Even as some of Moon’s most famous initiatives, such as the Washington Times newspaper and media ventures in many other countries, lost money, the church could count on its Japanese arm to produce a strong revenue flow based primarily on what it called “spiritual sales.”
Church members in Japan “would scan the obituaries and knock on people’s doors and tell them that ‘your dead loved one has communicated with us and they want you to go to your bank and send money to the Unification Church so that your loved one can be elevated in the spirit world,’ ” Steve Hassan, a onetime Unification Church member who became a mental health counselor and author of books about destructive cults, said Saturday.
Despite the church’s roots in Korea, it was Japan that traditionally provided as much as 70 percent of the church’s wealth, according to historians who have studied the church. A former high-ranking Japanese church member once told The Post that Moon’s organizations had brought $800 million from Japan into the United States from the mid-1970s to the mid-80s.
“Moon sent bags of cash, big fat bags, stacks and stacks of hundreds, from Korea and Japan to Manhattan Center,” one of the church’s primary properties in New York City, a former Unification executive, Ron Paquette, told The Post in 1997. “Whenever we asked where the money was coming from, the answer was it just came ‘from Father,’ ” the term church members used for Moon.

Akihiko Kurokawa, the leader of a small political party in Japan, the NHK Party, said on a TV broadcast last month that the Unification Church was “an anti-Japanese cult” and blamed Abe’s grandfather, former prime minister Nobusuke Kishi, for the church’s initial move into Japan in 1958. Moon started his first newspaper in Japan in 1975 and brought his signature mass marriages of followers to the country soon thereafter.
In Moon’s theology, his native Korea is the “Adam” country, home of a master race destined to rule the world, and Japan is the “Eve” country, subservient to Korea, Hassan said. The Unification Church taught that Eve had had sexual relations with Satan, leading mankind to fall from grace, with Moon now appointed to bring humanity to salvation.
Saw a claim that Japanese Moonies are required to tithe 3x the amount Koreans and Americans are, haven’t any corroboration though.

Narrator: “Yesterday the body of a 21-year-old Korean male was found on a casino skywalk after apparently falling 17 floors. A hotel guest spotted the body shortly after dawn. He had checked in the previous day around 8am. It sure looks like suicide.”
Narrator: “In the press the young man’s death stirred barely a ripple of interest – until it emerged who he was. He lived on a palatial estate. His father was famous – a modern day messiah.”
Seoul, South Korea
Bo Hi Pak (special assistant to Moon): “He is a great teacher. He is a great prophet, and the messiah.”
Antonio Betancourt (Unification Church): “We see him as the lord of the universe, the first person coming as God’s representative.”
Narrator: “A convicted felon, he controls wealth beyond imagination.”
Allen Tate Wood (ex senior member): “At the heart of Moon’s psyche is the drive, the need for power.”
1:00 Narrator: “He thinks he can literally buy countries?”

Allen Tate Wood: “They are given a kendo stick, and the woman has to bend over and the man hits her three times as hard as he can with the kendo stick.”
Narrator: “He crusaded against communism.”
Bo Hi Pak: “Who did liberate communism? To me, [it is] very clear. It’s the Rev. Moon.”
Narrator: “His stated aim is world domination.”
Donna Collins (ex follower): “You have to be prepared to die for him, and he says that.”

2:00 Narrator: “He is Sun Myung Moon, leader of the Moonies”

Allen Tate Wood: “He’d clap his hands and he’d say: ‘Where I am going is to the Kingdom of Heaven, and I want you to come with me, all of those of you who want to come with me, come ahead. The rest of you, out of my way.’”
Allen Tate Wood: “One of the things they say in their prayers is ‘Crush Satan, Out Satan, Crush Satan, Out Satan.’ Oh, it was tremendously exciting. These were the end times. These were the ‘Last Days’ and we had the great blessing to be on the side of the son of God. I loved him, I adored him.”
Antonio Betancourt: “It is an awesome feeling when you are near him. You feel in the presence of an enormous power.”
Allen Tate Wood: “This is a man who is going towards his destiny regardless of what anybody else thinks, says or does.”
3:02 Narrator: “Moon says that from soon after his birth in 1920, in a village in North Korea, he was clairvoyant and could see the future. His legend is strange and fascinating. At age 15, his followers believe, he walked up into the mountains one Easter morning to pray. There were clouds tipped with gold. Jesus stepped out of the clouds.”
Bo Hi Pak: “Put his hands on his head, and the voice was very clear: ‘Now you are to take over my undone mission. I will be walking every step of the day with you.”
Narrator: “Moon protested he was unworthy, but Jesus insisted.” LINK
4:00 Bo Hi Pak: “To me, Rev Moon coming to this world is the second coming of Christ.”
Antonio Betancourt: “Well his power is greater than Jesus’ because Jesus is working with him, so two is better than one. And many people have seen this spiritually, when Rev Moon is speaking they see Jesus next to him.”
Narrator: “Then, his followers believe, other prophets appeared.”
Bo Hi Pak: “He met with Buddha, met with Mohammed, met with Confucius. He had many, many incredible spiritual encounters.”
Narrator: “So Jesus and the Rev Moon are working together?”
Antonio Betancourt: “Absolutely, absolutely. But not only. Jesus is working with Rev Moon in America. In the Islam, it is Mohammed. In Asia it is Buddha.”
4:55 Narrator: “He came down from the mountain transformed. In his village Moon was supposed to have wisdom beyond his years. He was seen to wrestle trees on the hillside in a state of trance. Before World War II, Korea was under Japanese occupation. Koreans were ordered to follow the Japanese Shinto faith. Now nearly 20, Moon says his struggle was ‘not with the Japanese, it was with the devil.’”
5:40 Bo Hi Pak: “I have never seen any man so dedicated to God.”
Narrator: “Legend has it that at his home in Seoul, overwhelmed by the suffering of God, he would cry for days on end. Once his tears leaked into the room below. As Japan made ready for World War II, Moon went to Tokyo to study engineering.” [In that way he could avoid being drafted into the Japanese military.]

