Part two of A Road to Somewhere
💤
You weren't sure when you fell asleep, maybe after the stop for gas. But when you woke up, the skies had mellowed into soft oranges and pinks.
Hypnos' had his shade tucked into his shirt, and his fingers tapped along the wheel in time to the music.
His face looked relaxed for the first time since the trip began. Your heart tightened with something you couldn't put a name to, even if you were upset with him, you still wanted him happy.
You sat up with a yawn, "Where are we?"
"Moo." Hypnos replied.
"Really? Fine, you are free from the bet or whatever." You waved a hand around.
"We just got into the mountain path, about an hour away from the inn my mom told me about." Hypnos chatted quickly. "And then we are only ten minutes away from the ocean. Which you will be amazed at and will thank me profusely for taking you."
You chuckled, "Did you miss being able to talk my ear off?"
Hypnos shoved your shoulder with a laugh, "Shut up. You just got lucky with that cow."
"You know I've seen pictures right? I know what the ocean looks like." You told Hypnos.
"Oh sure, the pictures are totally the same." Hypnos rolled his eyes, "I told you to trust me how many times now?"
"Okay. Okay. You're right, Hypnos." You said.
"Thank you! See now only if I can get everyone else to see that." Hypnos replied.
It was about two hours of driving on the path and no inn sight when you spoke up.
"I think we're lost." You said quietly as you studied the dark and looming woods. There was no light or signs to guide you. Even the moonlight offered little help.
"We are not lost. Mom probably just forgot how long it takes to get there." Hypnos squinted into the dark, even the high beams struggled to break through the darkness.
You pulled up your phone, and tried to get the google maps pulled up. You gave up after a few minutes and opened up the paper map.
"Told you so." Hypnos murmured.
You opted not to respond as you used your phone's flashlight to read the map.
After a few moments, you found roughly where you were. You could see where the mountain path ended. "It looks like there might be a turn up here to leave the mountains. Maybe twenty miles? Is that where inn is?"
Hypnos nodded, "Yeah, you go past the mountains, keep driving until you can hear the ocean, you should be able to see the inn."
You bit your bottom lip as you watched the dark forest blurred together. You really hoped Hypnos was right about this.
💤
It had been another hour with no end in sight. Only the dark woods remained, an unwelcome present.
Hypnos had stopped talking, his hands tight on the wheel. The air was tense and you could feel how tight your chest was. Normally you could count on Hypnos to break it but Hypnos hasn't been himself for most of the trip. The drunk call at three am, the lack of his phone use and how desperate he was for you to see the ocean; something he never seemed to care about before.
You rolled your head to look at him. He still looked good, even when he was stressed and tired. And you were far too tired to care if Hypnos caught you staring.
"Do you remember what I said I would do if we got lost in the woods?" You asked him, breaking the silence for the first time in a while. "You know, eating your bones and whatnot."
Hypnos' lips quirked up in a small grin. "Why is it that every time when something happens you threaten to eat me? You did it even when we were in the boy scouts together."
"Maybe because I know how tasty you are." You said without thinking.
Hypnos laughed, "I never thought cannibalism would be used to hit on me but here we are."
You went silent, flushed and turned away to stare out the window. "I wasn't…"
"No. No, I know. Just a joke." Hypnos said quickly.
You didn't see the glance Hypnos shot you. The air grew thick with awkwardness that you were unwilling to break.
"Y/N, look I know we haven't talked about-" Hypnos started to say but you shook your head. You weren't doing this, not now, not where there was no privacy to hide your emotions.
"Do you know how much longer?" You asked, trying not to think about what just happened or about anything.
"Not too long, I think the treeline got thinner." Hypnos replied, his voice hurt. You flinched at his tone, and hated yourself for causing it.
Just as he said that, you broke past the woodland into an open field.
And just like that the air in the car changed.
"Oh thank fuck!" Hypnos whooped and you laughed at his manic smile. "Y/N, roll down the windows. Do you hear anything?"
You obeyed him, and tried to listen over the rush of wind. "Nothing yet. No wait...I think I do hear it."
"Just wait until tomorrow. You're gonna love it." Hypnos yawned.
"Let me take over, you've been driving for the whole trip." You told him, watching Hypnos shake his head.
"Thanks but no. I got this. And also look ahead, the inn should be right around there." Hypnos pointed out and once you made it over the hill, you saw it.
Softly lit by warm lights, it looked like it belonged in a storybook. Once you arrived, checked in with the chatty front desk girl and made your way to the room, one with two beds, you sat down with a happy sigh. You kicked your shoes off, watching Hypnos stumbled to his own bed.
Hypnos flopped face down on his bed with a moan. "I love this bed." He slurred. "Best bed ever."
You looked around the room, it leaned into the nautical with soft blues walls and white shells decor. A small white and green turtle figurine stared at you from your bedside table.
"Hey Hypnos?" You asked, staring at the turtle so you didn't have to look at him. "I'm sorry. About what happened in the car."
When you got no response, you glanced at him only to see him soundly asleep. You walked over to him and lightly stoke his hair. Carefully you tugged his shoes off and flipped what blanket you could over him.
And with that you turned off the lights.
💤
"No peeking. I swear I will turn the car around if I see you even try." Hypnos' hand covered your face but you pushed his hand away.
"I've been covering my eyes since we got the car." You replied, a little grumpy at how early Hypnos woke up. The one time you would have wanted to sleep in, Hypnos was up and moving even before the inn started serving breakfast.
"Mom took me and my brothers here once, did I tell you that?" Hypnos sounded excited. "Than got stung by a jellyfish and cried for like three hours."
"You sound way too happy about that." You chuckled.
"He kicked over my sand castle, he deserved it." Hypnos muttered.
You felt the car stopped and with one more warning not to peek, Hypnos got out. Your door opened and Hypnos gilded you out.
His hands rested on your shoulders, warm and big. It took everything not to lean more into the touch.
You heard the sounds of crashing waves and a faint sound of a gull cry.
"Okay... and look!"
It was beautiful. The ocean was so much bluer than you thought possible. You stepped on to the sand and walked forward, Hypnos followed behind you.
You two were the only souls around the hidden patch of beach between the cliffs, and all you can hear is the ocean hitting the rocks.
"Dude! How did your mom find this place?" You asked as you stopped short of the ocean's reach.
"My dad brought her here when they first met." Hypnos kicked off his flip flops and stepped into the water up his knees.
You copied him, only to almost fall backwards when a big wave came but caught yourself at the last second. "Woah, I didn't expect the waves to be so strong."
Hypnos tossed an arm around your shoulders to hold you steady as the waves rolled past both of you. He laughed warmly, "So pictures are totally the same thing huh?"
You smiled, "You're right, the pictures don't do justice."
"Music to my ears, Y/N." Hypnos squeezed your shoulder, "Come on. Let's get set up."
💤
The day went by quickly, sunset had just begun with deep reds and oranges. You could feel the sunburn already on your cheeks. Hypnos' shoulders and back were already burned and you knew you would be hearing him bitch about it later.
You laid on your stomach on the beach towel, lazily watching him build the tower of a sand castle.
Hypnos' tongue was sticking out a little and it made him look boyishly charming.
You looked toward the ocean, the waves lapping away at the footprints left behind. You didn't see the small bucket Hypnos packed tightly with sand or the devious look in his eyes.
You yelped when the cold lid of the bucket touched between your shoulder blades, followed by the sand. You turned your head toward Hypnos who grinned at your offended glare.
He immediately begins adding more on you, patting it down firmly with both hands.
"Hypnos." You said carefully, "If you put any more sand on me, I will kick your ass."
Wordlessly Hypnos scooped up a huge pile of sand in his hand and met your eyes.
"I won every fight we ever had since we were kids, so don't." You warned, eyes narrowed but a grin threatened to break on your face.
With a mad laugh, Hypnos dropped the sand on your back and you promptly tackled him. You were able to push his back into the sand but half a second later, you realized you missed both his arms as they tightened around your shoulders.
Hypnos rolled, pulled you along with him and your back hit the sand. You let out a grunt as you tried to squirm out but Hypnos matched you for every move. You freed one hand only for Hypnos to grab your wrist and pinned it by your head.
He immediately took the opportunity to do the same with your other wrist as he straddled your waist with all of his weight on you.
Hypnos stared down at you, panting slightly. You could tell he looked surprised as you did.
You relaxed under him, and spread out your hands.
"You win." You told him softly. Between the sounds of the waves and how the sunset made Hypnos' eyes even more golden, you couldn't think straight. Or even about how you found yourself in this position again when you swore you wouldn't.
"I win." Hypnos agreed just as softly. He leaned down and kissed you before you could react. For a few minutes, you returned the slow and deep kiss. Hypnos hummed deep in his throat, his chest fully against yours.
Hypnos pulled away, his face flushed and looking at him was what brought you back to reality.
"Nono. No. Hypnos get off now. Please." You begged him. Immediately he moved off and sat down on the sand.
There was an awkward pause as you sat up, not able to speak. A hard wind blew against you, and you shook at how cold and alone you felt.
"Y/N…" Hypnos murmured, his hand reached out to touch you but you moved away.
"No, I'm not doing this again." You said as you curled in on yourself. "Last time almost killed me. Not again."
"What are you talking about?" Hypnos moved closer but didn't touch you, his tone gentle. "Y/N. Look at me. Please. Are… Are you talking about the first time we kissed?"
"What else could I be talking about, Hypnos?" You snapped, "You can't just keep acting like it didn't happen."
"I haven't but you certainly have!" Hypnos' tone turned hard. "I just tried to act like it wasn't a big deal when you made it clear you didn't want a relationship with me."
Hypnos laughed but it wasn't friendly. "And I was the one who brought it up in the car in case you forgot, Y/N."
"Excuse me for not wanting to be your Meg replacement." You snapped at him, not knowing what else to say. You stood to walk away but Hypnos leaped up. His hands grabbed your shoulders and turned you around to face him. His other hand squeezed your biceps.
"What are you talking about?" Hypnos said, his tone desperate.
"You're kidding me right? You've been in love with her since seventh grade when she punched you during gym and gave you a nosebleed." You cried. "I knew you were upset at finding out that your brother is dating her."
Hypnos said nothing for a few moments before he chuckled, "I haven't looked, let alone thought of her that like in years."
You stared, not quite believing what you were hearing. "But you were upset when you found out Thanatos was dating Meg and Zagreus."
"I was upset that he didn't tell me that they had been together for almost a whole year." Hypnos paused. "And that they didn't lock the door. I mean come on. At least a sock on the front door or something."
You laughed slightly, and Hypnos grinned softly. He looked at you with such fondness you had to look away from him to keep yourself from blushing.
"Do you know why I brought you here,Y/N?" He asked carefully.
You opened your mouth only to close it. After a few seconds, you mutely shook your head.
"I want my best friend back." Hypnos said brokenly.
"I had this stupid idea if I could just go somewhere new or different with you, that maybe we could forget what I did to our friendship." Hypnos talked as you stay quiet. "I knew I fucked up, I pushed too hard and too soon but god, I couldn't look away from you anymore and… And I thought you felt the same."
You swallowed, "I thought when you acted like it didn't happen you regretted what happened, regretted me."
"Never, how could I regret you? Y/N, when we weren't talking I was going crazy. I felt like I had a limp missing. Mom was showing me these photos back when we were kids, and you were in almost all of them." Hypnos swallowed. "I just want you back."
You took a deep breath, feeling like you were on a cliff and didn't know if you were to fall forward or backward. "You didn't lose me. I just didn't want to be the thing you used to get over Meg."
"Is that why you didn't want to go out with me?" Hypnos asked and squeezed your arm gently. "Y/N, I don't know if you noticed but I've been crazy about you for years."
"Oh." You blinked. "Oh."
Hypnos smiled, "Yeah. Oh."
"Is it too late? For us?" You asked, heart racing.
"Never." Hypnos cupped your face. "Can I kiss you again?"
"Yes, please." You met him halfway into the kiss, smiling with relief.
Days later, on your way home, Hypnos' hand rested on your thigh as you sat in peace.
It felt like home.

will we be getting anyting spooky for this year? "ain't afraid of no ghost!" fed my halloween loving soul.
hi!!
I’m a little burnt out with writing right now, BUT I do have a piece from the Selkie Verse that’s a little bit ghostly/scary. I can’t remember if I posted it here already or not, but I’ll give it to you (again?)
It’s like 8k so be prepared!
Title: ember ghosts
Summary: Flash forces Peter, Ned, and MJ to go ghost hunting in a local cemetery. Peter decides to add a little pizzazz to this trip in the form of Resident Dead Hero Jack Murdock to get back at Flash. Things, as they are wont, go terribly wrong.
--------------
Matt’s new coat was white and incredibly heavy; Peter learned that last part upon dragging MJ and Ned over to catch Matt in the act of grooming it.
He barked at them and the volume of the sound locked Peter into place for a minute before he came back to himself and hustled in to go flop down next to Matt and ask him if he needed help first, and then secondly, if his dad was busy.
Matt felt for his chin and then jerked his face close.
“What business do you have with him?” he asked.
Stories about baby seals, obviously.
Matt tossed him away.
“You’re not borrowing my father’s spirit to scare Flash,” he said.
MJ and Ned came over to join the pleading session.
“But Mr. Murdock’s the biggest ghost ever,” Peter lamented.
“He’s a normal sized spirit, not a ghost,” Matt sniffed at him as he gathered up his fur rug from the floor and started picking through it in his lap.
The gesture he used was mesmerizing. He dragged the fur back the wrong way until he found something he didn’t like, then used the last three fingers on his hand to scrape at it until it was vanquished. He pulled his whole hand over the place again and carried on down the stripe he was making until he found another knot or bit of dirt or something to scratch at.
“Can I try?” Ned asked.
Matt’s face jerked his way and he dragged even more of the coat into his lap.
“No touching,” he said.
“I thought Foggy’s coat was the white one?” MJ asked.
Matt gathered his coat even further in offense.
“It will shed,” he said. “It is a new coat.”
“It’s baby fur,” Peter told the others. “Foggy said—”
He got a face full of baby fur and could now confirm that it was soft and fluffy and amazing. He could sleep in this.
“It’s a new coat,” Matt emphasized. “Annoying me will not unlock access to my old man.”
Boo on you, sealman.
“I’m gonna ask your mom then,” Peter declared.
He got yanked down before he was even all the way up.
Matt held his chin again.
“He’s a spirit,” he said. “And a hero. Say it with me.”
“He’s a spirit and a hero,” Peter repeated.
Matt shoved him away.
“If you ask him very nicely, he might be interested in having some time away from the church. But not too long. He can’t be away from Mum for too long, you hear?”
That was permission.
“We hear,” Peter promised. “Should we bring Sister Maggie an offering?”
Matt huffed and stood up. He left his pile of coat behind him and the urge to pet it behind his back was insurmountable. Peter met Ned and MJ’s eyes and bounced his brows. MJ shook her head.
Matt returned from the table and held something out towards the coat. MJ leaned forward and plucked it out of his hand.
“A comb?” she asked.
“Tell her its teeth are too wide,” Matt said. “Go get a bouquet of flowers—no roses, Peter. Go for hyssop if you can find it.”
Copy that.
“Be gone with you.”
“You’re my favorite teammate,” Peter said.
“I said begone,” Matt sniffed.
---
--
-
“You think he should have just kept it anyways?” MJ asked on the way to May’s friend Tonya’s place.
Ned took the comb from her and held it up to the sun.
“What do you think it’s made out of?” he asked.
Knowing the selkies? Probably teeth.
The other two stared at Peter.
He shrugged.
“Johnny says selkies are obsessed with guarding their teeth,” he said. “So maybe it’s whale bone or something.”
Ned huffed.
“Maybe it’s turtle shell,” he said.
Maybe.
“Why not roses?” MJ asked Peter.
Oh, well that was easy enough.
“There’s not really a kind of rose that isn’t a curse for Mr. Murdock,” he said. “It’s all friendship this, scorned lover that. And from the sounds of it, he doesn’t like them. Hyssop is a sacrifice flower, so you know. It’s an offering for both him and Sister Maggie.”
MJ tapped at her lip.
“Do you think we should cover our basis with a can of sardines, too?” she asked.
Well, it couldn’t hurt.
 ---
--
-
Tonya, upon learning that the flowers Peter was seeking were to be given to a ‘selkie and her young man’ (in her words) went a little overboard.
She stuffed the hyssop in as an afterthought among a tryptic of sunflowers in a bed of bursting blue cornflowers. She mused on a pink rose or two to top the whole thing off, until Peter informed her that the son of the recipients had warned against it.
She said hollyhock would have to do, and then she gave Peter a basket of herbs for drying back home. She said to leave them outside when he went in to talk to the selkie.
Tonya’s apprentice said nothing the whole time and stared at Peter like he was scum while she snipped the low leaves off the stems of black-eyed susans. Peter resolutely didn’t look at her or her fancy, pale-eyed familiar.
She was a poser, anyways.
“Tell me how it goes,” Tonya hummed, draping herself across the desk and humming. “I wish I could bag a selkie. Imagine it, Missy. Strong handsome man comes up from the banks and—”
“The banks of the Hudson, Ms. Rice?” Missy said scathingly.
Tonya considered this then shrugged.
“He’s shower first,” she said.
Peter and the others said bye.
 ---
--
-
Sister Maggie was suspicious of the flowers. But to be fair, she was suspicious of pretty much everything. She accepted the comb back much more comfortably.
“You want Jackie?” she asked once that was done.
“Yes, ma’am,” Peter said.
“What for?”
A reckoning.
“One of our classmates is a jerk,” MJ said. “He’s forcing everyone in our club to go ghost-hunting with him even though no one wants to. So we thought we’d give him a run for his money, but we didn’t want to like, disturb anyone or raise the dead or whatever.”
Sister Maggie’s eyebrow arched and Peter swore that she was going to start in for a lecture. He braced himself.
It did not come.
“That’s considerate of you,” she said instead. “How long do you need him for?”
“Like, just a few hours? Fourish?” MJ said.
“Let me ask him,” Sister Maggie said. “I think he’ll be interested, he’s been rolling balls back to the wains all day. It’s only fun for the first five times.”

