For everyone who believes they’re “too old” to succeed.
From Forbes:
By Karen L. Pepkin and Wendell C. Taylor, Next Avenue Contributors.
Tumblr media
The media abounds with negative views about the impact of aging on physical, cognitive, and financial well-being. In fact, there are entire industries that have emerged to counteract the effects of aging — nutritional supplements, hormone treatments, surgical improvements, lotions, potions, and the like. They all seem to underscore Bette Davis’ famous quote, “Old age is no place for sissies.”
What if there were another point of view? What if aging brought about, not decline but our greatest accomplishments? What if we looked at aging as Dr. Christiane Northrup does? She tells us that “getting older is inevitable, but aging isn’t.”
Our book, Senior Wonders: People Who Achieved Their Dreams After Age 60 profiles 23 individuals and two groups who not only survived into old age, but achieved their greatest successes. As we wrote our book, we looked for emerging themes. Were there any commonalities among these people? Although their accomplishments were in a variety of fields (arts, sciences, social causes, entertainment, etc.), several themes became apparent. We think of them as the 3 P’s: Passion, Perspective on Life, and Persistence.
Passion, by definition, is any compelling emotion or feeling. These individuals either had a strong belief in what they were doing, or in the case of those with an artistic bent, they couldn’t help creating, whether it was writing, painting, or acting.
Perspective on life emerged as a theme when we noticed that several of our seniors commented that they couldn’t have achieved their success at an earlier age.  Having lived a long life enabled them to learn from failures and successes, establish a clear focus, and develop a unique perspective.
Our last P is Persistence. This theme became apparent when we observed that many of our seniors faced daunting obstacles and accomplished their goals by sheer will and determination; they did not give up.
Author Harry Bernstein and humanitarian Clara McBride Hale are two who exemplify these themes.
Tumblr media
Bernstein was born in Stockport, England in 1910 and began his education as an architect. But when his teacher discouraged his career choice, he decided to pursue a writing career and moved to New York to accomplish his goal. Although he made a living as a writer, his wife, Ruby, had to work as a school secretary to subsidize the family income. He did have one novel published, but it wasn’t successful. Undaunted, Bernstein continued to write, penning more than 20 novels that were never published.
In 2007, at age 97, he wrote an autobiographical novel, The Invisible Wall, which received critical acclaim. The book poignantly described the “invisible wall” that separated the Jewish and Christian sections of his home town. At age 98, he published The Dream, which told the story of his family’s move to America. Because these two books were so successful, he was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship at age 98 to pursue his writing.
At 99, he published the third book in the series, The Golden Willow: The Story of a Lifetime of Love, about his marriage to Ruby and later years. His novels have been translated into several languages. Bernstein stated: “If I had not lived until I was 90, I would not have been able to write this book…It could not have been done, even when I was 10 years younger. I wasn’t ready. God knows what other potentials lurk in other people, if we could only keep them alive well into their 90s.”
Tumblr media
When her husband died, Clara McBride Hale had to support herself and her three small children. Not wanting to leave her children unsupervised for extended periods of time, she opened a day care in her Harlem neighborhood. Many of the children in her care stayed overnight because their parents worked as domestics. She then decided to become a foster parent and raised 40 foster children, all of whom pursued a college education. At 64, after 28 years, she retired from the foster care system. Soon after, her daughter referred a drug-addicted mother and baby to Hale for help. Before long, she was caring for all this mother’s drug-addicted children.
As the word spread throughout New York City, more and more drug-addicted babies were left in Hale’s care. During the first year and a half, her family provided financial and other support to keep her mission going. Then, the Borough of Manhattan president, Percy Sutton, arranged public funding. Also, John Lennon left provisions for support of Hale House in his will.
In 1975, Hale House moved to 122nd Street where it remains today. After successfully reuniting hundreds of families, only 12 children had to be placed for adoption. At age 85, Clara McBride Hale was honored by President Ronald Reagan for her humanitarian work. She stated: “I’m not an American hero, I’m just someone who loves children.”
“Triumphant aging,” as exemplified by Bernstein and Hale, is a counter perspective to the pervasive negative beliefs about aging. Do you, your relatives or friends have untapped potentials or abandoned dreams? If so, consider what George Elliot said: “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.”
7 famous people who found success later in life.
You don’t have to become rich and famous to be a success. Doing what you love, the way you want to do it, is success.  There are thousands of people who happily write, draw, paint, make quilts, make pottery, bake, knit, and more, all because it brings them joy.

The rebellion in animal farm
The animals have taken the control of the farm, but 77 years after the rebellion, Mr. Jones’s son Arthur and his friends Paul, Thomas, John, Michael are planning to take the control again over the farm, it is the next generation of humans versus the next generation of animals. The plan consists of an invasion, control, and capture of animals that try to escape. Can they do it?
