"MY WAY: The Life and Legacy of Pat Patterson"
He was a semi-openly gay man within professional wrestling. Publicly, he was secretive about his sexuality. He had a poor, sad, lonely upbringing until he was more successful his father accepted him more. But he didn't have much support from his family when he came out to them as a teenager in the late 50s. Had to leave home at 16.
He's been the subject of rumors and erroneous stories because of homophobia in wrestling and in society.
He was a talent and a genius for wrestling and helped so many wrestlers over 45-50 years throughout the 80s, 90s, 2000s, and 2010s all the way until his death in 2020. He was like 'required reading' for anyone dreaming to wrestle, he put on shows and matches that today are still unbelievable.
I think he's a good man. He's a hero.

Loyal brothers
The Capetian kings found their brothers no more difficult than their sons. The exceptions were the brothers of Henri I, Robert and Eudes, but thereafter the younger Capetians developed a tradition of loyalty to their elders. Robert of Dreux, the brother of Louis VII, who was the focus of a feudal revolt in 1149, was only a partial exception, for at that date the king was still in the East, and the real object of the hostility was the regent Suger. By contrast, Hugh of Vermandois was described by contemporaries as the coadjutor of his brother, Philip I. St Louis's brothers, Robert of Artois, Alphonse of Poitiers, and Charles of Anjou, never caused him any difficulties, and the same can be said of Peter of Alençon and Robert of Clermont in the reign of their brother Philip III. Even the disturbing Charles of Valois, with his designs on the crowns of Aragon and Constantinople, was always a faithful servant to his brother Philip the Fair, and to the latter's sons. The declaration which he made when on the point of invading Italy in the service of the Pope is revealing:
"As we propose to go to the aid of the Church of Rome and of our dear lord, the mighty prince Charles, by the grace of God King of Sicily, be it known to all men that, as soon as the necessities of the same Church and King shall be, with God's help, in such state that we may with safety leave them, we shall then return to our most dear lord and brother Philip, by the grace of God King of France, should he have need of us. And we promise loyally and in all good faith that we shall not undertake any expedition to Constantinople, unless it be at the desire and with the advice of our dear lord and brother. And should it happen that our dear lord and brother should go to war, or that he should have need of us for the service of his kingdom, we promise that we shall came to him, at his command, as speedily as may be possible, and in all fitting state, to do his will. In witness of which we have given these letters under our seal. Written at Saint-Ouen lĂšs Saint-Denis, in the year of Grace one thousand and three hundred, on the Wednesday after Candlemas."
This absence of such sombre family tragedies as Shakespeare immortalised had a real importance. In a society always prone to anarchy the monarchy stood for a principle of order, even whilst its material and moral resources were still only slowly developing. Respectability and order in the royal family were prerequisites, if the dynasty was to establish itself securely.

THIS DAY IN GAY HISTORY
based on: The White Crane Institute's 'Gay Wisdom', Gay Birthdays, Gay For Today, Famous GLBT, glbt-Gay Encylopedia, Today in Gay History, Wikipedia, and more
 January 19
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1863 – Ogden Codman, Jr. was an American architect and interior decorator in the Beaux-Arts styles, and co-author with Edith Wharton of The Decoration of Houses (1897).
Codman spent his youth from 1875 to 1884 at Dinard, an American resort colony in France, and on returning to America in 1884, studied at the MIT. Wharton became one of his first Newport clients for her home there, Land's End. Subsequently she introduced Codman to Cornelius Vanderbilt II, who hired him to design the second and third floor rooms of his Newport summer home, The Breakers.
In 1907, Codman built the Codman-Davis House in Washington, D.C. for his cousin Martha Codman, one of the few intact homes that he designed. This included a carriage house, now the Apex Night Club, ironically a gay club.
Although a noted homosexual, on 8 October, 1904, Codman married one of his commissioners, Leila Griswold Webb, widow of railroad magnate H. Walter Webb, who died unexpectedly in 1910.