Narrator: “As Moon saw it, evil began in the Garden of Eden. Eve tasted the forbidden fruit. She had sex with Lucifer, the archangel. Then she had sex with Adam.”
Cesar Zaduski (Unification Church): “But for Rev Moon, it is quite clear there was a sex relationship. Why so? That is very simple, because what is the part of Adam and Eve they hide after that? If they had eaten some apple they would hide the mouth, but they hide the sexual parts.”

Narrator: “Ironically, Moon’s church was born out of suffering. After Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Japanese surrendered and pulled their troops out of Korea.”
Douglas MacArthur: “I now invite the representatives of the Emperor of Japan to sign the instrument of surrender.”
Narrator: “Now there was religious freedom in Korea. Back in Seoul, Moon got married. According to legend he told his wife he was going out to buy rice for their new baby. He never came back. God told him to go to North Korea – to preach.”
9:20 Bo Hi Pak: “His way of teaching, it was just simply fascinating. All the conventional questions [were] resolved automatically, like the snow melting.”
Narrator: “His belief that Korea had spawned a new messiah outraged many Christians.”
Bo Hi Pak: “Rev. Moon was accused as heretic.”
Narrator: “Worse still, Soviet troops were swarming into North Korea, stifling freedom of worship almost as soon as it began. Today Moon’s followers are told that he was framed by the new communist regime of Kim Il-sung – punished for speaking the word of God.”
Bo Hi Pak: “He was absolutely incredibly tortured by the communist police. Incredible. He was just virtually beaten to death.”
Narrator: “He was sent to North Korea’s Heungnam Death Camp.”
Narrator: “According to a later FBI report, the charge was bigamy.”
Bo Hi Pak: “None of the prisoners survived in that prison more that 18 months.”
10:15 Narrator: “In his book, Divine Principle, which lays out his theology, Moon says he endured suffering unimagined by anyone in history. He suffered so much he atoned for the sins of mankind and became perfect.”
Bo Hi Pak: “Rev Moon was sentenced to that death camp for five years imprisonment.”
Narrator: “In 1950 North Korea invaded the South. The cold war had begun, a long confrontation between the Soviets and the West. Perversely, the Korean War saved Moon’s life. UN bombers pounded the city where he was held. In the chaos Moon was freed.”
11:14 Bo Hi Pak: “The day before they were systematically killing all the prisoners, knowing that UN forces [were] coming up. Before [it was] Rev Moon’s turn, luckily the UN forces rushed the gate.” [Only the political prisoners were being executed. Moon was in jail for bigamy and was not due to be executed. The guards fled the camp, and that is how Moon became free.]
11:40 Narrator: “He joined thousands of refugees fleeing south to escape the communists. His followers speak with awe of how he carried an injured man across Korea.”
Bo Hi Pak: “Roughly 200 miles walking and walking in the mountains he carry him on [his] back. [An] 80kg man on [his] back, all the way to the south. To me, that alone shows him [to be] the messiah to me.” [Pak Chung-hwa, the man concerned, explained that he was only carried twice by Moon. Each time was for about 200-300 yards, and it was never through water – once it was up a mountain pass. He is interested in people finding him and kneeling to him, and bowing to him and then giving him all their strength, all their energy, all their power.”

Allen Tate Wood: “All of your money, somebody else’s money, their land, their property, any kind of real or material goods they have. Your job is to get a hold of that and bring it into the organization, because outside of the organization it has no meaning. It has no value. It is property owned by satan.”
Narrator: “Moon would talk openly of controlling the earth. [Moon’s words:] “The whole world is in my hands and I will conquer and subjugate the world.”

Narrator: “From the beginning Moon believed that rival churches, the media, even the Korean government, were out to get him.”
Bo Hi Pak: “Just like Jesus Christ came 2000 years ago, he encountered incredible opposition [in] those days [from] the existing religions.”
Narrator: “In Seoul in the 1950s there were stories that Moon was having sex with female converts, to purify them.”
Antonio Betancourt (Unification Church): “There were women coming to lectures, who – they’d rather be at lecture than being with their husbands or with their families – so the husbands could not understand what was going on. So for them they must be having some kind of sexual relationship. There must be something wrong. There must be something wrong that is going on in that place.”

Narrator: “The Korean War had ended in a bizarre face-off between North and South – surreal, yet deadly. It was a microcosm of what was happening all over the world. Moon was made by the new Cold War.”
Bo Hi Pak: “Rev Moon frequently said ‘The communist goal is to kick off God from the planet.’ The communistic ideology, if it takes over the entire world, then there is no room for God. We cannot allow God going out of this planet. We need God. Rev Moon from day one is truly an anti-communist.”
Narrator: “To Moon, communist North Korea was satanic, and its Stalinist leader, Kim Il-sung, the devil.”
Bo Hi Pak: “If communists win in the Cold War, and if the entire world is communized, then [there is] no room for free men to stand.”
18:00 Narrator: “In Seoul, nobody laughed at Moon anymore. The word now was that he had powerful new friends, including Kim Jong-pil founder of Korea’s ferocious new intelligence agency, the KCIA. It crushed dissent. In Washington, the Americans heard that Kim Jong-pil was using Moon’s church as a political tool. America was where Moon would make his future.”
Bo Hi Pak: “He looked at America as the chosen nation, so in the most crucial role [that] must get played by America.”
Narrator: “Rather fortunately for Moon, he arrived in America at a time of great anguish. The Vietnam war had divided the generations. American cities were full of teenagers looking for answers. Few knew why Americans were dying in Vietnam, or raining death on a country they had barely heard of. Moon built his church on their self doubt.”
Allen Tate Wood: “Here was a guy that just seemed to be just totally sure. There was just this tremendous energy, tremendous force which he communicated. It was as though his whole body was going to one place, to one point.

Narrator: “Teenagers would be intercepted on the street by Moonies. Often they would be invited to some innocuous seminar.”

Narrator: “Cathryn Mazer was taken to a house on Long Island.”
Cathryn Mazer: “The name ‘Rev Moon’ never came up. I actually asked when I was first going with them to the site, if they were the Unification Church, and I was told ‘no.’”

Cathryn Mazer: “Oh, I was encouraged to lie. I was asked to lie.”

