Sunday evening, I open the door to my house and walk in to hear chatter and laughter amongst my housemates. My new home was previously a frat house, but had been renovated to serve as general student housing. There were fifteen separate rooms – one to three people in each room and shared common rooms and a kitchen downstairs. The color schemes of the dining room and living room were atrocious interesting – dark blue walls opposite tan and mustard yellow ones with a series of white trimmed windows. The dining room was paired with dark brown dining room tables, a pool table, and several granite-top bar tables. The living room was no better with oddly color-blocked couches and chairs and an ancient piano that desperately needed to be tuned. The dim yellow lighting throughout the house created a nice atmosphere for relaxing, but was absolutely horrendous for late-night studying. Perhaps the lighting was purposely horrible to make it so dark you couldn’t see how terrible the design choices were. Despite this strange mesh of interior designing, it still managed to create an all-around cozy environment.
The first week of classes had just ended and I was returning from a dinner outing with my former roommate.
As I head towards the spiral staircase, I briefly look to my left to see three boys playing pool and some others doing homework in the main dining room. I recognize one of the boys from our move-in meeting; he was quiet, but had a very soothing voice when he spoke. His name was Ren – Ren-something?
My room has a much simpler design compared to downstairs; grayish walls with the same white trimmed windows as downstairs, a mini-fridge, microwave, and simple wooden furniture staples for two people. Though boring, at least it didn’t give you eye strain.
The light in my room is on when I enter and my new roommate, Jia, is sitting at her desk watching a Chinese reality show and eating dinner.
“Hey!” she greets. “Where did you go?”
“I went to dinner with my roommate from last year,” I say. “What are you eating?”
“I ordered some Chinese food.”
Jia is an international student from Beijing, double-majoring in statistics and business. She came to the U.S. when she was fourteen to attend high school on the east coast. As a result, she’s been quite sheltered, a lack of life experience and hints of naivety evident when you speak to her. Having been sent here for school, she was expected to work hard to get a good education and hopefully, a well-paying job. That’s what her focus has been all her life: jumping academic hoops.
As I place my purse and jacket on my desk, I grab my water bottle and head back downstairs to the kitchen to refill it.
As I step foot into the dining room to get to the kitchen, the three boys shooting pool immediately stop playing and look up at me. I pause upon making eye contact with the boy who caught my eye at our meeting and hesitate for a moment before offering a half smile. He stares at me, remaining expressionless. I quickly look away, regaining enough composure to continue walking towards the entrance to the kitchen. But as soon as I have my back to the three boys, a wave of discomfort pulses through my body. I can’t explain why, or how I even know considering I don’t have eyes on the back of my head, but I can feel that one of them is still watching me as I’m walking away – and it’s not the one from the meeting.
When I reach the water dispenser, I shake my head in dismissal, attributing the sudden feeling of discomfort to a figment of my imagination. You couldn’t even see him. They just looked at you because you entered the room. That’s all.
When my water bottle is half full, I hear the three of them walk into the kitchen and begin pulling out several pans and other kitchenware out of the cabinets next to the stove. The water dispenser is on the other side of the kitchen, so I keep my back to the them, but am unable to shake the feeling of the one that was standing next to the shy boy with the nice voice. I quietly huff in frustration. Why do I keep feeling like he was looking at me? Does he… think I’m attractive? Hyojin did say I get looked at a lot when we hang out together. Maybe I’ll talk to him.
The three of them start cooking, walking back and forth between the stove and the sink that’s several feet away from me. While screwing the cap back onto my bottle, I turn around and immediately lock eyes with the boy in question as he walks towards me. He stares at me for several more moments before breaking eye contact and bringing his gaze back towards the ground.
My eyes narrow. Okay, that was kind of weird.
I walk over to the large refrigerator in the middle of the kitchen, reaching into my reusable grocery bag sitting on the second shelf to pull out an apple before heading over to the sink to wash it.
A moment later, the boy with the nice voice walks up next to me to wash a pot. I take a step to my right to give him more space, grabbing a paper towel from the dispenser and wrapping it around my apple. I continue to stand there awkwardly, over-drying the fruit while contemplating on whether or not I should introduce myself.
I decide to bite the bullet.
“What’s your name?” I ask.
“Renjun. What’s yours?”
“Y/N.”
There’s a momentary pause, the sound of running water filling what could have been a very awkward silence. Renjun keeps his focus on the pot.
“What’s your major?” he asks.
