The Jasmine Throne
&
The Oleander Sword
Author: Tasha Suri
Tumblr media
Genre: fantasy
Format: novel
Serie: yes, named The Burning Kingdoms. Third and last book (The Lotus Empire) out in November.
Editions: Orbit
Romance: wlw, slow burn, no love triangle.
Other representation(s): brown-skinned characters (full cast) as the story takes place in a country inspired by India.
TW: forced captivity, non consensual drug use, feminicides, death by fire, death by various means, grief, hallucinations, fratricide, verbal et physical abuse on a child by her brother, religious fanatism, sexism, systemic homophobia, body horror, war.
Rating: 8/10
Tea association: a chai in the pure Indian tradition, the heat of the spices and the strength of the black tea, softened by the milk. Or a jasmine tea for the empress and for the the plants Priya grows.
.
Synopsis of The Jasmine Throne:
Author of Empire of Sand and Realm of Ash Tasha Suri's The Jasmine Throne, beginning a new trilogy set in a world inspired by the history and epics of India, in which a captive princess and a maidservant in possession of forbidden magic become unlikely allies on a dark journey to save their empire from the princess's traitor brother.
Imprisoned by her dictator brother, Malini spends her days in isolation in the Hirana: an ancient temple that was once the source of the powerful, magical deathless waters — but is now little more than a decaying ruin.
Priya is a maidservant, one among several who make the treacherous journey to the top of the Hirana every night to clean Malini’s chambers. She is happy to be an anonymous drudge, so long as it keeps anyone from guessing the dangerous secret she hides.
But when Malini accidentally bears witness to Priya’s true nature, their destinies become irrevocably tangled. One is a vengeful princess seeking to depose her brother from his throne. The other is a priestess seeking to find her family. Together, they will change the fate of an empire.
.
My thoughts:
Malini and Priya aren't the only characters we'll be following in this epic tapestry of a story. Bhumika, the last temple sister of Priya still alive is an important part of the story, as is Ashok, the third and last temple child alive with the other two girls. Rao often gives a different perspective and is an important support character. A handful of other characters give their point of view through out the two books. All of them combined tell us this story of war.
Because war, along with religion, is the central theme of those books. Some of the characters fight for power, other for survival. Some fight for their loved ones, other for freedom and their way of life.
The first book is about survival and escape. Getting to safety. Cutting a deal. Many deals actually. The characters want freedom and peace, but are not against fighting for it.
The second book is all about war. About the rise of an empress and the fall of an emperor, mirroring what happens in Ahiranya.
The third book will probably be about war too, but against a far greater enemy.
With all those struggles going on, there's not that much room for anything else, but it's there. Emotions. Love. Two women falling for each other in the midst of chaos. A mother cherishing her infant daughter. Friendship and brotherhood. But there's also grief, longing, hate, terror.
Faith and magic are also central themes in the books. Both always means sacrifice, but that sacrifice has to be done by a willing person. Magic comes from that willing sacrifice. However, sometimes the person seeking power doesn't know what it would cost them. Sometimes it's their life, sometimes their soul, or even their body. But it's never without a price.
As the plot unfold in front of you, you realise that not everything is morally clear cut. You realise that what you thought you knew about this or that was wrong, or wasn't as simple as you previously thought. The plot is beautifully woven, and I can't wait to finally read the last book. I feel like it's gonna be a killer!
.
A word about the cover art:
I'm not the biggest fan of the first book cover, which if I'm not mistaken, depicts Priya.
The second book cover is better, showing Malini with a murderous look her saber in her hand, though it's a little too green to my taste.
The last book cover though... It's stupendous! The colors, the details, the movements, the poses, everything is eye-catching. Priya in her green sari has lotus flowers growing in her hands and is surrounded by her greens. Malini in the back in her white and gold sari, the colors or Paridjat, is surrounded by fire, wielding fire. From what the ending of the Oleander Sword is hinting, that cover art seems really fitting for what's ahead!

hcs or a drabble for holidays w the baavira fam? they were playing christmas music on the radio today
The Winter Solstice festival is a pretty big holiday in the northern parts of the Earth Kingdom Empire Republic. It was never really a thing in Zaofu; Suyin found the traditional feast days folksy and agrarian, so Kuvira and Baatar never put much thought into them.
In Ba Sing Se, however, the holiday is taken very seriously. Weeks before the solstice, street vendors are out selling sweet buns decorated with badgermoles and traditional outfits are displayed in storefront windows. Families gather in one household (usually that of the wealthiest relatives) and stay that way until the new year. Everywhere you turn in the city, there’s a tournament or an opera or a dance or a concert.
During the first solstice after they stabilized Ba Sing Se, so many grannies from the lower and middle rings brought them sweets and charms for good fortune, and that experience pretty much warmed Kuvira up to the holiday.
A year later, some industrious vendor (who may or may not have been bankrolled by Varrick) started making sweet buns with Kuvira’s face on them in addition to the traditional badgermole ones. The rationale is that “the moles have always been the protectors of the Earth Kingdom.” Kuvira is uncharacteristically speechless when she sees them; she could not believe that anyone put that much thought into her beauty mark. Baatar finds them hilarious and buys one.
After the fall of the Empire and the rise of the Republic (it feels like I’m talking about Star Wars), in the weeks leading up to the holiday, Kuvira always wakes up super early to get ahead on work so that she can give her kids her full attention during the festival days (Raava knows Priya will call her out on her shit if she doesn’t)
One year in particular, when Kuvira heads down to her study at some unholy hour, she finds her two oldest daughters already downstairs. Avani (age 10) is training for a youth earthbending tournament, and Priya (age 8) is practicing for a dance recital.
Kuvira just looks at them, both so serious and focused, and is like “I made you like this, didn’t I?” She sees no better course of action than to have them get dressed and take them into the city for milk tea and cakes. It becomes a tradition for the three of them to wake up early and wander around the solstice markets before they get too crowded.