Cathryn Mazer’s mother: “I want to see my daughter. I need to see somebody.”

Lawyer: “But you are not prepared to let Cathryn’s mother go in and see for herself.”

Mazer family: “Well if you can’t prove to us that she is not here, then why should we leave under the assumption that she is not here?”
Narrator: “She had been moved, but the Moonies wouldn’t say where.”

Cathryn Mazer: “I was sent out on the streets, sometimes for 14 or 16 hours at a time. Sometimes in very dangerous neighborhoods.”
Narrator: “Wandering big cities, Cathryn Mazer lives on hamburgers and donuts.”
Cathryn Mazer: “There were many, many times we were just on the side of basically a highway alone with hundreds of dollars of cash on our persons.”

And in this court it is as pompous, it is as beautiful as being in the presence of an earthly king, or queen, for example the Queen Elizabeth. It is not Hollywood. It is real. That is the court of the messiah, but after this is finished, he becomes a very, very ordinary man. He goes and digs his hands in the dirt. He examines pebbles. He goes into the mud. He goes and eats in McDonalds.”

Narrator: “The church claims that millions of couples have been blessed by Moon in ceremonies from Seoul to Washington, even at the 2000 room New Yorker Hotel, bought by Moon for a few million dollars.”
Robin Marsh (Unification Church): “He looked down into my eyes, and I felt that he knew everything about me. And then he guided me to where my wife was already standing. And he looked at us, and he just beckoned to us to go. We went to another room and discussed whether we would like to continue with this match. And I really felt that this was God’s choice. And I felt a lot of God’s happiness and joy at that time.”
Narrator: “Sometimes the matchings took a bizarre turn.”
Allen Tate Wood: “If they accept it and they come back in the room, the first thing that they do in their relationship is they are given a kendo stick. And the woman has to bend over and the man hits her three times as hard as he can with the kendo stick. And the audience then judges that. If they didn’t hit hard enough, the man has to hit her again, until the audience accepts the strength of the beating. Then the woman turns around and she beats the man. It is the same thing. So this is how these marriages made in heaven begin.”
Narrator: “Moon seems convinced of his own divinity.”
Donna Collins: “But he was kind of innocent in some way. I mean he was very like a child amid all these big important people.”
Narrator: “Donna Collins’ parents led the church in Britain.”

Narrator: “Moon seemed anything but sweet to church leader Allen Tate Wood, summoned to his home is South Korea. A man lay prostrate on the floor in front of the messiah.”

This man never raised his head off the ground. He was looking into the rug. Narrator: “The South Koreans believed that Moon had the power to influence events in Washington. And according to a CIA source, were willing to pay for his help. The source claimed the money had been channeled through a company in South Korea. Congressional investigators found that the head of Korean intelligence once held a meeting with Moon’s American leaders at a hotel in San Francisco.”
Bo Hi Pak: “The public and the media misunderstood him, and they thought Rev Moon is act upon Korean government front or Korean CIA front. He must be funded.”
Narrator: “By the mid seventies, Moon was at the pinnacle of his power, holding enormous rallies in American cities. The church claimed 300,000 people attended this rally in Washington.”

Allen Tate Wood: “His key strategy was, we will find some powerful man or some powerful organization, and we will find out what their agenda is, and we will attend them and serve them, and eventually they will come to recognize in us their greatest ally, and at that point we then begin to be able to dictate to them.”

Narrator: “On the Korean border Moon seemed to expect a bloody apocalypse, out of which he would emerge leader of a united Korea, and then of the world.”
Allen Tate Wood: “And he said in this final battle, the only way for the forces of good to win maybe to force the world to wake up. He said the way we will do that is we will send thousands and thousands of Unification Church members and place them on the border, on the Demilitarized Zone inbetween North and South Korea. And he said if the North Koreans attack then the Unification Church members will be the first people to be killed. If we can have a lot of young people killed who are from England, France, Germany, the United States that will force those nations to come in on the side of South Korea. He would talk to us for hours and hours and hours about how God is searching for a nation. He wants to get Korea, but if he can’t get Korea, then he will try to get the United States. If he can get the United States then he will get Japan. If he can get the United States and Japan and then England, if he can get those three nations that he will quickly grab seven. And once he has got seven, then he will swallow the whole world.”

Narrator: “In 1982 a young Korean girl arrived at Moon’s estate outside New York.”
Nansook Hong: “It was absolutey beautiful – big mansions, big rooms. The room that I stayed [in] it was like a princess’s room.”
Narrator: “Moon had chosen her to marry one of his sons. She was barely 15.”
Nansook Hong: “Every time we saw him we had to [do] full bows. He was God. He was really God for everybody.”

Nansook Hong: “There is [the] inside world and [the] outside world. There were outside people and there was us. We were the chosen people and [the] outside people are satanic people.”
Narrator: “She saw church leaders arriving from Asia with bags of cash for the Moons.”
Nansook Hong: “I saw sometimes a million dollars, sometimes two million dollars, sometimes $200,000 but for them it is really not a lot of money. It is for their own personal use.”
Narrator: “Publicly Moon railed against gambling, but Nansook says he took her and the rest of his entourage to Las Vegas. An assistant would place bets for him. Did you say to him, ‘Father, I thought we were supposed not to gamble.’”
Nansook Hong: “No, of course not. Haha. If I wanted to die, maybe. No. No, we never raised any questions or doubts. We just had to be there accepting.”
Narrator: “If Moon thought he was safe from earthly law, he was to be disillusioned. He was accused of tax evasion.”
Ron Paquette (former executive Moon organization): “Not paying your taxes, withholding payroll taxes, paying people under the table cash so that we didn’t have to pay the government money, that saved Father money, so therefore it was OK. It was doing God’s will beause anything that supported Moon, or supported the agenda, was doing God’s will.”

Nansook Hong: “We prayed on the holy rock every morning and so did a lot of us. We were there all night praying for Moon, but it seems like nothing worked.”
Narrator: “In 1984 Moon was sent to jail.”

