One of the greatest joys when almost nothing else feels right--stethoscopes! And...the one I ordered on a whim in the middle of the night when I was feeling bad. Doesn't matter how he got here--he's beautiful!!

Best MDF yet. The tubing is more flexible on this one--is that how they're making them now? My first one was a bit stiff. I think this one is prettier than he looked online. Sounds lovely, too. (link)

clinamen by celese boursier-mougenot
“clinamen 2013 MDF floor, PVC liner, water pump, heating device, porcelain bowls, water. Paula Cooper Gallery, New York, and Galerie Xippas, Paris. Céleste Boursier-Mougenot is a French artist and composer who creates large-scale acoustic installations and environments which draw upon laws of nature and the rhythms of everyday life to produce new forms of art and music. In clinamen white porcelain bowls float on the surface of an intensely blue pool. Circulating gently, swept along by submarine currents, floating crockery acts as a percussive instrument, creating a resonant, chiming acoustic soundscape marked by complexity, hidden patterns and chance compositions.” - ngv melbourne
‘clinamen’ derives from the term lucretius gave to the unpredictable movement of atoms in epicurean atomism.
“By contrast, in atomism, just such a model of heterogeneity, and of passage or becoming in the heterogeneous, is furnished by the famed declination of the atom. The clinamen, as the minimum angle, has meaning only between a straight line and a curve, the curve and its tangent, and constitutes the original curvature of the movement of the atom. The clinamen is the smallest angle by which an atom deviates from a straight path. It is a passage to the limit, an exhaustion, a paradoxical “exhaustive” model. The same applies to Archimedean geometry, in which the straight line, defined as “the shortest path between two points,” is just a way of defining the length of a curve in a predifferential calculus.” - deleuze and guattari’s nomadology, pg 18
this forms an interesting visual model of how content circulates online - ie. tumblr labs’ graphs of reblogs. it also makes me think of plasma, the fourth state of matter, which my handsome stem friend just taught me is when the atoms are moving so fast, the actual electrons in the atoms become detached from the nuclei and start to predominantly form into charged ions... the high level of ions in plasma make it a very strong electromagnetic force, as in lightning. plasma also creates a lot of radiation, which i should probably learn more about the process of because the wikipage is confusing. most of space, including stars, is made of plasma that is constantly changing its chemical composition due to the extreme heat.. so deleuzian

The saga of the Dura-Craft Farm House FH500, part 1
All the Dura-Craft Farm House posts will be tagged Dollhouse Diaries, so you can avoid them if you like.
Last Sunday, we were at the Save-a-Pet Thrift in Valley Springs, where we saw this enticing box. It's the Dura-Craft Farm House FH500: "So authentic you can almost smell the hay!"
Tumblr media
This is one of my two favorite 1:12 houses, which is reprehensible of me because the window sizing and placement is really not good. Back in 2008, I had bought a completed one, in fixer-upper shape, at an antique store in Phoenix for $60, but a lot happened in 2008, and it did not make some move or other. I'd been thinking that while there was no realistic way anything big from 2008 could have made it to 2024 with me, I wouldn't mind finding another one.
This one was $50. The proprietor of the thrift assured me that the kit is complete. She knew the guy who was trying to build it, and he just ran out of steam because it was complicated. Having built kit dollhouses with Dad over a long weekend, I scoffed. (Spoiler: I'm going to eat my words, unsauced and chewy.)
Obviously, I bought it. (Actually, Dad bought it for me while I protested that I have unspent birthday and Christmas money burning a hole in my wallet, but you get the idea.)
Upon reading the instructions, I found the stamped date when it was boxed up: October 7, 1982.
Tumblr media
Dura-Craft was an Oregon furniture maker that started using scrap lumber for dollhouses in the late 1970s, with its kit production starting around 1978. From about 1978 through the 1980s was a huge boom period for dollhouse kits, with so many more brands and models than there are today. (Furniture variety peaks in the 2000s, though, go figure.)
The pictures on the box thus show some of the earliest Dura-Craft designs. Dad has built the San Franciscan (that's the one he built while Mom was dying, that she never got to put the furniture in, so you can figure we sold that because we couldn't stand the sight of it). I think he has the Southern Mansion kit in the attic, missing one floor piece, but I refuse to build a plantation house. I've never seen the Chateau!
