Like this Balakbakan tree that is home to a family of Dulungan!
Dulungan parents work together to raise their chick. They use holes in large trees for nests, and seal them with fruit and animal matter, leaving a small hole big enough to pass food from the Dulungan dad to the Dulungan mom inside.
Haribon scientists like David Quimpo wait for days to observe this and other behavior. Their studies help local communities and governments make the necessary plans and policies to protect both forests and people.
The province of Antique in Panay declared August as Dulungan Month since 2020. Support organizations such as the Philippine Initiative for Conservation of Environment & the People (PhilinCon) and the Haribon Foundation to help conserve Dulungan and the forests we share with them. Dulungan is known internationally as the Rufous-headed Hornbill (饾槞饾槱饾槩饾槪饾槬饾槹饾樀饾槹饾槼饾槼饾槱饾槳饾槸饾樁饾槾 饾樃饾槩饾槶饾槬饾槮饾槸饾槳).

Upper left is the聽 (Kabog), Pteropus vampyrus lanensis that is near threatened, upper right is the聽 (Talarak), Rhabdotorrhinus waldeni critically endangered, lower left is the Visayan Spotted Deer聽 (Usa), Rusa alfredi, that is already considered endangered and the last one is the Visayan Warty Pig聽 (Baboy talunon), Sus cebifrons negrinus聽 that is considered critically endangered.聽

Scientific Name: Rhabdotorrhinus Waldeni
Conservation Status: Critically Endangered
Rofous feeds on fruits and disperse seeds all over the forest. They play an important role in forest regeneration. However hornbills and becoming very rare especially this species. A combination of deforestation and hunting have resulted in an extremely rapid population decline. Conservation measures, especially on Panay, offers hope for this species to recover.

The Dulungan hornbill (Rhabdotorrhinus waldeni) can only be found on Panay island, though a few can be seen in captivity on Negros. It is one of the two most endangered hornbills in the world. The other being the Sulu hornbill. #filipieces

August is also Dulungan Month!
The Dulungan or Rhabdotorrhinus waldeni is one of two most threatened hornbills in the world. They can only be found in Negros and Panay.