Some time later, as he told the judge, he was grabbed by two men in a car who stuck a gun in his mouth. They said they had no connection with Moon, but warned him off. Even in his new haven, Moon was under fire.”

Narrator: “In Latin America Moon would spend millions. He said he ‘gave the bait to Uruguay, then the bigger fish of Argentina and Brazil kept their mouths open’.”
Narrator: “He thinks he can literally buy countries?”

Narrator: “Several countries did take the bait, including Brazil. In 1994 Moon bought a swath of its Pantanal region, a vast area known for its extraordinary beauty. Here would be the new Garden of Eden, where Moon would have absolute dominion.”
Cesar Zaduski (Unification Church farm manager in Brazil): “Rev Moon named it because he wants this place to be as pristine and as natural as it was in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve were created by Heavenly Father. And Rev Moon said that this area could be in the same shape like in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve were created.”
Narrator: “According to the church it would have an airport big enough for wide body jets and millions of acres of fertile land.”
Bo Hi Pak: “This is why he is engaged in millions and millions of acres in Brazil to cultivate those wasted lands into beautiful fertile farmland, producing millions of tons of tons of food.”
Narrator: “It would teach the Brazilians new farming methods, educate the area’s mainly Catholic population and unite religions. People on the farm hope that Moon, now in his 80s, will spend his last years in Brazil. From here he can communicate with his other 200 projects around the world.”

Going at three o’clock in the morning, with no reason except a compelling spiritual reason to go into places that nobody will go because they are not tame yet. Narrator: “To be near their messiah, Korean and Japanese Moonies are bused in after a gruelling flight from Asia.”
Cesar Zaduski: “And these families, living with the nature, they can learn the original aspects of God, that was lost after the Fall of Man.”
Narrator: “His followers fish like Father Moon, work on the land, pray and procreate in small air-conditioned rooms.”
Cesar Zaduski: “And for Rev Moon especially, this place is the place where the families should do what they were supposed to do in the Garden of Eden, and was done wrong – so we should do it right.”
Narrator: “Moon has other great dreams, like a road from London to Tokyo, but it is just a dream. At New Hope there is no airport for wide body jets. Its manager says it rains erratically so it is hard to grow crops. Despite Moon’s talk of uniting religions, local Catholics dismiss his creed as junk theology.”
Cesar Zaduski: “But it is quite clear that in the history of mankind, always someone who came with a big idea, or a new understanding was stoned, and after his death they made a big statue and proclaimed him as a saint. That always happens.”
Narrator: “Sealed inside his many fine houses, gazing out over tropical gardens or great oceans, Moon has had many sorrows. In 1989 a teenage son, Heung-jin, was killed in a car crash.”

Narrator: “But Moon can lay claim to one crowning achievement, a reconciliation with his old enemy, Kim Il-sung, the leader of North Korea. Moon agreed to invest millions in a country he once thought satanic.”

“Reverend Moon was freed [from jail] on August 20, 1985. …
At East Garden it was as though Father had returned from a world speaking tour and not from a prison term. The old rhythms returned. The meetings around his breakfast table resumed. But something was different. There was a perceptible shift in the Reverend Moon’s Sunday-morning sermons at Belvedere after his release from the penitentiary. He talked less and less about God and more and more about himself. He seemed obsessed with his vision of himself as some kind of historical figure, not merely as an emissary of God. Where once I had listened intently to his sermons in search of spiritual insight, I now found myself more uneasy and less engaged.
The Reverend Moon’s hubris culminated later that year in a secret ceremony in which he actually crowned himself and Hak Ja Han Moon as Emperor and Empress of the Universe. Preparations for the lavish, clandestine event at Belvedere took months and hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Church women were assigned to research the regal robes of the five-hundred-year Yi dynasty that ended in the nineteenth century. Others were ordered to design solid-gold-and-jade crowns modeled on the ones worn by tribal kings. My mother was in charge of buying yards and yards of silk and satin and brocade material and finding seamstresses in Korea to turn these expensive raw materials into the costumes of a royal court. All twelve of Sun Myung Moon’s children, all of his in-laws, all of his grandchildren, were to be outfitted as princes and princesses.
In the end Sun Myung Moon’s crowning ceremony looked less like a historical reconstruction than like a popular Korean television soap opera set during the Yi dynasty. I felt silly, as though I were dressed for a period comedy rather than a sacred religious service. The Reverend Moon was aware enough of how an act of such monumental egotism would be received by the world that he banned photographs from being taken at the actual ceremony. Invited guests, all high-level church officials, who arrived with cameras had them confiscated by security guards, who blocked the entrances to gate-crashers.
In his gold crown and elaborate robes, Sun Myung Moon looked to me for all the world like a modern-day Charlemagne. The difference was that this emperor bowed to no pope. Since there was no authority higher than the Reverend Moon, the Messiah had to crown himself Emperor of the Universe.
The coronation was a turning point for me and my parents. For the first time we voiced our doubts to one another about Sun Myung Moon. It was not an easy thing to do. Much has been written about the coercion and brainwashing that takes place in the Unification Church. What I experienced was conditioning. You are isolated among like-minded people. You are bombarded with messages elevating obedience above critical thinking. Your belief system is reinforced at every turn. You become invested in those beliefs the longer you are associated with the church. After ten years, after twenty years, who would want to admit, even to herself, that her beliefs were built on sand?
I didn’t, surely. I was part of the inner circle. I had seen enough kindness in the Reverend Moon to excuse his blatant lapses — his toleration of his son’s behavior, his hitting his children, his verbal abuse of me. Not to excuse him was to open my whole life up to question. Not just my life. My parents had spent thirty years pushing aside their own doubts. My father tolerated the arbitrary way in which Sun Myung Moon ran his businesses, inserting unqualified friends and relatives into positions of authority, promoting those who curried favor and firing those who displayed any independence. My father survived at the top of Il Hwa pharmaceuticals by accepting the Reverend Moon’s frequent public humiliations. For his part, the Reverend Moon left my father in place because Il Hwa continued to make money for him.
If the deification of Heung Jin and the crowning ceremony tested my faith, the emergence of the Black Heung Jin nearly destroyed it. …”

There will be an ensemble exploring the history of black sound, including Yaw Agyeman, Kiara Lanier, Ben LaMar Gay, Joshua Abrams, ADaD, Charles "Rick" Heath IV, Chris Paquette, and Corey Wilkes. Plus, Peter CottonTale (Chance the Rapper’s musical director) curates a gospel-inspired set, including The JuJu Exchange, Ron Poindexter, and Jay Arnold.