In 1920, Codman left New York to return to France, where he spent the rest of his life at the Chùteau de Grégy, wintering at Villa Leopolda in Villefranche-sur-Mer: it is his masterpiece, the fullest surviving expression of his esthetic.

1897 – The Missouri Supreme Court upholds a conviction for assault to commit sodomy of a St. Louis police officer who attempted sodomy with another male after threatening to arrest him unless he accompanied him to a lumber yard, where the attempt was made.
Tumblr media
1900 – An Ohio newspaper reports that a man was arrested for sex with his 13-year-old male companion. Both claim that the younger partner's mother "gave" him to the other.

Ray Stevens & Pat Paterson (R)
1941 – Born: Pierre Clermont, better known by his ring name Pat Patterson, was a Canadian former professional wrestler (d.2020). Pat was 17 when he started wrestling. He soon became one of the biggest names in the sixties and seventies. He worked for WWE as a creative consultant. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 1996.
Outside of the wrestling ring, Pat was really timid and shy. He was soft-spoken, with a cute French accent. Surprisingly, Pat was a former altar boy and candidate for the priesthood. He was a deeply religious man.
Pat Patterson debuted in Montreal, Quebec in 1958 as "Pretty Boy" Pat Patterson, an effeminate wrestler who wore red lipstick and pink trunks and was accompanied by his pet Poodle.

A Young Pat Patterson
Patterson wrestled frequently for affiliates of the National Wrestling Alliance throughout the 1960s, and was a ten time tag team champion in San Francisco with a variety of partners. His most famous pairing was with Ray Stevens, the two of them forming the heel tag team, the Blond Bombers.
Patterson was openly gay, although he had never stated so. It is rumored that Pat and Gerald Brisco, another of his wrestling partners, were lovers. In 1992, Patterson was accused of sexual harassment by former ring announcer Murray Hodgson and released from the company until the charges were dropped, when he was promptly rehired. After dropping the charges, Hodgson's attorney referred to Hodgson as "a lifelong con man."
In August 2006, Patterson underwent emergency heart surgery. In October, Patterson recovered from his operation and was released from the hospital.
On June 12, 2014, Patterson officially "came out" on TV. The video link is below:
youtube
Although Patterson was openly gay, having come out in the 1970s, his sexual orientation was never directly acknowledged on television until 2014 when he spoke about it on a WWE-produced reality TV show.
Louie Dondero, Patterson's longtime partner of 40 years, died of a heart attack in 1998. Patterson himself died in December 2020.

1950 – Randy Price is a television newscaster with WCVB-TV in Boston, Massachusetts, after being the lead anchor at WHDH-TV from 1998 to 2009. He is considered the U.S.'s first openly gay newscaster.
Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Price attended Louisiana State University, where he began his broadcasting career in college radio, which continued with a stint in the U.S. Air Force, with Price working for the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service.
He worked in television in Bakersfield, California (KERO-TV) and Toledo, Ohio (WTVG), before moving to Boston's WBZ-TV in 1983 where he anchored for 12 years. He left WBZ in 1995 due to alcohol problems which included a drunk driving conviction.
Price joined WHDH-TV in 1996 as a freelance reporter, and in 1997 was made a full-time anchor. He moved into the morning anchor chair and then was promoted to anchor the 5, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts. On February 6, 2009, Price was let go from WHDH-TV. His last newscast was on Wednesday, February 4, 2009. On February 7, 2009 The Boston Globe quoted Price that station owner, Edmund Ansin, had told him "we need to move in different directions."
On June 2, 2009, Price was named morning anchor at WCVB-TV, Channel 5 in Boston.
Price is openly gay and on January 3, 2007 he married longtime partner Mark Steffen in a ceremony on the steps of the Massachusetts State House in Boston, Massachusetts. They live in Kittery, Maine.

