The Many Illustrators of A Tale of Two Cities 1: Hablot Knight Browne (a.k.a. Phiz)
...& a century-and-a-half-long game of telephone...
Tumblr media
For the first post in a series on the book's illustrators, how could we start with any but the very first one?
"Although a number of critics have pilloried Hablot Knight Browne ('Phiz') for his supposed ineptitude in the program of illustration for A Tale of Two Cities, the fact that he so astutely realized and graphically elaborated so many significant elements of Dickens's letterpress is evidence that his pictorial series reflects an extremely careful reading of the printed text...The visual accompaniment [that these illustrations provided to the novel's monthly installments] was not mere ornamentation, but an aide-mémoire intended to facilitate the monthly reader's keeping track of a discontinuous narrative over a period of seven months."
from "Charles Dickens's "A Tale of Two Cities" (1859) Illustrated: A Critical Reassessment of Hablot Knight Browne's Accompanying Plates" by Philip V. Allingham from the 2003 volume of the journal Dickens Studies Annual.

Frontispiece Cover to the Monthly Installments Vignette
For some perspective on the significance of this first set of illustrations - published initially within monthly installments of the novel in 1859 (the text of which was collected from the original weekly installments published in All the Year Round, also in 1859) - that single quote comes from an entire article on these illustrations that is itself 49 pages long.
Tumblr media
The Mail
As such, suffice it to say that this particular post will not be a thorough examination of the history, context, and impact of these illustrations (though, for those interested, be sure to click on any links you see throughout this post for all sorts of further reading!).
Tumblr media
The Shoemaker
Instead, it will simply be a place to observe and appreciate these illustrations for what they are, in their "original" glory.
Tumblr media
The Likeness
...I mean, just look at these things! (I'm of course gonna break formality after this one because it's my favorite😌)
Tumblr media
Congratulations
In terms of the odyssey of finding the proper edition of these to post, "original" is the operative word.
Tumblr media
The Stoppage at the Fountain
These are the oldest (except for some or possibly all of McLenan's...more on that many months from now though) and certainly the most iconic of the illustrations of this novel and thus have also had the most mileage, having been passed from edition to edition to edition countless times over the last 164 years.
Tumblr media
Mr. Stryver at Tellson's Bank
That means - as the gif at the top of this post demonstrates - that these illustrations have slowly been "translated" over time into dozens of distinct images - in ways as innocuous as a change in a shadow and as striking as a change in a character's facial expression.
Tumblr media
The Spy's Funeral
These translations have happened in all sorts of ways over the development of printing technology - blemishes, xeroxing errors, low-quality or blurry scans, too much ink being used in printing, image compression, sometimes even actual tracing of the original illustrations! - and as interesting as they can be on their own, for someone determined to find the most accurate representation of Phiz's phenomenal work, they can be...phrustrating.
Tumblr media
The Wine-shop
In fact, as a sidebar, the illustrations that I used for the Best Character Showdown bracket turned out to themselves be traces and not originals! I am Ashamed and disheartened! You could even say that I am yet another...
Tumblr media
The Accomplices
accomplice in the mistranslation of Phiz's work!
Tumblr media
The Sea Rises
Rest assured, though - although they are not from the monthly installments themselves (which as far as my research has gone do not seem to be anywhere on the Internet), these particular scans are sourced directly from an online scan at the Open Library project (contained within the Internet Archive) of the first edition of A Tale of Two Cities, itself also published in 1859.
Tumblr media
Before the Prison Tribunal
I do wish that they hadn't been cropped the way that they have and that they were available in a (much) higher resolution, but as of now, they're the best representation of Phiz's original work that we netizens have!
Tumblr media
The Knock at the Door
A Tale of Two Cities was the final novel that Phiz illustrated for Dickens - and marked the complicated ending to a twenty-three-year (yes) professional partnership between the author and illustrator - but his work here will mark a beautiful beginning to the long archiving project we will experience together here on this blog.
Tumblr media
The Double Recognition
Throughout the work of this project, there will be quite a variety of sources being used - from direct scans by me to the two-tone abstractions of PDFs clearly not created for the purpose of storing image information - depending on the needs and availability of each edition.
Tumblr media
After the Sentence
All of it goes to show the importance of accuracy and attention to detail in archiving art, which is itself an art form to be appreciated.
Tumblr media
Hope you've enjoyed!
& the standard endnote for all posts in this series:
This post is intended to act as the start of a forum on the given illustrator, so if anyone has anything to add - requests to see certain drawings in higher definition (since Tumblr compresses images), corrections to factual errors, sources for better-quality versions of the illustrations, further reading, fun facts, any questions, or just general commentary - simply do so on this post, be it in a comment/tags or the replies!💫

