"Is it because of how differently it (Final Fantasy XIII) handles female characters compared to earlier games?" YES you are so right about this!! The main cast is majority female and the fact that each female is an individual vastly different from each other with multiple dimensions and layers to their character is probably why people shit on it. Plus if you look at the males in the group, they are FAR from the typical brooding male FF protagonist and yet still unique and nuanced in their own way. People didn't like that the characters broke the molds/archetypes/tropes that many of the FF games follow. And that's why the FFXIII cast stands out so strikingly to me personally.
And they're not just deep characters, they're allowed to have major character flaws that actually lead to negative consequences! Not to mention that their personal goals and motivations do NOT revolve around men
Even well-written female characters from other ff games (like yuna for example) don't have any traits that men would generally find unappealing in a woman, they don't challenge male players at all
And then in comes lightning, who starts off so toxic and poisonous to the people around her, acting violent toward male characters and making rash decisions that require you to think about why she does what she does, and the male-dominated fandom hates her
And don't even get me started on vanille and fang because their bond is at the foundation of ff13's story, but it's somehow the one aspect that I've seen haters sweep over the absolute most. Which is very strange considering most people can recognize how important zack was to cloud, or tidus to yuna, or rinoa to squall, or locke to celes, etc
Now that there's men going around wildly misinterpreting tifa's and aerith's friendship as them actually just fighting over cloud, you really gotta wonder if they just didn't care about fang and vanille because their relationship had nothing to do with a man lmao. And you just can't fully understand ff13's story without understanding how important fang and vanille are to each other, just like how you can't understand lightning without taking into account her struggle between self-preservation and the love she has for serah
I don't like to cry sexism over assumptions, but it's pretty hard not to do that when such a huge chunk of ff13 haters are men that insist the characters are one-dimensional, like?? how can anyone be that wrong?? Especially when the ff games they praise have some of the most one-dimensional female characters in the entire franchise (sorry ff4 but your handling of rosa is atrocious), but of course that doesn't matter because hey! The dudes need a love interest to sit there and look pretty for them!

Happy Friday! “Come on. I’ll show you how to dance” for Fenhawke?
Thank you very much for your ask for @dadrunkwriting, I know I took my time, but I really enjoyed writing this x3 Pairing: Fenris/mHawke Rated: G Lentgh: 1075
“Well, aren’t you a wallflower?” Hawke chuckled as he walked over to Fenris.
The elf was as broody as usual, holding a glass of wine in his hand and his ears dropped just slightly. He didn’t look pleased to be here, but Fenris was generally hard to read.
At least there had been no occasion where Hawke could read the other man’s face.
“And you are just as funny as usual,” Fenris remarked unimpressed. There was nothing changing in his expression, apart from a hint of annoyance maybe. “Shouldn’t you be on the Dancefloor?” he added, not very subtle in hinting he wanted to be left alone.
“I could ask you the same.” A grin spread on Hawke’s bearded face. “Why aren’t you dancing with someone? Surely there is someone who caught your eye.” He knew for a fact that Fenris caught many, leaving him with a minor feeling of jealousy.
“Maybe.” Fenris's answer wasn’t giving away much
He watched him bringing the glass of wine to his lips, watching them parting just slightly to allow the red liquid to pour in before his throat moved as he swallowed. It was the most beautiful way he’d ever watch someone drinking wine and he found himself falling even more than before.
How could there ever be someone as sensual as this man beside him?
“How about you?” The man beside him broke the short moment of silence, his green eyes watching him intensely. “Isn’t anyone in the crowd that caught your eye, Serah?” he added pointedly.
“Someone as known as you, should probably have a suitor… or more?”
“Ah, you see it’s a bit more complicated than that,” Hawke answered. He did have many who tried to win his favour, but there weren’t many he had an eye for, unfortunately. Well, at least none apart from the mysterious elf beside him.
Yet, there was no way he could tell him that, was there?
Actually, it was quite funny really, because Hawke never had been bad when it came to being upfront. At least, he never had been before. But when it came to Fenris, there was so much fear that what he could say would be wrong that he felt as if someone had tied a knot into his tongue.
“Complicated in what way?” The elf beside him cocked his head, seemingly intrigued.
Oh, shit, here they go.