Baatar, being the house husband that he is, is in charge of decorating the estate for the holidays. Shreya helps, of course. At the beginning it was purely for the kids’ benefit, but eventually it becomes a point of pride for their house to look better than everyone else’s. (Wu has hired multiple architects and interior designers to make the royal solstice garden the best one in the city, but it’s literally never worked out for him)

fuck it... oc drink hcs
lily: pretty well rounded, actually. will drink a lot of straight water first and foremost, 8 cups, but coffee or hot chocolate in the morning, milk at night, sometimes tea to indulge mako etc etc. the one caveat is that she drinks all of these scalding hot. broiling hot. keeps a thermos w her at all times. she does drink soda cold but only because hot soda is something not even she would try
nithya: just water. sometimes even flavored if she’s feeling frisky but she doesn’t really drink much else. maybe hot chocolate and a little bit of milky coffee if it’s cold outside
kyoko: as an athlete she only drinks those pseudo fruity sugary gatorade type drinks but once she probably tried a little bit of whisky at a party and before she turned 21 skimmed off her dad’s batch whenever she could. also likes undiluted black coffee but it has to be that weird nitro cold brew or whatever it’s called
mako: hot tea. usually just black or green. sometimes drinks those crimes against nature celestial seasoning mfs too for fun. likes it w a little bit of sugar and a little bit of milk, calls it a cuppa like a brit, its very aesthetique
sarah: okay there’s this old roman drink called posca that’s basically just red wine vinegar and water and sometimes you can add honey too it (ive made it a couple times) and it works as an electrolyte provider and what i’m saying is that sarah read about this ancient roman beverage once when she was 13 and decided to drink it for the rest of her life. gene and lily have pointed how horrendous the idea of drinking vinegar is about 500 times but she doesn’t care she just sees it as living on the edge
gene: water. like lots of water. will drink rainwater if she can. no flavoring no added stuff just pure water. might add a bit of pasta water to her usual glass for the minerals but thats it.
priya: she used to drink a lot of orange juice when she was younger but now that she’s grown she’s progressed to vodka. she gets the cheap stuff but bought a brita filter for it. adds vodka to aforementioned orange juice when she wants to reminisce.
jeremy: is specific to the very shade of how much milk he wants his coffee to have. sometimes if he’s back at home he’ll have a drop or two of gin but he’s not fond of drinking at all whether it be alcoholic or not. has passed out from dehydration at least 2 times

May we have a recap, please? :)
**spoilers for panic at the art show and home for the holidays**
OK people. I actually don’t have a ton of commentary on these two so I’m gonna try and keep it (relatively) short and sweet [Edit from Future Me: Failed Step 1].
Also, iirc, this is the week Dropout starts streaming new Fantasy High eps on Wednesdays which is very dope and I am very excited for. I probably won’t do full on recaps like I do for normal eps because, lbr, I don’t strictly have the time to be recapping these eps at all and it’s pure stubbornness that keeps me from making wiser time management decisions. But, rest assured, if I have an Opinion, you will hear it whether you want to or not.
Anyway, on with the show.
Last recap, I mentioned that this ep was giving me Aelwen house party vibes and now it reminds me of that ep in another way: Everyone rolled like TRASH almost the entire ep. It was so frustrating! They barely got any hits in until like halfway through the ep.
(Aw man, I just realized I’m gonna have to remember which spelling of Aelwen is correct again now that FH is coming back.)
I love how Murph is immediately like, “I need to make sure my wife doesn’t die during this fight avenging her fictional husband.”
Isabella also has Aelwen’s trick of poofing around the battlefield which is annoying as hell (ha) for the group.
Siobhan hilariously casts fear on Priya just to be spiteful. I thought she was doing it to help the evac process but no. It was a purely spiteful action. Bless.
When Kug turns into an ape he, of course, turns into *the* NY ape, King Kong.
“I roll a nat 20 on an epic shit.”
When Brennan was describing Kingston’s spectral New Yorker Guardians I was already thinking about that one part of Spiderman 2 (the OG Toby Mac version) and then he straight up said, “You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us,” and I lost it.
“Deny the stairs the pleasure of my feet.” Emily is a poet.
I want to know what makes a pigeon spicy more than anything.
The fact that Brennan killed Ox AGAIN and then immediately looked into the camera and let the audience know the dog was fine because he clearly Oracle stared into the future between eps and saw the entire internet sharpening their pitchforks  was so funny.
About midway through the ep, Pete tries and fails to send Isabella back to hell and Isabella starts monologing about her plans and connection with Robert Moses (she stole the list from Santa and is/was gonna marry Moses apparently). I wonder if Brennan was like, “These players are for sure gonna murder her without getting any useful info out of her unless she goes full Bond Villain right now.”
And, proving my point, Emily immediately does 56 points of damage, royally f-ing Isabella up.
This is a really civilian heavy fight which feels weird in a way the FH fights never did. Like, these aren’t even civilians who live in an adventuring town in a fantasy world. These are just normal ass civilians in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Pete fails a wild magic roll after failing to teleport into the building and then gets a choice of getting really strong (which prob would have let him bust down the door) or to teleport in (which is what he does and exactly what he wanted). Very clutch when the dice rolls play into the story like that.
Kingston lightning bolts Isabella’s hair off which is just malicious but also totally called for.
On her next turn, Sophie gets hurt on purpose to get low enough to activate her ring, lets her hair burn for long enough to shorten it to a cute bob, insults Isabella, then knocks her tf out.
I love that Emily took one of her teeth (a seemingly crazy move) and when called out by Lou was like, “It’s a link to Robert Moses” (a completely reasonable answer). That’s the Axford one-two punch.
I didn’t mention it before but, Willie the golem is here, first immobile but then brought back by Misty. Post fight, he says he was somehow brought here by one of the evil factions of the city and says they’ll talk about it later. Also, Misty makes out with him (DON’T KINKSHAME HER).
With a high insight roll, Kingston is able to deduce that the group was ambushed (though not by Priya) and that their victory was a really important one for the fate of the city.
(Sidenote: The amount that Pete is Over Priya in this ep is so funny.)
Back at Wally’s (which is where Kug is now staying) Wally has gotten Kug a dog bed to sleep in and fancy charcuterie cheese because he and Ricky are the only pure-hearted people in NYC.
