Chapter 1 Loading Screen Trivia
Note: Currently, I do not know which of these trivia may be general game trivia or Chapter 1 exclusives (if there is any). And there may be trivia I'm currently missing that I will add later on, if I find any more.
World Detective Organization (WDO) An extra-legal, extra-privileged organization devoted to eradicating the world's unsolved mysteries.
Detective Deed An identification card. These are granted by the World Detective Organization.
Master Detective Among the detectives belonging to the World Detective Organization, this is a detective with a specialized power called Forensic Forte that aids in their investigative activities.
Forensic Forte Those exhibiting innate talent for special powers like clairvoyance or mind-reading are trained by the WDO to develop a supernatural investigative ability called Forensic Forte or simply, Forte.
Amaterasu Corporation Many products are in development, some of which cannot be made public.
Amaterasu Peacekeepers A department of Amaterasu Corporation. They serve as a sort of police force within Kanai Ward.
Kamasaki Underground Passages A number of passages form a grid beneath Kamasaki District. First-timers tend to get lost, but with some acclimating, it's easy to get around quickly.
Riverbank Due to polluted waters, fish are rarely caught.
Kanai Station The only train station in Kanai Ward. It's a magnificent building, but seldom has customers because of the city's isolation.
Ginma District The high-class commercial area of Kanai Ward. There are cafes and restaurants, as well as a large art gallery and clocktower.
Art Gallery The premier art museum in Kanai Ward, located in Ginma District. The space in front of the art gallery is decorated with a giant dinosaur fossil (replica).
Detective in Training A person currently being trained by the World Detective Organization to become a detective.
Nocturnal Detective Agency Inside this detective agency are a kitchen and shower. Yakou lives here.
Kamasaki District The liveliest, most bustling area in Kanai Ward. Many people reside here, and a variety of shops and stalls line the streets.
Kamasaki District Crime generally isn't bad here, unless you venture deeper inside, that is.
Church The priest hears out the residents' worries, offering guidance toward the path of righteousness.
Sun & Moon Hotel A hotel located in Kamasaki District. Since Kanai Ward's isolation from the world three years ago, the number of guests has dramatically decreased.
Secret Club An illegal, members-only casino located in Kamasaki District. One can enjoy slots, roulettes, and card games, but many games have obscene rates and cheating is rampant.
Ginma District Security tends to be pretty tight, likely on account of the frequent patronage by Amaterasu Corporation executives and other wealthy individuals.
Art Gallery There were many visitors prior to the isolation of Kanai Ward, but current attendance is not stellar.
Clocktower A long-beloved landmark among local residents, many of whom are strongly attached to it.
Clocktower The giant clocktower looming over Ginma District. There are clocks set in all four of its sides, so the time of day can be seen from anywhere.
Mansion A mansion located in the high-class residential district on Montclair Street.
Shien The currency used in Kanai Ward. A luxury car can be purchased for five million shien.
Meat Bun A specialty of Kanai Ward and comfort food to the locals. It's loved by children and adults alike.
"Mantou" A popular meat bun shop in Kamasaki District. Operation out of a street stall, the location changes daily. Very reasonably priced at 100 shien apiece.
"Dragon Palace" A popular meat bun shop in Ginma District. They sell at the higher-than-usual price of 500 shien apiece, but the owner insists it's due to superior seasoning.
"29/0" A meat bun shop in Kamasaki District. Relatively new compared to the other shops, they're struggling to attract new customers. The cheese meat buns are most popular, priced at 250 shien apiece.
Metal Fox The religion practiced at the church in Kanai Ward. Its symbol is a spear piercing a crescent moon. Its core doctrine is, "Thou shall not bear old prejudices."
Rumors About the Secret Club Credible rumors suggest there's a behind-the-scenes connection to Amaterasu Corporation.
Kanai Bus System A bus service running throughout Kanai Ward. The bus fee is fixed at 200 shien. Amaterasu Corporation employees ride free.
Kanai Ward Living Condition Perhaps because of the daily rainfall, some people in Kanai Ward don't mind getting wet.
Dronebrella An umbrella developed in the perpetually rainy Kanai Ward. It automatically tracks an authenticated user, shielding them from rain.
