Today in Great Lakes shipping history. January 3rd.
2002: For the second year in a row the tanker GEMINI (steel propeller tanker, 420 foot, 5,853 gross tons, built in 1978, at Orange, Texas) was the first vessel of the year in Manistee, Michigan. She headed to the General Chemical dock to load 8,000 tons of brine for Amherstburg, Ontario. The vessel arrived at Manistee in 2002, on January first, and Captain Riley Messer was presented a hackberry cane, crafted by local resident Ken Jilbert. A similar cane was presented to the vessel Saturday morning.

It’s been just over a month since I took these, and I’m living somewhere else now. I like it here and I like it there, and I’m just full of the rarest kind of gratitude to have washed my hands in both places.

I had a dream last night that I was being driven through a beautiful mountain range, and the dream tried to be terrifying because the car kept rolling off the sides of cliffs and shit but the whole dream I couldn't stop crying because of how relieved I was to be able to take a fucking break from work and be surrounded by nature again.
