My very last comic for The Nib! End of an era! Transcription below the cut. instagram / patreon / portfolio / etsy / my book / redbubble
The first event I went to with GENDER QUEER was in NYC in 2019 at the Javits Center.
So many of the people who came to my signing were librarians, and so many of them said the same thing: "I know exactly who I want to give this to!" Maia: "Thank you for helping readers find my book!" While working on the book, I was genuinely unsure if anyone outside of my family and close friends would read it. But the early support of librarians and two American Library Association awards helped sell two print runs in first year.
Since then, GENDER QUEER been published in 8 languages, with more on the way: Spanish, Czech, Polish, French, Italian, Norwegian, Portugese and Dutch.
It has also been the most banned book in the United States for the past two years. The American Library Association has tracked an astronomical increase in book challenges over the past few years. Most of these challenges are to books with diverse characters and LGBTQ themes. These challenges are coming unevenly across the US, in a pattern that mirrors the legislative attacks on LGBTQ people. The Brooklyn Public Library offered free eCards to anyone in the US aged 13-21, in an effort to make banned books more available to young readers. A teacher in Norman, Oklahoma gave her students the QR code for the free eCard and lost her job. Summer Boismeir is now working for the Brooklyn Public Library. Hoopla and Libby/Overdrive, apps used to access digital library books, are now banned in Mississippi to anyone under 18. Some libraries won’t allow anyone under 18 to get any kind of library card without parental permission. When librarians in Jamestown, Michigan refused to remove GENDER QUEER and several other books, the citizens of the town voted down the library’s funding in the fall 2022 election. Without funding, the library is due to close in mid-2024. My first event since covid hit was the American Library Association conference in June 2022 in Washington, DC. Once again, the librarians in my signing line all had similar stories for me: “Your book was challenged in our district" "It was returned to the shelf!" "It was removed from the shelf..." "It was moved to the adult section."
Over and over I said: "Thank you. Thank you for working so hard to keep my book in your library. I’m sorry you had to defend it, but thank you for trying, even if it didn't work." We are at a crossroads of freedom of speech and censorship. The future of libraries, both publicly funded and in schools, are at stake. This is massively impacting the daily lives of librarians, teachers, students, booksellers, and authors around the country. In May 2023, I read an article from the Washington Post analyzing nearly 1000 of the book challenges from the 2021-2022 school year. I was literally on route to a festival to talk about book bans when I read a startling statistic. 60% of the 1000 book challenges were submitted by just 11 people. One man alone was responsible for 92 challenges. These 11 people seem to have made submitting copy-cat book challenges their full-time hobby and their opinions are having an outsized ripple effect across the nation. WE NEED TO MAKE THE VOICES SUPPORTING DIVERSE BOOKS AND OPPOSING BOOK BANS EVEN LOUDER. If you are able too, show up for your library and school board meetings when book challenges are debated. Send supportive comments and emails about the Pride book display and Drag Queen story hours. If you see a display you like– for Banned Book Week, AAPI Month, Black History Month, Disability Awareness Month, Jewish holidays, Trans Day of Remembrance– compliment a librarian! Make sure they feel the love stronger than the hate <3

I'm so confused what they think they'll win at the end of this Plant, William overnight inherited more money than they'll ever see in their lives. Charles is KING. Catherine is POW. The kids are being brought more into the fold. Camilla as QC hasn't gone as bad as I feared it would. The RF have survived her majesty's passing and Charles has literally shut the door on them ever being a part of royal life again (at this point I think even Harry is out for good) their kids didn't get titles they aren't global superstar rockstar philanthropic movie stars the next Gal Gadot brand ambassador billionaires they said they would be if this was a game of chess the RF can call checkmate.
Definitely. They are getting money for their tell-alls but it all erodes their brand.
But I don't think they care. At some point during the past year or so, they realized they weren't going to reach the level they thought they were, and that's when they decided they would go nuclear. My guess is that the shoe dropped when they weren't invited to Obama's birthday party.
Then the 40x40 stunt failed and their little NYC "tour" didn't "move the needle" the way they expected. Earlier that summer, Harry unveiled the Diana statue with Will and that didn't cause much of a stir.