Marbled Monday
It's a mishandled Marbled Monday with this copy of The O'Donoghue: A Tale of Ireland Fifty Years Ago by Irish novelist and raconteur Charles Lever, Esq (1806-1872). The book was published in 1845 in Dublin by William Curry, Jun. and Company with illustrations by H.K. Browne (Hablot Knight Browne, 1815-1882), an English artist and illustrator also known by his pen name, Phiz. The first illustration in particular caught my eye—it's a guy (and his gun) being thrown out a window with the caption "The Reckoning." And what a reckoning, indeed!
The marbling is a pattern called Spanish Wave that also features brightly colored veining in red, yellow, and a darker blue. I called it a "mishandled Marbled Monday" because of the abrasions to the front and back covers of the book and the library accoutrement attached to the front inside covers. Certainly not how we would treat a book in our collection these days, though this one was recently transferred to our collection from the library's general stacks.
The bookplate that doesn't have a library pocket glued over it is that of the Earl of Mexborough, though which one we aren't sure. It is likely that it was owned by John Charles George Savile, 4th Earl of Mexborough, as he was alive from 1810-1899 and this book was published in 1845. The bookplate features the arms of the Savile family, with three owls on a diagonal stripe, a lion on either side in chains, and an owl atop a knight's helmet at the top. It includes the family motto: "Be fast."