The animals had taken the control of the farm, after a big rebellion they expelled the humans from the farm and survived to an attack against them. The animals fought themselves, but they continued to survive, after some negatives casualties they built the windmill. But then things start going out of control, the food was short and animals were not happy with the farm, some of them were trying to escape, some saw the paradise in the clouds.
NOW (1994)
Had passed 77 years since the rebellion, now, the 2nd generation of animals are on the farm, and the 2nd generation of humans too. Pepkin is in the control of the farm, the most intelligent pig on the farm he sleeps in the house with the best blanket in the UK, the other pigs sleep in the house too, but on the floor because there isn’t enough blanket. Besides this, the production is low, the animals don’t have the desire to produce more, they are tired, they can’t even produce a blanket to a pig, because they even have food. The farm is in a really bad way, most of the animals are planning to escape from the farm, maybe go to Mr. Pilkington’s farm, Foxwood, some of them are trying to make a coup d’etat.
On the other hand, Mr. Jones's son, Arthur and his friend, John, Thomas, Paul, Michael are making a plan to take control again of the farm.
The plan is to first, agree with the animals, in the agreement, Paul will give food to the animals and the animals will give him gold, that agreement will make Paul take a look on the farm and see how the animals are positioned and will make it easy to conquer the farm. Besides this, when Paul is giving the food for the second time, Arthur, Thomas, and Michael will enter the farm by the back and will dominate the house, making the pigs and Pepkin hostages, this will make the animals of the farm surrender because their main leaders are in danger. In the meanwhile, John will be in the front of the farm with a big truck to catch every animal that tries to escape from the farm, he will have in his hand a remote drone to explode the barn if the animals show resistance.
The plan was ready and the day has come. Paul was getting near the entrance of the farm to talk with the animals. Suddenly 3 horses appeared in his front, inside the farm already. Paul has not hesitated,  he approached the 3 horses, they were skinny and weak, probably without food for a few days. Paul immediately got 4 cereal bars and divided between them, they were happy and let Paul enter the farm. This were all part of the plan, including make the animals think that they were affectionate. Paul entered the farm and saw the place, it was dirty, animals were eating themselves to survive. Paul called for Pepkin and he came. After, Paul talked about the dealing and Pepkin without thinking accepted it.
After Paul returned home, he created a map of the farm and where each animal/group stays on the farm. But the plan has changed, in that night, 4pm, Arthur, Paul and Thomas will enter the farm from the backdoors and silently will dominate the house and make the pigs hostages, in the meanwhile, Michael and John will dominate the barn and silently agroup the animals and put a fence that can't be broken, and the animals can't run away, because after the control of the farm, they will eat all of them. The plan was done, now they needed to put in practise.
It was 3:58 and every one was in their position, carrying a MP5 and some equipments, like helmet, radios (to communicate themselves), a kevlar vest and some hand grenades. The clock of the house was heard by the men. It was 4pm.
The 2 groups put their night-vision and entered the farm, the first 3 men was around the house and broked the door, entering the house, quickly they gone upstairs and saw Pepkin and the pigs sleeping, they called the radio, “ We are in the control of the situation here”, the other group replied, “Copy, entering the barn”. While entering, the animals were not there, they has escaped earlier, so, they would just eat porks in the next day.
In the house, Arthur shouted “everyone in the ground, this is a revenge to my father’s farm that you had stolen. Now everyone will go to the slaughterhouse to be slaughter”, without any chance, the animals were going to the slaughterhouse. After a few hours, they were coming back bloody.
In the next day, Arthur called everyone in the city to celebrate the returning of the farm to his hands, in the barbecue, they eaten a lot of pork and drinked beer until they fall.
After a week, they bought new animals and started to produce again, but now respecting the animals and just slaughtering them when they die. The farm was like the old one, but with more respect.

Photographer collaborating on wearable jewelry art
Mick Rock
When famed photographer Mick Rock shows up for the Mick Rock Iconic Gallery Show at The Jewelry Studio in Plainview on Oct. 20 and Oct. 21, it’ll represent a case of creative worlds fusing together. The Studio’s owner and driving force, Robert Pepkin, collaborated with Rock on a number of limited-edition wearable jewelry art inspired by the former’s shots and designed by the duo. Introduced by longtime friend and veteran promoter Dave Glicker roughly three decades ago, Rock and Pepkin are finally working together for the first time. It’s a notion that intrigued Rock.
“What [Robert] was keen to do was work with me on some things, which we have been doing. We decided to do an exhibition where we mix the prints up with art and the jewelry. That’s something different and I’m happy to do it,” Rock explained. “All of the pieces are based on my photographs. A lot of them are shaped like pics, but of course, they’re much more exotic. It was his enthusiasm to do it that got me into this. Then I saw his own work and I said we should do it. I haven’t done anything like this before. We consult with each other, but he does the actual work.”
The Jewelry Studio owner Robert Pepkin
For Pepkin, who got his start attending Pratt Institute for Fine Art before working with fine jewelry artist Maria Mencher for extra income, the chance to finally work with Rock was equally appealing to him.