I think Fall 2021 was when they realized they weren't going to get the recognition/attention they felt they deserved by doing charitable stuff. They decided to go nuclear at that point and filmed the most incendiary scenes of the Netflix documentary during the November 2021 NY visit.

(don’t fight me bc i know how you girls like to tussle)
Individualism is a facet of white supremacy and capitalism. Just bc you aren’t white or rich doesn’t mean that you are immune to the american exceptionalist individual mindset. Individualism is plaguing the American left, including so-called “leftists” of color
Americans, despite scrolling on twitter while driving or watching tv, havent developed the ability to handle more than one thing at a time.
This is an unacceptable position to hold as a leftist:
Tumblr media
Any leftist would know that unions are not the endgame. Unions are a mechanism to mitigate capitalist exploitation.
Unions don’t put the means of production into the hands of the workers. Unions are not the dictatorship of the proletariat. Unions are not inherently revolutionary.
But unions are a good entry point for understanding class warfare and class solidarity. They’re a place where people develop organizing skills and a site for socialization. A skillset necessary for “when the revolution comes”
There is no reason to believe that unions cannot liaison with disability and homeless groups. Some unions already liaison with such groups.
The quiet quitting/2 hour notice phenomenon from 2021 and this year’s hot labor summer are turning Americans onto unions. I think support for unions is at 32% now up from 19% in 2019.
Landlords keeping rent stabilized housing off the market + weak housing regulation + bs zoning laws + wage stagnation have exacerbated the housing crisis leading to an increase in homelessness. Making the fight for affordable housing and public housing more dire.
(Long) Covid has re-energized the disability movement.
All of these things are happening simultaneously. These are complex issues that affect people differently across this big ass fucked up country. it’s stupid to think that one organization or one type of organization can solve any one of these issues even on a local level.
But American disability pay is notoriously small and has infinite caveats so many disabled people have to work. Unions protect them. Unionized workplaces are safer more generally and unions can use their power to actually bring workplaces to be ADA complaint (or even more accessible)
Union workers are less likely to become homeless. workers in homeless shelters across the country are trying to unionize which will help them better service homeless people. And in NYC homeless people in Manhattan formed their own union to protect themselves from shit shelters.
Remediating the effects of capitalism is not a zero sum game. You can care about more than one thing at a time. Specializing in something doesn’t mean you’ve abandoned everything else.

This is something I have not had any luck googling, but since you know about The Wire and election stuff, I was wondering about season 4. The season begins with the kids on summer break. After school starts, the Democratic primary occurs, followed by the off-screen general election, I assume in November & Tommy is acting as the mayor before Christmas, and looking to get Chris's bodies out of the vacants before the New Year. Don't campaigns run longer than that? Aren't primaries in the spring?
So there are timelines that fans of the show have come up with.
Regarding the election, the show did not quite follow reality. In the show, the Baltimore mayoral election happens in 2006 - but back then, Baltimore's mayoral elections were held in off-years, which is a terrible policy but sadly common in regions where machine politics dominate.* So the mayoral primary was held in September 2007, and the general election was in November.
However, in the Wire universe, Baltimore had its mayoral primary on September 12th, 2006, and then the general election on October 25th, with Carcetti beginning his term on November 6th.
*By which I mean no disrespect to Baltimore: NYC, which is no stranger to machine politics, also has its elections on off-years, and the result has been very low turnout (and I would argue a lack of democratic accountability and representativeness). If you want to know why Eric Adams could get elected in 2021, no small part of it is due to the fact that only 23% of NYC's registered voters turned out for the primary and only 21% for the general. (Compare this to 26.7% in 2020 for the primary and 62% for the general.)

In other words, New York City — which in the first pandemic summer had been declared “dead forever” — was back! As long as you had not personally been ejected from your home, you might have even found it inspiring.
There was only one problem: None of it made any sense.
In late 2021 and early 2022, when demand for apartments was supposedly accelerating from trickle to geyser, New York was still besieged with COVID-related troubles. Return-to-office plans had been quashed by the Delta variant, then Omicron. Tourism was way down, and unemployment was twice the national rate. Crime was reportedly surging — people were getting shoved onto subway tracks — and outdoor dining had emboldened rats to live freely and openly among humans. Had all of the people who had presumably moved to escape these very concerns really come flooding back?