-
Mr. Murdock was a good four inches taller than Matt and around forty or fifty pounds heavier. He looked like he could carry all the babies at St. Agnes’s all at the same time if he wanted to. But, having seen the guy in action (i.e. hopelessly lost in the tunnels of the great seanchaidh), Peter now knew that he was kind of a St. Bernard burdened with a troublesome wife and son.
“Have fun,” Sister Maggie said.
Mr. Murdock huffed at her and said that he ‘shan’t’ and it made her laugh as she closed the door behind them all.
“I’m not a ghost,” he told Peter, ignoring the other two’s shock and awe.
“A spirit,” Peter said. “Yeah, I know. But Flash is a dick and you don’t like bullies, right?”
Mr. Murdock’s jaw worked.
“What kind of bully, now?” he asked.
“He calls us names and talks shit behind our backs and runs into me on purpose in the hall during passing period,” Peter said.
“Easy fix for that,” Matt’s dad said with a hand wave.
“Mr. Murdock, I can’t fight him. I’ll break him in half,” Peter said. “Fighting is only for spiders.”
Mr. Murdock did not understand. That was okay, he and Matt only understood the language of hitting people. It was genetic.
“If you can just like, do the glowy thing right behind him tonight when we go to this crypt, that would be super helpful,” Peter said.
“You glow?” Ned asked Mr. Murdock.
Mr. Murdock was not convinced.
“How will me standing over a guy get him to stop bullying you?” he asked.
That…was maybe a fair point.
“It’ll scare him,” Ned said. “And it’ll be all his fault and everyone will blame him and he’ll feel stupid for having made everyone go along with his dumb idea.”
Mr. Murdock considered him and then looked back to Peter.
“Just go with it,” Peter said. “It’s a teenager thing. It’s how we keep each other humble.”
 ---
--
-
Mr. Murdock didn’t want to wait with them until nightfall. He wanted to be with Matt. That was his second favorite place to be, apparently, after hanging around Sister Maggie, but Peter got the feeling that Matt would talk Mr. Murdock out of some good, honest revenge and into some Catholic guilt if they were stuck together. So he gave him the next best thing.
Foggy was basically a vengeful spirit.
He laughed really hard at the idea of Mr. Murdock going around scaring kids in a cemetery.
“No, no,” he said. “Here, you must—Jack, can you hold things?”
Peter snapped his head back to Mr. Murdock.
“Some,” Mr. Murdock said.
“How much can you lift?” Foggy asked.
Mr. Murdock squinted at him.
“I don’t like the question,” he said.
Foggy abandoned them all to go dig through one of his kitchen drawers. He came back with tiny bottle and held it out to Peter.
“Mix it with some lamp oil,” he said.
Peter took the bottle.
“What is it?” he asked.
“Ask not what you don’t want the answer to,” Foggy said. “Just mixy-mix, boyo. Here, I’ve even got a lantern around here somewhere. Jack, we need to dress you for the part.”
Peter paused and turned to look up at Mr. Murdock’s dark eyes and thick hair.
Dress? Him?
You could dress a spirit?
“Why not?” Foggy said. “You, my dear sir, need a coat and a flatcap.”
Mr. Murdock’s whole expression dropped.
“I’m not playing some ghostly lighthouse man in the middle of New York City,” he said.
“You are,” Foggy said seriously. “For your people, Jack. Think about your people. And fix that accent, I know you’ve got a brogue in you.”
Peter took Mr. Murdock home with him when he and the others split off to reconvene at the cemetery at 8 o’clock. Mr. Murdock rode the train like a champ. It was cramped from the rush hour traffic and Peter entertained himself by watching Mr. Murdock lay his hands tenderly on top of those belonging to douchebags who were plenty tall enough to hold onto the upper bar but who couldn’t be assed to look away from their phones to realize this.
One guy yelped at Mr. Murdock’s touch on his knuckles and ripped his hand off, only to see nothing there. Everyone around him stared at him.
He coughed and reached up for the overhead rail.
Mr. Murdock abandoned him to squeeze through the carriage to the back. He found a pregnant woman standing beside a group of teenagers all listening to music. Peter watched as he inspected the lady’s phone in her hand and then her face. He tapped on the top of the phone so it fell right out of her loose grip, and the woman jumped. The kids all startled at the sound of the phone hitting the ground and two jumped up to pick it up for her. One offered her his seat.
She thanked them and carefully, carefully sat down.
Mr. Murdock watched this with no expression.
Peter swallowed a giggle.
Jonathan ‘Jack’ Murdock. Lighthouse Ghost Impersonator and Subway Manners Enforcer.
 ---
--
-
“Oh, hey there, long time no see,” May said to Mr. Murdock when Peter got home. “You’re going with Pete and the others tonight?”
Mr. Murdock said nothing.
Peter recounted his poltergeist from earlier for him. May thought it was just delightful.
“I told him to take Johnny,” she said. “But you might be even better.”
“They should just fight it out,” Mr. Murdock said.
“Mm. School authorities won’t go for it,” May said. “So I’m afraid we must stoop to witchcraft.”
 ---
--
-
Mr. Murdock didn’t know the full glory of Youtube, so Peter spent the next few hours snacking and showing him clips of old vines. Then, when it was time to go, he turned to google how to use an oil lamp. Mr. Murdock watched him struggle for a good five minutes before reaching over him and showing him how.
“Did you and Matt not have electricity in Ireland?” Peter asked him.
Mr. Murdock huffed.
“No, I just uh. I guess I had an interest in maritime shit since I was a kid.”
Ohhh.
“Is that how you met Sister Maggie?” Peter asked.
Mr. Murdock’s lip quirked up a little.
“No,” he said. “But we got there anyways, didn’t we?”
 ---
--
-
“Do you not like roses?” Peter asked him on the way to the train station.
“They all smell like soap,” Mr. Murdock said as he followed Peter down the steps to the station. He was wearing the hat that Foggy had impressed on him. It was a strange thing; Foggy had marked it with a piece of chalk under the brim before handing it over and it seemed to have made it ghost-apparel. He didn’t have a big scary coat, but he did have a scarf and between that and the hat and the lantern, Mr. Murdock was plenty old-timey lighthouse man.
“Not all of them,” Peter said. “Some smell like lemon.”
“That’s what they want you to think,” Mr. Murdock said over the heads of folks by the train. “S’all soap.”
 ---
--
-
“Did you every hunt for ghosts when you were a kid?” Peter asked when they were approaching the gates of the meeting place. May had given him a bag full of offerings to place on graves when people he was with weren’t looking. Some mandarin oranges and little bouquets of lavender and zinnias with sprigs of baby’s breath. They were pretty. Peter had something like twenty in among the fruit.
“No, the dead never bothered me half as much as the living,” Mr. Murdock said.
That sounded kind of angsty.
“How did you become a hero?” Peter asked.
“Kind of a long, boring story,” Mr. Murdock said. “The short of it, I guess, is that I did a lot of shit for the fae and they appreciated it.”
“Johnny’s starstruck of you,” Peter pointed out. “He thinks you’re like, super cool. He told me you smell really good.”
Mr. Murdock glanced down at him.
“It’s a sign of status for the fae to be attached to a hero,” he said.
Oh???
“Am I a hero? Does Johnny get a boost from being with me?” Peter asked.
Mr. Murdock shrugged.
“You’re both pretty young to be able to know or tell,” he said. “And you’re a witch. So unless you’re a hero-witch, I got nothin’ for you.”
Ah, well. It was worth a shot.
“There’s Ned, that’s our cue. Here, you can take the lantern. I’ll point Flash out to you,” Peter said.
Mr. Murdock took the lantern Peter held out to him without complaint while Peter fumbled through his pockets for a lighter.
He held it out.
“Do you want me to light it or are you okay?” he asked.
“You light it,” Mr. Murdock said. “This is heavy for me in this shape.”
 ---
--
-
Mr. Murdock took the lantern and left Peter to go meet MJ and Ned. The light had vanished by the time Peter looked back.
“I think Mr. Murdock’s a little sad,” he told the others.
“Ghost separation anxiety?” MJ offered.
“Maybe it’s harder for him to be with people who aren’t his family. Maybe he’s tired,” Ned said.
Yeah, maybe.
“Or maybe he’s a softie who doesn’t like scaring people,” MJ said. “But that means that Matt got his nonsense gene from the nun side.”
It wasn’t implausible.
“Hey, are you guys coming?” Abe tossed back at them. He was prepared with two flashlights and a backpack with a bulky mobile charger in his pocket. He’d said that he wasn’t falling for ‘any ghost shit’ that night and no one was making any ‘dumbass mistakes’ on his watch.
Peter thought that Abe might try to punch Mr. Murdock in the gut. He and MJ agreed to separate him from Flash as soon as possible.
 ---

-
Flash insisted on leading the charge—of course he did. Peter hung back a ways so that he could set offerings on graves. Ned told kept reminding him that he didn’t have to do it for every single one, and obviously Peter knew that. But some of the graves deserved stones on them and a quick prayer. That was just being polite.
Flash caught him at it and asked him if he was scared. Peter told him to mind his own business.
“We’re here to find ghosts, not feed them,” Flash volleyed back.
Peter pointed at him in a way that he hoped was dramatic enough for Mr. Murdock to catch sight of it from wherever he was.
“If they’re eatin’ these, they aren’t eatin’ me,” he said. He offered Flash an orange. “You want one?”
Ned snickered.
“You’re not funny, Parker,” Flash sighed. His breath clouded around him. “Come on, it’s not too much further.”

The ‘crypt’ was actually a mausoleum, as Peter had expected. It was tall and made of stone and Peter could tell immediately that it was of no one of import to the local necromancers.
Even the vultures had declared the folks in this one too boring for their rituals. It was probably a family thing. A bunch of folks who were ordinary but devout. Maybe they had a little money and chose to spend it in death.
Everyone had their own thing.
Peter had oranges and flowers, for example. He snuck around the corner to set one onto the ground by the stone.
His breath puffed out around it and misted away and Peter paused before standing up out of his stoop. He could feel a breeze on his cheeks. He looked up and around.
“Mr. Murdock?” he breathed.
Nothing.
No lantern light.
“You’re not my ghost,” Peter whispered. “I’m just leavin’ a snack, okay?”
The breeze seemed to vanish.
Cool.
“Don’t mind my spirit friend. He’s big and kinda glowy, but he’s not one of you,” Peter said.
“Peter?”
He glanced over his shoulder.
“I’ve gotta go,” he said. “But this other idiot is gonna try to climb onto your grave. Sorry about him. Don’t worry, we’ll take care of it.”
The leaves at his feet blew up and scattered around the orange.
“No problem.” Peter said. “Bye now.”
He hurried back to the others.

The main problem was that none of them knew how roman numerals worked and, surrounded by ghosts, looking it up on the internet was kind of challenging.
MJ and Ned gave Peter pointed looks when he came back to join them.
They knew Peter could read roman numerals. He was assigned the task of keeping his mouth shut without anyone having to tell him.
“Maybe they don’t want to be read,” Felicia said.
“Correct,” Abe agreed. “No reading. I can’t read. None of us can read. This is a blessing of ignorance, given to us by the Lord.”
Flash stared at them.
“X is ten,” he deadpanned.
“Damnit, Flash,” Abe said.
“What’s L?” Flash said. “And M?”
“Code,” Ned chimed in.
He got flat eyebrows all around.
“We live in the twenty-first century,” Flash told the stone. “Just use normal numbers like everyone else.”
The wind kicked up a bit in offense.
“Alright, well, now what?” Abe said. “Not a single ghost so far. Only a creepy stone in a creepy yard with a creepy—oh shit. Turn off the light.”
Say what now?
“Keeper,” Abe snapped over his shoulder, pointing away from them towards a floating light. “Turn ‘em off or we’ll get kicked out.”
Oh.
The lantern.
Peter joined the others in turning off their lights and hiding on the other side of the mausoleum.
“You’d have thought it would be too late for working,” Felicia whispered.
“It’s a graveyard,” MJ whispered back. “The time you need the most coverage is night.”
“Are they still there?” Abe asked.
Flash peeked out from around the stone.
“No,” he said.
Peter untensed his shoulders and stepped out.
“What if it’s not a keeper?” he asked. “What if it’s a—”
“Huh-uh. No,” Abe snapped. “We’re not asking stupid questions tonight, remember, Parker? I specifically said this not 10 minutes ago. No stupid questions.”
Abe had seen a few horror movies, it would seem.
“Alright, alright. No stupid questions,” Peter said. “It’s just—that doesn’t look like a flashlight to me.”
Ned made a show of looking around.
“It’s gone, it doesn’t look like anything to anyone,” he said.
“This is exciting,” Felicia anxiety-giggled.
“It’s not,” MJ sighed. “Well, we’re already here. Might as well keep going.”
The others all turned towards her.
“Wait, you mean, go further?” Flash asked.
MJ shrugged.
“We’re only like, part of the way in,” she said.
Peter surveyed the space beyond their current alley of monuments. The light from the two floodlights at the gated entrance was already weak. Further out, there wouldn’t be light until they hit the war memorial way, way in the back.
That was a plenty big enough stretch.
“Guys? Did it get foggy?” Felicia asked.
Peter shivered.
He had about ten oranges left and an equal number of flower packets.
Welp.
“Let’s go,” he said. “Before it rolls in thicker.”
 ---
--
-
The grass seemed to get wetter and wetter with every yard and Peter had started to see things out of the corners of his eyes. Shadows. Little flickers of light.
He felt MJ’s fingers sink into his jacket sleeve as he watched an extra set of legs follow behind them in the jerky shadows jostled around by the flashlights.
Abe froze twice, each time to take a deep steady breath and to remind himself that he was not asking stupid questions.
Flash laughed at him, but the sound was strained and a little hysterical. Felicia had grabbed ahold of one of each of their arms up ahead. Ned touched Peter’s shoulder.
“Where is he?” he whispered.
Peter shrugged.
“He’s lantern man,” he said. “We’ll see him.”
“In the mist?”
Mmmm. Okay maybe they should have brought Johnny after all.
 ---
--
-
They were halfway to the war memorial when the lights above it suddenly went out. MJ’s fingers dug deep into Peter’s sleeve. Ned gasped.
“Dude,” Flash’s voice said in the dark. “That’s not cool. Don’t do that.”
“Don’t you talk to it,” Abe snapped. “Don’t you dare talk to it. Just walk. Don’t ask questions. Just walk.”
Peter felt wind against his cheeks. He shivered.
Mr. Murdock wouldn’t fuck with the lights, would he? Was he that strong?
Peter thought he was supposed to be a spirit, not a ghost. And he’d seemed kind of tired earlier. Surely he hadn’t fallen asleep or something, right?
There was a loud rustle to the right of their group and Peter jumped, which made MJ jump, which made Felicia yelp.
The rustle carried on. It was punctuated with a horrible, wet-sounding slap all of the sudden.
“Wh—what was that?” Flash asked.
Another slap rang out, then another. Followed by the sound of something dropping into leaves. Something…heavy.
“Nice try, slugger,” Mr. Murdock growled.
Actually growled. Like an angry tiger or something.
Peter shivered hard.
This guy hadn’t been scared at all. He’d been preparing himself.
To fight.
Fuck.
Abort mission. Abort, abort, abort.
“We need to leave,” Peter said sharply.
“Agreed,” MJ said.
“Yep,” Ned said.
“You speak my language finally,” Abe said. “About-face and—”
“Don’t move,” Mr. Murdock said dangerously.
Peter felt his body turn to ice.
“Who’s there?” Flash asked.
“They’re mine,” Mr. Murdock rumbled. “Hands off, ya fuckin’ lowlife. Yeah, get back to your hole. Go on.”
Oh, okay.
Fun times with the undead. Peter should have brought holy water.
“Wh—who’s there?” Flash asked again in a cracking voice.
The sound of metal clanking met them and then an orange flash crackled into sight. And there was Mr. Murdock. Six foot two and missing his hat. He looked huge and solid and his shoulders glowed ever so slightly.
Flash and Felicia and Abe gasped.
“Y’all better be moving along,” Mr. Murdock said, meeting Peter’s eyes seriously.
“Are—are you a ghost?” Felicia whispered.
Mr. Murdock flicked his eyes down at her and they didn’t reflect the light from the lantern.
“Folks call me ‘Jack,’” he said, holding out the lantern. “Or they used to. Nowadays, the little ones call me ‘John.’ This is a ritual grounds tonight, kids. Bad night for a hunt for the living. Go on, I’ll see you out. Take this; your lights won’t work.”
MJ took out her flashlight and it clicked as she turned it on and then off.
“What kind of ritual?” Peter asked.
Mr. Murdock’s lips thinned.
“Go,” he said.
Peter’s chest expanded.
“Where are they?” he asked.
Mr. Murdock shook his head.
“Go,” he said again. “This isn’t for you, little witch.”
Peter heard the others’ shape intakes of air, but he held firm.
“You’re a spirit,” he said. “You can’t stop them.”
Mr. Murdock sighed and his shoulders fell slowly.
“I’m not just a spirit,” he said. “I’m a hero. I’ll see you out. Tell my son the name of this place. He’ll come in the morning.”
Wh—
No, wait.
“Don’t go,” Peter said.
But he was already gone. Felicia was left holding the lantern.
 ---
--
-
They ran-slipped-fell all the way back the way they’d come. This time, Peter held his breath at the sound of too many feet hitting the wet pockets of mud around them. He heard Felicia sobbing and the lantern clanking dangerously ahead of them.
The floodlights at the entrance had gone out.
They had to carefully climb the fence and pass off the lantern one at a time until they were on the other said, panting.
Peter realized belatedly that he’d dropped the bag of grave offerings.
He dipped his head and clenched his fists.
He’d have to go back for it in the morning.
“You’re a witch,” Flash suddenly snapped at him.
“Lay off,” MJ said immediately.
“You’re a witch and you brought that—that guy with us?” Flash asked.
“It was supposed to be a joke,” Peter said.
“A joke?” Abe said. “You—Peter, witches aren’t real. Ghosts aren’t real. Who was that?”
“No, you, a witch, thought it would be funny to bring some kind of spirit with us to a graveyard?” Flash demanded.
Peter huffed.
“Hey, you were a dick about this first,” Ned said. “The ghost dude is harmless.”
“Harmless?” Flash said. “Harmless? Yeah, fuckin’ streetfighter ghost is harmless.”
“He’s not a ghost,” Abe said, “He’s an actor. Peter that’s not cool, man. That’s not cool.”
“He’s not an actor,” Felicia said quietly.
The rest of them turned to see her holding the still-burning lantern. She was staring into it.
“His hands were so cold,” she whispered.
Abe executed a full-body shiver.
“Well, now what?” he asked. “We’ve trespassed, found a ghost, and nearly got ritualed to death. What else do we need to do to learn that this was a bad idea all along?”
Peter looked up at the gate.
“Dark magic,” he said.
MJ and Ned turned towards him.
“Peter, you’re not going back in there,” Ned said.
“I took charge of the spirit,” Peter said, setting his jaw. “I’m not going back on my word to a selkie.” He jerked back. “I need my familiar,” he said. “You guys can go.”
“Your…familiar?” Abe said slowly. “Peter. Peter, you are not a witch.”
“He’s not a familiar like others are, maybe, but he’s mine,” Peter said. “And he’ll know how to help the spirit.”
Ned and MJ exchanged glances.
“Okay?” Ned said. “Well, where is he?”