“Uh, biology. Yours?”
“CS and math.”
His responses are very quiet. Even in tone. Emotionless. I look at him as he rinses the soap off of the pot and his face remains expressionless. Do you ever smile?
“Oh, nice,” I remark. God, even I’m boring.
“Where are you from?” he asks.
“Oregon,” I reply.
“Portland?” asks another voice.
I flip around and see that the boy who had just stared at me is standing in the middle of the kitchen with a polite smile on his face.
“Medford!” I say.
Huh! You were listening to our conversation…
I’m a bit dumbfounded when he nods and walks back over to the third boy standing at the stove, wondering why he didn’t continue to talk to me considering he was clearly interested enough to listen in on my conversation with Renjun.
My eyes flicker over to the wooden dining table near the window, a collection of bright colors having caught my eye. Coupon books. Maybe Suji will want one of these. She has a whole stash of them in her desk.
I take out my phone and look around briefly to make sure no one is watching particularly the weird staring boy while I snap a photo of the coupon book to text to Suji to see if she’s interested. While waiting for her response, I grab one of the coupon books and flip through it to see if there’s anything in particular she might want.
Pizza, ice cream, sandwiches, dentist…
I place the book back on the table and look up as the boy walks towards me; he’s staring at me again.
Opportunity has arrived.
I look back at him, briefly narrowing my eyes in curiosity. “What’s your name?” I ask, completely skipping the formalities.
“Jaemin!” he says as his eyes shoot open in surprise. “And you?”
“Y/N.”
“Well it’s nice to meet you, Y/N,” he says with a smile.
I smile back at him.
“Um –” he tilts his head and looks at me thoughtfully “– why were you taking pictures of the coupon book?”
Shit. Someone was watching me. I specifically checked to make sure no one was, especially YOU.
I chuckle nervously. “Oh, uh, I didn’t think anyone was watching,” I murmur to myself. “I was sending a picture to see if my friend wanted one.”
“Oh!” he remarks. “I thought you were taking pictures to try and save paper or something. Like why not just take one?”
“Oh, no.” I bite the inside of my lip before smiling out of embarrassment. “Yeah, I was seeing if there was anything my friend might want.”
I guess I’m not imagining anything. You are, in fact, watching me.
“Ah.” He gives me an understanding nod, quickly choosing to move onto another subject. “So what’s your major?” he asks.
“Biology. How about you?”
“EECS.”
“Oh, nice.”
He looks at me quizzically, apparently surprised by my lack of being impressed. Most people were fascinated when they met an EECS (electrical engineering, computer science) major as that was the hardest major to be accepted into at the university. It was also one of the most rigorous majors, which led to an onslaught of jokes about EECS students only showering once a month and being too nerdy to get into a relationship.
“Yeah, you always wonder what people’s responses will be, you know?”
“Yeah…” I say slowly, offering a courteous smile that doesn’t fully reach my eyes.
I’m guessing he wasn’t satisfied that I don’t seem impressed.
“Are you pre-med?” he asks.
My eyes widen in horror. “Oh dear, no.”
“So what do you plan on doing?”
“Research. I never wanted to go to medical school.”
“Huh, interesting. Why?”
“I don’t like blood.” I crinkle my nose. “I also don’t really feel like being in school forever. Granted, I have to go to grad school and will be in school forever anyway.”
“True.” He chuckles. “So what do you think of this place?” he asks, referring to the house.
“I actually really like it!” I grin at him. “Despite the questionable design choices, I like it. It’s quiet.”
“Yeah, it’s quiet, but I think it’s kinda… antisocial.”
“True.” I shrug. “I don’t know, it kinda works for me. If I want to talk to people, I can. If I don’t, I can do that too. I don’t talk to that many people… not the friendliest person,” I say with a small smile.
He looks at me skeptically. “You seem pretty friendly to me.”
“Depends on who I’m with,” I reply with a shrug.
“Ah, yeah, oh –” He quickly turns his head towards Renjun, suddenly realizing that he hadn’t been helping out his roommates with their dinner preparations. “Hey, Renjun, do you need help?”
“No, it’s fine,” Renjun curtly responds.
He nods once and turns back to me. “So what are your plans for the rest of the night?”
“Uh, probably just catch up on some work.”
“You’re so productive.”
“I’m trying to keep up with everything to do better this semester.” I frown. “But the problem is that I’m really bad at physics.”
“Oh, I’m taking physics too!”
