Strengthening Plant Health

In a significant move on December 27, 2023, the Smithsonian Institution and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) have announced a strengthened partnership to safeguard U.S. plant health against invasive species. This collaboration is formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Dr. Kirk Johnson, Sant Director of the National Museum of Natural History, and Matthew Rhoads, APHIS Associate Deputy Administrator.   Advancing Scientific Knowledge and Protection The MoU underlines an expanding relationship between the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) and APHIS in areas such as exotic insect, seed, and plant identification, agricultural quarantine inspection, entomological and botanical curation, and more. This joint effort is instrumental in advancing the scientific community’s understanding and resource collection, particularly concerning exotic insect species, weed seeds, and other plant contaminants.   Mutual Benefits for Agriculture and Natural Resources Matthew Rhoads, associate deputy administrator for APHIS’ Plant Protection and Quarantine, emphasized the collaboration's importance in ensuring accurate pest species identification. This cooperation not only supports a robust agricultural economy but also safeguards natural resources. Moreover, it reinforces a shared commitment to pioneering science, benefiting both agencies, the nation, and the international scientific community.   Enhancing Collections and Research The MoU grants USDA entomologists and botanists laboratory space within the museum, and access to the Smithsonian's collections, and libraries. In return, these scientists will contribute their expertise to the curation and enhancement of these collections, which are among the world's finest and most comprehensive. Notably, the NMNH entomology collection boasts over 35 million specimens, while the United States National Herbarium houses more than five million plant specimens.   Focused on Agricultural Importance This strategic partnership will concentrate on identifying and providing information about arthropods and plants of agricultural significance. Simultaneously, it will offer scientific services to a broad range of researchers, stakeholders, and the public. Dr. Kirk Johnson expressed excitement about renewing the collaboration, and importantly, noted that this MoU lays the groundwork for conducting mutually beneficial scientific work. National Museum of Natural History is one of the most private exhibition halls in our nation. The structures was built as the Agriculture and Commerce Building in 1940. Philippine Biodiversity "Lolong" a huge grown-up male Indo-pacific crocodile. Lolong is the biggest crocodile that was ever gotten from the wild, having a complete lenght of 6.17 meters or ( 20 feet and 3 inches ) and weight of 1075 kilograms or ( 2370 establishes ).

• Philippine Eagle

"Philippine Eagle" otherwise called the Monkey-eating falcon is the biggest, most dominant and rarest of the surviving hawks of the world.

Преди няколко дни с вещицата Уини (главен персонаж в книгата "Ден на динозавъра" от изд.TIMELINES) събрахме компания (тя домашния си любимец, а аз децата и сестра ми), яхнахме метлите и посетихме Националния природонаучен музей.

Вещицата и черният ѝ котарак забъркаха голямо приключение. Уини толкова се ентусиазира да спечели един конкурс за рисунки на динозаври, който бяха организирали в музея, че реши да се върне в праисторическата ера и да види очи в очи създанията. Тя не само почерпи вдъхновение от прекия контакт с животните, но и реши да си прехвърли един трицератопс в нейното време и да го покани на чай в къщата си.

С децата и сестра ми се задържахме в двадесет и първи век. Разходката в музея беше много интересна и можеше да бъде и много по-приятна, ако не беше пришпорена от Кай. За съжаление той се превъзбуди от едни играчки, които видя в магазина за сувенири на входа и през цялото време бързаше, за да може на излизане евентуално да му се купи нещо. Укроти се и спря да разгледа подробно единствено витрините със стотици насекоми.

Националният природонаучен музей е чудесна опция за занимания в дъждовните или твърде горещите за външни разходки дни. Има много какво да се види и научи. Предлагат се и беседи с експерти (по предварителна заявка), които ми се струват страхотна опция за достатъчно любопитните и търпеливи деца.

Книгата "Ден на динозавъра" е част от поредицата за Уини и Уилбър от Валъри Томас и Корки Пол. Надявам се издателство TIMELINES скоро да ни изненада с още от приключенията на вещицата с румен нос и шантавата ѝ котка, защото са жестоки! <3

This is the roof of The National Museum of Natural History located in Luneta Park, Manila, Philippines Originally designed by a Filipino architech, Antonio Toledo in the 1930s. One of things that I like the most in this museum is the building itself.