Johnny answered his phone and said he’d been 20 minutes. They were the longest 20 minutes of Peter’s life and were spent primarily being interrogated by Abe, Flash, and Felicia.
They were understandably upset by the set-up, and then understandably upset by the fact that they were, in fact, living in ignorance of a whole multi-dimensional plane.
Abe demanded to know if genies were real, and Peter could only say that they probably were.
“Just so I’m clear here,” Flash said. “You went and borrowed your local seal-person’s husband for a jump-scare for us and now we are waiting on a fire demon to help us rescue the seal-person’s undead husband from some evil witches trying to raise the dead?”
Peter chewed a few fingers.
“That’s the gist of it, yeah,” he said.
“PARKER.”
“PETER. OH MY GOD.”
“Why didn’t you say something?” Abe sobbed.
“I was appeasing the spirits,” Peter snapped at them. “Why do you think I brought all those oranges? Do I look like I’m vitamin C deficient?”
“You’re a witch,” Felicia said. “You’re a witch. That’s insane. How do you—”
“I’m not a witch,” Peter sighed. “I’m—I’m a—I’m almost a witch.”
“Clearly,” Abe said.
“Hey, leave him alone,” Ned jumped in. “It’s no one’s fault this happened. We all thought we were walking into a totally different situation.”
“Yeah, except Mr. Ghost Man,” Flash said. “He knew what was up. Why didn’t you listen to him? Or, I dunno, read the undead-people signs?”
“Because he’s not my family spirit,” Peter snapped at him. “And he’s not a ghost. He’s a spirit, and not like a spirit, even. He’s a—it’s hard to explain. I don’t even know what he is. He’s just different. He’s like an inbetween kind of—”
“He’s a hero.”
They all looked up to see Johnny standing there in blue with a black knitted scarf wrapped triple around his neck. His eyes flashed orange and red and gold. The ground swayed around him, light up by his internal lantern.
Everyone around Peter recoiled.
“What does that mean, Johnny?” Peter asked quietly. “I don’t understand.”
“It means that the spirits of the sea granted him another life in exchange for the protection he offered their people during his human one,” Johnny said. “You should know by now, Peter; the fae work in exchanges.”
“He already made his deal,” Peter said. “I don’t understand.”
“His deal as a human was fulfilled. His soul is safe with his selkie, only she can shepherd it. It will go to the Otherworld, where he will stay in comfort. But he’s chosen to stay here--as a hero. In this world. And as long as he is here and not in the Otherworld, his purpose is to protect humans and fae, to protect them from each other if he must, as he stands now with a foot on both sides of the line.”
Peter felt his breath coming slowly again.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” he asked.
“Because,” Johnny said with a sudden smile. “Your soul is already mine—we share a heart remember? I don’t need you getting stupid ideas—imagine if you decided to become a hero, then died and decided to stick around these parts instead of letting me take you to the Otherworld. You’d drive yourself mad, Peter. You’d never sleep ever again.”
Peter blinked.
“You lied to me?” he asked.
“I’m a fire demon,” Johnny said. “We listen to truths. We don’t have to tell them.”
Wow.
“Know that I’m really upset with you right now,” Peter said.
Johnny bobbed his head.
“But you’re more upset about the hero,” he said. “No need for that. He didn’t become a hero by dumb luck, and anyways, look at his kid. He’ll be fine; he’s the original material. A little dark magic isn’t gonna tear him up. He’s probably just gonna—”
There was a flash like miniature lightening through the bars of the gate.
“I take it back,” Johnny said. “Whoopsy-daisy. Come on, now, heart-boy. Up and over.”
 ---
--
-
Peter landed on the other side of the gate right into mud that hadn’t been there a moment earlier.
“What’s going on?” he asked as Johnny hopped down with him.
“Big, wet,” Johnny said. “Dark, dark magic. Gross. Sticky. Here, we need more light.”
Little embers glittered in the throw of fire that expanded Johnny’s lantern lights. It brightened the space substantially and when Peter looked down, the ground was dry.
“Dude,” Flash said. “You know what? I’m convinced.”
“Johnny Storm is a fire demon,” Abe wept into his hands.
“Stay here,” Peter told Ned and MJ, we’ll be—”
“BACK. BACK. BACK.”
Johnny slammed Peter against the fence and let out a hiss that sounded like water hitting a scalding piece of metal. Peter’s heart throbbed. Johnny slowly released the pressure on him and made a clicking noise.
“I think,” he said after a moment. “That perhaps I am not a big enough fire.”
Dude, what?
Johnny turned to him.
“Sorry,” he said sadly. “More and more are waking up every second. They’re heavy.”
Dude, what?
“I’m really sorry,” Johnny said. “But uh. I think I need to, uh—”
“Need to what, Johnny?” MJ demanded on the other side of the fence.
Johnny looked like he was going to cry.
 ---

-
 “JONATHAN STORM.”
Scary, scary, scary, scary, scary.
“Sue,” Johnny pleaded. “Not here. Not now. There’s hero in the—”
“Oh, I see him,” Sue Storm said, looming. “He’s doing just fine. He’ll hold on for long enough for me to—”
“It’s my fault,” Peter blurted out. “I called him here.”
Sue Storm’s blue eyes seemed to blaze in the dark.
“Don’t blame him,” Johnny said. “I’ll take it. He’s my human. I’ll take it.”
“This is dark magic,” Sue said. “None of you should be here. This earth will turn sodden under the spell of these monsters. The hero will return it to balance. You two, in the meantime, are no heroes. Not even halves of one.”
Peter felt his face burning.
“He’s the selkie’s, Sue,” Johnny said quietly. “He’s not long a hero. Please help him?”
Sue Storm chewed her tongue, gazing holes into Johnny’s face. Johnny looked away first.
“Which selkie?” she demanded.
“Her name is Margaret,” Peter said.
Sue’s face jerked his way. Her eyes widened and she turned back out towards the cemetery.
“Oh,” she said softly. “That selkie. She’s more like us.”
Peter frowned.
“I don’t—” he started.
“She honors the earth and its fae even though she’s sea folk,” she said. She sighed heavily. “Alright, fine. I’ll help. But for the hero, not either of you, you hear? Johnny, you’ll need to make things right with the selkie. She’ll be furious. She’s been nothing but kind to our people. We can’t repay her like this.”
“Will do,” Johnny said.
“Stay here,” Sue said. “All of you. The curse has got into you. We’ll break it all at once.”
Oh shit.
MJ and Ned turned slowly towards Peter.
“Curse?” Ned asked.
Peter groaned.
---
--
-
“It’s a friendship circle,” Johnny bubbled as Peter shoved him, once again, into the sigil he was trying to draw in the dirt at the cemetery entrance.
“I’m gonna salt you in and I will not regret it,” Peter threatened him.
“Johnny, come sit,” Ned said, patting the place between him and Felicia.
“Never,” Johnny hissed at him. “My heart is right—”
Peter left him to finish the circle. Johnny hurried to keep up with him.
Flash watched after him with furrowed eyebrows and a fist pressed to his mouth.
“This is not how this night was supposed to go,” he said.
“We didn’t even ask any stupid questions,” Abe sighed.
“What’s she doing out there?” Felicia asked.
Peter shoved Johnny’s flailing body towards her and finally finished the circle. He’d never made one this big. He started in on the protective signs around the interior.
“She’s a boggart!” Johnny chirped. “She’s boggart-ing!”
Peter felt the pause of the others more than he heard it.
“What does that mean?” Felicia asked.
“Oh. She’s a faerie of darkness,” Johnny said. “So she’s probably winding her way through all the posers and chasing them back to their hovels so that she can go chase the witches away from the hero and let him rest for a bit. She’ll guide him back if he’ll let her—which he might not. You never know with heroes. He might not want her smell on him.”
Peter had the feeling that Mr. Murdock was made of more sense than pride.
“How long will that take?” Abe asked.
Johnny made happy crackling sounds.
“Who knows! Depends on the witches,” he said. “Depends on how many people she needs to terrify. Boggarts get power through fear. The more spirits she scares, the faster she’ll be.”
Peter moved Ned’s backpack out of the way and carried on.
There was a lull.
“Peter, what are you doing?” Felicia asked.
“Protection circle,” MJ said for him.
“Oh.”
There was another silence.
“Where did you learn that?” Abe asked.
“His aunt’s a full witch. She does business in herbs, potions, and materials for their part of Forest hills,” Ned said.
“Oh.”
Flash and Abe scooted forward to let Peter in behind him. They watched him.
“That’s pretty cool, actually,” Felicia said. “Thanks for that.”
A mumbled thanks went around the whole group. Peter finished the final marks and stepped carefully over them into the circle.
“It’s nothing,” he sighed, flopping down and dragging Johnny away from Ned. “I should have known better. I think the ghosts were trying to warn me from the start. I should have listened better.”
More awkward silence.
“Well, it sounds like the fighting’s calmed down,” MJ said. “Mr. Murdock should be okay.”
Yeah.
“Wait,” Abe said. “Isn’t that your boss, MJ?”
Welp.
“Ghost man is my boss’s dad,” MJ sighed.
“Oh my god,” Felicia giggled. “You guys roped your boss’s dad into a practical joke?”
“He didn’t even want to scare you guys,” Peter groaned. “Man, I gotta learn how to read spirits. Johnny, how do I read spirits?”
“No idea. Spirits don’t like me. I’m too bright and obnoxious,” Johnny said.
“I’m un-bonding us,” Peter said. “You have nothing but bad advice and secrets.”
Johnny made kissy noises at him then scrambled up straight.
“Sue’s got the hero,” he said. “She’s arguing with him. Ahahaha.”
Peter cleared his throat. Johnny startled.
“Right, sorry,” he said. “She’s uh. Trying to convince him to come with her, but he’s refusing to look at her. Smart guy, you know that? Name a boggart and they’ll go off on you. He doesn’t want to chance it. Sue’s telling him that she’ll do the invisible thing so he doesn’t see her and he’s not into it, guys.”
Peter took it back. Maybe Mr. Murdock had too much sense for his own good.
“Can you talk to him?” Felicia asked.
“Who? Hero-man? Nah. I can just feel Sue’s frustration,” Johnny said. “Sibling bond, forever. You know?”
No, Johnny. No one knew. The only people with siblings in the circle were MJ and Abe.
“You’re so annoying,” MJ said.
“Aw, I like you too,” Johnny tittered.
Peter yanked him back and prayed that Mr. Murdock would give into the inevitable soon.

-
“Look? See? No trouble. Not even a little trouble. Did I lie to you?”
Peter snapped awake and shook himself. He blinked into the dark until the shapes of bodies appeared before him as the other woke up too. They all turned around to see the dark outline of Sue standing on the other side of the fence.
Mr. Murdock’s tall shape was there too.
They looked…uh.
Kinda scuffed up, actually, hair-wise and scratches and bruises--the whole thing.
“Lord, she’s still talking to me,” Mr. Murdock said, facing away from Sue, now that Peter could see better.
“God is smart enough to see through you talking to him to talk to me,” She pointed out.
“Lord, you are so unknowable,” Mr. Murdock said pointedly.
“You know, for a fae hero, you’re sure religious.”
“Please see me through this period of suffering,” Mr. Murdock carried on. “And safely away from this hostile body and place.”
Johnny leapt up.
“You found him!” he cheered.
“Yes, of course I did,” Sue said. “He was fine, by the way. Meat-head here has anvils for hands.”
“I keep hearing voices, Lord,” Mr. Murdock said miserably. “Whatever sin it is I’ve committed, I’m willing to repent. But you’ve gotta help me out, man; the priest is convinced I’m a demon in his confession box.”
“Move,” Sue told Johnny. “Come one, Hero-man. We’re going through a fence. I dunno if you’ll fit with all those muscles.”
They all watched as Sue got a handful of the back of Mr. Murdock’s shirt and dragged him through the largest part of the gate uncomfortably.
“You did it!” she cheered. “Successful hero. Another quest fulfilled. Look at all these living children. And you even picked up a rock! That’s good for a young guy like—”
“I’m going back to the church and I’m never leaving,” Mr. Murdock finally told her directly.
“Oh,” Sue said. “You’re a church hero. That’s new.”
“I’m done. No more seals. No more mountains. No more lakes. No more cemeteries,” Mr. Murdock said, shaking himself and dragging his hands through his hair to smooth it out.
“Oh, wow, you’ve really been through it, huh?” Sue asked his back as he left them all in place.
“No more superpowers either,” Mr. Murdock said over his shoulder at her. He moved on ahead purposefully.
“I want him,” Sue told Johnny forcefully.
“He’s taken,” Johnny reminded her.
“He’s sturdy is what he is,” Sue said.
“Reed is sturdy,” Johnny pointed out.
Sue contemplated this.
“But he’s not fae,” she said.
Johnny rolled his eyes.
“Sue, we can throw your boyfriend into a graveyard of dark magic and let him fight his way home,” he said. “That’s something we can do. We can even time him.”
Sue drummed fingers across her face and slowly wrapped an arm around Johnny’s shoulders until his cheek was smushed up against hers against his will.
“You are so smart, little brother, sometimes I forget how smart you are,” she said.
She threw him away and straightened herself out.
“We’re hours from dawn,” she said. “We’re going home. Baby witch, you and my brother will apologize to the selkie tomorrow. I don’t think the hero wants to stay with you until then. I’m 90% sure, actually, the hero is already catching a train without you. The rest of you--”
She rounded on all of them.
“Do not play with ghosts, witches, spirits or any receptacle of them, do I make myself clear?”
Peter shrunk under her finger.
“Yes, ma’am,” they all mumbled.
She sniffed.
“Good,” she said. “Now we all need to go talk to baby’s witch’s mom. You have one hell of a curse hanging over you.”

 May was not pleased.
May doused them all in six different herb waters and made them eat something foul that tasted like charcoal and rubbing alcohol.
Then they had to get sprayed off with the hose in the backyard until all the cemetery mud came off and only then did May send everyone home.

 “Hey Peter?”
Peter looked up from his grinding in the doorframe the next morning—it as far as he was allowed at the present moment—and jumped at the whole group from the night before staring down at him.
He scrambled up.
“Uh, hi,” he said.
“Did you say sorry to the selkie yet?” Felicia asked him.
He almost wanted to shush her and check for passersby. May swore at something in the kitchen behind him. He edged forward and closed the door as far as he could without closing it all the way.
“No, not yet. What are you all doing here?” he asked.
He got a wave of eyebrows all around.
“We wanted to go with you and to say thanks. To the hero guy. You know. For uh, saving us from certain and horrible death,” Abe said.
Oh.
Oh.
“Let me, uh--give me just a second,” Peter said.

-
Matt was at his apartment and he opened the door at the third knock. He heard MJ clear her throat and started cackling immediately.
“Don’t be a dick,” MJ said. “Let us say thank you.”
Matt remained inarticulate.
“Oh my god,” he finally choked. “Do you know—I haven’t—He hasn’t been this mad since I ate fries off the street—hold oh. Oh my god.”
Ew, man. That’s disgusting.
“Pops, come on out,” Matt coaxed, wiping tears from his eyes and skirting fingers across his kitchen counter until he got to cupboard under the sink. “They just wanna say sorry, Dad. It’s okay. There’s no secret second quest.”
Mr. Murdock refused to exit his newfound home.
Matt snickered so hard his shoulders shook. He stood up and found his counter to lean his elbows against.
“No harm, no foul to us,” he said amiably. “Mum’s been trying to keep a straight face in Mass. He came here for sympathy that I’m afraid I don’t have.”
Man. It was a wonder that Mr. Murdock stuck around at all.
Peter puffed himself up anyways.
“Mr. Murdock,” he said. “I know you can hear me. And I wanted to say that I’m sorry for roping you into the whole thing yesterday, but I’m also super glad you were there. ‘Cause we would’ve been screwed otherwise. So thank you.”
“Yeah, thank you,” Felicia said. “You’re really nice, and I’m glad you were there, too.”
The others added their thanks to the pile and Matt grinned in the direction of the cupboard.
“Come onnn,” he drawled. “I can feel you giving in, in there.”
Nothing.
Matt muffled a round of giggles in his sleeve.
“He accepts your thanks,” he said. “He’s just allergic to sunlight and gratitude.”
The cupboard door rattled violently. Matt shoved a foot against it.
“Mum isn’t mad either, she thinks it’s healthy for him to do quests without her,” he said. “So you’re all good with the three of us.”
Peter wasn’t positive that they were actually. But okay, sure?
“I guess we’ll leave you guys to uh, brood? Baseball? Whatever it is you do together?” He said.
Matt hummed and nodded and waved them out. Peter shut the door behind them.
“That was easy,” Flash said.
“Man, I hope my dad just dies the once,” Abe said.
“My dad isn’t cool enough to fight zombies in a graveyard,” Felicia said.
MJ considered this.
“My mom could do it,” she said.
Ned snorted. Peter swallowed a laugh.
---
--
-
“So,” Flash said as they passed by the church that Mr. Murdock usually called home. “I know it was all kind of an actual nightmare, but like. I dunno.”
Peter stopped.
“You want more fae bullshit?” he asked in shock.
Flash rubbed at the back of his neck and even Abe and Felicia refused to make eye contact. Ned and MJ stared at them, then Peter in shock.
“It’s just really cool,” Flash admitted. “Like, there’s all this stuff that I thought was fake. But it’s all happening here, all at once—you know. Heroes and zombies and fire demons and witches.”
“This isn’t a tv show,” Peter said. “You know that right? Like, we don’t always win? Yeah, there are heroes and witches, but there’s also really bad magic. Dangerous fae. There are turf wars and tricksters and everything you do is a deal and you always owe someone something. It’s not always fun.”
“Okay, but isn’t it better to know?” Flash asked.
Peter closed his lips.
He didn’t have an argument for that.
“I’m not teaching you,” he sniffed. “I’m already apprenticed. If you want a mentor, it can’t be me—and you can’t have my demon.”
“But he’s Johnny Storm,” Abe blurted out. “Johnny. Storm. Peter, how did you even swing that? And why does he listen to you.”
“He doesn’t,” MJ butted in.
“He does,” Peter corrected.
“He really doesn’t,” Ned said. “Peter’s an amateur witch at best who bound himself to a fire demon with impulse control issues.”
Wow. Betrayed by his own family.
“I’m leaving, I’m grounded, you guy go get a grimoire or something and learn your magic bullshit yourselves,” he said.
“Aww, come on.”
“They were just joking, Peter.”
“Come backkkkk.”
Mr. Murdock had the right idea. Peter had a cupboard to find.