We interviewed the great Cincinnati rock band Wussy around the release of last year’s What Heaven Is Like; since then, they’ve released a covers EP, and lead singer Chuck Cleaver’s dropped his solo debut. NHL Expansion Draft 2021: Full list of players available for Seattle Kraken
The NHL announced the protected lists for the 30 teams involved in the NHL Expansion Draft. (Vegas is exempt.) With the names of those protected come the guys who could be snatched up by the Seattle Kraken.
There are a number of big names that have everyone trying to figure out just what general manager Ron Francis will do. Will he take Canadiens netminder, and future Hall of Famer, Carey Price and his hefty cap hit? Is Vladimir Tarasenko the sniper he needs or is his health a big question mark? There's also a number of guys who would fit in nicely but are free agents and the chances of signing them are not high (i.e. Alex Ovechkin).

Announcing Winners WGA Awards 2019: ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?,’ ‘Eighth Grade’
In a pair of upsets, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” has won the Writers Guild of America’s adapted screenplay award for Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty and Bo Burnham has won the original screenplay award for “Eighth Grade.”
The major television trophies went to “The Americans,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Homeland” and “Barry” for the 71st Writers Guild Awards, held at dual ceremonies at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif., and the Edison Ballroom in New York City. It was the last major awards show before the Feb. 24 Academy Awards.
“Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” based on the memoir of the late Lee Israel, topped the screenplays for “Black Panther,” “If Beale Street Could Talk” “A Star Is Born”; and “BlacKkKlansman.” Though the script for the comedy-drama — the story of how Israel discovered her talent for forgery — has received an Oscar nomination, “Beale Street” and “BlacKkKlansman” were regarded as the front-runners. It appears that the tale of the travails and redemption of a professional writer clearly resonated with Hollywood writers.
“I want to thank Lee,” Holofcener said in her acceptance. “She’d probably be sitting in the room judging all of us. She though she was the smartest person in the room and she probably was.”
A stunned Burnham credited star Elsie Fisher for his winning the WGA award. Burnham won over Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma”; Adam McKay’s “Vice”; Bryan Woods, Scott Beck, and John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place”; and Peter Farrelly, Nick Vallelonga, and Brian Currie’s “Green Book.” “Roma,” “Vice” and “Green Book” are all nominated for Academy Awards along with “The Favourite” and “First Reformed” while “Eight Grade” did not receive an Oscar nod.
“Eighth Grade,” which stars Fisher as an awkward teen dealing with the final week of eighth grade, also won the first-time Directors Guild of America Award for Burnham on Feb. 2. The film is also up for four Spirit Awards on Feb. 23.
“To the other nominees in the category — Have fun at the Oscars, losers!” Burnham joked in his acceptance. “No, I prepared nothing. This all belongs to Elsie Fisher who performed the script. No one would care about the script if she hadn’t done it.”
“Eighth Grade” is the first film to win the WGA Original Screenplay award without being nominated for an Academy since Michael Moore’s “Bowling for Columbine” in 2003.
“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” won the comedy series award for Kate Fodor, Noah Gardenswartz, Jen Kirkman, Sheila Lawrence, Daniel Palladino and Amy Sherman Palladino. Starring Rachel Brosnahan, “Mrs. Maisel” won the Emmy for best comedy series last year.
The final season of “The Americans” took the drama series award for Peter Ackerman, Hilary Bettis, Joshua Brand, Joel Fields, Sarah Nolen, Stephen Schiff, Justin Weinberger, Joe Weisberg and Tracey Scott Wilson.
Bill Hader and Alec Berg won the episodic comedy award for the opening segment of HBO’s “Barry,” “Chapter One: Make Your Mark” (“Barry”). They also won the new series award.
Stephanie Gillis won the animated award for the “Bart’s Not Dead” episode of “The Simpsons” — which was just renewed for its 31st and 32nd seasons by Fox — and showrunner Alex Gansa took the episodic drama award for the “Paean To The People” segment of “Homeland.” “Bathtubs Over Broadway” took the documentary award and “God of War” won the videogame trophy.
Hulu’s “Castle Rock” won the long-form original award and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” took the adapted long-form trophy. “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” won the comedy-variety series cagtegory.
Chelsea Peretti hosted the West Coast ceremonies while Roy Wood Jr. was the emcee in New York. “All the glitz and glamor of the Oscars without the pressure of public interest,” Peretti said in her intro.
Jordan Peele’s horror-comedy “Get Out” won the WGA Award for original screenplay and James Ivory’s coming-of-age drama “Call Me by Your Name” won for adapted screenplay last year. Both went on to win the Oscar.
The WGA awards are mixed indicator of Oscar sentiment. Six of the last 10 WGA winners have gone on to win Academy awards over the past five years. The awards are decided in voting by the 17,000 members of the WGA.
The West Coast ceremonies included plenty of political commentary. Adam McKay, on receiving the WGA’s Paul Selvin Award for “Vice,” asked for a “beat of silence” for the million people who died during the invasion of Iraq.
Jenji Kohan, recipient of the Paddy Chayefsky Award, was unable to attend due to having to shoot the final episode of “Orange Is the New Black.” She said in a taped message: “I’ve been incredibly lucky to work with enormously funny and kind people. I love the people I work with. Life is too short to work with a******s, by the way. That’s my Public Service Announcement.”

