Razia Sultan
Raziyyat-Ud-Dunya Wa Ud-Din, popularly known as Razia Sultan, was born in 1205 and ruled the Delhi Sultanate from 1236 to 1240. She was the first and only female Muslim ruler of Delhi and the Indian subcontinent. Razia's path to power was influenced by her father, Mamluk Sultan Shamsuddin Iltutmish. He recognized her capabilities and named her as his heir apparent after observing her administration of Delhi during his absence in 1231–1232. However, upon Iltutmish's death, her half-brother Ruknuddin Firuz seized the throne, backed by their mother Shah Turkan. Razia, determined to claim her rightful position, incited a rebellion against her brother and his supporters. With the support of certain nobles and the public, she successfully overthrew Ruknuddin, ascending to the throne in 1236. During her reign, Razia faced challenges from Turkic nobles who initially underestimated her but grew resentful of her assertive leadership. Despite opposition, she implemented policies that challenged traditional power structures, including appointing non-Turkic officers to key positions and leading military campaigns herself. However, her rule was short-lived. In 1240, she was deposed by a group of nobles who opposed her policies. Razia attempted to regain power by marrying one of the rebels, Ikhtiyaruddin Altunia, but was ultimately defeated by her half-brother and successor, Muizuddin Bahram. Razia Sultan's reign is significant for challenging gender norms in medieval Islamic societies. Her brief tenure as ruler symbolizes the potential for female empowerment in male-dominated political landscapes. Despite her ultimate defeat, Razia's legacy endures as a testament to her resilience and determination to defy societal expectations.

INDIES TOP 100 BOLLYWOOD HISTORICALS !
INDIES TOP 100 BOLLYWOOD HISTORICALS !
"History is blessing as an inspiration, & disaster as an excuse". Since we at Indies devote part of our time here online, to being film historians & not real life historians, & since there has anyway been a scarcity of historical film material produced thru time, to entertainingly hook our audiences in to our enthralling past/culture, not just in the new millennia but even in the golden b&w age of cinema, we would like to take the cinematic liberty of defining history, not per the strict parameters imposed on real history /antiquity researchers, but a milder set of rules, namely: 1. The films should be largely based on broadly accepted & popular real set of events or incidents & people, from society - if not with exact places & dates or names altogether. 2. The stories passing on thru time, mostly via linked textual references, must have a broad acceptance in culture as inspiring reality, even w/o empirical tangible evidences to establish their authenticity, & despite contrary, or dismissive, lesser popular claims in circulation. 3. The amount of magic, not just metaphoric but real magical qualities, attributed to humans narrated via these stories, must be restricted to a bare minimum & atleast not form a crux of the film (as such stories already find a hallowed place in Indies Mythological Films section). PS. Few of the below listed films, were released in dual languages, incl Hindi, back in the day, even if only non-Hindi versions available for viewership today. PS. There are a very small few old b&w (assumed not confirmed) historical films from 1930s & 1940s era coming across as impressive at just poster or casting look, but with no prints available for public view, nor any journalistic literature of the time to gain more insight, very hard to include them at Indies so. PS. Jfyi. The 2 most prominent Bollywood Historical masters to emerge post this exclusive Indie historical collation, lending this all-time research much density, are- Paidi Jairaj followed by Bharat Bhushan! Each with a handful historical films placed atop or very high up the all-time list !

Shams ud-Din Iltutmish was the first Muslim sovereign of India to rule from Delhi, and his reign was from 1211 to 1236. He was sold into slavery as a young boy, but rose to power through his looks, charisma, and cleverness. After the death of his firstborn, he named his capable daughter Razia Sultana his heir, rather than one of his less competent sons.

निर्भया لیلا
Nirbhaya is a Hindi female word for fearless; I first heard this word in reference to the victim of the 2012 gang rape case in Delhi. Leila is an Urdu/Persian female name derived from the word “Leil” meaning night, which has the same pronunciation as knight in English. Leila is a popular figure from the Romeo and Juliet of the East “Leila Majnun”, who is forcibly married off. The artwork itself is inspired by female figures in Indian history; mainly, Razia Sultana and Laxmibai. Razia Sultana was the only female ruler of the Delhi Sultanate. Laxmibai was a queen who fought against the British during the Indian Rebellion.
“Nirbhaya Leila” – Fearless Night