The first step is to assemble the walls, as the walls are not sheets of plywood or MDF, the way most kits have always been. No, the walls are assembled from individual strips of plywood, about three fingers high, with milled siding. This here is three of the wood strips already glue together.
Tumblr media
I am grateful for the milled siding, as dollhouse siding costs a fortune, and all DIY trash-to-treasure substitutes are an incredible amount of work to do. I admire and applaud people who make their own siding from stirring sticks or whatever, but I know I would do poorly at it.
What I'm not grateful for is that the prior builder had assembled the walls with hot glue. Never build a dollhouse shell with hot glue. Don't do it if the instructions say to *cough* Greenleaf *cough*. Definitely don't do it if the instructions say to use wood glue.
Hot glue puts a rubbery, flexible layer between the two surfaces glued together. There is fabulous if you're gluing silk flowers to a hat. It is not fabulous when you have wood that's intended for square, direct joins. The wall sections flap where the joins between strips are rubbery. Some are off-kilter because a rounded line of hot glue doesn't absorb down into the wood the way wood glue does. Many are simply breaking because hot glue ages faster and worse than wood glue.
So every time a join breaks, we have to pick hot glue debris out of the tracks on one side of the wood strip. Dad scrapes at it with a knife. I don't trust myself around sharp instruments, so I alternate between heating it with a microwaved napkin (damp in the center so it doesn't catch fire, but dry on the surface so it doesn't get the wood wet) and picking at it with my fingernails. We have tacitly agreed that we will not attempt to fix every join unless walls refuse to slide into their corner posts, many steps down the road.
Tumblr media
There is a great deal of gluing and clamping involved. We're somewhere between halfway and 2/3 of the way through wall repairs, and I'm hoping we didn't jump the gun in gluing that gable back on.
Meanwhile, the box does come with a clear photo of the interior layout!
Tumblr media
The interior walls are not optional -- every model of this house that I've seen without those walls has severely sagging floors. The floor edges balance on narrow wood sticks that don't give a lot of support.
I need to see how tall the rooms really are before making a firm decision on who gets this house. If ceiling height is reasonable for Arvin Lebec, who's a tall guy at 7", then it's his. If it runs short -- as sometimes happens with older kit houses -- then I may rebuy the couple intended as the original inhabitants the first time I bought this house: the Archie McPhee barista and hipster action figures.
Tomorrow is yet more wall-gluing. So many walls. So, so many walls.

What Is Hemp?
It’s A Trillion Dollar Cash Crop.
youtube
Hemp is a name given to a strain of the cannabis plant.
Hemp is a name given to cultivars of the cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa) that have been selected over many generations for fiber and seed production. Most hemp cultivars contain less than 1.5% THC, a narcotic compound that has the potential for abuse in high concentrations. Cannabis sativa cultivars selected and developed for their drug properties, referred to as marijuana, or dagga, can have a THC content of 3%-25%.  Hemp is a bast fiber, producing its fibers in the stalk similar to flax, kenaf, and sun hemp.
Multiple Uses
Hemp fiber and seed are used to produce a wide range of commodities including food and beverage products, fiberboard, insulation, paper, composites, textiles, carpets, animal bedding and feed, cosmetics, body-care products, soaps, paints, fuels, and medicines.
Hemp Seed Food and Beverage Products
Hemp seed contains about 25% protein, 30% carbohydrates, & 15% insoluble fiber. Hemp seed is reported to contain more easily digestible protein than soybeans. Hemp seed contains all 8 amino acids essential to human nutrition. Hemp seed is high in calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, carotene, sulfur, iron and zinc, as well as Vitamins A, E, C, B1, B2, B3, and B6.
Hemp seed imported into the United States or Canada must be steam sterilized at between 180 degrees F and 212 degrees F for 15 minutes to prevent sprouting. Many US facilities receive imported viable seed under customs bond, steam it, and release it to the consignee or customer with a Certificate of Sterilization.
Hemp food and beverage products include hemp oil and seed, flour, pasta, cheese, tofu, salad dressings, snacks, sweets, hemp protein powders, soft drinks, beer, and wine. Hemp beer can be made from the seed, flowers, sprouts, and seed cake that is a by-product of oil pressing. Hemp beer is produced and sold in Europe and the United States of America.