KidSuper AW22 “The MisAdventures of KidSuper” Paris Fashion Week I often get told: “You need a TV Show.” Most of the time it is for a reality show, but I wanted to take a stab at trying to make my own show. Inspired by my own experience and the KidSuper AW22 collection I am proud to present the MisAdventures of KidSuper!!! This was a such a crazy undertaking from trying to produce a whole collection, write a script, cast a group of friends, and bring this vision to life. This was an unrealistic deadline to start with and many people told me we should wait. But you only learn and grow from taking the leap, I have never done a film project where I have learned more. I know I said that this would be an annual thing, and I’ll try to keep this on schedule, and I’ll try to post these on time, and I know I’m posting the one for 2017 as 2018 comes to an end… but writing this took a backseat as I had to finish some projects and write a thesis. C'est la vie, as the French say.
Welcome to EVENT BATTLE 2017, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for sticking around.
Last time we had what I called a Triple Threat Match: DC vs Marvel vs Valiant. While I was hoping this would be a trend going forward, Valiant Comics took a break from publishing big summer crossover events this year. They’ll be back for the 2018 edition of Event Battle, though. (Side note: I absolutely adore Valiant’s quality over quantity strategy, and I hope it continues despite the recent setbacks.)
So, back to the heavyweights, then?
2017 saw DC Comics handing over their universe to the most successful team off their New 52 experiment, Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo (of the Batman fame), in the form of METAL, or Dark Nights: Metal. While Metal is indeed a continuation of Snyder and Capullo’s run on Batman, it does build itself up on the shoulders of giants. Peter Milligan and Kieron Dwyer’s “Dark Knight, Dark City” being one, Grant Morrison’s seminal run on Batman, Final Crisis, his The Multiversity stuff, and pretty much the entirety of his DC output is some of the few important stories from the past that the creators wove into theirs. However, although Metal leans on and borrows from a lot of stories (like most modern superhero stories do), it does not make them a required reading. You will easily find your way if you have never read “Dark Knight, Dark City” (you should, though) and don’t know who or what Barbathos is. Metal is that accessible to new readers. If you are a long-time reader and know your comics, however, it is oddly satisfying when you catch a reference.
Like I mentioned earlier, Metal brings back Barbathos, the bat daemon occultists in 1776 (including the third President of the United States of America!) tried summoning with their “Ceremony of the Bat”. Bruce Wayne, because of his connection to both the Wayne family and, well, I guess, bats in general, is revealed to be the host for Barbathos’ return. To act as the portal/host for the daemon, Wayne needs to be exposed to five divine metals. It is revealed later that Batman already has been exposed to most of them in previous storylines (Electrum in “Court of Owls”, Dionesium in “Endgame”, Promethium in “Superheavy”, Nth Metal in the prologue of the event with Dark Nights: Casting and Dark Nights: Forge , and finally, Batmanium during the course of this story). The daemon, of course, has evil intentions. It is bringing with itself the “dark multiverse”. It literally wants to sink the Earth and flip the scales.
Oh, and also, it is bringing with itself the twisted versions of Batman… who kinda do look awfully similar to Dark Judges from Judge Dredd?
As you can imagine, much of the story then follows Batman and the Justice League’s attempt at stopping Barbathos and his horde of mercenaries. Metal is filled to the brim with ridiculously absurd and deliciously fun moments throughout. While I did stick with my rule of not reading the tie-ins for events, I did read those that Snyder co-wrote, and they work quite well with the main story. They offer details to the story as you would expect from a tie-in but if you do choose to follow the main book only, you would be good.
While bigger, louder, more ridiculous seems to Snyder’s modus operandi for every story after “Zero Year”, it just kinda works here. Rarely does the story pauses and the characters get a chance to breathe. Even the dialogues are written in such a way that they service the plot forward and not add any depth to the characters themselves. While this does seem to continue on his Justice League run, what I do appreciate here is how he managed to adapt and extend previous stories and add more layers to the cosmic side of the DC Universe, which I have always felt falls a bit short when compared to Marvel. Apart from Darkseid and the New Gods, there’s not much else to it, is there? (Cue fans telling me off in 3… 2… 1…)
Greg Capullo draws every issue of Metal, front to back. This in itself is unheard of for modern superhero crossover events, but that’s not all. The man knocks it out of the park throughout. From huge action splash pages to an eight panel page of a tightly choreographed fight scene, Capullo works his magic throughout. Joining him on the tie-ins are John Romita Jr., Andy Kubert, Jim Lee, Doug Mahnke, Yanick Paquette, Jorge Jiménez, Riley Rossmo, Howard Porter, Bryan Hitch, Mikel Janín, and a host of talented inkers and colourists. While on some scenes in the tie-ins, the transitions between the artists is not subtle and it feels a bit off, the books are a sight to behold. If Jorge Jiménez’s work on Superman, Super-Sons, etc. didn’t inform you, the guy is a superstar.
Marvel, on the other hand, had a rough year. I’m talking about the comic book side of the business, of course. They seem to be doing just fine everywhere else.
SECRET EMPIRE is the continuation of Nick Spencer’s Captain America run, specifically his ‘Hydra Cap’ storyline. You know, the one that caused so much outrage. I wasn’t following his run then, but reading this event now, I learnt that (spoiler alert:) that man is that controversial panel actually is Steve Rogers. While the story very firmly establishes that it is not an LMD, not a clone, not a shape-shifter, etc., that man is still not our Captain America. Something is a bit off – specifically, Rogers gets his history rewritten by a sentient cosmic cube – and this leads to an interesting “What If?” storyline, almost.
Yes, Captain America is a Hydra agent. The bad guys have won. America is under Nazi rule (Which, is not that different from the current state of things, is it?). Spencer’s plays with this idea throughout the story, drawing parallels between the two. For example, the persecution of the Inhumans in the make-believe world is drawn from the persecution of the Jews in the real, and so on. While the story is not that epic in scale as Metal perhaps is, it does work as a summer blockbuster crossover event story regardless. Spencer also smartly limits the active cast. New York is put under a blackout, so half the Marvel superheroes are off the table and a shield around Earth has locked out heavy-hitters like Captain Marvel and such. This makes it easier to follow the action. Not that I doubt Spencer’s ability to write a large cast (he does exactly that so expertly here) or that I doubt the reader’s ability to read a book with a large cast. A smaller cast works here, because unlike Metal, for example, this is not a story about the heroes trying to stop the bad guys from winning. They have won already. It is up to a handful of rebels to overthrow the regime Reich.
The first and the last issue of the story is drawn by Steve McNiven, and rest of the work is divided among Rod Reis, Daniel Acuña, Andrea Sorrentino, Joshua Cassara, Leinil Francis Yu, Sean Izaakse, Joe Bennett, Ron Lim, Paco Medina, …holy shit that’s a lot of artists. To their credit though, the editorial team does manage to avoid any art inconsistencies. The story follows the one artist per issue rule to the dot, or a specific artist(s) sticks with a particular plotline. Steve McNiven hyper-detailed art sets up the mood perfectly in the beginning and that exposition is perfect for the end. Andrea Sorrentino, I think, handles a major portion of the book. His panel structure and innovative use of the borders and the gutters is fantastic.
THE VERDICT
To be honest, this was the hardest it has been in quite some time to pick one of the two. Usually, I like one book over the other a lot. Infinity over Forever Evil, Original Sin over Futures End, Secret Wars over Convergence, Rebirth over Civil War II and 4001 A.D. This year, I thought both worked quite well in their own regard. Neither of them is perfect by any means. There are some gaping holes in the plot of both stories. Dream appearing in Metal to add a convenient layer of exposition to an ‘oh my god, how are they ever going to do it?’ plot, The Punisher and Thor kinda turning Nazis with little to no conviction in Secret Empire, and so on. Nonetheless, I had a good time reading them, and that’s all that matters on some days.
While both Metal and Secret Empire had some lasting impact in their respective universe, most of what was caused by Secret Empire has been hushed over. This is partially, I think, because of all the (unnecessary) outrage it caused. Metal, on the other hand, boosted sales, launched new series, spun new tales. I had so much fun reading that book. And oh, how could I ever forget baby Darkseid doing the devil’s horns?

