despite my better judgement i regularly look up custas on twitter to find fanart and it's crazy how since the last chapters many, many people go for a "can't wait to see him taken in by qifrey" approach. my first counter-question to that argument would be: what about dagda? that's his only family. custas is protective of him and loves him a whole lot. he'd not be allowed in. you think after a few weeks of being terrified he'll die, the kid will feel better with him away, doing what he doesn't know in between rare visits? the second question which is still unanswered by the story is: custas' body is marked with a forbidden spell. it's not something he can presumably take out. it's visible. would he be allowed to roam free with that? wouldn't the knights try and get his legs cut, or get rid of him in a place where no witch and no unknowing can get ideas based on it?
in the latest chapter as i write this, coco chimes in to tell custas to abandon the path he's taken, accentuated by the heavy handed visual of her literally ripping off part of the brim of his hat. it's a great moment if you're of the "he should become qifrey's apprentice too, like coco did" side, but i am not. witch hat atelier is not subtle about what it wants to tell you and so far most side characters with development have been written with a specific role in the story. custas' role is to show the good witches don't help, because for some people, the system they're part of will never work. having custas' resolution be to join that same system doesn't feel very fitting, unless you're going for a change the system from the inside approach, which i disagree with personally and also think is a hell of a goal to give a preteen boy with already a lot going on in his life...
then there's the question of how he mirrors coco. two kids around the same age, unknowings turned witches after losing their only loved one. paneling choices and coco's own dialog reinforce this. they're similar, what changes is the spells they cast and which side took them in. making them the same side would take from this. their situations won't be resolved until they get closure about their cursed loved ones one way or another...this could work if coco was to also switch sides, but it'd devalue her argument for custas to join her. also, if both got to experience both sides of the system and switched because their side wasn't helping their (shared) situation, we go back to the start...unless another element gets introduced in the mix it doesn't work

Full dialogue transcript under the cut:
PAGE 1:
(We begin at Lord Beldaruit's estate.)
Apprentice 1: GEEZ, what a long lesson!! I'm pooped!!
Apprentice 2: We still gotta study.
Apprentice 1: I know...Professor Beldaruit never cuts us a break!
Apprentice 3: Oh, someone's in the library--I was hoping we could set up in there...
All 3: GASP
Apprentice 3: ...oh. Uh...h-hey, Predis Qifrey! Is there, uh--c-can we...
Qifrey (glaring): WHAT?
All 3: ON SECOND THOUGHT, THE COURTYARD IS CALLIN' OUR NAME!! YESSIR!! A BEAUTIFUL DAY OUT THERE--THE OCEAN LOOKS EXTRA--UH--BLUE!  NICE TO SEE YOU!! WE GOTTA GO BUT WE'LL SEE YOU AROUND!
All 3: BYE!!!!
PAGE 2:
Qifrey: ...(long pause)......THEY HATE ME.
(new scene - at the Great Hall)
Alaira: They don't hate you.
Qifrey: Yes, they do.
Alaira: Why's it bothering you, all of a sudden? I thought YOU hated THEM.
Qifrey: They're annoying. They're brats.
Alaira: 'But?'
Qifrey: ...but I don't...I dunno. Forget it.
PAGE 3:
Alaira: Well, it's clearly bugging you. Let's talk about it...oh--there's Olruggio. He-ey! Over here!
(Olruggio waves goodbye to other friends and approaches Alaira and Qifrey)
Olruggio: Hey, guys. How're you?
Alaira: I'm having a lovely day, myself.
Qifrey: ...
Olruggio: That's good. (to Qifrey) Ah--and you? What's the plight of the day?
Qifrey: *nngh*
PAGE 4:
Alaira: He thinks Lord Bel's new apprentices hate him.
Olruggio: Ah.
Qifrey: Get right to it, then.
Olruggio: Nah! They don't hate you. They're just new, and nervous, and--
Qifrey (interrupting): ...How do you do it?
Olruggio: Hm?
Qifrey: How do you get...people to like you?