Hemp Oil
Hemp seed is 25% to 35% oil, and is one of the oils lowest in saturated fats (8%). Hemp seed oil is the richest source of polyunsaturated essential fatty acids (80%). Hemp seed oil is the only common edible seed oil containing Omega-6 Gamma-Linolenic Acid. Hemp seed oil is very fragile and not suitable for cooking.
Pressed hemp seed oil must be bottled immediately under oxygen-free conditions, and must be refrigerated in dark, airtight containers.
Fiberboard
Hemp fiberboard tested by Washington State University Wood Materials and Engineering Laboratory proved to be two and one half times stronger than wood MDF composites, and the hemp composite boards were three times more elastic.
Hemp herds can be used in existing mills without major changes in equipment. Russia, Poland and other Eastern European countries already manufacture composite boards from hemp and other plant materials.
Pulp and Paper
The major use of hemp fiber in Europe is in the production of specialty papers such as cigarette paper, archival paper, tea bags, and currency paper. The average bast fiber pulp and paper mill produces 5,000 tons of paper per year. Most mills process long bast fiber strands, which arrive as bales of cleaned ribbon from per-processing plants located near the cultivation areas.
Composites
Until the 1930’s, hemp-based cellophane, celluloid and other products were common, and Henry Ford used hemp to make car doors and fenders. Today hemp herds can be used to make new plastic and injection-molded products or blended into recycled plastic products. Hemp fibers are introduced into plastics to make them stiffer, stronger and more impact resistant. Hemp plastics can be designed that are hard, dense, and heat resistant, and which can be drilled, ground, milled, and planed.
Hemp plastic products currently made include chairs, boxes, percussion instruments, lampshades, bowls, cups, spectacles, jewelry, skateboards, and snowboards.
Hemp Animal Care
Hemp horse bedding and cat litter are produced and sold in Europe. After oil is extracted from the hemp seed, the remaining seed cake is about 25% protein and makes an excellent feed for chicken, cattle, and fish. Chickens fed hemp seed on a regular basis have been found to produce more eggs, without the added hormones used in most poultry plants.
Fuels
Hemp seed oil can be combined with 15% methanol to create a substitute for diesel fuel which burns 70% cleaner than petroleum diesel. Hemp stalks are rich in fiber and cellulose, making them conducive for conversion into ethanol and methanol fuels that have a higher octane than gasoline and produce less carbon monoxide. These biomass fuels are also free from sulfur, and do not require the addition of lead and benzene used to boost octane and improve engine performance in fossil fuels. Ethanol holds condensation, eliminating oxidation and corrosion, and is reported to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 30%.
Hemp has been studied in Ireland as a biomass fuel to generate electricity. Hemp has been reported to yield 1000 gallons of methanol per acre year. Hemp stalk can be converted to a charcoal-like fuel through a thermochemical process called pyrolysis. Henry Ford operated a biomass pyrolitic plant at Iron Mountain, Michigan in the mid-20th.
Paints and Varnishes and Binders
Until the 1930's, most paints were made from hemp seed oil and flax seed oil. Hemp oil makes a durable, long lasting paint that renders wood water-resistant. Hemp herds have the potential to make glues for composite construction products that are non-toxic and superior to binders currently used. With this technology, industry can produce composite products where all components are derived from hemp.
Markets for Hemp Pulp
Some paper manufacturers already have the equipment to process decorticated hemp fiber into paper. The leading European supplier of non-wood pulp, Celesa, currently produces about 10,000 tons per year of pulp from hemp. The use of hemp pulp in blends with recycled fiber of other non-wood fibers is growing. Tests by several European pulp and paper producers suggest that hemp pulp may replace cotton cost effectively in several specialty paper applications.
Potential Markets for Medical Application of Low-THC Hemp Cultivars
Many cannabis medicines have been produced using cannabis cultivars high in THC, and there has been medical research into cannabis that is low in THC and high in CBD.  CBD is a cannabinoid that does not have many of the psychoactive effects associated with THC.  CBD has been used to treat the following medical conditions: epilepsy, dystonic movement disorders, inflammatory disorders, pain, chronic insomnia, chorea, cerebral palsy, and Tourette's syndrome. According to a July 1998 report by the National Institute of Health, CBD may hold promise for preventing brain damage in strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and even heart attacks and has been found to prevent brain cell death in an experimental stroke model.