At the same time, Pete and Kingston have a very sweet heart to heart and then settle down at Kingston’s place to chill and listen to jazz. Idk how else we expected this to resolve, considering this is a Brennan Lee Mulligan DM’d show where the sacred pillars are Teamwork, Friendship, Communication, and Making up an NPC on the Fly Because One of Your PC’s Decided to do an Insane Thing.
Next up is the Christmas ep and Brennan, Emily, and Zac are in sweaters for the occasion.
Well, actually it’s the 21st and Emily immediately clocks that that’s the solstice.
Are cookies the good carb?/Absolutely not. But have fun with your life. (I love Ricky’s soft jock energy.)
“I run deliveries,” Pete says to Kingston’s parents, not technically lying but also not being completely truthful. Misty would be proud.
Going over to Misty, it seems pretty clear at this point (and it’s confirmed in the promo for next ep) that Misty’s fairy business is some kind of de-aging/reincarnation for herself. I wonder how many of these she’s done so far. She said she’s been around for, what? 200, 300 years? Assuming she’s been doing then reincarnations at about 65-70 years old and she reincarnates to around 25? Maybe 6 times? Idk. Just spitballing.
Saucer of milk to keep the faeries from stealing her (non-existing) children. Faerie lore is wild y'all.
Did you take another level of warlock?/Yeah bitch.
The fact that since Sophie has joined a monastery, she’s only taken Warlock levels and no Monk levels is very funny from a story perspective. It’s like, she finally comes to this sacred place to be trained to her full potential and she’s just spending what should be her sparring time playing with her cat in exchange for spells. Wild.
Emily’s cat-like, self-satisfied grin when Brennan is like, “So you just jerry-rigged yourself clairvoyance powers, huh?” is so good.
And she did it on the fly because Emily Axford is winning D&D. There are no points but she’s winning.
So, uh, Emily does, two things, very in character right after the other:
Thing number one: She send her unseen servant to spy on her family. Her dad seems hardline, “F, Dale. Whatever. Family first. She needs to get over it.” On the other side of the spectrum is her mom who is very upset about the whole affair with her siblings falling in the middle.
The second thing she does, very casually I might add, is have her unseen servant BURN DOWN HER HOUSE SO SHE CAN COMMIT INSURANCE FRAUD.
EMILY
Everyone loses their minds and rightfully so. What a wild-ass swing that no one could have seen coming. I love it.
“I look in my backpack which is now my home[…]"
I almost forgot that Ricky was a fire fighter who would not abide that nonsense until Brennan decided to cut to him.
Ricky just dolphin swims across the Hudson in 2.5 mins to go put out the fire that Sophie set. Amazing.
Ally mocking Emily/Sophie: Truthfully, I don’t know what happened.
"I love John McClane, because he loves his wife.” WALLY
Wally: Oh we’re gonna tell a lie on Christmas.
“This is what winning looks like.”
I would really like to know what trace stuff what on the drugs Pete got from 7 but Ally rolled too low to figure it out.
“I disassociate fully."
Well it took him a long ass time but glad to have Pete on the selling drugs to kids is bad train. Choo-choo, dude.
7 saying you can hack in real life in reference to his AK-47 has the same energy as Hardison using the word hack in literally any semi-weird episode of Leverage.
SOCIAL MEDIA IS VOLUNTARY PANOPTICON
So Kug goes with Wally to David’s house disguised as a dog and, despite that, blurts out that he’s his dad immediately. Well, he tries to. The Umbral Arcana stops him, unfortunately.
"I lick my son’s face.” KUUUUG.
Sophie showing up with a raw goose and hellish rebuking it is so metal and it’s a shame no one got to appreciate it.
Me when Sophie’s Mom changes into black top in solidarity for Sophie’s mourning: F EVERY OTHER NON-SOPHIE BICICLETA. I RESPECT YOU.
Kingston is hustling very hard to get his man Pete a job which is a very Kingston move. That’s how guys like that show affection.
Didn’t mention it before but Kingston’s parents and Mom specifically adopting Pete is very cute.
Sidenote: Idk what 7 was talking about Pete trying to stay low profile. He wears a cowboy hat (now a ZEBRA STRIPED one, courtesy of Kingston). I think the subtlety train has sailed my guy.
Esther shows up at the firehouse, carrying presents for her mom and grandma and looking for Ricky. The says that she’s kinda dealing with something and it feels good to be around him (beat) magically speaking. Sure. I’m gonna keep my Hercules soundtrack on hand just in case anyway.
I think Ricky is the only person who, with no pretense, could give his crush a sexy calendar featuring him.
Anyway, turns out Esther’s mom and grandma are the furies of Tompkins Square and she’s fated to join them or something.
Esther causally: I defy you, I defy the prophecy.
The fury thing would explain why Esther’s mom would have cursed Kug. They are famously magical punishers.
Ricky is a magically certified Good Boy but we been knew.
Zac’s restraint to respect Esther’s personal boundaries in lieu of getting a lore drop to stay true to Ricky’s character is amazing. Mad props.
So we slide over to Misty’s Christmas party which Stephen Sondhein is attending and him having a character card kinda killed me.
There’s a post on tumblr somewhere about playing faerie  incapability for impoliteness against a vampires need to be invited in and that’s what I thought about when Moses and his vamp friends showed up at Misty’s house.
Robert tries to talk Misty into striking a deal with him for protection from Titania. She’s very much not having it.
“You know Robert, I love a comedy and I love a farce. I’d like to remind you of who it is that started this and it’s not me and it’s not my friends but I can assure you Robert Moses that we will be the ones to end it if you do not. Do you understand me?” Damn. That’s a mic drop from Misty.
[As I’m editing this, I’m realizing I somehow lost a BIG chunk of text. I’m not gonna write it all up again but the Cliffnotes are as follows:
Between the Solstice and Christmas, the gang goes Grand Central Station to see the clockwork gnomes that live there because trouble is apparently afoot. Some size changing nonsense happens and Pete shoots a dog (with mini bullets, the dog is fine). Lou is enchanted even though Kingston is not (a common theme with him). Ally and Emily are on the same nonsense wavelength (as usual).