TV Programs Nearly all the TV programs broadcasted in Kanai Ward are sponsored by Amaterasu Corporation.
Popular Sports Parkour is popular among the young men of Kamasaki District. New problems have arisen however, what will all the trespassing and running across the top of food stalls.
Crosswalks The crosswalks in Kanai ward detect pedestrians and stop traffic for them. As such, it's fairly uncommon to see people waiting for the signal to change.
Means of Communication Most communications to people outside of Kanai Ward are tapped and monitored by Amaterasu. The phone at the Nocturnal Detective Agency uses a different type of line to prevent eavesdropping.
Treatment of Criminals Criminals captured by the Peacekeepers are sent to detention facilities where they are interrogated until they admit guilt; that is, if they're not disposed of on the spot.
Nail Man The culprit behind the serial murders occurring in Kanai Ward. The Nail Man's crime scenes area always locked rooms filled with nails.
Boy Kei Colan is his name. When his father has time off work, they always play catch together.
Jiel Colan's Apron A work apron made by camera manufacturer WhiteCross. The pockets are durable enough to hold heavy objects without losing shape.
Priest's Eyes Few people have seen the priest's eyes because he's always squinting. As a result, there's a rumor among clergy members that anyone who see his eyes will either become blessed or vanish.
Nun's Stockings All of the nun's red stockings have a thickness of 120 denier or higher. Sh's sensitive to the cold and seeks extra warmth.
Servant's Facial Markings The Metal Fox markings are simply makeup, not tattoos. They're painted on every morning.
Worshipper's Pastime He smokes at least once every hour. Gitan is his preferred brand.
Owner of the Mansion The owner of the mansion made a sizeable amount of money through real estate dealings. A man around the age of 30, an endless sea of rumours surrounds him.
Halara's Coin Halara attacks with a 1-shien coin. Where it lands is carefully calculated for later retrieval.
Flavor of Halara's Candy Depends on the mood. The worse the mood, the sweeter the taste; the better the mood, the lighter the taste.
Desuhiko's Bangs Desuhiko is particular about how his bangs look; it takes about an hour a day to style.
Desuhiko's Beanie Desuhiko's custom-made, designer beanie is waterproof, and cost him several months' pay.
Fubuki's Accessories Fubuki's necklace has a clock motif. The choker is decorated with video playback control symbols.
Vivia's Book Catalog Novels, columns, essays, all sorts of things. There's no particular preference for genre; he reads just to pass time.
Vivia's Garments There are just bandage-like wrappings beneath his coat, so it wouldn't be accurate to call it clothing.
Yakou's Lifestyle A complete night owl, he typically sleeps in until noon, even when there's work to be done. This nocturnal lifestyle was the norm until the Master Detectives arrived.
Seth's Creed The Burroughs family motto is, "Silence is golden." To this day, Seth mumbles in adherence to that creed.
Electrowave Detective A Master Detective with a Forte that can intercept and comprehend radio waves. This detective was not summoned to Kanai Ward.

WIP intro time!
Tumblr media
Are you so certain of the difference, Mr. Lake? Between dark and the light? The Black and the Bright? You’d best learn fast, for those who gaze too long into the Black may soon find themselves unable to stomach the Bright.
Tumblr media
GENRE: Eldritch Noir (detective novel with a touch of cosmic horror!)
AUDIENCE: Adults, I guess? Solid R rating, probably, but it won’t get too bad I don’t think
STATUS: Drafting!
COMPARISONS AND INSPIRATIONS: Alan Wake-esque blurring of reality with all the noir drama of things like The 39 Steps, Marlowe, The Maltese Falcon, etc.
THEMES: The nature of humanity and its place in the universe, humanity vs inhumanity, hope and love in the gaze of the abyss
AESTHETIC: Rain pounding a foggy window, mist and fog obscuring a streetlamp, the clack of shoes in an empty alley, a cigarette being lit in the dark, the buzz of the harsh lights of a diner, thick black smoke swallowing the world around it, the clatter of a metro train overhead, an empty flask, coffee-stained papers haphazardly strewn on a desk
PLAYLIST (in progress!): dark, moody, atmospheric, melancholic, a LOT of jazz.