Please share this with your friends.

Neutrons See Stress in 3D-printed Parts - Technology Org
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/neutrons-see-stress-in-3d-printed-parts-technology-org/
Neutrons See Stress in 3D-printed Parts - Technology Org
Using neutrons to see the additive manufacturing process at the atomic level, scientists have shown that they can measure strain in a material as it evolves and track how atoms move in response to stress.
The OpeN-AM experimental platform, installed at the VULCAN instrument at ORNL’s Spallation Neutron Source, features a robotic arm that prints layers of molten metal to create complex shapes. This allows scientists to study 3D printed welds microscopically, using neutrons. Credit: Jill Hemman, ORNL/U.S. Dept. of Energy
“The automotive, aerospace, clean energy and tool-and-die industries — any industry that needs complex and high-performance parts — could use additive manufacturing,” said Alex Plotkowski, materials scientist in ORNL’s Materials Science and Technology Division and the lead scientist of the experiment. Plotkowski and his colleagues reported their findings in Nature Communications.
ORNL scientists have developed OpeN-AM, a 3D printing platform that can measure evolving residual stress during manufacturing using the VULCAN beamline at ORNL’s Spallation Neutron Source, or SNS, a Department of Energy Office of Science user facility. When combined with infrared imaging and computer modeling, this system enables unprecedented insight into material behavior during manufacturing.
In this case, they used low-temperature transformation, or LTT, steel, physically measuring how atoms move in response to stress, whether it’s temperature or load, using the OpeN-Am platform.
Alex Plotkowski, ORNL materials scientist. Credit: Carlos Jones/ORNL, U.S. Dept. of Energy
Residual stresses are stresses that remain even after a load or the cause of the stress is removed; they can deform a material or, worse, cause it to fail prematurely. Such stresses are a major challenge for fabricating accurate components with desirable properties and performance.
The scientists conceived and, over the course of two years, produced this experiment that can measure strain in the material as it evolves, which determines how stresses will be distributed.
“Manufacturers will be able to tailor residual stress in their components, increasing their strength, making them lighter and in more complex shapes. The technology can be applied to anything you want to manufacture,” Plotkowski said.
“We have successfully shown that there is a way to do that,” he said. “We are demonstrating we understand connections in one case to anticipate other cases.”
The scientists recently earned a 2023 R&D 100 Award for this technology. R&D World magazine announced the winners in August. Plotkowski and other winners will be recognized at the organization’s award ceremony Nov. 16 in San Diego.
The scientists used a custom wire-arc additive manufacturing platform to perform what’s called operando neutron diffraction of an LTT metal at SNS. Using SNS’s VULCAN beamline, they processed the steel and recorded data at various stages during manufacturing and after cooling to room temperature. They combined diffraction data with infrared imaging to confirm results.
The system was designed and built at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility, or MDF, a DOE Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office user consortium, where a replicate system of the platform was also constructed to plan and test experiments before executing at the beamline.
SNS operates a linear particle accelerator that produces beams of neutrons to study and analyze materials at the atomic scale. The research tool they developed allows scientists to peer inside a material as it’s being produced using neutrons, literally observing the mechanisms at work in real time.
The LTT steel was melted and deposited in layers. As the metal solidified and cooled, its structure transformed in what is called a phase transformation. When that happens, atoms rearrange and take up different space, and the material behaves differently.
Normally, transformations that happen at high temperatures are hard to understand when looking at a material only after processing. By observing the LTT steel during processing, the scientists’ experiment shows that they can understand and manipulate the phase transformation.
“We want to understand what these stresses are, explain how they got there, and figure out how to control them,” Plotkowski said.
“These results provide a new pathway to design desirable residual stress states and property distributions within additive manufacturing components by using process controls to improve nonuniform spatial and temporal variations of thermal gradients around key phase transformation temperatures,” the authors write.
Plotkowski hopes scientists from around the world come to ORNL to do similar experiments on metals they would like to use in manufacturing.
This research was funded by ORNL’s Laboratory Directed Research and Development program, which supports high-risk research and development in areas of potential high value to national programs.
