Morro Rock Ecological Preserve, CA (No. 8)
With an oceanfront parking lot located directly under the shadow of awe-inspiring Morro Rock, this popular surf spot is as close to the rock as it gets. Although technically part of Morro Strand, this beach is often referred to as Morro Rock Beach by locals and travelers alike, for reasons that will become obvious the moment you arrive. Easily stroll the base of Morro Rock, keeping an eye out for seabirds (fun fact: the rock is the last of “the nine sisters,” or volcanic mountains that run from the Central Coast to Southern California). Today, Morro Rock is a historic landmark and bird sanctuary home to Peregrine Falcons, Seagulls and all manner of waterfowl which thrive along the rocky landscape. Surfers, picnickers, kite-flyers and sunbathers flock to the beach located just north of the rock, while the south side—protected by the harbor—is popular among kayakers and fishing enthusiasts. Planning on staying in San Simeon or Cambria, two popular Central Coast kayaking destinations in their own right? We encourage you to bring your kayak south to Morro Bay for a unique experience unlike what you’ve already enjoyed. While you might see whales and elephant seals to the north on Highway 1, Morro Bay features its own menagerie of critters, including friendly harbor seals and a year-round otter population that can be observed regularly snacking, napping, and communing among Morro Bay’s plentiful kelp beds.
Similarly, surfers staying in Cayucos love the close proximity to Morro Rock—known as one of the most popular surf spots on the Central Coast. Why not rent a board and catch a few iconic waves for yourself? Depending on the swell, you can also paddle across the harbor side to Sand Spit beach (also accessible from the Los Osos side). Large waves are common here, so it’s important to watch kids while they play in the water (lifeguards are staffed from Memorial Day Labor Day from 10am-6pm). Please note that dogs must be on-leash in this area, but they are welcome to roam freely at the Morro Bay Dog Beach, which stretches six miles north to dog-friendly town Cayucos. With its vast, sandy beach and views of Morro Rock in the distance, you’ll enjoy the walk just as much as your pup. Lastly, parking at Morro Rock Beach is a breeze: just take your pick of spots in this massive parking lot with bathrooms and outdoor showers to clean off sandy toes. Plus, parking wraps south of the rock, providing even more convenience for busy days (you’ll enjoy even greater views of the rock, local wildlife, and glittering back bay as you park the car). That’s a true win-win!

any friends who are living in California--
The Northern Chumash Tribal Council is having an event tomorrow to celebrate the public comment period for Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary, September 20th at 11am-3pm at Morro Rock Jetty Beach, on the south side of Morro Rock at the end of Coleman Rd.
This rally is a great way to learn more about the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary, which is a really important initiative by the Chumash peoples to preserve the coastal ecosystems as well as protect important sacred sites. If you're not able to go, check out the website and sign up for the mailing list.

Huntington Beach State Park also posesses a historic "castle." The building, called Atalaya, was integrated the 1930's by the Huntington's. They bought the place that would have been to become the park in 1930 and used Atalaya as their winter residence. An education center in the park uses a number of displays of local flora and fauna, including an aquarium with a number of live marine animals. Just out anterior to the education center is the doorway to prolonged boardwalk that reaches out in the park's salt marsh. From pristine beaches to lush landscapes, the region offers diverse scenic wonders. In this article, we will embark on a journey through the three most breathtaking areas that define the picturesque charm of the Central California Coast.

McWay Falls, a waterfall cascading onto a secluded beach, is a hidden gem that adds to the enchantment. As the waves crash against the rugged rocks and the mist from the ocean kisses your face, you'll understand why Big Sur has been a muse for artists, writers, and dreamers alike.
Venture into Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, where towering redwoods stand sentinel over the landscape. Hike through lush trails that lead to expansive vistas, providing a sense of solitude and connection with nature. Whether perched on the cliffs or exploring the mystical forests, Big Sur's allure lies in its ability to transport you to a realm where cliffs meet clouds and time stands still.

A Guide To : Morro Bay, California
Tumblr media
Ah, Morro Bay! One of my favorite places!
There's so much to see + do in this little coastal town. I usually make a day trip to spend some time in the sun, eating delicious seafood, walking the beach + getting a little shopping in.
So.. I basically spend all of my time eating/shopping along the embarcadero [aka Morro Bay’s main street] or walking on the beach. There are so many shops + eateries that it's easy to get lost for hours. I like to pop in + out of the shops to see what they have to offer - but will be sure to always stop in my fav spots. One of my favorite spots is the Garden Gallery. I love looking at all the plants + end up walking out with a succulent [or four].
If you walk along the coastal front, you'll get views of the bay. You can see shops coming + going, paddle boarders, spot sea lions + sea otters.. basically get amazing views with the rock in the background.
Two iconic landmarks of morro bay include: Morro Rock + the stacks. you're able to spot these as you're getting closer to the city + you'll easily see them as you walk along. I take pictures of both of these iconic landmarks when I'm in morro bay.. I mean, you kind of have to.
As for food -- you'll be able to find great food no matter where you go, but there are 3 restaurants I like to rotate: Dockside, The Hut + Giovanni's Fish Market. Of course, I have to get clam strips + chips because [1] it's my fav + [2] where else will you find delicious seafood if not at a coastal town!?
Where to Eat:
Dockside
The Hut
Giovanni’s Fish Market
Hot tip: Giovanni’s “To Go” side isn’t as busy as the main restaurant. If you’re hungry and can’t wait!
Where to Sight See:
Morro Rock
The stacks
Sea otter landing
The bay
Where to Shop:
Embarcadero Street
Dolphin Shirt Co Retail Store
MorroMade
FYI: Climbing the rock is prohibited, however, you can walk around most of it and admire the views from the beach.
