“to look life in the face, always to look life in the face, and to know it for what it is. at last, to know it, to love it for what it is, and then to put it away.... always the years between us, always the years, always the love, always the hours.”

thoughts from tonight's omitb episode: *spoilers ahead!*
.
.
.
.
.
so where can we find that full olicharles duet?
i was not expecting oliver to play the lead, but when i tell you he KILLED it
do we ever actually find out the plotline of death rattle (dazzle)?
my crush on meryl streep only intensified after this ep. she is so talented and i really do hope she makes it back some way next season.
also really hope this is renewed (and soon)! you can't kill off someone as beloved as sazz and then just leave it on a cliffhanger...
charles in sequins. you know what i'm going to say.
i hope to see more of theo next season if/when it does get renewed.
overall great third season! i liked the deviation, and i'm curious to see where the characters are going to go now that they've all had tremendous confidence boosters. i'm also interested to see how charles's character develops; he lost brazzos (again), he lost joy, he almost lost oliver to a heart attack, and now he's lost sazz to yet another murder in the building.
is there a moriarty-type figure here? we shall see!

♡ wip whenever (this time on an actual wednesday!!!) i'm going to post the second chapter of sweet dreams (aka inception au) on friday, whoo! here's a piece from the second chapter. tagging: @nsewell, @nat-seal-well, @evilbunnyking, @deepinifhell, @serenpedac, @crownleys, @agentnatesewell and YOU 🫵
“Look,” Charlotte says, tucking an idle hair strand behind her ear. Nate could listen to her talk forever, no matter how mundane the subject might be. “There's so many other things I still don't know about you. Like your favourite colour or the size of your shoe. Or how you feel about Eminem. This is the same.”
Nate can't help but laugh. He doesn't ask who Eminem is even though the inquiry is on the tip of his tongue. He looks at Charlotte's beloved face, he looks at her and thinks how grateful he is that she's his friend. Friends are precious and hard to come by for vampires.
“I appreciate the sentiment,” he says, because he doesn’t want to tell her that she's wrong.
The silence they fall into is comfortable. Being with Charlotte has always felt so… easy. Natural like water in a lake. Sugary sweet like raspberry jam. He adores that feeling like the gift it is.
“What can you tell about yourself that I don’t already know?” he asks eventually, when the quietness grows too much for him.
“Well,” Charlotte says, thinking. She sloshes her tea in her mug by rotating it in her slender hands. “I play tennis with my dad on Sundays and win every time, I used to have a crush on Meryl Streep, I don't like broccoli and I'm afraid of horses.”
She’s teasing him, but he doesn’t mind, drinking every detail of her life like sweet nectar.
“Why horses?” he asks amusedly.
Charlotte gives him a look. “Because they're fucking huge,” she says holding her hand above her head to make a point.

Oliver Putnam, you absolute maniac, you did it! You produced a hit and got to get with a girl who looks like Meryl fucking Streep, you lucky wonderful bastard! I'm jelly
Listen, I liked Joy but goddammit, honey, if you were really involved with this, revenge is not a good look on you, I have to decline. Also, why does Charles always get with women who want to murder him?! The most boring and sweet mf on the planet 🤣 (Okay, Jan was a serial killer BUT STILL)
Sazz, I mean it when I say it: You will be missed. I gasped at the finale, she was the most beloved recurring character on the show 😭
As for the producers, I have to say they were my suspects early on, from around Oliver's first heart attack. But I left them aside for a while because I thought they might not even have a legit killer this season and circled back to them these last few episodes. They were the only ones who had something to gain by killing Ben (the show) and be ruthless and detached from their humanity enough to actually do it, like every other rich person walking around. They were the only ones with a real motive I thought back then and I am SO glad it turned out this way.
I'm not mad I got it right. It didn't "lose" me. I still gasped and got emotional and laughed with both of them. I still was yelling early on in the episode "Oh my god, it was him! She kissed him and he must have wiped his lips!" Doesn't matter the actual movements were a little different. All I'm trying to say is that a well crafted story ALWAYS beats a twist for shock value. Always. I don't give a f if you give the greatest reveal, if it's unearned, I won't feel good. Period.
I'm so glad this show is so cute and funny and well crafted. I'm glad it exists. And I need the soundtrack of that damn musical!

hi again! ✨ here’s another fic rec, this time about fics that are based off movies or books let me know what you think 🎞️📚🩷
☆ Who Painted the Moon Black by throughthedark
“People died,” Harry whispers so quietly Louis strains to hear. “People died, and I killed some of them. How does life just go on after something like that?”