The Johns Committee in session
1959 – On this date investigators summoned the University of Florida Geography professor Sigmund Diettrich to the Manor Motel in Gainesville, Florida for "interviewing". Soon after, he was fired from his job and lost the life he loved as a beloved teacher and dean. He attempted suicide the same day he was let go from U.F. Hundreds of other professors and students across the state were also terminated or expelled because of their sexuality. Many people are familiar with the McCarthy hearings but do not realize that Florida had its own committee designed to weed out communism and homosexual activity. State Senator Charley Johns started the investigations to "protect Florida's children."
The Johns Committee pursued people in academic institutions, courthouse bathrooms and bus stations. The committee's investigators went so far as tapping phones in motels, interrogating children as young as 10, and breaking up a teenage girl's slumber party looking for evidence of moral misconduct. In 1993 more than 30,000 pages of secret documents became public, including a University of Florida administrator's statement that there was no way to prevent Gay men from lingering in university bathrooms "unless you pour sulfuric acid on the floor to make people go fast."

1982 – Pete Buttigieg is an American politician and candidate for the Democratic nomination in the 2020 United States presidential election. He is the first openly gay person to seek the Democratic nomination, and has built his campaign around the idea of generational change. He launched his campaign on April 14, 2019, after forming an exploratory committee in January. Initially considered a long shot, he gained significant momentum in mid-2019 when he participated in several town halls, forums, and debates. As of December 2019, several media outlets consider him one of four "top-tier candidates".
Buttigieg served as the 32nd mayor of South Bend, Indiana from January 2012 to January 2020. Before running for office, he worked on the political campaigns of Democrats Jill Long Thompson, Joe Donnelly, and John Kerry. He was defeated in the 2010 election for Indiana State Treasurer before being elected mayor of South Bend, Indiana the following year, becoming the youngest mayor of a city with a population of over 100,000. In 2015, Buttigieg publicly came out as gay. Later that year, he was reelected with over 80% of the vote. In 2017, he ran for chair of the Democratic National Committee.
From 2009 to 2017, he served as a naval intelligence officer in the United States Navy Reserve, attaining the rank of lieutenant. In 2014, he was deployed to Afghanistan for seven months and was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award. From 2007 to 2010, he worked as a consultant at management consulting firm McKinsey & Company. Buttigieg is a graduate of Harvard College and Oxford University. He attended the latter on a Rhodes Scholarship.
In a June 2015 piece in the South Bend Tribune, Buttigieg came out as gay. By coming out, Buttigieg became Indiana's first openly gay elected executive. He was the first elected official in Indiana to come out while in office, and the highest elected official in Indiana to come out. Buttigieg is also the first openly gay Democratic presidential candidate, and the second overall, after Republican Fred Karger, who ran in 2012.
In December 2017, Buttigieg announced his engagement to Chasten Glezman, a junior high school teacher. They had been dating since August 2015 after meeting on the dating app Hinge. They were married on June 16, 2018, in a private ceremony at the Episcopalian Cathedral of St. James. As of April 2019 Chasten uses his husband's surname, Buttigieg.
Buttigieg announced that he and his husband had become parents on August 17, 2021. Buttigieg announced that they had adopted two newborn fraternal twins on September 4, 2021.
In June 2019, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, a watershed moment in the LGBTQ rights movement, Queerty named him one of its "Pride50" people identified as "trailblazing individuals who actively ensure society remains moving towards equality, acceptance and dignity for all queer people."
President-elect Biden named Buttigieg as his nominee for Secretary of Transportation in December 2020. His nomination was confirmed on February 2, 2021, by a vote of 86–13, making him the first openly gay Cabinet secretary in U.S. history. Nominated at age 38, he is also the youngest Cabinet member in the Biden administration and the youngest person ever to serve as Secretary of Transportation.

2004 – Ian Iqbal Rashid releases his movie Touch of Pink. Multi-talented Rashid is a poet, screenwriter and filmmaker known in particular for his volumes of poetry, for the BBC TV series This Life and the feature films Touch of Pink and How She Move.