North Korea, despite a shattered economy and a populace suffering from widespread hunger, has outlived repeated forecasts of its imminent demise. Charles K. Armstrong contends that a major source of North Korea’s strength and resiliency, as well as of its flaws and shortcomings, lies in the poorly understood origins of its system of government. He examines the genesis of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) both as an important yet rarely studied example of a communist state and as part of modern Korean history.
North Korea is one of the last redoubts of “unreformed” Marxism-Leninism in the world. Yet it is not a Soviet satellite in the East European manner, nor is its government the result of a local revolution, as in Cuba and Vietnam. Instead, the DPRK represents a unique “indigenization” of Soviet Stalinism, Armstrong finds. The system that formed under the umbrella of the Soviet occupation quickly developed into a nationalist regime as programs initiated from above merged with distinctive local conditions. Armstrong’s account is based on long-classified documents captured by U.S. forces during the Korean War. This enormous archive of over 1.6 million pages provides unprecedented insight into the making of the Pyongyang regime and fuels the author’s argument that the North Korean state is likely to remain viable for some years to come.

Disciplining the Mind
In the North Korean surveillance regime, social discipline was ideally not something to be imposed by outside regulation and coercion. Discipline was to be internalized through self-examination and reform at the individual level, and “thought struggle“ leading to “thought unification“ at the collective level, North Korean communism shared with its counterparts in China and Vietnam, as well as (with a different ideological content) prewar militarist Japan, a strong emphasis on drawing the wayward individual into political conformity through reeducation and reform rather than physical coercion and punishment. The most dramatic example of this was the public ritual of “‘self-criticism” (cha-a pi’p’an or chagi pip’an).
Originally a Soviet technique, self-criticism was used to a much greater degree by the North Koreans and Chinese, and became well-known in the West during the Korean War as part of communist “brainwashing.” It may be that in cultures deeply influenced by neo-Confucian notions of the innate goodness and spiritual malleability of human beings, all deviants are in theory capable of being reformed through self-reflection and reeducation. Self-criticism was the public expression of this reform, through which the genuinely repentant individual could be reintegrated into the community. Its quasi-religious nature has often been noted, although the public nature of self-criticism is much more like evangelical Protestant “testimony” than Catholic confession.
What the Korean communists called “thought unity“ (sasang t’ongi’l), or what the American observers in their characteristic fashion called “totally conditioned public opinion,” was a theme the state and every social organization in North Korea constantly stressed. This stress on ideological conformity derived not only from Soviet influences, but also was clearly resonant with the relentless “thought policing” of the late colonial period, albeit with a very different political content. The North Korean regime put enormous resources into propaganda, as we have seen in the previous chapter, both to encourage support for the regime as well as to uproot subversive ideas that might aid the Americans and the South Korea agents who were suspected behind every corner. Thought had to be free of all reactionary taint and politically pure. The undisciplined mind was a thing to be feared.
Disciplining the Body
One final object of discipline stressed in the North Korean literature was the human body. Immediately Following the creation of the DPRK, there was a considerable emphasis on hygiene, sports, and physical purity. The individual had a duty to perfect his physical condition in order to strengthen the society and better serve the state. In particular, there was an emphasis on large, coordinated group sporting events, the precursors of the “mass games” that would in later years be a hallmark of North Korean entertainment for visiting foreign delegations. In North Korea of the 1940s, images abounded of parades of young athletes carrying flags, group calisthenics, and public drills celebrating holidays and events of all kinds. This too had a resonance not only with the Soviet Union and other communist societies, but also prewar Japan and, further afield, the mass-mobilizing states of Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany.
The extent to which society was portrayed as an organic unit to which the individual contributed his entire physical and spiritual being, in which “all hearts beat as one” (to use a later North Korean phrase) was probably closest to Imperial Japan. But, as John Dower has pointed out, the Japanese government chose to portray such a rigid image of national unity precisely because many feared that the masses did not share in the virtues the state espoused. The state seemed to be attempting to create a sense of unity and political cohesion in part through the active involvement of the individual in public, physical displays of bodily conformity. These would not be the “docile bodies” that Foucault refers to, but “active bodies” moving in choreographed unity, sports reflecting the indivisible purpose of the nation in all areas of politics, economics, and culture.
The well-trained individual body was a synecdoche of, and a prerequisite for, a well-functioning body politic. Both had to be disciplined, strong, and determined. The inaugural issue of Inmin ch’eyuk (People’s Physical Education) in February 1949 proclaimed that physical training “will help realize complete national unification and democratic development.” Physical education was the “firm foundation” of the people’s economic development and the defense of the Fatherland. Although there were already more than 60,000 members of 11,208 athletic groups in the North, there was still a need to “permeate physical education more broadly among the people,” to replace the antiquated Japanese physical education system, and to educate all people in the workplace, farm, and school to become good comrades. Everywhere the nation was supposed to walk in step, both literally and figuratively.
Internalizing Security
After the creation of the Democratic People’s Republic in 1948, the North Korean documents show an increasing concern with external dangers to the nation and social discipline appears increasingly militarized. Although references to “reactionary elements” and “national traitors” within North Korea diminishes, criticism of reaction and national betrayal is increasingly focused on South Korea and talk of “defending the Fatherland” ( chogukk powi ) escalates. At the same time, there is a move away from the negative elimination of “bad elements” to the positive creation of “thought unity” within the party and local People’s Committees and the spiritual and physical training of individuals, all linked in turn to the defense of and integration into the state that represents the “national subject,” the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. There is, in short, an unbroken continuum from the internal discipline of the individual to the external defense of the nation.
Local counties and villages were linked to the national security/military complex through the Self-Defense Units ( chawidae ), supervised by the Procurator’s Office, which was in turn part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Self-policing institutions were a common feature of traditional Korean villages, but it was the Japanese colonial authorities who first linked these organizations effectively to the centralized police forces and the state.86 The North Korean state also drew on this system of local self-defense, but the social hierarchy was reversed: rather than being headed by the village elders, held in respect due to their age and perhaps a modicum of Confucian education, the local Self-Defense Units were run by local peasants who were generally both poor and young. In the village of Tongmyon in South P’yong’an, for example, most of the twenty Self-Defense Unit members employed in the local police substation were in their early thirties, all were poor peasants, and two were women.87
The responsibilities of the Self-Defense Units were broad, including the dissemination of state policy (including foreign policy), protection against “infiltration of reactionary elements,” and security from fire and theft.88 At the first meeting of the Tongmyon Self-Defense Unit in October 1949, the members promised to “work for the benefit and productivity of the local people,” to “expose and smash reactionaries and puppets and their helpers,” and above all to “overcome all difficulties and discipline ( hullyonhada )” themselves “for obedience to the demands of the state.”89

