The war on self-defense has taken yet another absurd turn; first they come after your right to actively defend yourself, now in New York passively protecting yourself is outlawed too

DP Side Hoes Week 2024
Dani Phantom
Self-Defense
Warning: angst and mentions of character death
Danielle stared at the moon over the hill she stood on. A gentle breeze blew through her ragged clothes, offering some relief from the humidity. June was quite warm and it being nighttime didn’t stop that. The rickety sign of Amity Park’s graveyard creaked ominously as it was disturbed, the only sound made since she touched the grass in front of the tree she was facing.
Dani had regrets in her short life. Like the fact that she had to steal food so she could eat. She was too young for a job. Not that she’d want one, anyway. She hated how she had to manipulate people’s kindness in a way so it’d benefited her. It reminded her of how she was when living with Vlad.
Dani grimaced. The name of that man left a bitter taste in her mouth.
There was a time she used to regret not being a better daughter. Not finishing duties on time or failing her training got on his nerves and upset her greatly. The day she got to say she progressed to that point took a while to come to fruition as a result.
But her biggest regret was that she had to help kill her brothers.
Yes, kill. She knew what she was doing. Danny didn’t realize until their showdown in Vlad’s cabin. Her brothers willingly attacked them on “Master’s” orders, but they were mindless. They didn’t understand.
Not like her. Dani never forgot their final expressions as they melted. She helped Danny with her muscular brother and invisibly watched as he took down her skeletal brother. Her tiny brother was so horrified as he melted. And he just got turned into an actual copy of Danny, too…
And her little brother. The one not even out of his chamber had to be forcefully smacked into reality and immediately died as a result.
Danny assured her that that was not her fault, that it was his, but it still happened. Even if that death was caused by self-defense, it doesn't feel that way.
The tree’s branches swayed lightly as another breeze hit it. The bark was peeling lightly and a piece fell on the ground in the middle four mounds. Dani bent down and gently wiped the bark away, smoothing the dirt in the process.
Dani had taken part of each of their remains and buried them here. They all have a little grave that their sister and cousin can come and remember them by. Maybe their souls will rest easier.
Dani clenched her fists as she stood up, eyes hardening. There was one thing she never regretted, though. Attacking and leaving her creator.
Not father. Creator.
He never wanted her. He never wanted any of them. They weren’t perfect. Maybe her little brother would’ve been, but she still would love him just as much as she does her other brothers.
Even if she never showed it. There was no animosity or anything with the siblings, just neutrality. They were all there just to serve a purpose. Her one actual job which made her despise working. The only kind thing she has done for the boys was make their graves. Too late for anything else.
She’s more like Vlad than she thought. And she hates it.
So when she was able to attack him at the Rockies and in his lab in Amity, she let loose and gave him everything she had.
He attacked her first, after all. It was right.
After that, she has tried to better herself to not be like him anymore. To own up to her regrets even if she has no choice in some of them. She’ll never go after anyone else unless they do first.
Dani gave one last remorseful expression at the graves before taking off, disturbing the grass again.
Tears blew behind her as she flew. Danny was wrong. She had a choice to stop what happened, to not fight, to hurt Danny and all of them. Danny didn’t. Danny had to defend himself, including from her. He’s just too nice to keep mentioning it.
Maybe one day she can make it up to them. But for now, flowers will do.

Psychology of a Self-Defense Shooting
As a staunch advocate for the Second Amendment, I support anyone who wants to own and carry a firearm. I believe they must, first, have the mental and emotional capacity to accept that responsibility and, second, have proper and regular training.
When family or friends tell me they're going to buy a gun, the cop in me responds "can you kill another human being and live with the psychological and financial consequences?"; because you will get arrested and sued. The police will arrest you and the family of the dead, or seriously injured, person will sue you.