Of Indian ancestry and Ismaili Muslim religion, Rashid's family lived in colonial East Africa for generations. Ian was born in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Different years of birth are given for Rashid in different sources, but academic work gives the year as 1968. In 1970, his family was forced to leave Tanzania. After failing to secure asylum in the UK and US, they settled in Toronto.
Rashid began his career as an arts journalist and critic and events programmer, particularly focussed on South Asian diasporic, Muslim and LGBTQ cultural work.
In the early 1990s, Rashid returned to London, Britain, where he lives today with his partner, the writer, curator, and academic Peter Ride.
In the late 1980s, Rashid was a regular contributor to the Canadian LGBT magazine Rites. Rashid published his first poetry collection, Black Markets, White Boyfriends and Other Acts of Elision, in 1991. Two more followed: the chapbook Song of Sabu in 1993 and The Heat Yesterday in 1995.
His poems "Another Country", "Could Have Danced All Night", "Hot Property" and "Early Dinner, Weekend Away" appear in John Barton and Billeh Nickerson's 2007 anthology Seminal: The Anthology of Canada's Gay Male Poets, and others were included in the 2009 anthology Forbidden Sex, Forbidden Texts: New India's Gay Poets.
Self-taught as a film-maker, in 1991, Rashid made the short film Bolo Bolo! with Kaspar Saxena. The film, part of an HIV/AIDS cable access series called Toronto Living With AIDS, resulted in the series being pulled from Rogers Television after complaints about sexually suggestive content, though it had a long and healthy life at film festivals.
Rashid went on to write two award-winning short films, Surviving Sabu (1999), and Stag (2001).
Tumblr media
Touch of Pink, Rashid's first feature film, spent 12 years in development. In 2003, he finally had the chance to direct the project as a Canada-UK co-production. It premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival to great acclaim, a bidding war, and eventually, a sale to Sony Picture Classics. The film has attracted extensive scholarly commentary.
How She Move received a similar reception at Sundance Film Festival. Directed by Rashid in 2007, the film is set in the world of step dancing. It was nominated for a Sundance World Cinema Grand Jury Prize and purchased by Paramount Vantage. The film opened to positive reviews and strong box office.
Rashid began working as a writer in UK television in the late 1990s. His credits include the soap London Bridge (Carlton Television for ITV) and the cult hit BBC2 series This Life, for which he received the Writer's Guild of England award.

All you have to do is go fast enough and long enough.
- James Garner, Grand Prix (1966)
The cult classic Grand Prix (1966) was an ambitious journey into the soul of elite motor racing, Grand Prix even on today’s viewing manages to find the heartbeat of Formula 1 deep within the majesty of roaring machinery.
Several top drivers are in competition for the 1966 Formula 1 title. Among them is American Pete Aron (James Garner) of the BRM team (and formerly with Ferrari), who is fast but prone to mistakes. At the Monaco race, Aron's refusal to give way causes a serious collision with his teammate Englishman Scott Stoddard (Brian Bedford). Stoddard, who races in the shadow of his deceased brother, is injured and misses several races, His headstrong wife Pat (Jessica Walter) is fed-up with loving a man living on the edge and leaves him while he is still in hospital. Meanwhile, Aron is fired from the BRM team for reckless driving.
Tumblr media
The Ferrari team are BRM's closest challengers. Veteran driver and two-time champion Frenchman Jean-Pierre Sarti (Yves Montand) is still the fastest man on most days, but he is starting to lose his motivation. Sarti is stuck in a loveless, distant marriage with businesswoman Monique (Genvieve Page), and starts a relationship with American journalist Louise (Eva Marie Saint). Sarti's team mate is young Italian Nino Barlini (Antonio Sabato), who lives the fast life on and off the track.