“Are you in the one specifically for engineers?”
“Yes.”
“Oh, okay,” I reply. “I’m in the other one. I’m just frustrated because we’re doing kinematics and I used to be really good at it in high school and now it’s like I’ve completely forgotten how to do it.”
“That’s what happened to me with circuits. I did it in high school, but I can’t seem to do it anymore.”
I smile at him, unsure of what to say as he leans in towards me, putting his weight on the back of a kitchen chair.
“I could probably help you with physics sometime,” he offers.
Oh! Well that’s nice of him. I could use the help.
However, there’s an… unsettling feeling in my chest. Suspicion – that’s what it is. Suspicion that this isn’t just a friendly offer for help.
“That would be very helpful! Thank you!” I respond, trying to keep my tone even to avoid giving away my intuition.
“Do you just do work in your room?”
“Uh, sometimes. I hate the chairs we have in the room, so I normally just work on my bed or I go downstairs to the piano room.”
“Ah, yeah. I should probably go downstairs or something because I don’t get anything done in my room.”
I pause for a moment, contemplating on whether or not to say my next immediate thought. My goal for this year was to make new friends and I had begun to develop a habit of offering open invitations for people to spend time with me. In a split second decision, I reasoned that this was no different. It’s not like I was interested in the guy. It’s also somewhat of a personal experiment to see if my intuition is correct: that he actually is interested and would take up my offer.
“Well, if you want company, I’m almost always in the piano room! I usually go down there because if I work in my room, I just watch TV,” I say.
“Oh, what do movies do you watch?”
“I actually watch television shows, but I’ve been watching the Justice League until my shows come back.”
“And what shows are those?”
“Uh, NCIS, Castle, The Blacklist, and The Flash.”
“Oh. So superheroes, some mystery and action.” He nods in approval. “Those are shows I’d be into if I watched them.”
“Oh nice! Yeah, it’s pretty easy to get distracted and just watch in my room. It’s very relaxing.”
“Well, it’s quiet.” A smirk forms on his face. “So it fits with your personality, right?”
The corner of my mouth raises in amusement. “Right.”
I take a good look at him. Jaemin is tall, relatively slim, and fairly attractive. Though, it’s interesting. He looks young and innocent, but there’s something about his eyes. They’re playful, but there’s mischief behind that playfulness. He’s quite charming and that look in his eyes is enough to tell you that he knows it too.
“Which room are you in?” he asks.
“202.”
“Oh, I think that’s down the hall from me. I’m in 206. But yeah, whenever you need help, just –” he makes a weird gesture with his hands “– knock on the door.”
I nod, but a thought crosses my mind. “Actually –” I pull out my phone from my back pocket and hand it to him “– why don’t I just get your number? Then I can just text you and won’t have to worry about bothering your roommates.”
“Hey, Jaemin.” Renjun places a plate of food on the table. “This is yours.”
Jaemin gives me back my phone and smiles at me. “All right, well, I’m gonna go eat dinner. It was nice meeting you!”
“Yeah, you too!”
I take a bite into my apple and walk outside to sit on the porch, dialing my dad’s number for our nightly call.
“Hello?”
“Hi,” I sing. “So I met this guy. His name is Jaemin and he seems pretty friendly.” I click my tongue. “Though, I got this weird feeling that he thinks I’m cute or something because… he kept staring at me and then later he offered to help me with physics.”
“What’s his major?”
“EECS.”
“Are you interested in him?”
“No,” I say. “He’s cute, but he’s not really my type. It was really weird though because I walked into the dining room when he and his roommates were playing pool and they all stopped playing as soon as I walked in and watched me until I left.”
“Are you going to take him up on his offer to help you with physics?”
“Yeah, probably. I actually do need help.”
“It’s nice of him to offer, but he probably does have something for you.”
“Why do you say that?”
“Guys don’t just offer to help you in physics if they’re not interested.”
I chortle at my dad’s response and with a slight hint of sarcasm, respond with, “Are you sure? You don’t think he’s just being nice?”
He scoffs. “Nice? Uh-uh, sorry, I don’t think so.”
I continue giggling when he asks if I’m going to work downstairs tonight.
“Yeah, later after I clean up a bit. I told him I’m usually downstairs so I guess we’ll see if he shows up.”