“You see, the person I want to dance with, has yet to come forward,” Hawke answered, swallowing a heavy lump in his throat as he tried to appear confident at the same time. Yet, according to Fenris's face, he wasn’t very lucky in that department.
“Hmph, If you want to dance with them so badly, isn’t it you who should ask?” Fenris just remarked. “I bet there is no one who would deny your request,” he added silently, taking yet another sip from his wine.
“How would you know that?”
“Because you are a handsome man Hawke.” A smile played around the elf’s lips as he regarded him. His green eyes were haunting, yet intimidating at the same time, leaving the taller man speechless and suffering a dry throat.
“So, you wouldn’t pass down an invitation to dance?” Hawke asked, his heart beating violently in his chest.
He watched as Fenris's cheeks deepened in colour, a flash dancing over the olive-toned skin. The shadow of his bangs fell over his eyes for a moment, probably in an attempt to hide as he pursed his lips, searching for a possible answer.
“I’d be flattered. But I am afraid that I am no dancer.” he tried to answer as diplomatically as he could.
“You mean, that you don’t know how?” Hawke answered with a grin. “Is that what you mean?” he added, watching how the blush depended on Fenris's face. So, that was a yes then, leaving Hawke a bit smug and more confident than before.
“Probably.” Fenris evaded his question, making him more endearing to him.
“Well, in that case, that won’t be a problem.” he left a short pause before he stretched his hand out all gallantly. “Come on. I’ll show you how to dance. You see, I am quite the talented dancer.”
“No talented dancer would ever say that.” The elf scoffed, yet he could swear there was a hint of a smile showing on his face.
“Alright then, I accept,” Fenris added, setting the wine glass to the side for the moment. “Lead on then, Serah,” he added, his voice dripping with mockery while Hawke couldn’t be any happier at this moment.
It seemed that it wasn’t too foolish to hope after all.
He took his hand carefully, amazed by how warm it felt when he tugged him with him. Hawke felt a bit of reluctance but it eased up right away as the elf let him lead the way towards the dance floor.
Softly, he put them into position, taking Fenris's hands and placing them where they were supposed to be before he took the first step.
It felt like an entirely new world to him. He could feel the elf’s body connected to his, felt the warmth spreading through his skin as they took it slow, leaving time for Fenris to match every single step.
“So, how is it?” Hawke asked softly, feeling the elf’s stiffness as he gently moved them, taking the lead.
“Overrated,” Fenris answered through pressed lips, yet there was still the hint of a smile spreading on his lips. “But not too bad,” he added swiftly because he didn’t want Hawke to feel too bad.
“See, it can be fun.” Hawke was proud, the warm glint in his eyes showing how much he enjoyed this.
“So it can be. But I’d like to think, only with the right company.” Fenris dared to flirt. He had to admit he wasn’t very good when it came down to it, but for this man… maybe he could practice his flattery a bit more.
“Maybe I should make sure you only practice in the right company then,” Hawke answered while holding on tight.
There was nothing that could make him stop sweeping over the dance floor for the next free hours. Too caught up was he in Fenris' intense green eyes, the very heat of his body joining his.
And just for the moment, they both were happy, caught in the dance and only having eyes for the other.
Just as it should be.

Febuwhump 2024
I know, I know, it's basically over, but I wanted to at least post one fic for @febuwhump. I'm not even sure this is whump, I'm clearly not an expert in these things.
This is for 15. "Who did this to you?"
Dragon Age 2, Fenris x Anders
---
The nights in Kirkwall are strangely calm. Roaming groups of bandits can occasionally still be found in Lowtown, but everyone seems to have learned that attacking one of Hawke's group usually ends in fatal injuries.
Fenris walks through Lowtown undisturbed. He's been to the Hanged Man, but neither Hawke nor Varric were there and he Aveline was leaving just as he stepped inside. He paid for an ale but didn't finish it. It lost its taste without company.
Lowtown isn't exactly a pretty place for a walk and night, the stars hidden behind buildings rising too tall and too close to each other, but when he finds himself in front of the rusty elevator to Darktown, he begins to question his sanity. Darktown is the last place anybody should want to be. Still, he steps on the platform, listening to the rattle of rusty chains as it carries him down.
