here’s why mike and will have the best relationship on the entire show and why they work together so beautifully
*these are just my personal opinions! analysing character behaviour and relationships is SO important in stories and mike and will have always made the most sense for so many reasons. i truly believe that they are soulmates and they belong together. i’ll also edit this post whenever there’s more to add!
- they have been friends since they were 4 years old and have known each other for most of their lives. they were each other’s first friend as well, and mike said that asking will to be his friend was the best thing he's ever done. this is the happiest memory for both of them because it was the start of their journey together. this is also mike’s best monologue and probably my favourite scene in the entire show for so many reasons.
- mike made the choice to ask will to be his friend. he didn’t just stumble on him in the woods because of “dumb luck” (his words, not mine) and he didn’t become fascinated with him and decide to let him stay with him just because he’s a “superhero with powers”. he loves him for who he is and it’s always been that way. from the moment he saw him on the swings, mike saw himself in will too; another lonely boy with no friends, and they became close immediately. they found each other when they needed each other most.
- they share the same interests and hobbies.
- they can actually be themselves around each other. they don't pretend to be people they're not.
- they bring out the best in each other and the love they have for each other is so beautiful and genuine.
- trust and honesty is important to them.
- their personality types are the most compatible. will is INFP and mike is ENFJ. you can read about their compatibility here and you’ll notice a lot of things mentioned in this article actually match what we’ve seen in the show. people consider INFP and ENFJ types to be soulmates as well. they are both described as people looking for deep emotional connections, serious about love, hold strong values and believe in good and open communication. we’ve seen this throughout mike and will’s entire relationship, from the very first episode when will tells mike the truth about the roll. honesty is so important to both of them and they’re actually able to communicate and confide in one another. we don’t see either of them do this with any other characters.
- they’ve experienced the same struggles (being bullied their entire lives for being nerds and outcasts) so they understand each other completely and can confide in each other when they need to.
- they’re on the same page. neither of them feel superior or inferior to the other and this is very important to check when it comes to relationships. they are equals. (unlike mike and el, where mike literally admitted that he feels inferior to her because she’s a “superhero” with powers, and he has this obsession and fascination with her because of that. he is overly dependent on her and couldn’t even say he loved her until she got her powers back and he was convinced she “needed” him. it’s not healthy or fair to either of them at all and people need to understand that).
- they understand each other better than anyone else and sometimes they don’t even need to say anything to know what the other means or how they're feeling.
for example:
will: "i didn't say it."
mike: "you didn't have to."
mike noticing will's behaviour even when he says nothing.
mike: "he's quiet today."
lucas: "he's always quiet."
and then the camera zooms in on mike looking extremely concerned and worried about him. he also notices will looking sad at the roller rink even though he was pretending to push him away and ignore him. throughout season 2, mike stays by will's side and asks if he's okay. he also does this in season 3 in the cinema when will looks worried. mike has always been extremely observant when it comes to will and he's not like this with anyone else.
- will only chooses to tell mike about things going on in the upside down when he’s afraid. obviously he speaks to other people about it when they come to him and ask him, but he always mentions it to mike first. in season 2 episode 5, will is worried about the mindflayer spying on them and mike calms him down and tells him “we won’t let him” when he notices he’s anxious. he puts his hand on top of his when he sees that he’s shaking. in season 4 episode 9, will is worried about vecna and tells mike what he plans to do. mike calms him down again and tells him that they’ll stop him before putting his hand on his shoulder. in season 2 when will and jonathan are having a talk, will expresses his frustration with how everyone is treating him like a baby. he mentions joyce, dustin and lucas, but not mike, because mike has never made him feel that way and he always makes him feel safe and comfortable.
- mike’s priority has always been will, from the very first episode in the show. he is the only person along with joyce that never gave up on finding him, even after seeing his “body”. mike and joyce are also the only two people will remembers when he’s at the hospital.
- their relationship has the most build up and they have the most history together. even if we don’t see it on screen or it’s not “canonically romantic” or shoved in our faces, it doesn’t mean it’s not there. it’s canon that they have the most history and that’s a fact. they have known each other the longest and they know each other better than anyone else. when they finally get into a relationship, it won’t be forced or rushed at all, because it’s been developing slowly. and i think that’s a good thing because they’re older and they can think more maturely. they’re not little kids that barely know each other (cough) and they actually have time to fully think about themselves and their relationships.
- will is most passionate about art and mike keeps all his artwork.
- mike only smiles in photos with will.
- will grew up with an abusive, homophobic father and his home life wasn’t easy when he was around. but mike became a safe place for will. he was the reason that he no longer had to be alone and then they ended up sharing the same interests and hobbies, such as playing d&d. getting invested in fictional worlds and playing games was an escape and distraction from the real world, especially for will, who came from a broken family that was struggling financially and also because of his abusive father. he would go to mike’s basement to escape home so he wouldn’t have to hear his parents arguing or get yelled at, and he remained close with the party, as they were his only friends. will is also extremely passionate about art, and he draws things that mean the most to him. mike keeps all of his drawings and he looks through them whenever he thinks of will. we also know that in season 4, will paints something special for mike and tells him that he's the heart; that he's his heart, even if he doesn't say it directly. they are both each other’s safe place and comfort.
- will has always needed mike in his life, and he even admits that during his car monologue. mike also admitted that he wants to be needed by someone because he’s always been naturally protective of others and his main role is to protect. without that, he doesn’t really feel worth anything. that’s why they fit together so beautifully, because mike can give will what he needs and will can give mike what he needs. and unlike mike and el’s relationship, mike and will’s is healthy and genuine because they’re on the same page and consider each other equals. will doesn’t feel inferior to mike, he just finds comfort and safety in him. and mike doesn’t feel superior to will by being protective of him, he just knows what will has always needed and he also finds comfort and safety in him as well. but the thing is, they have shared these roles too. it’s always equal and balanced. will isn’t just the one that needs protecting. will has protected mike as well. in season 2, he was willing to sacrifice his own life for everyone’s safety, right after mike was helping to communicate with him in the shed. in season 4, during the car monologue, will was protecting mike by caring about his feelings. mike was talking about el in the car and even though it was heartbreaking for will to do this, he wanted his best friend to be happy and tried to save his crumbling relationship by using el’s name when he was confessing his own feelings. he also gave mike the painting and told him that he was the heart the moment he saw that mike was upset. will didn’t have to do this, but it shows how much he loves and cares about mike. he could’ve confessed his own feelings or said the painting was from him only, but he didn’t. he just wanted to help mike get through whatever he was struggling with so he sacrificed his own feelings to protect mike. it’s beautiful but heartbreaking at the same time. and obviously we’ve seen mike protect will many times as well. in season 1 and 2, will was always mike’s main’s priority, without a doubt. season 1 was focused on finding will and season 2 was focused on protecting him and staying by his side. mike would always be there. whether it was by his bed at home, in the hospital, or even at meetings in the lab he didn’t even have to attend. he was always with will, providing him safety and comfort and being there when he needed him most.
