Cassandro Review- A Solid Indie Biopic with a Good Performance from Gael Garcia Bernal
Over the years there have been several films about wrestling, the one that comes to mind for me is The Wrestler starring Mickey Rourke. There have also been a lot of documentaries about wrestlers like The Dark Side of the Ring which deals with three ex-professional wrestlers and their Demons in and out of the Ring. A few years back Florence Pugh starred in Fighting With My Family which was about…

'The Equalizer 3' - The Best of the Trilogy
The first two “Equalizer” movies directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Denzel Washington were effective action flicks, but much of what happened in them did not stay in my brain for very long. The most I can remember is that Denzel played Robert McCall who, when he starts the timer on his digital watch, is gifted at leaving his opponents in a world of immense pain in about five seconds’ time.…

The Mosley Review: The Equalizer 3
Tumblr media
Very seldom do film trilogies realize what type of genre they belong to and stick with it. The standard is to go big in the sequel and by the third film, pull out all the stops and have a major blast of a send off. Its a common downfall for trilogies that aren’t designed for that to do make that mistake. Its extremely rare for a franchise to circle back around to what made the first film fantastic and scale back down to a slower, smaller and more personal story. That is what this film did and it was a refreshing return of an almost forgotten style of storytelling. What I loved is the build up to the action and how precise it still was with every movement of the camera and brutal yet efficient execution the titular character dealt. The story itself isn't as earth shattering or epic as most would expect and that was its strong suit. It may come off familiar and stereotypical in many ways, but that didn't stop the film from being fun and exciting. The action in the film was great and I loved the cause and effect approach that most action have films have forgotten how to achieve. There is a reason for the carnage and doesn't have to involve a massive body count by the end.
Tumblr media
Denzel Washington returns as the franchise hero Robert McCall and he hasn't skipped a beat. He is still that secretive, clean and precise avenger we all love but this time we get to see something that I want more characters to have. In this film, the actions of his life catch up to him and makes him come to grips with his vitality. I loved that for once he is actually looking for a peaceful life away from the world. It was a beautiful and warm ending for Robert that ties directly back to the first film. Dakota Fanning joins the franchise as CIA analyst Emma Collins and she was fantastic. The instant chemistry between her and Robert was awesome and wholesome. I liked her willingness to get into the investigative side of her job as this was her first major case. As a side note, its almost been 20 years since Denzel and Dakota have been on screen together and that chemistry and friendship is felt the moment they’re on screen together. David Denman was good as her CIA Operative partner Frank Conroy even if he's there just to showcase the international gravity of the situation and drive the exposition of the story forward. Remo Girone was great and loveable as Enzo Arisio. He really brings out the warmer side of Robert that I don't think he's seen in a long time and helps him appreciate the meaning of peace. Eugenio Mastrandrea was good as the town Marshal Gio Bonucci. He gets put through the ringer in the film and I loved that he never faltered. Andrea Dodero was great as your typical small time gangster Marco Quaranta. He is instantly despicable and its a testament to his excellent acting. Andrea Scarduzio was awesome and venomous as his older brother Vincent. I loved his vicious nature and his intensity once Robert comes on to his radar. The payoff in the conflict between was so satisfying and personal.
Tumblr media
Marcelo Zarvos takes over as the composer this time around and he did a excellent job highlighting the beauty in the film and puncuating the action. The smooth, tense and slow building music to the action never over took the scenes, but the score really sores in the moments with the towns people. I loved the intimate way Italy is shown and how it highlights the food and its people. It was quite tranquil against the blood soaked action sequences. As I said before, the second film stayed true to the tone of the first film, but it quickly started to stray and become about the action set pieces. This film brings it all back and wraps up the story in a heartfelt way that may leave you wanting more, but doesn't over stay its welcome. I truly enjoyed this film and if you loved the first 2, then you'll enjoy this one. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in comments below. Thanks for reading!

