Painting, in opaque watercolour on paper, depicting a lady, perhaps Chand Bibi of Bijapur, India seated on a rock in a lake near a herd of elephants. This painting is in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in the UK.
(Sultana Chand Bibi (1550–1599 CE) was the Regent of Bijapur Sultanate 1580-1590, and regent of Ahmednagar Sultanate, in India holding the throne for her minor nephew.)
After all, whomst among us has not bathed in a lake of lotuses with our herd of elephants in attendance?

Barbara Shelley (Village of the Damned, Quatermass and the Pit, Dracula: Prince of Darkness)— Leading lady of UK horror films in the 50s and 60s. Her hottest film is definitely "Dracula: Prince Of Darkness" where she transforms from uptight Victorian to sexy vampire after being bitten by Christopher Lee's Count.

Remembering #AbrarAlvi, the illustrious screenwriter and dialogue writer in Hindi films, on his 14th death anniversary (18/11/09).
He was a key member of Guru Dutt's team and known for writing films like "Aar-Paar," "Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam," "Kaagaz Ke Phool," "Pyaasa," and "Mr. & Mrs. '55." In 1953, while on the set of "Baaz," he met Guru Dutt. Dutt was struggling with a scene, and he offered a suggestion that impressed Dutt so much that he asked him to write "Aar-Paar." This led to him becoming a vital part of Dutt's team.
The films he worked on with Dutt are now considered classics worldwide. He also directed the successful movie "Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam." He appeared in a touching three-part documentary about Guru Dutt, reflecting on their work together. This documentary was made by Channel 4 and is included in the DVD extras for "Kaagaz Ke Phool" and "Chaudhvin ka Chand."
After working with Guru Dutt and a controversy over who really directed "Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam," he found it hard to make a mark as a director. But he continued to write screenplays and dialogues for many films, some of which were big hits, like "Professor," "Prince," and "Suraj." He also worked with Rajesh Khanna, writing for "Janta Hawaldar" and doing the screenplay and dialogues for "Begunaah."
In this photo, Director Abrar Alvi enjoys snacks in the company of #GuruDutt on the sets of the movie Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962).

For My Father, Karachi 1947
Meena Alexander
Mid-May, centipedes looped over netting at the well's mouth.
Girls grew frisky in summer frocks, lilies spotted with blood.
You were bound to meteorology,
Science of fickle clouds, ferocious winds.
The day you turned twenty-six fighter planes cut a storm,
Fissured air baring the heart's intricate meshwork
Of want and need—
Springs of cirrus out of which sap and shoot you raised me.
Crossing Chand Bibi Road,
Named after the princess who rode with hawks,
Slept with a gold sword under her pillow,
Raced on polo fields,
You saw a man lift a child, her chest burnt with oil,
Her small thighs bruised.
He bore her through latticed hallways
Into Lady Dufferin's hospital.
How could you pierce the acumen of empire,
Mesh of deception through which soldiers crawled,
Trees slashed with petrol,
Grille work of light in a partitioned land?
When you turned away,
Your blue black hair was crowned with smoke—
You knelt on a stone. On your bent head
The monsoons poured.

Anne Baxter (The Ten Commandments, All About Eve)—her soft, gentle voice in "all about eve", those gentle eyes with something odd behind them, the way she flips from Sweet Innocent to Viper on a dime......there was something Built Different about anne baxter, man, and it makes her so good for playing people who are Built Wrong. also one of my favorite batmen villains (her joint episode w vincent price is a delight) and of course I'm obsessed with her columbo episode where she bosses around edith head and does fabulous movie star things for no good reason. and i would be REMISS if i didn't mention her slink—oh the slink—in the ten commandments...................pardon me i must go think of sinning again
Waheeda Rehman (Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Pyaasa, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam)—90+ films and counting, an absolute legend of Hindi cinema. When I see her in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam it makes me want to chew glass