Co-authors include ORNL’s Chris Fancher, James Haley, Ke An, Rangasayee Kannan, Thomas Feldhausen, Yousub Lee, Dunji Yu and Joshua Vaughan; University of Tennessee-ORNL Governor’s Chair Suresh Babu; and former ORNL researchers Kyle Saleeby, Guru Madireddy and C. Leach.
UT-Battelle manages ORNL for DOE’s Office of Science, the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States. DOE’s Office of Science is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. For more information, visit energy.gov/science.

Dainty Subwoofer 10 Inch Price And Technical Specifications Best Subwoofer After JBL, Sony And Pioneer
Tumblr media

What Are Subwoofers?
How Does A Subwoofer Work?
Where Do We Use A Subwoofer?
Dainty Subwoofer 10 Inch Price And Technical Specifications
What Are Subwoofers?
The Question That Arises Before Choosing A Subwoofer For Your Home Theater Or Car Stereo System That What Are Subwoofers, The Answer Is A Subwoofer Is Actually A Speaker Or Loudspeaker, Used To Produce Low-Pitched Frequencies; These Frequencies May Vary From 20 Hz To 200 Hz In Particular.
Those Low-Pitched Frequencies Are Often Called Bass. A Subwoofer Helps Loudspeakers To Enhance Their Low-Frequency Ranges To Produce Quality Sound. Bass Is The Very Low Frequency Produced By Various Musical Instruments, Explosions In A Movie, And Natural Environmental Sound Effects. A Subwoofer Consists Of A Cabinet Or Enclosure Usually Made Up Of Heavy Wood Called MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard), A Driver, Which May Or May Not Be An Amplifier, And A Port Or Vent. A Port Or Vent In The Subwoofer Cabinet Limits Distortion And Unwanted Noises.
The Subwoofer Comes With A Built-In Amplifier Called An Active Subwoofer, And As Such, It Can Utilize No Further External Power Source To Power It. By Contrast, A Subwoofer That Does Not Come With Its Own Amplifier Is Known As A Passive Subwoofer.
A Subwoofer’s Frequency Ranges Typically Range From 20 Hz To 200 Hz. This Range Is Commonly Used For Home Theaters And Car Stereo Speakers. The Frequencies Below 100 Hz Are Used For Specialized Sound Systems. Audio Systems Also Work At Lower Than 80 Hz; These Are Often THX-Approved Systems.
Typically, An Amplifier May Be Required To Be Powered With Up To 1000 Watts Of Dynamic Power, It May Range From 50 To 1000 Watts Depending On The Voltage The Subwoofer Uses. This Subwoofer Needs Low-Pass Frequency Inputs To Work Correctly. The Subwoofer May Have An Impedance Ranging From 4 Ohms To 8 Ohms.
How Does A Subwoofer Work?
The Subwoofers Are Used To Reproduce Low-Pitched Frequencies Using A Bigger Woofer/Driver Which Does The Work Of Pairing With An Amplifier.
When You Connect Your Subwoofer To An Audio Receiver. The Receiver Sends Low-Frequency Effects (LFE) Audio Signals To The Subwoofer Via The Current. The Amplifier Then Treats The Current And Converts It Into Sound Using A Magnetic Voice Coil.
The Magnetic Coil Helps The Cone To Vibrate And Produces High-Quality Deep Or Less Deep Sound. It Depends On The Size Of The Subwoofer And How Much Bass It Would Produce. The Cone Also Has A Dust Cap. This Cap Prevents The Cone From Being Impacted By Dust Particles Entering The Cone’s Area. So That It Can Not Degrade The Performance Of The Subwoofer. By Blending These Sound Signals With Air, Low-Pitched Deep Frequencies Are Reproduced.
Where Do We Use A Subwoofer?
As Many Of You Know Amplifiers And Home Theaters Are Called 2.1, 4.1, 5.1, And 7.1. All The .1 Are Called Subwoofers (Low-Frequency Speakers).
For Example, 2.1 Means 2 Satellite Speakers And One Subwoofer, And 5.1 Mean 5 Satellite Speakers And One Subwoofer. If A Home Theater Comes With 5.2 It Means It Comes With 5 Satellite Speakers And 2 Subwoofers. Subwoofers Are Mainly Used To Hear The Amplifier Or Home Theater Bass Effect To Enjoy The Perfect Movie Or Song Experience. So That Subwoofer Is Available With Plenty Of Brands. So Today In This Article We Going To Read About This Dianty Brand Subwoofer.
