The Lagoon Nebula, M8 // RobDSJ
Here, the Lagoon Nebula is being displayed in the "SHO palette." This is the palette commonly used by the Hubble Space Telescope in its images, where you map the light produced by three elements, sulfur (S), hydrogen (H), and oxygen (O) to three colors, red, green, and blue.
The Lagoon Nebula has a cluster at the center responsible for ionizing the gas that is only about 2 million years old. The gas stretches across the sky a length equivalent to about 3 full moons.

Fortunately, that's where the posts come in.

"In a story where we view everything from Sunny's perspective, someone who's been repressing everything about this incident so deeply"
You know what other work of fiction does this exact "protagonist with repressed memories has to face the truth of having killed their loved one" plot but does it way better? Silent Hill 2.
SH2's plot twist is that its main protagonist, James Sunderland, killed his wife Mary three years before the game's events and repressed the memory of the murder, convincing himself that Mary actually died of a terminal illness she was suffering from at the time he killed her. The terminal illness is a heavy factor in the murder - because it disfigured Mary and made her confront her own mortality at the age of 25, she repeatedly lashed out at James, who tried to take care of her despite his own despair. Eventually, watching his wife wither away and being powerless to do anything about it, Mary's mood-swings, resentment of the burden she put on him and a desire to relieve her of the misery she was in drove James to smother her with a pillow.
The reason I'm bringing it up is because SH2 actually foreshadows its twist - three out of the four characters James meets throughout the game vaguely reference that James' relationship with Mary wasn't as good as James implies it was, the fourth character (whom you fight as a boss and who killed a dog at some point before coming to Silent Hill) alludes to the fact that James must be a murderer too if he is in the town in the first place, Pyramid Head's design being based on a painting of an executioner and him pursuing James over the course of the game implies James is a criminal who wants to be punished, one of the locations James has to go through is literally a prison, etc. The "Hallway" conversation I've linked in the paragraph above is used by the game to show how James and Mary's relationship worsened after she contracted her illness; as I said, the dialogue clearly implies Mary had such mood-swings pretty frequently.
OMORI doesn't have much foreshadowing for the real cause of Mari's death, nor does it have anything similar to the "Hallway" conversation to show how harsh she got with Sunny. A good chunk of the hints the game provides (Omori's Furious emotion showing a single eye similar to Mari's hanged body, Something in the Water's little hanged bodies, Something's general design) would lead the player to believe Mari did kill herself before the story swerves around in its last hour and reveals that Sunny committed manslaughter. The only hints I could call hints are the prevalence of staircases in cutscenes before Sunny fights his fears and maybe the storage room, but even then my point stands - it's just not enough.
(oh, I also remembered the "You did it" poster in Orange Oasis. Which is an optional location, thus making crucial foreshadowing very easily missed. lol and lmao)
That brings me to your next point.
"I don't really see where a direct explanation of the build-up to the fight beyond that would fit."
Black Space.
Since it (ostensibly) represents Sunny's unpredictable subconscious, you could just make it the framing device for Sunny's backstory akin to Bojack Horseman's Time's Arrow, an episode where a character's backstory memories (traumatic and otherwise) are filtered through her emotional perception of the events at the time they happened and her unstable mental state in the present day.
A very good example of how Time's Arrow manages to convey trauma without sacrificing story is its signature scene - a formative memory from the character's childhood, in which she sees her father callously dispose of her beloved toy by burning it in the fireplace while telling her to keep her emotions in check and not to cry lest she ends up like her mother, who was lobotomized some time ago and consequently became a shadow of her former self. Since everything the audience sees in this episode is filtered through the character's emotions, her father's callousness is represented by the aforementioned fireplace behind him becoming a wall of hellfire, while her mother's status as a shadow of her former self is represented by her being a literal shadow with the lobotomy scar highlighted.
That brings me to your next point.
"A lot of the build-up due to that is expressed metaphorically through Headspace and Black Space."
Where? Literally where?
What, am I supposed to see the room with the "Peter Griffin chokes on a rice cake"-like BGM as a representation of the Deep emotional pain Sunny experienced as a result of Mari's scolding? lmao
That brings me to your next point.
Tumblr media
Again, I was talking about the game not showing us the deterioration of Sunny and Mari's relationship over the course of their practicing. You seem to have missed that point completely, but just to make something clear
The parallel you're talking about doesn't even work. Mari was dead the moment she hit the bottom of the staircase. Basil was still alive and in active danger of dying, which means that he was able to be rescued.
Mari wasn't.
"Lots of people see spaceboy as a parallel to hero but no one thinks if sweetheart (and her chase of perfectionism all throughout the game) is a parallel for mari."
Actually, a lot of people do. It's the only theory about her I've seen floating around when people discuss the meaning she supposedly has, and I've been lurking around in this fandom for quite a while now.
By the way,
Tumblr media
>>"People aren't just filling it in themselves like fanfiction" >>proceeds to use fanon interpretations as an argument
If that style of writing isn't something you like, that's ok! Completely understandable, not everyone wants to pick through the details for things like that
Implying that the work you're defending is just Too Genius™ for your interlocutor to understand isn't a great way to endear them to your argument.
But I wouldn't necessarily call it bad writing. You're allowed to not like something without it being inherently bad or poorly made.
The inverse is also true - you're allowed to like something without it being good! What constitutes a "good" work of fiction is subjective, after all. I have my own fair share of works I'm really fond of despite how shitty they are lol
Just don't get all defensive and insist that the work you like is too Subtle and Intricate to understand when someone points out the very glaring and numerous flaws.
(also bro really said "agree to disagree" and then wrote me a giant reply justifying their opinion lmao)