Darktown is quiet, even the poorest robbers and bandits need to sleep sometimes. Fenris walks down the familiar path, jumping over sinkholes and climbing up and down rickety stairs. He really only ever has one destination down here, the mage's clinic, and he goes there more often than he likes to admit. At first, it was to prove that the abomination would definitely turn against them all one day, then he wanted to see the mage use his powers for his own gain, and when none of that happened, he still returned to the clinic again and again, just watching. Not that he would ever let the mage know any of that.
He cannot quite explain why he still watches the mage and frankly, he doesn't want to analyze it.
The lantern above the clinic's door is dark and no light spills out from under the door. Maybe Anders is with Hawke and Varric tonight, it's not like he knows what kind of jobs Hawke takes up nearly every night. When he turns around, something moves in the shadow and he has a dagger out before he even blinks.
"I wants no trouble, Serah," the person says, a boy, probably not older than ten.
Fenris sheathes his dagger and nods. "You should not sneak up on people like this then."
"I was just watching if the healer comes out."
Looking at the dark lantern, Fenris shakes his head. "I don't think he is in."
"But he hasn't left."
"Have you seen him go in?"
"Yeah, and later some other guys came and they left again but the healer has not come out."
The feeling of unease is like a tangible force on his neck. He turns to the clinic's door and presses the handle down. It opens with a creak. The inside is dark, not even a fire alight in the cast iron oven. He carefully steps inside, waiting for his eyes to adjust. The main room looks fine, but towards the side, where Anders' private room is separated by a ratty curtain, one of the wooden cots lies in pieces. He steps carefully, avoiding the sharp splinters. Slipping through the curtain, he finds more destruction, a broken chair, the wooden board Anders used as a table split lengthwise, broken bottles strewn around.
He turns around to leave, when a noise makes him turn back. There, on the wall, what he thought to be just a shadow in the uneven wall, a person is tied up. Before his mind can quite register what he sees, he's already there, cutting rope wrapped around Anders' neck and wrists. He sinks into Fenris' arms, whimpering.
Fenris freezes. Nobody touches him, nobody sinks into his arms, especially not the mage. He doesn't remember the last time he held someone ins his arms. With a careful step, he lowers Anders on the miraculously undamaged bed.
"No, don't leave, please don't leave." Anders clings to him like a man drowning.
"I am not," Fenris says, hesitating only for a moment. "I will not leave."
Anders sinks back, staring at him. "Fenris?"
"Yes."
Turning away from him, Anders rubs his wrists. "I thought... no matter."
Fenris lights a lantern, hanging it on a hook on the wall. Now, with light, he can see that the mage is naked, his whole body screams of injuries. There's blood everywhere, dried in rivulets from knife cuts, spots of dark purple forming on every part of his body from beatings with fists or worse.
"Who did this to you?"
Anders rolls on his side, turning his back to Fenris. He also has cuts on his back, longs strokes with a knife, cutting through old scars. "Who did this?" Fenris asks again, unable to control the anger in his voice.
No answer. Anders pulls a blanket up over his body, hiding the injuries.
"Let me clean your wounds."
"You can go," Anders croaks.
"I will not." Stomping into the main room, he finds a basket with clean cloth and bandages and a flask of water and carries it back to Anders' room. The mage hasn't moved and Fenris kneels next to the bed and wipes the blood on Anders' back away with a wet bandage. "Tell me who did this."
"What? You have to be more specific," Anders spits out. When Fenris doesn't say anything, he glances over his shoulder at him. "The scars are from the circle. Templars don't like it when you run away or contradict them or don't kiss their boots or —" He stops, only hissing through his teeth when Fenris touches a fresh wound.
"Why don't you heal yourself?"
"Can't. They had magebane."
Fenris isn't sure where the anger inside of him comes from, but it burns like fire, like it wants to consume him. Anders stares at him and in the reflection in his eyes he sees his markings glow. "Who were they?"
"It doesn't matter."
Fenris' fingers clench around the bedframe. "It does matter!"
Throwing the blanket away, Anders sits up, grabbing the wet bandage from him. "Why, because you want to know who to thank?"
The flame of anger in his chest turns sharp and white. "Is that what you think of me?"