With every rise in the city’s median gross rents, my skepticism grew. I had lived happily in New York for more than two decades, through many disasters and rebounds, and I wanted to believe the story of its glorious post-COVID recovery. But why did it seem like all of the people telling it were also trying to lease me overpriced apartments?
I began to pick up faint dispatches from a distant, numbers-based reality, where a more plausible counternarrative was taking shape. “Manhattan Lost 6.9% of Its Population in 2021, the Most of Any Major U.S. County,” said a March 2022 headline. “NYC’s Population Plummeted During Peak COVID —  And It’s Still Likely Shrinking,” said another from a couple months later. According to these stories, New Yorkers hadn’t come flooding back at all. In fact, they were probably still leaking out.
If that was the case, then the city’s rental frenzy defied not just laws of supply and demand but also conservation of mass. All of the people who fled the city over the past three years should have left behind a surplus of empty, habitable apartments. What happened to them? And why is it so difficult and expensive to lease one now?

It came to my attention a little while ago that AAs have criticized my stance on Jensen's house purchase under the guise of "making fun of fan fiction". Included in the points these AAs were making pertaining my blog specifically was pertaining to how "buying a beautiful historic home was a poor choice". Yes, it was a poor choice not only from a spiritual standpoint but also for more logical, physical reasons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are multiple cemeteries within a 2 mile radius from this house. Maybe not close enough to be a big deal but given there are quite a few in this general area, depending on your set of beliefs this may or may not be a deal breaker.
A potentially big public health issue is there's a landfill not even 3 miles from the house. Some of the concerns with sanitary landfills include methane gas and leachate leakage, general habitat destruction at the landfill site, potential scent issues during summer months especially, more rodents, etc. While this might not be an "open air" type of landfill where garbage is not buried or otherwise separated from land outside of the said landfill, there are still potential health hazards associated with living within a 3 mile radius from a landfill. According to one cohort study spanning from 1996 to 2008 of about 250,000 people states that people who live within 3 miles from a landfill in central Italy were more likely to be admitted to a hospital or die with lung disease compared to those who lived further away from landfills. One of the biggest culprits with the reported health ailments higher in prevalence and incidence in these areas is hydrogen sulfide. While it's said that trash regulations are different from US regulations where this house is located and therefore some like that expert try to say this doesn't apply to the US, is it really that safe to live near a landfill (looking at you Love Canal)? Other studies conducted in the past which are mentioned in this paper listed on the EPA's website suggest there too are health hazards of living near landfills in the USA as well, not just Italy or even England. Point is, it may be debatable as to how "safe" it is living near any landfills let alone this one but it is nonetheless a factor one should consider when buying any home. Location, location, location as any real estate agent can tell you...
According to the Home Details per Zillow, this house has depreciated greatly over the years. Back in 2001 this house sold for $48.9 million dollars. This house was listed in September 2013 for $62 million dollars and removed April 2016. In August 2021 it was sold for $17.5 million, which is a good bit less from the $48.9 million it was previously bought for. Part of this property sold (separated into 7 separate lots, as it was once a 20 acre property) for $5 million back in May 2023 with another part of this property being listed for sale for $44.5 million. The portion of the property Jensen bought in July 2023 was purchased for $9.375 million and appears to be the main house on this property. Overall, the value of this house greatly depreciated over the years. It appears that in order to make this house actually sell the property had to be reduced in size to make it more affordable to buy. Chris Mark's property that's also for sale in Woodstock, CT property also shrunk in size. This particular house which is about an hour and 45 min Northeast from Jensen's CT property also greatly decreased in value. It seems that the decrease in number of acres included in the current price was a move done to make the house more affordable or in other words, so someone buys it. It was listed for sale in Oct 2022 for $50 million, down to $35 million in March 2023, $29.995 million in April 2023 and taken off the market in May 2023. However, the house returned to the market in July 2023 for $26 million, increased to $39 million in September 2023 and again removed early Oct 2023. The Chris Mark mansion was listed yet again 2 days before Halloween for $29 million and is still on the market as of today, February 18, 2024.
