2022 Fanfiction Reading Challenge

June 2022 Stats

Well, my friends. June was as crazy as I thought it would be. Aside from the whole horrible state of *gestures at everything*, the Salmon fam moved out of our house and into a hotel for a MONTH - right in time for the HS graduation of my middle son (and our fun impromptu grad trip to Los Angeles and my sunburn from hell). Thankfully, there are only SIX more sleeps until I’m in my brand new house. I have missed my own bed and I never thought I would say this - but I miss eating food I made myself in my own kitchen. You know how they say that adulthood is basically complaining about what to make for dinner every night until you die? Well eating out every night doesn’t change the fact that you still have to decide at which restaurant to eat... it’s a never ending problem (and an expensive one).

ANYWAY - enough about my real life. Let’s talk fic because we all need a little brightness in our lives right now because *gestures at everything* I’m JUST shy of 10 million words read and I’m just over halfway through the year. My goal of +20 mill for the year *might* be within reach.

Pairings were fun this month. I read 10 new ships (some highlights were Eddie/Chrissy from Stranger Things, Phoenix/Bob from Top Gun: Maverick, and even a Ted/Rebecca from Ted Lasso), I also read some of YOUR favourites (from your bookmarks on Ao3) - how else would I have found a heartbreakingly angsty Stevie/Alexis (Schitt’s Creek) fic if it weren’t for you? So thank you!

I’m still working on my Hard (72/88) and Extreme(35/65) challenges. There are several tasks at the @fanfic-reading-challenge that deal with minorities. Do any of you currently have favourite stories with a minority (any minority) as a main character that you can direct me to?

Here are some of my favourite reads and rereads for this month. I hope you will read them and leave lots of loving reviews to let these awesome authors know how much you appreciate them.

Tumblr Meet Cute (2 fic series - T) by Toryb - Tory wrote this one several years ago and it was SO fun to revisit. Betty meets Jughead on tumblr - and they fall in love and then meet in person and it’s the sweetest thing ever. I was feeling nostalgic for Bughead fandom fluffiness and this fit the bit. Fellow Buggies - if you haven’t read these two one-shots yet, you need to. DO IT!

let's make some music (fuck all of the bullshit) by @feelavalanche (2/2 - E) - My girl wrote this one - and I am a SUCKER for Musician AUs. Fez and Lexi are both singers with grammy nominated albums and they are SO CUTE together.

only good things happen here by @sweetsoundsofignorance (6/6 - E) - HELLO DARKNESS MY OLD FRIEND! Okay, so I had a lot of feelings while I read this one. It was dark. SO dark. But the final chapter was SO FREAKING cathartic! This fic is canon-divergent at the 'Key Party’ and includes a very dark Betty who does dark things for good reasons? It was both hard and wonderful to read. I don’t know how to explain it - but I think you should read it if you like morally grey (or morally black) characters and character motivation.

Postcode Envy by @bewitchingredhead36 (33/33 - E) - I started reading this Veronica Mars fic in 2014 on ff.net - and there was a big break and then the lovely author started posting chapters again 2022 (thankfully I was subscribed so I got the notification) and it was finally finished in June. The premise is - Cindy Mackenzie is hit in the head with a baseball and wakes up back in high school - but not as Cindy Mackenzie, but as Madison Sinclair (as if she wasn’t switched at birth at all) - but she remembers Veronica and Cassidy and Dick and Logan and everyone.

I wish I had seen it yesterday when I was drunk and happy but sadly I didn't get the notification. Instead, I got to see it this morning after getting rudely awaken by my phone ringing; head pounding and hungover from too much wine.

I have now added a general timeline for b!v to the notes on the series on AO3 (and to a separate chapter on the first book on Wattpad). I'm putting it in this post as well for ease of access in my tag for Broken!Verse, and because a lot of longtime readers likely do not go onto the actual series page, only the new fics when they get a subscription notification, and therefore don't see the notes.

Séance 14 : Une déconnexion volontaire plus que nécessaire

Le monde dans lequel nous vivons actuellement nous propose, bien évidemment, toujours plus de progrès technologiques. L’ère numérique offre une multitude d'avantages quant à la communication instantanée, l’accès à l’information ou encore des solutions durables en réduisant la consommation de papier. Cependant, malgré tous ces avantages, je crois qu’il est extrêmement important de préciser les inconvénients de l’usage abusif du numérique.

En 2023, le bien-être mental de tous est de plus en plus mis de l’avant. On néglige parfois le fait que la première source de stress ou d’angoisse peut tout simplement provenir de l’usage de notre téléphone cellulaire. « 65% des 18-24 ans ont l’impression de trop utiliser leur téléphone, et 54% souhaitent l’utiliser moins ». Les notifications incessantes, la pression d’être toujours connecté et la surcharge d’information peuvent créer de l’anxiété chez les gens. Personnellement, il m’arrive parfois de volontairement « oublié » mon téléphone cellulaire à la maison question d’être déconnecté toute la journée et d’avoir un prétexte de ne pas y répondre. Cette pression de répondre ou d’être présent sur les réseaux est tellement répandue que plusieurs doivent se déconnecter totalement pour leur bien-être. Ces déconnexions volontaires sont de plus en plus commises par des célébrités ou des influenceurs. En effet, le célèbre acteur de Spider-Man, Tom Holland, a quitté Instagram pendant une période afin de préserver sa santé mentale (citer). Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande et Millie Bobby Brown ont également fait ce choix de déconnexion volontaire pendant des périodes indéterminées pour les mêmes raisons que Tom Holland (citer).

