Sandor didn't see you at first. He heard you two aisles over. He was at a 24/7 supermarket. He usually goes at night because of his face. He didn't like the stares and the people pointing. His height doesn't help as well, so he tended to do stuff at night.

He heard you yelling and at first he wasn't going to help because it ain’t his business, especially since he didn't understand what you were saying. He thinks it’s Spanish because his coworker Bronn, who was learning the language to impress his neighbor, Margaery had been yelling the word, coño for everything. He heard you yelling the word again.

He was going to walk away until you started to scream. “Don’t you fucking touch me.” Sandor was quick to push his cart towards your voice. He wasn't going to leave now since he heard that.

“The fuck you doing?” Sandor yelled when he saw a man towering over you, practically pushing you against the shelves. The man didn't even say a word, one look at Sandor he quickly scurry off like a rat.

“Que cabrón.” You mumbled under your breath as you watched the man run off. You looked to your right to see your savior but he was already turning away to leave.

You quickly caught up to him and thanked him for intervening. His first thought of you was you were beautiful, very beautiful and you were nice. He was surprised that you offered to cook for him when you noticed the ungodly amount of frozen tv dinner in his cart.

The way to a man's heart is through his stomach is the saying Sandor heard and didn't believe until he ate your cooking. He knocked on your door and his nostrils were filled with the smell of spices. His stomach rumbled and he was salivating. He never had a home cook meal before. You welcomed him inside and he was shocked at the amount of food at the table. Steak, rice, beans, salad, and all sorts of side dishes. Sandor learned what plátanos were and he fell in love with them. Maduros with cheese and tostones had become his favorite food.

After a year dating him, you had mentioned to him about your family. He was a little bit weary since he knows you have a very large family. He has heard your family calling you on the phone while cooking or cleaning. Sometimes he would wave when your family video calls you on WhatsApp. Poor Sandor isn't used to it.

He told you about his family. His sister died young and his older brother is in jail. Parents were gone the moment Sandor became 16 and he hasn't heard of them since then. You wanted to cry when he told you about his childhood and how he got burned.

You bribed Sandor to come with you to your nephew's birthday. You told him this would be the best way to meet the family. You would be cooking maduros with cheese for the next two weeks.

Sandor didn't want to go to the party empty handed even though you already bought a gift. He didn't want to be rude but he thought you were joking when you told him he can bring a pack of Corona to the party. “But it’s a kid's birthday.” He told you while you were doing your hair in the bathroom.

“Babe, we are Hispanic. We have beer for every celebration.” Sandor bought 2 packs of 24. He wanted to get on your dad’s good side. He wasn't feeling nervous until he parked in front of your childhood home and saw the balloons tied on the railing of the stairs.

“Relax, mi amor. You look good.” You gave him a quick kiss on the lips. He wore dark blue jeans with a button down shirt. He had even trimmed his beard and combed his hair. He was still nervous that your family wouldn't approve of him or would make fun of his looks. You watched as Sandor got out of the car and carried the beer with ease.

His stomach was flipping when the front door opened and a small older lady came out wearing an apron. “Mija!” Sandor knew it was your mother. You had shown him many pictures of your family. Your mother gave you a big hug and a kiss on your cheek.

“Mamá, este es Sandor, mi novio.” Sandor had placed the cases of beer on the ground and was going to shake your mom’s hand when she walked towards him and gave him a hug. You grinned at the sight of your mom next to Sandor. The top of her head reached below his chest.

You couldn’t help but grin when Sandor started to blush by your mother’s hug. “Ven. Ven.” Sandor and you made your way to the backyard. Sandor can hear the music playing in the background, children laughing, and people dancing and talking. He kept looking at the flashy and colorful decorations. It was something he wasn’t used to hearing and seeing but he liked it. Everyone looked so happy.

Beforehand you had told Sandor that he had to introduce himself and greet every single family member. Sandor was feeling a bit overwhelmed, he hasn’t received so many hugs and kisses on the cheeks in his life. No one seems to mind his features. He got nervous when your little cousins, nieces and nephews came towards him. Children were always scared of him. They all looked at him with wide eyes.

The kids weren't shocked by his face at all. They were just simply amazed by how tall he was. Your mother had to come and tell the kids to run along when they started to form a line so they could be carried on Sandor’s shoulders. They yelled how they could see mountains and the oceans while they sat on his shoulders. They compared their small hands with his very large hands. You had to calm your tias down because they kept telling you how tall and built he was.

Your father opened a beer for Sandor and sat next to him while your mom fussed over Sandor, making sure he had enough on his plate. Sandor had to unbuckle his belt after the fourth plate of food. You tried to tell your mom that Sandor was stuffed but she wouldn’t have it.