4. I mentioned this before but some people in the past speculated the Ackles may intend on opening another brewery or even a B&B at this house. According to the zoning type for this property (AAA), they would not be allowed to open any manufacturing facility on this property (or really most any kind of business), nor would they be able to have a B&B on this property per current Fairfield city ordinances. Someone else about 4 miles from the Ackles' property over 10 years ago tried to get a law passed to allow for B&Bs in residential areas, which ultimately did not pass. This same house a woman wanted to turn into a bed and breakfast was sold a few years later.
Overall, the general rule seems to be that buying houses may not be the greatest investment when crunching the bottom line numbers but this is especially true with the larger houses. Given the Ackles' history of buying homes to renovate and then eventually sell, they most likely intend to sell this house at some point down the not too distant future. Given they also probably won't make this their forever home, the cost of the upkeep of this house compared to what they purchased this house for and ultimately sell it for probably will not churn out the profits they are hoping to gain by selling down the road. If the Ackles' had any intentions of using this house for anything other than as a personal residence (which was not listed on the real estate paperwork at the time of purchase back in July 2023), their plans would/will be foiled rather quickly.
I brought up the Chris Mark house as another case where McMansions just aren't a good investment. Not only is this house not a good choice for an investment as is the case for a family like the Ackles, the location of it is in my humble opinion not the greatest overall despite it being an affluent neighborhood due to some of the landmarks in this area.

Hi! I've been... kinda out of the fandom for YEARS. Do you have/know of a masterpost of what went on with Alex and Lisa for... the past two years, apparently?
Want to preface this with it was less Big Obvious things and much moreso IYKYK vibes of weird shit or most importantly, the lack of certain types of posts. An semi-hinged timeline of Summer 2020-October 2022:
2020
June
They start doing Crash Test Live and from the first episode Alex isn’t wearing his wedding ring. It gets talked about amongst fans a bit for months but with farm work it seems practical enough.
July
Lisa is posting him, seems normal!
By end of Summer/Augustish it’s becoming more noticeable Alex is consistently no longer wearing his ring on CTL or in zoom M&Gs.
October-November
Alex is in LA a lot.
December
Everything seems normal despite Alex's missing ring because he's home and Lisa is posting him.
He's home with Dorl and Steve for his birthday and it’s the last time we see him at the farm till April 2022. Lisa doesn't make a grid post but she posts. His birthday post for her is a little weird. Not huge red flag weird, but was absolutely something some of us noticed as being more over the top than usual.
Alex posts his social media hiatus. Something he's never done before but hey it's pandemic so everyone needs a break.
Lisa doesn't have any major Christmas or New Year's posts which is off brand but again, it's fucking pandemic so everyone is being weird, right?
2021
January
Alex posts that he's hiking with Danny who lives in LA. I don't have the posts or exact dates, but around this time, Lisa has posted about her Dad having some health issues and eventually having a quadruple bypass. And Alex seemingly is not home. Lisa never being overt has some interesting posts.
February
ATL plays Good Morning America and Lisa makes no acknowledgement. Valentine's Day comes and goes
February/March
Alex takes a ski/snowboard trip with Danny (we all forgot to archive stories) which is interesting because he and Lisa took trips to Park City so he’s doing things they would typically do together. Somewhere in this time Danny’s Caroline also sends her a bracelet or some sort of gift which seems interesting.
March
Alex still has not been back to the east coast, but takes another vacation with Rian, Steve, Rian's terrible new girlfriend and her Trump supporter friends at Rian's gf's family's Aspen mansion. They release Once in a Lifetime which is straight to the point! When it seems like Lisa won't post about it, she does! In the fucking weirdest of ways.
The next night, Alex posts and deletes a poem to and video with his horse. It’s confusing and we briefly think he’s back at the farm.
April
It’s their 5 year wedding anniversary but Lisa takes a conveniently timed social media hiatus and Alex doesn't post but he’s definitely back in LA and acting weird about his personal life in interviews.