W40 (also known as Sh2-64 and RCW 174) is a stellar nursery or some 25 light-years across, between 1,000 and 2,000 light years-away from Earth in the conquila (the Eagle) close to the border with Serpenss Cauda (Serpent’s Tail).
This dark cloud is one of the nearest massive star-forming (HII) regions, known and is part of Gould’s Belt, a giant ring of stars – tilted to the Milky Way by 20 degrees that circles the night sky because the Solar System just happens to lie near the center of the call.
The stellar nursery is so shrouded in dust that no infrared satellite before Herschel has been to able to see into it. Thanks to Herschel’s superior sensitivity at the longest wavelengths of infrared, I’m showing you the first picture of the interior of W40.
Altogether, about 600 newly forming stars are crowded into colorful these filaments of dust. It is estimated that about 150 of these are protostars, celestial objects in the final stages of formation. Each one just needs to ignite nuclear fusion in its core to become a true star. The other 450 objects are insufficiently developed to considered protostars, but theses too will will become stars.
The blue area is home to a young OB association with at least three young massive OB stars that are illuminating the ionized hydrogen gas, causing it to shine. (OBB associations usually contain 10–100 massive stars of spectral class O and B and, in addition, hundreds, or of low- and intermediate-mass stars).
The bright nebula is expanding into the medium, compressing the ambient gas on its way. This has created a second generation of young very protostars which are only seen at the far-infrared wavelengths accessible to Herschel.
At least 50 percent of the stars in our Milky Way galaxy formed in massive clusters of thousands of stars similar to W40. Evidence suggests that the Solar System developed in such a cluster almost 5 billion years ago.
W40 is difficult to view with optical telescopes because it lies less than 3 degrees from the main plane of the Milky Way, behind obscuring clouds of interstellar dust and gas.
This image was tasks on October 24, 2009 using two of Herschel’s instruments: the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) and the Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE).