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS:
Three years after the worst day of his life, Adam Lake is doing better. After all, he’s got a paying (if unstable) job as a private investigator for his best friend, Defense Attorney Cole Parker. Hell, he’s even managed to drink away the memory of Elise Conway, the girl that shattered his heart along with his dreams of becoming an archaeologist. Things are calm. Things are… good.
Enter Evelyn Montclaire, ex-actress and model, current movie producer, and dangerously charming client. Something’s off on her new set, and she wants Adam to find a book that’s gone missing from her office. He’s inclined to say no, but it turns out Cole talked to a young assistant on that very production who’s being accused of murder! Can Adam navigate silver screen politics and the wicked world of the fabulously wealthy? If he wants any chance at making rent, he’ll have to.
Tumblr media
CHARACTERS:
Adam Lake: The detective. Ex-archaeology student and police department washout (insubordination, of course), Adam was picked up by Cole Parker as a private investigator for his new solo law venture. Hates corruption, hates rich people. Simple as.
Cole Parker: The lawyer. Cole is a defense attorney whose father was imprisoned and executed for a crime he didn’t commit. Shares and respects Adam’s contempt for the corrupt police force of Strand City. Loves jazz music and poetry.
Elise Conway: The scholar. An ex-classmate and ex-lover of Adam, Elise has been called upon by Evelyn Montclaire to help her study and decipher a strange book that has come into her possession. Jumped at the chance. Loves history, language, and men with their shit together.
Judy Love: The starlet. Found dead in her dressing room at Panessa Studios under incredibly mysterious circumstances. Filming for her new movie, Concrete Midnights, has been halted.
Evelyn Montclaire: The producer. A lot of history in the movies, currently trying to revive Strand City’s dying film industry. Cold, calculating, and deadly charming.
Annie Hartwell: The assistant. Accused of jealous murder, Annie is desperately seeking the help of Cole. She seems like a scared newcomer to the city, but is it just an act?
Cliff Calloway: The co-star. An older man doing his last movie as a favor to Evelyn. Used to be a huge name in the movies, has been aging out of the leading roles that won him his fame.
Ethan Bennett: Adam’s old partner on the force. Cares a lot about Adam, but firmly believes he can change the system from the inside. Still, has been known to slip Adam classified info as a favor, though it takes some convincing.
Tumblr media
Disclaimer!!!!!
If you’ve read this far, you’re probably wondering about the setting of this book. Concrete Midnights takes place in a fictionalized city in the American Pacific Northwest during the 1930s. I feel like I should take the opportunity to mention this book takes place in an alternative history, and will do its absolute best to steer away from the topics of racism and sexism! Nobody wants to deal with that stuff, least of all me, a white man! That’s gross!
As always, thanks for reading, and I’ll see you around!

Today I drew Bessie Blount Griffin. She was born on November 24th in 1914. In Hickory (Now Chesapeake), Virginia. She unfortunately had to discontinue her elementary education in the 6th grade, but later she earned a GED after her family moved to New Jersey. She studied nursing at the Community Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Newark, while they were developing a passion in the field of physical therapy (although the profession was not formalized and established until her her birth). She attended Panzer College of Physical Education (now Montclair State University) and Union County Junior College (Union County College now) where she would obtained certification in physical therapy. As one of the few African American physical therapists at the time, she blended her interpretive dance, her hobby, to enhance her patient's treatments.Unfortunately the World War II, thousands of American soldiers in need of physical therapy as they returned to the US. Bessie practiced at various veterans' hospitals restoring physical function to wounded soldiers (since mostly of them became amputees due to their injuries). Recognizing that much of the equipment in use at the time was not really great, Bessie found innovative ways to rehabilitate her patients. In particular, she helped arm amputees compensate by teaching them to use their feet. She also created a food receptacle equipped with an electrical motor that propelled food through a protruding tube which was inserted into the patient's mouth as they were sitting upright,it was called 'Portable Receptacle Support' to which she received patent for on April 24th in 1951. 3 years later after she filed her patent and that same year she got married to Thomas Griffin and the two would have a son called Philip. In 1952. The French Government purchased the patent rights of the Portable Receptacle Support and they put it into widespread use in military hospitals across the country and in some of its colonies. This ingenious apparatus positioned her as one of the earliest inventors in the burgeoning field of physical therapy.Bessie also invented a disposable cardboard emesis basin, a device that is still standard in Belgian hospitals today. In 1953. She was the first black woman to appear on the tv program 'The Big Idea' which exposed her inventions to a popular audience. In 1969. Bessie began a second career in forensics as a chief examiner for police department in Norfolk and Portsmouth, Virginia. She was also the first American woman admitted as a student at the Document Devision of the Metropolitan Police Forensic Science Laboratory in London, England (specifically Scotland Yard) in 1977. She maintained a private practice as a consultant to law enforcement and law firms on legal strategy and procedure until 1983. Bessie also enjoyed a brief stint in journalism, she made breakthroughs in research in medical graphology, she held high ranking memberships in numerous respected organizations and she was even an outspoken advocate of equal rights for the marginalized. She was bestowed several honors in her lifetime, including the New Jersey Joint Legislative Commendation.Bessie died on December 30th in 2009. In Newfield,New Jersey from old age.