“Pero hija es tan flaco y alto que significa que necesita comer más.” You shook your head at your mother. “Calentaré unas tortillas para Sandy.” She said, watching Sandor scarf down another plate of food happily.

Some of your family members started calling Sandor, Sandy because they couldn’t pronounce his name due to their accent. Especially the little kids but Sandor didn't mind it though, he found it kind of funny. Since the nicknames he usually is given are mean ones.

Sandor smiled when it was time to cut the cake and saw your little nephew sitting behind a big cake. You were standing next to Sandor as everyone sang Happy Birthday. You looked at Sandor and saw him clapping his hands instead of singing, since everyone was singing in Spanish.

It was official, Sandor a.k.a. Sandy was your nephew’s best friend. Your nephew was in tears because the pole that was supposed to be holding the piñata broke. Sandor rose up from his seat and held the paper machete rainbow colored donkey above the kids head. Afterward, your nephew was sitting on your lap as he was showing Sandor his little bag of candy along with small toys he had gotten from the piñata. You were in shocked that your nephew gave Sandor a manicho, a chocolate bar with peanuts for him to try. These little kids never share their piñata candy.

“Tiene ojos tristes, mija.” Your mother told you as she sat on the chair next to you. Both of you were looking out to the backyard to see your cousins talking with Sandor as they stood by the grill. You agreed with your mother. “He doesn't have a good family, mami.”

“Ahora tiene una nueva familia.” Your mother had told you before leaving. You knew she was right as you watched the little kids hugging Sandor’s legs while he shook your cousin’s hands.

“This is for you, mijo.” Sandor was about to refuse but saw you shaking your head as your mother started to tie the plastic bags filled with Tupperware of foods from the party. Both of you stood by the door saying your goodbye to your parents when Sandor felt your mother tugged on his shirt making him lean down so she can kiss his burned cheek.

The ride home was quiet, you kept stealing glances over at Sandor. He had a faint smile on his face as he drove to his apartment. Getting inside and walking to the kitchen with the leftovers that your mother packed, you were storing them in the fridge when you heard Sandor come into the kitchen.

He said your name softly and you looked over at him. “What does mijo mean? Your mother called me that before we left.” You shut the door of the fridge and walked over towards him. “It means son.” Sandor looks away from you for a moment and you hug him. He wraps his arms around your shoulders pulling you closer to him.

Much More Than Just A Princess (Empires SMP)

Katherine was fine, really!

This wasn’t her first ball, far from it: she was used to the long, endless, hours that the balls her parents held in Glimmergrove seemed to extend to. Still, it’s been awhile since she was actually invited to one.

Since the fall and the… rumors about her curse, Katherine hasn’t been invited to any of the Glimmergrove festivities. Her parents kept saying it was for the best, just leave it to them and they would handle everything! So she was kept away from the public eye, hidden as if a curse could just be looked over, swept under a rug and never addressed. The people were happy and the kingdom still was as festive as ever, she just wasn’t part of it anymore.

It was to great surprise when a small child with wings in its shoes knocked on her tailor shop and just handed her a sealed letter with the biggest grin in their face, leaving as soon as they arrived with a messenger bag over their shoulders. The letter, it turned out, was from Lord Protector Sausage, inventing the rulers to the first ball from the newly reestablished Sanctuary.

The thrill and joy of being invited to such an occasion clouded all her worries. She recalled the grand ballroom of her parents' palace, the blinding lights and the orchestra music that flew through the place, coming as far as to reach her room. And so, she agreed without a second thought.

And, well, she doesn’t regret it, really!

But now, the anxiety is consuming her.

Sanctuary is different from Glimmergrove. So very different. For starters, there was no castle or ballroom. The ball was being held in the kingdom square, hanging lanterns for atmosphere lighting and small market stalls for food and drinks.

“It’s good for the local economy! I especially recommend you try plátano maduro frito or arroz con leche!” Sausage said while greeting her, and she had to concede that it was a great idea to do so.

The music was live and played by a small group in the bandstand, instead of the orchestra she was expecting. It was fun and the music was captivating, but she just couldn't shake the feeling of the unfamiliarity of it all.

And that she was going to, somehow, mess it all up.

Katherine tried to not think too much about the curse, because, really, there was no way to prove it was even real. But in the back of her mind, after years of being accused and told that she was the cause of the fall and the bringer of monsters, she can’t help but believe it. Talking about it is easy, it warns people that something may be off without having to explain over and over again.

‘I'm possibly cursed’ she would say, nothing more. And people would believe her, taking her words at face value. The other rulers knew, for the most part. And they were still around. But Katherine is cursed, probably since birth. And good things don’t last long with curses around.