Anne Baxter:
Tumblr media
The prettiest murderer in that film. Just so beautifully evil as Nefertari.
Anne Baxter was part of my Bisexual Awakening. My family has a tradition that every Palm Sunday we watch The ten commandments on TV together... And starting from a very young age, I essentially developed a crushes on Anne Baxter's Nefertiri & Yul Brynner's Ramses. Dude, the woman was HOT! They both were! My crush definitely wasn't helped by the fact that Anne Baxter's costumes were a bit on the sheer side. She had a way of capturing you with her eyes, and I never understood why Charlton heston's Moses didn't just have a threesome with Nefertiri and Ramses. LOL
Her Nefertiri in The Ten Commandments was FORMATIVE TO ME. If not the hottest old movie lady, then she definitely played the hottest old movie character. if that makes sense.
Tumblr media
Look. Listen. I only *just* discovered her on a post from the Have You Seen This Romcom poll blog. Saw she had the same last name as me and went OOH hi hello. Went to her IMdB and saw she was born in Indiana like moi. I am now even more intrigued. Been eagerly telling my partner this, and he was like "maybe you guys are distantly related?" And after 2 hrs of going down the tumblr tag + her imdb photos, I'm In Deep(tm) and I can't stop looking at her like 😍 When I go to my grandma's house, bet your ass I'm gonna check my grandpa's genealogy and see if we're somehow related. Sorry that's not really propaganda I just got real excited, esp when I saw that the submission deadline was extended (bless your soul). Narrowing down the movies where she's hottest in was Hell tyvm. I've only just discovered her, she looks gorgeous to me in every movie still I see of her gdi lol.

Chand Bibi - Heroic queen of the Deccan
Chand Bibi (1550-1599) was the daughter of Hussain Nizam Shah I of Ahmednagar, present day India. At the age of 12, she was married to  Ali Adil Shah I of the Bijapur Sultanate to secure an alliance between him and her family.
Chand Bibi grew into a brilliant woman. She spoke Persian, Arabic, Turkish, Urdu as well as the dialects used in the army. She drew, painted, played the veena, rode on horseback and enjoyed outdoor sports. Chand Bibi acquired considerable political influence, joined her husband on his military campaigns and had her say in the matters of the state.
Ali Adil Shah was murdered in 1579. Since he was childless, the son of his brother was crowned sultan. Chand Bibi became and his guardian and got rid of the nobleman who had been appointed as the regent. However, the next regent managed to imprison her. Another noble led an army to rescue Chand Bibi and restored her as the young sultan’s guardian.
In 1580, Bijapur was besieged by the armies of the neighboring sultanates of Golconda and Ahmednagar. Chand Bibi oversaw the defense, went from post to post and encouraged the besieged. She personally guarded a breach caused by the enemy bombardments and directed the repair’s work. During this time, she also solved internal conflicts among the nobles and managed to raise a large force, causing the siege to be lifted after a year.
After a coup was masterminded by a new regent, Chand Bibi decided to leave Bishapur. When a bride was sent to her homeland, she went with her. Her kingdom was, however, caught in violent succession wars. In 1595, the powerful Mughal emperor laid his eyes on Ahmednagar and launched an invasion. Besieged in the Ahmednagar fort, Chand Bibi refused to submit, even if she had to fight an enemy that was reputed to be invincible. She convinced the neighboring powers to send troops and enlisted a general to help her.
However, the Mughal sappers dug five tunnels full of explosive under the fort. Chand Bibi ordered two of them to be countermined to remove the explosives, but the third one exploded, bringing down a large portion of the city wall. Chand Bibi then donned armor and rushed forward with a sword in her hand to defend the breach, soon joined by her soldiers. The defenders fought valiantly and repelled the enemy.
Chand Bibi was seen by all defending the breach and this feat won her the admiration of her enemy. She then oversaw the repair during the whole night. Chand Bib, however, lost her allies and found herself isolated. She managed to strike a good deal with the invaders, as she recognized the precariousness of her position. A truce was negotiated, but the conflicts of factions resumed at court.
The truce was broken in 1599 when the Mughal went back. Chand Bibi found herself once again besieged with a small garrison. Realizing that it was a losing battle, she decided to surrender. She made the mistake of telling a senior officer about her plan, he was appalled about this and broke into the palace with other soldiers to murder her in her own apartments. The Mughal eventually managed to conquer the fort.