Olruggio (flustered): ...ah...that's...I guess I don't...know.
PAGE 5:
Alaira: He flatters them and dazzles them with his charming laugh and smile! But those don't fool me! We've been friends for too long! I clearly recall our second test--and Olly showing up with three palm quires full of snake repelling spells--
Olruggio: NOOOOOPE HOLD IT RIGHT THERE, ALAIRA.
Alaira: Because he somehow missed the vital detail that it wasn't a real snake--
Olruggio: I STUDIED WAY MORE THAN YOU FOR THAT LOUSY TEST--
Alaira: Haha, relax!!
Qifrey (ducking to avoid Olruggio): Watch it!
Olruggio: HOW THE HELL WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW "ANTRE" MEANT "CAVE"?! Stupid archaic textbooks!
Alaira: Pfft. I dunno, look it up?! Ask??
Olruggio: MAYBE YOU COULDA TOLD ME--?!!
PAGE 6:
Alaira: Your test score is not my responsibility--
Olruggio: I SCORED TOP MARKS ON THAT TEST
Alaira: And you only ended up needing one quire...
Olruggio: HAR HAR
Olruggio: Don't listen to her, Qifrey.
Alaira: He was there, too, genius!
Olruggio: ACK--well--s-still...
Qifrey: ...(smiling) Pfft!
(Olruggio blushes)
PAGE 7:
Alaira: There!
Qifrey: Huh?!
Alaira: A real smile. I knew you had it in ya! A genuine smile brightens the whole face! It does everyone's. Yours, too! Right, Olly?
Qifrey: ...?? It does?
Alaira: Yeah!
Olruggio (shyly): Always.
PAGE 8:
Olruggio (offscreen): I expect an apology, Alaira.
Alaira (offscreen): Pfft. I expect a lotta things in life, Olruggio.
Qifrey: ...
(scene transitions from Great Hall to Beldaruit's estate. Qifrey enters, removes hat. Hears voices down the hall.)
Apprentice: Professor Beldaruit. Can you check this spell for me?
Beldaruit: Certainly...I wonder if your sigils aren't too rigid...Let's try again.
Apprentice: Ugh...again? I'll never get it!
Beldaruit: You will! But you must practice.
Apprentice: SIGH. Yes, Professor...
PAGE 9:
Beldaruit: ...there we are. You see? These are exquisite sigils.
Apprentice: Thanks! Oh, hey. Is that--
(Qifrey walks past the door in silence.)
Beldaruit: ...I believe so. We will see him at supper, I hope.
Apprentice: ...
Beldaruit: ...moving on, then...
(Qifrey enters his bedroom. He sets his hat on his vanity and removes his cloak.)
PAGE 10:
(Qifrey looks in the mirror above the vanity. He tries a smile, but it soon falls into a grimace. He remembers the earlier conversation.)
Flashback Text:
Alaira: Yours, too!
Qifrey: It does?
Alaira: Yeah!
Olruggio: Always.
Qifrey: ...Tch.
(Qifrey releases his ribbon tassel and walks away from the mirror.)