If it weren't for her, amputees would face even more difficulty in life.

a few quick notes abt astoria's main modern verse, developed alongside @montclair:
astoria lives in stockholm until she's four, then in reykjavic until she's seven. for the next seven years she lives in venice. she moves to london, lives there from ages fourteen to eighteen, and then she moves to dublin for university. she moves back to london with baldwin after she graduates.
when she kills elyssa and evander, she calls philippe for help. he helps her dispose of the bodies and brings her home with him to stay there, and helps coach her on what to say to the police. he helps her smooth out her story (that they're missing and she's getting scared of how long they've been gone), and practice being believably frightened. she's very good at it. she doesn't need much coaching.
baldwin is present for most of this, alongside his father; he is the only other person in the world who knows the full story. she tells him details she never tells philippe. he is the only person she will talk to about it, too.
philippe insists that she learn how to protect herself. he encourages her to take self-defense classes, and he teaches her how to shoot before gifting her her first (and, for a good long time, only) gun.
astoria joins the family's business in their public relations department. the plan is for her to eventually rise to CCO when baldwin takes over as CEO, and so she's primarily assigned to baldwin. they work well together, and so it's very easy for her to do her job. she is not entirely responsible for his public image but she's very hands-on in making sure that he's displayed in the best possible way in the media.
philippe hires her specifically for that reason. he also knows that he has a degree of control over astoria because he knows her secret, and quite literally knows where the bodies are buried. he starts involving astoria in some of the less legal aspects of the business, though he's careful not to bring her into anything remotely violent until she and baldwin are engaged. at this point i'm guessing he probably leaves it to baldwin to determine how involved astoria is in that regard.
astoria does extremely shady shit. bribery, blackmail, extortion, money laundering. she hasn't killed anyone at philippe's request, but if baldwin asked her she wouldn't hesitate. she has, however, definitely helped philippe out by torturing someone for him.
everyone expects her to mellow out when she has kids. however, when she and baldwin adopt miyako after her parents die, she just gets more fiercely protective, and she's absolutely devoted to her.

Lock Bumping - A Sign of the Times?
I grew up in a small town in the 1940s and I don't ever remember ever feeling a need to lock our doors. First of all, most of us were poor, so we didn't have a lot of valuable laying around for the taking. But we live in a different world now.
We have had 4 burglaries in our neighborhood since July. Two of them were directly behind our house. So I had already been thinking of ways to keep our home safe. I ordered some door alarms that would deter someone from breaking in. We put in security lights. And I was feeling pretty good until I read the article about Lock Bumping.
I never cease to be amazed at all the different methods a thief will use to gain entry into your home. I thought I had heard everything. Do you even know what Lock Bumping is? Well, I sure didn't, so I started doing some research to know exactly what it is and how it works.
Now if you are not familiar with it, you need to be. The fact is that most of our houses have 2 to 3 doors that have locks. That probably doesn't even include PVC doors, garage doors and storage shed doors that are secured only by cylinder locks.