Louis shakes his head. “I don't know. It just does.”
Hunger Games AU where Louis Tomlinson is district six's victor from the 69th Hunger Games and Harry Styles is district seven's victor from the 72nd Hunger Games.
notes: this is one of my favorite fics of all time, you don’t have to be a big HG fan to enjoy this story ( but if you are i think it’s very accurate to the saga) so beautifully written and so gut wrenching in equal parts, amazing ending, cannot recommend it enough <3
☆ Take My Breath Away by RealityBetterThanFiction
There is a prestigious school in the British Royal Navy classified as Premier Delta - or as it is known by its flyers, 1D. These select pilots are an elite set of Naval lieutenants who are trained in the skill of aggressive aerial combat. They are instruments of war, trained in times of peace. They are dogfighters, relentless and fearless in their mission to protect their beloved country. From their lofty vantage, they are always watching, waiting, and ready to lay it all on the line.
Lt. Harry Styles, call sign Sparrow, is a prodigy when it comes to flying. The owner of an unrivaled Naval pedigree, being a pilot was always written in the stars for Harry. With his trusty RIO, Lt. Niall Horan, Harry has made an unprecedented ascension in the ranks of the Naval aerial combat elite, and has been recruited to the esteemed Premier Delta flight school, carrying on his family’s legacy. What he finds there are unexpected friendships, perilous challenges, and something beyond what he ever thought possible. Because as his father had always told him, before the great Captain Styles went tragically missing in combat, you don’t fall in love with the sky, you fall in love with what keeps you on the ground.
notes: checking the fic again for this rec I can’t find if it said it explicitly BUT this one gives mayor top gun vibes throughout the whole story, a really fun and cute fic
☆ The Afterlife Fic (The Best I Ever Had in My Entire Life... Or Death) by LovingCup
AU- After dying in an accident, Louis Tomlinson arrives in the Afterlife. Not Heaven and not Hell, Louis finds himself in Judgment City UK: a pristine city where the food and entertainment are divine and the newly departed must undergo a Review of their life on Earth to determine if they have lived a life worthy of advancement in the universe, or if they must be returned to Earth to be born again in a new body.
On his first full day in the Afterlife, Louis meets Harry Styles, and the two have an instant connection. Over the course of their Reviews, they fall in love and begin to find that even though they didn't know each other on Earth, they are nonetheless linked to one another in perfect ways. Both are hoping to move ahead in the universe together, but they are challenged with the threat of separation if one or both of them is sent back to Earth to be born again.
Loosely based on the Albert Brooks' film "Defending Your Life" starring Brooks and Meryl Streep. One scene in particular is drawn from the movie, but other than that scene and the general concept, this story veers far away from the film. There were no blowies in the 1991 movie, I swear!
notes: another one of my favorites! for what I remember, a long read, but so worth it. This story touches on topics of grief, loss, love, life and fears through the life of Louis and Harry and how they navigate their relationship in the afterlife (ends good).
☆ You Fill My Lungs With Sweetness (Can I Be Close to You?) by sideofzemblanity
Busy picturing Harry’s stupid face on the stupid dummy, Louis goes through a series of kicks before returning to a low guard and cycling through punches. Harry’s still talking, gesturing with his hands as he rounds Louis, standing to his back. “You do a few butt-shaping exercises, tighten this up a little bit,” he smacks Louis’ arse and the omega freezes while Harry cheerfully continues, “you could pull this off.”
“You know what?” Louis snaps, lifting on his tiptoes to get the leverage so he can wrap his arm around the alpha’s neck, forcing him to bend in half while Louis locks him in a chokehold. “Pull this off,” he snarls. They stagger over a few steps, Louis gritting his teeth as Harry tries to break free. “Is it because Payne hates me?” he complains, voice edging on an annoyed whine, “Or is it, like, an omega thing?”
