Secretary Blinken and Foreign Minister Abdul Momen Pre-Meeting
SECRETARY BLINKEN: Well, good afternoon, everyone.
It’s a pleasure to have Foreign Minister Momen here with us today at the State Department, and important to take account of the fact that the relationship between Bangladesh and the United States has grown tremendously over the last 50 years – economically, our people-to-people ties, work that we’ve been doing more recently on everything from climate to health, which we very much value.
And we also deeply appreciate Bangladesh’s remarkable generosity to more than 1 million Rohingya refugees that they have been taking care of.
We’re committed to continuing to work together, to find ways to strengthen and deepen the relationship, to address as well economic development and human rights.
And of course, we’re looking – the world is looking – to Bangladesh for its next elections, to make sure that they set a strong example for free and fair elections for the region and for the world.
But Abdul, welcome. It’s very good to have you here.
FOREIGN MINISTER MOMEN: Thank you. Thank you, Secretary of State, for your invitation to meet you to strengthen our relationship between U.S. and Bangladesh and to solidify the relationship.
I am so thankful to you. And Bangladesh and USA has multifaceted, dynamic, and wide-ranging relationship. And over the last 50 years we have done really well, and we look forward to future 50 years.
Recently, when we were observing our 51st anniversary independence day, President Biden sent a very warm letter to our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. And he stated, and I quote,
“USA and Bangladesh achieved a lot together.”
He ended his letter with a very special word, and it is – the word is, Joy Bangla. Means, “Victory to Bangladesh.” It signifies our sacrifice of 3 million lives for our independence, for upholding democracy, human rights, justice, and human dignity.
We are thankful to President Biden, and our prime minister has also sent a letter to him which I shall hand over to you today.
Secretary Blinken, you also made a wonderful statement during our independence, and I would like to quote you.
You said,
“Bangladesh has many reasons to be proud . With a rapidly growing economy, an increasingly well-educated workforce, and a dynamic youth demographic, Bangladesh is quickly becoming a regional leader.”
You added,
“The United States is proud of its partnership with Bangladesh and of the resulting achievements made over the last five decades. Most , we have made real strides together battling COVID-19.”
I agree with you. You are also the – we need to all achieve with your support and active partnership, and we are proud of your partnership. And we look beyond in the future, so that we can have more better days in future.
I am here to develop, strengthen, and solidify our relationship. Thank you, Your Excellency.

So what if you do actually want to learn Dothraki or Valyrian? Of course, the ideal scenario would be to have an actual language exchange with a Dothraki warrior or a nobleman from Essos for Valyrian. High Valyrian is the language of the old Valyrian Freehold which was located on the eastern continent of Essos. Much of Essos was once dominated by the Valyrians for thousands of years, stretching from the Free Cities in the west, to Slaver's Bay in the east. High Valyrian is a language originating from Valyria and the Valyrian Freehold. Corrupted dialects known as bastard Valyrian are spoken in the Free Cities(1) and Slaver's Bay.(2)

History
Some of the oldest remaining ancient texts were written by Andals, Valyrians, Ghiscari, and Asshai'i.(3) After the Old Empire of Ghis was conquered by the Valyrian Freehold in the Ghiscari wars, the Ghiscari began speaking the High Valyrian of their conquerors.(4)
High Valyrian is no longer widely spoken due to the Doom of Valyria,(5) and most Valyrian records were destroyed in the catastrophe.(6) The tongues of the Free Cities have continued to evolve from the original High Valyrian.(5)

The word dracarys is translated as meaning 'dragonfire.'(20) Obsidian is called 'dragonglass' in the Common Tongue, but 'frozen fire' in High Valyrian.(21)Valonqar is the word for 'little brother.'(22) High Valyrian is the most likely source language for maegi (pronounced differently from 'Maggy'),(23) which means 'wise'.(24)
The Valyrian writing system, or at least a Valyrian writing system, is described as involving glyphs.(25) It was also probably standard practice to write on scrolls, and not in books.(26) The glyphs can also be inscribed, as on an old Valyrian dragon horn, which, when sounded, had 'every line and letter shimmering with white fire.'(27) Valyrian carvings have been found on obelisks.(28)
Valyrian steel is forged with spells, as well as hammers.(29) Some smiths still know them, although not entirely.(30)