There are dope magical dragon trains under Grand Central Station that go to the shadow realm which is a place I’d like to know about. Kingston has never seen these trains before even though you’d really think he would have.
Murph says Gnome Rights which is wild if you know what Naddpod is like.
Anyway, the high priestess of the gnomes passed out the other day and they figure out it was due to pixie magic which is suspicious. They also know they pixies have access to a “time stone” which leads me to believe that it’s Brennan and not Aguefort who thinks that Chronomancy is the most powerful magic of all.
Sophie and Jackson go to Dale’s grave on Christmas. Jackson explains that the Order of the Concrete Fist is basically a literal school of hard knocks. A counterbalance to all the reach for the stars dreaminess that comes with NYC.
Dale was their chosen one who was supposed to stop the monastery from falling when some unspecified badness crossed over to this side, but when he went to the place where he was supposed to get guidance, there was no one there (clearly tying in to what Dale said to Sophie last time they talked. I wonder what she needs to get to the top of? Empire State maybe?).
Watching Murph watching Emily, his real life spouse, play at grief for her fictional husband and do some truly insane things is so funny because you can clearly see him thinking, “I am married to this woman,” which, in fairness, is probably the main thing he’s thinking when he’s playing D&D with Emily.
I’m probably missing something but that’s all I remember. Back to post-Christmas!]
So it’s opening night at Misty’s show and, somehow, Ricky’s first show ever.
I love that Don Confetti is there because of Siobhan’s offhanded comment for a handful of eps ago about him being a supporter of the arts.
Anyway, everything is going great until the second act when Titania busts in through the mirror which is *not* is storage as Misty requested but on stage. It’s a theater fight, y'all! And not the West Side Story kind although if that doesn’t come up I will be very surprised.
“Let’s kill Titania!” –Misty in the promo
Just going straight to 11, huh Misty?
See y'all then!

Christmas Date
Nathaniel - Rayan - Priya - Hyun
Castiel
"Hey. If you aren't busy this morning could you come over for a bit? I could use your help with something." You see this text message from Castiel when you wake up around 11 in the morning.
"Yeah, I can. I'm free until 2:30. What did you need help with?" You text back, curiousity at full peak as your brain slowly wakes up. Why would Cas want your help?
"Cool. I'll text you the address. Just come over whenever you're ready."
You stare at your phone for a few seconds, but the only message that comes through is the one with the address. You wonder if he ignored the ladder part of your text on purpose but decide to get ready anyway.
After you are dressed and have packed your bag, you look at the address again. It sounds familiar but you still have to GPS it. As you begin to recognize the location on the screen, nostalgia hits as you think about the place you first got to "know" Castiel. Your face reddens as you recall that night, but you quickly put the memory away to set out on your walk.
As you are walking, you pass a liquor store and decide it might be best not to show up empty handed. You buy a pack of pricey craft beer and set back on your journey. The memory of your steamy nights at his parents' come back to mind when the building comes to view. But like a seasoned pro, you bottle them back up. No sense in reading the past when you are ready to write out your future.
You press the intercom and Castiel let's you in. You walk a flight of steps until you come to the apartment door. You give a gentle knock and hear him approach from the other side before the door opens.
"Hi. That was quick." He says as he helps you take off your jacket.
"Yeah, this wasn't as far of a walk as I remembered." You hand him the package of beer before taking off your boots and setting your bag beside it.
He examines the label on the box while you do this. "Dragons milk? How'd you know I like this?"
"I do my homework." You say giving him a playful wink.
"I don't doubt that." The redhead says as you catch his smoldering gaze roaming over your figure. You're wearing a low cut white v-neck shirt, blue highwaist jeans with slits at the knees, and a long black fuzzy cardigan. You're lovely mane is fishtailed into a single braid and a black velvety choker wraps around your neck. You bite back a smile, confident you know what he's thinking. And as cute and casual as you are, you feel a bit over dressed. Castiel is wearing a black band T with gray joggers. His red locks pulled into a messy ponytail.
"So Castiel, what exactly did you need my help for?" You finally ask.
"Follow me to the kitchen." He says as he leads the way.
You lift an eyebrow but don't say a word as you take in the old familiar sights of his parents apartment. When you enter the kitchen, you stop dead in your tracks when you see what all is spread out on the floating island. "Uh, Castiel...what are all these groceries for?"
"So," he begins as he runs his fingers through his red fringe. He leans a hand on the counter before continuing, "It's Christmas. My parents flight got delayed. And I forgot to get them a present. So, naturally, like the wonderful son I am, I thought I'd have Christmas dinner ready for when they get here."
The corner of your red painted lips lift. "So, I'm guessing you need me to cook it?"
"Yeah, something like that." He says eying you. You can tell he is preparing his self for your endless teasing.
"Alright." You say cooly as you casually slide off your cardigan and hang it on the barstool. You see an apron hanging in the corner and slide it over your head. You start to tie the string around your waist but feel a hand gently swat your hands away.
"Let me do it." He says as he takes the strings into his hands. He is so close behind you that you can feel his cool breath tickling your neck and your knees quiever ever so slightly. He ties a solid knot that falls at the small of your back. You feel his fingers brush against your neck as he gently tugs your hair from under the apron collar.
You pull yourself together in time to face him, uttering a small "thanks" before you busy yourself with looking over the spread of ingredients. You make a mental checklist of what needs to be made: chicken, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, macaroni and cheese, carrots, green beans, and dinner rolls. Okay. You can finish this in time to make your train.
You set one of the ovens to 350 degrees Fahrenheit before instructing Castiel to peel potatoes. You rinse your hands thoroughly and wash the celery and carrots. You chop them up and set them aside while you prep the chicken in a roasting pan. You add the vegetables and a few peeled potatoes to the pan and sprinkle over a generous helping of herbs and spices. Setting the pan aside while you wait for the oven to finish heating, you start gathering things for the Mac and cheese.
“We could use some music, don’t you think?” He says as he finishes peeling the last potato. You look up to watch him walk over to plug his phone into a speaker.