Aron hooks up with Pat, is hired by the fledgling Yamura team financed by tycoon Izo Yamura (Toshiro Mifune), and finally finds his winning form. Stoddard returns to racing despite the pain of his injuries, and more determined than ever, goes on a winning streak. With Sarti and Barlini also picking up victories, all four men enter the final race of the season in the hunt for the coveted championship with plenty to lose on the line.
Director John Frankenheimer creates a three hour masterpiece celebrating both the men and the machines involved in the international pinnacle of motor racing. Large segments of Grand Prix consist of action from races at the legendary Monaco street circuit, the dangerously fast and incredibly scenic Spa in Belgium, Zandvoort in Holland, Clermont Ferrand in France, Silverstone in England and the final showdown at the imposing Monza in Italy, with its intimidating steeply banked corners.
Tumblr media
Other than playing with split-screen imagery, Frankenheimer uses no tricks, and just mounts his cameras at every possible angle on the cars, capturing the pure raw speed, incredible danger, and classic beauty of racing in the mid 1960s. This was the era of rudimentary safety protocols, with drivers facing the risk of serious crashes, injury and death at every corner. The visuals are stunning, with the cars blasting at top speed past unprotected poles, trees, spectators, and structures.
Whenever the cars are running, Grand Prix is one of the best studio efforts of the '60s. The film only stalls when it's off the track, which is where more than half of this three-hour epic takes place. Grand Prix is an exhilarating celebration of men addicted to the thrill of racing with an unknown destiny, speeding into magnificent madness.

Happy birthday PATRICK DEPAILLER!!!!! (09/08/1944 - ∞) ⚡💙
Patrick André EugÚne Joseph Depailler was born in Clermont-Ferrand and was the son of an architect. His passion for motorsport started at an early age: his idol was the french racing driver Jean Behra, who raced mainly in the 50s. He obtained a degree and qualified as a dental technician, meeting his father's expectations, although Patrick already developed a great passion for motorbikes and racing, and intended to pursue that career. His father of course didn't approve, but later he'll recognise his son's talent and give him financial support.
In 1962 his passion for motocycling lead him to start racing: from the first races it was already clear that Patrick was extremely talented, and for sure didn't go unnoticed, infact the young french man caught the attention of, future Formula 1 driver, Jean-Pierre Beltoise; but unfortunately his racing career had to be put on hold, because for 18 months, he had to complete his military service. Once he got back, Jean-Pierre encouraged Patrick to switch from motorcycles to cars, and in 1964 got him a drive in the 'Coupe des Provinces' (a french motoracing competition intended only for young people) respresenting his region: the Auvergne.
Despite gaining a lot of success, he lacked the budget to continue racing, so he was forced to return to motorcycles, but in 1966 Patrick registered for the Volant Shell scholarship competition, where the prize for the top finisher was an Alpine Formula 3 car; unfortunately he would get beaten by the charming François Cevert. Jean-Pierre helped young Patrick once more by convincing Alpine to sign the young driver and managed to get him a contract. In his time with Alpine Patrick drove in Formula 3 and in sports cars competitions: the french driver shone and demonstrated his excellent driving skills that earned him the prestigious win at Monaco and the '71 Formula 3 title. Subsequently he moved to race in England, and after a few races he sparked the interest of the March team that offered him a seat for his season in Formula 2; but soon Patrick would find himself racing in the top category of motorsport.
Thanks to ELF's support, Patrick made his debut at the '72 French GP driving for the Tyrrell Racing team as a third driver, and later drove at Watkins Glen too. In late 1973, Patrick was chosen to become a full time Tyrrell driver, alongside with Jody Schekter. Despite some accidents, unreliable cars (and experimental ones like the six-wheeled Tyrrell) it was at the wheel of a Tyrrell, in 1978, that Patrick scored his first victory, and it was at the most prestigious track: Monaco. He stayed with the British team until 1979, when Patrick decided to join the french team Ligier, teaming up with fellow French driver, Jacques Laffite. The '79 season was off a good start: he dominated the first part of the season, and gained the secind victory of his career at the Spanish GP, but shortly before his home race, he had a hang-gliding accident, where he broke his legs and kept him away from motor racing until the end of the year. Because of this accident, he was fired from the team, apparently 'he shouldn't have taken part in any risky sport' because it violated the terms of the contract. Left without a seat, he joined the new Alfa Romeo team, despite still recovering from his accident; in addition, the car was extremely unrelieable. This would be his last team he would move to, he would later lose his life during a test session at Hockenheim.