- mike is known to be quite stubborn when it comes to apologising to people. in season 1, he refuses to apologise to lucas until he’s pushed to. in season 3, after el dumps him, he refuses to run after her and apologise. but in the following episode after will and mike have their first big argument, mike immediately rides his bike in a storm to will’s house so that he can apologise, because he had to make sure will was okay and that he knew he was genuinely sorry. he never wants to hurt will. he also does the same thing in season 4 episode 4 after they fight at the roller rink. mike approaches him first and admits what he did wrong. he doesn’t let will blame himself because it wasn’t his fault. mike takes full responsibility and apologises genuinely. he also explains why he acted the way he did so that will understands. but i’ve noticed that he can’t even do this with el… when they had a fight in the previous episode, he couldn’t even explain why he couldn’t say he loved her (and when we find out the reason in volume 2, it’s the most pathetic excuse lol. it’s either horrible writing or this is intentional). they’ve never been on the same page and they’ve never been themselves around each other. they don’t know what honest communication is at all. but anyways, mike explains why he was acting weirdly, and he admits it’s because he missed will and hawkins wasn’t the same without him. he tells will that he was scared he lost him. in the car scene, will also admits that he's scared to lose mike and that's the reason why it seemed like he was pushing him away. this explains their lack of contact when they were away from each other and why they became more distant. both of them stopped trying, because they're both afraid of losing each other because they love each other. this is the only thing that makes sense because they left on good terms at the end of season 3 and there's no other reason for them to become distant. whereas with mike and el, it's the complete opposite. they were contacting each other the entire time. so how can the line "if [she] was mean to you or [she] seemed like [she] was pushing you away, it's probably because [she's] scared of losing you just like you're scared of losing [her]" be applied to el when she never even pushed mike away at all? only will did that. and mike did that to will too by not contacting him either and pushing him away at the roller rink. this entire line is about mike and will.
- both of mike's monologues happened because of will and i talk about it in detail here. i think this is a really big thing.
- here is another long post of mine where i talk about why i love byler. it has a lot of what i mentioned here plus some other stuff.
- mike has a special "will smile" and talks to will in a soft voice that he doesn't use with anyone else which is adorable :')

In my mind, the string of fate connecting two soulmates doesn't appear until they meet. When Pac and Mike met, neither really knew what it meant. Nobody really talks about soulmates since they're pretty rare overall. They really only learned through research in books and stuff, and not through example or practice. They nearly cut their connection while in prison for a few reasons.
They both have this awful habit of pulling each other closer (even if they're standing next to each other) using their string and through their mindlink. Sometimes, it's more forceful than other times, but every time, it's very noticeable.
-miscellaneousplusmore.
Oh I love them almost cutting the string at prison actually, it fits that things were shaky a bit in there and how that bond could be used against them

This might be a weird thing to ask, but will you tell me about some of your favorite non-canon OTPs (as mentioned on your Valentine's Day post), and your headcanons about them?
girl that's not weird at all!! I would be THRILLED to share them :D
one thing about my non-canon OTPs is that they are so non-canon, in fact, that it's impossible for them to ever BE canon. I mean they both involve a character that literally has one scene and little to no lines. neither of these couples have ever even met on-screen and they probably never will, but is that gonna stop me? absolutely not
first off, let me introduce you to the gloriousness that is Jacen Syndulla and Paige Tico
(Paige Tico is Rose Tico's sister from The Last Jedi who sacrificed herself by blowing up her ship for the rebellion, but we're going to ignore that last bit for ultimate fluff purposes and also because on this blog we ignore every character death ever)
their ship name is Paicen
they meet in a marketplace on Lothal
Paige and Rose are looking for an important ship part because their ship broke down, but it's hard to find and they're getting frustrated. so the first time Jacen sees Paige is when she's yelling at someone for not having the part they need
and he thinks
that is the most beautiful woman I've ever seen in my life
so, in true Kanan fashion, he goes over to Paige and tells her very smoothly that he'd be very happy to fix up her ship for her because what a coincidence, he just so happens to be a mechanic! but Paige, oh boy Paige, she takes this the wrong way and starts yelling at HIM for being a hotshot pilot and she can do it herself, thank you very much, and if he doesn't know how to find a chip for a standard nav reader then he should GET LOST
and, also in true Kanan fashion, Jacen has two thoughts:
A) I think I'm in love with you
B) oh no I messed up
he apologizes for assuming that she needed help and Paige just stares because ... she wasn't expecting an apology. this guy is definitely not who she thought he was. they get on the same page, they laugh it off and introduce themselves and exchange contact information and eventually go on a date (which is very successful)
they're like the next-generation version of Kanera: just very lovey dovey and sweet and in love with each other
Jacen brings Paige flowers all the time (and roses for Rose because he's a gentleman)
a silly headcanon I have is that when Jacen turned 16 he turned into a "heartthrob" and suddenly ALL the girls were falling over themselves to get him to notice them ... he doesn't even have to do anything, he just walks into the room and they all swoon. the only girl who didn't swoon immediately was Paige 😌
when I was first obsessed with them like two years ago, way before the Ahsoka show aired, both Jacen and Paige had only one (1) canon scene and little-to-no lines. and I was like, well that clearly means they're soulmates. they're perfect for each other
now let me introduce you to my other favorite non-canon OTP: Crosshair and Bultar Swan
(Bultar Swan is canonically Plo Koon's padawan - yes he did have a padawan, you're welcome - and she's in the Battle of Geonosis in Attack of the Clones! and also she doesn't have much of a canon personality, so for the sake of ultimate fluff once again, we're going to say that she's similar to Luna Lovegood & spaces out a lot & is also very connected to the Force. just a very traditional Jedi)
THEIR ship name is Sniper Swan
Paicen was love at first sight? These two are a slowburn. A really, really, really slow slowburn
they first meet in the Clone Wars, but there's nothing particularly special about it. Bultar goes on a couple missions with the Bad Batch and they work well together. she and Crosshair make a good team in battle. it's all business-like and on friendly terms
Bultar is a very peaceful person - she doesn't use her lightsaber a lot, and she prefers to talk things through before resorting to extreme things like violence. she genuinely respects all the clones and thinks of them as people, just like her
Crosshair sees this, because he sees a lot of things with his enhanced vision, and he doesn't understand it. he tries to poke and prod at her to try and get her to crack, to snap back at him like other Jedi might, but she doesn't. she takes all of his cutting and snide remarks with patience and calmness and eventually he mirrors the patience back. he can ask her questions that normally others would start an argument with him over it, whereas she just gives him a realistic logical answer
they know each other for years before they even think about catching feelings for each other as a possibility
depending on the timeline - canon, No-Order-66 AU, Adoption Magnet even (👀) - they get together in different ways
but it usually goes something like this: after years of knowing each other, Crosshair starts catching feelings for her - and of course because it's Crosshair it takes him a long time to admit that, even just to himself - while Bultar is as oblivious as Adrien Agreste when it comes to Marinette. she has no clue until someone (either Wolffe or her own clone captain) tells her about it and warns her to stay away from Crosshair for her own good
poor Bultar who's been raised in the Jedi Temple her entire life has no idea what to do with this information - people are capable of falling in love with her? she's capable of falling in love? - so she has a bit of a mental crisis
she takes some time to think through everything, carefully process her thoughts and emotions and feelings - and when she has successfully done so, she's surprised to find that she ... does, actually, like Crosshair back
it still takes them a bit to get together but all things considering, it's MUCH much shorter than the other stages of their relationship XD
Crosshair keeps Bultar grounded in the moment and Bultar helps Crosshair be more comfortable with showing emotions and being vulnerable <3
man that got long XD technically I have one more I invented - Korkie Kenobi Kryze and Soniee, one of his classmates from that one Clone Wars arc - but I don't have nearly as many headcanons for those two lol. Hope you enjoyed getting to hear about my non-canon OTPs!! (I know I had a great time typing this all out hehe)

Soul-mates
TITLE: Soul-mates CHAPTER NO./ONE SHOT: one-shot AUTHOR: colifower ORIGINAL IMAGINE: Imagine Loki’s spotify wrapped. Wait, what’s that? They added a musical soulmate in this year’s edition? RATING: PG NOTES/WARNINGS: my AO3 version has Tess' spotify wrapped up and some basic mechanics behind the selection of the Soul-mates. I honestly couldn't bother to copy them here so... bon apple titty, as the youths say
Tumblr media
"Huh," said Loki, sprawled over Thor's sofa. "Have you seen this?" Thor peeked over his shoulder and shrugged. "With the ammount of times you've rickrolled me this year it's no wonder it's on your top five. 420 views? Seriously?"