I follow up that they must get mentally prepared, NOW, to know what they will do when they are confronted with a self-defense encounter. The number two rule in firearm safety is "don't point a firearm at anyone/anything you don't want to kill/destroy" and the number one rule in conceal carry is "don't pull/display your firearm unless you intend to use it". In your mind, right now, you must make the determination that you will kill anyone who puts your life, or loved ones lives, in jeopardy. You must determine that you will live with the consequences BEFORE that situation presents itself.
In a self-defense situation, you have seconds to decide how you will respond and you must respond as if your life depends on it; because it does. You can't "think" about it; it must be instinctual, not intellectual. Instinctual in that you have thought about this and KNOW what you will do in response. The attacker has already had time to think about, and KNOW, they are willing to hurt or kill their victim.
Your other options are to run (if you can) or give the perp(s) whatever they want if that's all they want.
Always be aware of what is going on around you and KNOW, BEFOREHAND, how you will respond to a self-defense encounter.

(forwarded to this blog from my main)
of course! i talk a lot about firearms because they're a hot button issue and misinformation about them is dangerous, but firearms are by no means the most important component of defense. they're not even strictly necessary; they help but you're not doomed if you aren't in a position to incorporate them into your life.
the general anatomy of personal safety comes in a hierarchy of priorities:
1. avoiding being put into dangerous confrontations.
2. (where prevention is not feasible) escaping dangerous confrontations that are in progress.
3. (where escape is not feasible) ending dangerous confrontations that are in progress.
it is important to note that the one thing that helps you in all three situations is community. the buddy system works wonders. if you are at risk, run errands with a friend/loved one. if you must go somewhere dubious alone, tell your nearby support system where and when you should be back, so it is apparent immediately if something is wrong. get to learn your neighbors' names, learn who is going to have your back and who could use your help.
here are my general tips for self-defense based on this model of danger:
when it comes to escaping a confrontation, a big part of this is de-escalation. do not escalate or attempt to aggravate someone who is behaving in a threatening manner. do not play the role of an active participant; someone who is going to give an attacker the confrontation that they want. use neutral body language, signal to your support system that you need help, call for help if necessary, and just get the fuck out of there. never underestimate the power of shouting and running.
when it comes to ending a dangerous confrontation, the key word is ending, not winning. you're not trying to win a fight, you're trying to get back to your life. escape is still the priority, do not stick around to 'defeat' your attacker or whatever. the use of lethal weapons is deeply discouraged when you have access to deterrents. pain deterrents such as mace, pepper spray, etc. can buy you the time necessary to get help or escape, and are far easier to carry on your person than a lethal weapon. additionally, i highly recommend carrying a rechargeable LED flashlight on you at all times. modern tech has resulted in a market saturated with affordable flashlights that pack a serious amount of lumens, and fit right in your pocket. i often forget i even have my streamlight on me, it's that comfortable to carry. and while light is an obvious resource in other situations, such as power outages or night chores, light is a key resource to self-defense. you have to see what is going on in order to address it. a nighttime aggressor may be relying on the anonymity and disorienting nature of dark surroundings to have the upper hand, and may likely be deterred by the presence of a bright light, but also most LED lights these days put out enough lumens to disorient a creep even before it gets all that dark out. getting hit directly in the retinas by a 600+ lumen flashlight at night fucking wrecks your ability to see and act. remember, disorienting an attacker long enough to get help or get out will save your skin way better than a weapon will.
it is pivotal that you practice situational awareness if you are worried about an environment posing a threat. keep your eyes on the area and off your phone. know your exits, and stick to areas that won't isolate you with a potential aggressor. keep your car/house keys handy. keep your phone handy if you need to make a call.
self-defense courses seem like an obvious point to make here, but i want to stress that the value of knowing what to expect in a confrontation is without peer. dry runs with an instructor can help you to know how to use your body to react in a split second situation; a skill many take for granted. if you want to full-on learn a martial art, that's awesome! martial arts are very good for you in a lot of different ways. but if you're worried about self-defense, be sure to stress learning how to use your body to escape/end a confrontation more than turning it into some sparring match. it's a completely different skill entirely but equally worth acquainting yourself with.
hope that helps! i try to discourage the act of 'buying' safety but a good light and some pain deterrent like pepper spray are relatively affordable compliments to the know-how that saves lives. i also recommend assembling a first-aid kit and learning how to perform first-aid. if you're going to buy a pre-made kit, that's fine, but take the time to learn every component in there and how to use it to save lives. keep one in your car, in your house, your bag if you go out, and routinely practice and review first-aid techniques.