'Smiling cat' nebula captured in new ESO image his cloud of orange and red, part of the Sh2-284 nebula, is shown here in spectacular detail using data from the VLT Survey Telescope, hosted by the European Southern Observatory (ESO). This nebula is teeming with young stars, as gas and dust within it clumps together to form new suns. If you take a look at the cloud as a whole, you might be able to make out the face of a cat, smiling down from the sky. The Sh2-284 stellar nursery is a vast region of dust and gas and its brightest part, visible in this image, is about 150 light-years (over 1400 trillion kilometers) across. It’s located some 15 000 light-years away from Earth in the constellation Monoceros. Nestled in the centre of the brightest part of the nebula — right under the ‘cat’s nose’ — is a cluster of young stars known as Dolidze 25, which produces large amounts of strong radiation and winds. The radiation is powerful enough to ionise the hydrogen gas in the cloud, thereby producing its bright orange and red colours. It’s in clouds like this that the building blocks for new stars reside. The winds from the central cluster of stars push away the gas and dust in the nebula, hollowing out its centre. As the winds encounter denser pockets of material, these offer more resistance meaning that the areas around them are eroded away first. This creates several pillars that can be seen along the edges of Sh2-284 pointing at the centre of the nebula, such as the one on the right-hand side of the frame. While these pillars might look small in the image, they are in fact several light-years wide and contain vast amounts of gas and dust out of which new stars form. This image was created using data from the VLT Survey Telescope (VST), which is owned by The National Institute for Astrophysics in Italy, INAF, and is hosted at ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chile. The VST is dedicated to mapping the southern sky in visible light and makes use of a 256-million-pixel camera specially designed for taking very wide-field images. This image is part of the VST Photometric Hα Survey of the Southern Galactic Plane and Bulge (VPHAS+), which has studied some 500 million objects in our home galaxy, helping us better understand the birth, life, and eventual death of stars within our Milky Way.

Cosmic Clouds in Cygnus Image Credit & Copyright: Wolfgang Zimmermann
Explanation: These cosmic clouds of gas and dust drift through rich star fields along the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy toward the high flying constellation Cygnus. They're too faint to be seen with the unaided eye though, even on a clear, dark night. Image data from a camera and telephoto lens using narrowband filters was used to construct this 10 degree wide field of view. The deep mosaic reveals a region that includes star forming dust clouds seen in silhouette against the characteristic glow of atomic hydrogen and oxygen gas. NGC 6888 is the standout emission nebula near the top. Blown by winds from an massive Wolf-Rayet star it's about 25 light-years across and known as the Crescent Nebula. A faint bluish curl just below center in the frame is also the signature of a Wolf-Rayet star. Burning fuel at a prodigious rate and near the end of their stellar lives, both stars will ultimately go out with a bang in a spectacular supernova explosion. Toward the right, a massive, young O type star powers the glow of Sh2-101, the Tulip Nebula.

The sh2 soundtrack is on Amazon for a good price! I think $20 or $25?
I assume you're referring to the CD soundtracks? But yeah I really want to get those eventually too :0 I don't buy things on amazon but that's good to know thank you for telling me! I was actually thinking about the vinyl records because I hope to buy it one day. (they are worth $100-300+)

The thing is, I can’t think of anything more ‘finger curling on the monkey’s paw’ than a SH2 remake. It’s not that I hate the idea on principal, it’s just that I cannot think of a worse combination.
This is the era of forcing employees to crunch, of forcing them to watch hardcore gore videos to make sure they get the effects right. The era of not paying voice actors what they deserve or giving them royalties (which iirc, was already an issue in SH3). Worst of all, it’s the era of ‘take our rushed remake and forget the original ever existed’, but I guess we’re lucky that Konami barely releases ports and can’t do what the GTA definitive edition did.
And even if it’s a 1:1 remake with the original voice actors and Pyramid Head’s bulge is dancing around like David Bowie in Labyrinth, I just know we’re gonna find out that Born From a Wish is $25 DLC or that you’ll have to spend $10 to put James in a red coat or something.
Anyway I’ll be at work when the announcement happens \o/

6. excessive ooc. I think it's fine as long as it's balanced amount with an equal amount of rp or close to it at least. A lot depends on what the mun is talking about and what their personality is like, too. Some people are just really passionate and want to rant about their interests and then there's some that are just full of themselves and just their blogs to inflate their sense of self-importance so I tend to steer clear of the latter. 18. shipping. I've never been opposed to shipping as long as it develops naturally. There are some pairings, generally speaking, I just could never see being together. That said, I do like me a good ole slow burn. The thing that makes rp so fun is having characters that would never interact with each other from their own respective universes do just that.
25. your character. You have no idea the can of worms you just opened lol. Let's see, James is your everyday man with a dark secret and he's been with me the longest since SH2 was my first game ever along with my introduction to the survival horror genre. Most people wouldn't think it at first glance but this man so many layers of complexity behind his seemingly ordinary facade. And since he's not your standard action hero survival horror protagonist it makes the terrible things he goes through feel more realistic as opposed to simply grunting or dropping a cheesy one-liners when something happens. He is no one's power fantasy, you're meant to feel just as vulnerable and powerless as him and that's why SH2 is so effective.
Some people have tried to water this character but the fact of the matter is James is a morally grey character that can neither be fully absolved or fully condemned. Most don't want to consider the moral nuisances of James being a man who genuinely loved his wife, watched her endure so much agony for three years before eventually snapping and doing the unthinkable in a moment of weakness. And for people that have lost loved ones to terminal illness, the story hits especially hard.