"Sorry, did I miss something?" Anders wipes over his arms, grimacing at the pain. "I haven't seen you in weeks, last time I checked you hated all mages and especially me. Oh yeah, and the last thing I heard you say was, 'what has magic touched that it didn't spoil?'. Such a nice statement, made me feel all warm and — ahh, fuck!" He throws the bandage away, biting his lip as he cradles his arm.
Fenris stares at him. For weeks he has watched the mage, waiting for him to fulfill his worst expectations, only to see him be compassionate and selfless. You cannot see someone literally give away his possessions and food to children after healing them and still believe he is a murderous magister. But he never told Anders about that, never even spoke to him.
"Why are you still here?" Anders asks, his voice so quiet that he almost didn't hear him.
"I cannot explain," Fenris says equally quiet.
Anders frowns. "If you could find a health potion, that would help."
Fenris looks through the shelf in the main room, cursing himself for his inability to read.
"It's green and has an drawing of elfroot on the label."
He freezes with his hand halfway in the air. "Why does it have a drawing?"
"Not everyone can read," Anders says without looking at him.
Fenris lets out a breath and gives him the health potion, watching how his face relaxes as the pain recedes. "Was it templars who did this?"
Anders laughs, much too light and easily. "Surprisingly no, not this time."
The slight emphasis on 'not this time' has Fenris' hair stand up. "Have templars..." He doesn't even know what to ask.
"No, I'd have to move the clinic if they did. But I'm sure they know where I am, it's just a matter of time until..." Anders makes a vague gesture with his hand.
"They will not have you." He will not allow it.
"Why? Because you want to kill me first?"
There had been a time when he held his sword tighter when the mage was around. But not anymore. But Anders doesn't know that. "I do not wish you dead."
"Since when?"
"Since quite some time."
Anders narrows his eyes. "I don't understand. I'm still a mage and an abomination, in case you've forgotten. Actually —" he holds up his hand watching with a smile as a yellow glow spreads on his palm — "my magic is back." He looks at Fenris, the smile falling from his face. "You don't have to stay, I'm fine and I'll be doing magic now."
"I'm staying."
"Suit yourself. Don't say I didn't warn you."
Anders' magic tingles in his markings and the mage heals his arm and the various cuts. He picks up another piece of cloth, wetting it to clean up the dried blood, but Fenris takes it from is hand and washes him. But Anders puts his hand on his, holding him still.
"Why are you nice to me?"
Fenris stares at Anders' hand on his. "You do not deserve this. You are a good man."
Anders blinks at him, his mouth opening and closing several times.
"Tell me who did this."
"No." Anders picks up the cloth and wipes something from Fenris' cheek. "I don't want you to go around and kill stupid people for me."
"But they hurt you!"
"And now I'm healed." He picks up two cups from the floor, wiping them clean and puts them on the broken board. "I rather have some tea with you."
Fenris lets out a breath. "I would like that too." He will find the people who did this to the mage and make them suffer. But for now, he would rather drink tea with him.

29 specifically for anders & hawke pwease
It never got any easier, the sight of Hawke slumped over in his clinic - one might've thought it would, but no, his heart sank every time as if it were the first.
"Where are you hurt?" he asked, taking every little detail in as quickly as he could: the ashen color of her skin, the bruising along her knuckles, the spatter of blood across her front that, quite frankly, could've been hers but probably wasn't.
She had a real knack for making a wince look like a smile, Hawke did. Grimaces, too. "Why hello Anders, my good chum. Yes, as it turns out I am in a bit of a sorry state today, but I'm so glad neither of us has lost our love of polite smalltalk. Tell me, how are the cats?"
"Hawke."
"Where am I hurt, where am I hurt..." She repeated, and as she slouched further in her chair, the wince began to win out. "A complicated question, that."
As far as days in the clinic went, today was relatively slow; that, however, wasn't his concern. Maybe she didn't have a visible hole in her gut or a strip of burnt flesh to guide his eye, but the rambling was its own symptom, the joking its own telltale sign. He folded his arms and waited, hoping they had time to wait.
"I suppose I've been feeling a bit homesick, lately. That's its own sort of agony, wouldn't you say?"
He took a breath to steady his nerves, letting her purge it from her system.