You break into a smile when you hear Brandon Flowers belt out "Oh Santa." Castiel catches your smile and winks. You did not think he would remember your favorite Christmas song after all these years. And as embarrassing as it is, you can't resist the urge to sing along.
Castiel unsuccessfully bites back a laugh as he listens to you miss all the notes. And you absolutely could care less because you are delivering the lines as fiercely as Beyonce. Cas rejoins you behind the counter, completely enthralled by your impromptu concert. You're wiggling as the song plays out its last cords and drifts into another alternative Christmas jam.
He stares at you. Amusement, horror, and pure mischief stir in his silver eyes as he watches you put the chicken in the oven and set the timer. After a moment, he finally speaks. "I might have to find you a spot in the band with that...wide vocal range."
You laugh. "Yeah, I don't know about that. I might just steal the show."
He smirks as you set water on the stove to boil. "When this starts to boil, add the macaroni to it." You demand as you fill another pot with water to boil the potatoes. You had to admit, getting to boss Castiel around without retaliation is a once in a lifetime opportunity and you intend to take full advantage of it.
"So how did you learn to cook like this?" He asks as he pours the Mac into the boiling water.
"Years of helping my mom, I guess. My mom's a bit of a wiz in the kitchen so she taught me quite a bit."
He grows quiet as he digests the picture of you helping your mom. "Does your mom normally cook the Holiday dinners for you?" You ask, breaking his train of thought.
"Of course. I honestly think my dad and I would burn the building down if my mom let us help."
You smile. "I'll be sure to keep an eye on you then."
A little time slips by without any thought and he finally speaks up again. His voice slightly distant as he speaks. "So... I was a little surprised you were able to come. I was sure you would have other plans."
You laugh, sounding a little bitter at the way he says that. "Yeah, what? You mean other plans like a date."
He looks at you coldly.
"No worries, Cas. I am single as a Pringle. And besides you're one to talk. I'm sure you could have easily called up your fan club and they would have had a 12 course meal on gold plated dishes at your doorstep in an hour." You hiss sounding much more venomous than you mean to. No matter how hard you try, this boy can touch you in a way others can't.
A quiet spell falls over you both as music blares in the background. The potatoes are boiling, the macaroni and cheese is ready to brown in the second oven, and Castiel joins you in clipping the ends off of the green beans.
"I'm sorry...if that came out wrong." He says carefully.
"Me too." You say, allowing the moment to pass.
"How have you been since the infirmary? No catty girls are spreading rumors are they?" His voice is softer as he speaks.
"I've been a lot better, actually. Moving forward, I decided to stop letting so much things pile up on myself. And as for the girls... I think you scared them off for good. I'm sure when we return from winter break, everyone will have completely forgotten about it."
"Good. I don't want to rough up the entire campus if I don't have to."
You smile a little, allowing a comfortable silence to form as you finish up the vegetables. The two of you debate music for a while as you finish making the mashed potatoes and start the stuffing. Castiel shares a couple of wild band stories as you put him in charge over the gravy.
Soon you both find all the food is either cooked or in the oven. And it's time to clean up the dishes. You already set aside most of the dishes to soak. He picks up a few of the stray forks and spoons and brings them to the sink. "You dry, and I'll wash?" You suggest and he takes his spot at the side of the sink.
"I sure hope your parents like everything we made."
"Me too. But if they don't, I'll just tell them I had help from this funny little girl."
You playfully jab him with your elbow. "So, you plan on taking all the credit if it turns out nicely then?"
"Obviously. I did do most of the work after all." He says, side-eying you.
You gasp in mock offense and flick a little water at him. He glares at you and you take a step back. "Oh you're definitely going to pay for that little girl." He says as he scoops you up into his arms and throws you over his shoulder. You laugh and pound his back softly with you fists as your feet kick the air.
"Put me down, Castiel!" You demand through fits of laughter as he walks you toward the living room.
"Oh no, not until you pay, Candy. That was the second shirt of mine that you've ruined." He says dramatically.
He tosses you on the coach and climbs on top of you. His long legs carefully straddle your thighs as he runs his fingers down your sides to tickle you.
You burst into uncontrollable laughter, tears forming in your eyes as you try to fight it. He tickles his fingers over your stomach and arms and doesn't let up until you whine, "Stop, Cas, I swear I'm about to pee myself."
He pins your wrists above your head, a wicked look twinkling in his sexy eyes like that of a cat that wants to play with it's spoils. Your stomach is doing Olympic worthy flips, and you can hear how hard your heart is working to keep you alive. His eyes fall to your lips as he slowly lowers himself over you. You feel his arrogant smiling lips begin to gently brush against yours.
Then the timer goes off, startling you both out of your little bubble. You both stay frozen before you finally whisper, "Uh, the chicken is done." Your face is terribly hot and your head is spinning in a merry-go-round. He slowly lets you free, a quiet unreadable ecpression washing over his face. You get up and go to the kitchen, slidding on oven mitts to pull out the chicken. That is the last of the food to make.
You check the time and panic. "Oh shit! I missed the bus to the train station!"
"Don't worry, I can drop you off." He says as he strolls past the kitchen. "Just let me get changed." He says heading toward his bedroom.
A few minutes later, he emerges, dressed in his usual threads. "Ready?" He asks already heading for the door.
The car ride to the station is short and quiet. The radio plays its usual rounds and you wonder what Castiel thinks whenever he hears Crowstorm play on the radio. But you don't ask since your destination is coming into view.
He comes to a stop in front of the station. You both linger for a second before you grab your stuff. "Thanks for the ride. I guess I'll...see you around?" You say just before you place your hand on the handle.
He grabs your arm and pulls you toward him. His lips zealously crash against yours and you both can't stop the desire to deepen the kiss. A wild fire is breaking thoughout your body and you don't want to put it out. He tastes wonderful and wreckless as he gently tugs on your hair.
But unfortunately all good things must come to an end. You hesitantly pull away from each other, feeling your heart sigh at the departure. "See you around, little girl."
You flash him a smile before skipping out the car to catch your train. It was a strange surprise to your Christmas morning, but you would not have it any other way.