The Valyrians most likely gave Valyrian names to their dragons, as the dragons Balerion, Meraxes, Vhagar, and Syrax were named after Valyrian gods and goddesses.(38)(39) However, not all dragons of House Targaryen had Valyrian names (e.g., Queen Alysanne Targaryen's dragon, Silverwing(31)).
Eight of the nine Free Cities were founded as colonies of the Valyrian Freehold, and are thus likely to bear Valyrian names as well:
Volantis's satellite towns of Selhorys, Valysar, and Volon Therys likely have Valyrian names as well. It is also probable that Elyria, Mantarys, Oros, Tolos, Tyria, and Velos are Valyrian in name, being cities close to Old Valyria.(40)
Bastard Valyrian
Free Cities
Bastard Valyrian includes the languages of the nine Free Cities.(1) Each of the cities has its own dialect, and each dialect likely has its own separate derived vocabulary. Syrio Forel of Braavos speaks the Common Tongue with a lilting accent.(41) One of the Brave Companions is described as having a thick Myrish accent.(42)
The Free Cities use glyphs to write Valyrian.(43) The Valyrian of the Free Cities is described as sounding 'liquid'.(44)
Slaver Cities
Valyrian Translations Season 4
The Old Empire of Ghis was conquered by the Valyrian Freehold five thousand years ago, and the Ghiscari have since spoken High Valyrian. The Slaver's Bay cities of Yunkai, Meereen, and Astapor have their own versions of bastard Valyrian, which have been influenced mainly by Old Ghiscari, the ancient language of Old Ghis. Like the Free Cities, the people of the Slaver Cities use glyphs to write Valyrian.(2)

Astapori Valyrian is described as having a 'characteristic growl,' influenced by Ghiscari.(2) The dialect of Yunkai is close enough to that of Astapor to be mutually intelligible.(45)
Valyrian Voice Translator
Yunkai used to be part of the Old Empire of Ghis, and has multiple languages spoken in the city. Mhysa, Maela, Aelalla, Qathei, and Tato are given as words for 'mother', but which tongue fits which word is unknown (excepting the first, which is Ghiscari).(45)

According to George R. R. Martin,
Tolkien was a philologist, and an Oxford don, and could spend decades laboriously inventing Elvish in all its detail. I, alas, am only a hardworking SF and fantasy novel(sic), and I don't have his gift for languages. That is to say, I have not actually created a Valyrian language. The best I could do was try to sketch in each of the chief tongues of my imaginary world in broad strokes, and give them each their characteristic sounds and spellings.(57)

Salaam!! I've been wanting to connect more to my Bengali heritage by reading stories, accounts, history books, etc, but I can't find anything by Bengali authors. I was wondering if you or your followers have any recs and places to buy them (small bookstores or something). Thank you!!

I'm going to keep this list as concise as possible but apologies if I ramble a bit.
Tahmima Aman
She is a Britsh-Bangladeshi author. Her first book, A Golden Age is set in Bangladesh during the liberation war and is written from the PoV of a widow and mother. The second book, The Good Muslim leads on from the events of A Golden Age; it centres around the woman's children and their attitudes to the military dictatorship of General Hussain Muhammad Ershad. Her third book, The Bones of Grace is less about the war and its aftermath, and more about identity as its about a young girl who was adopted by a Bengali family living in the US. Her books are in english, but I must put some trigger warnings as the books dont shy away from topics such as war, death, rape, abortions, extremism etc.
Fakrul Alam
This second recommendation is of a non-fiction book called, Rabindranath Tagore and National Identity Formation in Bangladesh. I wont lie, it's not the easiest reading and it did take me a while to read the whole thing. It is worth it though, because growing up, you hear a lot about Rabindranath Tagore as there is a lot of national pride surrounding him, this compilation of essays helps to understand the adoration and importance of him to Bengali people. This was especially helpful for me, being a kid that grew up quite detached from the Bengali community for a while. The book is in english
Afsan Chowdhury
This book is written in Bengali, it's called Bisshashghatokgon or The Betrayal. It's a fiction book and it's described, in the author's own words, as being about "the politics of class" but within the context of a newly founded Bangladesh. The book is in Bangla, and I'm not currently aware of any translations. I would recommend looking at Afsan Chowdhury's other work as well, he has a very extensive and impressive repertoire as a journalist and also in terms of job history. His articles can all be found in English.
The following is a link to a collection of some of his articles, he also has more published with Himalmag and Al Jazeera. They make for some interesting reading and provide some good starting points for further reading.
In terms of where to buy these books, I try to use BetterWorldBooks where possible.
But finding Afsan Chowdhury's work and Fakrul Alam's work on there would be difficult, I bought Bissashghatokon from a book store in Bangladesh and I got Fakrul Alam's work on Amazon.