Hope this hits the spot, boo!! And Happy Halloween, y’all!

main hq kinktober list
hq kinktober [day1] tendou satori/cosplay
includes: a bit of story, some angsty broody stuff on reader's part, cosplay (obviously), fingering and female receiving oral sex
wordcount: 4,827
ok this turned out to be more fluff and actual sort of plot than smut. i just started writing at 12:30am and kept going until 6 in the morning. this is the result. if you were looking forward to straight up smut on this first prompt, i'm sorry but THIS IS NOT IT LMAO.
i absolutely adore tendou and the perspective i gave him on life in this. stay quirky, my friends. (as kenma would say... stay interesting, shouyo)
Being Satori was hard. It was unfortunate, exhausting, and just plain miserable - that's what his junior high school classmates wanted him to believe, at least.
In his early years of school, Satori Tendou was teased for his awkward, gangly appearance and unusual mannerisms. His attempts to interact with his peers were often shunned due to the offbeat semblance he exuded, which left most of the other kids feeling unsettled.
His mother, equally peculiar in her own way, urged Satori to make the most of his eccentricities. "Think about the characters you like from the manga you read. Would you want to keep reading the story if all the characters were the same?"
Satori shook his head, already concluding the point his mother was trying to make. "I get what you're saying, Mom," he grinned from ear to ear, a smile the width of his perfectly straight cherry red bangs, and pushed himself away from the kitchen table. He plopped down onto the wooden floorboard with exuberance. "Life is boring when everyone's the same. Who wants to live a boring life?" He padded over to his room and jumped onto his bed, going back to the first page of this week's issue of Jump. The warm, tingly feeling of adventure took over as he reread the newest chapters of his favorite series for the thirteenth time that week.
A decade later, Satori found himself living in France, where he stood out more than ever before. Not only did he need to learn how to adapt to the country's unfamiliar customs, he also had to learn how to speak its language: the language of love. He found his self-appointed tutor in the bookstore he frequented once he felt comfortable navigating the streets of Paris, which happened to be the same bookstore you browsed when you had a little bit of money to spend.
There you stood alongside him in the graphic novel section, your form hidden under an oversized hoodie, brows scrunched together in what appeared to be deep concentration. You were extremely aware of his presence looming over you, and it created a feeling of unease that sunk into your bones. You braved a glance up at his face, and he quickly turned his head back to stare at the row of the slice-of-life series that lined the very top shelf before him.
Tall, you thought to yourself. That's a very tall man.
You shuffled away from him just a bit, browsing the very bare section of "how-to-draw manga" guides that you knew were second rate to how real manga artists crafted their work.
Moments later, a silvery voice spilled into your consciousness and caught your attention. "Hmm, if only Matsuo-chan realized Hibari's feelings for her in the very beginning..." You can't help but look back up at the lanky man next to you, listening as he changed his speech from French to Japanese. "Then perhaps sweet misery would've never crushed their poor, little hearts." He turned his head to look down at you, heavy lids lowered over brilliantly crimson irises. A cheeky upward curve lifted his thinly shaped lips, and your heart skipped a beat.
Your mind went blank, rendering you speechless.
"I saw the Todai button on your bag," he said, voice now light and cheerful.
You blinked once, twice, then looked down at your messenger bag decorated with various pins from the clubs you took part of in college back in your home country of Japan. Your body relaxed, and a breathy laugh escaped your lips. "Yeah, Tokyo University. Are you from Japan?"
"Yes! Came here from Sendai. How's my French?" He beamed a child-like smile.
You produced your most sarcastic chuckle, turning to lean a shoulder onto the bookshelf so you could face him. "It's kind of terrible."
He mocked a look of despair and dropped his head in feigned embarrassment. You noticed how the pale skin of his cheeks turned a faint shade of red, and you wondered how someone could go from intimidating to adorable in a matter of seconds. Then his eyes snapped back to you, and a toothy grin spread across his face. "Wanna be my tutor?"
Your cheeks flushed pink, and your breath came to a halt again.
"I'm not sure I'm qualified to do something like that," you said, pushing yourself away from the shelf to stand square.
He hummed and straightened his posture, shifting his eyes away from yours, down to your shoes, then back up to your face. "Why not?" The look on his face expressed genuine curiosity.
You decided to pretend you didn't notice his blatant evaluation of your physical form just now.
"I've only been here for a year. I can speak enough French to get by, but I'm not sure I can teach someone else how to speak it."
"So little faith in yourself, little miss."
You furrow your brows at the nickname.
He whipped out a volume of a manga you recently started reading and held it up to you. "You have a pin of this on your bag, too," he said with a wiggle of his sparse eyebrows. "How about you try and get me to start reading this subpar manga by making me read it out loud in French?"
You gave him a look of piqued interest. The possibility of roping someone into reading your favorite series was tempting.
Then he continued, "And we can get yakitori and beer while you teach me?"
The hue of red on your face extends to your forehead.
"You've got pins of beer and yakitori on your bag, too."
A few weeks later, you and Satori were on your sixth date seated across from each other at a cat café in downtown Paris. It took the first three dates (he'd somehow coerced you into) for you to realize that the strange man was just that - strange, but harmless. The one friend you'd managed to make in your year in France introduced you to some very attractive and very gregarious men that you just couldn't see yourself with. Your friend's idea of fun was clubbing and bar hopping through the streets of Paris, and that was unsurprisingly the same kind of fun those men preferred as well.
To you, fun was something much more personal and intimate. Your past experience with relationships lead you to believe that you are meant to be on your own - that there is nobody in this world that will appreciate your oddities and make you as happy as you can make yourself.
Your interests lied in worlds of fiction and fantasy - games, books, movies, and manga, which you learned Satori was just as passionate about as you. Not surprising. He seemed to fit the socially awkward, emotionally inept stereotype you knew most men fit into that also liked anime. He asked too many questions, didn't understand when his questions push personal boundaries, and just wouldn't. Shut. Up.
He did smell nice. You gave him that.
"So little turtle-in-her-shell, do you ever go to conventions?"
You paused your chewing of the last bit of coffee cake you ordered. "Turtle in her shell?"
That carmine, wide eyed gaze of his remained fixed on your face. "You wear that big hoodie all the time like a turtle in a shell."
"It's comfortable," you state. “And yes, I go to conventions.”
Nearly a minute of silence passed between the two of you, and if it weren't for the chatter of others seated around you and the clinking of cups and plates, you'd have really retracted into your "shell" of a sweater.
So you changed the subject, deciding to ask a question that stepped a hair outside of your comfort zone to a man you weren't quite sure about yet.
"Were you just trying to get my attention with that whole "be my tutor" spiel?" You asked following a sip of your iced cappuccino. A little calico feline had chosen you as its scratching post, kneading its nails into the fabric of your jeans. You ignored the little stings of pain for the sake of the cat's enjoyment.
Satori multitasked between feeding himself scoops of his chocolate parfait and playing with the lashing paws of the black cat that sat on the table between you. "Hey now," he said, lightly squeezing the cat's tail before quickly retreating his hand away to avoid the tiny beast's teeth. "I wouldn't know all the different ways to say "I need to take a dump" in French if it weren't for your tutoring thus far, little miss.”
"That's a weird nickname you have for me." The cat on your lap suddenly hopped to the ground, skirting across the ground to the human it suddenly deemed more worthy of its attention than you. You frowned, the action wounding your cold, bitter heart.
"You wouldn't remember me if I called you by just your name, would you?" He used a straw to slurp up the remaining concoction of sugar at the bottom of his cup.
"Do you even remember my real name, Satori?"
He pushed the now empty cup aside and ruffled the black cat's ears with his fingers. It hissed and gave a quick swat of its paw to his hands, then jumped off the table and scurried away.
"I never forget the names of all the cute girls I get to add to my harem," he said with a smirk, his cheeks rising to meet the crinkled corners of his eyes.
You gave him a lopsided glare. "You're kidding, right?"
Satori laughed - a lilted giggle that sent a shiver straight down to your gut, and then his expression darkened and his eyes captured yours in a binding stare. "Would you like to come over and see for yourself?" The way his voice rumbled an octave lower than you've ever heard had you squeezing your hands into nervous balls of tension above your knees.
You frowned. You genuinely couldn't tell if he was being serious. If you hadn't known how much wit and jest the man exuded in nearly every one of his actions, you wouldn't put it past him to be a basement dwelling, serial stalking NEET that kidnapped girls and made them dress up to suit his twisted fantasies. The thought had you questioning every single thing he's said to you so far. He had your number, he knew where you liked to eat, where you liked to drink, and he even knew where you worked. Was this guy like the others?
Suddenly his laughter burst through the air, the sound so boisterous it made you flinch.
"You look so petrified! Are you that gullible to believe everything I say?"
You grit your teeth and grabbed the paper wrapper from his straw to chuck it at his face. "That was so not cool!" You huffed, getting your wallet out to leave a tip on the table.
His laughter continued to tumble through the café, disrupting conversations from nearby customers only for them to direct their attention towards you. You rose to your feet and hurried towards the exit. You absolutely hate being the center of attention!
Satori followed you and matched your stride easily, one of his steps covering three of yours. He stood unbearably close, and if he didn't smell as sweet as the parfait he just ate, you would've shoved him away,
"___-chan," he sang, and you realized it was the first time he said your name. You allowed yourself to relax just a little and slowed your steps. A brief moment of silence settled between the two of you, and he used that moment to gauge your current state of emotional wellbeing.
"___-chan," he said again, this time demanding your attention.
You remained silent. Satori had picked up on so many of your habits in the past few weeks of talking to you and observing your actions that he understood your silence as your cue for, "Go on, I'm listening."
"I'm sorry for upsetting you," he said, bending at his waist so he could meet your line of sight, continuing to stroll alongside you. He must've noticed the creases under your eyes disappear as your tension eased away because that smug little smirk returned to his face. You glanced at him out of the corner of your eye, turning your head to look at him just slightly. A shade of pink colored your cheeks when you met his gaze - his wide, inquisitive eyes studying you with childlike innocence.
You looked forward.
He chuckled and stood up straight, sliding his hands into his jean pockets. "Adorable," he said aloud, further deepening your blush.
You steeled yourself and regained your composure. "Which way do we go?"
Satori hummed. "What do you mean?" he said, bending down again to look at your face. Why must he always have to stare like that when he speaks?
"Aren't we going to your place?"
He grinned. "Really?"
You threw a glare his way. "I'll change my mind if we don't start heading there right now."
Satori grimaced. "___-chan does not cool down so easily after bursting into flames," he mumbled, and you ignored the comment. He sighed. "This way, little miss," he took your hand and pulled you along, bounding across the street as the pedestrian crosswalk countdown hit zero. Your hand wrapped around his, holding on tight to keep up.
You couldn't help but laugh at the stupid sound effects he made as he continued to leap from the street onto the sidewalk, giving you no choice but to run and jump over the curb with him.
Your self-conceived belief that you are all you'll ever have and all you'll ever need to be happy now faced a challenger. This strange person - this bizarre character - punched a hole through the wall you've put so much effort to build on your own.
Satori's twenty-seventh birthday came just after your one year anniversary of the strange... relationship... you managed to maintain despite your ongoing struggle against the warped, pessimistic reality you believed about relationships through years of self-doubt. Slowly but steadily the glass case you built around yourself chipped away due to Satori's freakish ability to see beyond your façade and understand your feelings.
You learned about the bullying he faced in his childhood, and how his mother and high school volleyball team helped him accept the fact that life will always have real jerks with nothing nice to say to test your tenacity. He created a routine of reminding you that you can choose whether or not you let those nasty words bring you down or give you motivation to build your self worth.
Life is more fun when things are a little out of the ordinary. Who wants to be the same as everyone else? These are words you considered when you felt down.
For Satori's birthday, you wanted to do something different, something unique that he would remember about you if you ever went your separate ways.
Since the beginning, you noticed Satori had a thing for cute girls in cosplay. When you told him about your own cosplay projects and showed him pictures, his whole demeanor changed. He became shy - something hardly anyone had ever seen in his usually indiscreet personality.
One thing that helped you feel a little more confident in yourself and your relationship was your experience in physical intimacy. From what you gathered in the little bit of discussion you've had with Satori on the topic, he seemed to have far less experience than you. It was cute how his face went bright red when you managed to pry the details of his past encounters out from the tiny little box of insecurities he still held within. Perhaps it was your turn to bring something out of the wicked Guess Monster (you thought it was a cheesy name but he really took pride in the title whenever he reminisced on his youth at Shiratorizawa Academy) that he kept so carefully hidden away.
"Why are you so shy about this?" You asked the first time you had sex.
Suddenly, the creepy, unwavering eye contact he managed to hold with anyone he came face to face with vanished from the list of unsettling and seemingly unashamed habits and mannerisms that made Satori Tendou so uniquely... Satori.
"The one thing I still have trouble with is..." he looked down at where your naked bodies connected on the plush mattress he swore really was worth the $2,000 he spent. (I don't mean to diss your profession, but do you really make enough money as a chocolatier to afford a bed that expensive?) you asked, immediately regretting having asked the question when a gloomy grey cloud appeared over his head).
"Fucking?" You said, giving him a cocky little smirk.
He buried his face in the crook of your neck with a groan.
"I know you get turned on by cute cosplays of your favorite anime girls."
"...and cute actresses," he muttered, now stuffing his face between your breasts.
That's when you decided to shake things up.
Satori's weekends were usually occupied by work at the sweets factory. He was in the process of getting promoted to a position that freed up his weekends, but it wasn't happening anytime soon.
It was just your luck that his birthday fell on a Saturday this year, your only day off on the weekends. You left your cosplays and wigs back in Japan, boxed up in the bedroom you grew up in. While Satori was slaving away at work, you went shopping. You managed to find a decent sewing machine and plenty of fabric at a (pricey) thrift store on the other side of town. The wigs you looked at were ridiculously expensive - definitely for the high end fashion scene of Paris, not for nerdy cosplayers.
Once you returned to his apartment, you spread all of your findings across his bed and bedroom floor.
A maid's skirt that you will definitely chop up to be anything but modest.
A coreset you honestly weren't sure would fit your little love handles and tummy that lost its tone after all the dessert dates Satori insisted were good for "self care."
Cute devil horns with a pointed tail to match.
Knee high stockings and garters he mentioned as being one of the sexiest things a woman could wear.
And a simple leather collar to put around your neck... with the option to hook a leash.
You looked at the spread before you and wondered how such a quiet, reserved person such as yourself could be so... kinky.
You checked the time on your phone. You had three hours to put something together.
9:43pm Satori:
i'm leaving! boss said he'd let me leave 27 minutes early to celebrate the 27 years of my blessed existence on this planet
@( o・ꎴ・)@
9:44pm

9:44pm Satori:

9:45pm
omg you are so lame! come straight to your room for your present :)
9:45pm Satori: (͠≖ ͜ʖ͠≖) ohooOoOOo??
9:46pm stop sending faces and just get your skinny butt over here
9:46pm Satori:
┏( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)┛┏( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)┛┏( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)┛
You heard the front door open, followed by the thump of Satori's shoes hitting the wall. The sound of the lock sliding into place once he closed the door sent a little shiver up your spine.
You sat on his bed, back against the headboard, legs crossed in front of you. You fixed your little devil horns, made sure the tail was pulled out from underneath your butt, and pushed the coreset up to give your cleavage a boost.
Inhale. Exhale.
You'd never dressed up for something like this before, and you had no idea how Satori would react. You imagined he would immediately pass out with a nosebleed.
His footsteps neared his room, and you heard him in his chipper, sing-song voice. "What is my little ___-chan up to, hmm?"
Once he reached the doorway, his eyes landed on you, and his entire body froze. His jaw went slack, looking like a fool with his mouth wide open in dumbstruck awe at the sight before him.
You gave him your most innocent smile, spreading your legs open just a hair. "Come eat up your dessert, Satori~" you said with a tone so sultry it turned his bones into mush.
Satori's shoulders slumped, and he ran a hand through his matted hair in exasperation. His rusty red locks had grown longer than when you first met him - curling behind his ears and covering his forehead. "Baby..." he said, walking into the room, towards the bed. "Baby, baby, baby," he repeated in English, his favorite language to express excitement. He crawled onto the bed, stopping just before you to sit and cross his legs while he looked you over.
Your skirt was cut so short he could almost see the sweet spot between your legs. The garter straps hugged the meat of your thighs and hooked onto the thigh high stockings that fit the muscle of your calves.
Those pointy little horns sat just a little bit lopsided on your head. That slim, pointed tail traced back to your rear, and the collar around that gorgeous neck of yours drew his eyes down to your barely contained cleavage.
"Baby," he said again, almost a whisper. He leaned forward onto his knees to hover over your body and cradled your face between his hands. Hungry crimson eyes gazed right through you, a shade darker than you've ever seen before. "I'm the luckiest man in the world," he said, then pressed the softest, most gentle kiss to your lips.
Your heart fluttered, hands coming up to thread your fingers into his hair. "Happy birthday," you murmured, bringing him back down for another kiss.
The kiss quickly went from gentle to fervent, his hands slipping up your calves over the stockings, over the garters and up to your thighs, rounding out over your ass. He gave your fleshy cheeks a squeeze and broke the kiss, going straight to your neck, kissing every bit of your exposed skin.
You spread your legs more, asking him to come closer, and he did. Your hands slipped underneath his shirt, lifting it above his ribcage, up to his shoulders. He barely moved back to remove the shirt completely before pressing his lips back to the skin over your collarbones, giving you gentle nips with his teeth.
This was the Satori you wanted in bed.
He sighed into your chest, going down to kiss the swell of your breasts. "My little devil," he said, sucking on the skin right above the coreset. "You're so sexy," he bit down a little bit harder, eliciting a hiss through your teeth. "So beautiful," a kiss over the bite, moving to your other breast. "So irresistible," both of his hands came up underneath your ass to lift you up off of the bed and into his lap. You yelped, forgetting his lithe frame could muster so much strength. He placed you in his lap, leaning forward to run his tongue across your lips and into your mouth once you opened up for him.
"Take your pants off," you mumbled, pulling at the waistband.
"I don't wanna stop kissing you," he whined, hands running up along your waist and over your back to press you up against his chest. At that moment you wished you could feel the warmth of his skin, if it weren't for the coreset.
"How are you gonna fuck me if you don't take them off?"
"Mmmfgh," he groaned, a funny sound that only Satori could make without killing the mood.
He pulled away, then quickly leaned forward to steal another kiss, and pulled away again. You crawled off his lap and sat back, watching him rise to his knees to shimmy pants down his hips. He sat back on his butt and kicked them off then crawled back to you, caging you between his arms and legs.
You pushed him away and gave him a devious smirk. "If I knew dressing up like this would flip your switch, I would've done it a long time ago."
He returned your grin with a wicked gleam of his own, eyelids drooping down to look at you with his most perverted leer. "Achievement unlocked?"
You slapped your hand over his face, pushing him away with a laugh. Spreading your legs again, you drew his attention down to your skirt and flipped it up over your stomach to show him your bare cunt.
He groaned, a mix of a whine and a curse, before diving down to attach his mouth straight to your dampened folds. He licked and sucked, pressing the flat of his tongue against your clit before sucking on the little bud, repeating the motion over and over until you started to writhe.
"I-" you began, letting out a huff of a breath, "would tell you to slow down," your hand flew up to grip onto his hair tightly once he pushed a finger inside you. "But it's your night," you huffed again, a strangled moan leaving your throat. "Go wild, Satori."
He removed his mouth and went straight from one finger to three, rubbing the pads of his fingers up against the walls of your core stretching you out and looking up at you with glossy, hazy eyes. "Best dessert I've ever had," he groaned, watching you tilt your head back, chest heaving as your body started to tremble. He went back down to lap at your folds, replacing his fingers with the muscle of his tongue, pushing it deep into your little hole.
"Fuck, Satori, I'm already close," you sighed, rocking your hips up against his mouth. He pulled away again. "I want you for breakfast," he pushed his fingers back inside your cunt, now sloppy with the slick of his saliva and your arousal. He gave a bruising kiss to the inside of your thigh, "And I want you for lunch," a kiss to your other thigh, "And dinner," he groaned, feeling you clench around his digits, pumping harder, faster - long, nimble fingers reaching the very depth of your core.
Those little horns started to slide off your head as you tossed your head forward and back, watching him work between your legs and thrashing back against the headboard whenever he hit your sweet spot.
You lifted your hips off the bed, urging your body to the peak of pleasure. Your voice kept going, encouraging him to go faster, harder, sighing, panting, moaning.
And just like that, every muscle in your body tightened, and a gush of liquid splashed out over his fingers and onto his tongue, his nose, and his chin. Your moans turned into brief, choked sobs as your orgasm rocked your body. You gripped your fist into his hair, so tight you ended up bringing his body forward.
"God," you groaned out load, dropping yourself back down to the bed, your body now spent. He kissed the spot under your navel, over your belly button, back up to your chest, your neck, and your chin. You felt the tips of his fingers slip underneath one of the stockings and pull up and away, letting it snap back down against your skin. You giggled, bringing him up for a slick, sloppy kiss.
You both remained as you were, his forehead now resting against yours, eyes closed, soft pants easing back to controlled breaths. Your left arm slung over the back of his neck, and your right remained tangled into his messy locks, the pads of your fingers giving a gentle massage to his scalp.
"How do you feel?" you asked, too tired to open your eyes.
"Hmmm," he hummed, not quite coherent enough to give a substantial response.
Suddenly, both of his arms wrapped around your waist, and he flipped himself over so that you were on top, straddling his waist. His back rested flat against the bed, that mischievous look once again casting a wicked shadow over his face. He glanced over to where the little devil horns fell onto the bed and placed them back where they belong atop your head.
"I feel like I'm just a peasant, sentenced to be one of hell's slaves for all eternity."
You grin, catching onto his narrative. "Such an unfortunate fate. You were once a hero, but were corrupted by the temptation of  lust."
Satori grinned, a toothy, mischievous grin, and his eyes narrowed maliciously. "Now I'm cursed with the inability to ever be satisfied..." He breathed a laugh. "We're so fucking weird," he murmured, "Sounding like Team Rocket..."
You leaned down to give him a kiss. "Weird, normal. Whatever. As long as we're having fun, right?"