Much later that evening, you get a text from Castiel. "I think you missed your calling."
"What do you mean?"
"I think you'd make a better chef than an art historian." You smile, feeling a wave of relief wash over you.
"So everyone likes the food then?"
"Yes. My mom won't shut up about how I've been holding back on her and that I'll have to do this again next year.
"So...are you free next December 25?"
You cover your giggling so your parents don't hear you in the kitchen. "I don't know... I'll have to check my schedule."
"Merry Christmas, Candy."
"Merry Christmas."

I don't want them to kill him off. I want to have the illusion of him coming strolling into Mill and Aaron being like "Where've you been? Dinner is ready, sit down, eat, then let's fuck." And, yeah, Maxine said it and in my mind it's true, but the show still uses "Sugden" and "Dingle". If Robert were to die, I want to read it on on his tumbstone and for Aaron to make if official. Heck, I want to read it on screen while he's still in the show.
Maxine knows the truth, and if Emmerdale don’t accept it, it’s purely on them. Maxine is the only one I’d trust unconditionally.
*Real talk though, they are loose on surnames, because they rarely use them. Moira and Noah for example are two who MASSIVELY fluctuate depending on which block they’re in and who’s writing out the credits. Also Vic and Priya should be in their maiden names by now, but largely they’re not. Although in spoiler articles, they usually are referred to as Sharma/Sugden.*
If Robert dies, you’ll get far more emotional scenes, because they’ll want to milk it for all it’s worth. But I don’t think they’ll do it, he carried the show in 2017, is wildly popular (or controversial depending on your viewpoint, which you know, sells episodes), and I don’t think Ryan will find massive success elsewhere, so I think they’d like to entice him back in at some point in the future. So even though (to me) it makes the most narrative sense to kill him off, I don’t think they’d do it for the longevity of the show.

The Joy of Cooking Other People’s ‘Secret Family Recipes’
Tumblr media
From Grandmother’s Old Fashioned Boston Brown Bread to Aunt Scrilda’s Toffee Squares, the under-appreciated world of community cookbooks is big on practical recipes and warm hits of nostalgia
This past Christmas, my favorite gift came in the form of a hulking 1976 cookbook that contains all the flavors of my childhood. Titled Pots, Pans, and Pioneers, the book is a staple in many kitchens across Louisiana, containing the recipes for everything from five-cup salad to Depression chocolate pie alongside Creole favorites like crawfish étouffée and chicken and oyster gumbo.
Pots, Pans, and Pioneers is not a particularly well-known cookbook, at least outside of Louisiana: It’s actually a collection of recipes gathered by the Telephone Pioneers of America, Louisiana Chapter No. 24, and it is one of many incredible community cookbooks, painstakingly curated by families, churches, community groups, workplaces, and charities, that have functioned as the backbone of American home cooking for decades. In the era of glossy, chef-driven cookbooks that are arguably more beautiful than they are practical, it’s time for community cookbooks to finally get the recognition that they deserve.
Flipping through one of these cookbooks almost feels sneaky, like you’re peeking into someone’s grandma’s recipe box to find her most treasured culinary secrets. In the 1984 edition of Superlatives!, produced by the Junior League of Oklahoma City, you’ll find the recipe for Hattie’s Never-Fail Southern Fried Chicken. A name like that conveys a sense of place and permanence: Even though you’ve never met Ms. Hattie and don’t know what exactly it is that makes her chicken fail-proof, you can almost visualize an old Southern woman in her kitchen, cooking up a time-tested recipe.
These books are packed, beginning to end, with sacred family recipes. Passed down through the generations, the roots of these dishes often run deep. In Applehood and Mother Pie, a cookbook curated by the Junior League of Rochester, New York, you’ll find Grandmother’s Old Fashioned Boston Brown Bread, which is apparently a “great way to use up sour milk!” In Cooking With Love: Recipes Old and New, assembled by the First United Methodist Church in Prague, Oklahoma, there’s a recipe for Aunt Scrilda’s Toffee Squares that’s clearly been passed down as a family treasure.
Books like these are intensely personal by nature, packed with the recipes that everyday people believe are good enough to share with the world. These recipes aren’t tested by a chef in a professional kitchen over the course of a couple of months; they’re honed over decades of Thanksgiving dinners and Thursday-night suppers with family crowded around the table. A lot of times, somebody’s “secret family recipe” for pumpkin pie is just the recipe off the back of the can of Libby’s pumpkin puree. But that often doesn’t matter, once recipes have been passed down, and when someone forever immortalizes their family’s most beloved recipe in their church’s cookbook, everyone who reads that book is better for it.
Sometimes, the most charming — or utilitarian — aspects of these books aren’t even the recipes. Maybe there are a few poems or funny stories written by the contributors. Often, they include several pages of straightforward cooking advice, clever and common ingredient substitutions, and measurement conversions. For many home cooks, knowing that three apples are roughly equivalent to a pound and that soaking cabbage in cold water will keep it crispy is infinitely more useful than knowing how to make a rose out of an avocado or produce restaurant-quality pasta.
The world of cookbooks is now hyper-specialized. It’s easy to go out and find a book written by your favorite chef, catering to the fad diet that you’re trying out this month, or introducing a cuisine you’d like to explore. But with community cookbooks, nobody’s trying to reinvent the wheel or show off their skills. So much history and authentic personality lies within these pages that the feeling of Grandma’s pride and joy is nearly palpable. It’s almost impossible to not get teary-eyed when you read a note like, “This chocolate cake was my late husband Arnold’s favorite. I hope you love it as much as he did.”
And sure, the way that Americans eat has changed pretty dramatically since these cookbooks were published in 1976 or 1983. Now we’re all trying to cut back on sodium and focus on “clean eating,” but that shouldn’t dissuade anyone from digging back into these old-school tomes. You may bristle at the ubiquity of condensed cream soups and Velveeta in ingredient lists, but there’s nothing stopping you from avoiding the chemical maelstrom and making your own cream of mushroom soup and processed cheese. Just don’t be surprised if it doesn’t quite taste the same.
