"How can I give this pain to someone else? Someone who's already suffered? And I know she would not want that. At all. That is not why my daughter came into this world for the time that she did."

Beautiful, although exploitative. It's a very graphic portrait of suffering and grief, with a wonderful photography and the acting is just amazing.
However, watching almost two hours of a woman being denied her grief, manipulated by her mother, being almost raped and being actually abused physically and emotionally by her cheating husband who ends up leaving her is just too much. It follows the "Oscar baiting" line, which too much suffering and too little plot or even humanity.
Vanessa Kirby is always a delight to watch, which makes it all be worth it. The heart was surely for her. She's wonderful.
Observation: this movie would be better if it was British. Just saying.

I had heard good things about this and I did admire the performances, notably Ellen Burstyn I have to say, and the brutal, remarkable opening birth scene led me to expect something naturalistic and visceral. That it then wobbled about rather, being a tale of marital breakdown, a court room drama, it threw in pointless affairs and half answered questions about alcohol abuse. It ultimately seemed muddled and at times melodramatic and so under-served the miraculous and raw central performance by Vanessa Kirby. Still good, impressive, mature, but just not quite the thing it might have been.

'Benny Safdie has gambled on himself at a crucial moment in his career, but his performance in Oppenheimer has proven that it may well pay off. As one half of the filmmaking duo The Safdie Brothers, alongside his sibling Josh, Benny Safdie has enjoyed a meteoric rise in recent years with the massive success of the pair’s recent directorial projects. 2017’s Good Time and 2019’s Uncut Gems, two gritty, nerve-rattling crime dramas helmed by major actors, have seen the Safdie brothers go from well-reviewed indie darlings to household names. However, while audiences anticipate the duo’s next film, Benny Safdie seems to have set his sights elsewhere.
While the Safdie brothers materialized to mainstream audiences as a consolidated duo, the two haven’t always been a unit. The first several director credits to Josh Safdie’s name are not shared with his brother. While the two have co-directed on key works in their filmographies, it is by no means the status quo. Benny Safdie even has an upcoming TV series on which he is credited as co-creator and co-star with The Rehearsal’s Nathan Fielder. In such a context, Benny’s career turn is less surprising; however, only with Oppenheimer’s recent release has the pivot presented itself as an equally viable alternative to filmmaking.
Oppenheimer Continues Benny Safdie's Pivot To Acting Instead Of Directing
While Josh and Benny Safdie’s directing career has seen them become prominent filmmaking names, Benny has been demonstrating an increased commitment to acting in recent years. This career pivot hasn’t manifested spontaneously; Benny' acting career even predates his filmmaking one, with his first IMDB credit being the titular role of Alberto in Josh Safdie’s solo-directed short film, Alberto Lives in a Bathroom. However, since 2020, Benny has been focusing more and more on acting in projects from major studios and voices.
Benny Safdie’s appearances in Pieces of a Woman, Stars at Noon, Licorice Pizza, Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret. and, most recently, Oppenheimer have quickly built up his reputation as a reliable character actor. Unfortunately, this commitment has come at the expense of his directing work. Benny has already confirmed that he will not be directing the upcoming Adam Sandler project which has been touted as an Uncut Gems follow-up (via GQ). While the film will still be produced under the Safdie brothers’ label, Elara Pictures, Josh Safdie will be the film’s sole director.
Benny Safdie's Oppenheimer Performance Is Another Sign He's A Great Actor
Benny Safdie’s pivot to acting just as his filmmaking career is beginning to take off is a risky move. Having proved himself an exceptional directing talent, Benny’s choice not to capitalize on Uncut Gems’ momentum could be a significant blow to his progression as a director. However, Safdie’s performance in Oppenheimer is a good sign that the gamble will pay off. While the actor has been steadily appearing in works by prominent filmmakers, the blockbuster Oppenheimer, wherein Safdie plays the role of the nuclear scientist and father of the H-bomb, Edward Teller, is his biggest project yet.
Critics have commended Safdie for making a memorable impression in Oppenheimer, a film packed with big-name actors far more experienced than himself (via LA Times). Benny Safdie plays the part with an off-putting gravity and eccentricity that, apparently, took months to hone. Safdie told Vulture that his work on the role included yelling before every take to break up his vocal cords, letting his eyebrows go un-plucked for months and sending Nolan voice notes in character as Teller. If Safdie can continue to turn out such dedicated performances in future roles, he may well establish himself as not just great filmmaker, but a great actor as well.'