The 550-year rise and fall of Croydon's annual Walnut Fair
Thousand of stalls, thousands of visitors: people travelled from London, Surrey and far and wide for Croydon’s annual Walnut Fair SUNDAY SUPPLEMENT: The account of life in Croydon written by the son of Charles Dickens’ illustrator offers fascinating details into a long-forgotten annual festival on the ‘Fair Field’, as DAVID MORGAN explains “Try your hand at the Lucky Bag!” “Walk up! More Coffee
As I promised I went to four different coffee shops this past week in my effort for a simple morning ritual. This week I spent about the same amount of money but, there was some sticker shock to be had. The four shops are within my transit to work from BART, so how did Philz, Illy Cafe, Bluestone, and Blue Bottle were on my list this week.
Tumblr media
My journey began at Philz, a renowned coffee shop with two locations on Market Street. Opting for the one near the Ferry Building,I realize Philz is known for its pour-over coffee process, which takes a little longer an actual 60 seconds longer than the machine grind, pump and drip. Each Philz Coffee is featured by a bright yellow, stainless steal, light beachwood and a chalkboard accent to lend a sense of the original authenticity from its "humble" beginnings.
I was promptly informed that my mocha would not have any whipped
Tumblr media
cream on it and while my disappointment wouldn't cause too much distress I was bemused would my world actually crumble at the loss of whipped cream. It was a Monday, so anything is possible. My drink was announced and I picked it up from a nameless barista and while I am sure an employee of Philz I was not sure the barista wasn’t following me around from store to store as nothing distinguished them from the customers except by location.
Tumblr media
Blue Bottle, a long-standing favorite, holds my number three spot on my coffee needs. I adore their Nola iced coffee, even on a chilly day, and on any day one can find clean lines in their locations.
Tumblr media
The simple design of a blue bottle on a white background is prevalent quiet richness. The Nola iced coffee has natural sweetness and soft leather undertones that I appreciate as the atmosphere allowing me to slow down and enjoy the moment amidst the shop authenticity.
Tumblr media
The next day, I made my way to Bluestone Coffee near the Palace Hotel on Market Street, I expected efficiency and a focus on coffee. What might come as a surprise and maybe my own hubris is that as I write this I just discovered that Bluestone is Australian Coffeehouse and its reputation is prestigious. However, I encountered a kiosk setup with two hardworking individuals. It became apparent that there was a labor shortage, and the barista stationed behind the coffee maker repeatedly directed customers to use the kiosk, despite their inclination to approach the open counter.
Tumblr media
The small nook along Market Street on cold and windy morning where Karl the Fog lingered in Union Square. Bluestone turned out to be the most expensive coffee shop on my journey, and unfortunately, the experience fell short of my expectations.
I collected my coffee, the second employee was meticulously preparing
Tumblr media
an avocado and egg toast with microgreens so delicately placed that it seemed the greens were still growing. I had to inconvenience the employee to retrieve a French pastry from the display case. There was no inclination or offer to heat up the pastry just annoyance and that is expensive for one to appreciate the hard work of such an esteemed reputation.
Finally, Illy Cafe where the display of Italian and European pastries was
Tumblr media
so enticing that I could practically feel the calories adding up as I glanced at them. I indulged in a mocha accompanied by a warmed chocolate croissant, resulting in an expensive
Tumblr media
combination of coffee and pastry
Illy Cafe's bright pops of red, elegant decor, and comfortable seating created a sense of normalcy in paying a premium to enjoy a cup of chocolate-infused espresso and steamed milk.  Illy Cafe gives the quiet rich feel of where business deals are made and life long friends enjoy sitting down and connecting. It may inch up in my go to spot.
Tumblr media
The mochas and the Nola were all good coffee and where the Australian, Italian, American versions of espresso drinks are contrived to fit in our waiting palms it begs the question of Coffee being a commodity that is fueling an actual economy.
My last look will be the breakdown from the seed to the porcelain cup because right now, today, May 26, 2023 at $180.85 for Coffee futures.

But I held my tongue until we had regained the flat in the cautious manner of our exit, and even there until Raffles rallied me with a hand on either shoulder and an old smile upon his face. “You rabbit!” said he. “Why couldn’t you wait till we got home?” “Why couldn’t you tell me what you were going to do?” I retorted as of yore. “Because your dear old phiz is still worth its weight in innocence, and because you never could act for nuts! -No Sinecure

Please help! My 19th-century man went on his Grand Tour and has returned with an entirely unhealthy and excessive obsession with the classical world. He peppers Greek into his everyday conversation, has taken to calling his very good friend Antinous (Is this an eccentiricity or an affect? The poor man's name is Arthur!) and I fear he will be crushed under the weight of all the marble relics he brought home with him. What can be done?
To begin: congratulations on your enthusiastic antiquarian! Too many 19th century men go on a grand tour, and the most beloved souvenir they want to display is some kind of ridiculous knick-knack.
Tumblr media
Young Mr. Lacquer, "whose continental gatherings were confined to an enormous pipe, and some foreign jewellery, was himself always talking of them."
Studying a language is a wonderful enrichment for anyone, not just a 19th century man, and it sounds like he enjoys connecting the ancient and modern worlds with his classical allusions. Balance, however, is key, and if he's reluctant to engage in other activities you might try asking him what lifestyle habits his favourite authors of antiquity recommend.
I also understand that there is a limit to how many marble relics can fit into the average home, but your 19th century man may have a very different sense of what makes "too much" stuff in a room. Chances are he wants curios and collectables on every surface, pictures covering the walls, and has a very busy, crowded sense of interior design compared to a 21st century person.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A cool batchelor pad and a cozy domestic scene (you know there is chintz in there).
You can help him arrange his collection for display—and you might need some additional shelving installed, let's be honest. But it's a small price to pay for a 19th century man to have so much happiness and comfort, wouldn't you agree?