Masked Love Chapter 1
Sander sides, Rociet, Human/Magical AU
WARNING: mentions of past dehumanising, reference to PTSD flashback??, um bullying reference.
Masterpost
~~18/5/2022 6:37am (Present time)~~
“Janus?”
Janus grumbled, pulling the weighted blanket over his head more as what sounded like his mama's voice filled his too-tired, half asleep brain. “Noooooooooo….”
“Janus! JANUS! I know you're awake up there!!”
“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO” Janus groaned back, pulling the blanket tighter over his head.
“JANNIE IF YOU DON'T LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER I’LL COME UP THERE WITH THE COLD BORE WATER AGAIN~!” Came the singsong voice of his mom, and Janus full on scrambled out of bed, covers sent flying and he had to double check his claws to ensure they didn’t ensnare on anything through his half sleepy, half panicked daze.
“COMING! COMING!! Yesh….” he called, before grumbling, yawning, completely use to the soft popping of his unhinged jaw, forked tongue tasting the air. Waffles…. Mmmmm….
He quickly got ready, body automatically from routine, getting changed into his clothes- a lime turtle neck, black jacket with pins and patches attached, sunflower yellow beanie, skinny black jeans and his boots. He hummed a loose tune as he moved, alike to clock work, moving to turn to his bed, tugging the poor flinged sheets back into the right position, snatching up his stuffed dragon that had fallen onto the floor and placing it on top of his pillow gently.
Janus’s room was, in fact, the attic. His mum and mama weren't… expecting him when he showed up, but they took him in and loved him all the same. The rickety old house they had didn't have enough rooms for Janus to move into when he got older, so his parents spent ages rebuilding the attic for him. You could tell in some places- the seams where the wall met the roof weren't all the same size, the floorboards ran crookedly rather than straight, there were chips in both the walls and the floor where the wood wasn’t smooth.
But janus loved his room. It was cosy- there different metals and CD disks strung up which glinted like precious gems under the sky window, he had a large rainbow flag hanging over his bed in the corner, fairy lights stuck on the wall all around the room. Boxes upon boxes peeked out of his bed, filled to the brim with the most random things, leaves, feathers, stones, shells, bones, name it, Janus probably had it.
Walking to where his room ended, a wall with a human sized hole in the floor, he paused by the mirror, only to wrinkle up his nose in disgust at what he saw staring back. Janus was actually pretty handsome, nice clear tanned skin, brilliant eyes that shined lime and forest green and firefly yellow all at the same time. Chestnut hazel hair that hung in ruffled curls framed his face. He was strong, a little buff and according to his mother and mamma, quite the personality. But there were two things.
Janus’s jaw. It faded into the most horrid shade of olive green, splotches of lime, deep forest green and the colour of dying cactuses for scales, littered across the bottom half of Janus’s face. Two gross dusty pink scars ran from the corners of his mouth, stretching out and curling, nearly to touch his ears, one on each side. Darting in and out of his abnormally large fanged mouth was a forked blue tongue, fading into pink at the back of his mouth, the slightest sign that janus was once human.
He softly sighed, turning away to wander to the wall, and so the holes well, jumping through it to land on the couch flawlessly. “Morning.” He mumbled to the two females cooking and giggling at each other. “Morning' darling~!” called Mamma, smiling brightly. “Did you sleep well, little snek-a-doodle?” Teased his mum, smiling warmly as she parted from her partner to ruffle her adopted son's hair.
Janus smiled back up at her, and couldn't ignore the pang of happiness when all he found in mum's eyes was love. “We made waffles for your big day!” Chimed Mamma, beaming as she worked at the stove.
Ah. Right. High school. Janus groaned, leaning back to painfully donk his head against the wall. “Do I have to go?” He whined. “Yup!” his mum said, popping the ‘p’. Janus rolled his head off the wall, allowing his eyes to drop to problem number two in his life. His hands. Or well…. Talons.
Janus’s hands, a lot like his jaw dyed into that horrid olive colour, splattered with scales. He had four ‘fingers’ instead of five, each ending with a large sharp claw that was almost an ivory green if held in the right light. Scars lined his hand where the scales started, signs that janus wasn’t born with these abnormal features.
His mum then slapped him over the head with a rolled up newspaper. “OW! Hey!!!!!” snapped Janus. His mum raised an eyebrow. “You were pulling the face you make when you're judging yourself. And I'm having none of that. You're beautiful, fullstop.” she narrowed her eyes at him, daring him to prove her wrong. Janus chuckled. “Guilty as charged.” he hummed, standing to walk over to their small island counter.
His mom huffed, nodding, walking alongside her son, combat boots making a soft thumping noise on the tiles. Janus hid a wince as the sound of clicking heels entered his mind.
Click, click, click.
He swallowed, sitting.  “Here you go!!” chirped Mamma, smiling as she placed the plates down. “Thank you dear.” Mom said softly kissing Mamma’s cheek on her way past. “Thanks mamma.” Janus chipped in, trying not to show his teeth while he smiled. Mamma beamed, swirling around to plop down in her seat.
Janus reached out to grab the berries, randomly dropping them over the waffles. He was cautious, ensuring he didn’t open his mouth too wide, taking in small little bites. Mum started talking about what she would be doing while Janus was at school, working on the new barley crops. “Those darn aphids! They've been going off everywhere!!!” Janus slowly chewed on a piece of blue berry.
“I think you're gonna need to get some pest spray mum.” Janus pointed out. Mamma nodded. “Do you want me to pick some up honey? I’m going into town anyway for some more mango seeds.”
Janus smirked against his milk glass, washing down the waffles. “Again with the Mangos Mamma?”
Mamma shrugged, smiling. “I want to make some jams! And maybe I might try making mango sorbet again.” Janus grinned. “Yes please!” His gaze flickered to the clock on the wall, and he sighed. “Well, as much as I hate it, I should go.” he said with a huff, shovelling the last of the waffles into his mouth and drowning the milk.
“Okay darling, have a nice day!” Mamma said with a smile. “See you this afternoon ‘kay snek-a-doodle? You’ll help me with the cows again?” Janus smirked, collecting his plate and glass. “Absolutely.” he stated, placing his dishes in the sink. “See you this afternoon!” he called, snatching up his gloves and mask off their hanger and then scooping up his bag.
He swung his bag half on, fumbling to put on his yellow gloves. They were bulky and too big to allow room for his claws, a black band around the start of the four fingers and wrist to prevent slipping and looked ridiculous, but it was better than exposing his features to the world. He had to be careful, pausing to ensure none of his scales got caught on the fabric. He then put on his mask, a simple also yellow fabric that covered his mouth and nose. He then twisted to reach into his front pocket of his bag, pulling out his earphones and lime mp3 player, shoving the buds into his ears and turning it on, blasting the music at the highest volume.
[ 🎶 Looking for an exit in this world of fear
I can see the path that leads away
Mama never left, and daddy needs me here
I wish the wind would carry a change
Looking through the window to a world of dreams
I can see my future slip away
Honey you won't get there if you don't believe
I wish the wind would carry a change 🎶 ]
He wandered through the fields of crops and fields of animals, waving a hello to the farmer next door. Michel, his name was, he grows the best peaches. He guessed that there was a satisfying crunch as Janus jumped from a small ledge down onto the orange autumn leaf-covered road. Wandering along the side of the road, Janus quietly hummed along to his music all the way to the bus stop. He quickly checked the suns position, having done it many many times, relieved to find he was on time and the bus should be here any minute.
[ 🎶 I've had enough
I'm standing up
I need, I need a change
I've had enough
Of chasing luck
I need, I need a change 🎶 ]
Sure enough the death machine, painted yellow and screeching nearly as loud as its passengers came swerving around the corner, somehow audible through Janus’s music, metal rusted gears screaming as the beast came to a halt. That thing was definitely gonna kill people one day. Janus huffed, climbing the rickety steps and flashed his card at the bus driver, who looked like he had been going for six months without sleep and would snap someone's neck.
They traded nods, having known each other since Janus first ‘moved’ to the country. They never really spoke to each other, but traded nods, ‘hey’s’, and ‘mood’s’ so he was cool. Janus sat right behind the bus driver, dumping his bag next to him so no one would take the seat next to him. Not that it was necessary, everyone actively avoided him. He then maintained his death glare, slipping it on as easily as putting on his mask.
Some kids, janus found, take enjoyment in throwing things at the bus driver, so janus took it upon himself to protect the bus driver from the nuisances, and in return, once the bus driver found out, he would keep the passengers from taking the spot so Janus wasn't forced to sit next to anyone.
[ 🎶 I'm setting fire to the life that I know (I know)
Let's start a fire everywhere that we go (we go)
We starting fires,
We starting fires till our lives are burning gold 🎶 ]
Janus sat, guarding the busdriver and spacing out till he felt the bus sharply halt. Hip hip hooray for hell. He sighed, standing up and wandered off the bus, bidding farewell to the busdriver with a small nod of the head. He turned his attention to his new problem.
The school's shadow engulfed him standing tall over him, and a part of janus feared it may crumble and crush him. People were chatting, boys flirting and betting, bullies shoving random people and dropping curses. Janus’s personal hell. Well, here goes nothing!
[ 🎶 I've had enough
Of chasing luck
I need, I need a change 🎶 ]

It had been well over a month since the mission and like she had feared Raphael hadn’t returned to her the next night, or the next, or even a week after that sending her into a deeper depression with every passing day that she waited by the door for her husband
She had their daughter to care for, had schooling and dance lessons to continue for the child, a nursery that her and the turtle were wanting to set up together for the little one coming soon but she couldn’t
She knew she had to keep going but she could no longer sleep staying up all night hugging his pillow telling herself this was all going to turn out okay long as she kept her faith not believing he was really gone, eating was a task she struggled with but forced food down if nothing but for his child going to care for her babies if nothing more, chores were slacked on until she was wondering the lair through the night trying to keep her mind busy from thinking the worse when her love didn’t walk through the door
Her heart ached wishing she had just begged him for one last dance, had kissed him again, maybe had just ran to him before he stepped out the door if only to tell him one more time she loved him
She shattered finally the morning she woke up after passing out from exhaustion to feel their little one kicking seeing her belly moving realizing he had never felt the movements would never feel the kick of what she was hoping was a son, just how much he was going to miss of the kids growing up unable to get off the bed as she cried until she heard her little girl rushing to get her out of bed forcing a smile
The hardest part was the questions her curious little turtle kept asking like; when her daddy was coming home to dance with her and momma again? Where her uncles were and if she could play Mikey’s games? Why she was crying and Grandpa Splinter wouldn’t come out of his room? It broke her to tell her baby they would be back soon while trying not to break down pushing through the day in hopes for good news to come
And finally it did
Slowly his brothers returned one by one each in bad shape
Michelangelo had came home first a few day after she had marked that month off the calendar screaming out for her when he didn’t see or hear anybody dragging himself in with a shattered ankle his head bleeding from a large gash where he had looked to have hit something hugging her tight when she had grabbed him sobbing into his chest glad to see him alive, trying to flirt with the woman as she stitched him up and had to set his ankle getting a sad smirk from her; even with a head injury he was still the same Mikey
His arms surrounding her was a momentary relief she never realized she needed
The stressed lines in her face deepened as he kissed her cheeks, without meaning too she finally asked what her heart dreaded but he couldn’t tell the woman anything of Raph more then they had been split up Raph with Donnie he with Leo to cover the front, seeing her face sinking further he quickly mumbled that Leo had pushed him out of the way before an explosion had sent him flying but that he didn’t remember anything before waking up under a bunch of rubble from the building that had went down
He hadn’t had contact with the red masked turtle since the night they left
A few days passed with no word of the others but the fact that Mikey was home gave her hope happy to see he was healing quickly and complaining when he couldn’t get up without crutches, a week later she was startled out of her thoughts in the middle of the night while holding a soft blanket Raphael had knitted for the baby by a crash in the living area, singing to keep her calm in hopes he would hear her if he did come home, thinking her husband was in the den she jumped up rushing down stairs not seeing anything
There was a second she panicked thinking the Foot had found their home going for a bat Casey had left months ago walking further seeing the light in her father in laws room aluminate a stretch of concrete that was wet moving over to find Donatello laying near the pool soaked to the bone and bleeding from a few wounds he looked to had treated and bandaged at some point groaning as she touched his shoulder looking up with a smile.
She physically dropped hugging him as the genius forced his body up nuzzling her when she clung to him tightly laughing between sobs as he tried to lighten the mood
She helped him to the couch drying the turtle off as he gave her part of the story as she fixed him up having to force his leg straight to pop his knee cap into place again wrapping it up as the turtle accounted how he had disabled their computers but before he could find out what they were plotting he had been attacked by the soldiers – how Raph had protected his shell making him retreat when they had been over run but past that they had lost track of one another when the second wave of reinforcements arrived telling her that last he had seen him he was with Leo
Him and Leo didn’t always see eye to eye on things but they were one hell of a team together able to work together perfectly even when they were at odds so if he was with the eldest she knew he was coming home – Raph would come back because she trusted Leo to bring him home safe knowing there would be a chance they’d be arguing over who saved who’s ass out there but she welcomed that coming fight if just to see them smile as they joked with one another
Slowly she started to wait by the door less no longer fearing for him she fell back into routine until the morning two weeks later she had been making breakfast turning to place the eggs on the counter looking up having thought she was alone suddenly screaming as she dropped the pan seeing a bloodied Leonardo in the doorway leaning on the frame, he looked so tired looking up at her his normally bright blue eyes dulled calling out to her so weakly she hadn’t moved thinking it was just a nightmare until the eldest reached out his eyes rolling back before he hit the unforgiving ground unconscious
Her screams pulled the others to the kitchen as she rushed to his side seeing most of his wounds were old from the battle on their mission getting Mikey to lay his head on her lap as Donnie worked on his wounds trying to wake him looking out to the way he seemed to have come praying she’d see Raphael but he wasn’t there
It was easy to see he needed medical attention soon unsure how bad his wounds were from all of the gore but  she could feel he was burning up his skin too hot, it took both younger turtles to get him up unstrapping his gear leaving it where it landed to hurry off getting a bed ready for him already in nurse mode when they laid him down laying a blanket over him as they placed ice on him trying to slowly bring his temperature down hearing him groan finally from the cold wiping off the blood from his face calling his name softly
For a moment it felt as if everything was going fast and slow in the same second
He didn’t respond to her for a moment her mind tricked her into thinking his chest wasn’t moving checking for a pulse finally finding one calling for Donnie to get her some oxygen hearing her little girl crying at the door quickly telling her to go play in her room as she tried to get to her uncle wanting him to hold her
Mikey saw the torn expression in her face as she tried to get Leo back but was going between the nurse and mom within her begging in tears for her baby to go out of there when for a moment Leo wasn’t breathing, she thanked him as he grabbed her taking her to her room explaining Uncle Leo wasn’t feeling too well
Her sweet voice asking where daddy was shattered her on the spot becoming numb as she worked getting him on fluids after locating the worst wound seeing the skin had festered now understanding why he was sick spotting the set in infection finally finding her voice just as Splinter entered the room to see his oldest son
“D-Donnie…” pointing for her medical bag the woman was mentally thanking god and whoever had convinced her to get her medical license; having never thought she’d be having to use it but was grateful she knew what she was doing having Donnie give her a hand in cleaning the worst as Splinter cleaned him up flinching at the extent of the infection in just one smelling something foul, grabbing up a tool she set to scraping away the infection gunk as much as possible while cleaning it thoroughly
To keep herself calm through the process she talked to the oldest turtle seeing once Donnie had cleaned the rest of his wounds he had started dressing them with plenty of ointment sighing once his breathing evened out still unconscious asking her if she needed him to take over but she couldn’t answer having him hold Leo on his side as she repaired his shoulder that had a nasty cut from a sharp object seeing it had torn clean through everything skin, muscle tissue, ligaments… someone had tried to take his arm off
Cleaning it was an unforgettable experience she wished she could rid from her memories her eyes burning and head pounding at one point nearly losing her mind as he started seizing up one hand locked around her wrist screaming even if she was sure he was sedated but she kept talking to Leonardo telling him he was okay, begging him to hold in there as stitches were placed her hands shaking so bad at one point she had to stop heart breaking in thinking if he was this torn up, if he had come home like this what would Raph look like
Three hours later he was finally pieced back together and resting calmly but for some reason the woman couldn’t leave his side holding his hand unable to move as the others told her she needed rest but she couldn’t function everything just felt numb
Mikey had brought her daughter in at some point to let her see Leo the little girl strangely calm as she reached for him finally getting placed on the bed and told to sit still so as not to hurt her uncle
She tried, really desperately tried to tell herself this was all a nightmare but it wasn’t and like she had been weeks ago she was panicking in thinking the worst for days on end scared what would come when Leo woke up, finally unable to shoulder the pain she slumped forward laying her head down shattering beside the leader’s bed pleading for herself to just wake up
She didn’t remember falling asleep but when she opened her eyes she was beside Raphael on the couch safe in his arms watching their favorite movie giggling making him jolt as she jumped him kissing her turtle passionately while he sat there shocked finally just pulling her close returning the affection asking her what she was doing hearing the husk in his breathless voice grinning as she just hugged him telling him she loved him so much saying everything she regretted not telling him the last time they had touched until he chuckled whispering she could never lose him, she almost called him a liar but instead holding him for as long as she could asking him to stay with her
Some hours later she felt somebody petting her hair groaning telling Raph to let her sleep a bit longer nuzzling into his hand until her eyes snapped open looking up at the gentle touch seeing Leo still had his eyes closed but he seemed more relaxed but as the woman reached out the leader took a deeper breath smirking as she touched his hand mumbling he was insulted, she got up fast feeling the same hand pulling her forward into a hug clinging to her as she cried into his neck kissing his cheek hearing him whispering before tears were soaking her cheeks making her look over seeing the one thing she never had
Leonardo – in tears apologizing and pleading for forgiveness
She shook her head trying to wipe the tears away smiling telling him he was fine that she had stayed on her own but as he looked up she saw something in his blood shot sapphire orbs that had her frozen on the spot her heart already not holding up in suddenly understanding shaking her head, his bandaged fingers touching her cheek watching him break as she refused to believe what she was hearing
“I couldn’t get to him in time”
Her breath left her in a distraught scream as she stumbled back shaking her head repeatedly saying ‘no’ he had to have some kind of brain damage and was confused but as he recounted the last few minutes of the battle it settled in her chest he was reliving it even though the woman could see him trying to keep it together but lost his ability to speak as he forced out the last thing he could physically remember
He couldn’t find Mikey after the bomb had gone off his shouts for the youngest turtle as he searched the piles for his baby brother had drawn Raphael to him after he had made Donnie run for it both of them searching franticly finally being forced to run when The Foot had ambushed them driving them to retreat into a trap both of them had been looking for a way out losing more ground before the red masked turtle had pointed to a window yelling for Leo to go as he held off the enemy
As he got it open calling for Raph to retreat he saw his brother becoming over ran, going back to help him he hadn’t taken two steps before the building had exploded sending him through the wall and into a free fall crashing on a roof feeling bricks and debris pelting him as the middle of the building went up in flames
She remembered screaming that he was lying, pleading with him to tell her this was all a hoax but as she got closer he just pulled her into his chest telling his sister in law he was so sorry seeing the rest of his family running in to find her curled up against his chest sobbing her heart out in knowing her husband was lost
After having to finally explain to their baby daddy wasn’t coming home the questions and tears had forced her to admit he was gone forever and right there trying to comfort a sobbing little girl she collapsed hugging their girl mourning she couldn’t make this better
She was completely numb after that night spending two days in confinement inside her room unable to walk away from his area
Their memories hung on the walls
The love she had felt in their bed
His scent and clothes and the way he had always been there
For two days she couldn’t force her body up keeping her daughter beside her through the sleepless nights until Mikey or Donnie would come to get her to let the woman have a moment to grieve without having to hold it in to keep the others from seeing her crack all over again, when she finally could get up she grabbed his hoodie putting it on and just curled up on his side breathing in his scent until she could let sleep take her
Leo came to see her once he was healed up enough to get around on his own rubbing her back as she laid there silently promising they would still help her, his voice growing thick as he laid down beside her hugging her close telling her he’d always be there like the rest of them swearing the kids would always have a father but it shattered her to know Raph wouldn’t get to see them grow up
Her due date was getting closer and it started to dawn on her she would be giving birth without him repeatedly swearing she wouldn’t be able to do it without her husband holding her hand but Donnie couldn’t help reminding her this was going to happen no matter how much she tried deny it which only deepened the depression that only her children could pull her from talking to the little one in her belly telling him of his father and how wonderful he was
She wanted to see him in her dreams but every time she closed her eyes he was gone from there too a distant memory she was dying to see just one more time but he was gone from there as well, where he had been haunting her dreams since the night they had left Raphael was gone from her happy place
A week passed and when she could finally walk out of the room she stopped at the bottom of the stairs seeing his family had made a memorial for him right there by the weight room his smiling face in a photo had her stuck in the middle of the room never seeing Leo coming up behind her but the moment he touched her she went limp feeling him holding that much tighter helping her to take the steps forward until she was able to reach out grabbing the picture of them from their wedding day seeing how happy he looked as she walked down the aisle laughing sadly at how his eyes had held so much love that day going back to their room alone clutching that picture as she fell to the floor
Life seemed to be moving forward but she was caught in that night he had walked out the door; Donnie had gave her a check up getting a good look at the infant she was carrying wanting to tell her what the baby was but she refused to know wanting to keep to what they had promised going to find out together when she gave birth, at one point she had called him for breakfast turning when Leo had said her name realizing she had set the table for him and made his favorite, when asked one night the woman had said he was coming home soon making dinner in a daze before Mikey was hugging her from behind
There were days she swore she heard him talking to her, several days started with his deep sleepy voice in her ear, one night after getting her daughter down for bed she had thought she heard him yelling her name rushing downstairs to see nobody was home, the day before she was talking to him and turned to find nobody had been talking back
She was just starting to think she was going crazy when one night she heard their song stumbling down to the den to see Donnie had passed out at his computer accidently hitting the music file she had forgot was on his monitor going to turn it off but the tune stopped her as she looked over to the memorial taking in his face
As if on it’s own her limbs moving the female back thinking of him as she pulled the red bandana of one of Raph’s old masks he had gave her for her hair down covering the already wet eyes that were letting more tears fall moving slowly around knowing where not to go dancing like they had that last night her emotions being let out as she moved crying loudly when she got to the part that required a partner but as she started to drop a pair of hands landed on her waist keeping her up
She didn’t want to turn around to be disappointed but the press of a hard chest plate on her back made her take the next step finding the figure behind her moving at the same time doing her best to imagine it was the man her heart longed for
Before she knew it she was being guided through the movements by her partner every step made at the exact time whoever had decided to step in was taking the steps like they had done them a million times supporting her heavily pregnant body like she weight nothing
The rough feeling of the calloused fingers on her wrist as she was spun and the height had her thinking it was Leo who was usually the one still up with her lately hoping he wasn’t hurting himself to give her a moment of happiness
Completely suffocated by the fragrance of Raph’s hoodie she didn’t smell the smoke under the cologne she had sprayed just to keep him with her, the gentleness in the care the one holding her showed, the way those big hands cradled her larger body just perfectly, the hot breath on her neck that for a moment had her so calm she forgot where she was taking anything she could get
For just a second she was in heaven not a care in the world
For a moment she didn’t remember the hell that was taking over inside her
She smiled through the tears soaking his mask pleading for it not to end too soon even though the music stopped finding they kept swaying with her
The startled shuffle as Donnie jumped in his roller chair in front of her made her snap to attention pulling the fabric off looking up but was met with the three turtles staring at her in disbelief leaving her confused
Leo who had come down to look for her when he didn’t see her in her bed when heard her sobbing erratically already in tears at the sight behind her, Mikey had just woke up after watching his brother’s favorite movie series going to go upstairs to cuddle up with his sis needing comfort when he saw something moving through the lair heading for the woman never noticing his older brother at his side choking out something she couldn’t hear, Donnie had finally startled hearing the music playing loudly just before it ended waking up and becoming frozen in his chair his eyes wide looking past her like there was a monster standing behind her
That was when it hit the woman somebody was still dancing with her eyes going wide as a soft kiss was pressed to her neck hearing a deep growl from behind her she had never thought she would hear a pair of strong arms wrapped tightly around her body
“Thought I’d never get ta ‘ave this dance with ya again” the deep voice against her ear had her in tears so convinced it was all in her head finally turning around slowly seeing Raphael standing before her, both hands trembling while taking in the massive turtle who was beaten and bloodied, his clothes burned and torn, a deep gash in his cheek that had healed wrong but – he was alive
She couldn’t breath stumbling back scared her mind was making her see him now on top of hearing her love when he wasn’t really there looking up at him as he moved forward so slowly his expression so soft compared to the hard look he wore all the time seeing the broken look on his mates face as he reached out to touch her stopping just inches away letting her come to him but the moment he touched her she trembled his name coming out so softly under her breath he hadn’t heard it at first
She touched his hand breathing rigidly so shaken she was scared she was about to wake up “R-Raphie… is it-”
He nodded seeing she was so guarded and stiff “It’s me baby… ’m right here it’s me” the turtle pulled her forward smiling as she seemed to latch onto him touching his face repeatedly choking out a wail as he grabbed her fast hugging her tight his lips instantly on hers showering her in affection laughing as she kissed his face looking him over not even caring he looked like something out of a horror flic smiling like he could see she hadn’t done in so long
Before he had came in that entrance he had tried to clean himself up just in case his little girl was up but he was still a mess it had taken him a while to get home his body killing him having to dig himself out from under the building that had went down on him yelling for his older brother not wanting to think Leo was under the ruble
He hadn’t been able to walk for a week having smashed his ankle in trying to jump out of the way after the first blast the wall probably saving his life even though it had almost crushed him a shattered support being the only thing that had kept it from smashing him under the weight his phone destroyed in the explosion and no way to contact the others he had been held up in a abandoned substation miles away
He had been through being severely sick due to infection without anyone to help finally passing his fever and forcing himself to get up, it’d been hell walking but once he had numbed it had been easier needing to get home had him pushing through until he couldn’t go having to rest but the moment he caught his breath he had gotten right back up needing to get back to his family fearing the other’s hadn’t made it home, needing to see his daughter if only one more time, swearing he was going to dance with his girl again
Looking down at her he apologized telling her he had come back even if he hadn’t promised he had made it home like he hoped she had believed kissing her as she placed his hand on her belly before feeling the kicks his golden orbs growing misty as he looked down seeing his little one was moving a lot seeming to know who was squeezing mommy
Leo stumbled forward touching his brother’s arm gaining his attention chuckling as he pulled him into a hug showing that softer side, he had sat his girl down hugging his brother before he got tackled by the other two groaning in pain yelling for them to chill but he didn’t push them off chuckling seeing her laugh as his brothers gave him all kinds of hell over taking so long to get home glancing over as she lowered herself beside him kissing him softly before a small voice made them all look over
Standing at the bottom of the stairs was the little girl still looking sleepy calling for her momma; the noise had to have woke her up if it hadn’t been her recent nightmares daddy wasn’t there to chase away
She stumbled forward each of his brothers moving as he sat up seeing this baby looking at him almost like he was a stranger as he got up with some trouble until Leo pulled him with his good arm grunting in effort to not show he was hurting
He chuckled getting on his knee that popped loudly from the pressure but he didn’t even flinch calling her name as she looked to her mom and uncles then back to him holding his hands out seeing tears as she hugged her turtle doll closer “C’mere daddy needs a hug” the woman hugged his arm as the little girl slowly took a step whimpering out a cry unsure she was seeing him before he clapped his hands waving her forward “C’mon kitten ya gonna make me wait”
Her golden green eyes lit up at his nickname for her realizing she wasn’t imagining him “D-Daddy…” he nodded chuckling as she pulled her gown up off the floor running forward tackling him being met with the unmovable wall he was as he hugged her tight trying to hide the tears as she cried into his neck loudly clinging to him like he would disappear if she let go “DADDY! MY DADDY HOME!”
He pulled his girl into his side kissing her and his baby squeezing them both nuzzling into his wife’s chest as she held him when he finally broke laughing through the tears nodding as she whispered to him that she was never letting him go again
He needed a shower bad wanting to just be in something more comfortable, his injuries needed to be looked at but right then all he wanted was to stay right here for a moment longer kissing her belly whispering his praises and affections to his goddess thanking heaven he hadn’t lost this chance