Too late, Louis realizes that Harry has got a grip on his leg and this time as he pulls against Louis’ hold, it loosens, the alpha lifting him in the air before slamming his back into the mat, breaking Louis’ grip completely. Harry kneels on the mat, hovering over him with a sneer, “Don’t kid yourself. Nobody thinks of you that way.”
aka the Miss Congeniality ABO AU nobody asked for
notes: SOOO funny, has a little bit of angst, friends to lovers, a short read so you don’t have excuses;)
☆ Come My Love Again by softfonds
Harry Styles is handsome, clever, and rich. At least that’s what his friends say of him. He also thinks of himself as a matchmaker in Highbury, pairing people together when he finds the time. But when the arrival of a certain gentleman flips Harry’s world on its head, he starts to question everything that was once all too familiar to him, including his relationship with his good friend, Mr. Tomlinson. An Emma AU.
notes: I really enjoyed the little bit of angst on this fic, i think it’s omegaverse if i don’t remember it wrong?. enjoy of Louis being a classic gentlemen
☆ In The Still Of The Night by jacaranda_bloom
In a society where omegas are expected to follow a predetermined path, Louis strives for more; for his voice to be heard, for recognition, for true love.
In a world where your past defines your future, Harry fights against the system; for equality, for a different life, for acceptance.
When their two worlds collide, will they be beaten down by conformity or will they rise up and forge a new path together?
OR the Dirty Dancing AU where Louis is a feisty omega who wants to change the world, Harry is an alpha from the wrong side of the tracks, and nobody puts Louis in a corner.
notes: the fic that I didn’t know I need, is dirty dancing with larry do I really need to say more?
☆ in a world alone by falsegoodnight
Harry’s breath catches as the glow grows bigger and bigger until he’s squinting his eyes and blinking at the sudden intense brightness. He closes his eyes, rubbing at them helplessly. When his eyes open again- he gasps, grip loosening on his bow as he gawks at the sight before him.
Because the swan is gone.
And in its place is the prettiest omega Harry has ever seen.
A Swan Lake AU
notes: a really cute one shot, fairy tale vibes ;)
☆ hold on to your heart by falsegoodnight
“Come here for a second.”
Harry’s brows furrow, glancing aside like he thinks Louis may be talking to someone else. Louis jerks his head beside him, impatient, and the alpha steps into the room cautiously.
Louis turns back to Royce and Hunt who are staring at him in confusion. He pastes a pleasant smile onto his face, clasping his hands together. “Gentlemen, I understand. I understand the predicament that we are in…” He clears his throat. “But there is something you should know.”
“What is this, Louis?” Royce asks, exchanging a look with Hunt.
Taking a few steps backward until he is beside a very bewildered looking Harry, Louis takes a deep breath. “We are, uh –” He reaches out and touches Harry’s arm. You cannot actually be doing this, he thinks. But then he does. “We are getting married.”
The Proposal AU, where Louis is the no-nonsense editor in chief of one of the largest publishing houses in the country, and Harry is the unlucky assistant that gets roped into a fake engagement to prevent his boss from being deported. Things don't go as planned.
notes: really funny and cute I enjoyed reading it sm!!
☆ through chaos as it swirls, it’s us against the world by sweetfairydreams
corporal styles is sent on a suicidal mission, at his hands the lives of hundreds of men that are going straight into a trap. he ends up finding louis, the french and most beautiful boy he ever seen, and a baby, in a basement of a dead city.
based on the movie 1917
notes: a cute and wholesome story <3

'On Tuesday, Cillian Murphy was at his parents’ home in Cork, Ireland, drinking a cup of tea when his phone started buzzing. A glance at the dozens of texts revealed the news: For the first time, Murphy had been nominated for the best actor Oscar, for his performance as the title character in “Oppenheimer.”
“It’s very, very humbling,” Murphy, 48, said in an interview by phone on Tuesday. “I’m kind of a little in shock.”
“It’s just a real honor to be involved in a film that has connected so powerfully with people in a way that we never expected,” he added.
In “Oppenheimer,” a stunning biopic by the director Christopher Nolan, Murphy plays the American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, a brilliant, enigmatic figure known as the father of the atomic bomb, a man consumed with ambition and haunted by his past. After opening alongside “Barbie” on July 21, “Oppenheimer” quickly became beloved by critics and fans alike, grossing just over $950 million at the worldwide box office.
Murphy had collaborated with Nolan before, taking supporting roles in movies like “Batman Begins” and “Inception,” but his latest work for the director became a breakthrough moment, with Murphy winning praise for the intensity and emotional complexity he brought to the role. At the Golden Globes, he won best actor in a drama; he also was up for a Critic’s Choice Award (losing out to his fellow Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti); and he’s in the running for a Screen Actors Guild Award, punctuating what has been an exceptionally busy awards season for Murphy.
“It’s been new enough for me, but I gotta say, I think I’m getting good at it,” he said, chuckling. He marveled about a recent ceremony where he was stuck in a line with Meryl Streep.
“That may never happen to me again in my life, and it’s just a wonderful feeling,” he said.
