stage for all sorts of trouble. The main sticking point for me in the film is Young’s character (not so much her performance; she plays what the writers have stuck her with), who’s so devoted to her wifely duties she lets her husband off the hook even after he confesses to poisoning her dog. She deserves credit for standing up for Welles when producer Sam Spiegel tried to interfere, letting Welles shoot scenes to favor Robinson and sharing the screen with the 18-year-old Richard Long, who, in only his second film, manages to be even prettier than she. Welles is delightfully over-the-top when he needs to be. There’s also a fine performance by Philip Merivale as Young and Long’s father. Robinson is wonderful, as usual, whether silently tracking his quarry or at one point reciting Emerson on crime to taunt Welles. At the same time, it’s hard not to regret Welles’ losing his original casting choice, Agnes Moorehead. The producers couldn’t see a woman in the role, but I think it would have provided a powerful, even subversive, counterbalance to Young’s addle-pated stand-by-your-man protestations.