The Lagoon Nebula, M8 // John Dziuba
Zoomed-in, now you can see some of the concentrations of interstellar dust at the heart of the Lagoon Nebula. The darkest and densest parts are called Bok globules where new stars are being formed. These globules are on average 10,000 astronomical units* in diameter.
*An astronomical unit is the distance between the Earth and the Sun, or about 93 million miles.

HUGE MIXED CORN Seeds Mix, Heirloom Organic Non-Gmo BN25 CORN Heirloom Mix 25 + Seeds vegetable garden SPRING SUMMER popcorn sweetcorn. HEIRLOOM - OPEN POLLINATED Most use this Mix Corn for decorative purposes, but young ears can definitely be roasted or boiled for dinner. Add to soups or salads for a fun pop of color and flavor. Loved for their ornamental value, Glass Gem's kernels are also good as popped corn or ground for cornmeal. Count: 25 Full Sun Sprouts in 7-10 Days Seed Depth: 1-2" Ideal Temperature: 75-80 F Plant Spacing: 12" Plant height: 4-5' Frost Hardy: No Eye-catching color Sweet, with lots of corn flavor Higher antioxidants than other sweet corn Color deepens with cooking Bred using traditional, non-GMO practices We've grown lots of colorful corn in our test gardens, but this mix is the first to combine dazzling purple and white kernels with a creamy, sweet corn flavor. When you sink your teeth into these kernels, you'll experience a juicy sweetness and creamy, old-timey corn flavor. Absolutely delicious! It's also higher in antioxidants than other sweet corn varieties. It has been selected for shorter and stronger plants to help prevent lodging; shinier and glossier kernels; 30-35% red husks and an ideal shank length for ease of pulling the husk back. The ears average 9 to 11" in length and have a wide range of color combinations including striped kernels. We’re sure you’ll find this fine ornamental corn to be an attractive addition to your fall displays. An interesting and tasty mix of sweet corn varieties. Starts producing in about 70 days from planting seeds, a real novelty, super delicious and excellent in the kitchen, very ez to grow! Sweet corn can be sown in spring after all danger of frost has passed. Successive plantings are possible to extend the harvest until September in most areas in America. From yummy open-pollinated sweet corn enjoyed at the dinner table, to colorful dried corn used for decorating homes and grinding cornmeal, you’ll find it here. Species: Variety of Corn. We do NOT make any claims that you will receive all 125+ seed varieties since we have no way of knowing which are which. Please note that all available varieties have been randomly mixed in ONE SINGLE PACKET – so there will a surprise factor until fruit start to set! Rainbow Corn Mix, Sweet, Ambrosia Hybrid, Blue Hopi, Golden Bantam, Honey Select Hybrid, Jubilee Hybrid, Nirvana Hybrid, Peaches and Cream, Picasso Hybrid, Flint Corn, Dent Corn, Popcorn, Sweet Rainbow Corn, Open Oak Party Mix, Indian Mini Mix Corn, Ornamental Corn, Ornamental Maize mix, Bodacious Sweet Corn and much more Growing Tips: Direct sow into the richest soil available 1-2 weeks before last spring frost. Succession planting prolongs harvest; planting in blocks improves pollination. Ears of corn are ready to harvest about 17-20 days after the silks appear. The kernels should be firm. Open an ear and pierce a kernel with your fingernail. If the liquid is watery, the corn is not ripe yet. It should be milky. If it is creamy, it is overripe and will not taste as sweet. Firmly grip the ear and twist downward to harvest. Take care not to break the plant when harvesting the first ear, or the second ear will not develop. Most corn produces two ears. Store unhusked corn in the fridge and consume as soon as possible. Sh2 and SE varieties keep the longest in the fridge, up to one week. Corn freezes well after blanching and may also be canned using a pressure cooker. Immature ears may be pickled. For better ear fill, plant a number of short rows together instead of a single long row, this helps insure pollination. How to Sow and Plant Growing corn is easy provided you have enough space and plenty of sun. Corn is wind-pollinated, so you need to plant in blocks to ensure pollination. You should have a minimum 10 foot by 10-foot area. The exception to this rule is ‘On Deck’ corn, which has been bred to grow in containers. If you are growing ‘On Deck’, choose a container that is at least 