In a phone interview, Murphy also discussed what fascinated him about Oppenheimer the man, how he prepared for the role and the cast’s group chat. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.
Were you watching the Oscars announcement?
No, I was at home in Cork with my mom and dad and my wife. And my phone started popping, so I figured it was good news. Everybody started texting. You know, you can’t really avoid good news or bad news, but it’s better when it’s good news.
Oppenheimer is a different role than what you’ve done in the past. What drew you to this character?
Well, he is, in Chris’s words, the most important man that ever lived. He changed the course of the 20th century, and we are all living in Oppenheimer’s world. He was complex and contradictory and flawed and vain and arrogant, but he was still immensely charismatic and fascinating. It was a huge responsibility. But the sorts of roles I enjoy are the ones where you think, I have no idea how I’m going to play this.
What steps did you take to prepare?
Oh man, I had six months. From the moment Chris called me, I just started working — from the inside out and from the outside in. I did an awful lot of reading and research and watched every single archival footage about him. Then I immediately started conditioning my body because he was very interesting how he carried himself physically and how slight his frame was. But a lot of it was just walking around my basement in Dublin talking to myself and practicing, practicing and practicing.
As you did that research, was there anything surprising to you about Oppenheimer?
He was an absolute contradiction in so many ways. He could have been an artist or a writer or a poet. But he was also this freakishly bright human being. A lot of his contemporaries would say he was the brightest man in the room at all times. But he was also very temperamental and fragile emotionally and mentally, particularly in his youth. If you were writing a fictional character, it wouldn’t add up to a character people could identify with. But in fact, he was just like the rest of us. He was just a human being. So that’s what I really identified with — his humanity.
What was it like for you to work with such an all-star cast?
A total gift. Every single cast member was fearless in the film, like they had done so much research and could improvise on the spot about their character and the real-life events. I felt really held and carried by everybody on the movie. We’re still all really close. There was a really good bond on this film, and it remains very very strong.
Is it true there’s an “Oppenhomies” group chat?
That is true, yes. Olivia Thirlby came up with that moniker.
You and Nolan have a long history of working together. How did that impact your work with this film?
Oh, it’s crucial for me. I don’t think I could have made this film with anyone else, without that level of trust that goes back six movies and 20 years. He really, really pushed me and I wanted to be pushed. He expects excellence from you because that’s what he delivers himself every single day.
Is there something distinctive about a Nolan set or film that’s different from other projects you’ve been involved in?
I think it’s the level of focus. It’s quite remarkable. It’s laserlike, the way he uses time, because time, I’ve realized, is your most valuable commodity when you’re on a film set. So much of it gets wasted. When you come on a Chris Nolan set, you come on to work. There’s no phones, there’s no chatting. There’s no video footage, there’s no monitors. That’s not to say it’s not a pleasant environment. It’s a private, focused environment. That’s how you get the best out of people.
In terms of time, you didn’t have much of that at all right?
No, we filmed in 57 days, and three of them were a preshoot. So it was insane, the pace of it, but it never felt rushed. We never left a scene behind.
Some people have criticized the film for the inclusion of nude scenes. What do you make of that critique?
Well, I think those things are essential for the story. If you’re familiar with the story, it was his relationship with Jean Tatlock which was the thing that really made him lose his security clearance and ultimately kind of cost his career. I think it was vital to highlight the intimacy and closeness of their relationship.
Besides the Academy Awards ceremony, what else is in the future for you?
I have a film called “Small Things Like These,” which I produced and acted in and that’s opening at the Berlin Film Festival in February. I’m really proud of the movie. It’s produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. They paid for it and we produced it together. So I’m juggling that and attending all these events at the same time.'

Scattered thoughts on the West Side Story remake
Tumblr media
In general, I really enjoyed the film, largely on the strength of the performances. Everyone ranged from pretty good to amazing, with Rachel Ziegler and Ariana DeBose being the standouts. And Rita Moreno's supporting part was brilliant-- I like how she was given a substantial role and not just a lame ass cameo.
The music and dancing were great too. Ziegler's voice is just gorgeous. One trend I don't like in some modern musicals is casting famous people who cannot sing (Russell Crowe in Les Mis and Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia still haunt my nightmares). While not everyone here is a 100% unknown, I like that everyone seems to have been hired because they can actually hit the notes.
I thought the beefed up backstories for some of the characters were really interesting. (Chino's buffed up personality and background were my favorite of these new touches. He goes from being a breathing plot device to a truly tragic figure in this version.) I know some people don't like how Tony was made into an ex-con, but I appreciate that this time around they wanted to make him feel more like a credible ex-gang member. That's something I never bought in the 1961 film.