What Exactly is Lock Bumping?
In a nutshell, using this technique, criminals use a specially-cut key which is inserted and knocked on, causing all the pin tumblers in the lock to split and the lock opens. As I understand it, it works best on cylinder locks. Most older homes are very vulnerable because cylinder locks are used. Unfortunately, that includes most of us. And here's the crazy part, there are many "how to" videos on YouTube. So anyone with a computer has access to Lock Bumping.
An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure
So how does the average homeowner protect themselves? Here is some important information to have to make sure our homes are safe..
The only real answer is to ensure that all your cylinder locks are of good quality -minimum of 5-6 pins and preferably some kind of sidebar mechanism, and are sold as bump proof. This way you will be covering yourself against not only lock bumpers but also those who have a little more skill and may try to pick the lock in other ways.
There is a product called Pickbuster. It is a solution which is squirted into your cylinder locks and makes them safe from lock bumping. It coats the pins inside the lock and prevents them bouncing when an attempt is made to bump the lock.
Check the locks to all the entrances to your house. Are they all cylinder locks? If so, consider changing them to either a cylinder lock or a lever door lock. A lever lock cannot be bumped.
If you have to use a cylinder lock replacement, quality is really important. Most manufacturers offer 'bump proof ' cylinder locks and this is an option that you should seriously consider.
Here's a scary thought. Most of us have sliding doors or patio doors. These are prime targets for being bumped because often times they are often mass produced and tend to have small poor quality locks. Stats show that over 50% of these kind of doors can be bump locked.
If you happen to live in an apartment, you probably already know that the locks have been Master keyed, therefore they are easier to 'bump' open. The only real solution is to replace them with high quality 'bump proof' locks. Granted, it's an added expense, but which is more expensive, a new lock or a break in?
Here's a little known fact. Did you know that factory made doors of any kind tend to be fitted with the same kind of locks? Someone whose business is to steal your personal belongings would know this and be looking for that particular kind of door.
Will the Insurance Company Pay if it's not Forced Entry?
The answer to that is yes, no and maybe. It depends on the insurance company you are dealing with. However there is a caveat we should be aware of. In order for an insurance company to issue a claim, there has to be evidence of forced entry. When a door is bump locked, it won't appear to have been tampered with. Even worse, a lot of times the thief leaves the door open when they leave. So then as a home owner you wonder, did I leave the door open? This would appear to be an accident to an insurance company.
Then you find yourself in the situation of not only having your personal property taken, but if the insurance company chooses not to issue a claim, you have no way to get reimbursement for your stolen items. Not a great scenario to be faced with.
What Can We Do?
If someone is determined to break into your house, they will try it. That's even more reason we need to get all the facts and make a decision on what we need to do to keep our home and property safe. Here are some things you can do:
There are lots of Lock Bumping videos on YouTube and other internet videos. Take the opportunity to view some of these videos.
There is also lots of useful information on the internet. Just Google Lock Bumping!
Lock Smiths can help.
Talk to someone in the police department.
Talk to the folks at Home Depot or Lowe's and see what they have to offer to homeowners.

Tim Scott steps into the spotlight as he tries to negotiate police reform for Republicans
Tumblr media
The South Carolina lawmaker at the center of negotiations on an expansive policing reform bill has found himself “choking on my own fears" when officers stop him while driving or walking on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol.
“I have experienced the pain of discrimination,” Tim Scott, the Senate's only Black Republican, said last month during his nationally televised response to President Joe Biden’s joint address to Congress. “I know what it feels like to be pulled over for no reason. To be followed around a store while I’m shopping.”
For weeks, Scott has been meeting with Democrats in Congress on a bill aimed at holding law enforcement accountable for violent encounters and developing a system to track problematic officers. If he can reach a deal, it will break a months-long stalemate on Capitol Hill following demands for policing reforms in the wake of George Floyd's murder nearly a year ago.
It's also thrust the soft-spoken South Carolinian into the spotlight on an issue with broad political ramifications. Success is likely to vault Scott to the forefront of a party trying to appeal to voters of color.