As You Already Know This Dainty Brand, This Brand Subwoofer Is Very Rarely Available In The Market Because This Subwoofer Is Imported From China Due To High Demand In The Market. BEST SPEAKER FOR CLASSICAL MUSIC
Introduction-  The best speaker for classical music is a matter of personal opinion and varies according to the sound of the venue. To locate the speakers that best suit your preferences and listening environment, take your time to investigate and contrast several possibilities.
Logitech Z625 Best Computer Speakers For Classical Music
The Logitech Z625 is a 2.1 speaker system, which means it consists of two satellite speakers and a subwoofer. It has a total power output of 200 watts RMS and supports multiple audio inputs, including 3.5mm, RCA, and optical. The inclusion of a dedicated subwoofer can enhance the listening experience by providing deeper bass frequencies, which can be beneficial for some classical music compositions that utilize lower-frequency instruments.
Genius SP-HF1250B V2 Best Vintage Speakers
The Genius SP-HF1250B V2 speakers feature a classic design with wooden cabinets and offer a total power output of 40 watts RMS. They come with a 4-inch woofer and a 1-inch tweeter, which can provide a balanced sound for general listening purposes.
To determine if the Genius SP-HF1250B V2 speakers are the best fit for your vintage audio setup, I recommend reading user reviews and comparisons to gauge their performance and overall value. Additionally, consider auditioning the speakers in person if possible, as listening tests can provide valuable insights into their sound characteristics and suitability for your listening preferences.
Nice boy RAZE Mini Portable Classical Music Speakers
evaluating portable speakers for classical music, consider factors such as sound quality, portability, battery life, and connectivity options. Classical music enthusiasts may prioritize speakers that offer clear and detailed sound reproduction to appreciate the intricacies of classical compositions.
At the top, you will find several mechanical buttons and a strap with a load capacity of 10 kilograms. You can hang the Nice Boy Bluetooth speaker somewhere or just hold it in your hand. Speaker power reaches 5 watts. The bass driver is located on the back.
Acoustic Energy Aegis Neo 3 Best Floor Standing Speaker
The Acoustic Energy Aegis Neo 3 is part of the Aegis Neo series and is known for its well-balanced sound signature, clarity, and detail. It features a 2.5-way design with two dedicated mid/bass drivers and a tweeter, which can deliver a wide frequency response and a spacious soundstage. The build quality and engineering of Acoustic Energy speakers have traditionally been praised by audiophiles.
When evaluating floor-standing speakers, it's essential to consider factors such as sound quality, build construction, room size, and aesthetics. Listening to the speakers in person and comparing them to other models can provide valuable insights into their performance and suitability for different types of music, including classical music.
Canton GLE 490 Best Computer Speakers For Classical Music
The Canton GLE 490 is well-regarded for its audio performance, particularly its clarity, detail, and ability to handle a wide range of frequencies. These qualities are important for classical music, as the genre often features intricate instrumentation and delicate nuances that benefit from accurate sound reproduction.
ELAC FS 68.2 Classical Music Speakers
They are as huge as Canton but designed completely differently. Instead of a dynamic and slightly aggressive look, it looks solid, luxurious, and elegant. They enchanted our model the most during the photoshoot. The baffle is made of 1.2 cm thick MDF boards, the front wall is slightly suspended and provided with a layer of black piano lacquer with a deep gloss. The height changer with silk dome is a cover behind a fine metal mesh, which is not optimal from the acoustical point of view.
Conclusion -
In conclusion, finding the best classical music speaker involves careful consideration of various factors, including sound quality, design, compatibility, and personal preferences. Classical music enthusiasts often seek speakers that can faithfully reproduce the intricate details and nuances of classical compositions, delivering a balanced and immersive listening experience.
While there are several reputable brands and models known for their performance with classical music, the definition of the "best" speaker can be subjective, varying from person to person. Audiophiles and music purists may prefer high-end, specialized speakers that excel in accuracy and fidelity, while others might prioritize affordability and a vintage aesthetic.

last book read + last stethoscope used, part 22
First book and scope pairing of 2024!