Patrick is one of those cases where data and statistics should be totally ignored: often the machinery let him down, or simply didn't live up to his raw talent, quick and temerarious driving style.
The iconic six-wheeled Tyrrell was highly disliked by Jody Scheckter, but Patrick was very enthusiastic about it, so much that it influenced Ken Tyrrell to race the iconic car.
The French man looked for that special thrill outside the race track by engaging in all sorts of 'extreme' sports. One that he particularly loved was scuba diving.
Symbol of the 70s, one of the last to represent the pure spirit of a real racing driver. He was the anthitesis of the modern pilot: he smoked too much, he loved to take risks, he loved red wine and spoke his mind. He was a likeble character that would grow on you, "L'enfant", as he was nicknamed, was "The grown up reckless boy you couldn't get mad at" as Ken Tyrrell recalls. He loved living his life to the fullest, always with a mischievous smile and a cigarette between his lips. 🚬

Happy Birthday Ysabeau
Summary: Diana gives Ysabeau a present she’ll never forget
Tumblr media
“Marthe, when’s gamma’s birthday?” Philip asked, looking at the older woman.
The twins were currently sat in the kitchen, while she was cooking, drawing for the rest of their family.
Becca looked up from the drawing she was making for her uncle Baldwin to also look at Marthe.
“Oh, it’s been a while since we’ve celebrated. And no one really kept track back then”, the woman said, checking her phone, “it should be
next week.”
At that the twins both grabbed new, clean sheets of paper and started drawing, Marthe just smiling knowingly as she turned back to cooking.
~~~
An hour later Diana showed up, kissing the backs of her kids’ heads, “what are you two up to then?” She asked, a soft smile on her lips.
“Making birthday cards for gammy”, Becca stated as Philip flicked his wrists and the cards were cut beautifully into shape.
It was still so strange seeing the four year old use magic but Diana simply smiled and kissed his cheek.
“Wait
Ysabeau’s birthday is coming up? Why is this the first I’m hearing of it?” Diana asked, turning her head to Marthe.
The older woman just chuckles softly, “she does not like celebrating it. But I wasn’t going to keep it from the kids.”
Diana nodded her head at that. She was already working on something for Ysabeau in her mind.
~~~
The following week Diana had it all planned, down to the last detail. She had the twins make a card she could use. And then she started writing down the present she would give her mother-in-law.
Dear Ysabeau,
Happy birthday! I’ve been thinking about this for a while, what to give to your birthday. And then it hit me.
The perfect present for you is love. All you need to do is pick a time and a place, and we’ll go there. I’ll take you to see Philippe.
Don’t worry about Matthew, I’ll deal with him. I just want you to have one final goodbye with your husband.
all the love,
Diana x
She smiled to herself and sealed the card with the wax and seal Pierre had given her for her birthday last year.
~~~
Marthe had been all to eager planning the party for her oldest friend. But keeping it a secret seemed harder than ever. Especially with the twins telling their grandmother everything, not to mention the matriarch of the de Clermont family heard everything.
«Baldwin I need you to help get Ysabeau out of the Chateau for a few hours», Diana asked.
«Why does it have to be me?!» He asked with a groan, «Why can’t it be Matthew, she likes him more.»
That may be true, but Diana needed to talk to her husband about her plan for Ysabeau’s present, and she couldn’t risk Baldwin or Ysabeau hearing it because a) it would spoil the surprise for one and make the other want the same present later.