Tumblr media
When I arrive downstairs, laptop and books in hand, both of the work tables have been claimed by other residents. I turn to my right, figuring I’ll work at the coffee table instead. To my surprise, Jaemin is sitting on the couch, hunching over his laptop and a notebook he placed on the coffee table. There’s a flash of amusement in my eyes, but I bite back a smirk when Jaemin looks up and waves.
Well, well, well, what do we have here? Looks like the personal experiment has given us some confirmation…
To say I didn’t feel a sense of satisfaction from Jaemin actually taking up my offer within a matter of a few hours would have been a lie. It’s flattering.
I walk over to where he is and set my things down before sitting on the floor across from him. “Hey.”
“Hi,” he greets. “Doing work?”
“Yeah, I’m going to the marina with my roommate tomorrow so I need to finish up some things before Tuesday.”
While waiting for my laptop to boot, I grab my phone to send a text.
Me to Dad [8:56 PM] Guess who came downstairs?
Dad [9:00 PM] Does that mean he’s interested? 😉
Me [9:01 PM] I guess so?
“I think you have the right idea,” a voice says.
“What?” I ask, looking up at Jaemin in curiosity.
“Sitting on the floor,” he replies as he starts moving from the couch to the floor.
I open an internet browser and habitually log into Facebook instead of my physics homework assignment. There’s a message notification from Hyojin regarding some video she saw.
“Hey, Jaemin!” Renjun’s voice calls from the doorway. “Want one?”
“Oh sure!” Jaemin stands up and begins walking over to Renjun. I hear a loud smack when Jaemin catches something with a plastic wrapper. “Thanks!”
As I type a response back to Hyojin, a teasing voice elicits an embarrassed smile from me for the second time that night.
“That’s not studying.”
I look up at Jaemin as he glances down at me. A playful smirk has formed on his face, bringing back that mischief in his eyes.
“Want some?” he asks, holding up a small bag of chips.
“No, thanks.”
There’s a comfortable silence between us as we complete our individual assignments. I seemed to be having an easier time making acquaintances this year. The first week of school, I had made a personal goal to talk to five new people every day and I am happy to say I achieved it. I was learning to take the initiative with introductions and with the couple people who introduced themselves to me first, I realized that everyone is just as afraid as I am to talk to someone. But really, it’s not a big deal. No one thinks you’re weird. Unless you start your interactions by shamelessly staring at them like Jaemin. Mark will definitely be interested in hearing about this.
I huff in frustration as I fail to obtain the correct answer to my physics problem for the second time. I had three chances; so I needed to get it right this time.
“Hey, Jaemin?” I call.
When I look up, I meet Jaemin’s gaze. He’s staring at me with a blank expression, as if he’s in some kind of trance. It’s unsettling to a degree – the way he’s looking into my eyes, like he’s trying to read me with a precision equivalent to breaking down the walls of my mind and learning every secret that’s behind them without any difficulty.
Um… I tilt my head and narrow my eyes at him. “Jaemin?”
“Hmm?” His eyes widen and he shakes his head as if I’ve pulled him from some reverie. “Sorry, what’s up?”
“Is there –” I press my fingertips against my cheek “– is there something on my face?
“What?” His voice is a tad loud. “No, no! I – I just zoned out for a second.”
Right…
“Uh huh…” I remark skeptically. “Um, can you help me with this physics problem?”
“Yeah, of course!”
I flip my laptop around for him to read the question. A small smirk creeps up on my lips as I watch him scribble equations into his notebook. I feel so smug.
Oh, you definitely think I’m cute and you’re not even trying to hide it. Mark is definitely gonna want to hear all about this.

The Best Books of 2019
I made an effort to read more books in 2019 and mostly succeeded (I think). But there are so many good books out there I couldn't get to, which is at once both panic-inducing (OMG, the endless bedside stack of books) and exciting (so much to look forward to reading). It's in this spirit that I went through a bunch of end-of-the-year books lists to pull out some of our collective favorite books of the year for 2019.
The NY Times has published two lists so far: The 10 Best Books of 2019 and 100 Notable Books of 2019 (I think their critics' picks are forthcoming). Ben Lerner's third novel, The Topeka School, is on both lists and almost all of the others linked here as well. I read Lerner's 10:04 a few years ago and really enjoyed it. Ibram X. Kendi's How to Be an Antiracist made the longer list and is on my to-read-soon list as well.
As many others did, The Times Literary Supplement recommended The Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming by David Wallace-Wells.
On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong made the Washington Post's Best Books of 2019. I pick up Vuong's book every time I see it on a bookstore shelf...one of these days I'm going to actually buy & read it.