"And I've been having the strangest twinge in my shoulders at night. Terribly annoying."
Oh, what he would've given to have any of the others there, if only to hold her down and cover her mouth. Not that it would've stopped this, of course, but experience had taught him it would slow her down enough for him to at least begin healing her.
"Sometimes, when I bend over too quickly, my head goes terribly spinny, and - "
"Tell me where you're hurt," he interrupted, caught (as he so often was) between abject exasperation and the maddening urge to laugh, "and be specific."
She made a grand show of widening her eyes and pressing a hand to her chest. "Why serah! You should've said that from the start! Here I am, prattling on like some sort of loon." Then, clearly proud of herself despite the pain she must've been in, she brought her other hand out from behind her back, offering it to him. "I do think these are broken," she said of her fingers, three of which were knocked into angles he'd never seen before. "But I was hoping for a more professional opinion."
It never got any easier, seeing Hawke in his clinic, but Maker's breath, it never got old.

I remember a while back, you said you were watching a friend play Final Fantasy 13-2. I was wondering if you kept up with that and/or had any other opinions on the game, I'm kinda deep in the FFXIII mines and I'm really interested in reading people's opinions about the games at the moment.
Also wanted to ask, do you have any experience with Lightning Returns? I've been playing it for the first time lately, and boy it is A Doozy
I had actually played it entirely myself a few years before.
I used to feel more strongly about it but now I just think it's a poorly executed story, but the gameplay was comfortable enough for me to get 100 hours. I was gonna keep playing to try to get all the areas but I had to stop cause I may as well have started over.
I don't really like the characters and I feel like nothing in the story has any impact. It gives me this vibe that Lightning is the real main character of the game despite not being present most of it. Like Serah is there to move the story along and Noel is a middle-man protagonist, the guy the game should've been about but whatever?
I missed anything in the story with Vanille and Fang due to how the rifts work.
Someone told me that Serah is written the way she is because she's supposed to be a stand-in for the player. That's why she asks questions about the characters from the previous game despite you never seeing her interact with them?
Also, I really feel like Snow and Serah give off strong brother-sister vibes more than being a couple. Probably how they don't really seem hung up on being split up, like their interaction is a bit empty?
I didn't play the DLC but it feels like they wanted Sazh to just never win in his personal objectives.
I've actually avoided learning more about Lightning Returns despite knowing the general set-up.

Any games missing are because I don't know them that well/didn't finish them/there aren't enough female characters in the first place/etc.
(also I feel it needs to be said, I left Agrias off of FFT and skipped FFV entirely because both she and Faris are already butch so I would just be drawing them normally lol not that I mind!! I probably will add Agrias with Ovelia if I do end up doing FFT though c: )
and of course I already did ff8!

Okay but like,
In the beginning of the game, Nora (Estheim) is killed by a Skytank explosion behind her while she's kneeling to help Snow after saving his life.
Tumblr media
There are those who hate on the scene for quickly killing her off, but like man that's a woman who just went on vacation with her son and ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time, who was brave enough to join the other Purge victims in trying to fight back because yes, she's a mom, but she'd rather go out fighting with the people actually willing to help keep them alive in this desperate situation where there own government and entire planet turned against them for no reason other than bad luck.
Snow failed to save her because he didn't manage to keep his grip on her; Nora was injured and she gave him her last request because she had given up at that point. Snow looks at his hand in the aftermath because letting Nora fall alone was his biggest mistake.
Some point out that Snow survived the exact same fall as Nora, but barring the fact that he's a 6 foot 7 inch man who is also a fit fighter and she is a mother who lives in a peaceful city, the idea is actually supposed to be that if Snow hadn't let her go and had shielded her body with his - MAYBE SHE WOULD HAVE SURVIVED.
We don't know, certainly, and Snow is definitely still injured after his fall and stumbles as he gets up. He's traumatized by all of the people who died under his command; NORA the gang is equipped to fight, but they've never fought in an actual war before, much less against their own government. But Nora is the one who died closest to him, to the point that she told him she had a son she wanted him to protect. He needs to keep going for Serah, but he and Gadot specifically go and check to make sure all the kids are okay - under the logic that if he instructs his crew to keep all of the kids safe, that'll keep Nora's son safe by default. He can't do any more than that for her, and it's killing him, but he has to shove it down because there are more people - especially the one he loves - relying on him to keep going.