24 inches wide and deep and plant nine seeds evenly spaced. Isolate corn varieties when recommended (Sh2s), by planting corn seeds at least 250 feet apart, or select varieties that mature at least 2 weeks apart so they will not cross-pollinate. When choosing a site for corn, plant on the north side of your garden so the tall plants do not shade other plants in your vegetable garden. Corn is a warm-season crop and should not be planted in cool soils. The non Sh2 varieties tend to be more tolerant of cool soils, but in general, the soil should be about 65 degrees F or warmer. Sow corn seed 1 inch deep, 5 to 6 inches apart in rows 2 to 3 feet apart. Seedlings emerge in 7-14 days. When corn seedlings are 3-5 inches tall and healthy, thin to 1 foot apart. How to Grow Keep weeds under control during the growing season. Weeds compete with plants for water, space, and nutrients, so control them by either cultivating often or using mulch to prevent their seeds from germinating. Keep plants well-watered during dry periods to promote uninterrupted growth. Corn needs 1-2 inches of rain per week for best production. Use a rain gauge to check to see if you need to add water. Corn is also a heavy feeder and will benefit from side dressings of fertilizer applied as directed through the growing season. Monitor for pests and diseases. Check with your local Cooperative Extension Service for pest controls recommended for your area. Suckers tend to form at the base of the plants; they help support the stalks and make food for the plant. The stalks may have to be staked in windy areas, but in general, they are self-supporting. Sunflowers are a good companion plant for corns. Direct sow sunflowers in rows parallel to corn rows to help separate corn varieties that need isolation from each other. Choose sunflower varieties of comparable height to the corn plantings. The sunflower border, with vibrant hues in russets to golden-yellow, will add sparkle next to the almost all-green corn plot. The ‘Three Sisters (corn, bean, and squash) are traditional companion plantings with Native American gardeners. Note: No tracking # will be provided to make the shipping cost-effective for us and free for you. Returns & exchanges Not accepted. But please contact me if you have problems with your order Our seeds are guaranteed to germinate. Once the seeds have sprouted, please understand that we cannot be held responsible for the many uncontrollable growing and climatic conditions that must be met to ensure the success of your crop(s). I try my best to make my buyers happy and would appreciate it if you'd contact me first if you have any questions or problems with your order. From NASA Image of the Day; April 19, 2018:
Celebrating 28 Years of the Hubble Space Telescope
This colorful image, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, celebrates the Earth-orbiting observatory’s 28th anniversary of viewing the heavens, giving us a window seat to the universe’s extraordinary stellar tapestry of birth and destruction. At the center of this image is a monster young star 200,000 times brighter than our Sun that is blasting powerful ultraviolet radiation and hurricane-like stellar winds, carving out a fantasy landscape of ridges, cavities, and mountains of gas and dust.
This mayhem is all happening at the heart of the Lagoon Nebula, a vast stellar nursery located 4,000 light-years away, visible in binoculars as merely a smudge of light with a bright core.
The giant star, called Herschel 36, is bursting out of its natal cocoon of material, unleashing blistering radiation and torrential stellar winds, which are streams of subatomic particles, that push dust away in curtain-like sheets. This action resembles the Sun bursting through the clouds at the end of an afternoon thunderstorm.
Herschel 36’s violent activity has blasted holes in the bubble-shaped cloud, allowing astronomers to study this action-packed stellar breeding ground. The hefty star is 32 times more massive and 40,000 times hotter than our Sun, and is nearly nine times our Sun’s diameter. Herschel 36 is still very active because it is young by a star’s standards, only 1 million years old. Based on its mass, it will live for another 5 million years. In comparison, our smaller Sun is 5 billion years old and will live another 5 billion years.
The image shows a region of the nebula measuring about 4 light-years across.