Book Riot's list of the Best Books of 2019 includes Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle by Emily Nagoski & Amelia Nagoski. Their talk at XOXO 2019 about the stress cycle was my favorite -- it seemed at times they were talking directly at me.
In their Best Books of 2019 list, Kirkus Reviews highlighted Exhalation by Ted Chiang and Internment by Samira Ahmed.
Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Nobel Prize winner Olga Tokarczuk is on Time magazine's 10 Best Fiction Books of 2019 list.
Library Journal has a number of lists in many categories -- Chris Ware's Rusty Brown and Mira Jacob's Good Talk appear on their graphic novels list.
The lists from Goodreads always present a broader view of what's being enjoyed by readers. See for instance: Most Popular Books Published In 2019 and Best Books of 2019. On the list of books for kids are Sulwe by Lupita Nyong'o and Yoon Ha Lee's Dragon Pearl.
Three Women by Lisa Taddeo and Taffy Brodessner-Aker's Fleishman Is in Trouble both made the New York Public Library's list of Best Books of 2019.
Two lists from Five Books: Best Science Books of 2019 and Best Math Books of 2019. Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men by Caroline Criado Perez topped the first list and Infinite Powers: The Story of Calculus by Steven Strogatz made both lists. I wrote about Perez's book back in February.
The Guardian selected the best science, nature and ideas books of 2019. Among those mentioned are Greta Thunberg's No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference (which oddly didn't make many other lists) and The Age of Surveillance Capitalism by Shoshana Zuboff.
The Guardian also asked a number of writers and celebs for their 2019 favorites. Hilary Mantel highlighted Olive, Again by Elizabeth Strout, comparing the author favorably with Jane Austen. Anand Giridharadas picked Jia Tolentino's Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self-Delusion, the only book on any of these lists in which I am quoted (as far as I know). Yotam Ottolenghi liked The Whole Fish Cookbook by Josh Niland.
Speaking of cooking, I couldn't find a good list of the year's best cookbooks, but I'll update this if Eater or someone else publishes one.
The top two books on Amazon's Best Books of 2019 list are The Testaments by Margaret Atwood and The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead. I haven't gotten around to Whitehead's latest (The Underground Railroad was great) but I did read The Testaments and loved it.
Voracious reader Tyler Cowen weighs in with two lists: favorite fiction of 2019 and best non-fiction books of 2019. He mentions Sally Rooney's Normal People, which I really enjoyed, and Lakota America: A New History of Indigenous Power by Pekka Hämäläinen.

First meeting
Yeah, it definitely didn't go as planned XD
For context - Matheli and Jia first met during the Little Ala Mhigo part of the ARR msq, when Matheli went around the settlement asking about "suspicious masked men". And Jia, being a typical Ala Mhigan from that settlement, wasn't fond of outsiders wandering around their home, and was quite hostile towards Matheli. That hostility only started to fade bit by bit when Jia teamed up with the remaining Scions after the Garlean attack on the Waking Sands.

FFXIV Polyamory Week 2024: Day 1 - Sleeping positions
All three of them sleeping together doesn't happen very often, and when it does, the most common sleeping position is the Matheli sandwich :)
Thank you @fairygodpiggy for showing me that Merlwyb mod :D

Choi Jisu.
Interestingly, I don’t actually know Jisu personally. I only know of her. She’s a year older than me and I only recognize her because she was dating an upperclassman from my high school when he became a student here. She was always tagging him in their photos together.
I scoff. No wonder I hadn’t been seeing those lately. She has a new man. I sigh. Small world.
I select her profile and begin clicking through her viewable photos. Jisu is an avid photo taker – and not the artistic kind. She’s the kind that clearly demonstrates the need to post about everything she does for social, and ultimately, external validation – as illustrated by her endless number of publicly available photo albums, allowing me to quickly discover that she participates in beauty pageants… and wins.
And as I juggle all that information, it starts to make sense. She’s used to being the center of attention. In fact, she likes being the center of attention and being treated like she’s important, hence her behavior regarding Jaemin opening the door for her. She has “high maintenance” written all over her.
As I continue browsing through her photos, I notice that all of the pictures she had with the guy from my high school are gone. Jisu clearly likes publicizing all of her relationships while she’s in them… and then quickly deleting any evidence of them as soon as they’re over as if they never even happened.
