it is wrong to expect a reward for your struggles. the reward is the act of struggle itself, not what you win. even though you can’t expect to defeat the absurdity of the word, you must take that attempt. that’s morality, that’s religion. that’s art. that’s life.

Happy birthday PATRICK DEPAILLER!!!!! (09/08/1944 - ∞) ⚡💙
Patrick André Eugène Joseph Depailler was born in Clermont-Ferrand and was the son of an architect. His passion for motorsport started at an early age: his idol was the french racing driver Jean Behra, who raced mainly in the 50s. He obtained a degree and qualified as a dental technician, meeting his father’s expectations, although Patrick already developed a great passion for motorbikes and racing, and intended to pursue that career. His father of course didn’t approve, but later he’ll recognise his son’s talent and give him financial support.
In 1962 his passion for motocycling lead him to start racing: from the first races it was already clear that Patrick was extremely talented, and for sure didn’t go unnoticed, infact the young french man caught the attention of, future Formula 1 driver, Jean-Pierre Beltoise; but unfortunately his racing career had to be put on hold, because for 18 months, he had to complete his military service. Once he got back, Jean-Pierre encouraged Patrick to switch from motorcycles to cars, and in 1964 got him a drive in the ‘Coupe des Provinces’ (a french motoracing competition intended only for young people) respresenting his region: the Auvergne.
Despite gaining a lot of success, he lacked the budget to continue racing, so he was forced to return to motorcycles, but in 1966 Patrick registered for the Volant Shell scholarship competition, where the prize for the top finisher was an Alpine Formula 3 car; unfortunately he would get beaten by the charming François Cevert. Jean-Pierre helped young Patrick once more by convincing Alpine to sign the young driver and managed to get him a contract. In his time with Alpine Patrick drove in Formula 3 and in sports cars competitions: the french driver shone and demonstrated his excellent driving skills that earned him the prestigious win at Monaco and the '71 Formula 3 title. Subsequently he moved to race in England, and after a few races he sparked the interest of the March team that offered him a seat for his season in Formula 2; but soon Patrick would find himself racing in the top category of motorsport.
Thanks to ELF’s support, Patrick made his debut at the '72 French GP driving for the Tyrrell Racing team as a third driver, and later drove at Watkins Glen too. In late 1973, Patrick was chosen to become a full time Tyrrell driver, alongside with Jody Schekter. Despite some accidents, unreliable cars (and experimental ones like the six-wheeled Tyrrell) it was at the wheel of a Tyrrell, in 1978, that Patrick scored his first victory, and it was at the most prestigious track: Monaco. He stayed with the British team until 1979, when Patrick decided to join the french team Ligier, teaming up with fellow French driver, Jacques Laffite. The '79 season was off a good start: he dominated the first part of the season, and gained the secind victory of his career at the Spanish GP, but shortly before his home race, he had a hang-gliding accident, where he broke his legs and kept him away from motor racing until the end of the year. Because of this accident, he was fired from the team, apparently 'he shouldn’t have taken part in any risky sport’ because it violated the terms of the contract. Left without a seat, he joined the new Alfa Romeo team, despite still recovering from his accident; in addition, the car was extremely unrelieable. This would be his last team he would move to, he would later lose his life during a test session at Hockenheim.
Patrick is one of those cases where data and statistics should be totally ignored: often the machinery let him down, or simply didn’t live up to his raw talent, quick and temerarious driving style.
The iconic six-wheeled Tyrrell was highly disliked by Jody Scheckter, but Patrick was very enthusiastic about it, so much that it influenced Ken Tyrrell to race the iconic car.
The French man looked for that special thrill outside the race track by engaging in all sorts of 'extreme’ sports. One that he particularly loved was scuba diving.
Symbol of the 70s, one of the last to represent the pure spirit of a real racing driver. He was the anthitesis of the modern pilot: he smoked too much, he loved to take risks, he loved red wine and spoke his mind. He was a likeble character that would grow on you, “L'enfant”, as he was nicknamed, was “The grown up reckless boy you couldn’t get mad at” as Ken Tyrrell recalls. He loved living his life to the fullest, always with a mischievous smile and a cigarette between his lips. 🚬