Maybe times like these, when the world feels like it’s falling apart and there’s no end in sight to a literal pandemic, are when we should be leaning in to the idea of nostalgic comfort foods. We have been lied to about what is and is not healthy, and there’s no hard evidence that putting a can of mushroom soup in your casserole every once in a while is going to result in serious physical harm. Digging back into these old cookbooks is an opportunity to eschew the fatphobic, classist expectations that govern what is “good” and “bad” food and just eat the damn fake cheese.
It’s also not surprising that, during the COVID-19 pandemic, community cookbooks are making a comeback. As Priya Krishna reported for the New York Times in April, these cookbooks have taken on new life in the past few months, with community groups both virtual and in-person coming together to share recipes via shared Google Docs and instructional videos. Not surprisingly, many of these new collections focus on simple, comforting dishes that don’t require pricey cooking equipment or esoteric ingredients to make.
Obviously, given that these are informal cookbooks full of recipes written by amateur chefs, not everything works. But maybe that’s part of the charm, and it’s certainly part of cooking out of even the fanciest chef-written cookbooks. Who among us hasn’t been lied to about how long it will take a pot of onions to caramelize? How many times has a brave home cook followed every single direction in a complicated recipe meticulously, only to pull something completely inedible out of the oven?
Community cookbooks are not particularly difficult to find, especially on auction sites like eBay and the shelves of thrift stores. The best resource, though, may be the back of your mom’s (or grandma’s) kitchen cabinets, where it’s likely you’ll find a book or two that will evoke some nostalgia for the dishes you grew up on. If there were ever a time to recreate the tuna noodle casserole you begged for five nights a week as an elementary schooler, that time is now.

Buying Organic Foods for Weight Loss? Know all about it here!
Medically reviewed by Dr. Shunmukha Priya, Ph.D. in Food Science and Nutrition
Different trends were introduced at different times. For instance, nearly two decades ago, people fancied bottled water. Shortly after this, fast food chains became a hotspot.
Similarly, over the last few years, organic foods have captured the attention of the current generation. Organic stores have cropped up in almost every locality in every city. They are also slightly pricier when compared to regular food products available in the market.

Organic foods for weight loss
Conclusion
Organic foods have also drawn the attention of the weight loss industry – after all, these foods are marketed as one of the healthiest foods. People have flocked these stores to buy organic foods for weight loss. [1]
When it is crucial to get rid of the excess fat, one also has to make sure that they eat wholesome and nutrient-dense foods.
In this article, we bring you why choosing organic foods can be a good thing for weight loss. [2]
What is organic food?
Organic foods are those foods that are produced organically using organic methods and procedures of farming.
These foods are grown without the aid of any fertilisers or pesticides. This farming involves different features which in turn help in promoting the conservation of biodiversity and maintains the ecological balances.
Organic food is grown using natural fertilisers devoid of any chemical, synthetic, antibiotics and hormones; whereas the conventionally grown food has added fertilisers and pesticides.
Tumblr media
The most common organic produces are fruits, vegetables, dairy products, grains and meat. Organic farming also promotes the soil quality, soil fertility and conservation of underground water.[3]
The benefits of organic food
As mentioned earlier, organic foods are chemical-free and being so, has its own merits.
1. They are naturally fresh
Organic foods usually are not laced with preservatives to ‘keep it fresh for a longer period of time’ like regular foods. Organic foods, especially fruits and vegetables, usually come from local farmers.
This means the food involves little to no transportation. To ensure fresh foods, choose native and seasonal products over non-native/non-seasonal products.
2. Organic meat is antibiotic-free
Meats of organically raised livestock are healthier when compared to conventional meat sold in the commercial market. Organic livestock is not given any growth hormones, antibiotics or fed any other animal byproducts.
Increased consumption of organic meats can prevent antibiotic resistance. Likewise, organic livestock is left to roam freely. This enables the breeder to raise them healthily.
3. Certain nutrients are richer in organic food
Studies have revealed that certain nutrients are richer in organic milk (organically raised cow’s milk) and meat than in regular milk and meat. This includes omega-3 fatty acids as well.[4]
Organic foods for weight loss
We have told before and we will tell you again – weight loss happens in the kitchen. The food we eat determines our weight, energy, health and overall wellness. When you eat organic foods for weight loss, your body adapts to the healthy diet and starts healing.
Below we tell you why organic foods are best for weight loss.
1. Less pesticide, more nutrition
Organic foods are dense in nutrition and they have higher nutrient content than regular foods. Organic eggs and pure cow’s milk are a classic example of this.
Tumblr media
It provides maximum nutrition to the body. These foods keep the body energetic and rejuvenated throughout the day. This will keep the body active and an active body will have good metabolism which will boost weight loss.
2. Fibre-rich
Organic foods are richer in fibre than conventional foods. Fibre helps to keep the stomach full for a longer period of time. This prevents unhealthy bingeing. When we stop eating unhealthy foods and implement portion control, the body begins to use the stored fat for energy which propels weight loss.
It is important to note that fibre is also important for a healthy bowel movement. Fibre consumption, as well as regular bowel movements, keep gut healthy. A healthy gut is essential for effective weight loss.[5]
3. Eating healthy carbohydrates
Eating polished rice and refined flour is the main reason behind obesity and other metabolic diseases among the current generation. These types of foods are loaded with simple carbohydrates and offer very little nutrition to the body. Simple carbohydrates digest quickly, make you feel hungry soon and spike the sugar levels.
On the other hand, organically grown grains like wild rice, brown rice, millets etc have complex carbohydrates, fibre and antioxidants. The body processes these grains slowly which bars overeating. Likewise, micronutrients present in these grains also benefit the body.[6]
4. Rich in antioxidants
Organically grown fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants than conventional fruits.
Generally, conventional fruits are laced with pesticides and other chemicals which greatly damages the antioxidant properties. On the other hand, organic fruits and berries offer maximum antioxidants which can effectively fight free radicals in the body.[7]
5. Labels
While buying organic foods for weight loss, it is important to look for the label signifying Organic Food. Jaivik Bharat Logo is the government-approved logo in India.