Wouldn’t that bother her? Having all 700 of her Facebook friends be able to pinpoint when she started a new relationship and with whom. One boyfriend after another – someone who clearly has difficulties being alone. It’s common for a lot of people, but why would you want everyone to know?
Her second most recent album that’s titled “Third Year – Summer” is where I find the photos of relevance – the photos showcasing her new and blooming romance with Jaemin. Most of them are pretty standard: dinner outings and various dates to the park and ice cream parlor.
My nostrils flare as I glare at the screen. That scumbag. Blatantly flirting with me when he has a girlfriend that he has conveniently left out of every conversation we’ve ever had!
I don’t know what to do with this information.
Wow, Jaemin! You probably thought you were so slick – and I’ll admit, you had me there for a second! But you made the mistake of bringing her home and coincidentally, I happen to know her. That last bit isn’t your fault, but really, what are the chances in a school with thousands of people?
I am not okay with this! We’ve already had an experience of a guy with a girlfriend flirting with me and it didn’t end well!
Am I just supposed to back off? But I didn’t do anything. I’m not even supposed to know anything!
I huff in irritation. I genuinely need help in physics and Jaemin has been quite helpful the last couple times I asked him. I conclude that I have two options: continue what I’ve been doing and act like I know nothing or find a new physics tutor.
The first option is purely convenient since he lives right down the hall and I know he can help, but it tests my moral conscience. The second option is more work on my part because I’d have to go through the tedious task of finding a new person and determining whether or not they’re any good.
But then I ask myself another question: am I actually doing anything wrong? I’m not the one who’s flirting. I can’t control how he acts around me. I’m not even supposed to know about this… but my conscience reminds me that I unfortunately do know about this.
Goddamn. Why’d I have to be home at this time?
Screw my conscience, I need help. My grade is more important and the flirting is kind of flattering.
And that’s the thing about the supposed “ignorance is bliss”: it can be taken away from you at any time, without your consent.

Hydroxyl groups are alcohols including methanol, ethanol, etc. They are polar and can form hydrogen bonds. Have the ability to assist in dissolving compounds such as sugars.
A carbonyl group is a carbon atom connected to an oxygen atom via a double bond.
I roll my eyes and chuck my highlighter to the side, sighing in annoyance as I look around the empty dining room. I’m so lame. It’s Friday night and I’m sitting at home studying.
Despite having adjusted a bit better at the beginning of my second year, I still haven’t made many friends that I can hang out with. The “friends” I have are mostly acquaintances – classmates that I could contact if I ever need anything for class. That’s why I was quite thrilled that Jaemin seemed pretty cool and that he actually liked spending time with me. But I’m not sure how I feel about this new revelation. Based on the superficial facts, I have qualms to pick with his moral compass.
So I started contemplating other housemates I was interested in getting to know – people I could come home to and hang out with in the common rooms. Jaemin’s other roommate – Jeno – seemed worth speaking to. Renjun is polite, but he’s built a nearly impenetrable wall to his friendship. Perhaps he’s just more comfortable with guys.
I turn my head when Jeno walks into the dining room. We make eye contact for several seconds before he turns away and continues into the kitchen. That’s how it always is with him. He’s always expressionless when he looks at me, but his eyes appear to betray him with that lingering glance that tells me he knows something.
I hear the opening of cabinets, the clanging of pots and pans followed by the stove fan being turned on.
I don’t know what’s so scary about going up to new people – like you’re constantly afraid of being judged for talking to them. I know they don’t care, but this feels different considering Jeno and I have seen each other many times, never acknowledging each other, just… staring.
Jeno? He’s nice. You should introduce yourself to him!
Jaemin’s encouraging words convince me to get up from my seat and walk into the kitchen. Jeno is standing in front of the stove, cutting vegetables. Slowly, I walk up to him, tilting my head and peering up at him. He jumps a bit when he turns around, startled by my sudden appearance.
“Hi,” I say with a smile. “Um, you’re Jaemin’s roommate, right?”
“Yeah!” He returns a wide grin. “I’m Jeno.”
“Hi, I’m Y/N.”
He extends his hand out to me, barely gripping my hand – almost as if he’s afraid he’ll break it – and lightly shaking it up and down.
“Jaemin told me you’re a chemistry major?”
“Yeah, how about you?”
“Biology.”
We proceed to ask each other the standard series of questions: Where are you from? What classes are you taking this semester? Are you part of any clubs?