May December (dir. Todd Haynes) x WFF 2023.
There's a deeply sincere quality to the dryly comical knowingness of May December's detached psychological humour. Scripted by screenwriter Samy Burch, the self-conscious film revels in its cattiness. It's often truly uncomfortable how the various characters toy and play with each other's emotions as Brazillian composer Marcelo Zarvos' delightfully overwrought musical score dials up the sense of high tension. It's an intoxicating ride questioning emotionally predatory behaviour at every turn.

May December
Tumblr media
Todd Haynes is the kind of director who can sum up a character or a relationship in the way a person lights a cigarette. Films like MAY DECEMBER (2023, Netlflix) are densely layered to the point one wonders if even he is aware of all the meanings they generate. Like the best art, they raise questions rather than creating answers. MAY DECEMBER takes off from the case of Mary Kay Latourneau, the schoolteacher who seduced a 12-year-old student whom she eventually married. But this is no movie of the week (the film even pokes fun at that kind of filmmaking). Instead, it deals with the lines between reality and personal narrative as an actress (Natalie Portman) cast in the film version of a similar case travels to Savannah to interview Gracie (Julianne Moore), now living with the much younger husband (Charles Melton) with whom she had had an affair when he was 13. Moore has constructed a narrative in which she was seduced, but we also see what a control freak she can be. She treats her husband more like her son and relentlessly body shames her two daughters. At the same time, Portman is constructing her own narrative, trying to come up with a way to play Moore (she even apes her mannerisms at times) that fits her feminist posturing while also satisfying her need to show off. It’s hardly a surprise that Moore is simply superb. But Melton and Portman are revelations. He starts out as almost a vacuum, the character Moore has created for him, but gradually reveals surprising depths of feeling and even a sense of personal trauma. And Portman has a little tour de force monologue practicing for her film that starts out with her channeling Moore and eventually turns back into Portman (you’ll get it when you see the film). Haynes gets strong performances throughout, even from the extras, but special honors are due to D.W. Moffett, as Moore’s ex-husband, still not quite sure what happened to his marriage, and Cory Michael Smith as their son, who seems less jealous that he lost his mother to Melton than that he lost Melton to his mother. The score by Marcelo Zarvos is a re-arrangement of themes from Michel Legrand’s music for THE GO-BETWEEN (1971). Knowing that film, about an aristocratic woman’s manipulation of a boy who has a crush on her, just deepens the power of Haynes’ film.

Oversight by thefinestmuffins for BeneathAnOrangeSky | Rated E | Josh Lyman/Donna Moss | Complete | Donna watches, hands sunk deep in her coat pockets, as Josh trots back over to Cliff.
Moon glow intersects with street lamp to back-light the fountain, lending it a strange halo. Beyond it, all she can really grasp are two hazy silhouettes, both coiled with tension, paused there in the gloom of the night park for longer than she expects.
Her own pulse thrums, rabbity, in her fingers, and her guts sink at the prospect of her innermost thoughts being read out before a court or before Congress, let alone before an entire nation.
A gust of wind tosses her hair into her eyes, and she pulls her trench coat tighter around herself as she waits.
Josh was right — it is getting colder — but that’s not why she shivers.
Prompt: War Crimes angst + hooking up
Immolatio by hufflepuffhermione | Rated M | Josh Lyman/Donna Moss | Complete | When Cliff threatens to indict Donna for perjury, Josh puts himself on the line to save her from criminal charges. His choice has significant consequences professionally and personally; a media circus and a Congressional investigation are the least of his troubles when his actions might cause him to lose Donna anyway.

Anyone could have predicted that Josh would be insanely jealous of Cliff Calley. Absolutely no one would have predicted that said jealousy would actually lead to him admitting his feelings to Donna. Sometimes, Josh surprises even himself.
(Also Josh has a thing for Donna's feet, but it's not what it sounds like, okay?)

SAMEDI 27 JANVIER 2024 (Billet 3/3)
L’étonnante BANDE-SON DE « MAY DECEMBER »