I still read every night before bed and when I love a story, I burn my way through it in a matter of days. Hours if I really put my mind to it.
It is scientifically proven that reading is one of the most relaxing things you can do (more than other things even) - it slows down your breathing and your heart rate, which is why it's perfect to incorporate in a bedtime ritual.
Here's the list of my favourite books of the past year or so.
*Affiliate links below!
Throne of Glass Series - Sarah J Maas
This series is not as steamy as the Court-series I wrote about in the previous blog post. However, technically speaking this is definitely a better saga, if you will.
Sarah J Maas has created this epic tale around Selena Galynthius in an epic world full of old-time fantasy characters like elves and fae and witches and wyverns. It's very cool.
The series wrapped up with a stunner of a finale last fall and it was some of the best fantasy I've read in a while. Book 1 is kind of weirdly written if you compare it to the rest, but in book two she really gets the show on the road.
If you like epic fantasy? This is IT.
I'm thinking about buying this box myself (I've read them on Kindle but these are so epic I want them on print) but if you want to start, start with Throne of Glass AND Crown of Midnight.
The Meredith Gentry Series - Laurel K Hamilton
I'm including this one more for lolz than for anything else.
I LOVED these when I was a teen, such smutty books in a fantasy world. Turns out it was either hormones kicking in or I just had terrible taste back then. (Probably both.)
These are TERRIBLE!
They make zero sense, the story is incredibly convoluted and I don't even think the sex scenes are that well-written or hot anymore. They're no Court of Mist and Fury, if ya know what I mean.
I reread them for old time sake, and if you're into Harlequin-esque elf books with a lot of descriptives and dialogues, in a story that only BARELY goes somewhere, go off I guess. If not, steer clear.
Bol.com is like 'fuck you we're not selling this drivel' but Amazon Kindle always comes through for us perverts.
Good Omens - Thierry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman
When I saw that wickedly cool trailer for Good OmensI immediately started reading Good Omens. I had had it on my Kindle forever, and it really is a classic.
It's fun, funny, great story and great writing. I'm going to do that online storytelling class by Neil Gaiman and read a lot more by them both the upcoming year.
I've read Neil Gaiman's American Gods, The Ocean By The End of the Lake and Graveyard Boy, but nothing by Thierry Pratchett yet.
I'm excited.
Where to buy? A paperback at Bol.com is just 8,99 right now.
(Also, WATCH THE AMAZON PRIME SERIES, it is SO FUN!)
Caraval & Legendary - Stephanie Gaber
A magical story about two sisters (there's quite a few books I read the past year with sisters) get invited to a once-a-year, exclusive magical live performance where the audience participates. The protagonist has been obsessed with this Caraval as long as she lives. To escape a betrothal of her sister, they go and during the Caraval a lot happens that changes everything.
Apparently there is a third book called Finale, which makes me think I maybe haven't finished Legendary and I need to, because I thought there would just be two.
You can buy the paperback here, and if you want to read it in Dutch you can too: My favorite online writer to follow on Instagram, Chinouk Thijssen translated the book!
Circe - Madeline miller
I've read both this one, Song of Achilles and Galatea. The only one I wouldn't really recommend was Galatea, I just didn't really think that one is interesting. The other two are, though.
I love Greek mythology and when people retell a classic in an interesting new way, and Madeline Miller has done so with this book. I really liked Circe.
The paperback is only 9,70!
Song of Achilles - Madeline Miller
One f the most beautiful and tragic lovestories I've ever read. I recommend it to everyone, especially anyone who likes Greek mythology. It's about Patrocles and Achilles, and their lovestory.
I cried like a baby during the last bit.
If you want to purchase this stunning story in paperback, click here.
A Little Life - Hanya Yanagihara
SPEAKING OF CRYING.
If you'd like to be emotionally destroyed and sob incontrollably through the entire last half of this book, go read 'A Little Life'
At first I resisted, and during the first chapters of this book I was mostly confused about who was who, but once you've got it, it is one of those stories that touches you, breaks you and then changes you.
English paperback here, Dutch paperback here.
Fireblood Trilogy - Elly Blake
I read this only a few weeks ago and I burned through these books, if you will. Finished all three in less than a week.
These are SO GOOD. The world is divided into three types of people: Regular, Firebloods and Frostbloods, the last two types having magic abilities that they train and can use, and with the Firebloods and Frostbloods being enemies of sorts.
A Fireblood girl is taken by Frostbloods to help them take down their evil king, but it turns out everything is a lot more complicated than it seems.
Lots of plot twists you can't easily see coming, a lot of friendships, a little romance, and a really good story. It's absolutely lovely.
Paperback here, Amazon Kindle below.
The Bear and the Nightingale Series - Katherine Arden
The prettiest trilogy I've read all year.
Set in Russia, a fairytale of sorts, and the protagonist is a strong girl who believes in freedom, her own decisions and heart, and who falls in love.
Three books to enjoy and swoon over. Try the first one hereor get the ebook below.
Small Spaces - Katherine Arden
By the same author as the previous trilogy, perhaps a children's book, but a good scary story that is easy to read.
A girl who has lost her mom goes on a field trip and turns out, farms and scarecrows are still as scary as they were during Children of the Corn.
I highly recommend; easy and fun scary story, fun to read with a child I think.
You can get it here, or here:
The Mermaid's Sister - Carrie Anne Noble
This is such a beautiful story.
You meet Clara, Maren and O'Neill. Claire was brought to her aunt by a stork, Maren came out of a shell, and O'Neill was found by the woman's husband under an apple tree. As Maren slowly turns into a mermaid, Clara and O'Neill try desperately to save Maren and return her to the ocean.
It's kinda like Frozen with the sisterly love, but has more to it.
Easy to read, with lovely and beautiful sentences, and I cried at the end.
Where to buy? For 12 euros you can buy the paperback here, or the Kindle version for 3.99$ below!
Numina Series - Charlie N Holmberg
This is such a good series, I can't wait for the third book - it's coming out in September.
In this world, magic is a scary underground thing where you need slaves to get possessed by numen, fiery beings from a different plane of existence.
A girl escapes her master who as it turns out, wants to bring the worst numen from that plane to destroy the world. With the help from a charming thief, she tries to save the fellow slaves and prevent world destruction.
Get the first one hereor below:
Magi Bitter, Magic Sweet - Charlie N Holmberg
By the same author, really interesting and pretty fairytale, kind of.
It's about a magical baker, and you should just read it. Buy it here, or below. It's cheaper on Kindle and it's such a breezy book, it's fine as an ebook.
My Absolute Darling - Gabriel Tallent
Horrible but gripping story about a girl called Turtle who grows up with her survivalist nut job of a dad in the woods, and then meets a few boys and a little girl that change the course of her life.
It's hard to read sometimes because the writer has made Turtle into what into my eyes is an eerily accurate portrait of the abused and traumatised. You're rooting for her but you don't always understand her, and you don't always understand her but you're always rooting for her, you know?
You can buy the paperback here for 12 euros or do as I do and buy the Kindle version via the link below!
The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein - Kiersten White
I'm a sucker for reinventions of the classics, especially if suddenly we see everything from a woman's perspective. This story is about Elizabeth Frankenstein, the girl who grew up with the boy who will become Doctor Frankenstein and who loves him, and goes looking for him when he disappears from the place he was studying.
It's a very interesting and scary story, and it shows exactly how sometimes the things we do for love, are the very things that make the person we love into a monster.
I'm going to read a lot more by Kiersten White upcoming year, that's for sure.
You can buy the paperback herefor 12 euros, or click below for the Kindle version, for only 8.32$. Fun fact: The copy of the actual story about Frankenstein's monster by Mary Shelby is the second half of the book!
Strange the Dreamer & Muse of Nightmares - Laini Taylor
By the author of some of my favorite books EVER (Daughter of Smoke and Bone series), such a well-written and ethereal story. Full of legends, poetry and love.
It is well-written, heartbreaking and especially during Muse of Nightmares it is so great to see how everything pans out.
Buy the paperback herefor 12 euros , or below:
Grim Lovelies - Meghan Shepherd
I literally finished these last weekend, and really fun! Good story, set in France, in which 'Beasties' are animals turned people and used to help magical people like witches.
Can't wait for the sequel that is coming out in a couple of days!
Get the paperback here, or below.
A Blade So Black - L. L. Mckinny
This is such an interesting take on Alice in Wonderland, scarier and darker, but also more fun. The series is called the Nightmare Verse, I haven't gotten around to reading the second instalment: A Dream So Dark.
Incredible about this book is that the protagonist is a black girl and the book also touches upon the horrible terror that you can get attacked or killed just because of the color of your skin.
You can buy the paperback for 11,99, or on Kindle below.
The Luminous Dead - Caitlin Starling
This might be one of the most terrifying books I have ever read. It combines a few of my greatest fears (caving, being underground and diving) into a goosebump-filled adventure as you follow Gyre, an inexperienced caver who lied on her resume in order to get this job, go deeper and deeper into the cave -- as well as into the complicated backstory of her handler, Em.
Guys. It is so scary. And so good. Go read it. It's 14 euros here, or available on Amazon.
The Girl From Everwhere - Heidi Heilig
Timetravel always gives me a headache, but this piratey-spin on int is really fun.
You can buy the paperback for 9,99 on Bol.com and I was pleased to find out there is a second book now: The Ship Beyond Time. Definitely reading this as soon as I finish Frost!
Phew, a whale of a post
As always, I'd love it if you reciprocate with your own (non)-fiction recommendations: Let me know in the comments below what books you loved the past year.
Have a lovely Sunday!