And of course, I always mention my struggles with physics because I’m half hoping he’ll have another suggestion in case I decide I want to jump the Jaemin-ship.
“Oh yeah, I took physics last semester,” he responds. “It was terrible because I hate math so I’m taking a break this semester. You should ask Jaemin for help. He’s much better at it than me.”
Goddammit.
“Yeah, I’ve been asking him for help. He’s been helpful…”
A silence passes between us and when I look up at Jeno again, he has this weird look on his face. The corner of his mouth is upturned and his eyes are – well, they look like they’re undressing me. And then I realize that it’s nearly identical to that mischievous look Jaemin has.
Good Lord, do all three of you have the same look?
Actually, you know what? I don’t want to find out.
“I’ll let you get back to cooking,” I say, abruptly heading towards the door. “It was nice meeting you.”
Tumblr media
“What were you doing?” Jia asks when I return to our room towards the end of Saturday night.
“I was doing my physics problem set and studying for the bio midterm next week.”
“Ooh,” she coos suggestively. “Were you with Jaemin?”
“No. He’s going to help me tomorrow because went to a football game tonight.”
Hmm… I bet Jisu was there with him.
There’s a stupid grin on her face when I turn to look at her. “Do you like him?”
“No.”
“Really? You guys look like you get along really well.”
“Yeah, he’s fun to hang out with.”
“But you don’t like him?”
“No.”
“But –”
Thankfully Jia’s laptop starts ringing. Her parents are calling her from Beijing. I excuse myself, grabbing my laptop, phone, and water bottle to sit in the little inlet in the hallway until she gets off her call.
I know she suspects something and her inexperience with boys is what naturally makes her curious. According to her, she’s never had a crush on anyone. Not sure I totally believe that. And she’s not aware of anyone who has ever had a crush on her. Actually, she’s never had any guy friends and had once asked me how you communicate with them, her tone almost implying that they were an alien species. Like I said, she’s been quite sheltered most of her life. So she’s slowly learning things. I only wish I wouldn’t have to be the one she asks to tell her what a blowjob is.
When I left my room, I noticed that Jaemin’s door was cracked open. Actually, it’s always cracked open like that. And normally, it’s quiet, but tonight, I quickly learn, is a much different story.
“My girlfriend fucked up the pizza,” Jaemin says disdainfully.
So she was at the game…
“How do you fuck up pizza?” Jeno asks.
“She got cheddar pizza.”
“Cheddar pizza?”
“It doesn’t taste bad.” I hear the microwave door slam. “But it still tastes kinda weird. She also gave me a bunch of coupons.”
“For what?” Jeno asks.
“This one says ‘fifteen minutes of oral.’”
I nearly spit out my water. The hell?
“Fifteen minutes?!” Jeno responds in disbelief. “Can you even last fifteen minutes?!”
“Shut up!”
“Wait, maybe you can see if it can be fifteen minutes total,” Renjun says. “So if it takes you ten times to get to the fifteen –”
“You fucking –”
The rest of Jaemin’s crude response is muffled due to a loud crash. I imagine he threw something at Renjun given that Renjun and Jeno are uncontrollably laughing and I have to cover my mouth to prevent myself from laughing out loud.
“But yeah,” Jaemin continues. “She gives me these coupons like, ‘You win this fight,’ ‘I won’t get mad when you fall asleep on me,’ ‘I won’t complain when you say you say you want to hang out with your guy friends’ –”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” Jeno interrupts. “She won’t complain when you say you want to hang out with your guy friends? Isn’t that sorta… shouldn’t that be a given?”
There’s a look of horror on my face as I process what I’ve just heard. Jisu sounds… let’s just say I would not want to be dating her.
“Exactly! She’s crazy!” Jaemin exclaims. “If I spend more time with her, I get more of these things and they’re kind of useful. But I don’t want to spend more time with her…”
“I didn’t really talk to her at the game, but she didn’t seem like she was enjoying it much,” Jeno says.
I purse my lips and run my tongue along my front teeth, completely stunned and quite frankly, somewhat amused that I happened to be out here at the time they were discussing this.
Wow, Jaemin, that sounds like a really secure relationship. Congratulations. If you hate her so much, why are you even dating – oh – the fifteen minutes…
All of these revelations were a disappointing confirmation. First, Jaemin actually does have a girlfriend. He said the G word himself. Second, Jisu is just as high maintenance as I had been able to analyze from her photos. And third, Jaemin is a liar! Well, actually, he hasn’t lied to me. He’s just conveniently left things out.