PLUV I have finally caught up with wha (at least I hope I have, I could only find up to chapter 70) and…many thoughts very many thoughts
I’ll start with Dean—I for some reason was not expecting him to have a wife and then she appeared and the way that man MELTED stop it stop it he loves her so much, they love each other so much it’s so sweet. But his little altercation with Beldaruit…..Jesus Christ he pissed Beldaruit off so bad but understandably so. That was such a brazen move to ask about exchanging information when Beldaruit was in a vulnerable position. You’re right, I can definitely the see the potential for him being an ultimate antagonist later on…him and his son
Oruggio of course looked so good doin his lil thing, I am still stuck on the scene where he was getting really defensive over how Qifrey should just leave Coco and Tartah alone and not to embarrass them like PLEASE I have to know who hurt this poor man when he had a puppy crush on someone as a boy
And QIFREY…..pluv get him away from me before I shake him senseless, smack him silly, dig my claws into him. That fucking panel of him laying facedown in the water……….so speechless. Literally stared at it like “no way. no way is he going to die by the thing he hates the most.” And while I am SO relieved that it was just a smoke illusion, that was such a brutal scene. Not to mention Coco injuring her eye, literally a mirror to Qifrey’s injury…….so cruel
As for the girls, their character arcs have come so far, Aggot’s especially, she holds a special place in my heart
Just. Mentally pulling at my hair and rocking back and forth in a corner, this manga keeps pulling my emotions in every which way I don’t even know what to do with myself
okay u need to send me where youve been reading bc i can only find up to chapter 68 (dw, u didn't spoil anything) BUT YEAHHHHHH
okay the WIFE THING AHHHHHH im genuinely wholeheartedly obsessed with her And his utter adoration for her. like when i first saw her i swooned ofc but then her lil scene later on where it's clear shes Also very smart and capable and not like. just a sweet/maternal figure which i kinda expected...... whew. until proven otherwise i am going to make up a zayamaia in my head who is a true partner in crime for all of dean's fucked up schemes 🫣
ORU'S LITTLE TALK HAD ME CRAZY TOO SDJFHBV when i first read that i went running to my friend like "hes having flashbacks to when he and i got caught together as teens </3" SHDFBSJDKHFB but also </////3 qifrey's response to that <//////////3 SHATTERED me truly
the parallels between coco/qifrey make me absolutely rabid foaming at the mouth putting him in a jar and shaking him like a little bug. watching coco steadily going down the same path as him while he's so blinded by his own desire for revenge......... oh qifrey i want to dissect u
the thing that truly made me weep that i kept talking about btw was the plotline with galga (specifically when, after his memories are wiped, he tries to help the girl who wiped them like OHHHHHHHHHH my god OH MY GODDDDDD he is A Magic Cop who got his personhood wiped away because of it thus removing his corruption as a magic cop and with that stripped away!!! he instinctively chooses to aide a little girl oh!!! my god!!!!! oh my fucking god!!!!!!!!) and also everything w custas and dagda my poor heart my poor poor heart............

Sit With Me a Moment
Word Count: 693
Summary: “They did indeed sit for a moment, watching the flames dance to the crackle of wood mixed with the forest’s chorus.”
Author’s Note: Happy day 3 of yumeweek! I tried to put something together for Qifrey this time, and I’d like to try to alternate between him and the other two I’ve written for for this event in terms of development for the near future. I think, we’ll see where my brain decides to take me, but either way I love this witch so much and I’m still chomping at the bit for the anime can’t wait to lose my mind next year!! It’s ironic that I love these two being sad together when all I want is for them to heal each other hfieslfels it will come in time I’m sure, as always thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy!
Night had descended like a cloak upon the atelier and the surrounding moors; the moon and stars presided over the rolling hills like shepherds in the twilight. The feathery grassland swayed like a sea in the calm evening air as a comfortable hush nested in the blades like dew. Drawing nearer to the atelier itself, one could catch the sound of nature’s sweet symphony serenading the picturesque homestead with a subtle melody colored with a melancholic lilt. A tune carried on the wind from the nearby woodland, the question of whether or not nature was truly feeling sullen was anyone’s guess. But the silver haired witch that alone served as audience for the somber tune was likely just projecting that atmosphere himself, lounging on a couch before the hearth as his thoughts went around in circles.
His eyes were closed to the approach of a small fluffy companion, separate from the furry noodle otherwise known as a brushbug that had curled up in the first warm place it could find on his person. This fluffy creature was no such thing at all, but rather a cunning witch donning a mirror cloak, one of her personal design and crafting. The dusting of stars that accented her form was a quality unique to her casting alone, an imprint that displayed itself in one way or another in the result of every glyph she traced. Encountering the sight of his dozing form, the cat wrongly assumed he was oblivious to the sensation of fur brushing skin as she butted her head against his limp hand.
Said hand came to life much to her surprise, and just as Qifrey attempted to return the favor the witch stumbled back and immediately dispelled her four legged form. Scrambling to regain her bearings in the aftermath, words weren’t cooperating as much as she would’ve liked. “I—I thought you were—.”