My spouse and I were stalked at the store, today.
I won't go into much detail because it's not necessary, but my spouse's reaction compared to mine made me realize that some people literally have no idea what to do if this is ever happening. They were scared and visibly distressed, which is perfectly understandable, but other than running away.. their first instinct was to confront the man. Unless this is absolutely necessary, please do NOT do that. Here's what you should do instead:
Remain calm. Try not to tip them off to the fact that you know that you are being followed, and carefully collect identifying details about the person stalking you. In our case, this was a man about six feet tall wearing a basspro hat backwards, and some kind of bright blue, patriotic shirt with an American flag. When he took his hat off, he had very patchy light hair.
Next, go immediately to an area with cameras. In this case, we were in Walmart and so I went to the pharmacy area where cameras typically are. There's usually cameras there, by cosmetics, the alcohol aisle, etc. Stop nearby it so you can look at the screen (or reflection if it's the disk kind). This accomplishes two things: Getting both you and the stalker on camera, and being able to confirm that you are indeed being followed.
After that, go to the nearest source of help. This can be a nearby worker, the pharmacy counter, the automotive center, or the customer service desk. We went to the front of the store and I told a greeter, since he is watching the door, and my spouse told a team lead at the service desk. The team lead saw this man acting suspicious and his description for himself, which is very helpful. It got brought to a manager, and then the AP team. They are now going to check the cameras, confirm the description, and collect evidence.
Walmart cameras have facial recognition software, so they can track the man's movements and behaviors as well as see if he's banned, done this before, etc. If necessary, they will bring it to law enforcement.
You can always ask a worker to escort you out to your car and help you load it. Once you are inside your vehicle, do not linger. Leave immediately. If you need to stop for any reason, do so at a well-lit, crowded spot like a busy gas station. Be aware of your surroundings, and if you don't feel safe, try to contact a friend to stay with or escort you.
The bottom line here is, collect evidence and tell customer service workers whatever you can without confronting the stalker. You want to catch this man in the act, not give him a reason to flee. He may just return and do this creepy behavior to a different person if he isn't caught on camera or if workers aren't made aware of his presence and behavior.
Stay safe out there, guys. Please. Think of yourself and the others around you, and be aware of your surroundings at all times. If you see something, SAY something. My spouse and I only noticed because of a kind lady informing us that we were being followed and to be careful. It's better to be wrong than to let someone get stalked through the store. Hopefully this will help even one person be calm if this ever happens to them.
On a side note, if you DO have to confront the stalker, don't be afraid to get loud. Use your environment for you, if any violence occurs for any reason. Cans of soup, things within range that can be thrown, even air fresheners or cleaning chemicals that you can squirt in the assailant's face can be helpful in defending yourself. Back away and get help quickly once it is safe to disengage.
Just remember, stay calm, and everything will fall into place.
Stay safe out there.

Reviewing Basics About War and Everything Else
Explaining everything gives us a chance to review what’s taken for granted as we help those who never granted access to basic facts in their skulls.  Simple tones aren’t just for first contact with aliens.  Liberals could avoid feeling they’re being condescended to if they started grasping simple notions.  Declaring Israel needed to cease firing at terrorists who certainly won’t respect the honor system serves as yet another failed test.
Defining what war is may help those confused about which side to back.  We all agree it is very bad.  The rather unpleasant state involves explosions that may damage more than hearing.  People who end up dead and stuff that ends up broken.  The only thing worse may be not fighting one on account of how the diabolical other side may continue to wage it.