«Please. I need Matthew’s help with something, so I need you to take her. Go hunting or something», she suggested, looking at Baldwin with pleading eyes.
«Fine. But you owe me, big time.» At that she nodded, mentally groaning. Now there was a HUGE chance he would ask for the same thing his mom was getting. But that was something to think about for another day.
Diana thanked him and he left to get Ysabeau. Only a few more hours and it’ll all be perfect.
~~~
It was a fight getting Matthew to agree with her present for his mother. But he finally agreed. On one condition, that she made sure it wasn’t when there was a chance his parents had one of their fights. That could end bloody. Well, he had two conditions, she had to also make sure no one else in the family was there, least of all his sisters, or Louis, or him.
With the conditions agreed to, she kissed him softly and turned to go help the others with the planning.
«I’m sure, mon coeur, they won’t miss you too much if you stay here for a bit longer», he suggested, pulling her back to his chest.
«Matthew», she groaned, a sigh leaving her lips when he kissed her neck.
«Come to bed with me.» His insistence almost lulled her to comply, but she stood strong, and shook her head.
«I have to go. Later.» She successfully turned in his grasp and leaned up to kiss him again, «I promise.»
A groan left Matthew’s lips as he reluctantly let her go. «You better keep that promise, I was planning on spending my time with you.» Although that sounded wonderful, and she wanted nothing more she left her husband and went back to the others.

To say Ysabeau was surprised with her party, was an understatement. Although it had seemed almost impossible to keep it from her, they had managed it. The twins smiled wide up at their grandmother as they both gave her their cards. She thanked them, scooping them gracefully up into her arms so she could hug them.
Lastly was Diana’s card, and she nervously handed it to her mother-in-law.
She studied the vampire’s face as the card was silently read. Then noticed a single tear falling as she hugged the card to her chest.
«Are you alright Granny?» Gallowglass asked, worried that something was wrong.
«All is well, Sorley», she said, getting up and hugging Diana closely, whispering a barely audible, «Thank you.»
No one asked Ysabeau more questions after that, although Baldwin eyed her and Diana suspiciously.
~~~
Weeks later Ysabeau had decided where and when she wanted to go. Diana agreed and they said their goodbyes and see you laters to their family before going.
~~~
It was easier for Diana doing the time walking now. She’d done it a few times since her first time going to the past, although it had been her and Matthew going away for a weekend.
She had never taken anyone else but him, but she knew she was ready.
«Hold on to my hand, don’t let go, and set your foot down when I say so», she told her mother-in-law.
And within a short moment, they were both gone.
~~~
«Diana? I though you and Matthew just—» Philippe said, looking at Diana with a surprised look before he noticed Ysabeau, holding Diana’s hand. «Oh, hello my love», he murmured and engulfed his wife in a bear like hug.
«How I’ve missed you dearest», she murmured, hugging her husband just as tightly.
Pierre II de Beaujeu (1438-1503) was Duke of Bourbon and Auvergne from 1488 until his death. Initially Sire de Beaujeu, he received part of the Armagnac property from the king in 1472 (county of La Marche, viscounty of Carlat and Murat) and then became, due to the death of his two elder brothers, the head of the House of Bourbon and as such Duke of Bourbon and Auvergne, Count of Clermont, Forez and Gien and Sovereign Prince of the principality of Dombes. He was also Grand Chamberlain of France, Governor of Languedoc and one of the main advisors to the Kings of France.
Grande commande photographique - BNF - BibliothĂšque nationale de France/ MinistĂšre de la Culture.
Lundi 30 mai.
Saint-GenĂšs la Tourette, Odile Gilbert, la Maire dĂ©jĂ  rencontrĂ©e plusieurs fois. Interview pour le bulletin municipal, accompagnĂ© de Colette. Nous passions les vacances chez ses grands-parents. Elle parle d’eux. J’avais revu Colette Ă  Clermont en mars ou avril pour la premiĂšre fois en X annĂ©es (longtemps longtemps !).
