Tradewinds stitched by Sally Sheridan. Pattern ($6.99) designed by Teresa Wentzler.
In 2003 I showed my dad the TW Tradewinds leaflet and asked if he'd like it for his home office.  He wasn't a fan of the sampler section, but very much liked the ship, dolphins and mermaid. Bonus was that the smaller rectangular sized would fit on his office bookshelf.
This project was much larger and more complex than anything I had stitched before. I had dozens of needles threaded with colors and blends. The stitching took me 282 hours over 10 months. I presented the completed and mounted Tradewinds to my dad at Christmas 2004.
Tradewinds graced dad's office for 9 years. When he passed, I reclaimed it and put Tradewinds on my bookshelf. When I moved 2 years ago Tradewinds found a spot on my dresser where I see it daily. And it started whispering to me that I should start stitching again.
I could not have completed Tradewinds without the information and encouragement of the Teresa Wentzler BB and Rotation Stitchers BB groups. Those bulletin boards (BBs) pre-dated Facebook as we know it today.  Now this TW Cross Stitch SAL group serves that purpose. And I’ll be happy to share what I learned with anyone interested in Tradewinds.
Framed Dimensions: 17.5” wide x 11.25” tall
Stitch count: 114H x 210W Fabric: 28 count Confederate Gray Cashel by Zweigart Floss and threads: 59 DMC colors per floss list on leaflet, plus some Kreinik blending filament Modifications to Tradewinds design: • Excluded sampler alphabet, compass and corresponding portion of side borders (sadly this included the mermaids’ tails) • For sparkle added metallic threads to waves under the ship, sun, moon and stars (modification from TWBB) • Over 1 stitches added detail in mermaid faces and flesh (modification from TWBB) New-to-me things that made the project easier: • Gridded the fabric with Sulky in 20 thread (10 stitch) blocks • Stitched on a scroll frame and floor stand • Ott light with 3x magnifier (useful for accuracy, and essential for the over 1 stitches) • Made working copies of the design, marking progress and next step with multiple colors of highlighters • Needle organizer to manage dozens of needles loaded with the threads • Organized the cut floss for blended colors in small baggies with labels
Oh my gosh! Those sails!! <part of a post I wrote in Oct. 2003 after about 20 hours of stitching> I read many posts in TWBB while I was kitting up Tradewinds. And I saw the warnings about the sails. But I thought folks were complaining because the white was boring and there is a good bit of it. Well, I apologize to all those who went before me and survived the sails. Tonight I picked Tradewinds back up and seriously started on the sails. Oh my gosh! Confetti stitching in shades of white/ecru/beige that I can barely distinguish one from another. It begs the question of whether there can be such a thing as too many colors. And blocks of pattern from one sail to the next that are almost the same, but not quite. I started with the jibs, and had initially planned to do the sails mast by mast. Now I'll divide the "sail making" into more parts. <fast forward to Nov. 2020> Now each time I look at the final result I am in awe of Teresa Wentzler’s use of colors in a design. All those colors and confetti stitching are challenging, but well worth the effort.
To avoid burn-out as I tackled my first piece of this size I set monthly goals and rotated between 2 projects: Tradewinds and a small fun stitching project. Another key to success was breaking the work into “bit-sized” portions and the taking a moment to appreciate each accomplishment. Like many of TW’s designs Tradewinds lends itself to this approach: a couple sails at a time, one border panel at a time, the moon and the stars, etc. Completing a discrete item is much more satisfactory for me than working a square inch at a time. Sharing accomplishments and cheering on others in a stitch-along group also kept me engaged.