“There’s no need to panic, please,” the bespectacled witch soothed as he sat up slowly, reaching for his quire. In a matter of moments he summoned a spell Nova had seen him cast on a few occasions; it was one she positively adored. Crystalline droplets drifted from ink to air as he closed the circle, infusing the space with a rejuvenating aura that instantly relaxed her tense nerves. “I apologize for startling you, I didn’t realize you were so unprepared.”
“It’s fine, really. I’m just sorry for disturbing you,” she sheepishly replied, ears folding flat as she collected her cloak and promptly perking up again as Qifrey patted the the cushion next to him. “I didn’t mean to wake you or anything, you can go back to sleep. Or maybe you should just go to bed, if you’d prefer.”
“Sit with me a moment,” he insisted with a few more pats.
She acquiesced when she accepted he wasn’t going to give up, settling herself at his side as she fought to suppress her giddy panic. They did indeed sit for a moment, watching the flames dance to the crackle of wood mixed with the forest’s chorus.
“Can you promise that you won’t forget me if something happens?” Nova murmured on the ghost of a breath, allowing herself the bold luxury of resting her head on his shoulder. The curve of her ear tickled his chin, but the shiver that followed felt warm to him in a different way. “Well, I guess you can’t promise that, not really. So, how about this instead? Even if something happens, no matter what happens down the line, will you befriend me again? Or at least don’t leave me to flounder, if you can—”
“I’ll never forget you, I promise you that. Its one I intend to keep,” he replied without hesitation, snaking an arm around her almost reflexively as she nestled against him. “I would never invite someone into my home with the intent to throw them away. And you are naturally no exception.” Far from it, but he didn’t feel the need to emphasize such sentiments at the moment.
The purr he soon heard rumbling in his companion’s throat was the only response he needed, and the only one she desired to give.

Oooouhh witch hat chapter 77. Olruggio thoughts a swirling. What happened when he was a kid is still hurting him so much. The fact he had to deal with his injuries on his own too cause the others are elsewhere T-T Someone comfort him RIGHT NAOW!
It was really funny when utowin picked him up and threw him though I love that recurring olly bit. A ragdoll man.
When I’m not being insane and unnormal about him, the actual plot and conversations are staying super interesting, coustas and dagda I love you forever <3
Coco’s injury/scar T-T Am I really evil if I say I wanted her eye to be damaged from that so there’s more mirroring of Qifrey?….

I Firmly believe that in a modern au qifrey Would have a motorcycle, and would constantly get asked ‘oh is that your husband’s?’
not because of his eyes just because nobody expects this weird man who dresses like a very young literature professor to Have a motorcycle. Olruggio has Rides A Motorcycle vibes but he drives a subaru he bought six years ago for the safety rating.

The boy who came from Slistas: in which I theorise that Qifrey is a tree
So I have read Witch Hat Atelier, I have connected way too many dots, and I have concluded that Qifrey is a silver tree who was turned human and experimented upon to allow the Brimhats to perform blood magic. And he is a little freaked out about the whole situation.
Tumblr media
Please come dive down that rabbit hole with me (detailed spoilers up to Chapter 40 under the cut):
There are indications early on that silver trees have ties to blood magic. Silver trees are described as very human-like, and possibly sentient: the magical ink taken from their sap is described as the tree’s “very blood”, a legend claims that a silver tree fell in love with a witch, and Beldarut claims that these trees, like humans, choose where they live and are capable of some form of self-determination. According to the shopkeeper Nornoa, it’s a mystery why these trees are so different from others, and integral to drawing magic. A side theory here could be that silver trees started out as humans, and that the act of drawing the sap of silver trees to get magic ink began as some manner of blood sacrifice. Which brings me to my next point:
Iguin the Brimhat is a blood magic user, and this plays a role in his overarching scheme. We know that he wants Coco to embrace forbidden magic to disrupt the statu quo established by witch society, but it seems to be only one facet of his plan. Early in the story, he is shown pouring his own blood into Coco’s inkwell, giving her the enhanced magic that leads her to alter a whole landscape. What’s a bit puzzling here is that the ink is described as “blue-tinged” by Nornoa when he examines it, and he says it is mixed with a lot of different components. So, presumably, blood alone isn’t enough to make magic happen, but it can be used as a magical enhancer. Or, at least, Iguin’s blood can: whether he achieved this by experimenting on himself, or whether any blood can work as enhancer when mixed with the right ingredients, hasn’t yet been explored. In any case, this resonates well with the mythos of the near-sentient silver tree and its magic-giving blood. Iguin has this troubling line while drawing out his blood “How long can you hide the fact that magic is just a lie?”, which points to the idea that there’s a secret about the origin of magic that witch society either forgot, or chose to cover up.