One zookeeper with 27 years’ experience publicly slammed the invitation, saying that not a single zoo staffer he spoke with supported giving Pacelle a platform.
Pacelle has been desperately trying to convince zoo and aquarium directors that he’s not anti-zoo (a tall task, since he is). This week, Pacelle tries to bolster his credentials by asserting he “gave a keynote at a conference hosted by the Detroit Zoo that brought together animal welfare leaders, zoo leaders, and scientists to talk about advancing animal welfare” earlier this year.
That’s not what the event looks like to us. But it is classic Pacelle and his PR machine.
The event was put on by the Detroit Zoo. We’ve written before about the zoo’s CEO, Ron Kagan, who was caught lying on his resume and who calls PETA an ally.
It turns out Kagan’s event was hardly some mainstream animal welfare symposium. The event was invite-only, excluding directors, animal care, and veterinary experts of major institutions from attending.
But who did get an invite? The participant list reveals a long roster of activists:
Delcianna Winders, a longtime PETA lawyer who now works at Harvard teaching “animal law.”
Marc Bekoff, a patron of the Captive Animals Protection Society, which is against zoos.
Lori Marino, an animal-rights activist who works with the Nonhuman Rights Project, which compares owning animals to enslaving humans. Animals “are persons or should be legally,” she claims.

That’s a whole lot of anti-zoo and animal-rights folks to have at a meeting to—supposedly—benefit zoos. But we don’t think that’s the bigger picture here.
The direction this is all going in is this: The animal rights crowd will go species by species to get animals out of zoos and aquariums, and it has a few allies in the zoo world like dishonest Ron Kagan to help them out.
For zoos, it has already started with getting rid of elephants. Kagan was one of the first to advocate for it back in 2004. From there it will go to great apes and big cats. It will mirror Pacelle’s recent comments about circuses—that even though elephants were gone, circuses “still had tigers and lions and other animals.” (Emphasis added.)
For aquariums, it will start with marine mammals—dolphins, belugas—and go on then fish. John Racanelli, an attendee at the Detroit meeting and head of the National Aquarium, recently announced he’s “retiring” his aquarium’s dolphins to a seaside enclosure.
Activists only need to get rid of the “charismatic megafauna” to harm zoos. Once the large, graceful animals that captivate the public are gone, it won’t matter if there are still spiders, snakes, and prairie dogs there. Once the most interesting animals are gone, public attendance—and thus public education—will decline, and zoos will lose revenue vital to their conservation efforts. Some will close their doors.
The species-by-species plan is in plain view for those with open eyes. The aforementioned Nonhuman Rights Project has announced its plans to go species by species to give legal “rights” to animals to, among other things, sue people. NhRP has sued in court to “liberate” chimpanzees under habeas corpus. Their stated goal is to expand it to other animals such as whales and dolphins. And HSUS just recently endorsed efforts by PETA to gain legal “personhood” for animals.
Meanwhile, HSUS and others will maintain in the media that zoos and aquariums are harmful to animals. They will attempt to drive down public support for the institutions—and as that happens, they will push legislation to restrict how zoos and aquariums can operate.
Of course they are also deceptively camouflaging themselves as “not anti-zoo”—per Pacelle’s statement above. However, it’s important to remember that Wayne Pacelle made false statements to a US Senate subcommittee. His entire business model at HSUS is built on deception. He’s as trustworthy as the character Littlefinger from Game of Thrones—a man always spinning silky deceits that manipulate people and further his own agenda.
All together, the Detroit symposium shows an alliance of people with a plan to destroy zoos and aquariums as we know them; a plan that involves legal, lobbying, and PR messages. Pacelle’s next turn at bat will be before the AZA annual meeting. He will once again use his appearance to suggest his mainstream credentials as he operates behind the scenes to destroy the institutions he is addressing.