June
Alex finally goes to the east coast and seems to be packing and/or rummaging at his parents, finding nostalgic shit.
July
Alex is confirmed at his parents.
Lisa hangs out with their mutual friends for 4th of July, clearly not wearing her ring and Alex gets weird. Later in the month, more questionable related shit.
The night of the first show ATL plays, Lisa posts about her bed.
August
Sad Summer starts and Alex is just happy to be on tour or?
ATL has a day off in NYC and Lisa goes to NYC. We still don’t know why?!?
Lisa is featured in a Baltimore Homes spread. There is no mention of a s/o in anyway but there is a picture of a shelf featuring a wedding photo, and ATL/Simple Creatures things.
September
About a week later, Lisa posts a video dancing in front of the shelf and it’s different. Later she posts directly about redecorating the shelf, void of all Alex relics.
Alex does an interview saying he lives in LA and when asked where he stays when he goes back to MD he starts with “Good question!” and lands on staying with his parents.
October
the allegations happen so Alex is even less present online than before, which is already limited. We’re still struggling.
November
It’s noticed Lisa has removed Alex posts from her “Fam” highlights on Instagram
December
Lisa posts “Good Riddance to 2021″ and notably ATL decor is missing.
2022
February
Lisa takes a trip to Mexico City and never mentions who she's with. One of their friends posts a comment about "him" that gets deleted. We assume she was seeing someone serious enough take a vacation with and that's all we ever gather about that. Ever.
March
Janelle makes the "boyfriend soft launch" post which features a picture of 2 glasses of wine she had previously posted in a story  only showing 1 glass, and a pic of her IN HIS T-SHIRT. There was never anything overt to prove they were together but there were LOTS of vibes and timings that never necessarily made sense to compile. I made this timeline on what I think is their precursor to the Lisex split but it’s all speculation.
April - Another wedding anniversary goes by wayside however!
THE WALL - Alex posts a some promo videos and for days it’s debated if they are recorded at the farmhouse. Reader, they are!
Lisa posts watching Batman which just feels telling.
May
Jack and Alex write “Sleepwalking” which seems to have big Missing Her vibes.
June/July
Speculation recap about some things. But includes Lisa posting a pic of Alex on her goat account.
September
one of Alex's aunts tags Lisa in a Facebook post about how lovely it was to see them (twice, to be specific) and Lisa responds that they are looking into a November trip to visit.
October
They are both at Post Malone in New Jersey
Their friends publicly post them together.
Hilariously, Lisa has not posted the new ATL song nor did she repost the tagged posts on her account. Alex virtually has no personal posts anymore but off brand for Lisa.

would you care to elaborate on getting a phd. I ask this mainly because I would like a recap of your time away from tumblr. your blog was one of my faves 😀😀
Let’s see…so I stopped posting in 2018 which was a big year for me. That’s right around the time I started dating my wife and also got an ADHD dx and finally started medicating both that and my anxiety. Both of which aren’t not reasons why I stopped posting here as much lol.
Once I was medicated and in therapy to work specifically on my ADHD and work related issues and also not super anxious all the time grad school got way more manageable. I made a lot of progress on my research and finally started to feel a bit less stuck.
It was still slow going though because of the nature of my research and also because it took time to get some forward momentum. And then COVID hit and we had a complete research shut down from mid-March to June 2020. I spent most of that time working on my dissertation, writing my intro chapters and analyzing data. Living in NYC during the height of the first COVID wave was definitely an experience lol.
In the summer of 2020 campus started to slowly open back up and we were able to get back in the lab on a limited basis. I also got engaged and we adopted our beautiful baby boy Charlie the Cat that summer.
Around that time I really started to push to try and get approval to defend. I did a two big experiments and things really started to come together. I defended in April 2021 and graduated in May. After that I postdoc’d in the same lab to finish my research and write a paper. My paper was finally published this fall!
We moved to Minnesota this spring and I worked remotely until October when I got my current job doing technical writing and data analysis for a clinical research organization. And I got married in October!
So yeah, that’s the highlight reel. Over the past four years I went from being a girl and her cat to being a girl and her wife and their two cats.