Secret of the Sewers: Welcome to the Battle Nexus
"Cannonball!" Mikey shouted, taking a running jump off a small rock outcropping.
He splashed down in the crisp, clean waters of the lake outside Casey's Grandma's farmhouse, joining the Hamato family as they swam. As the orange turtle surfaced, he spat out a small stream of water, reclining on his shell happily.
"Man, this is the life." Mikey let out.
"I have to agree with him." Raph spoke up, floating on an inner tube Don had found in the garage. "This is nice."
"I'm glad Casey's mom let us borrow the farmhouse for the week." Hisako spoke up, letting her hair out of its usual ponytail before slipping into the water herself. "After the weeks- no, months we've had, we needed this."
"That's for sure." Leo agreed, climbing onto a small rock jutting out of the water. "It's nice to just kick back and not have any villains to fight for once."
"I can't believe that Shredder's really gone for good." Donny commented, sitting on the dock and kicking his feet in the water.
"I agree Donatello." Splinter told him, sitting on the grass in a meditative stance. "Saki's hold over our family is finally gone, and Miwa has found her place amongst the ranks of the true Foot Clan."
"I hope she's doing ok." Leo voiced.
"You kidding, she's a Hamato." Raph reminded him. "And a Hamato can make it through anything."
"Cheers to that, bro." Leo declared.
As the group continued talking, Mikey swam under the water towards the docks. As Donny continued kicking the water, Mikey grabbed his foot and pulled him in. Donny fell in with a yelp, coming up for air while coughing slightly.
"Mikey!" he screamed. "What the shell was that for?!"
"No reason you should be dry as a bone while we're all out here where a turtle should be." Mikey argued.
"Maybe I didn't want to get wet." Donny countered.
"Maybe you did, maybe you didn't," Mikey replied. "But you are, so nah, nah, nah-nah, nah."
"Oh, you are so gonna get it!" Donny declared tackling him.
They two went down into the water, the other three siblings grinning.
"Water fight!" they announced in unison, diving into the fray.
The five siblings all went at it, splashing and ducking one another without mercy. Splinter watched from the grass, shaking his head while smiling contently.
"Kids..." he said to himself.
Just then, the water began to swirl, forming a small whirlpool in the center of the lake. The siblings all surfaced, thankfully just on the outside of the freshly formed vortex.
"Hisako…?" Donny questioned.
"It's not me, I swear." she told him.
That's when the water began to funnel upward, opening and allowing the strangest looking man to emerge. He seemed to be almost translucent, his entire body shimmering as if it was made of water. He was wearing a traditional Japanese outfit reminiscent of the gyoji from Sumo Wrestling, as well as a white mask that covered his entire face.
"What the…" Raph let out.
"Hamato Clan of Dimension 5th Earth." the strange man announced. "On behave of the Daimyo, master of the Battle Nexus, I have come to extend an invitation to participate in the Tournament of Champions."
"Battle Nexus?" Donny questioned.
"Daimyo?" Mikey asked.
"Tournament of Champions?" Leo inquired.
The Translucent Man seemed to chuckle.
"I apologize." he told them. "I am certain this is all quite confusing to you. Perhaps this will help to clarify."
He reached into his sleeve, pulling out a traditional war paddle. He shook it in his hands, and the water of the lake lifted again. This created a floating pool of water that suspended itself like a screen. The man used it to display crude images as he spoke.
"You see, your dimension is one of countless in an infinite multiverse." He explained. "And at the center of all these worlds, is the Battle Nexus."
"So, the Nexus is a point of overlapping subspace commonality?" Mikey questioned.
The other just turned to him, giving him confused looks. Even Master Splinter seemed surprised.
"What?" Mikey questioned. "Donny's not the only one that likes Star Trek you know."
"That's more like it." Hisako let out in relief.
"So, what is this Battle Nexus, really?" Leo asked. "As well as this 'Tournament of Champions?"
"The Battle Nexus was built by the great Daimyo in order to unite the various universes." the man explained. "Every year, he invites the greatest champions of various worlds to attend. Up until now, no heroes have shown up on this world that were worthy of the tournament. Not until the six of you. You fight with great honor, putting the needs of others before your own, and even when face with your worst enemy, you showed mercy."
"Aw go on." Mikey brushed aside. "... no seriously, go on. We could use the praise."
Raph just elbowed him in response.
"Normally, contestants would have to pass through the preliminary tryouts before attending, but in light of your recent heroics, the Daimyo has seen fit to grand you automatic admission, should you choose to accept it." The translucent man concluded.
"Shell yeah we accept it!" Mikey exclaimed.
"Can we Sensei?" Leo asked, turning to Splinter.
"Please?" Hisako begged.
"It would be a nice change of pace, being able to fight against other honorable warriors." Donny told him.
"Indeed." Splinter pondered. "I cannot remember the last time I was able to participate in such a tournament."
"So… is that a yes?" Raph asked hopefully.
"Yes Raphael." Splinter confirmed. "We will participate in this tournament."
"Excellent." The translucent man told them. "When you are ready, enter the portal."
With that, he shook his war paddle again. The shimmering pool fell back into the lake as the vortex returned. The man then descended into it, disappearing without a trace. The siblings all grinned, then got out of the water and ran towards the docks.
"Care to do the honors, Mikey?" Leo asked.
"You betcha!" The orange turtle announced before the five siblings all held hands. "Cowabunga!"
They all jumped into the swirling portal at the same time, disappearing with barely a splash. Splinter watched them go, shaking his head with a smile. He then jumped into the portal after them.
The swirling portal tossed the siblings around for a few minutes, all of them still clinging to one another tightly. Eventually, it spat them all out in the middle of an ornate gazebo, all of them landing in one big turtle pile. Splinter emerged after them, flipping over their haphazard pile gracefully before landing triumphantly on the ground in front of them. He straightened up, his eyes widening as he took in his surroundings
"My children," he let out. "You must see this."
The Hamato siblings slowly untangled themselves from one another, getting to their feet with many groans and moans. When they finally got to their feet, their collective jaws dropped.
"Guys… I don't think we're in Northampton anymore." Hisako whispered.
The portal had dumped them out at the beginning of a long cobblestone path that cut through a field of lush grass with small, majestic rock outcroppings. Ahead of them was a large cliff that had dual waterfalls falling on either side of it. The waterfalls parted to reveal a large stone statue carved into the rocks. The statue stood over what could only be described as a large island standing in the middle of the waterfall's pool.
The island was dominated by a large city, one that seemed to have been plucked straight out of Feudal Japan. It was surrounded by a large, stone wall with an ornate gate opening at the end of a large bridge that connected the island to the mainland.
"This… is… AWESOME!" Mikey cheered.
He began running towards it, but Leo stopped him.
"Hold on guys." he insisted. "We've got a slight problem."
"Leo, for once there is no problem!" Raph insisted. "We were invited here, this place looks freakin' awesome, what's the hold-up?"
"Two things." Leo said, holding up his solitary two fingers. "First, none of us have our weapons. Second, we're all still in our swimsuits."
Everyone blanched, looking down at themselves. Sure enough, each of the turtles were wearing nothing but appropriately colored swimming trunks while Hisako was left in a green and black short sleeved wetsuit. Splinter, the only one who had elected not to go swimming, was the only one dressed and armed.
"Sewer cakes." Donny swore. "What do we do?"
"We can't go in there looking like this." Mikey insisted. "We'll look like idiots!"
"Maybe we could go back through the portal." Hisako suggested. "Just pop back to Northampton, grab our stuff, and-"
She cut herself off as she saw the portal had disappeared, leaving the Hamato Clan without a way home.
"There are so many words going through my head, and none of them are very nice." Hisako muttered.
"Hey!" Raph began shouting. "Weird water guy! A little help!"
From a small pool in the center of the gazebo, the Translucent Men emerged, facing the Hamato Clan.
"Is there a problem?" he asked.
"Unfortunately, in their eagerness to join your tournament, my children neglected to bring their clothes and weapons." Splinter explained.
The Translucent Man looked at the five Hamato siblings, examining them.
"Oh my, this simply will not do." he announced.
He lifted his war paddle, giving it a shake. The water from the gazebo rose up, swirling around each of the siblings individually. They vanished into cocoons of water, which began to glow briefly. After a minute the water flowed back into the gazebo, revealing the siblings in their new outfits.
They were all wearing black suits with large collars that could double as lower face masks. Metal arm plates protected their upper and forearms, with smaller plates attached to a pair of gloves. The pants bunched up a bit at the knees before tightening around their ankles, so their new sandals would fit. The turtles had large chest plates that covered their entire torso while Hisako's only covered her chest. A quick pat on her stomach revealed a secondary plate under her clothes. The turtles also had shoulder guards and a codpiece, and all five of them had straps and scarves in their respective colors across their chests. As an added bonus, Hisako's hair had been done up in a bun with decorative chopsticks sticking out.
"Whoa." Raph let out. "Not bad."
"I could get used to these." Hisako commented.
"These are traditional battle garments worn by many of the soldiers that reside here." the man explained. "Consider them a gift. As for your weapons, I shall go and fetch them momentarily. Take the opportunity to explore the Nexus. The tournament does not start until tomorrow, and I am certain you are eager to look around."
"You are awesome, translucent dude." Mikey complimented.
The man merely bowed respectfully, disappearing back into the water. Now properly attired, the Hamato family set their sights on the city.
"Shall we?" Master Splinter asked.
The siblings all nodded eagerly, then they made their way down the path and towards the large town.
...
Upon entering the large town, the Hamato family was floored by just how many different species of aliens there were. No two creatures looked the same, with every single creature there was as strange and unique as the last. There were shops across the square set up like a bazaar, creatures calling out with bets on the fights, souvenirs and food.
"Dudes..." Mikey gasped. "Do you realize what this is?"
"I'll bite." Raph declared. "What?"
"The opportunity we missed out on while on D'hoonib!" Mikey cheered.
"Mikey's right," Donny concurred. "Here we can walk around in broad daylight without anyone screaming their heads off at our passing."
"And these cerebralites come in handy too." Hisako added. "Everyone is speaking English."
"What are you talking about?" Splinter questioned. "Every creature here is speaking English."
The turtles exchanged confused looks.
"But that makes no sense." Leo pointed out. "How can random beings from various planets and dimensions all know how to speak English?"
"Perhaps I can explain." The translucent man offered, rising out from a nearby puddle.
Everyone jumped, turning towards him in surprise.
"You again." Mikey let out. "Seriously dude, someone needs to put a bell on you."
"The Battle Nexus had very unique properties." the man explained, seemingly oblivious to Mikey's bell quip. "The air is breathable by all, and the magic of this world makes it so no matter where you are from, you hear your home world's native tongue. After all, this is a place where fellow heroes can meet, and that is much easier without a language barrier."
"That's handy." Donny conceded.
"I'm liking this place more and more." Raph agreed.
The translucent man smiled, then waved his war paddle. It left a trail of water in its wake, from which their weapons emerged from. The siblings all reached in grabbing their weapons and stowing them on their belts and backs.
"The first round does not take place until tomorrow, so feel free to explore the Nexus" the translucent man informed them. "Here is the key to your room in the Home of Champions, as well as a contestant wallet so you can enjoy the bazaar at your leisure."
He waved his war paddle again, six ornate keys and small pouches emerged from the produced water. They all claimed their stuff, then the translucent man folded in on himself, disappearing once again.
"So, what do we do now?" Mikey asked.
"I don't know about you, but I'm going to take a look around this Nexus." Donny reported. "Just think about all of the various flora and fauna I can find that's unique to this place. All of the unexplained phenomena just waiting for me."
"Knock yourself out, Don." Raph told him.
"Just make sure to report to our room by sundown." Splinter insisted.
"Will do Master Splinter." Donny replied before heading off.
"I'm going to see if there's a training ground." Leo decided. "I'm curious to see what we'll be facing in the upcoming fights."
"Suit yourself." Mikey replied. "I'm going to go find something to eat."
Splinter immediately turned to Raph, who held up a hand.
"You don't even have to ask, Sensei." he told him. "I'll follow Mikey to make sure he behaves."
"I'll go with Leo." Hisako declared. "I could use some practice anyhow."
"I shall conduct my own exploration." Splinter decided. "It has been some time since I could walk the streets freely. Only a fool would pass up a chance like this."
"Then it's settled." Leo announced. "We'll meet back at the room at sundown."
Everyone nodded, then scattered about the Nexus.
...
As Donny walked around the Nexus, he was drawn in by all the amazing sights there were to see. He could see butterflies the size of birds flitting about the bazaar, cat-like creatures with multi-colored fur slinking through alleys. He continued looking around, wishing he'd been able to bring his lab coat, since it held his sketchbook.
"Maybe I can grab one from the bazaar." he mused.
He managed to find a small parchment shop, getting himself a small leather-bound book and a quill. After figuring out the strange pen, and realizing he didn't need ink like he believed, the purple turtle began sketching away at everything he saw.
"I wonder if anyone would mind if I took some flora samples with me." He pondered.
As Donny looked up, he saw a small garden set up in a large courtyard near the center of the town. He made a beeline for it, marveling at the array of plants.
"Holy chalupa..." he gasped.
He plucked a few flowers, pressing them into his book for further study. However, as he reached for a darker flower with bright red pollen, a gloved hand grabbed his wrist, preventing him from getting it.
"I'd advise against that." the owner of the hand advised.
Donny looked up to see a warrior clothed in navy blue and yellow armor with a purple cloak and a red oni mask standing over him. The warrior let go of his hand before gesturing to the flowers.
"These are Nexus poppies." he explained. "While they are beautiful, their pollen is especially dangerous. It reacts violently with retinal fluid, and will rend its victims blind within hours."
"Yikes." Donny let out, pulling his hand away. "Talk about a blinding powder. Thanks for the save."
"Think nothing of it." the warrior replied, lifting his mask to reveal a younger face with long red hair that reached his back. "I am Ue-sama, the Son of the Daimyo."
"I'm Donatello." Donny replied. "I'm one of the contestants in the Tournament.
"Yes, my father told me of you." Ue-sama informed him. "He says you and your family are skilled warriors. I look forward to seeing you in the arena."
"Think maybe we'll match up in the tournament?" Donny asked.
Ue-sama shook his head.
"No, not this time." He answered. "My father forbade me from entering the tournament this year. I am merely a spectator."
"Ah." Donny replied. "Shame. You seem like a mighty warrior."
Ue-sama bowed.
"I have earned the title of Ultimate Ninja throughout my years in the arena." he boasted. "But my father has told me that a title does not make a warrior, but how they use their skills."
"My father's told me the same thing." Donny responded. "Well, if you're not busy, would you mind helping me with my studies?"
"I'm afraid I cannot." Ue-sama answered. "I have many duties to attend to for tomorrow's tournament."
"I understand." Donny relented. "Hope to see you around."
"Likewise." Ue-sama replied before heading off.
Leo and Hisako made their way through the town, following signs for a training ground. As they approached, they could hear someone already there, the occasional grunt being carried on the wind.
"Sounds like someone's getting their workout in." Leo remarked.
"Yeah." Hisako agreed. "They sound tough."
As they finally reached the training ground, they found a lone warrior training on a dummy made of bamboo. The warrior was a white rabbit, one that wore traditional Japanese clothing from the edo period, and had its long ears tied up as if in a topknot. He carried two traditional swords, one slightly shorter than the other, and fought with the ferocity of a man who had spent his entire life fighting. Leo let out a whistle of admiration.
"Impressive." he remarked.
The rabbit paused mid-swing, glancing over at Leo. He looked surprised, then sheathed his swords.
"I did not realize I had an audience." he commented, bowing to Leo and Hisako. "My name is Miyamoto Usagi."
"I'm Hamato Leonardo." Leo greeted. "This is my sister, Hamato Hisako."
Usagi perked up at the mention of Leo's name.
"Interesting," He commented. "I knew a warrior named Leonardo once. Though he was very different from you."
"Really?" Leo responded.
"Yes, though I suppose it's just happenstance." He dismissed. "Have you come to train for the tournament?"
"We have, yes." Hisako declared. "Though right now, I think my brother wants to test your skills."
"Very well then." Usagi replied, taking a fighting stance. "Test away."
Leo drew his own swords and started circling around Usagi. Hisako settled onto the wooden fence that surrounded the training ground, leaning forward eagerly as the match began. The two clashed swords, both warriors eying the other as if analyzing their style.
"It's strange." Usagi commented. "You even fight like him."
"I hope that's a compliment." Leo remarked, blocking a sword strike.
"Very much so." Usagi reassured. "Though there is a fire in your eyes that he did not have. The fire of one who is not above taking a life when necessary."
Leo then shoved Usagi off and tried swinging at him. The rabbit Ronin quickly ducked under the blade before bringing up his short sword to block it.
"Taking a life is never easy." Leo replied. "But sometimes, to protect the ones I care about, I've had to cross that line."
"I know, believe me." Usagi replied. "I have been forced to stains my sword many times. The life of a Ronin is a difficult one, but it is the life I have chosen."
"Sounds like you've been through a lot." Leo noted.
"As have you." Usagi added. "But there is a saying: Great men, or animals, are forged in flames."
"I can attest to that." Leo agreed, taking another swing at him.
...
Meanwhile, Raph and Mikey were walking around and enjoying the bazaar. Mikey's arms were laden with several different foreign treats, chowing down on them.
"Raph, you've got to try this thing." Mikey insisted, holding up a weird, purple pastry. "It's like a cupcake and a jelly donut had a baby."
Raph grabbed the pastry and took a bite out of it.
"Not bad." Raph admitted.
"I know, right?" Mikey said happily. "Dude, I wanna live here. Like, forever."
"That would be nice." Raph agreed.
As they walked along, they walked past a humanoid rhino in a white, traditional Japanese gi. Once the rhino laid eyes on them, a smile broke out on his face.
"Well, well, I was wondering when I'd come across you!" he declared.
"Um… ok." Mikey let out. "Who are you?"
"Names Gennosuke." The rhino introduced. "Though my friends call me Gen. and you two must be a pair of those new warriors that were added to the roster."
"Yeah that's us." Raph confirmed. "What about it?"
"My friend and I are contestants in the games ourselves." Gen explained. "And I'm starting a bit of a betting pool on who's to win. Got the odds all written out, and all I need now is info on the new meat."
"You're talking like you're already slated to win." Raph commented with his arms crossed.
"Well the odds of me winning are three to one." Gen conceded. "What do you say?"
"I say you haven't met us yet." Mikey declared. "If you knew half the things we've done, you'd know that if anyone was slated to win, it's one of us."
"Ha! You?" Gen dismissed. "The odds of anyone of you is two hundred to one. You don't have a chance."
"Hey, only one person gets to badmouth my brother, and he's standing right here." Raph declared, jabbing Gen in the chest. "So why don't you take your betting pool and turn your sawed-off horn elsewhere, okay?"
"Suit yourself." Gen replied, walking off. "Your loss."
"Thanks dude." Mikey said. "So, let's see if this place has any pizza. I've got one shell of a craving."
Raph just shook his head, smiling as the two went off.
...
In another part of the Nexus, Splinter was just walking down the streets of the Nexus Plaza. The feeling of the sun on his face, as well as the casual chaos of the streets was music to his ears. It reminded him of his time of just simply being Hamato Yoshi.
"I cannot remember the last time I have felt so at home on the surface." he said to himself.
As he continued walking, he absentmindedly bumped into a large, anthropomorphic tiger. Both stopped, the tiger turning to him with a snarl.
"You should be careful." he growled. "Lots of races will tear you apart for such an offense."
"My apologies." Splinter insisted, giving a small bow. "I was just enjoying the plaza."
The tiger looked at him, then sighed.
"Jeez, I can't be mad at a face like that." he let out. "This the first time ya ever seen daylight?"
"No, but I haven't been able to go out into the light for many years." Splinter admitted. "Beings like me are… uncommon in my world."
"Hate to live there." the tiger commented. "I'm Tigerclaw. You got a name?"
"Splinter." He replied.
"Pleasure to meet you." Tigerclaw told him. "You a contestant, or a spectator?"
"Contestant, as well as my family." Splinter told him.
"Family?" Tigerclaw repeated. "You're married?"
"Was." Splinter corrected. "She died… a long time ago."
"My condolences." he replied.
"She is in a better place." Splinter insisted. "I know she is watching over me and my children."
"How many?" Tigerclaw asked.
"Six." Splinter replied. "Though only five of them were able to attend. My other daughter is taking care of business abroad."
"You must be proud." Tigerclaw commented.
"More than I can ever express in words." Splinter agreed.
Tigerclaw smiled, then seemed to glance at his wrist.
"I wish you luck in the tournament." Tigerclaw told him. "Sorry to cut this conversation short, but I must be going."
"Of course." Splinter allowed. "Perhaps we will face each other in the tournament."
"Perhaps so." Tigerclaw replied before walking off.
Splinter watched him go, then turned and continued his own path. He was unaware of the fact that Tigerclaw turned back as well, scanning Splinter with a cold, calculating glare.
...
After sparring, Usagi and Leo had gone off to one of the Nexus' restaurants. Hisako had elected to remain behind in the training grounds, sharpening her skills and allowing the two swordsmen to talk.
"I must say, the more I talk to you, the more I feel like we have met before." Usagi declared.
"I wish I could say the same." Leo conceded. "You seem like someone I would be lucky to call friend."
Usagi smiled.
"Friends are in short supply for me these days." Usagi admitted, picking up his sake cup and taking a drink. "In my world, death is a constant figure. I have lost many friends along my path."
He rubbed an arch-shaped scar over his eyebrow.
"It is for that reason I became a Ronin."
"Really?" Leo replied. "What happened?"
Usagi set down his cup, letting out a sigh.
"I used to be a samurai, in the service of Lord Mifune." he explained. "I rose in the ranks, and soon became the personal bodyguard of his family, including his wife and young son. Unfortunately, I failed to prevent a ninja from assassinating them both, leaving my lord heartbroken and vengeful."
"That's… That's awful." Leo let out.
"Indeed." Usagi agreed. "We soon found out that a rival lord had ordered the assassinations, a vile man by the name of Lord Hijiki. Lord Mifune waged a war against the lord… and was slain in the final battle. It was the same day I got this."
He tapped his scar.
"I'm sorry." Leo tried to console.
"After burying the head of my lord, I was left masterless, and I became a Ronin." Usagi concluded. "It has been many years since that fateful day. I have seen much in my time and raised my blade many times. It is refreshing to know that this time, it will be in an honorable and bloodless conflict."
"I look forward to it myself." Leo agreed, smiling again. "You got quite the skill set there."
"Honed by years of experience." Usagi replied, his smile returning as well. "Though for your sake, I hope we are not pitted against one another."
"You think you can take me?" Leo remarked.
"It is a possibility." Usagi retorted.
Leo smirked, then got to his feet, tossing a few bills on the table.
"I guess we'll have to wait 'til tomorrow then." he quipped.
"That we will." Usagi replied as the two went off.
...
As the sun set over the horizon, the Hamato Clan reconvened at their designated room. It was a large, Japanese style room with an extremely large bed that had been set up in the center. The smaller futon beside it was clearly for Splinter, and the tasteful decorations and all-around homey feel of the place had all five of the siblings grinning.
"Look at this place." Hisako gasped as she pulled the chopsticks from her hair, allowing it to cascade down her back. "It's like a small slice of Japan meets the lair."
"It is quite reminiscent of the barracks I once called home with the Foot." Splinter recalled. "The attention to detail is remarkable."
"You're telling me." Donny agreed, helping his siblings shed their armor for some provided night clothes. "I've got an entire notebook of plants and observations that are going to be keeping me busy once we get home."
"Personally, I kind of wish we could make this place our home." Mikey admitted, plopping onto the bed.
"What's wrong with New York?" Leo questioned, helping Hisako tie her night kimono. "It's been our home since we hatched and mutated."
"Have you seen this place Leo?" Mikey asked. "The sights, the food, the people."
"Not to mention we can walk around in broad daylight." Raph added. "And no one wants to throw us in a cage or dissect us."
"The Nexus is nice and all, but our home is, and will always be New York." Leo declared, sitting down on the bed. "It's not perfect, but it's where we belong."
"Eh, I guess you're right." Mikey conceded.
"He is correct." Splinter agreed, laying down on the futon. "Now, get some rest, my children. The tournament begins tomorrow."
The five Hamato siblings nodded as they flopped onto the large bed, eager to get some rest.
...
In the dead of night, Ue-Sama stood in a large temple called The Hall of Champions. He stood in front of a statue of himself, which marked him as a previous champion, his foot tapping impatiently as he waited for someone. Eventually, a figure emerged from the shadows, remaining out of sight.
"Took you long enough." Ue-Sama snapped.
"Sorry to keep you waiting, Ultimate Ninja." the figure replied, a voice dripping with malice and cold contempt.
"No matter." Ue-Sama dismissed. "You're here and that's what matters. Are you set for what you have to do tomorrow?"
"Yeah, yeah." the figure replied. "I was just scoping out the competition. We've got a few contenders to deal with, and the new editions are definitely powerful warriors."
"That won't be a problem, will it?" Ue-Sama questioned.
The figure chuckled darkly, emerging from the darkness to reveal none other than Tigerclaw.
"No." he answered. "It won't."