And then he has to keep going. He uses Serah's wishes to give himself a reason to keep going. No time to process his guilt because he has to keep going.
But then, the beautiful scene in Palumpolum happens.
Tumblr media
Hope is blasted by a Skytank explosion from behind as he's kneeling to end Snow's life, a direct parallel to how Nora DIED.
In that moment, Snow doesn't care that Hope is trying to kill him. This time, he doesn't hesitate to dive off the ledge after Hope to catch him and shield him with his body and make sure that Hope isn't falling out of his grip. The fall is brutal, Snow is nearly crippled from the damage, but Hope is ALIVE, and can you imagine how that makes Snow feel?
Sure, the drop was probably shorter than in the Hanging Edge, but beyond the regular reaction to Snow finally facing his guilt and acknowledging he was running, still picking himself up and dragging Hope up a ladder back to the apartment levels, I just love the parallels in that scene. Snow finally got to save Nora's son, and he's fully willing to face the consequences of his actions.
Then, Hope is able to come to terms with his own running and denial. He had admitted multiple times that killing Snow won't bring her back, but he needed to keep going. And Snow knew his optimistic attitude led people to their deaths and smiling even in horrible situations was awful from other (Hope's) perspectives, but he had to keep going.
Don't ever tell me that there aren't great character arcs, developments, and nuances in FF XIII.

I completed FFXVI today! Some comments under the cut 👀
I really enjoyed the game, I’m gonna start a NG+ soon! A wonderful story!
Clive is surely one of my favorite protagonist of the series. He’s so kind and caring and also so badass. He truly is amazing, I love his relationship with pretty much every character. He truly wants to make the world a better place for everyone.
But honestly, every character in the game iinteresting. Joshua, Jill, Cid, Dion. I wish Dion could officially join the team for quests though, and I’d love more screentime for Mid because she’s so great! Cid is the best Cid of the series!
The relationship between Clive and Joshua is incredible. It’s similar to Lightning and Serah, but different at the same time. I was so exciting for their reunion and for them teaming up!
The romance between Clive and Jill feels so natural. We know from the beginning they will be together, but it’s just heartwarming. I also lowkey ship Joshua and Mid tbh
MY BOY TORGAL. His sidequest made me cry. Such a loyal partner.
I love the Eikons. It’s so different than in the other games of the series, with the Dominants and everything. Very original!
Clive makes me think of Terra so much and I love it! They both need to understand what their powers truly are and how to use them, just like they both need to accept them.
That’s one the the things that makes me think Clive probably survives. Along with Jill smiling and Torgal stopping crying and “the dawn will bring you back to me” thing, for me, it’s similar to when Terra’s powers as a half-esper fade at the end of the game, but then her “human” feelings manage to make her survive. With Joshua’s speech right before the final battle, it makes me think something similar happens to Clive, even if he maybe loses his arm entirely or partially. The fact that he’s the narrator of the events implies he survived, too.
I think Dion is dead, unfortunately. He was willing to die to redeem himself. I also think Joshua is dead and that Clive used his name for the book as a tribute to him like he did with Cid, or he used some things Joshua already started writing and finished it. But I’d love to think the three of them survived 😭
That being said, I don’t like open ending. I prefer when everything is clear. LOL.
Another thing: I would have liked to play other characters than Clive sometimes, especially Joshua and Jill. There are moments in the game it would have made sense I think.

I'm very happy I found your blog! I absolutely ADORE ff13. The story, the characters, the mythos... it's all so compelling to me. I get frustrated whenever I see people hate on this game because I honestly do not understand why some claim it's the worst ff in existence? I totally get that the combat is not everyone's cup of tea (I personally love it) and that the linearity can be tedious to players who enjoy big open worlds, but in terms of the story itself and its characters I really can't comprehend what all the negative backlash is about. Which sucks because I truly would like to understand where the hate is coming from. My only major criticism is that the exposition could have been better executed, since a lot of it is hidden in the datalog entries. But other than that, I think the characters are very complex and the way the story unravels around them is a wonder to experience. Also as a side note, I can't believe people still hate Hope and accuse him of being annoying and useless when he's arguably the character that evolves and shows the most growth in the entire game 😭 It's almost as if the people who hate on him didn't finish the game. But yeah, I was wondering if you have any criticisms regarding ff13? I'm very interested in your opinion!