The Trial of Deus; How Peter and the Reader Meet
Tumblr media
“Seek not greatness, but seek truth and you will find both.” - Horace Mann
Tumblr media
⚖ Pairing: Mob!Peter Parker x BlackFemale!Reader
⚖ Setting: Mid-summer in Manhattan, NYC, New York
⚖ Warnings: Language, Adult Themes, Violence, Mentions of Murder
☆ A/N: Would you guys believe me if I told you I’ve been slow-roasting this idea for over a year? Yep, ever since I finished The Fall and Rise of Deus back in February 2021, my mind stayed fixated on where, how, and why the Reader and Peter met. It’s safe to say my writing process wishes it could match a sloth’s pace. But I made it, at long last! I love it, and I hope you all love it too.
♬ Song Inspo: Sinner & Saint by Beacon Light + Moiba Mustapha (produced by Tommee Profitt)
Tumblr media
Preface:
All eyes in the state of New York are glued to any and all screens broadcasting the mid-morning news. Every single person, regardless of age, class, ethnicity, and gender, watches with bated breath as the wearied news anchor takes off his glasses, rubs his eyes, heaves a sigh, then puts his glasses back on.
No one reads the bright red headline at the bottom of the screen. They won’t believe what they see, anyway. Not until they hear it.
The news anchor gathers up a second lungful of air and then exhales it in a crestfallen gust before lifting his solemn eyes to address the audience.
“I don’t know what to say, folks. Truly, I don’t. This is me going off the script here, because none of those words on the teleprompter will capture the magnitude... the gravity... the just, jarring sense of sorrow we are all feeling right now. Yes. Of that, I am utterly certain.”
Breaths choke up. Heads shake in disbelief. Sweaty palms chafe, pierced with fingernails. Mouths screw up, teeth clench, throats constrict, chins wobble. Unblinking eyes burn with the reddening brim of unshed tears.
“I regret to confirm, with the heaviest of hearts, that Manhattan’s most beloved humanitarian, Adrian Toomes, has been shot and killed in his home at around midnight last night. The uhm... suspect... is in custody.”
A dark look clouds over the news anchor’s face but he shakes his head, clears his throat and trundles on. “We’ve lost a hallmark in our community. One of the biggest advocates for workers’ rights. The biggest charity donor to our impoverished neighbors. Right before his untimely death, he even set up a 20 million dollar grant funding orphanages across the entire state of New York. What kind of monster would want to—”
He halts the accusatory words in their tracks, holds them back grudgingly. Collects himself and clears his throat once more. “Look, we don’t have all the facts yet but we don’t need them. We know Adrian Toomes, and we know he did not deserve to be the victim of such a despicable crime. He was a caring man, a doting husband to his wife Doris, and a loving father to his daughter Liz. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them during this terrible time.
Just like his family, we all will be feeling this loss for a very, very, very long time.”
The hearts of all New Yorkers flush with outrage, anger, grief. Clogged with the burgeoning, bludgeoning, blistering desire for one thing and one thing only.
Justice.

Prithee tell us about your favorite visits to museums, firefly. It’s a long and silent January night and your stories will keep madness from us. (To be read in the voice of a Dickensian child of 6 years old, sitting before the hearth.) ☕️
hey hey!! :) my favorite seafaring vessel, a joy as always to meet u here. fret not, i will not let madness consume you! <3
(the context for the voice definitely helped, i most certainly did read it in the voice of a dickensian child. i can hear the crackle of the hearth as i pen these words!)
oh where to start! this is a bit of a brain dump, but is semi-chronological and images included in the order of discussion
first, summer of 2016, going to the hermitage and making puns about all of the art! they were not good puns. i believe my brother called the statue below a "boar"ing statue. it was quite hot since we went in summer and we were very surprised that the musuem had no ac since there is generally some to protect the art from the elements. so twas a very sticky and humor filled walk thru some art that has seen quite a lot (pic 1)
fall of 2018, went to the met's heavenly body's fashion exhibit with 2 friends from high school. i love & still go to musuem's w one of them, she's v sweet. the exhibit took place in the part of the museum that is older and looks like a church, so it was v prescient!!