Tumblr media
The scope is MDF's Procardial Titanium in green and gold (there's a glitter option for the green but I opted out to save some $ and enjoy a smoother finish on that tubing). The book is John Scalzi's short sci-fi read from last year, Starter Villain. Yes--go ahead and judge a book by its cover...unless you don't like cats, in which case you can keep opinions like that to yourself. These cats can type 80 wpm, btw. Also, there are unionizing dolphins and...underwhelming lava pits. I'd never read anything by this guy before but it was giving Douglas Adams at times and I loved it for that. Nothing deep here, but just enough twists and turns and laughs to make it fun as hell. It was a great read to start out the year.

Top Uses for Mahogany Veneer
Mahogany is a name applied to select members of the genus “Swietenia,” itself a member of the Meliaceae Chinaberry family that is found in the tropics around the world.
Tumblr media
Mahogany trees are found in the Americas and are noteworthy for their beautiful, straight-grained, reddish-brown wood that is extremely dense, strong, and hard. It is also remarkably resistant to moisture, rot, insects, and fungal attack.
These attributes have made mahogany and mahogany veneers very popular for a wide range of uses, including the following.
On Boats: Vessel Paneling and Trim Mahogany is a beautiful wood, to be true, but that fact is secondary in terms of its suitability for use in marine environments.
Mahogany displays exceptional resistance to moisture, rot, and chemical attack, compared with many species of hardwoods. This makes it uniquely suitable for use in marine applications.
It is also resistant to damage incurred from exposure to sunlight, extreme temperatures, and salt.
Musical Instruments Very strong and fairly straight-grained, mahogany veneer also makes an excellent choice for accenting and decorating musical instruments, especially considering the fact that it has such a fine aesthetic allure, too.
Furniture Mahogany veneer is an excellent choice for outfitting furniture made from suitable substrates, such as MDF and other hardwoods.
The use of veneer instead of solid mahogany is not only much more affordable but places less of a strain on the global stock of these prized species.
Wall and Ceiling Paneling Wainscoted and wood-paneled walls and ceilings are beautiful and memorable, but solid wood panels can be prohibitively expensive.
Mahogany veneer sheets offer the option to deliver on the aesthetic appeal of mahogany at a fraction of the cost of solid wood.
Decorative Inlays and Marquetry Decorative inlays - in furniture, in cabinets, and in other ornamentation - do not require exceptional structural integrity or mechanical strength. Marquetry, in which small pieces of wood, often in contrasting colors, are arranged for their decorative intrigue is another similar application.
Inlays and marquetry are there for looks - which is one of the reasons that mahogany veneer is a choice option for decoration, as it is more affordable and much more practical than solid wood.
Why Mahogany Veneer and Not Solid Wood? While solid mahogany might be stronger and more resilient than veneer, the use of mahogany veneer is beneficial for several reasons.
Mahogany veneer is typically much more affordable than solid wood, making it preferable for decorative work.
Moreover, one single tree can produce a large volume of wood veneer, resulting in less of a burden on hardwood stocks around the world.
This latter consideration is key, especially given the fact that mahogany is not only very rare, it is also a vulnerable species threatened by uncontrolled logging and overharvesting.

What is the best type of glue for woodworking?
The best type of glue for woodworking depends on the specific application and materials being used. However, some of the most commonly used glues in woodworking include:
PVA (polyvinyl acetate) glue: This is a water-based glue that is easy to use, dries clear, and has a strong bond. It is suitable for most woodworking applications and can be used on a variety of materials such as wood, MDF, and particleboard.
Hide glue: This is a traditional glue that has been used for centuries in woodworking. It is made from animal hides and is typically used for veneering and musical instrument making. Hide glue dries quickly, is reversible with heat and moisture, and is non-toxic.
Epoxy: Epoxy is a two-part adhesive that has excellent bonding strength and is water-resistant. It is ideal for use in high-stress applications such as bonding joints, filling gaps, and laminating.
Cyanoacrylate (CA) glue: Also known as super glue, CA glue is a fast-drying adhesive that forms a strong bond between materials. It is useful for small repairs, filling gaps, and bonding small pieces of wood like d4 chipboard floor adhesive.
Ultimately, the choice of glue for woodworking will depend on the specific application and requirements. It is important to consider factors such as the type of wood being used, the strength of the bond required, and the environmental conditions that the bond will be exposed to.
