Happy Feast Day  Saint Tarcisius 3rd Century Feast Day: August 15 Patronage: Altar Servers and First Holy Communicants
St.Tarcisius is said to have been about 12 years old when he was beaten to death by a mob rather than deliver to them the Blessed Sacrament, which he was carrying to prisoners awaiting martyrdom under Valerian. He went instead of a priest because he was less recognizable. Legend is, that in spite of killing Tarcisius, those thugs were unable to pry open his hands to get control of the Body of Christ. Only later, when his body was returned to a priest, could the Eucharist be easily taken from his dead hands. {website}

Top 5 religious artworks? Top 5 pop/or rock songs? And top 5 obscure saints?
Top 5 Religious Artworks
The stained glass windows in my home parish (special shout-out to the Annunciation, the Nativity, and the Coronation of Mary).
That picture of Mary and Elizabeth laughing for joy.
Any picture of St. Joseph and Jesus where he's old enough to walk
The big, fancy Lady of Fatima statue us kids got our mom for Mother's Day a few years ago.
Most Pietas
Top 5 Pop or Rock Songs
Of course I've forgotten every song I've ever heard, so here's some that come to mind.
"Old Time Rock and Roll" by Bob Seger
"Drops of Jupiter" by Train
"Tell Her About It" by Billy Joel
"All for You" by Sister Hazel
"King of Anything" by Sara Bareilles
Top 5 Obscure Saints
(Not sure how obscure these are, but here's what I got).
St. Tarcisius. Dying for the Eucharist is about as dramatically Catholic as it gets.
St. Charles Lwanga: African saint martyred for helping kids escape from a pedophile king. It's a pretty dramatic story.
St. Damian of Molokai: Devoting your life to running a leper colony is pretty hardcore.
St. Frances of Rome: A married saint who opened her house to plague victims and got food replenishing miracles for it is pretty cool, and that's only the beginning of her cool miracle stories.
St. Jane Frances de Chantal: She was in a saint book I had as a kid, and I remember liking her story of raising kids and then starting a religious order

First of all, thanks for the saint uquiz. It was fun :) and I like reading your poem snippets. Compelling. Do you know Saint Anthony, he’s good at finding lost things. I always thought that was kinda poetic if not just practical. Also I went to catholic elementary school and they taught us about saint philomena, patron saint of lost causes. She was a little girl who went through terrible things bc she refused marriage from an old emperor. Like why did they tell us, a bunch of little girls about that?
you are so welcome!! it was fun to write :) (i was in a religious fugue state for several nights sobbing in miffy's inbox over the hail mary)
i am not fully acquainted with saint anthony actually! i had my very specific set of saints as a kid and then i Stopped Believing In God so i know other saints only through brief mentions (though i do remember hearing that he was good for praying to when you'd lost something! maybe when i was going through our book of saints looking for a confirmation name). you're so right though there's something so poetic about reaching out to a figure held up in divinity above all else and only below god and asking them to help you find your keys. to point you toward where you left that letter you needed. for the divine to be domestic. smth about the safety of saints... god is not to be invoked except in dire need and even then all defaults to his plan for you. saints come down from the heavens for a moment to take your hand and lead you back to the necklace that you thought you lost all those years ago. lives in my head forever and ever. (can't remember if i put this line in the quiz??? but i wrote smth in the poem i chose lines from about how a saint comes down through the rays of light from the stained glass windows to hold your hand... same feeling.) and god. yeah. the way they handed us those stories of extreme suffering as if it would do nothing to us... for a second, i thought philomena was in my childhood book of saints, since her story sounded familiar, but i went to look on internet archive and she wasn't there; p sure who i was thinking about was saint agnes, whose story is very similar.
Tumblr media
(her page was also right across from saint sebastian, so i'm sure i read her story more often than the others, when i went back for my constant visits with him.)
really though, saint philomena and saint agnes and saint maria goretti... how many catholic kids were just presented with stories of awful suffering, often of people not much older than them? st. tarcisius is another saint that i was a teensy bit fixated on as a kid (not as much as sebastian and cecilia) but the entirety of his story is that he was a boy carrying the host in the streets of rome and when he refused to give it up to a gang of men, he was beaten to death. i would go back and read his little passage over and over again. there's a miracle within that story, but really... the stories of martyrs are So Much of what makes me the way i am now. guarantee.

"Blessed Saints Sebastian and Tarcisius and you other martyrs of the early church, pray for us. You who challenged and resisted the claims of mundane human power, stand by us. Our eyes are fixed on your beauty. Give us courage and fortitude. Enfold us in your nakedness. Soak us in your redemptive blood. As we stand before the cruel Caesars of this era, may we turn to you for strength and eloquence. And may your deeds be part of the stories of our lives. Amen."

Thinking about how all these young saints are also Eucharistic saints.
Imelda Lambertini, who died of joy after receiving the Eucharist.
Little Nellie, who was so desperate for Communion at the age of four that she would ask nuns who had recently received to kiss her so she could vicariously participate.
Carlo Acutis, who used to attend daily Mass and made the website for Eucharistic miracles
Tarcisius of Rome, who allowed himself to be beaten to death rather than hand the Sacrament over to Roman authorities.

Saint Tarcisius
3rd Century
Feast Day: August 15
Patronage: Altar Servers and First Holy Communicants
The feast day for St. Tarcisius in the Roman Martyrology is August 15, the same day as the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Tarcisius is said to have been about 12 years old when he was beaten to death by a mob rather than deliver to them the Blessed Sacrament, which he was carrying to prisoners awaiting martyrdom under Valerian. He went instead of a priest because he was less recognizable. Legend is, that in spite of killing Tarcisius, those thugs were unable to pry open his hands to get control of the Body of Christ. Only later, when his body was returned to a priest, could the Eucharist be easily taken from his dead hands.

December 15 is the feast day of Blessed János Brenner priest and martyr
Tumblr media
János Brenner was born on 17 December 1931 in the Vas province as the second of three children. His two brothers also became priests.
Brenner began his novitiate in 1950 with the Cistercians at Zirc and took the religious name "Anasztáz" (Anastasius: Greek for Resurrection). But a few months after, he had to interrupt his monastic formation when the communist regime began to suppress all religious houses in Hungary.  On 19 June 1955, Janos was ordained to the priesthood in the diocesan cathedral of Szombathely by Bishop Sándor Kovács.
Brenner's first assignment was to be a chaplain in St. Gotthard,a parish which had over previous centuries been in Cistercian care. After the communists made personal threats against the enthusiastic and idealistic chaplain, his bishop offered to send Brenner elsewhere, but he said, "I'm not afraid" and affirmed his desire to remain where he was.
Around midnight on 15 December, 1957 (Brenner was preparing his sermon for 16 December) he was called to give last rites to a supposedly ill man in a neighboring town; he failed to realize that it was a trap. The 17-year-old boy who summoned him had been known to Brenner as an altar server. The young priest took anointing oils and the Eucharist with him in his bag. He was soon ambushed in the woods and stabbed 32 times. He was found dead that morning with the Eucharist still in his hands, earning him the title "Hungarian Tarcisius" since he died in similar circumstances to Tarcisius.
Brenner was interred in the family vault in the Salesian church of Saint Quirinus on 18 December. The authorities made a failed attempt to disperse the crowd at his funeral. His ordination motto, taken from Romans 8:28, was inscribed on the tomb: "All things work together for good to those who love God."
Pope Francis confirmed that Brenner died as a victim "in odium fidei" (in hatred of the faith). On 8 November 2017, the pontiff approved the priest's beatification. The solemn liturgy took place on 1 May 2018, in Szombathely's City Park.