The younger snickered. "I actually rickrolled you 413 times, but I HAD to play it up to 420. I was talking about the music soul-mate feature." "Oh, yeah! They added the feature this year." "Here it says it's somebody with the username Space_Stoned_420" "With that username they need to be somewhat like you." "I'm intrigued. I think I'm gonna find them." "What?" "Aren't you intrigued? Who is your music soul-mate? Show me!"
Thor took his phone out of his pocket and smashed it against the closest wall. Being the heir of a galactic empire meant that he neither had a concept of money nor was he going to start any time soon.
"I only listen to Bears and Beards," said Thor. "So it makes sense that it's Fandral and Hogun's podcast account." "I thought they stopped uploading after the first wave of negative coments." Thor shook his head. "They are my friends," he said full of pride. "But I would do anyways, the bear tips are just incredible." "What do you want them for? Do you have a boyfriend or something?" "They're not for that kind of bear. Most of the times, at least." "Do you have a bear, Thor?" "I like to support local queer artists." "You have not answered my question." "What question?" "Do you have a bear, Thor?" "Hm...?" said the eldest, walking slowly towards the door. "Thor." "...what?" Loki sighted. Thor kept avoiding the question. He stepped once again towards the exit. "Thor..." groaned the god of mischief. "Not this again." "Ok, I can explain..." Please do." "...They are an endangered species, so I brought two with me home because here on Asgard polar bears don't have any natural predators and..." "TWO POLAR BEARS?!" "It is part of a rescue program. Besides, mom and dad won't even notice..." "Thor! They hunt people! To eat them! Asgard is not prepared for another one of your experiments in invasive species." "Yes, well, I..." Thor sprinted out of the room and down the corridor, Loki followed suit, knife in hand. Later on, Loki sat on his bed, feet up on the wall, staring at his email inbox. He furrowed his eyebrow. It was spotify alerting him that Spaced_Stoned_420 followed him back on the music platform." That was the problem, wasn't it? No chat option in the music app. Loki sighted. At least he could give them a follow back. Perhaps even snoop on their playlist, surely their 'music soulmate' would have good taste. Loki was greeted with a collaborative playlist called 'follow this n00bmaster69', you bitch. He smiled.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The charm worked wonders on those midgardian mercenaries known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Loki was able to slide right under their noses and into the secured vault. He opened the case, as their instructions told him to. There layed...
"A cube?" "The sexiest cube in existance ;)" Loki blushed. The sound of the... being? reverbereated loudly in his head. "So... Space Stoned 420?" "You're missing a fiew _, but yes. That's me," continued the cube. "I go by Tess these days. It comes from Tesseract." "Oh, em... Loki. I mean... I'm n00bmaster69. I think we're spotify soulmates." "Oh yeah! I forgot about that," said the stone. "My brother has been recently involved with an AI. And by involved I mean intrinsically connected: they share a body." "I know the kind," said the magician, thinking of his brother's 'hammered dates' where the alcohol and the palm fruits were nowhere to be found.
"Yeah... he's been trying to set me up with increasingly more complicated algorithms. My tinder match called me a bluff for posting 'unrealistic body images'. It's not my fault I'm a powerful and mysterious cube." "That sucks, bestie." Tess sighted. "It's difficult out here. More if you look like I do." "I like it" said Loki. "Unexpected. Uncommon." "Thank you. It means a lot, it really does." "So... are you up to a date? I've heard that they sell boba tea here in Algeria. Globalization and all that." "What doesn 'tea' mean?" Loki wrinkled his nose. "It's... um... a drink. I think you'll like it." said the somewhat of a man, picking up the stone. He found Tess warm to the touch, and found himself fond of it." "Hell yeah >:P"

Kyle is getting the full-on pod squad love interest treatment now where he almost exclusively only interacts with Isobel and has to go off investigating stuff by himself for no reason whatsoever other than to further his own romance because none of these characters ever learn from past events and they certainly aren't allowed to drive the plot they're in. I am so confused by how badly they're handling Kybel despite the fact that it's an m/f ship. Neither Kyle's nor Isobel's feelings have manifested in a way that was particularly well done. One minute Kyle was glued to Steph's bedside and rejecting Isobel for her. The next he came back from his own coma fully in love with her. Now Isobel is going from wanting to share her deepest secrets with Anatsa and proclaiming her love to making eyes at Kyle in promo pics in a matter of days. And why is it only happening in a bubble where no one is allowed to notice these two might have feelings for each other? That's peak Malex right down to M*ria being the only one who knows how Kyle feels and being the worst friend possible anyway. Trevino and Lily are doing the absolute most but this still could have been so much more.
“Trevino and Lily are doing the absolute most but this still could have been so much more“ I feel like this is an issue the show is constantly having with nearly all their characters, but it’s especially glaring with Malex and now with Kybel. Kyle was still in love with Liz, until suddenly he wasn’t and there was Steph who was....SUCH a waste of time for an entire season, then she’s poof, gone, and we get nothing until Kyle wakes up from a coma and is supposedly so deeply in love with Isobel that m*ria is picking up on it with her “intuition”. Even though she apparently didn’t notice Michael was still in love with Alex in season 2 when she was going after him (though that shouldn’t have mattered when she already knew Alex was in love with Michael and feeling hopeful about the future 🙄). And we have her making meanspirited comments to both Michael and Kyle about the person she KNOWS they’re not with even though they want to be so like, what is that about? I thought she was a “saint”? 🙄🙄🙄🙄
And now we have had both Michael and Isobel tell someone else they love them, only for that person to break up with them, leaving Alex and Kyle as their “second choice” because they got rejected by the person they loved. We KNOW Alex was always it for Michael but 99.9% of that is down to Tyler and Vlamis selling the FUCK out of those first handful of episodes and being able to carry that love through 🚗 undercutting the narrative for all of season 2, and Chris just...totally ignoring season 2 and any of the fallout for Malex to rush them back together. I’m sure Lily and Trevino will sell this as hard as they can, but it’s never going to be quite enough considering they have 6 episodes left with Kyle in them (unless they changed his contract for more episodes) to build up their soulmates story. That’s around 4.5 hours of total episode time which is...not a lot for Isobel who was just confessing how desperately in love with Anatsa she was to recover from that AND realize she likes Kyle AND that she’s ready for the epic soulmate connection like Michael and Max have, AND for Kyle to be ready to put it all out there AGAIN after being rejected so many times, and that’s just getting them together! That’s not even seeing them being adorable and in love and fighting for each other like Echo and Malex!
No matter what we get it will be rushed, and they could have avoided ALL of that by just...setting up Kybel in season 2! They didn’t even have to get together yet! But had they cut all the nonsense with Steph and not kept Kyle from interacting with his best friend Alex, and the Pod Squad and being involved in the main plot (whatever TF that ended up being), then they would have had some groundwork laid with time for Isobel to address being against getting into anything serious after Noah and that leading to her exploring her attraction to women and having some flings and discovering herself and who she is without Noah. Season 3 should have set up Kybel a little more firmly and then we could have had them being a power couple in season 4. But that would require episode planning, good pacing, and NOT wasting time on pointless drama and we can’t have that now can we?