"His position as a Republican, as a person of color, but also somebody who has experienced police discrimination ... I just think for all kinds of reasons, he's really uniquely positioned to broker a compromise to try to get Democrats and Republicans together," said Gibbs Knotts, dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at The College of Charleston in Scott's home state. "I think if there's really anyone who can do it, it's somebody like Tim Scott, who I think is generally respected."
A substantive compromise on an issue that has polarized the country – from the Defund the Police movement on the left to the Blue Lives Matter counter from the right – would be a remarkable achievement in a Congress known for its partisan acrimony and derided for its ineffectiveness. That has increased the pressure on Scott and the other negotiators to find middle ground quickly while momentum for reform exists.
But there also is skepticism that Scott can bring his Republican colleagues along in the conversation that has largely been led by progressive activists. Jason Williams, assistant professor of justice studies at Montclair State University who has studied the Black Lives Matter movement, called Scott a Donald Trump loyalist who "tends to pander to the right" on behalf of a party more interested in stalling until pressure for dramatic reform subsides.
"I see him giving absolutely nothing to the cause on this," Williams said.
Despite progress both sides have reported, a deal is unlikely to be reached by Tuesday, the one-year anniversary of Floyd's death and the date by which Biden said he wanted to have a bill on his desk to sign.
"We're still progressing," Scott told reporters on Capitol Hill Wednesday. "The deeper you dive into it, the more there is to talk about. The good news is we finally found the bottom of the tank and we're working our way back up."
Scott’s feelings of fear and dread around law enforcement mirror the angst expressed by many African Americans as the U.S. reckons with racial discrimination and police brutality after Floyd died last May while suffocating under the knee of of Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin.
Even before Floyd's death, 84% of Black adults said that when dealing with police they are generally treated less fairly than white people, according to a 2019 Pew Research Center poll. More than six in 10 white adults agreed.
But the solutions Scott is pushing as part of legislation to improve policing do not include broad federal mandates leaders of the Black Lives Matter movement are demanding, such as a complete ban on chokeholds and no-knock warrants, and an end to qualified immunity for individual officers accused of excessive force, which are in the Democrats' proposal.
"There is a systemic problem with policing in the United States," said Rep. Karen Bass, D-Calif., a member of the Congressional Black Caucus who is negotiating the bill with Scott and Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J. "By enacting transformative reform on a national level, we have a chance to address it."
Instead, Scott’s Justice Act, first proposed last year following the death of Floyd, calls for beefed up training that emphasizes de-escalation, increases sharing of disciplinary records between agencies on officers who move from one department to another, and offers agencies grants to equip officers with body cameras and incentives to end chokeholds.
And Scott has held firm against activists' demands that the qualified immunity officers have for protection against lawsuits be weakened, proposing instead to make it easier to sue the agencies that employ the officers – an idea some Democrats have said they are willing to consider.
"The real question is how do we change the culture of policing?" Scott said on CBS' Face the Nation earlier this month. "I think we do that by making the employer responsible for the actions of the employee. We do that with doctors. We do that with lawyers. We do that in almost all of our industries. And if we do that in law enforcement, the employer will change the culture.

#Repost @tonis.kitchen • • • • • • Montclair, New Jersey We are very excited to announce our latest project, Toni’s Café!🍴 Beginning this week, our mobile Café will make regular rounds in the Montclair community offering on-the-go meals of hot soups, sandwiches and coffee to local residents. The Café will also carry microwavable meals prepared at Toni’s Kitchen for residents to take home. Additional routes are being planned for Bloomfield. 💛 **Link in our bio** has all the details🗞 (@baristanet) This project was initiated by then-MKA student Naren Rajani '20 who learned of Toni’s Kitchen’s interest in launching a food truck. Rajani organized multiple fundraisers to raise money to launch a mobile café. He also partnered with Rich Brown, an active member of the Toni’s Kitchen Advisory Committee, to work through the many logistics needed to bring the idea to life. #TonisKitchenMontclair is especially grateful to Montclair Police Officer, Garth Guthrie, and the Montclair Police Department as a whole for the support they have provided. Officer Guthrie has worked with Toni’s Kitchen to ensure some residents with needs that might not be visible are being introduced to Toni’s Café and connected to its services.