The ball is wonderful and everyone is happy to enjoy the good music and food offered by Sausage. The view is incredible and laughter rings in the air. Joey keeps trying to whisk her for a dance, promising that there will be no one better to dance with, which Katherine keeps refusing. Joey is sweet, but he knows nothing of her, and, despites Katherine’s best efforts, insists that they belong together.

It’s in one of such tries that Katherine finds herself again.

“My beautiful pirate princess!” Joey declares once again, bowing and holding a small blackthorn in his hand. Katherine can’t even imagine where he found it “Fate has brought us together once again! Say yes and allow me to dance with the rarest jewel in all the seven seas!”

“Joey, this is all very nice and all. But, I don’t really want to dance tonight.”

“Is it the lack of treasure that makes you decline?” Joey tries, straightening up

“Not really, n-”

“I swear that I’ll bring you the grandest coffer the world could ever see! Even better than all that gold I found last time.”

“Gold?” Asks Joel, the conversation catching his attention “Why, if the princess won’t take it, I would gladly have the treasure you brought.”

“Only Katherine is deserving of that pillage!” Joey laughed, ready to boast about the treasure he had found “Even the most oblivious landlubber could see how great the sphere of gold- and my proposal- was!”

Katherine wouldn’t say great, the proposal coming more as unneeded than anything. But that made Joel pause, his eyes glinting with something unknown.

“... A gold sphere, you say?” His voice was serious, unlike anything Katherine heard from the god.

“Indeed!” Joey continued “Found it in the sky, clearly not being looked after. The scallywag that first had it surely was a naive one to leave it unattended.”

Oh.

Oh no, no.

Joey was reckless, sure, but to that extent?

“I’m, uh.” Katherine started, walking away from the other two as quickly as possible “I’m gonna go find Sausage!”

She bolted to one of the stands, asking about the Sanctuary Protector. She needed to find him before a full fight escalated. Luckly, they pointed her to a building nearby and she was quick to head in that direction.

She entered in a hurry, relieved to be away from the commotion but still on edge. The building was, evidently, Sausage’s house, the man in question tending to a woman that was sitting on a divan. Her movements were quite sluggish and unrefined, and Katherine thought she might be drunk at first glance.

“You were great, Gem!” Sausage praised “You actually stayed so much longer than we anticipated!”

“Don’t patronize me, Sausage..” The woman -Gem, it was how Sausage called her- retorted.

“I’m not! I swear y-”

“Hey…Sausage?” Katherine interrupted.

“Katherine! Hi!” Sausage beamed “Enjoying the ball, so far?”

“Yes, yes. But, uh…”

“Is something the matter?” He asked, suddenly worried.

“Kind of?” She tried “Joey admitted to stealing Joel’s gold sphere”

“The Stratosphere?!” Sausage exclaimed, distressed. And then started mumbling “¿Se volvió loco? ¡Roba lo más importante de Stratos!” He pauses, taking a deep breath “I’ll deal with that, sure.”

Sausage got up, then glanced at Gem. He hummed and looked back at Katherine.

“Katherine, can you stay with Gem for a minute? Just until one of her aristocrats comes for her.”

She nods “Sure, I can do that!”

Sausage smiles and takes his leave.

And Katherine is suddenly uncomfortable. She can recall seeing Gem before, when most of the rulers went to investigate the End, but they never actually talked. She doubts the other even knows her name.

She rocks back and forth on her feet for a while, ignoring how she’s not acting very princess-like at the moment. Then Gem gently pats the space next to her in the divan.

“Come sit down.” She smiles “Sorry for not being very proper right now.”

“Oh, it’s alright!” Katherine sits quickly “I don’t think, we met before?”

Gem hums “Yeah, not really. You were on the trip to the End, right? I’m Princess Gem, from Dawn.” She extends her hand.

“Yes, I was!” She takes the offer “I’m Princess Katherine, from Glimmergrove”

“The cursed lands?” Gem inquires, in the middle of a yawn.

Katherine freezes at that. She knew, of course, that rumors would spread around about the curse. Yet, she never heard it directed at Glimmergrove.

“Oh.” She says after a while.

“Was that insensitive?” Gem’s eyes widened, as if just realizing what she said “I’m so sorry! I’m not used to staying up past the sunset, I’m probably not filtering anything right now.”

“It’s fine, really” Katherine insists “Just wasn’t expecting it, that’s all!”

Gem gives a relieved sigh “Oh, thank goodness!”

Katherine nods, unsure of what to say next. She looks down at her hands, wishing to be wielding her battle axe at the moment. She was used to its weight on her hands during most nights, and it brought her comfort to hold it knowing she was actively able to help her people.

But her hand was still holding Gem’s own, none of the two had realized that. Katherine dislocated her hand carefully, too embarrassed to bring it up.

