German Chancellor Olaf Scholz sends a surprising video message to congratulate Ukraine on their Independence Day

In his video address - published with German, English and Ukrainian subtitles - the Chancellor spoke to the people in Ukraine and the Ukrainians current living in Germany. He referred to all Ukrainians as friends.

Chancellor Scholz has been critized since the start of the full-scale war. After giving a historic speech when the war started (the so called "Zeitenwende"-speech), promosing to help and support Ukraine, the Chancellor and main parts of his government have been under constant critism.

The critism covered many topics.

Germany (= the government) and mainly the Chancellor was accussed of trying to appease Putin and wanting to negotiate with him. Scholz, as well as France President Macron, received lots of backlash for calls with Putin after the start of the war. Germany also failed to apologise for their close relationship with Russia, which resulted in an energy depency and a lack of support for Ukraine since eight years. Especially the current German President Steinmeier and the former German Chancellor Schröder, who is to this day close friends with Putin, were critized. Germany also got critism for not delivering weapons or delaying the weapon deliveries, having an unclear position in regards to the war, not supporting Ukraine enough and not naming and calling out the Russian war crimes. Scholz also called the Russian-Ukrainian war "Putin's war" several times, failing to also send a strong message about Ukraine having to win this war and defeating Russia. His government and him in particular also received lots of criticism for taking a long time before visiting Ukraine and President Zelenskyy, including a shitstorm for how he handled a situation that also involved German President Frank-Walther Steinmeier. When he finally visited President Zelenskyy many people feared another Minsk agreement or other attempts to pressure Ukraine into a ceasefire or some kind of dicated peace. The government, the Parliament in particular, also got a massive shitstorm about how they had handled a speech by President Zelenskyy infront of the Parliament (via live video): after the speech the Parliament refused to let other politicians talk in support for Ukraine, said absolutely nothing about Ukraine or the speech and just continued with their order of the day - congratulations to politicans who celebrated birthday. Germany also needed some time before supporting Ukraine's EU candidate status. With the upcoming colder seasons and considering Germany's depency on Russian energy, gas, coal and oil, the Chancellor and parts of his government were critized for how they handled the situation. Many people expected Germany to soften their position and reduce their support. Parts of a speech by Foreign Minister Baerbock, that seemed to indicate this, received lots of attention, but were taken out of context. Lately Germany was also part of a scandal that involved a Nordstream 1 gas turbine.

Scholz' position and his actions as well as the actions of the government were critized not only worldwide but also widely in Germany. Germans complained about the lack of support, the delay of weapon deliveries, the appeasing of Putin and Russia and the inaccurate language.

For Independence Day, Chancellor Scholz published a video message, full of surprises.

In the video address, Scholz openly calls it the Russian war. He's also talked about Russian war crimes, and calls them "war crimes", as well as the "Russian occupied Ukrainian territory", naming for example Crimea and Donbas. He also called Russia a "brutal aggressor".

Scholz mentioned that he's going to meet Ukrainian servicemen and women, who are currently for training in Germany. He also said, that Germany will deliver tanks to Ukraine as well as other weapons, including the Panzerhaubitze and air defence systems, month for month.

The Chancellor also talked about other support. He said, Germany will continue to train soldiers, will maintain the sanctions and support Ukraine with money. He also promised to support the rebuilding of Ukraine. German trains will also continue to safely deliver Ukrainian grain to safe ports. German hospitals will treat Ukrainian soldiers. Scholz also promised that German hearts and borders will stay open for everyone who is forced to flee because of "Russian terror". So far, about 1 million Ukrainian refugees live in Germany. Scholz emphasized that Ukrainian refugees are very welcome and with friends.

While not sharing a common border, Scholz still called Ukraine a neighbour and promised that Germany would continue to support Ukraine and stand next to it as long as Ukraine needs help and support.

Scholz also talked about European values and made it clear that these values are currently defended in Ukraine. He also emphasized that Ukraine belongs to the EU as member. Together with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Germany will host a conference at the end of October to talk about rebuilding Ukraine and giving the country a future.

The Chancellor further called out Russia's backward-looking imperialism and emphasized the fact that Europe is still united. He also stressed that Europe has freedom and democracy.

At the end of his address, Scholz showed himself optimistic that Ukrainians will be able to defeat Russia, because they're strong and brave. Ukrainians also have friends in Europe and everywhere in the world. The Chancellor said, he is proud that Germany considers themselves as one of these friends - today and in a joined European future.

He ended his speech with "Sława Ukrajini!".