Anonymous ask: do you have any pets? What are their names? Why do you keep them? What got you into keeping them? Do you have any future pet plans? 💖💖
Ok anon do u really wanna get into this convo? Itll take a while.
Okay so im at college so rn the only pets with me are my fishb a male halfmoon plakat named Cosmos Florence the second, a nerite snail named Nertb and a black mystery named Onyx. I keep them because god man i just. I just love em so much ya know? Its like. I have this little ball of hate and rage in my dorm who has such a beautiful personality and then to complement that i have these chill snaild who r just trying really hard. Back home we have even more pets and oh man oh man i love them?? They are what love and joy looks like?? We have my dogs, cat, turtle, lizards, birds, hairless guinea pigs, fish, and chickens.
The chickens are named Short Bread and Oreo bevause of how they looked when they were younger. Oreo is a little spunkyer that Short bread while i think short bread is a little…. Confused? Yeah just generally confused by everything.
We have Mr. T, our full grown, healthy red ear slider who lives in a small pond in the back yard with a few feeder fish he never ate. Those fish have grown to be his pals and he just. Hase never eaten them.
Then we have the birds, Able, who likes to tell at you if u look at her to long. Her hobbys are chewing through toys as she is hanging from them and being suprised when she falls. We then have Birbank, named after the airport my dad found him at, who lives very closely with his bf Ruby. Birbank is a grey and white cockatiel and Ruby is a green Indian Ringneck. They had being more than 2 feet apart for longer than 2 seconds and often u will find Ruby yelling when Birbank flys somewhere he cant go (ruby doesnt know how to fly) and birbank screaming when he realises the mistake he made. Ruby likes to give people kisses and is a lover, not a fighter. Birbank likes to hiss at peanuts and ignore everything besides Ruby. Next we have our Canary, Mango whos fav food is blue berrys and kale. He likes to sing when he hears trumpets and my flute. He has a club foot so when we adopted him the bird rescue we got him from was relived because no one else would take him. He is the most graceful flying bird i have ever seen! Finally we have the zebra finch named Shimmy. When we first adopted him he had a super bad plucking problem and was almost completly bald but hes doing much better now, aggressivly peeping when he hears the canary.
Okay now we have 2 lizards, a leopard gecko named Romeo and a crested gecko named Gargoyle. Romeo is a sweet boi with a chubby tail who loves his crickets fast and his meal worms slow. He has one of those reptile hammocks but he prefers climding his cave more. Gargoyle is a sweet girl who will only eat her food when it starts to harden again for some reason. We dont know why but she does and shes kinda a butt. But ya gotta love her!
Our cat’s name is Figaro and she’s currently bald. She had to get shaved, the vet said shes getting up in her years so when she stopped grooming for a month and got matts in her long fur they said she had basicly cat arthritis. Shes doing good and her hobbies are (well atleast when i was home) meowing in my mouth at 3 am to tell me she ate all her food and wanted more.
Wr have 5 dogs so just get ready for that. All our dogs but 1 is a rescue. Coal is a chow/black lab mix. She was adopted as a pup from a local animal rescue and she kniws the mist tricks. Shes a good girl who likes hugs, treats, and when u massage her face. Her favorite toy is a yellow stick that she will bring to you when asked. Shes the second youngest! Lily is the youngest, i sometiems call her satan but only because she is a trickster! You will turn around and shell be on the table eating food, stealing anything from coal, and trying to think up world domination. She and Coal are super close, when we got her Coal went all MaMa dog and now they are inseparable. What makes it better is that Lily is a half Chihuahua/Pomeranian mix so shes tiny next to Coal. Our third youngest is Scarlet, wr think shes the product of a long hair Chihuahua and a deer head Chihuahua. Shes a primadonna who enjoys her alone time and pets. She also like to be held, mainly like a baby so u can hold her and tub her tum. She also REALLY LIKES CAR RIDES like man even going to the vet shes jazzed. Second oldest is Vinnie, a pug my bro ham adopted. Hes super sweet and good he likes face squishes and whrn he naps his tail uncurles. He stands very proper like hes a gentleman and likes to sit on ur feat. He has a grain allergy so he eats special grain free food. Next we have the oldest of our dogs MY SWEET BABY GIRL GIGI. shes my sun and moon. We got gigi when i was 8 and when i was 10 my sister went to college, leaving her for me to takr care of. And well, shes literally the most important thing in the world to me. My sister got her from a breader (which i dont like cus dogs in shelters need homes) but shes a Brussels Griffon so the breader croped her ears and tail. I DO NOT CONDONE THE PRACTICE OF CROPPING AND PART OF A DOG UNLESS SUGGESTED BY A VET, SOME DOGS GET THEIR TAILS CROPPED BECAUS ETHEY BREAK BONES IN THEM AND THAT IS THE ONLY CROPPING I CONDONE. Her ears were cropped lopsidedb and improperly which brought many problems to her later on. She developed many ear infections that have caused her to scratch her ears until they bleed, has had medication for 3 different ear infections, and has almost no ear canal left. Her vet has told us she is almost deef. Also as she got older she got chronic dry eye and takes medicated eye drops for it but shes fine as long as she has those. She needs loud or sharp sounds to get her attention so i trained her to respond to clapping, whistling (which i do very loudly) and snapping fingers. She is a sweet heartb adn a super velcro dog! I cried for three days after i had to go to college and they drive her up to visit me. When im home she goes looking for me if im out of site for 2 minutes, will wait at the bathroom door for me, stare up the stairs when i go to shower, and press her face against closed doors she knows i went through. Whne she does the last thing i have to drum my fingers on the door so she knows to move back before i open it. I miss her horribly and i skype her almost every day, she gets super excited! The first few days i was gone she actually wouldnt stop barking at night. Shes also a cuddle baby and she doesnt sleep unless she is touching me ao it was probably rough for her. I miss her but ill be able to see her in october when i go to my sisters wedding.
The fish! Okay so my mother has a 75 gallon gold fish aquarium and a 30 gallon in the garage with nithing in it yet (shes thinking tetras). The gold fish tank has 2 butter fly tails and some bristle nose plecos. It also has many a snail rn! A friend of ours dismantled a large aquarium of his own ( he is going through a very hard time financially and im hoping everything works out for him) and gave us the plecos and snails. The snails are 3 rabbit snailsb one nerite (he gave us 2 but the other is with my betta) a few black mysteries, and a golden apple who i named Big Mama.
Lemme tell u about big mama real fast. I call her this because, first of all shes a full grown golden appleb second of all because shes a mama. He had a live planted tank thich included a moss ball he has been taking care of for 5 year, its the size of my head and when we put it in the 75 gallon it because the main pice of the tank. What we found out later was that Big Mama had made her family in ut and we have abou 20 BABY GOLDEN APPLES IN THERE ALONE!! He also gave us an anibius fern which i put in my betta’s tank and after getting to college and living hear for a few weeks i found out there were eggs on it because I KNOW HAVE MANY A BABY GOLDEN APPLE. these ones tho r much smaller than the moss ball ones, mine being hatchlings and those being the size of a finger nail. But anyway they have grown large enough where i can tell they r not pest snails and i will be rehoming them to other fish keepers in my dorms once they get a little bigger.
My mom has 3 hairless guinea pigs. Did you know that at petco people tend to walk in and drop off pets they “just dont want any more”? Well it hapoens a lot and my mom fell in love with them instantly. We have Billy, the oldest, Piggy, the middle in age, and sweet baby Bear who is small and young. They are all good boys and are doing very well so far in their new home! My mom had already owned billy and was looking into getting him friends, (guinea pigs live friends! They actually should be kept in atleast pairs but we were not aware at first, now we know better) all three of them are being slowly introduced! Bear and Piggy already live together but we dont want to rush this process and put billy right into the mix, that would probably be the worst think. They are slowly beibg acclimated to eachother.
I guess you could say i love pets because they are sweet and wonderful. I keep most of them because i know i can care for them, that i have the space, and the resources. I have the time and the will to foster a loving home for all my pets, and so does my family. Animals are a big part of my life and i love all of them with all my heart.
My future plans? Well nothing soon! Im in a dorm so Cosmos and his snail friends are all ivr got planed rn. But i hope to, onece in the distante future, get a tank with a school of danionella dracula in it, they are tiny fishb only getting half an inch in side. But id need a good tank for them since they school about 12 and id like to do the whome thing live plants (i also want one of those rimless aquatiums hnnnnnnnngh) i hope to upgrade cosmos to a larger aquarium b currently hes in a 2.5 which is enough for a betta, sure, but id rather he be in a 5 gallon. But really? I just wanna go home n be with GiGi more than anything.
Thank you for the ask!

Week in Review - 59
Welcome back! After a long and unexpected sabbatical we are bringing you new installments of the continuing adventures of our favorite ladies. (and yes, Splinter too, cause we all love him, he lives forever in our hearts.)
Aww, Rats! 26-30
The Rat King roared, but then fell backward his back hitting the table.  “No!” he cried.  “You are mine!”
“Not so fast, Rat King,” Mikey popped out of nowhere, carrying a cooler.   He opened it, and out came a pink, brown and cream thing, flopping on the Rat King’s face with a wet splat.  “Ice Cream Kitty, away!”
He screamed, his burned, shrivelled arms flailing in the air as the sound of a cat filled his ears.  In desperation, he managed to grab the thing, and fling it off of him.
“Was that April’s cat?” Donnie asked, as Splinter sprinted forward.
“Absolutely not,” Mikey crossed his arms indignantly.
The Rat King ran to a garbage shaft, gripping the handle of the rusted machine, he cried.  “Take her,” he pointed to The Phoenix, still struggling on the floor.    “Destroy them all!”  He pulled the lever, and the floor dropped out from under him.
Phoenix screamed when a giant rat bit through her chains, freeing her wrists.  She brought her hands up to the beasts bony face, but it did no damage, as it grabbed her in its mouth and bounded after it’s master.
Splinter, not far behind, plunged down the shaft, until all of them were lost from view.
Eliza could hear the sounds of struggle occurring below and for once in her life she was itching to join in the fray. Then all at once huge rats bounded onto the upper level that they had forced her to wait at. Well, she thought as she flexed her claws before standing up, I guess this is my cue.
The rat must have noticed her movement because it turned towards her with a hiss and immediately she responded in kind, hunching lower to brace herself for it’s attack. But before she could engage a turtle shell blocked her view and she could hear the shink of Leonardo’s blades.
“Stay back.” He threw at her as he engaged HER opponent in battle. “You need to take cover Mrs. V.”
If she had the inclination she would have rolled her eyes but she was distracted by the screams of the humans down below. They were scattering everywhere and had almost cleared from the chamber. Then she saw it, on the second level, making an exit into the tunnels, one of those monstrosities was dragging Gwyn, her Gwyn, behind it.
A blood lust like she had never felt before bubbled up inside of her and she saw red. Dropping to all fours she ran across the broken concrete till she found an opening that would get her down to the level she needed. Ignoring the cries behind her to wait, she launched herself off the edge and into battle.
Falling down the shaft, following The Rat King, Phoenix had trouble getting her breath with the force of the fall.  She was wedged in the large rat’s mouth like a dog with a bone, her legs sticking out of one end and her head and shoulders out of the other.  The quickly approaching floor, just past the Rat King himself, made her stomach flop.  A small burning on her neck made her look up, to see sparks falling about her as Splinter followed them, all fours against the metal shaft, his claws causing a shower of sparks in his attempt to slow his fall.
Her body jerked hard as the rat hit the floor, immediately breaking out in a run.  She reached with her hands still bound to each other for the creature’s nose, to try and steady herself, as the hopping run of the rat made her body lurch this way and that like a rag doll.
She managed to use an upjerk to complete a sit up and grab onto a bony protrusion on the rat’s muzzle.  With the insane shaking finally subsiding some, she was able to concentrate a little more on her surroundings.  Splinter was following them, on all fours and to her surprise, he was catching up!  He and the Rat King were having some sort of discourse about control.  “I would like some more control over my life, please!” she shrieked.
As if her request was a magic spell, a sea of rats crashed down in a turn in the sewer tunnel, filling her with horror.  “Not good!” she cried, but like her previous request, it seemed to go unnoticed.
What was not unnoticed, by her at least, was that the sewer suddenly turned into the old sewers of the original city, ancient and pretty, with brick work decorating tunnel heads and junctures.  What kind of civil engineer decorates a sewer? she wondered errantly, before the rat leapt into the air, dropping her on an outcropping, leaving her alone on a little island of what was once an aqueduct of some kind.
A few islands away, The Rat King laughed, looking down the side at Splinter, hanging on by only his claws, the ground many stories below hidden in fog.
Eliza’s trajectory landed her on the back of the massive rat and she instinctively dug her claws in. The effect was immediate though the outcome was mixed. The beast roared its displeasure, releasing it’s hold on Gwynevere in the process. It then immediately started bucking and Eliza bared down, attempting not to be thrown like a rookie at the rodeo, even though that was a fair estimation of her actual fight prowess. She lasted her eight seconds but not much farther beyond that before she was thrown into a nearby wall.
“Mom!” Gwyn was at her side and the ferret embraced her with a fierceness born of fear, ignoring the ache that was now present in her right hip.
“Are you ok?” She exclaimed as she patted the girl down in a frantic effort to see if anything was broken.. “How’s your le..” The mother daughter moment was short-lived as the massive rat was in front of them again, pinning them between itself and the wall at their backs. “Stay behind me.” She said as she stood and shielded Gwyn with her body.
Time seemed to slow as Eliza crouched down. Air left her lungs slowly, becoming a growl as it passed through her throat, her snout curled and quivering as the sound reverberated off the roof of her mouth before the breath finally left her to steam in the cooler air of the crumbling underground. With her next inhale she could smell the rat, the dampness that clung to its underbelly from traveling in the sewers, the rankness of it’s breath from feasting on garbage and the irony sweetness of the blood from the puncture wounds she had given it. Eliza shifted her body forward, sniffing the air with greater boldness and the rat slinked back half a step. She could smell something new now. Fear.
The small retreat sent a trill of anticipation up Eliza’s spine that was foreign to her mind but seemed very right in her body. Was she actually looking forward to mixing it up with this giant rat? Apparently, yes. But she couldn't forget the reason why she was about to fight.
“Gwyn,” she said without looking away from the creature's beady red eyes. “get away as soon as you see a chance. The turtles are here along with April. Find help and stay safe.”
“But mom…” She felt her daughter press against her back, seeking comfort. Eliza could smell her hesitation, and so could the mutated rat. The ferret’s advantage was disappearing as the rat stepped forward again with renewed confidence.
Eliza pressed the girl away with one hand, launching herself at her enemy in the next instant. She was only able to push the giant back a few feet, with her best effort at a football tackle, before it's snapping jaws caught her arm and threw her to the ground. Her own mass kept her from being flung about like a rag doll but she was seriously concerned about her shoulder staying in it's socket with the monster tossing its head with that much force. She was thankful when it let her go but horrified when it turned it’s head to track Gwynevere as the girl tried to make her escape.
Now trapped underneath the beast, held down by a massive paw on her chest, the ferret had few options to counter as the rat stretched out it’s neck, snapping towards Gwyn in an effort to keep the girl near the wall. And if the terrified high-pitched scream was any indication, it was working.
Rational thought left Eliza, but the void was quickly filled with rage and instinct. Stuck underneath the mutant she had little maneuverability but an excellent view of the rat’s neck, the arteries prominent and pulsing just beneath the black fur, as it’s massive jaws snapped at her offspring. It had not taken into account Eliza’s own long, flexible neck, forgotten about her pointed canines and, most damning,  underestimated the danger of a mother’s wrath.