Organic foods approved by the government will bear this logo and is deemed as authentic. Carrying this logo means the manufacturers have adhered to the National Organic Standards.
Tumblr media
Therefore, ensure that the food you are buying has the Jaivik Bharat Logo instead of buying products that simply claim ‘organic’.[8]
Conclusion
Organic foods are great for weight loss and they have numerous health benefits. However, one should also know if the food is really organic before buying.
While Jaivik Bharat Logo can help you find authentic organic foods among packaged goods, talking to your local vendor about the fruits and vegetables will help you pick the cleaner and healthier ones.
Making informed choices not only will help you lose weight but will also help you maintain it.

Gig Review: Milk & Honey - Wine Cellar/Whammy Bar/Backroom [08/03/2019]
Tumblr media
For International Women’s Day, the lovely Lani Purkis and Teresa Patterson  provided a safe, inclusive, respectful festival and gig environment over 5 locations in 4 cities, all on one big dream of a night. We were lucky enough to attend the Auckland Wine Cellar/Whammy/ Whammy Backroom event while other eager kiwis headed along to Auckland's Powerstation, Wellingtons Club 121 & San Fran, Blue Smoke in Christchurch or maybe they were grooving at Sherwood in Queenstown.
Once the Friday sun set, 12 artists showcased their talent well into the night. The evening was on a tight schedule that allowed us to catch each artist for 15 minutes if we wanted! It was truly a beautiful experience wandering underground between the venues, witnessing strong women vocals and so much love within the crowds.
Tumblr media
The Sami Sisters
First up is The Sami Sisters over in Wine Cellar. The pop trio do a brilliant job easing us into the night, introducing us to a heartfelt song written about losing your ipod and your friends jacket - though Priya remarks after that “when I think about it, it was about way more than just the ipod!” Mandie Hailwood
Tumblr media
Cheshire Grimm
Second act for the night, Cheshire Grimm, had Whammy Bar packed full with eager fans ready for a taste of the bands alt grunge pop sound. Cheshire Grimm has supported some incredible acts, including some bad ass women like Cherie Currie from The Runaways, Ladi6 and Valkyrie so it was so incredible finally hearing their music live for the first time! They played some old and new tunes like their latest track, So Much for the Summer and 2017 track Slave to the Grind which vocalist, Laura, described as a song  “about working too much, it’s a problem we all have”. Helena Barnett
Tumblr media
Dead Little Penny
Wine Cellar fills with the sounds of scraping guitars, as Dead Little Penny start us off by building a hauntingly beautiful musical intro. The whole room is silent as everyone hangs on to the sound of each note. Hayley’s honesty is delicious, remarking that “This song is called Depression because a lot of men have given me that!” before reminding us that it’s International Women's Day, she is an International Woman, and International Women need sips of beer. Mandie Hailwood
Tumblr media
Randa
It was so great to finally catch Randa at Whammy’s Backroom - small but super sweet. The venue became the home for hip hop and a dance party as Randa grooved throughout her set. The insanely good Summer Camp EP & Rangers EP blasted through the speakers as Randa looped and swayed about on the stage. Everyone in the crowd was so polite and had such great energy making the night super wholesome and enjoyable. If you’re into K.Flay or Brooke Candy go check out some of Randas tracks!  Mid-way through, Randa shouted out ‘APRA’, a really important platform that helps music creators get paid and appreciated for the work they do! “Had a really exciting time, so shout out to everyone that was there at Apra and that are here tonight!” They held some incredible seminars earlier in the week regarding songwriting and motivation! (they have some great mental health seminars coming up too!) The support and love from Randa and the crowd was incredible.  Helena Barnett
Tumblr media
Carb On Carb
Carb On Carb are up next, starting off their Wine Cellar set with Phenomenal Ladies. Nicole takes no time at all to thank everyone for coming out, and remarking on how well set out this whole event was - being able to move smoothly between the three venues and catch so much great live music. Mandie Hailwood
Tumblr media
Wax Chattels
Wax Chattels take to the Whammy Bar stage. Wax Chattels are fantastic, and we already know that - but boy their aesthetic is one of my favourites of the night - lit only by one solo white light on the floor - and clad almost entirely in black, they almost blend in with the walls behind them. The room fills with heavy bass lines and tasty synth work, all held together with some immaculate drumming. Mandie Hailwood
Tumblr media
LEXXA
Described as “Cherubs” by Randa; LEXXA are just that as they put on such an energetic, sugary sweet set. It was a super special night for sisters, Julia & Maude, as they were premiering their new music video for their latest track, Slow Fade Out.  I have been lucky enough to see LEXXA before but their energy on stage and connection with each other is always so special to see. We were treated to a jam packed set with I Got Better Friends Now, Get Out and a re-worked version of Back Of My Mind before the moment everyone was waiting for, Slow Fade Out. The music video reflected the bands style with a montage of dancing and goofing around. Their set closed with a banging track - Shania Twains world wide classic, Man! I Feel Like A Woman! which made the crowd giggle and groove for the last few minutes of their set. A very fitting song for International Womens Day! Helena Barnett

October
Prolific amounts of strong synths, distorted guitar and new tracks astounded listeners during October’s set. We were sent to a hazy dream state with Lead Singer, Emma’s sultry and strong voice. If you’re into Beach House, The Donnas or The Runaways you will definitely enjoy getting lost in Octobers melodies. A few tracks from her latest 2018 album, Ultra Red, were played including a crowd favourites, 1000 Eyes & Pure. October was a great fit for Milk & Honey, she is unapologetically herself and has some bad ass tunes, the perfect way to end the night. Valkyrie
Last on my list is Valkyrie, a trio hailing from South Auckland that caught my attention a few months back - and I've been dying to catch live since. It’s easy to tell just how much they love being on stage, as Omer commands the room in Whammy Bar. Each song introduction is met with a cheer from the crowd, and everyone is quick to groove along with anything the band have to give them. Mandie Hailwood

The Joy of Cooking Other People’s ‘Secret Family Recipes’ added to Google Docs
The Joy of Cooking Other People’s ‘Secret Family Recipes’