I know it was originally an exo fic but the evanescence/ remember me story is so so beautiful I cried twice. i hope the main character is happy ...but I was wondering what do you think would have happened once she realized that now that Mark is gone, Haechan is to be her soulmate (hence the knuckle scars)? Do you think she would have taken it well right away? would love to hear your thoughts!
hello @haesunflower thank you so much for reading my fics!
well if I had to write an epilogue for Remember Me, I think it would go something like this (bear with me, this could be long)
Hyuck would try to apologize some more. he knows he’s wrong but it doesn’t mean that his love for her isn’t real.
she always tries to avoid him, doesn’t even dare to take a look at his eyes and it pains them both because she actually misses him, so so terribly
she asks him to give her some space and he agrees with a heavy heart but constantly checks on her in secret, making sure that she’s okay and will go straight to her aid if she ever needs a shoulder to cry on
she attends mark’s funeral even when she doesn’t know who he was, then she meets his family. Surprised seeing her there, Mark’s mother asks her whether she has regained back her memories and she shakes her head no but begs for her to tell what happened between her and Mark. Reluctantly, his mother tells her the truth.
Devastated, she confronts her own parents about it, about why they’d been hiding Mark from her and they answer it’s partially because of Mark’s request, since she looked happier without him in the picture.
Timeskip to a few months later. As she sits in the bleachers, reading a book, she secretly glances at Hyuck playing soccer on the field and their eyes meet (because his eyes always find her). Mentally and physically better, she timidly smiles at him and he immediately leaves the field, not caring that he has a game to play and runs to her spot.
“Hey.”
“Hey, Hyuck.”
“It’s--” Hyuck clears his throat, anxiety makes his voice crack a little bit under pressure. “It’s been a while, how are you?”
“Better. Sorry I’ve been avoiding you these last few months.”
Hyuck looks like he’s about to break apart. He misses her, has been missing her so badly every single day, and just having her smile back at him almost in the way she used to shake him to his bones. “It’s okay. Do you... have time to talk?”
She closes her book. “Over some coffee? Sure.”
He doesn’t take her hand, and she doesn’t search for his, not yet, but the little scar that connects them feel warm on their skins.

Souls ties - Part 3 (Bucky Barnes au)
"I had all and then most of you
Some and now none of you
Take me back to the night we met"
Tumblr media
The sun had set a while ago and the band had been replaced by speakers, meaning the party was coming to an end, even though you still hadn't properly talked to Bucky. You  knew you probably should've payed more attention to your own husband but Darren seemed to enjoy himself more around his college friends. It would've driven you mad, had it been a regular party. Oddly enough, his behaviour that night didn't bother you as much as it should've. One might say your attention was elsewhere. It was late, and you were thirsty for water after all the champagne and hors-d'oeuvres you'd had. You were positive your rosy cheeks attested for it. At the bar, you took a minute for yourself and sat down, taking this occasion to relieve your feet from your high-heel shoes. The night's fresh air made the hair on your neck stand on end and your body's instinct was to shiver, even though the weather was still quite nice. Your body tensed up as you felt a presence at your side.
"Feeling a little tired there?" he asked. You were starting to know this voice now, and it was like music to your ears.
"I needed to be away from the crowd for a moment," you confessed.
"Oh, I can leave if you want."
This made you look at him instantly. "No, stay." You realised how pressing you must've sound and chuckled at his confused eyes – which had a beautiful shade of blue in the moonlight. "I mean...I didn't want to get away  from you, specifically. Sorry if it sounded that way."
"I'd get it, you know," Bucky said. "What happened earlier..."
"...was disturbing for us both, I assume."
Bucky didn't say anything about you interrupting him. It felt natural, actually, almost like finishing his sentence rather than rudely stopping him mid-speech.  "Yeah, exactly," he continued. "I'm really sorry if that caused you...any pain or something."
"What? The coffee?" you asked naïvely. "Don't worry, it wasn't that hot," you said with a wink.
A faint smile appeared on Bucky's lips, making you notice both how he hadn't smiled much until then and that it lightened up his face in a touching way.
"I meant pain as in fear, or anxiety. Your wedding mustn't be the place you expected to hear those words." He looked you in the eyes and you  shivered once more. "Are you cold?"
You shook your head no before looking down to your knees. His eyes on you were making you  feel all sorts of ways you wouldn't dream of sharing with anyone. "No, I'm not," you said. Taking a careful breath in, you decided to glance at him. Your eyes paused at the same time as your lungs, taken away by the beauty of the man's face. Something behind his blue iris was beyond description and drove you even more eager to get to know him, his story, his passions and pet-peeves, his everything. He'd seemed to have stopped breathing for a second as well, but you weren't entirely sure it hadn't been a figment of your imagination.
"Maybe we should go back to the others," you whispered. You tried getting off your stool and slipped next to your shoe. Bucky moved fast to grab you with his arm and prevent you from hitting the ground. His grip was firm –  exaggeratedly firm. You brushed off the sensation of his leather glove on your back and thanked him hastily before going back to Steve.
"Are you okay?" he asked, lowering his voice.
"Yeah, sure." You knew he wasn't fooled by your answer ; Steve knew you better than you knew yourself. Bucky stayed silent for a while after that, and neither of you seemed to fathom what to do next.
---
"Ready to go, honey?"
You opened surprised eyes at Darren's question. It was barely past midnight.
"Darren, we can't leave before the other guests, c'mon..."
Your husband looked disappointed and now that most of your shock had gone away, his attitude was slowly driving you mad, especially when you gave deeper thought to his actions and words throughout the day.
"Do you even want to be here at all?" you asked him, somewhat dryly.
"Calm down, y/n. We've been here forever and I wanna rest for the night. Is that too much to ask?"
"Resting on your wedding night? Yeah,  that's a lot to ask for," you replied. "I thought we were going to party until the end and have fun with our friends before going home. Consensual marriage is supposed to be celebrated, don't you know that? Ugh, you really are a buzzkill sometimes."
"Wow, easy there. If you want to stay,  fine. But I'm going home."
"Are you serious right now?" Your stomach was burning with anger and disappointment. You loved Darren, but this kind of behaviour had become a habit of his. "You're going to leave me alone at our wedding party?"
"You're not alone, you have Steve and Wanda and...whoever that guy is over there. Enjoy the rest of your night."
"Damn it, Darren, that's not fair!"
Wanda's eyes turning towards you made you realise how loud your voices had been and you lowered yours a notch.
"Fine, go home. But don't expect me to be all smiles when I join you, if I even do."
Upon those words, you turned around and walked away from him. You were perfectly aware that there was no point in reasoning with him at this point. You ended up going back to your group and were surprised to see that Steve and Wanda had walked away as well, leaving Bucky alone.
"Where are they  going?" you asked, still angry from what'd just happened.
"They're grabbing more drinks. Wanda said she'd choose something for you since you were...busy."
You brought your hand to your forehead, ashamed that he'd heard you losing your temper.
"Sorry about that. He's just...difficult, sometimes."
"I saw that," he said with his hands in his pockets, "and no need to be sorry." You could see him take a deep breath in before he kept talking, even  though he was trying hard to look as calm and composed as possible. "Come, let's take a walk. It'll help you blow off some steam."