Fenaisons avec l’ancien maire Pierre Luc Fraisse.  J’apprends des mots comme andainer (regrouper l’herbe sĂ©chĂ©e), passer la pirouette (Ă©taler l’herbe fauchĂ©e pour qu’elle sĂšche) et sans doute d’autres que j’ai dĂ©jĂ  oubliĂ©.
BNF / Au final il y aura un rendu de dix photographies. Beaucoup de photos, que j’appellerais « intermĂ©diaires », non choisies mais importantes dans le cadre de mon histoire paraitront dans ce journal. Elles seront le ciment de ce projet personnel qui dĂ©passera la commande.
Les modestes textes de mon journal de bord essayeront de raconter le déroulé et les raisons de ce travail. Ils sont écrits à partir de notes glanées pendant la journée et de souvenirs de route.
Marie de Cotteblanche
Marie de Cotteblanche (ca.1520- ca.1580) Translator and linguist
Tumblr media
Born into a family of parlementaires (members of Paris's Parlement), Marie de Cotteblanche was the daughter of Guy de Cotteblanche, a lawyer at the Paris Parlement, and Catherine Hesselin, whom he married in 1517. Her older brother Elie accumulated many honors, becoming a gentleman of the Chambre du Roi in 1571 and knight of the Order of Saint Michel in 1578. Marie had a sister Marguerite, as we learn from the cosmographer François de Belleforest's dedication to them of his pastoral poem, Chasse d'Amour (Love's Hunt, 1560). The bibliographer La Croix du Maine notes that she was a "Damoiselle Parisienne, trÚs docte en Philosophie et Mathématiques" (Damoiselle Parisienne, very learned in philosophy and mathematics).
Marie de Cotteblanche was also adept at languages. Her only extant work, Trois dialogues de M. Pierre Messie, touchant la nature du Soleil, de la Terre, et de toutes les choses qui se font et apparoissent en l'air (Three Dialogues by M. Pierre Messie, concerning the nature of the sun, the earth, and all things that happen and appear in the air), a French translation of three Spanish dialogues by the cosmographer Pedro Mexia (or Mejia, Pierre Messie in French, 1497-1551), was published in 1566 and reissued some twenty-nine times between 1566 and 1643, either independently, in Claude Grujet's translation of Messie's Diverses Leçons, or in an anonymous translation of the complete dialogues of Pierre Messie.
Cotteblanche bases her translation on both the original Spanish version (either the 1547 or 1548 editions) and an Italian rendition by Alfonso d'Ulloa published in Venice in 1557. In her numerous marginal annotations, Cotteblanche compares the Spanish and Italian versions, opting sometimes for the one or the other or sometimes coming up with her own formulations. In her dedicatory letter to her friend and patron, Marguerite de Saluces, maréchale de Termes, she thanks the latter for having taught her Italian. She states her knowledge of only Italian, a privileged language at court and among a select group of translators who were state secretaries, writers, and lawyers. Marie de Cotteblanche combines her knowledge of languages with her interest in the sciences. Of the six dialogues by Messie, she retains only the three that concern geophysical and cosmological topics (the sun, the earth, and the meteors). Her choice of a scientific subject matter was not an unusual one for a woman of the elite class. Many learned women of the nobility and upper gentry were well read in the sciences. Catherine de Médicis, for instance, was interested in astronomy and the natural sciences, Marguerite de Valois and Diane de Poitiers in medical treatises, and Catherine de Clermont, maréchale de Retz, in philosophy and mathematics.
Cotteblanche's choice of the dialogue form, a favorite humanist genre, appealed to a wide readership eager to expand its learning. In her preface, she states her great love for books ("seuls m'ont faict fidĂšle compaignie" [they alone have been my faithful companions]), study and learning. She was also commited to writing. She viewed her translation as a stylistic exercise, a first attempt to produce a work that would eventually lead to another publication reflecting her own creativity. No other work by her has been published.