Team I-PAC in TMC's War Room: 3-4 members working on every seat, strategy to win Didi, Youngsters from Oxford, Cambridge to IIT-IIM
The IPAC team working to bring Mamata Banerjee to power in Bengal includes youngsters from Oxford, Cambridge to IIT-IIM. Most are aged between 25 and 35 years. The average age of team members is 25 years. All these elections are part of the team of strategist Prashant Kishore.
I-PAC started functioning in West Bengal in
June-2019. On the advice of this team, TMC launched many new campaigns. The announcement of the candidates was also given great importance to the Ipec's appraisal. The candidates whose performance was poor, their tickets were cut. A member of I-PAC told, 'There is someone from almost every state in our team. There are people from different professions. From nanotechnology savvy to law savvy are in the team. Journalism also has a lot of people.
He says, 'There are people of different professions, only then we get different ideas so that one can come up with a good idea. Earlier some foreigners were also part of the team, but there is no foreigner in the team working in Bengal. The special thing is that working in I-PAC is not like a company but as a college. Meaning comes on your own way, go, just complete your project, on time. There are no other restrictions.
Mamta Banerjee is trying hard to become the Chief Minister for the third time. Continuing rallies even after an injury.
There are 294 assemblies, all have team members.
There are a total of 294 assembly seats in West Bengal, all of which have members of the I-PAC. Somewhere there are three members and there are four members. These people are working closely with the local candidate. Give them public feedback. Social media campaigns run. Government schemes work to reach the people. Also, the campaigns which are being run all over the state, make them run in their area. There are many members in this team who also worked with Prashant Kishore in the Delhi elections. Arvind Kejriwal's strategist in Delhi was Prashant Kishor.
One member of the team said, 'The main difference between us and the political parties is that we have no vested interest. On the basis of feedback-facts, we describe candidates as right and wrong, whereas the leaders who are in the party have some interest. That is why they give feedback to the party according to their own. There are more than 700 members of Ipac in Bengal. Some are in office work. Some are in fieldwork.
Prashant Kishor, who once worked for Modi, is a well-known political strategist. Right now, his team is working for Mamta Banerjee in Bengal.

A mobile application named Didir Doot has been launched. It was downloaded 5 lakh times in 20 days. It is also a platform to connect with Didi. In this, CM's speech, news and infographics are shared. All their events, activities can be seen here.

The objective of this program is to reach the homes of the people and solve their problems and make them accessible to the government schemes. In particular, there are 11 schemes, such as Swasthya Saathi, Kanya Saathi, Kanyashree. People's health cards were made at the panchayat level. Caste certificates were issued. All the problems of the people have ended through the government. It is considered to be a very successful campaign.

Hey got a question, I’m ethnically bengali but I virtually know nothing about my mother tongue language. I can understand what my parents are saying sometimes but I still know nothing. Where do I begin from scratch?
Hi lovey, thanks for your ask! I’d like to preface my answer by saying I am not an expert by any means (I’m still very new and inexperienced), but I do at least have an idea of how to get started :)
First thing’s first, before you can even hope to learn Bangla, especially by yourself, you need to learn to read! 95% of all resources will be useless to you if you can’t read. So:
1. Check out my post on learning the alphabet. I list resources and ideas that you may find helpful, including apps, videos, and posts.
2. Download an app called BorKnow. It’s a preschooler app and it was my favorite thing when I was learning to read. Honestly, this app will take care of 80% of your alphabet needs.

If you decide you’d like to use my blog for a lot of your resources (please do!) it would be beneficial for you to view all of my alphabet posts under the GRAMMAR tab one by one as you master each “unit”. The reasoning is that when you’re learning to read a new alphabet it helps to keep a consistent romanization system, and I only use one.
The system I use was designed by Hanne-Ruth Thompson, and in my opinion her system makes the most sense (some may disagree, and that’s totally cool). You can purchase her Bangla-English dictionary for like $13 (USD) which will help you develop vocabulary and verb conjugations later, as well as assist your reading with consistent romanized spellings. Although very helpful, this is totally optional! My alphabet posts break down her system for you, and I use the same system for all of my posts, so don’t feel you have to put down any money if you don’t want to, especially this early on! I make my posts to make this education free and accessible :D

Still, as the number of infections rises, poorer governments will face even more daunting challenges. For some countries, simply accessing regularly running water is a challenge, especially when regular handwashing has become so important to coronavirus prevention.

Sikh kitchens feed New Delhi’s masses in virus lockdown

China has constructed or renovated nearly 200 government buildings, gifted batches of computers to African governments, and built “secure” telecommunications networks that give Beijing the opportunity for unprecedented surveillance on the continent. The report analyzes how China’s construction projects are a trojan horse for spying on African governments, based on China’s long-standing pattern of using its foreign infrastructure projects for political advantage and industrial espionage.