You followed Bucky through the garden and as you drifted away from the crowd, hearing less and less voices, a soothing feeling filled your body and mind. You took deep breaths in and deep breaths out, taking in the bucolic smell of the close-by forest. The only thing left bothering you were your shoes, and you made the call to take them off, leaning on Bucky's shoulder without even thinking about it. He stopped to let you do it.
"Here, let me hold them." He gently grabbed your shoes by the heels and carried them for the way.
"Thank you." You took a peek at him and smiled. "How did you know a walk would calm me down?"
"I...I  just did," he answered with a shrug. "Did it work?"
"It's starting to." You smiled at him ingenuously, taking in some of his features at the same time. The slight crook of his nose, the rebellious hair on his neck...  A question was burning your lips. It was just the two of you, so you might as well just ask. "Did you ever give much thought to what your tattoo said?"
He didn't seem taken aback by your question. At least you didn't think he was, even though his emotions were hard to read.
"Not really. I just assumed someone would pay me a compliment out of the blue  and confuse the hell out of me." He chuckled for the first time since you'd met him and you got a feeling that didn't happen often. He stopped quickly, as would a kid caught red-handed. "You?"
"I had lots of scenarios in my head. Someone bumping into me, stepping on my feet or even running me over with a car...I mean, that sentence could've been said at many occasions, really."
"It's true, though I don't think saying 'shit, I'm sorry' would be an appropriate apology after running somebody over with a car."
You laughed at his remark and nodded in agreement.
"True. It is only an appropriate apology for spilling coffee all over someone," you teased.
You couldn't even hear the music the speakers were playing anymore, only the insects buzzing and leaves brushing against each other. As you walked, you got dangerously closer to Bucky. You knew what your body was doing, where your legs were taking you, but you had no idea why  they were doing it. You shouldn't have been standing so close to him, especially on your wedding night. Your hand accidentally brushed against his leather glove and he moved away. His movement wasn't big enough to call it an act of repulsion, but you also didn't know why exactly he didn't want to be close to you.
"I'm sorry," you said. "I just..."
"...want to be close. I know." He sighed and stopped walking. "It's a weird feeling and I didn't think you...I thought you weren't feeling it."
"What? The feeling that draws me to you and that I can't control? Of course I feel that. I've...I've met you hours ago, and yet..."
"You feel a connection that dates to much longer than that," he finished.
"Exactly. I couldn't really put words on it but...yeah. That's what it feels like."
"I'm sorry," he said. "Steve wanted me to come here for some reason and I..."
"Don't say you shouldn't have come, please."
He looked back at you and saw you'd been staring at your feet saying that sentence. His face changed in an instant.
"I didn't mean to hurt you. Not at all, actually... If I hadn't been there tonight, you might have actually enjoyed your wedding."
"I did enjoy it," you replied in a hurry. "Just not the way I imagined." You stared into his eyes,  trying to understand what he was feeling in this very moment. "We'll see each other again, right?"
"That might not be a good idea, as much as I would want to."
"But...as my sister always tells me, soulmates don't have to be romantic. I can be happily married and still get to know you....can I?"
He tightened his lips, thinking about his answer. His face gave you no clue as to what he truly wanted, but the answer he gave you might have been an indication.
"You can try. I can try."

Part 3 is where I chose to start the fluff haha! I hope you enjoyed this part. It felt quite cute writing it, so I hope the final result is :)

luke patterson x fem!reader
a/n: saw this post by @deadpoolgirl23 and felt like i had to write this.this is set a few years after they played the orpheum and ‘ened up being huge’ so it’s set in the late 90s. disclaimer; this pretty much shows the boys(alex, reggie, bobby) in a negative light to match the song’s theme.
warnings: negativity from loved ones/not getting support from them. angsty fuff?
word count:1k
Tumblr media
Everyone. All their friends, all their family said it was wrong.
You shouldn't date a rock star. They aren't loyal. I mean, do you really know what he is doing every night when he is on tour? Don't you wanna have a normal relationship? you could hear your parents' voice as if they were right beside you.
Are you sure you need a girlfriend, right now? Why not focus on touring and making more albums? I don't think the female fans would like that you have someone. Luke could hear his manager's voice as if he was right beside him.
Luke grabbed his notebook and scribbled the lyrics that came to him a few seconds ago.
People say we shouldn't be together, too young to know about forever
But I say they don't know what they're talk, talk, talkin' about
You move next to your boyfriend's side and put a cup of coffee next to his notebook but didn't look at what he was writing. You don't like looking at his lyrics without his permission.
"You were up early." you stated, sitting next to him at the kitchen table. "You couldn't sleep?"
As he only noticed you right now he smiles at you.
"I had this idea for a song in my head. It’s about us." he grabs the mug and lifts it to his lips. "Thank you, baby."
Your lips curl into a smile and you nod instead of saying ‘you are welcome’.
Luke has been sleeping at your place for about two weeks now. He had some sort of argument with the boys and he decided to temporarily move away from their shared home. You know he is hurt. His friends don't disapprove of you. You know how the boys mean everything to him, you can only imagine how it hurts for him to know that his family is not supporting him. After Reggie’s fiasco with an obsessed fangirl-girlfriend they didn’t think it was a great idea for Luke to date you. You don’t see how you liking their music is a bad thing, and Luke doesn’t see it either. He knows you wouldn’t do anything to hurt him. But his friends don’t know it. No matter how close they are, how they think of each other as brothers, as family, they just think Luke is being stubborn and stupid.
But Luke knows that you are his end game. His soulmate if you will. He never met such a genuine person in his entire life. As soon as he landed his eyes on you he felt this indescribable connection. Why would he let go of you just because you were a fan? Is it such a huge problem that you love and support his passion for music?
Cause this love is only getting stronger
So I don't wanna wait any longer
I just wanna tell the world that you're mine girl
Luke didn’t even notice his hand picking up the pen and writing again. His other hand put down his coffee and started drumming a melody.
You got up before he could say or do anything. You didn’t need words. You never felt like you needed them. Both of you could understand each other from day one without them. It kept surprising both of you but by now, as 3 months has passed since the beginning of your relationship, you were kind of used to it. So when you got up to get Luke his acoustic he wasn’t surprised at all to find it next to him when he tried to get up and grab it.
They don't know about the things we do
They don't know about the "I love yous"
But I bet you if they only knew
They would just be jealous of us,
Your family keeps going on that you should date someone with a normal life, a normal job. No matter how many times you explained how much you love Luke they just wouldn't believe you. Thinking you are too young and naive to know what real love is. Your friends think Luke is only using you to pass time and when he gets bored with you he will just simply throw you away. You never doubted Luke. You know, you feel, he loves you. Just like him, you felt that way since the very beginning. And that feeling only got stronger since then. You were both hurt by the people that were supposed to believe in you, to love you unconditionally but that only made your connection to each other stronger.
In these three months you felt like you lived more than you did in your whole life. You did crazy, spontaneous and adventurous things that you normally would never have but you have no regrets. Every second you spend together is better than the last one, even if you feel like nothing can top Luke’s crazy date ideas.
The first time you said I Love You to each other was when he took you up to the Hollywood sign in the middle of the night just so you could watch the sunrise later together. He climbed up on the letter H and shouted “Y/N Y/L/N I am so in love with you,I didn’t think it was possible to feel this much love” into the night. He didn’t need to say it. You felt the same way. But you copied his action and climbed up next to him before reassuring him that you very much feel the exact same way.
You thought this kind of love only exists in romantic novels and movies. Yet here you were in this dream-like relationship.