“The attraction to Mick’s work for me comes from the many theatrical undertones, from the drama behind the legendary black and white Queen II album cover to capturing the dramatic poses of Iggy Pop on stage,” he said. “All of his shots capture the spirit of the artist or band he works with. The same has gone for me when trying to create something that someone will wear. You have to capture their spirit because the pieces become part of them and part of their own history.”
While Mick Rock’s name may not immediately jump out to the casual music fan, the timeless images he’s captured over the past five decades certainly will. The septuagenarian fotog’s other notable album covers include Lou Reed’s Transformer, Iggy Pop’s Raw Power, The Ramones’ End of the Century. Syd Barrett’s The Madcap Laughs and Joan Jett’s I Love Rock’n’Roll.
In addition, Rock has a treasure trove of images he shot that have been published in a number of books including Glam: An Eyewitness Account, Classic Queen, Picture This/Debbie Harry & Blondie and The Rise of David Bowie 1972-1973. It hasn’t been a bad run for someone who started out studying modern language and literature at Cambridge University in the mid-1960s who had never picked up a camera before.
Classsmate and friend Syd Barrett’s debut solo album, The Madcap Laughs, was the first album cover Mick Rock ever shot
“I was orientated much more towards literature and poetry. So this opened up my third eye, and I started to play around with a friend’s camera, because I didn’t actually own one at the time. But he came from a wealthy family and he never used his camera, which is sad. So he let me play with hit. Not that I had any intentions. The idea in the late ’60s of seeing photography as some kind of career—well, there weren’t many opportunities really,” he recalled. “My heroes were not photographers—they were crazy poets like the French Symbolists, the English Romantics and the American Beat poets. And of course, all of them consumed copious amounts of drugs in pursuit of their art. So that may have been part of the appeal as well. That was how I looked at my early subjects. Obviously, Syd Barrett, Lou [Reed], Iggy [Pop] and David [Bowie]—I saw them all as being crazy poets. And I certainly saw them as artists—that’s for sure.”
From left: David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed (Photo by Mick Rock)
For Rock, the people he started shooting early on would become dear friends who he would share experiences and excesses with.
“When I was younger, I spent a lot more non-shooting time with people like David, Lou, Syd and Freddie. It was a different and more intimate experience, because these were friends of mine,” he recalled. “We were all similar ages, so it was a different kind of experience. So I have a certain affection for the early characters.”
Having become fast friends with Bowie after meeting him backstage at a gig in Birmingham, England, in March 1973, Rock’s relationship with the late music icon found him creatively collaborating with the Thin White Duke on a new art form—the music video. Among the songs Rock and Bowie gave visual life to where “John, I’m Only Dancing,” “Jean Genie,” “Space Oddity” and “Life on Mars.” For the photographer turned videographer, it was a labor of love.
youtube
“All of these were shot for a couple of dollars. But they didn’t really have any outlets for them in those days,” Rock explained. “No one was offering me any money. I wanted to do them and David wanted me to do them, so I just did them. But it was a lot of years before they started to show up. Obviously, David started to pop up here and there on MTV. But nowadays, they are in museums all over the world, including the MOMA. They were inducted a few years ago, along with David’s other videos as part of their permanent collection.”

While Rock was splitting time between London and New York City, the glam aura of the former gradually gave way to the gritty vibe of the latter with the photographer eventually decamping to the Big Apple in 1982, And while he’s best known for his ’70s work, Rock has continued shooting and working. Having traded in cocaine and cigarettes for meditation and acupuncture 22 years ago after undergoing surgery doesn’t hurt. In recent times, he’s shot a number of current artists including The Black Keys, Daft Punk, Alicia Keys, Nas and Father John Misty. The devotion to his craft and refusal to become a relic from the past was a big part of what informed the 2016 documentary SHOT! The Psycho-Spiritual Mantra of Rock and continues to drive him to this day.
“I didn’t like [the documentary] for the longest time, but it got better and better. I know a lot of people speak well of it. I think the tugging and to and fro between Barney [Clay], the director, and myself, produced something original. I didn’t want there to be a lot of talking heads—certainly I was in there with my lips flapping. But it would immediately become a TV documentary and I didn’t want it to be all that,” he said.
“I’ve shot Janelle Monáe and I’ve shot Lana Del Rey, Snoop Dogg, Mark Ronson—all kinds of characters. Even though I get tagged as, ‘The Man Who Shot the ’70s,’ I do try to remind people that some of the modern work was in the documentary. I remind people that I don’t want to be tagged as some creature from the ’70s. That’s important to me.”
Mick Rock will be appearing at the Mick Rock Iconic Gallery Show on October 20 and October 21 at The Jewelry Studio, 1107 Old Country Rd. in Plainview. For more information, visit Facebook.com/The-Jewelry-Studio or call 516-933-4166.