GODDD i know right??? subjective opinion is all fine and dandy, but it's the people that claim the game is objectively bad that really frustrate me 😭 ESPECIALLY when they shit on any of the characters (hope my boy </3) because honestly??? ffxiii has THE best character arcs in the whole franchise and that's a hill i'll die on
as for criticisms? i actually do have some, believe it or not fdjsmf
as much as i personally love the gameplay i gotta admit i don't like how slow-paced it can be. boss fights are really really fun, but fighting regular mob enemies when you're grinding (and you really do need to grind a lot after reaching pulse) can get real tedious
i like that not everything is told to us directly and that we have to figure out a lot of stuff on our own, but i do dislike how some important information in the datalogs are not really brought up in the game itself. like the first time i played xiii-2 i was so confused when serah mentioned being saved by vanille once? and then in 2021-ish when i replayed xiii again and read the datalogs i saw that they actually wrote that vanille and fang carried serah out of the vestige after she was turned l'cie and i just!! why was that not at least hinted at some more!!
also, they did vanille's english voice actor so dirty 😭 she does such an amazing job in the sequels and i don't understand why the english localization team made her do all those noises in xiii lmao
speaking of vanille, i'm also really disappointed that her and lightning barely interact!!!!! they're the two most important characters in the first game but they probably have the least interactions together out of any other pair in the group and it bugs me so much ashdfjms

Safety Foam (Final Rose)
"You know,” Vanille drawled. “We probably should have known better than to think that foam weapons would let our sisters work out their problems without hurting each other.”
Serah nodded. “We underestimated their idiocy.”
“Come on, you bitch!” Fang growled, waving her foam sword around. There was enough Aura around it to let it cut a building in half. “Let’s go!”
“Bitch, please,” Lightning scoffed. “You want to fight me with a sword?” Her own foam sword was surrounded by a similar amount of Aura. “Prepare to die.”
Lumina eyed the devastation around her. Thankfully, this part of the city was supposed to be demolished anyway, but still...
“And did we learn anything from this?” she asked, bopping both Vanille and Serah over the head with a foam sword.
“That Lightning and Fang are idiots who will destroy multiple buildings with foam weapons just to one up each other?”

@protagneptune liked for a Serah birthday starter
“You’re inviting me to a party that my friends are holding me. How did that happen? Actually nevermind, I think Zelia would find it funny to do something like that. She probably find it funny,” Serah replied while looking at the other curiously. She was unsure, but the paladin wasn’t against the idea. Just surprised by the other, and how she got involved.

I just finished Parsimony and I loved it! I originally started reading it when you first published it, but IRL stuff got in the way so I've been sitting in its suspense for god knows how long. I loved the way Hope's conflict of believing that he was taking another's place, and Lightning calling him out like. "this is the way it is, you're getting too hung up on your belief that it can't be who you are now that's actually real."
It's definitely inspiring me to think about how Hope and Lightning idk will always find a connection to each other? That they're engrained in each other's being (esp quite literally wrt Hope & Light's knife) and that even so they can pick up where they left off. I'm also curious abt the explicit repercussions of the "confirmation" Hope gave and how it affected Light. Moreso as a fun thought experiment.
I'm also wondering what it would be like if their roles were reversed, especially bc Lightning harbored such heavy guilt over Serah and is self-sacrificial for those she cares about.
I'd ask about your thoughts on ppl making works inspired by any of yours, but my backlog of wips is.... well, we don't talk about that...
I've had an incredibly shitty week so far and I'm teetering on the edge of a migraine, but I swear this message just cured me and made everything better ;____; THANK YOU THIS IS SO SWEET <333333333333
I'm so glad you enjoyed the fic! I know way too much about fics sitting in suspense, yall don't even want to KNOW how many open tabs are on my phone lmaaaao
the whole fic probably would've been way more dramatic if their roles had been reversed - partially because, like you said, Lightning's so self-sacrificial, but also because it'd take her a billion years to even accept that she ended up having ~*feelings*~ for Hope ;D I'm still convinced that it didn't really hit her until the end of LR, when he pulls her out of the darkness. although if she'd seen him in person in his fabulous adult body before then...(͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) my wip backlog is probably just as bad, if not worse lolol but I would LOVE to see works inspired by mine!!! it'd be an honor that something I did would be so inspirational <33333 but seriously, thank you SO much again for this message <33333 I really needed it and I'm so grateful you took the time to reach out just to tell me that you loved the fic!