They don't know about the up all nights
They don't know I've waited all my life
Just to find a love that feels this right
Luke started to play a soft tune on his guitar and you hummed along. He met your gaze and grinned at you. He doesn’t know how he got this lucky. What are the chances that he met you that day? You two could have easily avoided each other in the crowd. But you didn’t, proving the invisible connection you two had.
Just one touch and I was a believer
Every kiss it gets a little sweeter
It's getting better
Keeps getting better all the time girl
After your first date he walked you home. The two of you were in a heated conversation when you arrived to your home. Neither one of you wanted the night to end so you kept talking outside your front door. But you can only stand there talking about Nirvana for so long. You stood there in silence until you  went and grabbed his hand. You ran a finger up his bare arm. He looked at you, speechless, suddenly forgetting how to breath too. You look at him, questioningly pulling up an eyebrow. He leaned and kissed you.It was like a lightning, the electricity striking both of you as your lips connected for the first time.
Thinking back to that day Luke puts down the guitar now to pull you in for a kiss. Every kiss is better than the last one. Every damn one and he does not get how it’s possible. He reaches to cup your face to pull you closer, to deepen the kiss. Your hands find their way to his hair, which he decided to grow out and you start to play with a few stray locks. He lets out a quiet moan which is muted by the kiss. You only stop when you need to catch your breath. With foreheads pressed together you look into his deep green eyes. And you say I love you, wordlessly, without opening your mouth and in his eyes you can see as he says the words right back.
They don't know how special you are
They don't know what you've done to my heart
They can say anything they want 'cause they don't know about us

"Boo, Choi, you're up."
A fist pounds against their heavy, already open door and Seungkwan nearly topples out of his bunk at the sudden, aggressive call of his last name. He should be used to it by now, but it still sounds so foreign to him.
"Where to, sir?" Vernon inquires, already lacing his boots with a calm that is miles away from what Seungkwan is feeling.
"Busan," the Marshal states, and Vernon can hear his roommate suck in a breath. His fingers still for a moment, taking in the information. He and Seungkwan have both been dreading and longing for this moment, both missing their home base with every passing minute. They're finally going home, albeit he wishes the circumstances were different.
Seungkwan and Vernon have been at the Nagasaki Shatterdome for years now. The Jaeger program had seen the light of day in 2014, when they were a mere 16 years old. As soon as they turned 18, they'd signed up for the Defense Corps. The idea of helping to save the world on such a large scale had thrilled them. They were young and full of fire. And it would definitely win them cool-points.
Neither of them had ever expected to actually pilot a Jaeger though, yet here they were.
Vernon attempts to suppress a grin as he dons his armour but stops trying when he sees it mirrored on Seungkwan's face. They lock eyes for a moment, silence settling between them as they bask in the pre-combat jitters that always leave the room feeling somewhat charged. Like all that was needed right now was a tiny spark to set their soul on fire in the best possible way.
Seungkwan adjusts the shirt under his chest piece and chews at his cheek. He could never decide on his favourite part of battle—the actual fight and inevitably defeating the Kaijus - enormous alien beasts with neon acid for blood, or drifting with Vernon to be able to do it.
It's pointless anyway, he guesses, as the two are firmly entwined.
The first time Vernon and Seungkwan drifted, he threw up. The experience of Vernon's entire being fusing with his had been too much for his body to withstand. Seungkwan shivers at the memory, checking his gear one final time before jogging to catch up with his partner and the Marshall already heading up to the Jaeger station.
The Jaegers have to be operated by two (or more) pilots as they neurally connect into the interface of the machine. It requires a strong mental and physical bond between pilots and Jaeger, and can only come to fruition if both pilots are on the exact same wavelength, moving and thinking as one.
Through the neural bridge (known as The Drift), Seungkwan has felt Vernon's deepest fears, his greatest desires, and seen his most precious memories. And inevitably, vice versa. He'd feel slightly embarrassed about it all if not for the fact that he'd known Vernon since they were 5 and nothing about what they'd shared on their first drift had been new information to him.
He was still getting used to it, though. Sharing mind and body with his best friend. Like scientifically engineered soulmates.
He wasn't going to lie—the Drift itself was exhausting, but at the same time exhilarating. He never felt more alive than when his soul connected with Vernon's, bodies in sync and heart on his sleeve. There was no place to hide in the Drift. It was both extremely vulnerable and incredibly empowering.
When they reach the station, their Nova Hyperion is already whirring with power. The metal monstrosity looms over them, standing at 250 feet tall, and the core is radiating a bright orange light that bounces off the bulletproof window in front of them. The sight never fails to send a rush of adrenaline through their veins, like an electric current shooting up their spine to kick them into gear. Seungkwan inhales, an incredulous chuckle escaping him at the thought of two tiny humans making the giant robot move with their minds. Every time he's about to board the Jaeger, the idea seems all the more ridiculous to him.
"What are we up against this time?" Vernon asks as he walks up to the control booth where Xu Minghao is fervently pressing button after button. His eyes are glued to the radar in front of him, a red blip appearing in and out of vision. "Category 4. There's only one but it's going to give you a run for your money," he notes, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose with a slender finger. "Wonwoo thinks there may be more on the way," he continues and nods in the direction of a man bent over a map, racking his hand through his already messy hair.
"I could be wrong," Wonwoo states as Seungkwan approaches the table, "but I rarely am, so we're dropping off three additional Jaegers to back you up."
"Three?" Seungkwan is almost insulted at the lack of faith their team seems to have in them. Wonwoo gives him a look.
"Don't get cocky. Cocky gets you killed."
Seungkwan repays the warning with a fake smile and a repeated nod. "Better safe than dead, I guess," he says, mimicking Wonwoo's cautionary tone. The elder doesn't smile back.
"The Swedes will back you up," he continues as if Seungkwan never spoke, "and so will the Silva sisters, and Trohman and Barker." Vernon crinkles his nose at the latter, wanting to comment but swallowing his words as he notices Wonwoo glaring at him across the table.
Minghao comes up behind his superior and kneads at his tensed shoulders. "Relax, they've got this," he states, half reassuring Wonwoo but mostly himself. Minghao is great at putting up a cool front, even with his heart hammering against his chest in an uneven rhythm - which he feels kind of stupid for because it's not like he's the one putting his life on the line - but he'd be lying if he said every moment Seungkwan and Vernon boarded that Jaeger didn't fill him with dread, not knowing if his colleague's (his friends) would make it out alive.
"Yeah, we got this!" Seungkwan beams, his fingers curling into a fist in front of his chest. "We've got home turf advantage, a little South Korean magic in the air to lift our spirits."
"You'll be fighting in water," Wonwoo feebly reminds him but straightens his back nonetheless, swiping the table to pull up the now holographic map being projected into thin air. "We'll drop you here," he points, 30 miles off the shore of Busan. "Not ideal since it's still too close to the city to my liking but I don't want to expose you to too much water pressure."
Seungkwan nods as Vernon approaches the table, pulling on his gloves. "Does it have a name?"
Minghao blinks, taking a moment before realising Vernon meant the Kaiju. He purses his lips, thinking fast. "Stentax," he decides, remembering that Vernon likes to put a name to his opponent. It ups the stakes for him, making it more personal. As if defending his home country wasn't incentive enough to obliterate it.
"Great. Are you ready?"
Seungkwan tears his eyes away from the map and realises Vernon's addressing him. "Uh, yeah," he says, glancing at Minghao who's positioned himself back behind the controller. A second red blip appears on the radar, moving unsteady but fast—just like Wonwoo predicted.