Speaking of the 1961 version, I haven't seen it in a few years, so I can't compare the two in more detail, though I do remember enough to where I can say I preferred the staging and direction in certain scenes in the older film. A lot of it has to do with my personal aesthetic preferences though.
Like, I'm not as crazy about Spielberg's staging of Tony and Maria's first encounter at the dance. The dancing between the rival groups is spectacular, but there's so much going on that the lovers get overwhelmed by it. The blocking of the scene has them retreat behind the bleachers to have their first dance (a parallel to showing Romeo and Juliet's instant chemistry through a conversation in sonnet form). However, I much prefer the 1961 film's dreamy approach, where time slows and only the lovers remain in focus. I get not wanting to repeat such an iconic moment or it coming off as corny in the 2020s, but I don't think it was replaced by anything of equal inspiration.
Actually, this brings me to a general issue I had with the remake's more pronounced "gritty and realistic" approach. One on hand, it makes sense-- the original show and 1961 film were noted for their realism, or at least, their very expressionist-tinged realism. It's meant to contrast with the romanticism of the lovers, who like Romeo and Juliet, want to go "Somewhere" their love won't be poisoned by divided loyalties and violence.
However, the more pronounced sense of unvarnished reality has two drawbacks in Spielberg's version. One, it makes the "falling in honestly and truly love in less than 48 hours" thing a bit harder to swallow. I can buy love at first sight in heightened, operatic reality-- less so in a setting that wants to resemble everyday reality.
Second, there are a hell of a lot of moments where characters break into song and the extras around them give them "wtf" looks. It's like the gag in Enchanted where Giselle starts singing in the park and Robert's like, "what now," only that movie's a meta-parody of animated musicals and WSS wants me to invest in this world and these characters. Having other people go "0_0" when someone sings takes me out the movie. You can't have your old-fashioned musical and your 21st century "lol irony take nothing seriously" schtick in the same film.
But overall, I really enjoyed this one. It's a remake that isn't just a rehash of a beloved film and it makes decisions that distinguish it completely. I plan on rewatching the 60s version, actually, just to reintroduce myself to it, since it has been over half a decade now.

Apparently the AppleTV show Extrapolations premiered a few weeks back on, which is exciting news here at Harpy Headquarters, because I’m aaaall up in dere! (Musically, I mean.)
The show unfolds in the near future (beginning in 2037) and features an all-star cast. With interconnected narratives involving dozens of people all over the world, the series “extrapolates” what may very well happen due to global climate change. Extrapolations' plot was steered by various scientific experts who consulted with the writing team on several plausible hypothetical scenarios.
It’s not getting the greatest reviews from some critics. They're cynical about everything from its warmth to its politics to its ambition. But my sweetie Sean the “Let’s Fix This Shit!” poly-sci major and Mer the “There is No Plan(et) B!” bleeding heart are both enjoying it. I mean... we're kinda biased cuz if you listen to the opening credits of any Extrapolations episodes, you''ll hear my violin, voice, and most satisfyingly, some theremin hovering both high above and low below the rest of the music, especially in the final moments. Feels good man.
The second episode stars an animal behavioralist who communicates with a wild female humpback whale via translation software that lends her the voice of the human scientist's deceased mother. Their conversations are poetic and haunting. I used to cry inconsolably at the end of wild animal movies as a kid. Apparently nothing's changed? FUCK. THANKS A LOT, MERYL STREEP.
Sean and I binged just in time to watch the official premiere of "2059: Face of God', which I’m especially heavily featured in! During the cataclysmic finale and end credits, you can hear me again (loads of theremin and violin) on a wistful cover of beloved Louis Armstrong's “What A Wonderful World”, featuring the music director who hired me, Blake Leyh, and his child Ryoko on vocals. There’s something especially moving to me about Ryoko's tender performance. These kids deserve to have their voices heard before it’s too late.
Fam, I'm only able to accept freelance gigs like these because of everyone who keeps showing up to support and nourish me. Thanks, all, for bolstering my lifelong dream of being involved in making music television and film.*
I hope you enjoy our tune!
*Especially big snugz to Blake and Ryo. How lovely to be dancing in the clouds with you.

I got a “Cars” poster to color in, by a guy who worked there and I was SO happy- to this day I don’t know if he did it because he thought I was funny or to get me to shut up lmao)