An Intimate Night
During the pandemic, there wasn't much opportunity to attend music concerts. After all, there was a virus going around. As countries reopen with COVID-19 relegated to the rear view mirror, there has been a return of nighttime entertainment in the last few years. Of note for this humble blogger has been the return of musicals. Be that 9-5, featuring the songs of our favourite country singer: Dolly Parton, to Six and the Rocky Horror Show.
In the city itself, there have been a few smaller candlelit concerts with music ranging from movies to anime. A Distant Worlds hasn't graced the shores of Australia since 2017. And while we had a Kingdom Hearts music concert in 2019, it has certainly been quite a few years since I've gotten to enjoy a proper orchestra playing my favourite songs from a couple of my favourite franchises live.
No longer!
Given advanced notice by Facebook, I co-opted my good friend, @bleachpanda into the proceedings. It helped that the New World concert fell very close to her birthday. But unlike previous New Worlds that had been held at Chatswood Concourse, this time round, the two of us would enjoy the music from Final Fantasy at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
A place that I'd been to in my youth. Back when I was still being graded for piano and hadn't visited in a very long time.
After picking up two Krispy Kreme donuts and getting overcharged (for some reason, they charged me the price of a 4-donut box and I didn't realise it until I checked my bank balance the next day), I picked up @bleachpanda at Wynyard train station in the heart of the CBD. From there, we headed eastwards towards the State Library.
Despite the fact that we had bought tickets for the 6PM showing, eschewing dinner (which we ended up grabbing later anyways), there were still plenty of people in attendance. @bleachpanda and I were not the only music starved Final Fantasy fans out there.
And what a riveting opening number that the smaller chamber orchestra started off with! As soon as I heard the first few notes, a grin split my face from ear to ear. After all, this was Valse di Fantastica!
What followed next were a mix of songs both old and new.
I won't be able to put them in exact order as I thought it rude to pull out my phone and start recording the names but barring two songs from Final Fantasy XIV, I managed to remember most of them. I do believe one of them MAY have been Insatiable from the Shadowbrings DLC. The other was a more jazzy piece that I cannot, for the life of me, recall the name of. Probably because I should have played more of Final Fantasy XIV, but I digress.
The other songs that caught my attention were Town Theme from the first Final Fantasy. Then we had Besaid from Final Fantasy X, which I immediately recognised, followed by Heaven's Tower from Final Fantasy XI.
Then we had a variety of different songs. Unfortunately for @bleachpanda, none of them proved capable of keeping her engaged. These included Lenna's Theme from Final Fantasy V, Atonement from Final Fantasy XIII, Dark World from Final Fantasy VI and Melancholia from Final Fantasy XV.
Finally, in order to keep my poor friend awake, the orchestra played Force Your Way from Final Fantasy VIII along with a piece from @bleachpanda's favourite Final Fantasy game: IX. Except of course, A Place to Call Home was rudely cut short with a Final Fantasy XIV song.
We even got to hear the conductor, Eric Roth, sing when Serah's theme was played. And in fact, Eric Roth was a very memorable conductor as he gallivanted around the stage. Well, gallivant isn't quite the word either. He...danced? Or rather, conducted with the entirety of his body. From stamping his feet to waving his arms around as a means to tell the orchestra to add more oomph to a piece or to keep it more quiet.
Before too long, the concert came to an end. As it did, we were treated with several classic: Zanarkand, One-winged Angel, Victory Fanfare and Chocobo Medley. And to justify the acoustic guitar that they brought in we also heard a guitar solo of the main theme from the first Final Fantasy.
While it was no Distant Worlds, it was certainly a night that brought back a flood of memories of attending these concerts in the past. And, if anything else, was a sign that things in the world were finally returning to a state of normalcy. Whether we were ready for it or not.