He can hear his blood rushing in his ears, faintly registering Minghao confirming The Breach has spewed a second Kaiju— a category 3 this time. Seungkwan locks his jaw, his features hard under the orange glow of his Jaeger's core.
"Ready as ever."
At this, Vernon smirks. "Let's go."

I Know the Stars Will Start to Fade
AO3 @tsshipmonth2020
Masterpost- Previous- Next
Summary-  Roman was born with three soul marks but now has only one. He doesn't want to ruin his last great chance for happiness but finds his final soulmate, Logan, isn't what he expected. And neither is he what he expected of himself.
Day 10 LAMP (Platonic Logince focused, Romantic Moxiety)- Soulmates are born with matching soul marks
Roman was starting to feel desperate. He had been born with three different soul marks but now was left with one. He really couldn't blame Patton or Virgil for getting upset with him. Somehow this was his fault.
The soul marks had been beautiful. Three shields with different intricate patterns inside. One had a castle overshadowed by a storm cloud. That one had matched Virgil’s. One had a heart floating in a broiling sea. That one had matched with Patton's. The last showed a brain at the foot of the mountains with a field of stars above. He hoped whoever this brain matched to would be the one who lasted and stuck around.
He'd met Virgil on an online forum for people with multiple soul marks. They hadn't talked much but Virgil went by st0rmcl0ud online and had described a soul mark that sounded remarkably similar to Roman’s. So he reached out in DMs and they swapped photos of their marks and then phone numbers and at Roman's insistence planned to meet up. He was already head over heels for his soulmate and giddy with excitement to meet Virgil in real life. Virgil and Patton had found each other through a dating app. Virgil recognized the heart shield as matching one of Patton's marks and had introduced the two of them as well.
For the first month, it was wonderful. Roman had never been so enamored, so certain of a future together with these two. It felt wonderful and nerve-wracking and exciting and passionate and everything the fairy tales had promised love would be.
They went on dates and got to know each other better. Roman went from infatuated to admiring his soulmates. He still put forth the full effort to love them but his heart wasn't behind it the way it should have been.
The stormy castle started to fade. He loved- no- cared for his two soulmates deeply. But the mark started to fade. Roman’s grand romantic vision of the future started to settle into something more friendly and domestic. He hid his soul marks, not wanting to upset either of them.
The stormy castle faded completely and the heart in the ocean was beginning to dull in color as well. Roman loved going on dates because it made his friends happy, but he felt no happier than if they had a quiet movie night at home together or spent the night video calling each other.
Roman had been frustrated, because Virgil and Patton were still head over heels for each other, in their own ways of course. Why didn't he feel that romantic spark that had pulled them all together?
One day, the heart in the ocean faded completely. Roman was terrified to tell his soulmates that the marks were gone. He was even more frightened by the realization that he didn't really love them the way they loved him and each other. He absolutely cared for Patton and Virgil with his whole heart, but the romantic vision was gone. He wanted them in his life but the idea of dating twisted his gut in the most unpleasant way.
Virgil noticed first. Roman didn't think it was possible to see the man any paler than his normal complexion.
"You lied to us…"
"No, they disappeared. They were there. They were real!"
"How do you expect me to believe that, Roman," Virgil's eyes were clouded with fear and pain. Roman couldn’t meet his gaze any longer and looked away.
"Why would you-"
"I don't know! I- you're my soulmate, Virgil… I don't know why our mark disappeared."
Virgil shook his head and pulled out his phone, dialing from memory.
If Virgil's anger had been difficult, Patton's disappointment was worse. His sad eyes bore into Roman’s soul and he couldn't even soften the blow by blaming Roman.
"Roman, do you not want us?" Roman's heart crumbled at the question.
"Patton, of course, I-"
"He was never our soulmate, Pat! I don't know how but he lied to us," Virgil hissed, pulling Patton back away from Roman.
"Guys, please listen to me," Roman was on the verge of tears.
"Yeah, Virge. I'm sure there's an explanation here that we aren't seeing. Roman, you still love us, right?"
Roman couldn’t help it. He balked and that sealed his fate. The moment Patton's heart broke was embedded in his memory, unlike the disappearing soul marks.
That was a week ago. And here he was, riding the bus to rehearsal as though his emotions weren't in shambles, one chance left to find happiness.
"Excuse me, sir? May I see your soul mark?" Roman turned to the unfamiliar voice and saw the hottest man he'd ever met giving him a difficult to decipher look.
Roman already had names picked out for the dogs they would adopt together.
"Ah, sure," Roman held out his arm and the stranger leaned down to inspect it. After a moment he pulled the sleeve of his jacket up and held up an arm with three familiar marks up to Roman's, "it's you! The brain…"
The stranger cleared his throat and pushed his sleeve back down, "yes. It appears we are soulmates. My name is Logan Crawford. What is yours?"
"Roman Prince," Roman replied breathlessly. He felt like he was on cloud nine and had his final chance.
"Well, Roman, I suppose you'll want to be in contact. Although, I must warn you that I am a disappointing soulmate and refuse date," Logan had pulled out his phone and was handing it to Roman.
"What do you mean 'disappointing'?" Roman frowned more in confusion than any negative feeling for Logan.
"I suppose you'll find out anyway. I am romance-repulsed. Even as one of my soulmates I won't date you or the others. Most everyone tells me that I will be a disappointment for you three but frankly, I know my boundaries and refuse to change them."
Roman stared at his final soulmate. He hadn't expected this. He took the offered phone and plugged in his number, taking a quick selfie for the contact photo.
"Well then, Logan, let's agree to just talk. Have you met Patton or Virgil?" Roman was met with an indifferent look that lacked any recognition.
"No, I have not. Have you?"
"Yes and I don't think you'd like them…" Roman said bitterly.
"Do you think I dislike you, Roman?" Logan said with the most emotion Roman had heard from him yet.
"No, I didn't mean that," Roman stammered, "I- I just meant that they're… very romantic. And I thought I had 'hopeless romantic' cornered!" Roman laughed to hide his discomfort.
"Wait, but you only had one soul mark. How did you meet them?" Logan asked with curiosity.
"My stop is coming up, perhaps we save the tragic backstory for another time?" Roman grinned as the bus rolled to a stop a block from the theater, "call me!" He rushed off the bus before Logan could respond, bewildered by the chance meeting with the handsome stranger.
Over the next few weeks, Roman and Logan texted and met up for coffee a few times. Roman was terrified of pushing things too fast and watched the soul mark on his arm constantly for any sign that it was fading. Logan never asked about the other two soulmates so Roman decided to not talk about them. He was still hurt but they had to be happier without him.
"So, Roman, you never told me the tragic story of how you met Patton and Virgil," Roman nearly spit out his tea.
"Do you really want to know, dear?" Logan bristled at the nickname but nodded.
"Well," Roman recounted the events of how they met and started seeing each other almost casually. He slowed down as he got to the part where the soul marks started fading. Logan encouraged him to continue but he couldn’t bring himself to say it out loud.
"Roman, did they hurt you?"
Roman shook his head no, not meeting Logan’s eyes.
"Can you tell me what happened?" Logan asked gently, resting his hand on Roman’s across the cafe table. Roman felt a metaphorical shock at the physical contact. He wanted a romantic connection with Logan so badly sometimes that the other’s staunch refusal to date felt like an arrow to the heart.
"My soul marks disappeared," Roman whispered, "and I couldn't promise them I was still in love, so they left."