La déconnexion volontaire ne veut pas dire qu’il y a une rupture totale avec le monde numérique social, mais que son utilisation se voit plus réfléchie et limitée. D’après moi, tout le monde devrait participer à cette tendance de déconnexion. D’ailleurs, Capsana, une entreprise québécoise qui se dévoue totalement à la promotion de la santé et des saines habitudes de vie, propose un événement qui a pour nom PAUSE. Cet événement, qui s’est produit le 23 octobre et qui s’est reproduit le 19 novembre, veut encourager les jeunes de 15 à 29 ans à se déconnecter des écrans pendant une journée entière.

Finalement, se déconnecter volontairement des réseaux n’est pas simplement un acte de retrait, il représente une démarche pour une vie numérique plus équilibrée et saine pour tous. Dans un monde connecté en permanence, la déconnexion volontaire devient la meilleure solution pour préserver notre sérénité d’esprit.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month serves as a wake-up call, spotlighting the pervasive and often hidden world of abuse. It’s a time when we stand in solidarity with survivors and their families, amplifying their voices and experiences. A particularly vulnerable group often overlooked in discussions about domestic violence is the senior community. They have unique challenges and vulnerabilities.

Understanding Domestic Violence in the Senior Community

The idea of retirement often paints a picture of tranquility, where the golden years are marked by relaxation, family time, and pursuing long-held passions. It’s an age that many anticipate, expecting it to be without any significant tribulations. Unfortunately, for some seniors this idealized notion is overshadowed by the dark reality of domestic violence.

It’s a common misconception that domestic violence is an issue predominantly faced by younger populations. Unfortunately, older adults are not immune to domestic abuse. According to the Department of Justice, at least 10 percent of those over 65 will experience some sort of domestic violence. The declining physical health, cognitive changes, or even the loss of a partner can make seniors vulnerable targets for abuse.

Within the senior community, the nature of the abuse can be multifaceted:

Emotional Abuse: This could be in the form of verbal assaults, threats, or constant belittling, which can be profoundly scarring, especially when coming from loved ones or trusted caregivers.

Financial Abuse: Seniors often have to rely on others to manage their finances. This dependency can be exploited by unscrupulous individuals misusing funds, stealing property, or coercing seniors into making undesired financial decisions.

Physical Abuse: Physical frailty can make seniors easy targets for physical violence. This could range from slaps and pushes to more grievous bodily harm.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month affords us the opportunity to raise awareness and support survivors of domestic violence in accessing and maintaining safe and affordable housing. As HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge stated, “At HUD, we are committed to ensuring that those who experience sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, and human trafficking have immediate access to safe, stable, and affordable housing and do not lose their housing because of the violence.”

At AHEPA Senior Living, we pride ourselves on meeting the Secretary’s commitment by providing safe and dignified affordable housing to older adults that allows them to thrive. The service coordination team is often on the frontline to help residents by connecting them to local domestic violence service providers.

Upon its enactment, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act (VAWA) of 2013 significantly expanded housing protections to victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking across HUD’s key programs, including the application of regulations all multifamily assisted housing properties, such as HUD Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly.

Furthermore, as part of VAWA’s most recent reauthorization by Congress in 2022, Congress required HUD to implement and enforce the housing provisions of VAWA consistent with, and in a manner that provides, the same rights and remedies as those provided for in the Fair Housing Act. Therefore, a complaint can be filed with HUD’s Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) if one’s VAWA’s rights are violated.

Examples of VAWA protections and coverage include non-discrimination, notifications of occupancy rights, and emergency transfers, among others.

It is important to note, however, that HUD and AHEPA Senior Living HUD are not direct service providers and do not provide individual counseling, crisis response, or legal services to individuals who have experienced domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and/or human trafficking.

In a world where instances of domestic violence occur with heartbreaking frequency, the existence of nonprofit organizations like Penelope House provide the lifesaving services survivors and their families require. Known for its relentless dedication, Penelope House has established itself as a sanctuary for domestic violence survivors and their children, offering them the chance to rebuild, recover, and rediscover their inner strength.

That’s why, through our Giving Back program, we are proud to support Penelope House and other domestic violence centers, such as Health Imperatives – Penelope’s Place — with grant funding to help them meet their missions. Their work, although rooted in providing physical safety, extends far beyond that—it’s a holistic approach to healing, encompassing emotional support, psychological recovery, and empowerment.

Our hope is that by supporting organizations such as Penelope House and Penelope’s Place that we can help champion change through a ripple effect that is both widespread and lasting. Together, we not only seek to provide immediate relief and support to survivors but also work toward proactive solutions, community awareness, and preventive measures.

We are also proud to have members of our leadership team actively serving on boards of nonprofits that are providing aid and services to domestic violence survivors.

AHEPA Senior Living Vice President of Human Resources and Training Carol Whiteman serves as the Vice Chair of the Board of Beacon of Hope Crisis Center in Indianapolis.