The alarm bells in my head have started ringing off the hook. At first, they were just there in the background, an occasional beep to warn of a possible danger. But I think now is safe to say that he’s a flirt – and he’s good at hiding it. That’s what makes him so dangerous.
Tumblr media
The next afternoon after meeting with Jaemin, I had scheduled a call with Mark. We finally managed to figure out a time that worked for both of us and I had insisted that it was quite important. I was quite irked as I had actually confirmed that third assumption from last night.
I walk up the stairs shortly before my call time, taking note of Jaemin’s door slightly ajar again. As I near my door, I pause when I hear Renjun’s voice.
“Where’s Jaemin?”
“I think he’s out with –”
Dammit. Did he say Jisu?
“Again?”
“Yeah, he hasn’t been very happy lately,” Jeno responds.
“He should just break up with her,” Renjun says.
I continue onto my room, trying to make my footsteps almost silent to make sure they don’t suspect anyone is listening to them, but I nearly drop my things after hearing Renjun’s next question.
“Do you know anything about Y/N?”
“I talked to her once. She’s nice. I think Jaemin likes her though. She’s pretty attractive.”
“Do you think she knows about –?”
“I don’t know –
Suddenly, I hear someone coming up the stairs and shortly thereafter, one of my neighbors rounds the corner. I make eye contact with her, realizing how weird it is for me to be standing in the middle of the hallway. Quickly, I begin acting like I’m shifting my things into one arm in an attempt to grab my keys.
– Probably not. Jaemin never brings her here.”
“Hey, Y/N!” she greets.
Fuck.
“Hi…”
I turn away quickly, tapping the key fob against my door and run inside.
Tumblr media
“No, Mark, I’m serious! He has a girlfriend!”
“How’d you find out?”
I relay to him my story from last week – walking by Jaemin’s room and overhearing Jisu by happenstance, strategizing my method of figuring out who she was, the Facebook discovery, the coupons…
“And he’s been flirting with you like that? And spending three plus hours with you helping you do your homework?” he asks in disbelief. “Yo, Y/N, this guy sounds like trash.”
“He was helping me with physics today and I asked him who he went to the football game with and he said he only went with his roommates. He lied straight through his teeth!”
“I mean, it’s not like he’d actually tell you. He hasn’t told you before.”
“I kept trying to ask him some questions that would easily allow him to say something about it, but he never did.” I purse my lips. “He’s not stupid though. He probably knew I was fishing for information.”
“Wait, wait, wait, I have another question, Y/N. Who gives coupons like that?!”
“Uh… an insecure person?”
Mark lets out a loud sigh. “I mean – I – I can understand giving out coupons for like… a massage or to cook their favorite dinner. You know? Something cute like that. But these are just weird.”
Clicking my tongue, I respond, “Yeah, that was my conclusion. He doesn’t seem to like her very much though. Not sure why he doesn’t just break up with her.”
“Yo, he’s probably scared.”
“I was just hoping that you wouldn’t also confirm that he sounds like trash.”
“Why? Do you like him?”
“No, I’m not interested in dating him. I think he’s fun to hang around and I want to be his friend, but I feel like that’ll be kinda complicated.”
“Do you know what his girlfriend is like?”
“Only from what I’ve seen and overheard. She sounds –” I scrunch my face is displeasure “– high maintenance. She does beauty pageants… and wins.”
“So she’s pretty,” he concludes.
“Yeah, she’s pretty. I don’t really know why he’s interested me if he’s dating this pageant girl.”
“What are you talking about? Y/N, have you looked in a mirror? You’re really pretty,” he says. “And I’m not just saying that because I’m your friend.”
I’m thankful that Mark can’t see my expression since we’re talking on the phone.
“I met his roommate the other day. I don’t – I don’t know how I feel about him. He was looking at me like he was undressing me.”
“See! I told you!”
“But Mark, he’s a college guy. He’s probably interested in sleeping with any girl that’s at least a seven and is okay with ‘no strings attached.’”
Mark is silent for a moment.
“Y/N?”
“What?”
“You know that you just admitted that you’re at least a seven, right?”
“…your point?”
“I’m just saying! Anyway, you know that there’s only one reason why Jaemin wouldn’t tell you he has a girlfriend, right?”
I have a feeling I know what the reason is, but I entertain Mark’s question.
“What’s that?”
“That he’s looking for someone else… someone else meaning you.”