"Disappeared? How unusual. Did they match before disappearing?" Roman looked up, surprised by the reaction. Logan just opened a new tab on his laptop and started searching a few keywords, "what? You know I don't care for sentiment. But soul marks that aren't permanent is a fascinating concept. And you say you fell out of love when the marks disappeared? Was it sudden overnight?"
"N-no… actually the marks- and the feelings- faded over time. About a week, really," Roman sighed, "actually, Logan I need to confess-" Roman pulled up the sleeve of his jacket to reveal his last soul mark, "-yours started fading a few days ago. The colors aren't as saturated as before."
Logan looked down at the mark, "and how do you feel about me? Regardless of my stance on the matter."
Roman sucked in a long breath, "I…. Honestly, I've been in love with you from that day on the bus. But I respect your boundaries and I wasn’t going to push it and as we have been talking and getting to know each other, I really value you as a friend as well. I'm still a little hopelessly over the moon about you but it's not like when we first met."
"Fascinating, it seems the intensity of your soul mark is directly proportionate to your capacity for romantic attraction. One moment," Logan turned back to the laptop and after a moment turned the screen to face Roman, "does this sound like you?"
The word and definition almost popped off the screen at Roman. Frayromantic - an aromantic spectrum identity where one feels an intense romantic attraction to strangers that fades as they get to know the person
"Yes…" Roman took a sip of tea to try and calm his swirling thoughts.
Logan turned the laptop back around and did another search. He read for a moment before reading aloud from the screen, "other frayromantics have experienced fading soul marks. Some say that the marks came back after they realized and recognized their identity or came to terms with their soulmate about it. Others never had the marks come back naturally but rather decided to get them recreated. Or they decided they didn't want the marks and carried on markless, with or without their soulmate."
"So I'm not broken, it's happened before? The marks could come back? It's not wrong to not love my soulmates romantically?" The questions spilled from Roman’s mouth before he could stop them.
"I'd actually prefer if you would hurry up and get over your crush on me, thanks," Logan said with a smirk.
Roman held back a snort of laughter. He was feeling immeasurably better.
Roman was glad he had kept Patton's phone number. After discussing it with Logan, he decided to reach back out, hoping Patton would be understanding and could encourage Virgil to be as well.
The phone rang and rang. Roman started to sweat. Logan was preoccupied with personal research but he offered a comforting hand on Roman’s shoulder. Roman was glad for his friend's support, the soul mark a faint but distinct outline anymore. It had never fully disappeared even as Roman’s crush had evaporated.
Roman was ready to give up when the line connected, "Roman?"
"Patton! Oh, thank the stars you picked up. Do you have time to talk? If not now, maybe we can meet up?" Roman grinned happily.
"Why? I thought we weren't… " Patton trailed off.
"Pat, two things. One, I figured out why the soul marks faded. Two, I found Logan. We can all know each other and work things out because despite what Virgil said, we are soulmates," Roman waited with bated breath for the response.
"Hold on a second- Virgil!" Patton pulled the phone away from his mouth as he called out. Logan squeezed Roman’s shoulder to comfort him.
"Yeah, Pops? What's up?" From what Roman could hear it sounded like Virgil had just woken up, at 3 in the afternoon. What followed was a muffled conversation from which Roman could only pick out a few words.
"Okay, Roman. Can you and Logan meet us for dinner tonight?" Patton asked brightly.
"Logan, how does dinner tonight sound?" Roman grinned as Logan nodded, "sounds great, Pat. Where do you want to meet?"
"You two should come on over here about 7, alright? Awesome, see you soon!" Patton ended the call, mind already bustling with plans to get ready for dinner.
"Roman, please don't try to speak for me tonight," Logan smiled nervously as Roman parked the car.
"Of course not. I know you can handle yourself," Roman replied.
"Yes, I just worry that you're going to try too hard to be what Patton and Virgil want, not who you are. I like you and respect you for who you are and they will too if they're smart. But in the all too likely case that you can't help trying to be a people pleaser, at least let me establish my own boundaries."
Roman gasped, "do you have so little faith in me?"
"Yes," Logan grinned and stepped out of the car. Roman started chuckling and both were smiling as the front door of the apartment duplex opened.
"Roman. And I guess that makes you Logan. Come on in, I guess," Virgil was as dour as ever as he showed them to the living room, "Patton says dinner should be ready in a few minutes so make yourselves at home."
"Virgil, it's so good to see you! I've missed your pale, crabby face," Roman grinned although Virgil did not seem amused.
Logan held out his hand, "it's nice to meet you, Virgil."
Virgil stared at the offered hand and poked it with his finger, "Nice to meet you too, Logan."
"Are they here? V, why didn't you tell me?" Patton came bustling from the kitchen and immediately wrapped Roman in a tight hug, "oh it's been too long! How ya doing, Prince?"
Roman grinned and hugged Patton back, "better now, that's for sure."
"Ah, and you must be Logan, come on in buddy!" Patton turned to offer Logan a hug.
"No, thank you. I'd rather not," Logan tried to wave Patton off.
"You sure?" Logan nodded, "Okay, dinner is almost done and we've got so much to talk about!"
Roman helped Virgil set the table while Logan followed Patton into the kitchen to help with the final preparations.
The conversation was light as they ate until Virgil asked the question no one else was bringing up.
"So Princey, why did the soul marks disappear?"
Roman took a deep breath. He could feel Logan’s hand on his knee under the table and was grateful for his soulmate’s support once again. "Virgil, Patton, I have discovered that I am frayromantic. I know that word doesn't make sense, but hear me out," he proceeded to explain, talking about how he had truly loved them when they met, and still wanted to care about them now. He even showed them the faded soul mark that matched Logan’s, explaining that it never faded completely because they had come to an understanding with each other about their relationship. He didn't bring up that the soul marks could come back, not wanting to give them undue hope or misguided ideas about his emotions. By the time he was done explaining, Patton was smiling with tears in his eyes and Virgil was nodding.
"Mark or not, I still want you in my life," Patton sniffed and reached across the table to take Roman’s hand, "we can work out the particulars later."
"Ah, Roman, I'm sorry. I was wrong to accuse you and I can't imagine how much that must have hurt you," Virgil spoke just above a whisper.
Roman nodded, "thank you, Virgil. I'll consider forgiving you."
"That's fair-"
"Consider it done!"
"Oh- kay thank you," Virgil chuckled.
"So Logan, why is tonight the first time we're meeting you?" Patton smiled at the stoic man.
"Simply put, I wasn’t seeking out my soulmates. I happened upon Roman by chance. I want to make it clear that I am not interested in dating any of you," Logan spoke with confidence. Roman was proud of him, returning the comforting hand on his knee gesture.
"Wait you two aren't dating?" Patton asked, confused.
"No. We are not dating. I am aromantic and romance-repulsed. I want nothing to do with mushy, complicated romantic emotions. However, and I hope Roman doesn't mind me saying this, I do consider him my best friend," Logan coughed, "and I actually wanted to talk with you later about a platonic partnership," Roman was surprised to hear this but more surprised by the blush on Logan's cheeks.
"Yeah, we can talk about that later, Lo. I definitely think you're my best friend as well."
"Wow, so… being soulmates isn't going to be easy for any of us," Virgil murmured.
"But we'll all work it out together!" Patton finished the sentiment, clasping his boyfriend's hand in his and smiling at the two soulmates across the table.
The soul marks that had faded completely never came back on their own. After a few years together, Roman decided to get them tattooed back on, asking the artist to match the intensity to Logan’s mark. The three faint marks helped reassure Roman that he was who he was and that he didn't need to change that to love his soulmates just as much as he could.