“Not used to staying up past the sunset?” She brings it up.

Gem nods, her eyes closing for a second too long.

“At Dawn, we wake up with the bees and fall asleep before the moon rises.” She explains “We try to make the most of the hours under the sun.”

“Oh!” Not drunk then, just sleepy “That explains it.”

Gem hummed back, but Katherine supplied no explanation.

“Was that why Sausage was here?” Katherine continued.

“Yes. He was trying to make sure I wouldn’t fall asleep.” Gem explained “I insisted I was fine and that he should just stay at the ball, but he persisted.”

“Yeah, sounds like Sausage.”

The two laughed a bit, only to Gem to yawn again. Katherine hummed, an idea sparkling up on her.

“I can help you if you wanna stay awake a little longer!”

“You can?” Gem asked, doubt in her voice.

“Yes!” She got up, extending her hand to Gem “You just have to keep it a secret.”

Gem raised an eyebrow at that, but took Katherine’s hand anyway.

“Alright sure.”

Katherine grinned and pulled Gem up. She put her finger in front of her mouth, motioning to make sure she would stay silently. The two of them quietly made their way out of the house, the sound of the ball behind them. Katherine glanced back quickly, seeing that Sausage was still trying to prevent Joey and Joel from escalating their argument, the rest of the rulers a mix of egging them on and expectating the whole ordeal.

The two princesses made their way to a small clearing on the outskirts of Sanctuary, far enough to not be seen but close enough that the music could still be faintly heard.

“Uh, Katherine?” Gem started “It’s way too dark for us to be out here.”

“That is exactly why we are here!”

Gem blinked at her “I’m not following this logic. Won’t monsters come after us here?”

Katherine simply smiled, letting go of Gem’s hand.

The transformation started just like it always did: her outfit fluttered around her, the fabric stiff and so familiar after many nights like this. The dress she wore to the ball was great, her own design and as graceful as a princess gown wear could be, but it was no battle attire. Her monster hunter attire made her feel much more at ease, as if she could do anything as soon as the armor and mask appeared. Her hands hold onto her battle axe, sharp and bigger than her, but comfortable and familiar as soon as its weight settles.

Gem gapes at her.

“I-...you..-What?!”

“Yeah, I know, right?” Katherine swung the axe over her shoulder “I’m a monster slayer. Kind of”

“What do you mean kind of?”

“It’s a secret thing. My parents would kill me if they knew.”

Gem just blinks up at that, clearly ready to ask more questions. But she suddenly gasps in fear, pointing behind Katherine.

“Creeper!”

“Oh, be ready, Gem! It’s starting!” Katherine smiles.

“Ready? I’m not fighting!”

“Didn’t you want to stay awake?” she asks, swinging the axe over to another mob nearby “What better way than thorough adrenaline?”

Gem stared at her, disbelief clear in her eyes, but she jumped into action when a zombie neared her.

The two princesses kept fighting for a while, laughter bubbling out of them every now and again. Gem tripped over her skirt, and Katherine deemed the hunting done, placing a torch on the ground. She sat down besides Gem, chest heaving but still giddy.

“That was-” Gem started, pausing to breathe “So! Crazy!”

“Did it help?”

“Help?” Gem’s eyes widened “I feel like I could spend a week without sleeping!”

They both laughed. They stayed like that for a moment more, enjoying the faint music of the ball.

"That's good.” Katherine continued “Told you adrenaline would do the trick!”

“Oh, shush!” Gem gently slapped her shoulder “You could at least have told me we were fighting mobs!”

“And ruin the surprise?”

Gem laughed, getting up again and offering her hand to Katherine. She accepted, and once she was stable on the ground again, she destransformed. Gem smiled at her, and then bowed slightly.

“Princess Katherine from Glimmergrove.” she looked up, a cheeky smile on her face “I can still hear the music from here. Would you give me the honor of a dance?”

Katherine laughed, the formal tone so distinct from the careless way the two of them were just a few minutes ago.

“Why, Princess Gem from Dawn” the other giggled “I thought you would never ask.”

Gem puts her other hand to Katherine’s waist, pulling her closer. Katherine puts her hand to Katherines’s shoulder. She follows the other lead as she spins her around the clearing. She steps on Gem’s dress a few times, not used to dancing after all this time, and lets out a few quiet apologies, Gem reassuring that it’s okay.

And they both laugh when Gem dips her, wings fluttering on Gem’s back, even if it’s a little awkward when she stumbles backwards. Yet, she trusts Gem not to drop her to the ground.

She knows that they will need to come back to Sanctuary soon, both to the ball and for the Dawn's aristocrats that will be looking for Gem.

But for now she is happy to spin aimlessly in the clearing, thinking she could get used to this.