Tumblr media
Which brings me to our favourite overzealous secret-bearer, Qifrey, and his possible links with Iguin’s plot. Iguin is our primary suspect for stealing Qifrey’s eye: he seems familiar with him from the beginning of the story (“I’ll teach you everything that Qifrey won’t”), and they are natural foils in the narrative, being rival teachers to Coco. There is also the theme of the eye, which Iguin uses both as his mask and as his namesake “Lidless Eye, Sight of the world”. Until the story gives us further elements, it is natural to assume that Iguin’s plan, the experimentations done on Qifrey, and the plot Qifrey feels duty-bound to stop, are all parts of the same whole. Qifrey’s urgency to stop this plan “before anyone finds out” mirrors Iguin’s earlier line “how long can you hide that magic is a lie”.
Qifrey was experimented on with “a new type of magic”. The forbidden magic we have seen so far had a lot to do with human transformation, and particularly with turning humans into animals or objects (the petrification of Coco’s mother, Sasaran’s accidental hybridization with his own cat, Eunie’s transformation into a scaled wolf, the gilded people of Romonon…). The natural opposite of that magic would be one that gives human shape to an animal, an object - or a silver tree, so that a new type of magic ink can be harvested from it. Having his eye plucked out would then work as a grim parallel to the way witches gain magic by cutting out branches from silver trees. It may even be because of that stolen eye that Iguin is able to perform blood magic. Also note that Slistas, the forest of shadows in which Qifrey was found, started out as a forest of silver trees until a necromancer used it as experimental ground to bring the dead back to life. You could imagine that a few silver trees would have survived the corruption of the forest, and could have been used for the Brimhats’ experiments.
Tumblr media
There’s some more shared symbolism between Qifrey and silver trees, starting with their color schemes. The role of silver trees as givers of magic matches Qifrey’s role in the narrative as the one who introduces Coco to the magical world. There’s the comparison drawn by Beldarut between Qifrey seeking a home and a silver tree choosing a place to take root (Qifrey is clearly most comfortable when surrounded in nature and loves nothing more than frolicking in the countryside, if that counts as a proof).
I also found it interesting that in chapter 40, when Qifrey reveals that he has been a test subject for a new type of forbidden magic, the panels then alternate between Olruggio’s shocked reaction and shots of what looks like an unfurling silver tree.
From a wider story perspective, Qifrey’s backstory would be an interesting twist in Coco’s journeys and struggles, which center on the ethics of magic. If Qifrey owes his current human life to forbidden magic, is he de facto illegal according to the rules of witch society? Plus that sort of reveal would be a shocking enough revelation to explain Qifrey’s desperation and rashness, while still retaining the whimsical atmosphere of the manga (Coco! Your professor is actually a magic tree person! Please make sure he gets good soil and plenty of natural light).
Aaaaand that’s my deep-dive pet theory! Thank you so much for reading, and I’d love to see some of your speculations on the manga as well!

I have a theory that Oru will have some character development/more backstory in the next bigger arc since it's implied that qifrey's atelier will be going helping people during snowfall season, which would kinda mirror whatever happened to little oru in the flashback :^) (sorry for my english!)
ohhhhh i love this idea yes!!!!!