April 1900 - South Africa The 1st Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment arrived in Bloemfontein, the capital of the Orange Free State, in early April 1900 and remained there for 6 weeks or so. Bloemfontein was the location of a British hospital for the remainder of the war and almost 30 men of the Royal Irish would die there. Most of those men are commemorated on the Bloemfontein War Memorial in President Brand Cemetery. Unfortunately many of the names don't belong to the Royal Irish Regiment.
Lance Corporal Cashel and Privates Aston, Bashford, Fegan, Houston, Magill, McKee, Quinn, Shields and Thompson served with the Royal Irish Rifles. The numbers of Rifles listed appears to be down to the fact that whoever erected the monument neglected to include the regiment on it. Quite an omission.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Privates Magee and McAllister were Royal Irish Fusiliers. Private Powell was in the Gloucestershire Regiment and I can't find a record to match Private Scamell.
Of the men of the Royal Irish Regiment who are recorded as dying in Bloemfontein, and whose names are missing from this panel; Corporal McNamara is listed under the 5th Mounted Infantry, in which over 60 men of the regiment served. Privates Foran and Kelly are listed under Miscellaneous. Missing completely are Lieutenant A.C.S. Fletcher and Privates A. Kavanagh and T. Power.

When the doors were shut on the Church of the Immaculate Conception in 2014, longtime parishioner Patrick Collins knew it would never be a church again than 100 years the spires towered over Harbour Grace, a landmark for ships and a gathering place for the community.
Collins said the decision to close the Harbour Grace Cathedral was made as the building became harder and harder to maintain. Just heating the big stone building for a weekend of mass cost hundreds of dollars millions needed in repairs, it was time to move on.
But in a shuttered old church, with the plaster ceilings falling down, Brenda O'Reilly saw the opportunity.
The church, built in the late 1800s, was purchased by O'Reilly and her husband, Craig Flynn, in 2017. They're spending millions to refurbish the space and create a hospitality hub centered on the Harbour Grace church.
The church's east transept will house a restaurant, the west transept will become a brewery and distillery, and the crypt will be dug out to create a spa. There are also plans to create a hotel on the property.
Use cases for churches like O'Reilly's vision are becoming more common across Canada, largely driven by the need for churches and congregations to downsize as parishioners get older and fewer young people come through the doors and Labrador, hundreds of Roman Catholic parish properties have also been sold to compensate survivors of sexual abuse at the former Mount Cashel Orphanage.
Nicholas Lynch, an associate professor of geography researching sustainable communities and the adaptive reuse of buildings at Memorial University, told CBC News more churches are finding new uses across the country—like the brewery in Harbour Grace, or for housing and community centers in other parts of the country--which can be especially important, he said, as they can keep church buildings as social hubs where people gather.
Lynch says finding new uses for old churches is vital to keeping communities sustainable, especially as congregations continue to age and the problem snowballs watching how buildings moving into the private realm affects communities — O'Reilly says it's something she's fully aware of and she's eager to host community events inside the building.
It's also the plan for Chris Shortall of Pouch Cove, who unexpectedly came into owning St. Agnes Church after throwing what he said were "lowball" bids on four properties on a whim.
He told CBC News this week that he isn't entirely certain of what the building will become but he sees value in keeping it as a community space.
In Harbour Grace, Collins says he's excited for the future of the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Although he knows it won't be his place of worship, he takes comfort in knowing its story can still be shared on the walls of the new brewery.

Queen’s and King’s South Africa Medals to 6416 Private John Halloran, 1st Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment. Halloran was born in Cashel, Co. Tipperary in 1881 and joined the Royal Irish Regiment in Clonmel on 4th August 1898. He served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 16th December 1899 to 10th February 1905. Halloran went to India with the 1st Battalion from 1905 to 22nd January 1906. He was transferred to the Army Reserve on 3rd August 1906 and was discharged on 3rd August 1910, after 12 years’ service. The Clasps on the QSA are interesting as the 1st Battalion didn’t fight at any of those locations. Those clasps were awarded to men of the 5th Mounted Infantry and only 15 men of the Royal Irish Regiment were entitled to them. #18thfoot #royalirishregiment #redcoat #britisharmy #britishempire #boerwar #southafrica https://www.instagram.com/p/CmJ7_QDNrwx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador has approved the sale of 42 properties belonging to the Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation of St. John's, including 12 churches, as dozens more church property sales loom across eastern Newfoundland.
The move will reshape the landscape for Catholics in the St. John's area and beyond as the church — which has been held liable for sexual and physical abuse at the Mount Cashel orphanage — raises money to settle victim claims from the 1940s, '50s and '60s.