World War III’s Axis fans don’t notice the corpses that spurred a righteous response.  Oh: it’s like inflation.  Missing steps like the Underpants Gnomes is essentially their doctrine. The difference is that liberals don’t end up discovering how commerce works.
It’s mean to make residents leave.  Tacit or active Hamas allies avoid encountering a reason Israel got bossy.  The evictors don’t need to root out the human demons who want to prevent their continued existence or anything.  Pondering why there’s an evacuation might lead to the end of sanctimony, and feeling superior is how liberals fuel themselves.  Their solar panels don’t work.
Time moving forward may seem restraining.  But at least noticing there’s only one direction allows for knowing which events happen first.  Take noticing just when a war began, which we call the Pearl Harbor factor.  For Earth’s present major conflict, recall just which side flew in to a music festival on a contraption too primitive for Mad Max and slaughtered everyone they could for the crime of not eating bacon for the wrong reason.
Locating terrorists before they go on another serial killing rampage through your streets might just be a legitimate reason for displacement.  I’m sorry for the disruption.  Finding something to drink requires excessive effort for some right not.  But primary victims will never have water or anything else again.  The Hamas Mutual Aid Society is stingy with Evian.
Determining who started this is a distinction that’s as important as it is easy.  Even amateur conflict detectives can uncover the most crucial aspect with minimal scrutiny.  There shouldn’t be any worry about something so obvious to spot, yet the answer eludes the self-proclaimed smartest amongst us.
Ask if one side turned water pipes into rockets.  The weapon of primitive losers who don’t even use protractors to aim is acceptable to fiends who want to kill anyone they might hit.  Condemning practices that are savage in every way shouldn’t be this hard.
Board the tour bus at any stop.  Noticing where the loop starts is too difficult to grasp for phonily high-minded types who cherish chances to condemn the cycle of violence without noting where said cycle began.
Liberals never follow consequences, which explains why they’re liberals.  Grasping what comes next is for soothsayers.  The most sophisticated analysts believe in rationality and not magic about predicting tomorrow, which is why they’re always shocked when printing money doesn’t cure poverty.
Pondering just why Israel is fighting would mean acknowledging a certain religion maintains a terror problem.  College professors reflexively thought that means Judaism.  Attacking civilization charms those living far away while benefiting from cushy protections.  Total non-anti-Semites are suspiciously eager to harvest grievances against a country that seems like America in its decadent love for gun rights and true tolerance.
Foes of the only place they’d want to live in the Middle East adore making up tales.  Pretending a rather broad-minded nation is a group of seething Islamophobic colonialists on occupied land who run their own open-air concentration camps doesn’t conform with reality, but that’s never stopped Democrats from maintaining their beliefs.
Leftists figure Israel must be the violators if they can win wars.  Equating strength with violation is as foolish as Donald Trump declaring power is all that matters.  They surely enjoy thinking on his terms.  They also don’t grasp how bearing arms allows the virtuous to outmuscle fiends if you’re seeking consistency.
The only debate is whether they’re unaware or familiar.  The result is the same, so figuring out why one of the two sides opposes the most just war possible is academic.  Condemning the republic fighting back against terrorism makes it seem as if the conflict is simply a matter of sadism.
Good guys try their hardest, which is the one time villains’ apologists aren’t into appeasement.  Israel is already at an infinitely higher standard for protecting the innocent, and the entity fighting to continue existing is still never good enough for liberals preening like it’s a serious Steven Spielberg movie.  Stick to special effects.
You simply can’t start a binge on season four.  Confused viewers are missing important context.  Don’t they wonder how characters got to the present situation?  Liberals don’t grasp drama or anything else.  Trying to explain what’s happening to the clueless means nobody can follow, which they sickly seem to enjoy.  The inattentive sure seem to enjoy others being as oblivious.
